But I Don’t Even Have a Contract!

When I was 16, I had a stint as a small-time social media star on Twitter — not because I’m particularly interesting or anything, but for two reasons: a) I got on Twitter really early in 2007 when it was way easier to get followers and engagement due to the site being less noisy and more ‘stupid’ in terms of algorithms and b) I stood out from a lot of other minor Twitter stars because I didn’t let it get to my head; while a lot of them were egotistical and haughty, I followed everyone back, turned ‘haters’ into friends instead of retaliating, etc.

Through this fleeting fame, my former boss found me. He said he was setting up a regional media studio to help small- and medium-sized local businesses with their social media marketing, and he planned to eventually franchise the business into other cities. He hired me on the basis of my large social following (81,000 followers at the time). Obviously, having a large social following doesn’t automatically mean you know how to market businesses on social media, but I adapted and studiously researched how to do my job properly.

My boss didn’t come from a creative background or a marketing role — he came from a property background, and was just sort of winging it in finding an alternative source of income after the housing crash. Being as young as I was at the time, I didn’t really think about any of this stuff. The outcome was that I never received any training, had no real guidance in what I was doing, and was generally left to my own devices. Younger me thought it was great! I saw it as ‘freedom’, but looking back, I realize it was far too much freedom.

The side effects of this disparity between my social media skills and his inability to communicate creative ideas manifested themselves as people trying to cut past the business and come straight to me, asking me directly as an individual whether I’d do work for them rather than give my boss the money. I was respectful (or naïve) enough to open up to my boss about this, and that’s when things started getting a little bit manipulative. He told me I could go my own way or remain part of a business that’d soon be growing across the country.

Fair enough, I thought. So I stayed, and one year in (I was 17/18 at this time) I realized that managing brands via social media had naturally morphed me into something of a graphic designer. A lot of my time was spent creating eye-catching visuals in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. and so I suggested to my boss that we expand our media offering to include logo, graphic, and print design, and visual branding consultancy. Again, I received no training — I worked all day and self-studied late into the night.

  This pattern snowballed over the years. By the time I was 21, I was a social media manager, visual branding designer, copywriter, photographer, video editor, and web developer — all skills I developed independently with no input or guidance from my boss. The business was still operating in just one city, and my boss had started spending less and less time in the office. I still didn’t realize this wasn’t particularly normal, until clients who came to the office to meet me constantly asked where he was.

One day, a client went as far as to say: “You’re basically running the business at this point!” It was a huge ‘glass shatter’ moment for me, and I suddenly realized that, yeah, although I wasn’t actually managing the business and its admin work etc., without me, there wouldn’t be a service or product to sell. What’s more, my wages hadn’t gone up, even though my ‘this is great, I have so much freedom!’ mind-set had motivated me to continue working on stuff related to the business when I got home.

As I was nearing 22, the owner of the building where the business’ office was located asked me if I’d help him fix his computer (it was just running really slowly because he hadn’t managed his files very well). Not really thinking of it as work, I agreed, and headed into his office after work to help him out. As luck would have it, my boss walked in to hand over that month‘s rent, so he saw me there. He looked surprised, but didn’t comment — he just gave the dude the rent and left the building.

The next day, my boss wasted no time in probing me about what I was doing. He was speaking to me like a cop would speak to a suspect, asking me how long I’d been doing work for the landlord, what kind of work I was doing, why I hadn’t folded the work into the business, etc. I explained I was just fixing up his computer, and he leapt into a lecture about how we needed to keep all work inside the business, or else we would never be able to grow into other cities.

  I turned 22. I’d been there for five years, my wages hadn’t gone up, I wasn’t allowed to do any work outside of the business, I hadn’t witnessed any of the growth I’d initially been promised, my boss was only in the office 25% of the time, and I saw him uploading Instagram Stories from him lunching, working out at the gym, walking his dogs, taking day trips etc. while I was in the office managing everything. A lot of the time he didn’t even warn me he’d not be in the office. It became the norm that if he didn’t turn up, I’d be running everything for the day. Because I’d grown with the business from my youngest working age, I didn’t know any different, so all of this felt completely normal to me. And because I worked all day and all night and had no firm social life, I never got any outside perspective, until one day, on a whim, I opened up to the landlord about it. He hadn’t even realized I was the one doing all the work — he figured it was split fairly 50/50. He said the amount of work I was producing was on the same level as an agency with three or four employees.

I started managing all of the branding, social media, and website maintenance for the landlord’s business, but didn’t broadcast that news to anyone. As I was nearing the age of 23, I met my now-fiancée, a perfectly feisty woman who, as soon as I told her about my situation, passionately advised I start my own media studio. This is where I entered the ‘long breakup’ period of my job, where I got increasingly depressed at work and physically felt my productivity slow to a near-halt. My boss noticed, but never talked to me about it face-to-face. He started sending me irritated emails full of swear words demanding explanations for why I hadn’t delivered certain work by certain times and dates, while he was off sunning at the beach. It was like someone had pulled out his cork and let all the toxicity out in one torrent. My girlfriend hated him, and gently pushed me to the point where I felt like I was ready to confront him about the dead end we’d wound up in.

I asked a few of my friends about it, just to get a wider set of viewpoints on how I should go about it. They asked me things like, what does your contact say about you leaving the company and working with other businesses independently? Legal stuff, y’know. And that’s when I realized my lack of training over the past six years had also left me ignorant of the formalities of employment — I never had a contract! The real kicker was, I never had employee liability coverage either. My boss wasn’t even doing the admin stuff properly.

Obviously, that meant he also had no control over me when it came to contracts, so I literally just walked in (without my laptop — I’m now just realizing he never provided equipment either, yikes) and sat there waiting for him to arrive. Thankfully, it was one of the days he decided to turn up. He went and sat down in his chair, asked me where my laptop was and why I wasn’t working etc., and so I just straight-up told him that I was leaving the company to start my own media venture.

He laughed a patronizing laugh and simply said, “Alright, good luck then.” Part of me felt like this was normal, because he was usually quite cold like that, but another part of me knew that there should have been some sort of emotion and deeper discussion in that moment. I wanted to say, “so that’s it, then?” to try to flesh the talk out, but that really was it. He just turned to his computer and began typing away as if I wasn‘t there. So I just turned around and left, went home, and that was it.

He did WhatsApp me a message later that day (all his caring and considerate communication came through digital means — perhaps he hired someone on a zero-hour contract to inject emotion into his texts?) asking if we could meet at the pub for a proper goodbye. And we did. It was a nice gesture, but it felt very awkward and forced, as if he’d spoken to someone about it and they’d coaxed him into doing it. He shook my hand, wished me good luck (much more genuinely this time), and we parted ways.

  Three months later, I’d tripled my income as a freelancer. All of those clients who’d try to come to me directly over the years — it was like a floodgate had opened, and they all came rushing to me. I hadn’t told them I’d left, but obviously, they realized it themselves when they went to the office and I was never there. I felt bad about ‘stealing’ clients away from my former boss, but what was I supposed to do? I couldn’t just abandon the people I’d been working with just because of morals. That‘d be immoral, if anything. I continued working with the landlord and even travelled with him a few times to build my solo filmmaking portfolio by documenting his brand’s work across the UK, including his talks at business seminars. We developed a very close working relationship, to the point where just my work for his company was earning me more than all the work I did for my former boss. He started sharing a few bits of gossip with me about how my old boss had begun paying rent later and later. I figure perhaps his cash flow had something to do with it, but the landlord also showed me an email my old boss had written in which he’d expressed his anger at the landlord for ‘colluding’ with me and pushing me to leave his company.

The further I distanced myself from the company, the more I realized how toxic he behaved towards everyone he came into contact with. I could never see it from the inside. Every time I checked the old company’s website, a new service had been removed, because it wasn’t something he could offer anyone anymore.

Back in November 2018, the landlord told me that he was kicking my old boss out of the office after he failed to pay rent for three months. A few weeks after that, the landlord proposed that we go into business together to create a separate media studio solely focused on the industry his business operates within. He said that we’d take the old company’s office once my former boss had moved out, and that I could also use that office for my own freelance venture, free of charge.

One year after leaving, I’ve taken 25% of my old boss’ clients, occupied his office, and quadrupled my income.

There’s a part of me that feels guilty about all of this — he’s a guy who didn’t quite know what to do after the housing market crashed and tried something out which didn’t go too well. But at the same time, I can’t feel too bad for someone who I believe took advantage of me for half a decade. If you treat someone with disrespect, you end up with very little. If you treat someone with respect, they give you a free office and offer to start a new business with you.

  TL;DR: Boss never did anything properly — no training, no contracts, no insurance, very little respect, not much guidance, empty promises about business growth, etc. Everything I learned independently resulted in me quadrupling my income and taking over his office within a year of leaving his company.

... Holiday Gaming, Year 5

It is absolutely batshit that I’ve been running these stupid Risus one-shot adventures every December for half a decade.  And yet, here we are, and once again I close out a year’s tabletop RPG play with a chaotic mess of wild improvisation and half-baked ideas loosely themed to midwinter celebrations.  You can read about previous years adventures here, here, here, and here.  

This year formed a direct sequel to last year’s game, which was itself a semi-sequel to the first holiday one shot.  

Following a lawsuit alleging image infringement, trademark violations, defamation, and mail fraud (among other charges), Lucifer settled out of court.  As a result of the arbitration, Lucifer (Satan) is legally obligated to fulfill those letters intended for Santa which, due to misspelling, have been delivered to the Infernal Pit instead.  The letters from Good Children, in particular, must be fulfilled on Christmas Eve as is the expected contract with Santa.  Of course, Lucifer himself is embedded waist-deep in Cocytus, the frozen lake at the bottom of Hell, and anyway you don’t get to reign over the entire Inferno without delegating, so the work has been farmed out to lesser demons.  The easy letters are dealt with by imps and various minor servitors, but there remain a few more problematic missives, and the Devil has appointed these to five of the lords of Hell to handle before Christmas morning.  

Our player characters are:

HAAGENTI, President of Hell, governor over 33 legions, in the shape of a winged bull. (Polymath 4, Boozehound 3, Demon 2, Alchemist 1)

AMDUSIAS, Duke of Hell, governor over 29 legions, in the shape of an upright unicorn. (Magical Musician 4, Treebender 3, Booming Voice 2, Demon 1)

BARBATOS, Duke of Hell, governor over 30 legions, in the shaped of a devilish bearded man. (Demon 4, Dr. Doolittle 3, Treasure Hunter 2, Fortune Teller 1)

FURFUR, Earl of Hell, governor over 26 legions, in the shape of a hart with a fiery tail. (Cupid 4, Thunder and Lightning 3, Demon 2, Soothsayer 1)

MARCHOSIAS, Marquess of Hell, governor over 30 legions, in the shape of a winged wolf with a flaming mouth. (Rowdy Boy 4, Demon 3, Fundamentally Honest 2, Flamethrower 1)

Lucifer lays out the deal: Get this done before dawn. They’ve got to follow the rules Santa laid on in arbitration:

No teleporting inside the residence.  They can teleport to it, but must get inside physically.

No damage.  No blasting the walls down with hellfire or the like. Santa doesn’t do property damage.

No getting seen, unless being seen fosters belief in Santa Claus and the Magic of Christmas.

If milk and cookies or other snacks have been left out for Santa, they must be consumed.

Letters from Good Children must be fulfilled.

There are five Good Child letters left. Lucifer has provided them with a magic sack which will provide the next letter as each is fulfilled, and also potentially provide gifts or other useful tools (no guarantees).  The letters are revealed first with names and locations, and only once the party is at the residence is the child’s request made visible.  It is also established that the demons all basically have a roughly 13th-16th century European level of understanding.

LETTER ONE comes from Jimothy Sanchez of Passaic, New Jersey.  Jimothy lives with his father Oliver, stepmother Alanis, and his older stepsister Quinn. Jimothy is eight.

The demons arrive via teleportation outside the two-story suburban home of the Sanchez family.  They are confused by the environment, but immediately begin debating how to get in.  Examination of the letter reveals that Jimmy wants a “fidget spinner” and to “go to space like an astronaut.”

Barbatos begins interrogating a nightbird for information on how to get inside. “You’re tellin’ me you want to get in there to give a little boy a ‘present’?  You fuckin’ pervert,” the thickly-NJ-accented bird replies.  Eventually, the bird summons some pigeons, who attack Marchosias.  Furfur responds by summoning lighting to strike the bird’s tree, which splits and bursts into flames.

This wakes the father inside, who (as can be seen through the window) calls the fire department, although the demons are unclear on what’s happening.  Barbatos turns himself into an approximation of Santa (long white beard, red sharkskin suit, curling ram’s horns) as the fire department arrives. Marchosias and Haagenti teleport back to Dis to visit the infernal library and attempt to unravel the word “astronaut”. Amdusias attempts to pull a key out of the magic sack, but gets a viper instead, which she discards on the ground where it almost immediately bites a fireman.  Oliver Sanchez comes outside, and Barbatos introduces himself as Santa, leading to a great deal of confusion.  Marchosias and Haagenti return, and Haagenti attempts to sell the Santa con by turning into an elf, but succeeds only in turning into an Elf on the Shelf, all of which causes Mr. Sanchez to faint.  Barbatos picks up the EotS and they and Marchosias go inside.  After getting the rundown on what “astronaut” means, Barbatos attempts to get a book on Space from the bag, and gets a book about NASA.  Amdusias downs the milk and cookies, and is revolted by the lack of parasites.  Based on the book, he goes to the Moon, where he attempts to collect a footprint left there by astronauts.  Since it’s all moon dust, he just gets a fist of dust.  He brings that back and stuff it and a wooden top (provided by the sack in response to a request for a fidget spinner) into the stocking labeled Jimothy, and the demons collectively bug out while the firefighters attempt to revive their envenomed compatriot.  

LETTER TWO comes from the children of St. Guinefort’s Home for Disadvantaged Children, an archaic Catholic orphanage in NYC’s Lower East Side.  Surprisingly, the children have not requested anything unreasonable, but have requested a badminton set so they can play together.  Haagenti and Barbatos teleport to the roof of the building in search of a chimney, and finding one Barbatos tosses Haagenti (still in stuffed elf form) down it.  Haagenti hits a metal barrier and finds himself trapped.  Furfur joins them and drops a steaming, acidic load of demon poo down it, burning a hole through the closed flue and dumping Haagenti into a disused storeroom.  Barbatos turns into a rat and follows him down.  Haagenti attempts to take the form of a child and only manages to become a naked, horned baby with a devil’s tail, but is at least able to crawl around.  Barbatos goes for Santa mode again, but this time ends up worse, appearing gaunt and skeletal in his red garb.  Barbatos stuffs the baby Haagenti into the magic bag, a transimensional experience which shatters his mind and that of Furfur, who was scrying on their progress at the moment.  The two have a close encounter with and narrowly avoid the notice of a nun doing the rounds, and manage to quickly locate a room full of sleeping children, where a sad, Charlie-Brown-esque tree sits with no presents around.  Outside, Amdusias attempts to prevent any undue attention by summoning the sound of a traditional Christmas carol, but unwittingly makes everyone in earshot lose Whamageddon instead, followed by Fairytale of New York.

Back inside, Barbatos extracts the extremely dazed Haagenti from the sack, and then attempts to get a badminton set out of it.  The sack provides everything required: net, rackets, shuttlecocks, posts, post-hole digger, cardboard tube forms for pouring concrete anchors for the posts, bags of concrete, a backhoe and steamroller for flattening the court, turf, grass seed, chalk, a spreader, etc.  The room is very full, and the tree is entirely obscured.  

The demons retreat to Central Park, where they have a brief altercation with some hoodlums, before heading to the next home.

LETTER THREE was from Emily Chen of Hollywood, California, where she lives with her mother Amy and three brothers Ted, Leo, and Bobby in a three-bedroom apartment on the fifth floor of a walk-up building.  Emily, as the letter reveals, wants a pony.

Amdusias’s tree-bending bends a palm over the fence and lets everybody past the gates of the building, and the demons gather around the door to apartment.  Barbatos uses his treasure-finding skills to locate a key.  It is inside the apartment.  A cat is sensed inside, and Barbatos attempts to convince the cat to let them in.  The cat explains that even if it wanted to, it can’t work the lock.  A bribe of fish is offered if the cat will retrieve the key and push it under the door - the cat agrees if they will give it sushi.  A key is pushed under the door.  It does not fit in the lock.  Haagenti turns it into a more ductile metal to make it fit into the keyhole, and then attempts to firm it up so it can be turned, but in doing so ends up fusing it into the keyhole.  The cat demands sushi, which when extracted from the bag is revealed to be a piece of tamago nigiri.  An offer of salmon is made, but the cat again points out they are not capable of working the locks.  One of the demons tried to turn the cat into a human.  The locks click, the door opens, and a very sexy, very naked, and entirely testicle-less human man is revealed, demanding salmon.  The salmon is given, but the former cat asks for its balls back in exchange for letting them in and not just blowing up their spot right then and there.  Magic succeeds in restoring the man-cat’s genitals, and after garbing himself in a child’s gym shorts and some flip-flops, the cat leaves into the Hollywood night and the demons are free to enter. 

The living room bears a silver metallic tree, which confuses them, but they quickly and successfully extract a full-sized live pony and a bale of moist hay form the sack, the demons depart.

LETTER FOUR comes from Bethany-Ann Mayweather of South Carolina.  Bethany, it turns out, lives in a heavily-fortified survivalist compound in the woods with her dad (Steve), two brothers (Jesse and Dave), and two sisters (Katie and Donna-Lee.  The entire place is surrounded by an electrified fence topped with razor wire.

Emily would like to go to school like other children.

Things get weird.  Amdusias bends a tree over the fence, and Furfur drops down to discover that the clear ground between the fence and the building itself is heavily mined, exploding instantly (but non-fatally, because demon).  Lights are going on at the compound as Furfur starts bouncing around setting off mines and motion-sensing lamps.

Marchosias has the idea that the humans at the first house had somehow summoned that metal chariot in response to the burning tree by talking into that weird curved oblong shape, and that if they do the same maybe the metal chariot will help them get in.  Reaching into the bag extracts a banana.  Marchosias holds it to the side of his head and says hello.

“Hello?” says a sleepy voice from the banana.  “Who is this?”

“Uh, Mark,” responds Marchosias, who is Fundamentally Honest.  “Are you the...cops?  There is a little girl and there is a lot of gunpowder and fire and explosions.”

“What?  No, this is Raffi.  How did you get this number?  Is this a prank?”

It is established that this is not a prank (”Did Steve put you up to this?” “There’s a Steve here but no.” “From Blue’s Clues.” “I don’t know who or what that is.” “Mark, I’m looking at this caller ID here, and it just says ‘banana’.  What’s going on?”).  Barbatos teleports to this ‘Raffi’, the shock of which causes Raffi to suffer a heart attack and die. Barbatos resurrects Raffi as an undead revenant, and after difficulty (”Raffi, how do we call the police?” “RING.  RING.  RING.  BANANAPHONE.”) manage to extract the magical incantation “911″ from the former children’s entertainer.  Marchosias invokes this to the banana and connects to emergency services, and after a very complicated discussion (and some light aerial reconnaissance to pinpoint a location) succeeds in convincing them that there is a dangerous, heavily-armed incident at the compound and a child is in danger.  SWAT is being sent.  Meanwhile, Furfur is drawing gunfire from the survivalist dad, and Amdusias uses spectral music to distract him while they slip inside.

The six-foot-tall unicorn-headed naked figure reaches the crude two-dimensional paper Christmas tree inside the survival bunker and attempts to eat the dry saltines and rehydrated powdered milk that has been left out.  They are interrupted by the sleepy-eyed and tow-headed Bethany-Ann, who asks who they are.  Amdusias explains that they’re subbing in because Blitzen is sick.  Blitzen is Bethany-Ann’s favorite.  Amdusias tells her she’s going to get to go to school soon, and after a hug sends Bethany-Ann to hide under her bed until some nice people come get her.  Furfur attempts to use his lightning powers to dash Blitzen-like over the compound to drive home the Christmas-ness of it all, and instead burns holes through a number of trees as he accelerates to an appreciable fraction of the speed of light.  The remaining demons depart as militarized police descend on the compound.

THE FINAL LETTER is from Marcus Fitzwilliams III, son of Buck and Nancy, brother to Samantha, of Casper, Wyoming.  Marcus is ten, and he would like “a fortnite”.  The demons gather outside the ranch-style suburban home and debate what that means.  Eventually, they decide this means he wants to spend a night in a fort, and locating the Fort Caspar Museum nearby they plan to liberate the child from the house and take him there.  They decide against a plan to bring the fort to the house on the grounds that this might cause property damage.  Everyone but Marchosias goes to the backyard; Marchosias, who at this point looks like Bea Arthur because of reasons, remains out front with the banana to allay suspicion.

In the backyard, Barbatos again attempts to find a key, but fails.  He does detect a dog, and attempts to convince the dog to let them in.  The dog declines. “Stranger bad.  Bite stranger.”  An offer of bacon is made, and raw bacon pulled from the sack.  “Bacon good.  Bite bacon.  Bite stranger.  Good dog.”  This goes back and forth for a bit, and the dog starts barking.  Barbatos attempts to turn into a dog to sell the bit, and turns into a massive, ebon mastiff with glowing red eyes.  The bacon falls on the ground.  Furfur is now hiding in trees behind the house, joined by Amdusias, who attempts to keep things under control by bellowing “somebody let that dog out for a walk”, which comes out in a titanic demonic shout which rattles windows and kills the azaleas.  Lights come on.  The backdoor opens and Buck, carrying a rifle, looks at the giant demon dog and Haagenti, who is still a demonic baby, and the pile of bacon.  In the trees, the flaming tail of Furfur glows. 

“MA, GET UP AND CHECK THE FRONT, I THINK THE METHHEADS ARE TRYIN’ TO ROB US.”

Shit goes sideways quick.  Nancy opens the front door and sees Bea Arthur standing in her yard talking into a banana, and confirms the meth suspicion to buck.  The dog escapes into the yard and eats the bacon.  Baby Haagenti jumps on mastiff Barbatos’ back and the two dash into the house as Buck fires wildly at them and the intruders in the trees.  Nancy shoots the bananaphone and the side of Bea Arthur’s face.  Inside the house, Haagenti and Barbatos dodge bullets semi-successfully.  Haagenti scarfs cookies while Barbatos abandons the original plan and reaches into the bag while thinking “Fort Night”, pulling forth a card with a download code for Minecraft.  Furfur pulls his lightning-assisted flight trick over the house while Amdusias tries a bellowing “HO HO HO” so loud and infernal it shatters windows in houses throughout the neighborhood.

The list complete, the demons depart for Dis, where they are quickly met by Asmodeus, who tells them the boss wants to see them. The demon lords report total success, but receive a thorough chewing-out from Lucifer, who details the many, many violations they have committed and the agonies he is going to inflict on them for their failure.  

“You know the ring where we bury people up to their face in flaming shit?”  “Yeah, that one’s great.”  “Not for the humans.  I’m going to turn you all into humans and stick you there for the next thousand years.”

The demons attempt to portray their actions in a favorable light, and Amdusias protests and attempts to get the sounds of Michael Bublé’s Let it Snow to play and encourage the spirit of the holiday to earn them some clemency. However, it turns instead into Snow’s Informer as Belial reveals himself from behind Lucifer’s torso and tells them he was following and reporting on them the whole time, everyone gets in a Christmas “no, fuck you”, our heroes are consigned to flaming shit, and credits roll. Happy Holidays, everyone.

so your pet has had a seizure - now what?

watching your pet have a seizure - whether it’s “fly biting” or a total grand mal - can be a deeply traumatic experience. maybe they were sleeping when it happened. maybe they were romping around with their favorite toy and suddenly fell over. regardless, now they’re flailing, their neck is rigid, they’ve lost control of their bowels and bladder, and if you’re like me when my dog first had a grand mal, you’re probably crying. so, what do you do?

first of all, what do seizures look like? in animals, they can manifest in many different ways. a generalized/grand mal, or the most extreme seizure, is when they lose total consciousness, fall over, become rigid, and spasm or paddle their legs like they’re swimming. many tend to urinate or defecate during this time. some stop breathing and turn blue. some drool excessively. some seizures are more minor and the animal may briefly lose consciousness, go limp, stare off into space unresponsively, or have facial twitches. some seizures are psychomotor, meaning they manifest as weird repetitive behaviors such as frantic tail chasing, lip smacking, snapping at the air (”fly biting”), excessive vocalizing, or aggression that are unusual for that specific animal. one animal can have different types of seizures. my dog usually has full-body generalized seizures, but when she was first started on phenobarbital, those eased up into facial twitches.

make sure your pet is away from harmful objects. this includes cords, sharp objects, furniture legs, etc - anything that can cause injury. they are completely unconscious at worst and disoriented at best and don’t understand where they are in relation to their surroundings. do not put your hands anywhere near their mouths. their jaws are also affected by muscle contractions and can reflexively snap down. it has absolutely no reflection on your relationship because they don’t know they’re doing this. the best thing you can do is gently move them to an open area and wait it out. i try to slip a puppy pad or towel under mine because she’s inclined to urinate.

time the seizure. this is SO critical, not just for you but for your vet. before i started using the stopwatch on my phone, i was trying to estimate it just by observation and i was surprised to realize i was overestimating it by a full minute and in reality, her seizures were roughly 10-20 seconds in duration. a seizure that approaches five minutes is an immediate medical emergency.

monitor their recovery. the recovery phase, also called the post-ictal phase, varies wildly between dogs. they may be unconscious for awhile. if possible, it’s a good idea to check the color of their gums and tongues by using something like a nail filer or wooden tongue depressor so you’re not sticking your fingers in their mouth. pink is good, purple means they are very low on oxygen, but if they’re breathing normally they should pink up. wrap ice packs and place them on their bellies and footpads or squirt alcohol on their footpads. overheating is the biggest complication of seizures, especially for overweight animals. they may have lost control of their bowels and bladder, so you can clean them up as best you can. it doesn’t hurt to pet them and speak softly to them. some may pop up and act almost normal. others may wake up but be temporarily blind, disoriented, clumsy, clingy, aloof, aggressive, hungry, thirsty, or have other behavioral changes for an hour or so afterwards.

write down everything that happened. this includes the date, the time the seizure started, the duration of the seizure, description of the seizure, any changes you might have noticed shortly before onset, and what their recovery was like. i keep a seizure journal in the form of index cards. this not only helps you keep track of seizures  - especially if there are more than one - but helps you and your vet look at patterns and frequency. some don’t seem to have any triggers, but others do. stress is a common one. our groomer has had to bring a dog to treatment more than once because it started seizing as soon as he put it in the tub.

are seizures an emergency? when in doubt, my answer is always yes, please take it to the vet as soon as possible. however, i understand that sometimes these things happen after hours and emergency services can be expensive. in this case, i’ll tell you to look at context. one seizure by itself isn’t necessarily an emergency, as long as it’s not secondary to another event - trauma, liver complications (is your animal yellow?), poison, etc are all events that demand immediate attention by a vet, seizures or no. if your animal has more than one seizure in a 24 hours period, that’s called clustering, and is a medical emergency. having one seizure lowers the threshold, making them more susceptible to having them. the more they have, the less time they have to recover from the previous one, meaning their brains aren’t completely able to stop misfiring and can potentially lead to the worst case scenario: status epilepticus. this happens when the brain can’t stop misfiring, period, and the pet can’t stop seizing. status epilepticus refers to a seizure that lasts five minutes or longer. this is an absolute emergency. your pet’s brain will essentially fry itself and lead to permanent brain damage and death. personally, i would have my emergency vet on the phone once my dog hit the 3 minute mark.

what happens at the vet? your vet will want background, not just about the seizure itself but the context of it and history of the pet. they may want to do blood work and x-rays. ct scans and mris are great, but out of most people’s means. animals from pet stores or backyard breeders are more prone to epilepsy because of poor breeding practices, such as inbreeding. certain dog breeds are more prone to epilepsy, such as herding dogs, boxers, and cocker spaniels. the age of the pet matters - very young animals may have a liver defect called a portosystemic shunt, while much older animals are more likely to have a brain tumor. it can be an emotionally draining appointment.

epilepsy can be managed. if your pet is diagnosed with epilepsy, the good news is that most pets respond to medication and can have normal lifespans. the first drug of choice is phenobarbital. it’s inexpensive and very effective. chronic use may eventually impact the liver, so your pet will have to have routine testing to ensure it’s in the proper range and its liver is still functioning well. some pets can stay on nothing but phenobarb their whole lives. sometimes you may be given diazepam - aka valium - that you can administer rectally to stop seizures. potassium bromide and zonisamide are most commonly used as a secondary anticonvulsant when phenobarb alone isn’t enough. keppra is also good, but less common and more expensive. instead of rectal diazepam, my dog is on intranasal midazolam, which is better to manage her problem with clustering. there are side effects, but they generally improve after a few weeks on the meds. it’s not unusual for pets to have breakthrough seizures even when they’re otherwise well-managed. some may have one seizure every 6 months. my dog clustered for no discernible reason not that long ago, but my vet and i agreed it didn’t warrant a change in meds.

the important thing to remember is that epilepsy is not a death sentence, and it doesn’t have to affect your pet’s quality of life. dogs and cats don’t have our level of awareness; believe it or not, they don’t suffer half as much having the seizure as you do watching it. my dog is as happy and stupid as ever - happier, in fact, because she actually had anxiety until she went on phenobarb. i genuinely believe she’s never been happier, not even compared to the seven years she lived without a single seizure. it’s not a burden to give her medicine twice a day (ALL my dogs’ favorite time of day, because “pill time!” means peanut butter) or always have one ear listening for the sound of her paddling on the floor, it truly isn’t. it’s just another routine, and one that keeps her healthy, happy, and by my side.

Someone else hit my car while it was parked. It was very cut-and-dry. I got a police report, the officer talked to the driver. It states that my car was legally parked and the other driver is at fault. The damage is minor rear bumper damage, nothing too terrible. I filed with his insurance company, and after a lot of frustrating phone tag, an insurance adjuster came out and wrote me an estimate for $450. I had an adjustment for $734 from the local body shop for my make of car, and I showed it to him. I expressed my dissatisfaction with this estimate, and he said the body shop would settle with the insurance company directly for costs in excess of the estimate. $300 is a little much. Since it's minor damage, I think the body shop will probably take the money and do a shoddy job on the car. It's my understanding they are supposed to repair my car to pre-accident conditions. You messed with the wrong college student...

All that follows is my friend`s story, told in my words. I will do my best to answer comments but I do not know everything about the exact story. This story is significantly less morally-grey than the last one.

The whole ordeal began when my friend was a student in a reasonably sized college. We will call my friend Jerry. Jerry was a good student, studying business law. He was also a car enthusiast, and at the time, he had a heavily modded 240SX. The car was worth over $30,000 which was a lot of money for a college student like Jerry.

One day, Jerry was driving down a residential street looking for his at-the-time girlfriend's house when out of nowhere, a massive f150 came ripping up the street at around 45mph (in a 25mph zone). He didn't see Jerry's car, and hit it square in the back. The car was near-totaled, and Jerry was lucky to be alive, having suffered a broken arm and several minor injuries.

Anyways, Jerry hobbles out from the car and dials 911, but even before he starts treating his arm, he snaps about 20 photos of the scene. These become important later. Here, we meet OCM, or over-compensation man. He's 6'2", wears cowboy boots and drives a massive truck. Can't imagine why.

911 responders arrive and Jerry is taken away in an ambulance. OCM was unharmed, save for a few bruises. Unfortunately for Jerry, his car must be immediately towed, as the wreck takes up a good part of a crowded two way residential street. With this, valuable evidence is also lost. OCM's truck is virtually unharmed save for a large dent at the front.

Jerry gets treated for his arm at the university hospital, and this is where the real trouble begins. Jerry realizes he forgot to get the name and insurance of OCM, and OCM actually fled the scene after the ambulance arrived. However, Jerry still has the photos he took, and one of them has the license plates of the f150. With these, he looks them up in the local registry, and finds out they are registered to a contracting business within the area of the university. He looks up the contracting business, and OCM's face greets him on the main screen.

Jerry first tries to deal with OCM civilly, contacting him through his business email and requesting he gives insurance information and pays for the damages. His 240SX is totaled, and it is a great financial loss considering a lot of Jerry's money was invested in the car (not a great strategy, but hey, it's college). OCM essentially says "fuck off" and tries to tell Jerry it was his fault. In fact, OCM has the balls to ask for Jerry's insurance, claiming Jerry was stopped in the middle of the road. This was completely untrue, as Jerry was going maybe 5 under the speed limit while looking for the house. However, Jerry gives OCM his insurance because he is a reasonable guy. Jerry screenshots this too. Anyways, with OCM refusing to give his information, Jerry starts formulating his master plan.

He starts by consulting his mechanic friend, who refers him to a traffic officer. Jerry took so many photos, the traffic officer can safely say that OCM must have been going at least 40mph due to the impact spread and distance the cars slid. While Jerry is talking with the mechanic, he also warns the mechanic not to fix OCM's car. The mechanic is a respected worker at the major chain of body shops in the area, and due to Jerry's long-withstanding relation, the mechanic agrees. Now OCM can't fix his car, and Jerry has reliable evidence. But Jerry isn't finished. He wants OCM to be known as the slimeball he is, trying to cheat out a poor college student on his car.

Jerry is a well-connected man. His friend works in the student newspaper as a journalist, and reports on happenings around campus. Now, this town is very much so a college town, and the major newspaper is student run. Jerry convinces his friend to run an article on the accident, with the headline "local contractor refuses to pay for accident" or something like that. Now Jerry has evidence and public support. Finally, Jerry goes to the yard where they are keeping his car with the mechanic to assess damages. While the car is technically totaled for it's base value, but the mods on the car make it salvageable for its price, coming to a grand total of about $26,000. Meanwhile, OCM had been trying to get his car fixed, but was repeatedly denied entry until he settled on a less-professional, budget body shop.

While Jerry was already planning to take OCM court, OCM had been stupid enough to contact Jerry's insurance about the accident, which had then in turn reached out to OCM's insurance. OCM's insurance said they knew nothing about the accident, meaning he hadn't even reported it to them. This meant OCM had missed his claim recovery, and he now had to pay for the full thing out of pocket.

Jerry took OCM to court the following week, suing for over $50,000 for the car, medical bills and personal damages. His evidence and prepared case made the process rather quick, and OCM lost the case. OCM even tried counter-suing saying it was Jerry's fault, but the accident scene proved otherwise. He then claimed neither of them swapped insurance, but Jerry had the screenshot from earlier. OCM's case was thrown out in fifteen minutes. Besides the court case, news was picking up over OCM, and many local residents were coming out and saying how he conned them, such as over-charging them for materials, hidden fees, etc. A few public complaints were filed and OCM's business caved. Rumor has it OCM was further fined and charged with hit and run after the incident.

Moral of the story: Don't fuck with someone just because you think they're an easy target.

TL;DR Guy tries to screw my friend by not offering his insurance and fleeing scene of an accident. Friend takes pictures, uses connections to bring down guy in life and in court. Guy loses $50,000+ and his business.
