nichelle + axel: is it because i ship them? yes. but more than that, i just think this pair would work so well in an alliance. they could make it so much farther if they just learned from one another. (nichelle teaches axel to cool it down a bit, acel teaches nichelle to be more confident in herself and her abilities) idc what you say, girlboss + girlfailure = success! now PLEASE let them make it to the merge this time

mk + julia AND mk + bowie: do you know how much of a serve it would be for mk to play both julia and bowies by pretending to be in an exclusive alliance with both of them? knock two of the strongest players out by playing both of them at the same time! i trust in mk's ability to outsmart smart competition. buttttt it we get one or the other of these, i also wouldn't mind.

wayne + julia: this would work best if the hockey bros are on separate teams. starts as a manipulative tactic on julia's part (as she should, truly); turns into a possible friendship? maybe even give us some more drama and have wayne find out about julia's plans AFTER they become somewhat-friends? i just wanna see wayne get mad idk; he's fun when he's a little bit snarky 🤭

caleb + julia: players who were robbed by bowie knocking bowie down from the jump would make me so mad because i adore bowie... but it would be such a good play that i'd let it slide 😭 this could potentially give caleb the characterization he lacked.

millie + ripper: i cannot stand ripper (i think if you know me, you know this by now lol) but i do think millie is quite possibly the only one who can make him somewhat tolerable. smartass + dumbass = possible win...?

millie + damien: they are so smart. they gotta win at least ONE challenge together. as long as ripper isn't there interrupting damien's sentences/explanations.........

damien + priya + scary girl: they're all "besties" now. and "besties" help each other when the competition gets tough. scary girl is going to do everything in her power to make sure priya and damien are niceeeeee and safe from everyone else except herself ofc because those are HER victims, nobody else's

raj + zee: i cannot explain why i want to see this... like i don't know what benefit they would have making an alliance. i don't even think zee is that big of a fan of alliances. tbh i just think it would be a silly alliance. and we deserve silly alliances. as a treat.

zee + scary girl: same as above, but this one is even more silly. it's maximum silly. i don't even think they'd win challenges together. but they'd bring in some humor. we deserve laughter.

My thoughts for the characters after all of the promo drops thus far:

Axel: She's definitely got this whole Action Girl thing going on and that is a yes. Her design is pretty nice too.

Bowie: Yeah I just can't hate his design. Confirmed/Hinted as one of the LGBTQ+ characters. I'm just hoping he isn't too much of a stereotype. Also Bowie and Emma friendship?

Caleb: There are 2 things I noticed about him since promotional material came out. First off: He has a similar archetype like Justin (and Alejandro) which is attracting most people in their cast, however I don't see him being a villain/antagonist like those 2 (Bowie fawning over him led to speculation on them being one of the predicted LGBTQ+ couples). Another thing being that he was only seen in 2/3 of the Italian trailers and was AWOL in both Boomerang trailers, leading to many early boot predictions.

Chase: Just based on looks alone he gives off the "normal, nice guy that'll likely get involved in a romantic plot" vibe and there has been a few predictions that he and Priya might be a couple. Also, not a comparison but I cannot help but notice that their signature colors are similar to Mike and Zoey.

Damien: Out of all the male characters he's got the best design in my opinion. I also took notice he seems to have a mustache (not something usually seen on contestants). Also if I can assume that he spoke in the 30 second trailer (The "WHY?!") ... man sounds just like Ryan and I'm fine with that since Ryan was funny.

Emma: She looks a bit like Bridgette and Carrie fused together but with a more preppy sense of fashion (Which is so funny since I don't think Kristin will voice her). Although I've seen theories that she could be a "Bitch in Sheep's Clothing" type villain could be interesting.

Julia: Initially I didn't really have any strong feelings but I can thank the promos for changing my mind and I'm excited. Also her voice sounds just like how I imagined (She sounds kinda like a valley girl). Could be an influencer.

Millie: I wish I had something to say on her because her design is adorable but it looks like her and Priya could be close.

MK: I like how casual her own design is. Now I've been seeing 2 predictions on her and that's between a main character type or an early boot just judging by the 30 second promo. Also her scream reminded me of Amy/Sammy/Taylor.

Nichelle: She looks like a queen (her hair is top tier), my favorite by far. She's clearly a top prediction for a villain but I've also seen predictions for her to be an early if not a pre-merge boot. Now I'm really excited to see her dynamic with Julia.

Priya: I know many predicted she'd be a shy and reserved nice girl but her interaction with Chase says otherwise (and was funny).

Raj and Wayne: Putting these 2 together since the flyer did as well and they are adorable. They're another prediction for a likely LGBTQ+ ship (Not something I'd rule out).

Ripper: I've seen many predictions on whether his character will be a Noah type (snarky asshole type) or Owen (comic relief type) and I'm definitely seeing it lean towards the latter.

Scary Girl: I love her and her energy (from what's been seen so far)! Her color palette is definitely a top 10. Her voice is cute too and seems to suit her from what was heard from her.

Zee: You know I actually like his design, he gives off a laidback vibe. I remember seeing that there would be an amputee character and I did take notice of his leg in the trailer (He wasn't someone I guessed).

I want to say I like emma and bowie’s friendship, but also...I know it’s not completely genuine so like...

with every scene involving ripper, I’m liking him less and less. ugh he combines like all of owen’s bad characteristics, duncan’s bad characteristics, and a hell lot more fart jokes--it gets way old after a while

on a different note, damien’s amazing, he’s so pure

yeah ofc it’s not okay to you, ripper, that’s why you have an IQ of like...1 (sorry, ripper fans, I just rlly don’t like him now)

mk reminds me of a less nerdier scarlett--more so the morally gray scarlett that revealed herself in the control room thingie. she’s got the brains and she’s willing to do anything to get to the top (even if it means putting everyone else down)

....which also gives me slight noah vibes too, but that could just be my noah brainrot--I can’t seem to get over that lmao

Yeah I was waiting for Axel’s boot. She seems like a mix of Shawn and Eva--sure, she may have been a bit one-dimensional and may or may not have a short fuse, but I def would have preferred her to stay over Ripper. Gods, that guy is annoying!

- since they actually acknowledged priyas win, does that mean we’ve finally left behind the ambiguous winner tradition? If so, thank god but also I still don’t know how to feel abt priya as a winner (basically getting what her parents want w/o acknowledging it’s implications for priya all that much)

- was kinda hoping they would go somewhere other than the island/introduce a new gimmick this season but oh well 😔

1: A movie you enjoyed as a kid that you don't now

-Probs some comedy I'd find awfully sexist/racist/homophobic etc. now. But of course, I can't recall a specific one, probs because the experience is so deeply squicky and traumatic. Oh, wait, I know. I adored The Great Mouse Detective as a kid, but have heard so many "bleh" comments about it later that I don't want to ruin it by rewatching it as an adult. Why take a happy, cherished, pure and joyous memory away, especially as there are so few of those in my life anyway in proportion to the bad memories?

2: A movie you disliked as a kid that you like/love now

-Not a movie, but I was literally too fucking terrified to watch Doctor Who as a kid on cable, because the Tom Baker repeats they were showing terrified me with the title sequence alone. That empty stare and howling, diddly-duming music were enough to give me nightmares. So I only got into Who in my late teens!

3: Your favorite movie as a kid

-Define "kid." I went through several. I loved the Disney Robin Hood, of course, and at puberty, Wayne's World (yes) and The Princess Bride were my own cult movies, before I had anyone to fangirl them with. Ah, the pre-Internet era.

4: An actor/actress it took you time to warm up to

I remember being weirdly terrified and disturbed by Jeremy Brett as a kid, but then I felt the same about Bowie, and... well. Clearly it was my baby self not knowing WTF to do with all this stirring, restless energy that later turned out to be my skinnyandrogynousbisexualguy orientation thingy. And while I'd first seen Caligari and Casablanca as a teen in the early 90s, I wasn't ready for Connie until he pounced me in 2012. I would not have "got" him the same way and as hard until I was a grown-up, with a wide variety of experiences from many areas of life and a boatload of books/learning behind me. Just... no way.

5: A director it took you time to warm up to

-If anything, I've cooled off various directors I was impressed by when younger. So much of the auteur stuff gets wanky and self-imposing, in this Arrogant Artist Guy "look at my GENIUS big VISION and also insecurity about my penis size" kind of way. I like directors who can be warm and have fun and who show some real humanity (not wanky anvilly/kitchen sink-y sort of "humanity" either). Maybe Branagh? I found him a bit annoying as a kid, but now fap all over his stuff because now I'm old enough to Get It. He is the best kind of fanboy director; his geekiness is catching. Listening to his Thor commentary was a real eye-opener into my realising just how massive a nerd he is, and in a good, "one of us" kind of way.

6: Top five favorite soundtracks of your favorite movie composer

-There isn't just one! But Clint Mansell and Debbie Wiseman turn to gold everything they touch. Debbie especially is hugely unknown still, but she has this most amazing, swellingly Romantic music full of sweeping emotion that I just can't rec her enough. Do check her out; she'll give you goosebumps.

7: Three movies that defined your teen/childhood years

-I think I mentioned those already! But as a teenager, Bram Stoker's Dracula, La Reine Margot and Heavenly Creatures were formative. There were others I obsessed about way more than those, but they weren't as influential--it's more like they were massaging buttons I already had.

8: Sci-fi or westerns?

-Blake's 7! AKA "The Dirty Dozen in Space."

9: Are there any movies you own more than one copy of?

-Ahhahaha. AAAHHAHAHAHA! Of The Thief of Bagdad, I own: The Criterion clusterfuck with the awful clumsy cover someone had their 5-year-old draw, the Nordic DVD, the German Blu-Ray because I live on the edge (what with those Veidt Eye Closeups in HD being a hazard to any uterus) and at least three different digital copies. Because I'm me. I also own two digital copies and one DVD of Casablanca, three digital and one DVD of A Woman's Face and don't get me started on the British telefantasy I have on both DVD and VHS. I have spare copies of both the Caligari Masters of Cinema release and the ITV DVD of The Spy In Black, so I guess I should throw them at somebody.

10: Physical media or streaming?

-Neither. Video files firmly saved onto and run from my hard drive. Fuck streaming with its choppiness (ruins the viewing experience for me) and physical media are usually beyond my budget (unless I save up for a Connie DVD). Besides, I rip my favourite movie discs onto my HD anyway. I want to be able to gif that shit, dammit!

11: Are there any movies you watch on special occasions every year (Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, your mother's aunt's wedding anniversary, etc.)

-Used to do Nightmare Before Christmas on Halloween, but not any more. I still attempt ToB every Christmas. And I used to do All Through The Night with wine on my birthday, but as I can't tolerate alcohol anymore, the experience of Watching ATTN Drunk is no more. Someone start a Halloween tradition with me where we watch either The Student of Prague or Eerie Tales (or both) every year?

12: What movie do you most associate with your best friend(s)?

-Gosh, so few have stayed, so it's more like "movie that reminds you of a broken friendship," yay...?! I've learned to try and not associate movies with people that way any more, because it's more painful than it's worth. Connie is my best friend. He's like Krishna that way.

13: Name a movie adaptation you thought was better than or equal to its source material.

-LOTR put in more facial features and characterisation than Tolkien ever did, and did the tales far less fucking tediously. Imagine if you'd had to sit and watch hobbits walking through the countryside for 6 hours with barely anything happening?! Yeah...

14: What genres do your favorite movies tend to be?

-Historical, fantasy, Gothic Romantic, just Romantic stuff on the whole. More old than new movies these days. Why watch shitty modern chick flicks when I have far better characterisation and far less narrowly defined female lives in old-timey "women's pictures?" And guys who actually fucking shaved, dressed in clothes that were tailored for them instead of rented and saggy, whose bodily expressions weren't frozen for fear of "fagginess," and who weren't pumped full of 'roids.

15: Are you a fan of period dramas and if so, what era do you enjoy best?

-Yes. I love me some costume dramas, but I am seriously picky about them--most post-90s ones have been fucking awful and tend to feature shitty costumes and unkempt hair that would've sent real historical people to Bedlam, wobblycam from hell, vomit-inducingly excessive modernisation to be "edgy", and that one painfully skeletal bint they shove into every period drama ever these days, so it's... slim pickings for a history nerd, these days. There aren't many good ones set in the 17th century/Baroque era, which I love the most: the two Baroque dramas I wholeheartedly love are both series. (The Devil's Whore and By The Sword Divided.) The Angeliques and Musketeer adaptations are riddled with flaws, but there are some glowing bits within. As for The Golden Age of Islam... bloody hell, there really aren't that many good ones out there, are there?! ToB and Jodhaa Akbar and Disney's Aladdin, obviously. La Reine Margot isn't "my" period but it's great, as is Dangerous Liaisons (also not my period)--those are so fucking perfect. And the Connie period dramas, well... I think of them as primarily "silent movies" or "old movies," actually. Of those, The Student of Prague, ToB and The Wandering Jew are the best "costume" ones, IMHO. (I'd probs enjoy Lucrezia Borgia and Carlos and Elisabeth way more, were the copies we have not so smudgy.)

16: Name a movie you love that you would recommend to just about everyone.

-Ah, but we know there are always cynical cunts out there who'd give even Casablanca two stars, so what's the point? I'd still recommend it, though. And The Lion King, I guess.

17: Name a movie you love that you consider an acquired taste.

-Honestly, I'm thinking of telly rather than movies again. You will pry my cherished copy of The Time Monster from my cold, dead hands. Does The Devil of Winterborne count as a movie or TV? That's how far back my love for Mark Gatiss goes. Um... Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood makes me fucking cry with laughter (the comedic timing is what does it. *beat* "Ain't dat some shit!"). Of Connie's oeuvre, yes, I know Bella Donna is rubbish, but Connie and Mary are SIZZLING and horny and juicy and it's Valid as a BDSM porn movie. And the novel is actually good.

18: Name a film you like directed by/starring a filmmaker/actor you normally don't care for.

-Not so much actor/director, but I did *not* expect to love Thor as much as I did, because I expected a dumb popcorn movie but got great adventure cinema with a touch of Shakespeare instead. I really am not the right audience for regular Marvel features at all, before or after. Fuck Marvel up its dumb macho Republican ass. But Thor is fucking beautiful and operatic and poetic and majestic and Pagan and shit. Branagh knows what I like.

19: Name a movie that blew your mind.

-A Woman's Face (1941). Because. Holy. Fuck. How can I keep on finding yet more details in it six years after first watching it, having watched it countless times by now?! And obvs all the other stuff, like the shockingly good female POV, amazing and complex woman protagonist, amazing writing, amazing ensemble cast, amazing direction, amazing lighting, amazing evil Torsten Slinkypussy Barring and The. Goddamn. Attic. Scene.

20: What genre mash-up would you most love to see that either hasn't been done yet or hasn't been done enough?

-Feminist-savvy historical romance with fantasy elements and hot explicit sex that's not shit. Basically, like the stuff you see in my fics, but better paced and woven into coherent adventure movies.

21: The coolest movie you've ever seen

-Too, too many. But Bogie was the coolest. And Claude Rains had the best acting skills. And Conrad Veidt was Conrad motherfucking Veidt. So what with those three mountains of coolness all converging under the Moroccan sky, I'm sure it's safe to say "Casablanca."

Amorette Muzingo | Teaching Artist of January, 2017

Q: How did you discover your interest in the arts and how did you know that it was something that you wanted to pursue professionally, as an artist or as an artist teacher?

A: Growing up in an intimidatingly artistic family, it wasn’t ever a question to not pursue the arts; if that makes sense. The success of my father, my aunts, my uncles, and everyone else motivated me to stand alongside them in my artistic endeavors. The path I had chosen was quite bumpy - I went from fervently pursuing the arts/music from age 9 to abandoning the idea of art school altogether in my senior year of high school. I then enrolled in community college, where I began studying art history, almost dropped out, and then was accepted here at UCLA to study Art History. I came across VAPAE towards the end of my first year at UCLA and the classes that I took revitalized the passion I had at such a young age. I feel like VAPAE is a space where I can utilize my skills and background knowledge of the arts and child care while embracing that I’m a 12 year old trapped in a 23 year old’s body. 

Q: Describe what the young artists in your VAPAE afterschool arts program are working on and the process they’re using.

A: Since we work with such a unique population, we really wanted to have curriculums that best suit the needs and interests of the girls at Aviva. With so many complex and diverse situations in the room, we developed a curriculum called The Art of Mindfulness, Tea, and Sanctuary. Every class began with a tea ceremony, in which we would sit at a table in a circle, pour tea for one another, and give appreciative comments to those around us. This established the most fantastic sense of community - the girls were unafraid to try a myriad of projects - such as installation, book making, origami, ceramics, activist art, garlands, pillow making, and more. The girls essentially created their own space in which everything was hand-made by them - really instilling the sense of community and sanctuary. This upcoming quarter is really exciting. We’re going to be transitioning into a marriage of visual and digital arts - Aviva has this fantastic Digital Media Lab. The main process will be Digital Storytelling and Narratives - so stay tuned for animated masks, reflective journaling, music making, poetry, and more!

Q: Why is an enrichment opportunity like this important for those participating? What do they gain?

A: I have heard, first-hand, the gains of positivity and awareness that VAPAE programs have provided to our students. One of our girls had been frustrated with one of her other peers, and instead of reacting in a negative fashion, she said, “I really think that that girl would benefit from the art classes we have, it would be really good for her”. Our student was able to recognize the impact that we made in our classroom in just 10 weeks and had developed a more mindful and caring approach to a tough situation. Participants in VAPAE programs are a special kind of community - it’s the chance to really connect on a deeper level of creativity and growth, and is immensely inclusive. The daily rhythms of school can be overwhelming, but with VAPAE after school programs, it provides this space in which the students are able to be present in themselves and with others and are able to really create something incredible. 

Q: Did you have an opportunity like this when you were a younger artist? If yes, how did it help shape your love of art? If no, in what ways could a program like this have helped you?

A: I did have an opportunity somewhat similar to VAPAE - it was an after school/weekend music program in Hollywood called School of Rock (fun fact, the movie was loosely based on the program). There, I was able to take drum lessons that were organized under a common artist or theme: David Bowie, Women Who Rock, etc. We would rehearse every week after school and at the end of the 10 weeks, we performed at venues such as The Roxy and The Troubadour. Although it helped me develop lifelong friendships and further my passion for music, the cost of the program was quite a difficult setback, and it was difficult to commute to Hollywood. I really, really favor the openness that VAPAE provides, regardless of economic status, race, gender, or geography.

Q: What has this experience as a teaching artist or arts facilitator taught you about yourself?

A: Wayne Kramer, famed musician and guest lecturer, once told our class, “I am always a humbled student”. I really try to embody that within every moment of my teaching - because I am still always learning. I have continued developing patience and flexibility - certain teaching strategies will sort of pop up in the moment and I’ve learned to embrace it. I’ve become more of a person who is content with being in the present, instead of constantly planning for the future (but finding a balance, of course!). Being a teaching artist has given me deeper connections to my students than I ever thought possible - and in return, my students teach me more than words could describe.

Q: What do you personally gain as a teaching artist, arts facilitator?

A: I still can’t believe that this is the work that I do - I never thought my work could be this fun. I have gained a HUGE sense of gratitude towards the amazing people I get to work alongside and to the students that I get to know. I also end up surprising myself with new skills that I learn, whether it be artistic or educational or anywhere in between. I truly never thought that I would be a teacher, but I gain a bit of confidence each day that I’m in the classroom because that is where I feel most comfortable.

Q: What are the benefits to you as a student/graduate in the UCLA VAPAE program? Was this program a good choice for you? If so, why?

A: Yes! Very, very good choice! Truthfully, a part of me resented the large size of UCLA and how there are so many people. VAPAE is where I found a second home, where I spent my Thursday nights. The educators in VAPAE are accessible and authentic, and the lessons I have learned in the classes I’ve taken have really shaped me to the person I’m growing into. I have had absolutely incredible opportunities in my time here, and it would not have been possible if it were not for my participation in VAPAE. 

Q: Are there any anecdotes from your VAPAE Studio Sessions (or Arts Education Teaching Sequence) that stand out to you? Perhaps you had a break‐through with a student or saw some particularly noticeable growth in that student through this program, collaboration etc. Maybe something surprised you or made you think about art or teaching in a new way.

A: I believe that I used this as a sample video for my Arts Ed teaching sequence portfolio - but there was this moment where I had said a joke to the class while teaching, subsequently all began giggling, and the moment I brought them back to the lesson this massive silence fell upon the room. In that moment, I recognized that I alone had built not only a rapport with 35 6th graders, but had also gained their respect and intrigue. They were so inquisitive about the lesson that day, it was so amazing and satisfying that I felt I was on the right track. 

Q: What are your short-term and long‐term career goals?

A: I think I have a hard time with this question because there is just so much that I would like to do, that I haven't figured out yet how to actually articulate it. However, I will try! I know that now I have graduated I would really like to return to my artistic and musical practices, as well as develop better foreign language skills. I studied Spanish for quite a while and feel it would be tremendously useful. I suppose those are my short term goals. As far as long term, I really see myself continuing in arts education - either involved with art therapy, or museum education, or working with incarcerated/marginalized youth. At this point, I'm excited and ready to try anything within the field.

Also as weird as it is to admit considering... well, everything about him, but I really like Ripper? He serves his role in the show well (being gross/the punching bag/the joke character) but they also give him some layers to make him a bit more interesting and i think Axel/Ripper is actually kind of cute?? Like he feels like Sam to me, one-note at first but they give him extra stuff to do with other characters that make him more compelling to the point where he ends up growing on me? Like how he was able to get some answers right in the glass bridge option A option B quiz challenge! (also he gives me Eddy vibes from Ed, Edd n Eddy and my sympathy for that specific character type might be blinding me)

And I love what they're doing with Bowie and his whole morality dilemma with Raj! Also really hoping MK/Julia becomes a thing, if those older interviews they did before the show aired are still valid and there's still a lesbian couple waiting to be revealed, I would genuinely be so happy if it was them! Their dynamic is everything

totally agree with caleb, i get the sense that he either has no idea priya is interpreting his actions as flirting and just thinks he's doing a great job at alliance building or he's aware but just ignoring that because he wants an alliance with her and he's not interested in a romance. unfortunately after episode 4 i could see him having a moment of "omg priya almost got eliminated and i got sad not because my alliance would be gone but SHE would be gone omg i like priya" which wouldn't be where i want it to go, but if it does go that route i think it'd be funny if caleb has no idea how to flirt now that he actually like priya. but fingers crossed for it just being platonic on his part i love aro caleb and i really like him and priya as friends

i agree that ripper is kind of filling a sam-esque place in the season, ive definitely enjoyed him more this season than i did last season though im not sure i like ripaxel but honestly i think if it wasn't so rushed i might be persuaded to enjoy it. i do think ripper having a crush is very cute and i would love a friendship between him and axel. honestly might write some fics where his feelings for her are onesided but they become friends (kind of already wrote a fic for that lol)

veeeeeery intrigued to see how this moral dilemma goes for bowie and raj. honestly im love the dynamic of the skunkbutt 5, with mkulia going full evil lesbians, wayne and raj being himbos who don't want to cheat, and bowie being the team leader who's caught in the middle. super fun vibes! also BEGGING that mkulia becomes canon because holy shit they are being such sneaky bastards together and falling in love in the process. like even if they don't become canon as long as what's going on now isn't terribly derailed i'll be happy. but i have hope that they will become the first canon wlw couple and i feel like that hope is realistic to have. which is INCREDIBLE.
