Weekly thoughts ep 217-

I forgot to do these last week! But you know I HAD to talk about this week's episode. I know a ton of y'all are behind and this is a spoiler but if this doesn't motivate you to hurry up and catch up, idk what will.

Jericlaude canon! Kinda lol. For like 30 seconds. Relieved most of the creeps seem to be gone by now so nobody was too viscerally angry about two guys kissing on a webtoon like they were about LGBT stuff in earlier episodes. That's the kind of audience I don't mind losing lol.

Anyway, yeah, I've been waiting to draw this one for a while, tho probably not as long as one might think. I definitely only decided to give them a big kiss scene recently, as tbh Jericho returning Claude's feelings is a newer development as well. I think I've talked about it a little, but Jericho was never originally supposed to return Claude's feelings. But as his character developed, I thought it made great conflict for him and his scion- something that I see a lot of people noticed.

I did hate breaking the 180 rule so blatantly this episode, but it was so important that these panels focus on Jericho's human side. And I think breaking it so blatantly made that clear to a lot of people, because a lot seemed to pick up on it. One of those things where sometimes the curtains really are just blue, but in this case, it was a very intentional choice. Things as well like his blank hand not embracing Claude, and it only touching him when starting to fall back into the scion's mindset and turning into a claw.

I also absolutely didn't originally plan on having Bell in this scene, but plot kinda made it unavoidable so I'm glad everyone liked that one little awkward panel of her lol.

There was a lot of thought put into this episode, and it's definitely one of my favorites, so I'm glad people enjoyed it. I've said this before, but watching Claude go from hands down the most hated character, to one of the most popular has been one of the highlights of writing this story for me. His character development has been some of my favorite to write and I feel like it all culminated in this episode.

Next week is a bit of a mid-season finale! I wasn't originally planning on pausing there, but after that, we're entering kind of the end game arc of CoB! So I really wanted to take some time to hammer out the rest of the story and give it a proper ending.

1. My biggest isssue (as a POC) is when is a character POC or otherized? Do we use IRL or in world? Beau is Human, brown woman. At no point in C2 is the fact that she is brown comes up other than discriptions. Her humaness is what matters especially in the COB. She is treated the same aa Caleb. Fjord, Nott and Molly havs far more in text displays of racism towards them. Ppl dismiss jester as being "white" but insist dorian is poc. When in world they are the same colour.

2. And teiflings would be more discriminated against. I know robbie is poc and dorian is blue but hes a genasi. In the world of exandria i view him and ashton as the same race. So i see these weird arguments online and its always a cross steam trying to use both in world races and irl to prove a point. Since i am examining the world of exandria i use the races displayed there and no attention to what the people look like irl. Also it avoids unintentional sterotyping down the road

3. An example ppl drawing drow and ashton with black racial features (my own) and then someone else complaing that the fandom made the asshole and the would be villian into black men. This fanon has unintended consequences once the story is fully fleshed out. Saying Orym is non white (despite Liams art direction) is bad because people to this day are mad Marisha made beau dark. It cant be both way. This way ppl can headcanon stuff so they dont have 2 go looking for other ips for representation.

So this is a really good point and I am, as said, an ethnic/religious minority but not a racial one and so this is how I tend to interpret this stuff in fantasy works, especially ones that have multiple species (humans, elves, etc) as it's not limited to Critical Role (ie, happens in Dragon Age too), which I think is what you're saying here but feel free to let me know if I'm wrong:

There's "is this character treated, in-world, as racialized" (which is often more contextual in a lot of fictional works in a way it is not IRL due to patterns of colonialism in our world, which is a long conversation I'm probably not equipped to articulate well, but just as an example, Fjord is racialized as a half-orc on the Menagerie Coast, but half-orcs in Yios, for example would have a very different experience). In other words, do people within the work of fiction discriminate against them on the basis of race? Anyway, as you said, Fjord, Molly, Jester, and Veth in her goblin form are treated as The Other; Fjord (and Molly, though his memory is only a few years long) grew up with this experience whereas Jester and Veth grew up, for different reasons, sheltered from or unaffected by that discrimination. Beau didn't experience racism in-world, nor did Veth in her halfling form, despite both of them being visibly nonwhite. For a Dragon Age example, Bellara, Davrin, and Antoine grew up with racism as elves, but Neve did not (and indeed comments on using her privilege as a human mage among human mages) despite being visibly nonwhite (and despite Antoine being white).

There's then "is this character treated out of world as racialized", or in other words, do fans treat them as nonwhite. This is also complicated, and this is something I can speak to as Jewish people who are not also POC experience 'conditional whiteness', ie, when right-wing people want to hate Jews we are the nonwhite infiltrator and when left-wing (and often themselves white) people want to hate them they are the white oppressor. So racist fans will hate characters who are nonwhite (like Beau) and fans trying to prove their blorbo cannot be criticized on the basis of oppression. In this case, Beau and Veth are nonwhite; Fjord and Jester often vary depending on what argument the person wants to make; Molly, as opposed to Jester, is almost NEVER drawn with nonwhite features (which frankly says a LOT of unflattering things about the white queer centering, now that I think about it); etc.

And then there's "is the actor/creator racialized in real life," ie, Robbie, Aabria, Anjali, Utkarsh, Aimee, Christian, Mica, Khary, etc are all POC and the main cast are not. Most of their characters are nonwhite, but few are racialized - Shakaste, Deanna, Bor'Dor, Opal, Deni$e, and Reani do not experience racism within this setting. Genasi (as played by Anjali, Robbie, and Taliesin) are a complicated case of being tokenized/model minority within the Empire, and the Silken Squall being inspired by native culture but their role within the world only slightly touched upon such that it's hard to draw a definitive conclusion.

And, since I referenced it in the tags elsewhere, for an NPC case: Essek is racialized by the people of the Empire (as a drow) along with the rest of the Dynasty; he is not racialized within the Dynasty and is indeed in a privileged position there; and whether or not he's treated as nonwhite by the fandom depends on whether someone wants to hate on him or defend him on the basis of identity. He is an NPC, and Matt's white, but in theory could be controlled by a nonwhite GM such as Aabria, or a nonwhite player in the way that Robbie played Cerkonos.

Anyway: completely agree that a lot of people do this in the end so that they don't have to seek out like, Desiquest or Rivals of Waterdeep or Into the Motherlands or other APs run by actual real nonwhite people either because of parasocial connections to the cast, the fact that CR has a larger fandom and they want the attention, or the fact that often they are here for white queer characters and bring in nonwhite characters (and headcanons of white characters) as some kind of armor against criticism.

I think in terms of character interpretation you do need to consider both in-world (Fjord is textually treated as the racial other to the point of self-harming to fit in; you cannot treat him as The Racial Majority in the world without being noncanonical) and out-of-world (irl people are racist towards Beau) but yeah a lot of people really want to have it both ways.

This happens a lot with queerness too - one of the big backlashes I experienced during this campaign is when I pointed out that Exandria is not, in fact, a setting with systemic homophobia and Imogen's experience of being othered in Gelvaan is an extremely bad metaphor for queerness given that she can read people's minds and almost killed two people, but it is true that people irl may be homophobic towards Imogen as a character. But again, you need to be consistent in those arguments - if you are talking about in-world racism or homophobia, you cannot bring up Imogen or Beau, who do not experience these things. If you are talking about fandom racism, you can bring up Beau. And if your issue is racism and representation in the real world, you can and should push back on (for example) people being racist towards Utkarsh for daring to exist and not know every rule of D&D when Emily Axford is onscreen but also we are watching a show of 8 white people when there are other actual plays with a more diverse cast. And yeah, fanon isn't canon and if the character is only nonwhite in your mind, it is not racist of people to disagree or to not vibe with them and it's also worth checking, if you are headcanoning someone with an identity you do not personally have, to see if you're falling into harmful stereotypes. Why are you headcanoning Orym, a character who doesn't experience in-world discrimination, played by a white man, as nonwhite, instead of seeking out works with textually nonwhite or racialized characters? And why are you incapable of accepting that sometimes you'll like a character who is not on every single axis of oppression and it's like, fine, provided you work against oppression in your real world life? If your faves are always white or always men (or, frankly, always demographically like you) then maybe take a look at yourself and who you are capable of relating to, but if you have a mixture of diverse favorite characters it's fine if not every one of them checks every single box.

Temperance - middle path, patience, finding meaning Originally i was gonna try add more to the background of this card, but then i remembered that i hate drawing backgrounds, so they are just standing in a puddle of water in a grey void. All of the reference cards i found had this same image of two cups and water falling between them, sometimes in an unnatural way, so i put that same thing into this card. I also really like how the water looks its very cool

OKAY so I just spent an hour collecting screenshots, time for the analysis!

(AS ALWAYS, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR INANIMATE INSANITY EPISODE 18 UNDER CUT!!!)

So I'll be tackling this like the episode 17 analysis, breaking it up into parts (except probably many, MANY more parts), but I'll start with Inanimate Island! (This won't be chronological, mostly just a by-area thing!)

And by god, do we start off strong. AN ANTHONY KOS SONG RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE?? HOLY SHIT.

Mephone thinking back on everything, his regrets about how he treated the contestants, his fears.. just. Wow. STRONG opening. (Also his little infodump to Mepad whilst they're still asleep/booting up, me too bud. Me too.)

Gotta admit I got choked up as soon as we started, both from built-up emotions whilst waiting, and just.. how powerful this was?? He cares SO damn much about the contestants, and Cobs destroyed EVERYTHING. This was his life, his escape (and we'll get to that later). Jesus, dude.

FUCK THIS GUY.

Holy SHIT did Joshua Waters do a phenominal job voicing him. I don't know if I've said it before but the II crew did SO good when they recast Cobs. Genuinely I don't think I could've asked for anyone better - you KNOW a VA is great when they can make you feel PHYSICAL RAGE just by saying their lines, y'know? When I first saw the trailer I had to actually take a break because I felt sick to my stomach just HEARING how this fuckass corn cob speaks to Mephone. His frequent infantalisation (both of Mephone, the contestants, the creatorbots, AND the viewers), and his manipulation, just.. eugh. He's probably the most well-written villain I've seen in a WHILE. AND HE'S SO PATHETIC?? He's a disgusting manchild who abuses his creations because it's the only semblance of power he'll get, and IT'S GREAT. I HATE HIM (/POS).

And ngl the self aware "it's good, just don't watch S1" gag made me choke on my lucozade, so thanks AE.

AND HOLY SHIT?? MEPHONE ACTUALLY FINDS HIS VOICE AND REBELS?? I'M SO PROUD OF HIM 😭💙

Again, more of Cobs being an asshole, but bless the Shimmers - they were so damn naïve, I'm glad they were warned and managed to get away, they just wanted their child back, man :(

Yeah I'm not okay.

Not gonna lie, I had a feeling it might've gone this way but I was PRAYING it didn't. Fuck, man.. Mepad is one of my absolute favourites for a multitude of reasons - he loves the contestants with all his heart, he'd do ANYTHING to protect them, and even though we could see how angry he was at Mephone in episode 17, he still gave his life to save him (and by extension, everyone else). He's a goddamn hero, but I wish he didn't have to die (and yes, I will be drawing fanart to cope). Glad he had a moment to be a badass though, Mepad is the living equivalent of "when the calm one gets mad, you know shit's about to hit the fan" and I love him for that 💙

I honestly think this death was so damn fitting for Cobs. It simultaneously feels dramatic, yet so utterly pathetic. It doesn't take itself too seriously, yet it's so built up and suspenseful - this is the moment we've ALL been waiting for. Seeing this bastard get his comeuppance. And to see his demise be a consequence of his vanity? He believed himself to be above everyone - he placed himself on a golden pedestal, thinking himself to be untouchable; he never would've believed he'd fall for such a simple illusion from "feeble minds", yet he did. He's a washed up old hack, through and through. All that grandeur? Just a façade. And honestly? The popcorn scene was so damn funny. Suitcase just casually offering Mephone a part of his father's cooked corpse had me cackling like a madman, it makes Cobs seem even more pathetic than he already was; reduced to a soft, delicate, utterly flavourless food that (if we're thinking about real-life movie theatres and how much popcorn people leave on the floor) is commonly stepped all over by everyone around. He remains in death how he always was in life.

OK SO!! it doesn’t just involve phonepad … it’s an au with MULTIPLE ships 😈😈 which include phonepad (obvs), wiretap (4s x toilet), mecin3gs (mecintosh x 3gs), and ballcobs 😋

wait ok more context this takes place in the 90s and during everyone involved (except cobs, ballpoint, 3gs, and mecintosh)’s highschool years . also takes place in new york, but like . suburban ny. not nyc .

lemme explain the families rq first.

3gs, 4, and 4s are all brothers, living with cobs as a single father 😋! 3gs and 4 have a 7 year age gap, and 4 and 4s have a 2 year age gap

there’s no set ages but i do usually set this around 4’s junior or senior year of hs, which would make him around 16/17, making 3gs around 23/24, and 4s around 14/15 . 3gs is in college !

mepad is an only child!! he’s also adopted 😋!! his bio parents gave him up around age 3, but it doesn’t bother him much . he’s the same age as mephone and is in the same grade

toilet is a family friend of the cobs family!! 4 is forced to hang out w him even though he finds him very annoying . he is a grade below 4, and is in the same grade as 4s . he’s also around 14/15 in most cases

mecintosh is just some guy he has no connection to the cobs family other than 3gs . he’s in college too btw. goes to the same college as 3gs

i say “in most cases” regarding age since sometimes i like to write and draw stuff that takes place earlier in time - like 4’s freshman or sophomore year of hs . but most of the time its junior/senior

mepad and mephone met in sophomore year. mepad moved to mephone’s school in freshman year, and they met via mepad being a tutor for mephone !! mephone is not a very good student. usually c’d and d’s with the occasional b or a in his electives, sleeps in class and skips on occasion, is nice enough to his teachers but is not a suck up by any means. mepad is a straight A student , goody two shoes , teachers pet , but well liked as a person in school. not as in he’s popular, he’s just like the “nice kid” that no one really has anything against. mephone is not well liked in school, he’s not completely hated but he’s not cool. gets bullied a fair bit, but he has his little group of friends.

speaking of them, he’s in a band w them!

his band is actually an early version of spoiled lemon , with starfruit on vocals, mephone on lead guitar and backup vocals (lead vocals on occasion), guava on drums, lemon on bass, and pineapple on rhythm guitar !!

i don’t have a name for them yet but they wouldn’t be called spoiled lemon . but yeah it’s essentially an early version of spoiled lemon

BACK TO MEPHONE AND MEPADDD😋😋

mephone pretty much fell for mepad immediately. he’d seen him around school before he started doing tutoring with him and thought he was attractive, but was obviously too much of a pussy to go up to him. also he has no rizz so it wouldn’t have worked out anyways.

once he started doing tutoring w him, it went from like a minor hallway crush to a whole THING. lil bro ain’t getting NO studying done!!

mepad likes mephone too, but he doesn’t fall as fast as mephone, he def ends up being very much crushing on him, but only after a bit of tutoring him and learning more about him and stuff . after that he’s just as deep in this as mephone is 💔

cobs doesn’t really let mephone have people over, and mephone wants to be away from home as much as possible, so he starts taking more time to get “tutoring” outside of school, aka, going to mepad’s house after school . at first it actually is just more tutoring outside of school but it quickly becomes just mephone and mepad hanging out at mepad’s place … and ofc eventually ends up as their after school homo gay time ❤️❤️

also. mephone is absolutely a bad influence on mepad LOLZZZ he starts convincing him to sneak out and stuffs after they get closer.

oh yeah. mephone is a total rule breaker.

he started driving both before cobs let him and before he was legally able to … he sneaks out all the time … lies about where he’s going to cobs … just … yeah .

mepad is also a good influence on mephone though, he does actually help him get his grades up a bit ❤️❤️❤️

Since I got this strange app, I might as well use it to find objects with the same intrests as me.

Who I am!

I am Mephone4, or you could call me Blue, MP4, or just 4 for short! (Geez, did I say 4 enough.?) I have plenty of 'siblings' but I don't consider them family.. EXCEPT MY TRUSY DANDY (a bit violent) BROTHER MEPHONE4S he's pretty cool!! I am made by Mr. C I can't say his full name or he'll get mad.. or whatever, his problem! then you have his right hand (man..? Woman? Object?), Mepad. Huh in hindsight that dialog was probably from the original plot of this au, to think about it.

The plot according to my notes would’ve been that Mephone4 was extremely stressed because Steve Cobs was influencing the mortals and basically everything was going to the dumps. The contestants were being very overworked cause of it. Working to prevent a whole revolution because of it.

Taco would’ve been playing up the humor act very hard, because she was stressed and they were stressed. She would’ve still followed Mephone4 in his confrontation of Steve Cobs, but this time, instead of Cobs dropping the bombshell.. He would’ve thrown Mephone4 out the room and struck a deal with Taco.

One that everything would be better if she listen to him. Regrettably, she would’ve accepted it. And everything would’ve gone to the fishes. Everything looks like it’s going to be okay, all Taco had to do was do a few things like spying.. Things became better, until it didn’t. Taco confronts Cobs, he goes on this rant of how it will be better. She just still has to listen.

He tells her he’s her friend, and more things like that. Taco says “I was never your friend!” Taco attacks the Cobs hologram/puppet(?). And it turns out that everyone can hear Taco but not Cobs. And guess who they think it’s directed to? Themselves. And guess what Cobs did.

If you guessed put his holograms over her friends so it made it seem she was attacking her friends and telling them she was never a friend.. You’re correct!

Yeah she’s cast down the exact same way.

But this time she’s forced to work for Cobs because of her contract.

I didn’t write anything detailed about the middle, but just know it would’ve followed Mepad trying to get Taco to believe she can break out of the contract and that she can become more than a traitor. It also would’ve had moments of Mepad taking care of her clipped wings, cause yes. Oh yeah apparently they also would’ve shared a room, that was full of drawings. It would’ve looked semi-normal and a bit childish. Mostly cause when Taco was banished she technically had the mental capacity of a child, and it’s outdated because Taco hasn’t been there in a while.

I believe Taco and Pickle’s relationship would’ve been based of these lyrics I found in the notes ngl. They seemed to fit the most. Actually maybe this was for the beginning, when they first split up… Here’s the lyrics btw.

Anyhow!

It would’ve ended by Taco getting locked in a room by Cobs to watch him monologue to the other contestants. (Because she would’ve helped them, because while she hates herself and Cobs more than she hates the way they dealed with her.) By then she would’ve known the truth, and didn’t want them to know. Would’ve broken the glass and tackled Cobs. But not before he exposed the truth.

Taco would’ve broken the contract by saying that Cobs didn’t hold his part of the deal.. while fighting Cobs. Basically some of the contestants who weren’t as stunned, join in the fight too. Cobs, battered but not defeated yet.. does a last ditch attempt to kill at least someone with him.

He’s not going to let the contestants take the satisfaction of killing him. He’d much rather live, but he knows if he makes the death as swift and painless as possible, they won’t get the satisfaction of getting a painful death.

He takes the two closest to him which were two of the few objects injured. (Earlier he stabbed Mepad, and Taco got injured trying to help Mepad. Cobs injured more but.. yeah.) Yeah he kills all three of them in an explosion. All of them are shocked, Mepad and Taco didn’t even get to process dying. Especially since there wasn’t any deaths before this.

You heard me right, it would’ve been guaranteed that Taco would die if I went with this plot..

But anyways, I think there were plans of making a sequel of the gods actually dealing with the death of people they knew based on the notes. Like they knew Mepad and Taco before the whole betrayal. They were.. people they knew, not just faceless mortals that died without even knowing them. It’s not very well developed based on what I’m reading. Anyways what’s your thoughts mates? It’s fun to see what could’ve been. Might actually write a separate work about it..

Cobs making Taco say all that stuff to her friends is such a Cobs thing to do, fuck that guy for real. I like the part where he dies, though Taco and Mepad also dying is less pleasing to me. Ah, who am kidding, I love to make my favourite characters suffer, bring on the excruciating deaths. Her and Mepad getting to die together is a nice touch though. Ascending souls together and what not.

It's interesting that the gods can die, since usually gods are considered to be immortal.

I love CoB, it was one of the first webtoons I read. And as someone who owns a dopey, loving rottie, it means so much to finally see a precious little baby getting the proper love and attention 🥹 and as an ace, 10/10, chefs kiss, I love Rex. He's so good.

I love the whole cast, honestly. Even the bad guys have solid motivation. Even side characters have personality.

I really like Lyss. You gave her hard decisions to make, she picked the best options available, and I'm sad to see how much hate she gets. She's just trying to make it through, and she's got morals she stands by.

Also, loving this new stuff on Claude. Maybe it's a bad sign, but I really relate to the poor guy.
