Hey do you know if there are different situations where you would use "feliz" over "alegre" when describing something as happy? In my textbook they're both just listed as adjectives meaning happy, but is there specific situations for one over the other?

The big difference is feliz is more common in terms of holidays or in certain set phrases:

Feliz cumpleaños = Happy birthday Feliz Navidad = Happy Christmas / Merry Christmas Feliz Nochebuena = Happy Christmas Eve Feliz Año Nuevo = Happy New Year Feliz Nochevieja = Happy New Year's Eve Que sean felices y coman perdices = "And they all lived happily ever after" [lit. "may they be merry and eat partridges"; essentially it's like "may they be happy and wealthy" but it's a common storybook ending, a tiny bit childish because of the rhyme]

You also see it related to felicidades "congratulations" and felicitar "to congratulate". You couldn't use alegre for that here

It's largely synonymous, sometimes it's just one "feels better" than the other. I tend to think of feliz as "happy" or "in a good mood", while alegre I think of as "glad/happy" or "pleasant"

Something about alegre feels more personable, and feliz seems more... about a situation? Something about feliz makes me think of being happy because of something, or wishing someone happiness or good luck

I'm not sure if that makes sense

And then there's contento/a "happy" which to me I think of as tier 1 happiness, like nothing bad's happening, I'm "content". But if something good is happening, I'm feliz or alegre. And alegre feels very happy or "joyful", while feliz feels "pleased (by something)"

But that could be my own interpretation of things

christmas eve is the big event in spain in terms of tradition (and i think in most mediterranean-culture countries), when people gather socially for the christmas eve dinner, called nochebuena (good-night). this is like the biggest dinner of the year and there are a few traditions around it, like carols, etc.

for those who observe christmastide religiously, christmas mass is also celebrated after midnight, though that is only a minoritary part of spanish society today. most people who do go to mass would do so on christmas itself.

socially its christmas eve to christmas night that is festive in terms of night life and outdoors events.

christmas lunch is also somewhat celebrated. for example, if a family has kids, they could do the christmas eve dinner with a part of the family and the christmas lunch with the other. it is very very unusual to eat outside on christmas eve, not so on christmas.

because of this people are rather inconsistent on when to say feliz navidad / merry christmas, but the closer you are to midnight during christmas eve the more likely you hear it. even after christmas, 'feliz navidad' is a common greeting for all the holiday period that spans three weeks (christmas, new years, and reyes magos week)

pls remember "christianity" isn't a single culture! not every country engages with christian legacy the same way. most notions i see of christmas here are just american or culturally anglo-protestant.

Jewish culture is forgetting EVERY YEAR that Christmas starts not on the 24th, but the 25th.

I always interpret "Christmas Eve" as "Erev Christmas" and therefore the start of the holiday at sundown, but noooooo. It's just the day before, and everything is business as usual.

Home For Navidad

This is one of the oldest fanfiction ideas I had in mind and I finally wrote it. This is extremely short, so I thought I could share it directly on Tumblr. You can also read it on AO3 and Wattpad. Anyway, I hope you like it!

The light sparkling snowflakes were swirling in the air, slowly falling on the ground and forming a dense snow cover. It was Nochebuena, the time when the city streets were brightly decorated and illuminated with candles. When the sounds of the carols and children's laughter spread across the whole kingdom, helping people enjoy the festive atmosphere even more. Navidad is a special day of the year when every family in Avalor can share the warmth of love with each other and spend the priceless time together. However, not everyone could feel that same way on the day before Navidad. 

Blanca Nuñez was standing behind the counter at the bakery "Nuñez and Son" and kneading the dough, sprinkling it with the flour for the Navidad buñuelos. Every few minutes she raised her head from the worktop and pointed her gaze towards the front door, hoping to hear the bell ringing, meaning that the somebody she was waiting for would finally arrive. She flinched when the door was finally opened and a slight smile appeared on her face. She dusted the flour off her hands on her apron and was about to approach the door, but when she saw who it was, she stayed in place with a disappointed sigh. 

"Good day, Señora Nuñez!" A man covered with snow from his head to his toes came into the bakery and approached the counter. "There is such unbelievable weather today, right? It's snowing in Avalor! Can you imagine that!" 

Blanca forced a smile and nodded. "Yes, you're right." She said, "What would you like, Señor Martinez?" 

"Anything warm would be handy!" He chuckled. "Your empanadas work perfectly." 

Blanca handed a few packed baked goods to the man and said: "Thank you for coming. I hope you will like it." 

"I sure will!" Señor Martinez exclaimed. "¡Feliz Navidad! I hope you're having a fun day with your family!" 

He headed to the exit door and as soon as he left the bakery, the welcoming smile vanished from Blanca's face and she got back to her work. She was rolling out the dough on the table, and suddenly memories flashed through her mind and she saw a little boy six years old. Her son Gabriel. He was carefully pouring flour into the bowl, and mixing it with water to knead the dough. The boy was struggling with that, but soon, he felt the warm and gentle touch of somebody's hands. He raised his head, and upon looking at his mother's kind face, he smiled and giggled, returning to the work with a greater enthusiasm.

As they were cooking together, the kitchen was filled with ringing laughter and Gabriel with his hands covered with flour peeked at his mother. She was slowly removing the dough from the bowl to the table to start rolling it out, but before she could even take the rolling pin in her hand, the tip of her nose was in the flour. She turned her gaze at giggling Gabriel, but his laughter quickly quieted down when Blanca touched his nose. He opened his eyes and saw his mother, covering her mouth with her hand. He snuggled up to her, and Blanca wrapped her arms around him, stroking his hair and hearing Gabriel's voice: "I love you, mami." 

"I love you, too, mijo…" Blanca whispered, slowly running the rolling pin over the dough, as she still was captured by those memories. 

A few hours passed by, and soon, Blanca approached the door, flipping the sign from "open" to "closed". She took her seat at the table to have dinner, but couldn't, as the only thing on her mind was whether Gabriel was safe during his guard mission now. However, her thoughts were interrupted soon, as the door to the bakery opened, and she saw Roberto who had just returned from the market on the threshold. She got up from the table to greet her husband and help him to take the bags to the cellar. 

"I'm sorry I'm so late." Roberto said, as he kept dusting snow off his clothes. "Everything was fine on the way to the market, but then, there was such a strong snow storm. Snow . I still can't believe it." 

"That's okay. The main thing is that you're safe." Blanca replied, and they headed to the kitchen. 

Blanca put a mug of Ponche Navideño in front of Roberto to keep him warm and took her seat. Roberto was about to pick it up, but stopped when he looked at Blanca who was just sitting at the table, thoughtful and worried. "Blanca, did something happen?" She shook her head, and Roberto looked around. "Hasn't Gabriel returned yet?" He asked. 

Blanca shook her head again. "And I don't know when he will. I don't know if he will at all." A slow tear rolled down her cheek, and she swiftly wiped it away. "I've been thinking about him for the whole day, Roberto, and I'm so scared that something might happen to him." 

Roberto took her hand. "Blanca…" He said. "Do you remember how Gabriel saved princess Isabel and princess Caterina during the Peace Festival?" Blanca raised her head. "He was ready to risk his life without a second thought to protect them, and that's when I could see something in him that I had never noticed before. He's a true hero. And now, when he's on his guard mission, he's doing it to protect his kingdom. And us." Roberto squeezed her hand tightly yet gently and continued: "I'm worried about him. A lot. But I don't doubt he will be back. And I know that when he's back, we'll be proud of him even more than we are now." 

Blanca smiled slightly, thanking him for those words with a glance, and placed her hand over his. Roberto was looking at her fondly and suddenly turned his gaze towards the window. He got up from the table to see what was happening outside and saw the clouds clear away to reveal an orange sky. The storm was over. Blanca approached the window and snuggled up to Roberto, resting her head on his shoulder, and together they watched the sunset, awaiting their son's arrival whenever it would happen.

The sparkling flames were illuminating the dark cave and warming up the guards and jaquins who were in the midst of the snow storm. Gabe was looking at Miguel and Andres and handed them a few more crackers from his backpack to pass the waiting time and cheer them up on Nochebuena. 

It was Gabe's first Navidad he spent far away from his family, which was making him feel a bit empty and lonely inside. He couldn't stop thinking that his parents and friends might be worried about him, but watching Miguel and Andres reminded him what he left Avalor for, and the thoughts about people he loved and his kingdom were a true source of strength for him, especially now. 

Gabe smiled, taking a canteen of water into his hand, and suddenly heard Migs' voice behind his back. "Captain Nuñez! The storm is over!" 

Gabe turned his head to Miguel and Andres, not believing his ears at first, and got up from the ground, heading out of the cave. Looking around, he sighed with relief and ordered the immediate resumption of their mission. The jaquins flapped their wings, soaring into the sky, and Gabe glanced at every member of his troop with a soft peaceful smile.

This week’s progress (one day late)

12/23/12-12/30/17

Weight: 166.0 lbs

Intake: Around 1500 calories per day, except Christmas eve and Christmas. I’d guess 3-4000 calories each of those days.

Exercise: I walked 11.75 miles, ran 2.5 miles, and rock climbed for 1 hour. I skipped 2 days of working out because I’ve been feeling lazy.

Thoughts: I should start working out again, but I’m the laziest when it’s snowy and cold, and I was hoping I could lose weight without it or with less of it. The morning of Christmas eve, I weighed 165.6 lbs, and the morning of the day after Christmas I weighed 172.6 lbs, so only gaining .6 lbs this week is actually something I’m really happy about. It seems like the Christmas weight gain (6 lbs) mostly went away within a few days of lower salt, healthy eating. Also, I need to be drinking more water.

Consumo: Aproximatamente 1.500 calorías a diario, excepto por la Nochebuena y la Navidad. Yo conjeturaría 3.000-4.000 calorías por los ambos días.

Ejercicio: Caminé 11.75 millas, corré 2.5 millas, y escalé rocas por una hora. No hice ejercicio 2 días porque me estaba sentiendo perezosa.

Pensamientos: Debo empezar a hacer ejercicio de nuevo, pero estoy la más perezosa cuando está nublado y frío, y tenía esperanza que pueda perder peso sin ejercicio o con menos ejercicio. Por la mañana de la Nochebuena, pesé 165.6 libras, y por la mañana del día después de la Navidad, pesé 172.6 libras, así en realidad estoy muy feliz porque solo he ganado .6 libras esta semana. Me parece que el aumento de peso de la Navidad (6 libras) se fue por lo mayoría entre unos cuantos días de comer menos sal y comidas saludables. Además, tengo que beber más agua.

How does one say "Happy Memorial Day" in Spanish? What is the Spanish equivalents for belated and early in terms of holidays? For example, happy belated birthday or happy early mother's/father's day!? In fact, what are all Spanish equivalents to all the holidays we celebrate/observe in the States?

I think it would be Feliz Día de los Caídos “Happy [Day of the Fallen]”

You’d have to look up each country’s specific holidays since some of them are regional, particularly each country has its own independence days or things like that.

The big ones are probably:

la Nochevieja = New Year’s Eve

el Año Nuevo = New Year’s

el Día de los Reyes Magos = Three Kings’ Day / The Epiphany

la Navidad = Christmas

la Nochebuena = Christmas Eve

la Pascua / la Pascua de Resurreción = Easter*

el Día de la Madre = Mother’s Day

el Día del Padre = Father’s Day

el Día de San Valentín = Valentine’s Day

la Pascua Judía / el Pésaj = Passover

la Semana Santa = Holy Week

el Domingo de Ramos = Palm Sunday

la Cuaresma = Lent

el Día del Trabajador / el Día del Trabajo = Labor Day

el Día del Árbol = Arbor Day

*In some countries la Pascua or las Pascuas refers to Christmas as well. Generally, la Pascua refers to any Jesus-centric religious holiday. But to make it clear, sometimes you see la Navidad “Christmas” and then la Pascua de Resurección “Easter” though it specifically has to do with “resurrection”

Also note that Spain and Latin America both celebrate Three Kings’ Day which is sometimes known as la Pascua de los Reyes 

Some countries celebrate Carnaval which is basically Mardi Gras, and others don’t so much.

Some countries have Constitution Day.

Spain’s Día de la Hispanidad also coincides with many other countries’ Día de la Raza or it gets translated as “Cultural Diversity Day”, “Discovery of America”, “Indigenous Resistance Day” or something along those lines. It’s all close to the idea of Columbus Day, but in Spanish-speaking countries is more focused on celebrating the Spanish-speaking world as a whole, or focusing on Indigenous people and diversity rather than Columbus.

Other holidays like el Halloween aren’t celebrated totally. Halloween is understood as more of a US tradition rather than anything else. But it is widely known because of American media, and in some places people do dress up and go trick or treating for candy. But Carnaval is the big dress up holiday week for most.

Many countries do have a Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos in terms of celebrating the dead or a kind of holiday relating to honoring the dead.

And many Spanish-speaking countries follow religious holidays as well, typically Catholic holidays above all, such as Immaculate Conception, Assumption, All Souls, and other important holidays like that.

The Hispanic community and diaspora also typically have their own translations for holidays in other countries; Canada and the US both have a “Thanksgiving” but celebrated at different times of the year, and citizens or residents would typically celebrate it or a version of it to follow local customs.

As far as “early” and “belated” it would typically be:

¡Feliz cumpleaños atrasado! = Happy belated birthday!

Sometimes for “late” or “belated” you might see tardío “belated” or con retraso “delayed”

Notes: All months and days of the week are considered masculine, and are never written with capital letters except if the entire word is in capital letters or it’s a proper name like Santo Domingo [which is either “Santo Domingo” the city, or “Holy Sunday”] or Miércoles de Ceniza “Ash Wednesday”

Additionally, all days of the week stay in their singular form, except for sábado “Saturday” and domingo “Sunday” which do change... So for example... los lunes, los martes, los miércoles, los jueves, los viernes, los sábados, los domingos

Most days of the week already end in an -S, so they stay “singular” in form but plural in the definite article so that you don’t have to add an additional -es to them. The days that do change for plural end in -O.

Additionally, you NEVER say en + day of the week to mean “on”... For that you use just use el or los... or sometimes para (though this depends on the context).

Los lunes tengo clase. = On Mondays I have class. Tengo clase los lunes. = I have class on Mondays.

Para el lunes tengo que escribir un ensayo. = For Monday I have to write an essay. / On Monday an essay I have to write is due. Es para el lunes. = It’s on Monday. / It happens on Monday. / It’s due on Monday. La cita fue programada para el lunes. = The appointment was scheduled/planned for/on Monday.

Months can be singular or plural since they all end in -O, -E, or a consonant that isn’t -S... los eneros, los febreros, los marzos, los abriles etc.

For the most part, you don’t need to worry about this because most of the numbers are the same. The difference being 1 year old, 21 years old, 31 years old... any age that ends in a 1 [that isn’t once “11″] because they’ll be counted as un or -ún ...because countable.

Similarly to un año being “a year”, the un here means “one” since you’re counting the years. That’s what it means to be “countable” in this case.

Tiene un año. = He/She is one (year old).

Tiene veintiún (21) años. = He/She is 21 (years old).

Tiene treinta y un (31) años. = He/She is 31 (years old).

Tiene ciento un (101) años. = He/She is 101 (years old).

(Note: When using dates, you use the number + the month. The number you use is almost always the cardinal number... el dos de octubre “October 2nd / 2 October”, el treinta de abril “April 30th”)

A regular holiday (bank holiday) or day off is often known as feriado, and if you're British "going on holiday" is ir(se)/estar de vacaciones which for the US is "to go/be on vacation"]

I also need to point out that one important word not listed is las Pascuas. This is different from la Pascua meaning "Easter"... las Pascuas is used to describe all of the Christmas holidays which go from the end of December to the beginning of January. The most important ones for Spanish-speakers are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and then the Epiphany on January 5th-6th which is often called  "Three Kings' Day" or "Three Wisemen's Day".Three Kings' Day doesn't really exist for people outside of Spanish-speaking countries (that I know of), but it's a little bit like a second Christmas. You get presents, you leave food out for the Kings (and their camels), there's a specific cake... I don't think I can really do it justice just talking about it. So without further ado, here comes the list!
