You know how I love offbeat properties and I found this seller's For-Sale-By-Owner ad on Zillow. He started building the home in 1969, in Eureka, California, and it's been under construction for 43 years! It's a French ornamented cathedral Gothic, with all custom ornaments, molds and scaffolding techniques. This mansion is based on Newport, Rhode Island style and spirit from the 19th Century.

And, in 43 yrs., this is what he's done so far. He's asking $4.5M. Now, he has been living in it, so you can live in the finished part. The house is being sold furnished, and what furnishings! Read what he wrote about them below:

Thoughts on Lady Dimitrescu?

OH. LOTS OF EM.....

Ok but beyond general thirst I think she's a VERY interesting character.

She's a violent misandrist with a blood disease that has been mutated by her Cadou, causing her to need to drink blood in order to survive. She's also the adoptive mother of her three daughters who are made of FLIES and they are that way because she cut them open, shoved Cadou's into each of them, kept notes while they were covered in flies, and decided they were hers now. She's 9 ft tall and thinks she's better than everybody (given that she's the first lord you kill...... she's kinda not). She was born in 1914, died and was infected at the age of 44 in the late 1950s, making her about ohhhhhh 133 years old give or take.

I LOVE her. I love how she's clearly not a good person. I love how desperate she is for Mother Mirandas approval only to be snubbed because Heisenberg is the favorite. I love how she cares about her daughters but also uses them more as tools than anything else. When you kill Cassandra she talks about 'How much blood and sweat it took to raise those daughters' and how you have 'Incurred an impossible debt'. I love the COMEDIC degree of her man hating (she calls Ethan MAN-THING for fucks sake). I love how much she hates Heisenberg I love their 'sibling rivalry' in general ('lady supersize bitch' had me CACKLING). I love how she keeps her veneer of sophistication but she genuinely seems happiest when she's in her most monstrous form, flying around and trying to eat you.

She's TERRIBLE and I ADORE her.

Air Placements, Venus-Mars, and Sudden Intimacy

in which we discuss the nature of the air signs and venus-mars dispositions

I’ve always admired the wit of the air signs – their ability to read people; the way they have with words; this social dance they play at, flitting between moments of chaos effortlessly, reaching a hand out to you, yes you. Come along for the ride, won’t you?

There is a bounce to the intellectualism, the calculated movements of an air sign. Signatures of Mercury (ruling Gemini) and Uranus (ruling Aquarius) stain the triad: Hermes’ winged feet carry him far and wide as the pale visage of Uranus throws mist into his path, obscuring who or what he may encounter on his epic journeys. And we cannot forget the graces of Venus, the Roman Aphrodite, ruler of Libra. She brings a love of people and the unusual skill to curate one’s environment, as well as the self within.

Air is a breath of something fresh, and a whiff of it on a love asteroid or two can manifest as quite distinctive, but a Venus-Mars double whammy?

Before we jump into double whammies, let’s talk dispositors. The planetary ruler(s) of a sign feed into any planet in that sign. As an example, say you have an Aries Venus. Aries is ruled by Mars, making your Mars the main dispositor of Venus and any other Aries placement you might have. This would also be true for your Scorpio placements, as Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio.

When Mars disposits into Venus or Venus disposits into Mars or both disposit into each other (disposit is not a word lol), the two planets become connected as if they were aspecting each other, even if they’re not and especially if they are. In my experience, Venus-Mars dispositions layered on top of a close major aspect hit like a punch to the face. 

So where does the air come in?

I’ve experienced two cases of an Aquarius Venus feeding into a Libra Mars. The Mars placement is already an interesting one on its own, with the introduction of Libra’s Venutian love of harmony and justice. The intrigue of a Libra Mars is found in its social mask, as aggression and conflict are pushed away to maintain a fragile veneer of amity. The Aquarian eccentricity of Venus, however, establishes an unevenness: cracks in the mask. 

Aquarius is ruled by two planets, Uranus (modern ruler) and Saturn (traditional ruler), allowing the sign to be read as an attempt to break free from restrictions. Different shapes and stages of Aquarius exist in every chart, and not all are fully matured. The raw, untouched, underdeveloped Aquarius takes on a notable Saturnian coldness, leaning further into the stubborn dogmatism only a fixed air sign could fully bring to the table. This particular Venus signature can weave between shutting out and turning on, and that energy goes straight for Mars if they’re trine. When the Uranian essence does come out – typically quite suddenly, as is the nature of the planet – it can be like someone flipped a switch, and the full aggression of suspended affection is suddenly on top of you, flailing for your attention.

Trade the Aquarius Venus for one marked by Gemini, and the throughline of playfulness runs clear. Mercury-meets-air is a crossroads of tricks and giggles, Hermes delivering his messages alongside good-natured pranks. This can act as a distraction from the Martian mayhem Libra so wants to avoid, but who really cares when you’re having fun? And if these two placements happen to be trine, the diversion will go down especially easy. Expect teasing and maybe even a quick slip into a romantic little vibe, only if the feelings are there.

This doesn’t work quite as smoothly the other way with Mars dispositing into Venus since the Venus placements would be restricted to Mars-ruled signs (Aries, Scorpio), but a mutual disposition is always fun. 

In the event that a chart contained a Libra Mars and Aries Venus in near-perfect opposition, the two planets would be triply tied: Mars would feed into Venus, Venus would feed into Mars, and both would tug desperately at each other from across the chart. Aries Venus brings a spontaneous and magnetic passion, and possible naivete, to a Mars that throws a need for control and prudent self-management right back.

These energies struggle against each other in an attempt to reach one another and yet each informs the other. If the conflict of such a placement goes unresolved, one may doubt themselves in their relationships and along the dual-house axis upon which the opposition lays. Still, there is much potential to be found in the expert mediation of a Libra Mars as applied to the deep attachments formed by an Aries Venus and vice versa, where the unapologetic passions of Venus enable Mars to confront the disputes at hand.

And what if Venus and Mars are conjunct?

When the two planets meet in a sign, they take on the essence of the sign in question, feeding off each other rather than into. Venus-Mars is known for being especially explosive due to the connotation of a union between romantic and sexual love and attraction, but that may not ring true in every sign or house. It’s difficult to sit here and write observations knowing that all charts are so different, right down to the degrees, yet I can say that the concerns of these planets are inextricably linked in such an aspect. It may be in a way that isn’t easily observable to an outsider or has not yet unraveled itself for those whose chart it graces, but there is indeed meaning that deserves to be derived, and it likely exists within the elemental theme.

The concerns of the air signs often tend to have a societal face. Think the humanitarianism of Aquarius or the diplomacy of Libra. Think of Hermes, the Greek counterpart to Mercury; the same Mercury that rules Gemini. The intimacy implied by Venus-Mars could be much more abstract than it first appears. Maybe you’re destined to bring people together by solving conflicts on the streets or in the courts or maybe your purpose is to lighten the very real burden we as humans collectively share. You could be a performer, a socialite, an activist… 

Regardless, this approach to love at the intersection of Venus and Mars is hard to grasp within the bounds of just another astrology observations post, and yet it begs to be observed. It may initially lack the fanfare, the spectacle granted to your cinematic rom-com, but it still manages to reach new heights in epic.

So what exactly happens when Venus meets Mars in an endless sky?

Ive never used amtrak but theres a station nearby, whats the scoop on seat classes?

There are four major classes- economy, business, roommate, and bedroom. The two that are the most interesting are roomette and bedroom because those are the two that aim to create an almost first class experience more in the line of what you might expect from a very fancy European train car. You know the type that you think of when you think of things like the Orient Express, but in an American setting with an American gutted Transit budget. So it's this fascinating combination of cutting corners while still attempting to give the veneer of luxury to justify the cost. Because these things are expensive. They can go for 10 times the price of an economy seat at their largest and can include a dedicated bathroom.

Also, despite containing two beds, the roomette option is less than 7 ft long and less than 3 ft. Wide. It's basically the size of A twin bed. So you actually get A little bit more cramped of a situation than if you and a buddy just wanted to travel in economy, but you do get extra perks like a dedicated attendant, a fully reclinable bed with an admittedly pretty nice mattress and linens, lighting controls and the ability to turn lights off completely except for emergency lights, and most importantly, free meals. I really would like to try traveling this way at some point if only to have access to the dedicated dining car and try some Amtrak fine cuisine.

Going back to bathrooms, some bedrooms have a toilet just in the middle of the cabin. And these things really aren't that large. Which begs the question of what you're supposed to do if you're traveling with mere acquaintances

Today was pretty light. Basically had a study period in AP Literature hidden under a veneer of watching a play. Spoken word presentation has been shunted to Tuesday, which is nice. Gives me a day to work with my teacher. Had a sub for AP Stats and Computer Science, banged out all of the classwork in 30 minutes each.

Vim keybinding learning is going pretty well, still stuck on finding good practice resources to improve my skills at manipulating text. Installed PacVim, which is exactly what it sounds like, and was ass at it. Does anybody know any free practice resources for keybinds?

Robert raises an eyebrow. “Is there a reason I shouldn’t be?”

Daigoroh looks down at the table. “I…you know! Yesterday—and you’re here sitting around instead of out on the slopes. Dad said old people need more rest, but…”

Robert’s eyebrow twitches. “I’m pretty sure he’s older than me. I’m fine, not to worry.”

Why does everyone insist on calling him old? Daigoroh is at least much younger than Falcon, but…come to think of it, Falcon had been joking about Robert not straining himself doing anything like running or stair climbing. Just behind the veneer of poking fun. It doesn’t escape him that he’s comparing Falcon to a literal child, but—a concerned one. One who isn’t very good at hiding it.

“I’d still like to see your work, because you’re very talented,” he continues, because Daigoroh isn’t saying anything. “But if you’d rather not, that’s also fine.”

Wordlessly Daigoroh extends his arm forward again. He stares down at his comm instead of Robert, but keeps it held out.

Robert smiles, tapping his own comm against it. “There. I look forward to seeing your future creations.”

Daigoroh draws back, hand rubbing at the back of his neck. “Probably more interesting than whatever old man games you’re playing on that.”

He can’t decide whether to laugh or sigh. “And just what counts as an ‘old man game’? I’m looking at travel destinations, if you must know. Any recommendations?”

“Amusement park,” Daigoroh says immediately before scrunching his nose up. “No, wait. You’re too old for that. Uh…antique store?”

It’s nice that Daigoroh now feels comfortable enough around him to poke fun at him, but must he? “I’m hardly a fossil, you know. Pick something that someone your father’s age would enjoy.”

Daigoroh puffs up just like he had when showing his art off. “Age isn’t gonna stop dad from anything! But, uh…the beach, maybe? Then you could just lie around in the sun.”

Circular saws aren't just woodcutting tools. When fitted with the proper blade, the saw can also saw through various types of metal, and through masonry such as brick, stone and concrete.

Find the Proper Saw Position

There's no hard-and-fast rule regarding which direction to make the cut, but whenever possible position the saw with its motor facing toward the larger section of board that isn't falling away when cut. That way, the saw's base plate, or shoe, will be fully supported throughout the cut and you won't have to hold up the weight of the saw as the severed piece drops away. Make Easy, Accurate Crosscuts

Making perfectly square crosscuts with a circular saw is easy, if you guide the saw with a layout square (a framing square or Speed Square will work). Hold the saw in place with its blade right on the cut line. Then slide the square against the saw's base plate, and press it tightly against the edge of the board. Check to be sure the blade isn't contacting the board, then squeeze the trigger and allow the saw to reach full speed. Now simply guide the saw along the square to produce a clean, square cut.

Prevent Binding

When cutting sheets of plywood or paneling, it's important to provide the proper support to eliminate dangerous kickback, which can occur if the blade gets pinched in the cut. Place four long 2 x 4s underneath the sheet you're cutting, spacing one 2 x 4 close to each side of the cut line. Then, when you make the cut, both halves of the plywood will be fully supported by two 2 x 4s throughout the cut. When cutting lumber on sawhorses, plan the cut outside the sawhorse pair (not between them). Allow the shorter piece to fall away, while the longer piece stays supported on the horses. Cutting between the horses causes lumber to pinch the blade as it falls through.

Make Precise Rips

A rip cut is simply a cut that runs parallel with the grain of the wood, as opposed to a crosscut, which goes across the wood grain. Most circular saws come with a metal rip guide that attaches to the saw's base plate. This type of guide works, but it's limited to rips of only about 6 in. wide. A better option is to clamp an 8-ft-long board in place for use as a straightedge guide. You could make the guide from a perfectly straight 1 x 8 or 1 x 10, but I prefer a 10- to 12-in.-wide wide rip of 1/2-in. birch plywood. The factory edge of the plywood is always smooth and perfectly straight, making it an ideal saw guide. Mark the cut line on the piece you're ripping, then measure the distance from the saw blade to the edge of the saw's base plate, which, let's say, is 3-1/2 in. Now measure over from the cut line 3-1/2 in. and clamp or screw the straightedge guide in place. As you make the cut, keep the saw's base plate pressed against the straightedge guide. Avoid Wood Splintering

A spinning circular saw blade enters the bottom of the board and exits through the top, and as a result, splintering often occurs on the top surface. Now that's not a concern when cutting wall studs or floor joists, but it is when sawing expensive hardwoods or hardwood-veneer plywood. Here's the solution: Place the board or panel with its best surface facing down. That way, any splintering will occur on the top or back side. When trimming doors down to size, you want to eliminate splintering from both sides. Here's how: Again place the best side face down, meaning the side of the door that will be most visible once it's hung. Then score along the edge of the cut line with a sharp utility knife. Now when you make the cut, the wood fibers will break off cleanly at the scored line, leaving a smooth, splinter-free cut. I recently put this advice into practice when explaining how to build a classic wooden storage bench.

Stack, Clamp and Cut

When you need to cut more than one piece of plywood to the same size, try a technique know as gang cutting. Stack four or five sheets on top of each other, making sure the edges are perfectly aligned. Clamp the pieces, then adjust the saw blade to its maximum depth of cut, and saw through all the sheets at the same time.

Safe Bevel Cutting

All circular saws can be adjusted to make angled bevel cuts up to at least 45 degrees. However, when the base plate is tilted all the way over, the lower blade guard has a tendency to catch on the edge of the board. If this happens, don't force the saw. Instead, release the trigger, raise the blade guard by hand, and then make the cut. Once the blade has cut an inch or so into the wood, you can release the guard.

Gravity-Fed Sawing

At some point, you may need to make a long, straight, vertical cut into a wall, and the circular saw is right the tool to use. Just remember to start the saw at the top of the wall and cut down. That way, gravity will be working in your favor; simply allow the weight of the saw to advance the blade through the cut.
