Book Two: Sapphire (Ignis x Reader) Chapter III

The next morning, Gladio dragged Noctis out of bed so they could leave. Ignis finished dressing himself and looked around the motel room. He couldn't find Prompto or (Y/n). Having no doubt the boy had taken the spirit again, he walked out of the room. Scanning the area, he immediately found the two. What shocked him was Prompto's position. He was laying down on the ground on his stomach, his legs swinging back and forth. His camera was trained on the skvader as she laid down on the ground.

"C'mon, work with me here, (Y/n)!" Prompto begged. "How about you hide behind the motel and transform? And when you're ready, you can call me."

The spirit yawned, her nose wiggling slightly. She flopped down on her side with a faint grunt. Lowering his camera, Prompto nibbled on his bottom lip. "Okay, that was really adorable, but not what I was looking for."

"Prompto," Ignis called out, stepping off the porch of the motel. "You'll soil your clothes laying on the ground in such a manner."

"Aaand Mama Ignis has appeared," he sighed. Pushing himself off the ground, he held his camera close to his chest. "Morning to you too, Iggy."

(Y/n) shot up at hearing his name. She dashed over to the advisor and climbed up his body until she was situated on his left shoulder. She threw her long tail around his shoulders, nuzzling her body against the side of his neck. Once she was comfortable, she flopped down and allowed her hind legs to dangle from his shoulder.

Just then, Gladio and Noctis exit the motel room. Ignis glances at his other companions before deciding it was time to leave. "Let's see ourselves to Galdin, shall we?"

"Might as well," Noctis mumbled tiredly.

The group climbs into the Regalia and departs from Longwythe Rest Area. (Y/n) remained on Ignis' shoulder as he drove, enjoying the sensation of the wind blowing through her fur. She looked around as they passed through a ravine of sorts as the radio came to life. The station was broadcasting the news of the upcoming wedding between Noctis and Lunafreya. She could hear Gladio teasing the prince slightly when the broadcast ended, but tuned them out and continued to enjoy the scenery. It was her first time outside of the Crown City and she wanted to enjoy every second of it.

When Galdin Quay came into view from the highway, Prompto stood up in his seat in excitement. "Hey! I see the sea!"

"I "sea" it too," Noctis replied, eyes focused on the clear waters of the ocean.

"That's Galdin Quay," Ignis informed the group.

"Kinda wanna go for a dip," Gladio commented.

Noctis noticed the strange rock formation in the distance. "That a big mountain behind it?"

"No, it's an island," the strategist answered.

"Nobody goes to Galdin for an island, though," Prompto stated. "They go to kick back and get massages!"

"And savor the seafood. It's famously delicious."

"Sounds great," Noctis said.

"Somethin' to look forward to," the shield claimed.

(Y/n) couldn't tear her gaze away from the beautiful beaches of Galdin Quay. The water was clear and the sand was pure white. She already knew what she wanted to do, even though it would risk revealing her human form to Noctis, Gladio, and Prompto. She was going to relax on the beach and nothing was going to get in her way, not even Ignis.

Arriving at Galdin Quay, Ignis backed the Regalia up into a parking spot located by the gas pump. Everyone exited the vehicle and headed towards the Mother of Pearl. Walking across the lengthy boardwalk, they reach the entrance of the restaurant/hotel. A member of the staff greeted them, bowing politely with a hand over his chest. Their destination was the docks, which were located in the back.

They didn't make it far before two men approached them. The taller one had unkempt hair and was cladded in multiple layers of dark clothing. The other man had spiky black locks and wore a faded green jacket with a black t-shirt underneath. Below the waist he wore matching combat pants and black boots. Around his neck swayed the dog tags of what appeared to be his identification as a hunter.

The auburn-haired man was the first to speak. "I'm afraid you're out of luck."

"Are we?" Noctis asked, slightly bothered by the men's presences. He wanted them gone as soon as possible and he had no idea why.

"The boats bring you here."

"What about 'em?" Prompto wondered.

"You're not leaving anytime soon," the spiky-haired man answered. "Better get comfortable."

Gladio crosses his arms, glancing between the two strangers. "And what're your stories?"

"We're impatient travelers, ready to turn ship. The ceasefire's getting us nowhere," the auburn-haired man replied. He then gestures to his companion, who tosses a coin at Noctis.

Gladio snatches it out of the air before it can hit the prince. He examined the coin before looking back up at the strange men. "What's this? Some sort of souvenir?"

Prompto saw the coin and gaped. "They make those?"

Noctis also saw the coin and shook his head. "What? No."

"Consider it your allowance," the taller gentleman remarked with a small, unsettling smile.

"Yeah, and who's allowing us?" The shield scoffed.

He bowed slightly. "Men of no consequences." He then patted his companion on the shoulder. "Come, dear friend. Let us set off."

The spiky-haired man stood still as if her feet were nailed to the floor. He didn't budge as his emerald eyes dwelled on the skvader resting on Ignis' shoulder. Her sapphire eyes locked with his, earning a smirk from the stranger before turning to follow his friend.

"Yeah, right," Noctis sneered under his breath.

Prompto fiddled with his fingers in wonderment. "You believe what those guys said about the port being closed?"

"I'm skeptical, though I won't discount the possibility," Ignis replied.

"I say we go check it out for ourselves," Gladio said.

Walking through the Mother of Pearl, they pass by numerous of people who were enjoying what Galdin Quay had to offer. (Y/n) jumped off the strategist's shoulder and flew to the docks ahead of the boys. She sat near the edge of the docks and gazed out across the ocean. There were no boats in sight.

When she turned around, her eyes landed on a well-dressed young man who was sitting on one of the benches with his legs crossed. She realized he was staring at her with a wide-eyed expression. Carefully approaching him, she sat down a few inches from him. Her tail swished behind her as she squeaked at him, startling him.

The young man, having never met a guardian before, leant down and outstretched his hand to pet her. He was hesitant, but he pushed his fear aside when she stood up on her hind legs and nudged her head against his hand. "Well, aren't yous a friendly one."

(Y/n) looked away from the man when she heard Prompto groan out, "Aw, man. Not a ship in sight. What gives?"

The guardian turned around to see the boys were searching the docks for boats. The young man who was petting her stopped and addressed her companions. "According to my sources, the empire, giving strict orders not to let any vessels leave the docks of Altissia. Real shame if you were late to your own wedding-right, Prince Noctis? Name's Dino, by the way. Pleasure. The crown prince of Lucis, bounty hunting in his fancy car... Surely you didn't think it'd go unnoticed-at least not by this reporter? Lucky for you, this reporter has integrity. If you wanna remain incognito, I'll respect your wish...in exchange for a favor."

Noctis glared at him and kept himself from lashing out in anger at the man's threat. "What do you want?"

"Hey, I knew you'd come around!" Dino cheered. "Lemme see your map."

Reluctantly, the prince hands over the map. Dino pulls out a pen from his pocket and circles an area on the map. Putting the pen away, he handed the map back to Noctis. "Marked where you need to go on your map. All you gotta do is find me some rough gemstones-like this one. Do this, and your ship'll come in. Don't, and the papers'll run you outta town. Capisce?"

(Y/n) stared Dino down as the boys walked away. She didn't blink, which frightened him slightly. Although he was trying to hide his emotions behind a mask, she could tell from his silver gaze he would never truly blow Noctis' cover.

Satisfied with her analysis, she let out a final squeak before flying off to rejoin the others. She caught up with them just as they were stepping off the boardwalk. She wound up crash-landing on Noctis' head. She hung limply from his head with a faint huff. The prince tensed slightly when she collided with his head, but this wasn't the first time she's done so. He grabbed her small body and held her at eye level a few inches from his face. "Don't think I didn't see you with that reporter. You on his side now?"

Outstretching her front paws, (Y/n) made sure her sable claws were retracted before placing her paws on Noctis' cheeks. She squeaked, tapping her soft paws against his face lightly. A smile blossomed on the prince's face. He couldn't help but find her actions adorable. "Yeah, I know you would never betray us. You and Specs are attached at the hip."

The skvader climbed across Noctis' arm the moment he released her. She perched herself on his shoulder as he entered the backseat of the Regalia. Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto followed suit and it wasn't long before they left Galdin Quay to find what Dino requested.

Not far down the road, Ignis pulled the car over to the shoulder and parked. Everyone stepped out of the vehicle and followed Noctis up a stony path. They crossed over a rocky overhang that spanned across the road below. The prince, along with (Y/n) who was still on his shoulder, carefully examined the map before putting it away.

Eventually, they reach an outcrop where they find an enormous bird slumbering. It ruffled its feathers in its sleep, burying its beak against its puffed out chest. Prompto gasped at the sight of the immense beast. "Oh em gee. We're supposed to get near that thing?"

"Pipe down before you wake it up," Gladio hissed just above a whisper.

Crouching, Noctis took the lead and carefully maneuvered around the bird. The others were close behind him, eyes focused on the creature as they held their breath. (Y/n) flattened her small form against the prince's shoulder as they circled around the front of the bird. She could sense just how powerful it was due to its size alone.

Successfully making it past the zu, Noctis stalked over towards a mineral deposit. He grabbed one of the loose pieces of garnet stone and put it into his pocket. He glanced at (Y/n) from the corner of his eye once receiving a soft squeak in response to being able to find and secure what Dino wanted. "Better get it back to him," he whispered to her. She nodded her head in response.

Turning around, Noctis proceeded back the way they came. Ignis was by his side as they rounded around the zu. Unfortunately, the large bird was awoken by a seemingly unknown force. It unfurls its wings, flapping them as hard as it could and creating a powerful gust of wind. (Y/n) dug her claws into Noctis' jacket in a desperate attempt to keep herself from being blown away. Morosely, it wasn't enough. Her small body was sent sailing through the air as the zu took off.

Luckily, Ignis was close by and saw what happened. He snatched her body out of the air and held her close. He loosened his grip on her after the wind died down and the bird was out of sight. "Off it goes..."

Noctis inhaled deeply to calm his racing heart. "Oh, we made it out alive."

"Barely. I seriously thought we were at journey's end," Prompto whimpered.

"But that feat was fit for a king," Gladio commented.

"We've acquired what we came for. Time to return to Galdin," the advisor said. He released (Y/n) and watched her fly around without the fear of being blown away. She went ahead of the boys and returned to the Regalia.

Prompto had also been watching her until she vanished from sight. "You're not scared she'll fly off and never return, Iggy?"

"Not in the slightest," the tactician answered without hesitation. "The bond we share is unquestionable."

"In other words, you both like each other so much you stick together," Gladio smirked with a chuckle.

""Like" is not a plausible word to describe the bond between (Y/n) and I," Ignis corrected the shield. "What we share is far beyond "like"."

"Just saying how I see it."

The advisor's eyes narrowed at him. He wanted to question him, but he walked off before he could. With a sigh, he shook his head and followed after his friends.

During the car ride back to Galdin Quay, (Y/n) was in the backseat with Noctis and Gladio. Descending the windy road leading to their destination, she shoved her head into the prince's pocket, startling him. "H-Hey, (Y/n)!" Looking down, he saw her head pop out of his pocket with the fragment of garnet in her mouth. He wondered what she was going to do with it until he watched her fly out of the car and towards Galdin Quay. "Someone's impatient..."

The skvader was indeed impatient. She was eager to relax on the beach and that would only happen as soon as she could sneak away from the group and transform. She thought delivering the garnet to Dino herself would speed up the process. Why? She wasn't exactly sure.

Landing on the bench beside Dino, she placed the stone down and nudged it towards him with her nose. He picked it up, examining it closely to ensure it was what he asked for. A mix between a smirk and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Would yous look at that? Just what I asked for!" He immediately got to work creating his newest piece of jewelry. (Y/n) watched in amazement as he turned the small stone into a beautiful bracelet with what supplies he had with him. Once he was done, he admired his craftsmanship. "Gotta say, this is my best piece so far."

Just then, the boys arrived. Dino reveals his newest creation to them and handed it to Noctis. "Nice work, kid! Sorry for giving you such a hard time. I just had to get my hands on this, even if it meant blackmail. You understand, don't ya? Y'see, I'm a reporter by day, and an amateur jeweler by night. This elusive little beauty's gonna become a masterpiece. To make it up to you, I'll share a little scoop. That special coin you got-it commemorates the Oracle's ascension. That guy was tossing 'em out to everyone. Musta picked 'em up back in Niflheim. And speaking of freebies, here's one from me. Come back if you wanna buy more!"

Ignis eyed the fine piece of jewelry as Noctis accepted it from Dino. "I doubt a souvenir like that could make its way into the hands of an ordinary citizen."

"Well, it's our pocket change now," Prompto commented.

"As promised, I'm in the process of securing your ferry tickets right now. Told ya, I'm a man of integrity. Should be smooth sailing from here, so lemme know when you're ready to ship out," Dino stated.

The prince crossed his arms. "We've been ready."

"Guess I should've expected that," the reporter cackled. "The ship won't arrive 'til tomorrow! How 'bout you find a place to spend the night?"

Prompto glanced around at his friends. "Do we even have the money to spend the night?"

"We could always go camping instead," the brute spoke up.

"We do have the funds to secure a hotel room. Although, it will be the only one for a while until we procure more funds," Ignis explained.

"No way I'm camping if we can afford a hotel room," Noctis said. "You guys go do that. I'm gonna do some fishing."

"Can't let His Highness go alone," Gladio stated. "I'll go with you."

"Me too!" Prompto waves his hand in the air. "I wanna take pictures of the beach!"

"Then (Y/n) and I shall make arrangements," the advisor informed the others. Noctis, Gladio, and Prompto left the docks to head to the beach. Ignis and (Y/n) headed towards the rooms available inside the restaurant and paid 10,000 gil for one. They entered the large, beautiful room where the spirit changed forms. She sat on the edge of the bed for a few seconds before flopping down on her back. Her (h/c) locks fanned out across the sheets as she stared up at the ceiling.

"Feeling enervated?" Ignis questioned as he had been watching her.

"A little," she confessed. "Sleeping has been difficult to do ever since we left the city. Even napping is difficult."

"Something plagues your mind?" He inquired.

"Nothing like that, but..." The sapphire-eyed girl sat up. She placed her hands in her lap, staring at the floor. "I hear a voice in my sleep, and even sometimes when I'm awake. I've tried to push it aside as nothing, but something tells me I need to listen. Maybe I'm finally going crazy."

"Shall we investigate this voice?"

She shook her head. "No, don't worry about it." Standing up, she walked over to the windows, which made up one entire wall of the room. She admired the beautiful, glistening ocean for some time. She then focused on her reflection in the window. Alongside herself, she saw Ignis sitting down in one of the chairs. He was flipping through the book that held all his recipes. With a huff, she spun around. Her heels clacked against the floor as she walked towards the door.

Ignis looked up the moment she strolled past him. Looking over his shoulder, he called out to her. "(Y/n), where are you heading?"

"The beach. I've been dying to relax ever since we first came here. It'll also help me sort out my thoughts," the guardian replied.

"What of the others?"

"They won't know it's me." She opened the door. "I'll be back soon, Iggy."

Stepping out of the room, she closed the door behind her. Walking through the Mother of Pearl, she could already feel eyes on her as she sauntered by many people. She tried her best to ignore the stares, knowing not many people have seen a guardian due to their scarcity. She clamped a hand over the sapphire gemstone embedded in her chest. She held her breath and sped up her pace so she could reach the exit quicker.

(Y/n) exhaled heavily. She dropped her hand from her chest the moment she was walking across the long boardwalk. She thought she was in the clear, but her eyes widened when she saw Noctis, Gladio, and Prompto were already on their way back. She thought they would've been gone longer. Pushing her thoughts aside, she looked away from them and prayed to the Astrals they would simply stroll past her. However, her prayer went unanswered. The moment her eyes locked with Prompto's, her body tensed. She immediately looked away and continued walking. As she walked past the blonde, she did force herself to look back at him and offer a kind, shy smile.

What she didn't see was Prompto's wide-eyed expression. His jaw was unhinged, hanging in disbelief. He nearly dropped his camera because of the shock he was in. Gladio also took notice of (Y/n), not recognizing who she was. He crossed his arms with a smirk as his eyes watched her head to the beach. "Now there's a woman."

Wondering who his friends were staring at, Noctis looked at the guardian. Just by looking at her, he could feel a sense of familiarity but pushed it aside since he didn't recognize her. He looked away and saw Prompto and Gladio still had their eyes focused on her. "Why're you guys staring?"

"Dude, are you seriously that blind?" Prompto gasped. "We just came across another goddess! That's two in two days!"

"If you're so interested, go talk to her."

"M-Me?"

Gladio smacked him on the back. "Go for it, pipsqueak. If you fail, I'll take over."

"I'll try...."

Meanwhile on the beach, (Y/n) took her heels off and walked across the sand. She didn't mind the sand sticking to the bottom of her tights since she could easily brush it off later. She admired the lapping waves and the various fish swimming around. The salty breeze blew through her (h/c) locks, a sensation she came to enjoy. Even the sun's warmth against her skin felt different. She wasn't sure what it was about the beach that made the sensation different from anywhere else.

A few peaceful minutes ticked by before (Y/n)'s attention was drawn by a small 'click' and a flash. Looking to her left, she saw Prompto with his camera raised. Her eyes widened in surprise at seeing him. She could even see the faint blush on his cheeks, not sure if it was from the sun or embarrassment.

"I-I'm so sorry!" He quickly apologized. "I-I should've asked before taking your picture."

The guardian smiled, desperately trying to suppress her shyness. Morosely, she wasn't successful. "I-It's okay. Is, um...is there something I can help you with?"

The boy shook his head. "N-No, I just thought y-you were really beautiful and it's my job a-as a photographer to capture everything beautiful."

Her smile widened at his pure heart. "That's very sweet of you."

Prompto quickly looked away, his blush deepening. "S-Sorry to bother you."

Before she could reply, he stormed off. She watched him run all the way to the Mother of Pearl, blinking in surprise at how fast he was sprinting. She hadn't expected Prompto to say such a kind, sweet thing to her. Now it was going to be awkward when she would introduce herself to him and the others in the near future.

Sighing, she combed her slightly disheveled hair behind her ears. She closed her eyes for a few minutes, listening to the waves as they lapped against the white sand of the beach. Just like before, her blissful moment was cut short when sensing the presence of another. This time, she was all-too-familiar with the presence and knew who it was before even looking. "Come to join me, Iggy?" Turning her head, she met his emerald gaze. Unlike with Prompto, she didn't stutter. Ignis was the only person she wasn't shy around because of how long they'd been together.

"I have," the strategist answered. "Although under false pretenses."

(Y/n) looked off in the distance and saw Noctis, Prompto, and Gladio watching them closely from the parking lot. They were trying to hide themselves behind one of the vehicles parked. "Oh, no... Is this their plan?"

"More of Gladio's than Noct's or Prompto's."

She placed her heels in the sand. "Is this another bet to see if you can get a woman?" It wouldn't have been the first time the boys had forced Ignis to speak to a woman to see if he did have any charm.

He pinched in the bridge of his nose. "Indeed..."

(Y/n) reminisced in the many memories she's made with him. "Now that I think about it, you never did bring home anyone. I know you're really serious about your dedication to Noctis, but that doesn't mean you don't have time for your own life. Your happiness matters, too."

Ignis casted his gaze to the ocean. He already knew why he hadn't brought home anyone, not even during his high school years. While he had been occupied with juggling school and his duties to the Crown, he always found time for himself in order to keep his sanity in check. Unlike many people his age who were bringing home a special someone, he didn't have to go search for someone who captured his heart. The young woman beside him already captivated his heart without her knowing. He'd been infatuated with her for many years now, but he kept his true feelings bottled up. He was frightened she wouldn't want him in return and even if she did, he was worried he couldn't commit himself fully to the relationship being the advisor of the prince. He didn't want her to feel as if she came second because of his duties.

What Ignis didn't know was that she already felt second in his heart. Ever since formally becoming Noctis' advisor, she was no longer first in his world. She was placed on the back-burner, knowing her life wasn't as important as Noctis'. In her mind, she was disposable. The prince wasn't. Just like Ignis, (Y/n) kept her deepest emotions buried in the darkest corner of her heart. She admired his conviction to his position, not angered in the slightest when she was no longer the most important person to him.

"Ignis?" The guardian gently called out his name after a prolonged silence.

The advisor reconnected his gaze with hers. "Yes?"

"You will find your own happiness, won't you?"

"I will in due time. As should you, (Y/n)."

She didn't care about her own happiness, only his. Faking a convincing smile, she nodded. "I'm sure I will find that special someone soon." It was a bitter lie on her tongue. She clutched the hem of her dress, bunching up the fabric before releasing it. Bending down, she grabbed her heels. Her eyes drifted over to the other boys, smirking slightly when seeing their flabbergasted expressions. "I think we can safely assume you win this bet. Make sure Gladio pays his dues. I'll see you back in the hotel room." She went to walk past him, but stopped. She decided to add a little spice to the mix and kissed him on the cheek. With a prideful smirk, she glanced one last time towards the trio hiding behind a car. "That'll give them something to talk about."

Ignis watched (Y/n) as she slipped on her heels and left the beach. He placed a hand on his hip, remembering how soft her lips were against his cheek. She'd kiss him like that many times before, but this time it felt different. He wasn't sure why, though. From where he stood on the beach, he could hear Prompto's wails of disbelief. He could hear him complaining about how he was able to score a kiss on a cheek from the girl before she left. His own smirk tugged at the corners of his lips, but it never came to fruition. (Y/n) truly did stir up the pot with such a simple action. Now, he would have to spin a tale to prevent the others from figuring out who she truly was.

Hi again, just a friendly reminder for you about Disco Elysium. I played it myself 2 weeks ago and I thought it was a wonderful game, looking forward to hear your opinion.

Here’s the weekend reminder about disco elysium: at some point I’d like to hear your thoughts about Kim and the deserter, but I’m sure you have a lot of first thoughts about the game’s narrative and styles at large and the overall themes ?

Yep, I’ve got many thoughts on Disco Elysium. Overall, I found it an incredibly enjoyable throwback to the classic role-playing games of the old Infinity Engine in a good way. It’s dialogue-driven in the way Planescape: Torment was, but was confident enough to avoid the pitfalls of combat that punctuated the D&D games in favor of a mechanical challenge of skill checks. All conflict is done through dialogue, either through picking a dialogue choice or engaging in a skill check. The game also helpfully gives you feedback, not only in your skill totals, but in how your actions influence the choices you’ve made. Did you take the corrupt union boss’s check? He has you over a bit of a barrel so it’s harder to resist him. Did you impress Cuno with your marksmanship by shooting down the body? You have a bonus to impress him since you’ve already done it before. This sort of openness with the mechanics of the game helps smooth over understanding of the functions, as well as reinforce the themes. Since everything you do is in the dialogue trees, and all of these choices occur in dialogue, it stresses careful reading of the dialogue box as opposed to something you just blow through to get quest markers or goodies.

Alright, let’s talk about the plot. Since there will be spoilers and it’s a relatively recent game, I’m going to throw a cut in here.

One of the chief themes of the game is sadness and loss, it’s written all across the setting. Heck, it’s even written into the name. Disco is the archetypical music genre that is dead, despite its followers wishing that it could come back. Elysium, the afterlife of Greek mythology. It was a failed communist revolution followed by a failed monarchist rebellion followed by a capitalist invasion, and now exists as a pit of corruption, crime, and plenty of people within Martinase look back to the lost days by cleaving to the old political systems as a source of comfort. Communists and monarchists look back to the old communes that were established, capitalists look to the successful Coalition and the ability of capital to absorb its naysayers and failures into itself for success, and the moralists look at the other three and say “you extremists are absolutely insane!” and hold to their own centrist platform and the path of incremental caution. This is hardly unusual in our own history, with far too many historical examples to list here. There’s a longing there for something that is lost, the people you meet in the game are lost, even what seems to be simple comedic beats have their own secret wishes, like Cuno who ends up helping you in the final act if you lose Kim, and can even become a junior police officer once out of the thumb of Cunoeese. Harry can sing the saddest song about the littlest church, and it’s a perfect expression of his regret, as his reptile brain lets him know. The deserter is lost in regret, albeit an incredibly negative sort. He curses those who are not ‘committed’ like him, who aren’t willing to murder like him. He looks at the Rene, the old monarchist with his boule, and wishes only to pull the trigger and silence him.

The main character you inhabit is a great twist on the blank slate character that dominates the ‘western RPG.’ The main character starts the game passed out in his own drug-fueled excess. Where most RPG’s either expect reading a large lore dump (this was the case with the Forgotten Realms Infinity Engine games, which expected people to know who Cyric or Auril was) or largely wave it off with bland exposition, this was a game that made what happened an integral part of your character. What drives such a man to try and destroy himself so completely? Going through the game reveals the answer: it’s Dora, your ex-wife. Before, your obsession with your job (your case load, as noted by Kim, is exceptionally high), seemed to be at odds with your character’s penchant for substance abuse and overall instability, but exploring the failed relationship with Dora sheds new light on Harry DuBois. Dora was a wealthy woman, and your character was clearly a member of the lower classes given his demeanor and salary. Your character tried to immerse themselves in the work perhaps to earn more money, or simply to earn prestige to help alleviate the mismatch. It didn’t work, Dora left six years ago, and the detective has been alone ever since. By calculating the ‘cop tracks’ that the character can be on, the game can populate dialogue with references to the behavior, allowing the character to fill out aspects of themselves in a character-driven way. Tyranny did this with its campaign character generation, and Disco Elysium does it here. Such things are always going to be niche in RPG’s, the driving trend these days is instead make a completely blank character and have them be built out from actions taking place in the game world, but this typically leads to characters who rationalize performing optimal paths and who do everything the game offers in the world, which translates either into a lot of time doing repetitive content (in order to built up other character builds to the same level of mastery to the original build) or leads to ludo-narrative dissonance at the ease of which the character plows through the content, like becoming the Arch-Mage in Skyrim without being able to cast a single adept-level spell.

However, that isn’t to say that Harry is alone. Instead, the detective is quite a crowd is his own head, with the 24 various skills that he has developed largely advising, suggesting, yelling, and talking over each other. This was almost certainly part of the reason the original name of the game was “No Truce with the Furies.” The Furies, in Greek mythology were embodiment of vengeance, primal feelings that sought out their goals. These 24 skills in your head almost cannot be compromised with, only accepted or rejected. They’ll yell inside your own head to listen to them. Electrochemistry wants its next fix, Volition is certain that Klaasje is trying to manipulate you and wants you to slap cuffs on her right now, Physical Instrument wants you to show everyone who’s boss with fists while Authority wants the same with words. This was almost overwhelming at first, 24 characters to figure out in addition to my own character as well as Kim, Cuno, Joyce, Everett, and the Hanged Man made me wonder what exactly I was going to do. What was the difference between Volition and Composure, or Shivers and Inland Empire? It helps on a replay once you figure out what the skills actually mean and can help shape your character into your preferred vehicle for exploring Revanchol West. Dealing with these characters can be fun, insightful, and incredibly heartwarming, as the player can understand when they finally find out that Reptile Brain and Limbic System are simply trying to help Harry out with the loss of his ex-wife by trying to get rid of the sad feelings as best they can.

What helps with this though, is that failing skill checks is not a death sentence. One of the most annoying things in games comes when you depend upon success after success that is out of your control, it encourages save-scumming behavior. This isn’t to say that failure isn’t a valuable learning experience or that difficulty is something to be avoided; the enduring popularity of the Soulsborne genre suggests that difficulty is not itself a bad thing. But failure typically has to be fair. If instead a game drops you in a room with 25 gorgons, forcing you to roll 25 checks against petrification or die immediately, that’s not challenge, that’s just padding the length of the game by forcing repeat content. Disco Elysium instead makes failure, particularly of red skill checks, either entertaining or allowing alternate paths. I laughed with absolute glee when my character took off from Garte yelling at him about the trashed hotel room which ended up becoming a full sprint while flipping him the bird, causing me instead to run over the nice wheelchair-bound old lady, in true black comedy fashion, or that you can get into a nodding war with Kim that’s so intense that you actually break your neck. That the game offers so many different methods to the same path helps elevate the role-playing elements.

Similarly, one of the best moments of game design was when you looked at the billboard to find out where Ruby could have gone. It’s a difficult Shivers check, which might force people into an insurmountable wall if they haven’t upgraded their Shivers skill. However, doing stuff in the fishing village, from going on a date with the harpoon girl to tracking down what went on with the body on the boardwalk, gives you bonuses to the check, encouraging the character to perform the side quests and explore the bonus content.

The game’s side content really does reward some more of the Dirk Gently type of character that sees connectivity in anything. The old lady reading outside the bookstore doesn’t have a missing husband only to later be the wife of the man who died on the boardwalk, or that a grounded character won’t walk out into the water to speak with the apparition of Dora as the mythical Dolores Dei (another great reference to what was lost, the lost wife seen as the lost mythic Moralist conqueror and crusader) means that the more grounded character does have the more grounded, less intense story. But the short length encourages replayability, and the idea that a grounded character has a more grounded story is in it’s own way a commitment to the game’s overall vision, even if it means you miss out on a key insight the first time around.

I’m incredibly impressed at how the developers stuck to their visions and the finished product that they developed. My hat is off to them.

*SU Spoiler* More Episodes and Descriptions!

We got bombarded with a surprise from Cartoon Network! Not only are we graced with 10 episodes instead of 4 throughout the month of December, but episode titles with descriptions have been added. Of course, they are small descriptions and with a history of titles and descriptions being misleading, anything and nothing can happen! So without delay, let’s get started on some predictions!

1) “Little Homeschool” (Dec 7th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Welcome to Little Homeworld, a place on earth where Gems from all over the universe can come learn how to live together peacefully! But there’s one Gem who refuses to attend.”

This episode is likely an introduction episode. It will show how Little Homeworld functions and how the uncorrupted Gems and Homeworld Gems live on Earth. Although most are saying Jasper may appear in this episode, I believe the Gem refusing to attend is the new uncorrupted pink Gem we saw in the promo. It would be too soon for Jasper to enter and again this episode is to introduce the new series. Something may happen to the pink Gem on Little Homeworld or Steven but nothing serious to be a major plot point. We are going to start of with a light hearted introduction of the changes after the movie and how Gems are integrating on Earth as well as a new Gem society.

2) “Guidance” (Dec 7th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Amethyst has been helping Little Homeschool Gems find jobs on the boardwalk, but Steven isn’t sure about her approach.”

Amethyst and Steven have a great sibling like relationship. However, this episode is going to test the limits and fragility of said bond. Amethyst was made on Earth making her a great advisor to Gems who are just integrating. However, she tends to be more lax then the other Gems and will either have the Homeschool Gems pick their jobs or choose a job for them and just let them do it at their own pace. Steven will be worried because the Gems have only just learned about human culture and screw ups may ensue much like in Season 1. He may try to help the Gems in their current job or move them to another job. This course of action will offend Amethyst and cause an argument that will put a rift in their relationship. Depending on how the episode goes, either the conflict will be resolved or will continue. Even if the conflict is resolved, their relationship will not be the same as Amethyst will think Steven does not trust her in helping out and causes her self worth to dwindle a bit and Steven will feel a bit of guilt that will slowly cause self-doubt within himself. This episode will have some serious confrontation and is just the beginning of what’s to come.

��Rose Buds” (Dec 7th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven gets a surprise visit from some old friends, and even more surprising introductions from new ones.”

This episode is going to bring major conflict for Steven. The wording of the description is interesting in this episode. He gets a surprise visit from old friends, most likely the Famethyst as they were seen in the promo. The Famethyst will either visit Earth or Steven will visit the Zoo to check on how things have been. Since the Gem Empire has been dismantled, the Famethyst are free to be more relaxed. We will see how this care-free lifestyle will integrate with helping the zoomans since they cannot return to Earth from fear of culture shock. However, the description also stated an “even more surprising introduction from new ones” which we all highly anticipate is the unbubbled Rose Quartz Gems. We did see a Rose Quartz in the promo, so it highly likely the new Gems are Rose Quartz. We have no idea what their personality is or even their role on Homeworld. We will get to see what actual Rose Quartz Gems are. However, this is going to cause Steven some serious conflict as they look like his mother. Steven does not hate his mother but is starting to resent her more because of the mistakes she made that he must clean up. In trying to help the Rose Quartzes, he will feel awkward and may lash out at one of them. He is going to lash out his anger at an innocent Rose Quartz and Steven is going to feel extremely bad for letting his negative emotions about his mother hurt someone who did not know or deserve it. More negative emotions are going to build up. Knowing Steven, he will apologize to the Quartz gem because he knows they are not his mother much like how Steven is not Pink Diamond. Things are going to get serious from here on out, especially in the next episode.

“Volleyball” (Dec 7th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven is determined to help Pink Diamond’s original Pearl heal the scar on her face.”

I have already made a couple theories on Pink Pearl before the new episode information arrived (see below) and this episode is a favorite of mine! First of the title is misleading already. Volleyball is a game where people form 2 teams and use their hands to hit a ball up in the air to the opposing teams until it hits the ground. A lot of Steven Universe titles have been misleading in the past. After talking to a friend either 2 things will happen related to the title: could be a metaphor for Pink Pearl being emotionally beaten back and forth causing her scar to become worse or there will be an actual volleyball game somewhere in the episode. If this takes place on Homeworld, the metaphor scenario is likely but if this takes place in the Zoo, the volleyball game may happen. Besides the misleading title, notice how the description says Steven is “determined” to help Pink Pearl. This has me worried because sometimes being determined to do something can backfire. We can tell Pink Pearl is still obsessed with Pink Diamond. She may stay on Homeworld because of her obsession but she can also be in the Zoo as the whole base was made for Pink Diamond. Her crack is getting worse from her instability and she still smiles despite being out of White Diamond’s control. Steven won’t be able to heal her crack with his healing powers because it is related to mental not physical damage. Nothing seems to be working and Steven will become frustrated. Pink Pearl may also add to that frustration by being stubborn or naïve of Steven’s help and project her obsession of Pink Diamond onto him. This will cause new powers to form and from the promo it seems the new one may be the overpowered scream Pink Steven emits from CYM. This will be harmful to everyone around him and Pearl will most likely defend Pink Pearl from Steven. When Steven calms down, Pearl is likely to help Pink Pearl as both have been through the same ordeal just in different scenarios. The conflict and maybe Pink Pearl’s scar will resolve itself, but this will add more to Steven’s negative emotions and we will see the first onset of Steven’s new powers emerging.

“Bluebird” (Dec 14th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven questions the motive of a mysterious fusion that suddenly shows up at this house.”

In this episode, we get to see the new Eyeball Ruby and Aquamarine fusion. From the title, we can guess the name of the new Gem is Bluebird Azurite and after looking up the Gem, the color and design are the same. At first it may seem weird Steven is suspicious of this new Gem, but we must remember they are the fusion of Eyeball Ruby and Aquamarine. These 2 Gems do not like Steven at all and Steven has had bad experiences with both Gems. Eyeball Ruby tried to kill Steven in space and Aquamarine kidnapped his friends and took him prisoner to Homeworld. However, Bluebird Azurite may appeal to Steven’s caring nature and Steven will have to help them out. This could either be a ploy to infiltrate Little Homeworld for the Era 3 rebellion or the fusion may be lost and wants to find a new purpose in life. This episode can go either way and will still affect Steven. If Bluebird Azurite is a spy and attacks Steven, this will frustrate Steven because he let his guard down and cause conflict to his own principles. If Bluebird Azurite is lost and finds what they are looking for, Steven will be relieved but may have guilt into thinking the Gem had bad intentions. The first scenario seems likely because fusions do have the mindsets of both Gems and having hatred for Steven will fuel Bluebird Azurite’s motives.

“A Very Special Episode” (Dec 14th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Rainbow Quartz 2.0 promised to hang out with Onion the same day Sunstone scheduled a home safety Geminar! How can Steven be in two places, and two fusions, at once?”

This episode is already self explanatory on the conflict. This also reminds me of a lot of sitcoms in the early 2000s that have a funny dilemma of being in two places at once. We must wonder how Steven is going to deal with this scenario. A few Youtubers have speculated Steven will have the power to duplicate or make hologram versions of himself. There were questions about how Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz were present in multiple areas and the result was duplication. If Steven does have this power, he will either use the duplicate Stevens or Holo-Stevens to fuse with Pearl and Garnet or reshape his duplicates to look like the fusion. If the duplicates can fuse with other Gems, they may be unstable and cause chaos. If the duplicates are reshaped to look like Rainbow Quartz 2.0 and Sunstone, there may be some conflict because they lack any personality and if they resemble the Holo-Pearls, they may attack if feeling threatened. Either way, it will get chaotic quick and Steven will have to take control of the situation. The situation will calm down and Steven will explain what happens. Depending on how the Crewniverse wants to go this could either end in a funny yet wholesome manner or it can end with serious undertones leading to future plot.

“Snow Day” (Dec 21st, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven and the Crystal Gems get a chance to catch up when they’re all snowed in together.”

This episode is pretty self-explanatory. Much like “We Need to Talk” and ‘Three Gems and a Baby” this episode will be campy, and we get to see what the Gems did after CYM and the movie. At first it will be wholesome because everyone gets to find out what life for the Gems has been after dismantling the empire and uncorrupting the Gems on Earth. However, Steven may realize the distant he and the Crystal Gems are because everyone is doing their own thing and have not had a chance to hang out or catch up. But episodes like these usually end in a good note but the Crewniverse may add this as fuel to the fire or in this case to Steven’s emotional state.

“Why So Blue?” (Dec 21st, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven has heard rumors of a pair of Gems that are still destroying worlds. If he can’t stop them, maybe Lapis can.”

This is another highly anticipated episode. The pair of Gems is the 2 Lapis Lazulis we saw in the introduction. Because they are destroying other worlds, they are likely going to space. It would be very interesting if the Off Colors could come but I am guessing either it will be just Steven and Lapis or Peridot and Bismuth will join as well. This will be a Lapis centered episode and would give more information on Lapis’s status and life before arriving on Earth. It would be strange as to why the Lazulis would be destroying Earth on their own. This is highly hinted they are part of the Era 3 rebellion or they could also just be extremely mad their titles are taken away and want to blow off steam or piss people off. What I really want to see is a Lapis development in this episode. She has developed a lot in the Steven Universe series but now we get to see how much she has truly developed in this episode.

“Little Graduation” (Dec 28th, 8 p.m. EST)

“Steven and the Gems celebrate Little Homeschool’s first gradation class.”

This will be wholesome at first. From the press release, we saw a picture of the Off Colors in stage with graduation caps and Steven on a mic. We get to see Steven being so proud of the Off Colors and Homeworld Gems graduating from Little Homeschool and integrating into their new lives in Little Homeworld. However, Jasper will appear and crash the party. We can tell Jasper is not fond of Steven and the new era. She even yells, “you are not my diamond!” telling Steven he is not Pink Diamond. According to Sugar in a podcast Jasper is a complex character. She may act tough and rough, but she hates herself because of where she is from: Earth. Gems from Earth have lots of negative stereotypes and Jasper is no exception. Although she had a high ranking in the Gem Empire, she still gets remarks about her beginnings and that can mess with Jasper’s self-worth. Now that the Diamonds have decided to listen to Steven’s new rules of peace, Jasper is stripped of her status and has nothing. Jasper will try to take out Steven and hope she can restore the Gem Empire to its former glory or may just want to fight Steven. Once the fight ensues, Jasper will overpower Steven and Steven’s anger will manifest Pink Steven. With Pink Steven form he will overpower Jasper and even poof her. He may even come close to try shattering her until the Crystal Gems arrive and stop him (hopefully it does not go that far). Once Steven realizes what has happened, he will feel horrible, but the Gems will help him calm down. He will wait for Jasper to reform and maybe they can have a conversation where Jasper does not want to punch him first. There is also a possibility Jasper does not get poofed by Pink Steven and retreats. The main point is Jasper will be focused on this episode if she does not appear in “Little Homeschool” and will become a good antagonist to Steven.

“Prickly Pair” (Dec 28th, 8 p.m. EST)

“After leaving Little Homeschool, Steven has found a new hobby, plants.”

With everything Steven has gone through is such a short time, he needs something to relax. Gardening is a great way to blow off steam and not think about past events plaguing Steven. It also shows Steven does not fully resent his mother. Rose Quartz and Steven both love plants and their powers do have an affect on plant life. However, because Steven has been dealing with a lot and his negative emotions are consuming him, this will have consequences. Because his powers are related to his emotions, his plant powers will go haywire. Steven will plant a cactus and his spit (however it will happen) will come into contact. Cactus Steven is born! Unlike the Watermelon Stevens, Cactus Steven will have no sentient intelligence and just be a crazy monster embodying Steven’s negativity. Steven will try to calm it down and reason with it but Cactus Steven will not listen and continue to rampage. This will be one of the times Steven cannot help and will have to take Cactus Steven down. Unfortunately, this means Steven cannot do any gardening until his powers are in check or he will have to be extremely careful. Either way, he has no hobby to ease his stress and will just add more onto his stress. Steven cannot catch a break and his issues will keep piling up.

This series is going to focus on Steven dealing with his issues. When the episode titles and descriptions were released, there was an extended synopsis of the series. “Steven Universe Future, after saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up loose ends. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own. Haunted by the past and lost in the present, Steven begins manifesting new, uncontrollable powers that the Crystal Gems have never seen from him before. What does it all mean, and what does Steven want for his future?” These first 10 episodes of the series are going to show us more of mess Steven has to fix from his mother’s past. All those problems are going to affect his mental and emotional state to the point where his powers are going out of control. There are two characters we have not seen in the promo: White Diamond going pink and Wormy Boi (who could be corrupted/unstable Steven). He is likely going to affect those characters as well causing him more stress. Once those antagonists and problems are solved, Steven still has unresolved issues he needs to deal with. Those issues will tie to his new uncontrollable powers which can cause him to lash out and cause havoc. Haunted by his past is related to Pink Diamond’s mistakes being fixed and lost in the present is after he solves all those problems. Once everything is handled, Steven will have to figure out what he wants for his own future. Sometimes to move on into the future we must accept our past and follow the present. Once Steven can accept that will he know the answer. I am very excited to see what this series will bring to the Steven Universe universe!

What are you favourite period dramas, I need something new to watch.

the fact that people trust my taste is questionable. also, i don’t watch anything like you probably haven’t already heard of but REGARDLESS:

harlots - story about 18th century sex workers in london. focuses mostly around the wells-north family who we love dearly and wish all happiness (ha, not likely). all the women are lovely and deserve better. lots of incredible costuming, georgian architecture, so much sex, and family dramaaaaaaaaaaa. actual queer ladies! so excited!

peaky blinders - post ww1 organised crime family tries to stick it to the toffs and for the love of god just hold it together. people from the midlands have a belter of a time. i hate this show but only because i love it so much and want it to be Better. all the women are lovely and deserve better. lots of incredible costuming, working class grit, sad boys, and family draaammmmaaaaaa. people from America often say they can’t understand a single fucking word of it.

the crown - queen lizzie before she was old. family draammmmaaaaa. sumptuous costuming. toffs. forbidden affairs. matters of state and furrowed brows. you know, monarchy stuff. the 50′s were shit, but by gum were they an Aesthetic.

jamestown - 17th century virginia colony. starts with a group of women going over to marry men in the colony. all the women are lovely and deserve better. chacrow is a sweet baby angel.

turn - 18th century revolutionary war. ben tallmadge is somehow simultaneously a puppy who needs Help, but also a terrifying soldier/spy master. Lafayette. the women are all lovely and deserve better. so much bromance.

vikings - it’s pretty terrible, and it gets worse, but i invested the time anyway. again, the vikings are an Aesthetic. family drama. all the women are lovely and deserve better, even if they are not actually great people but whatever they all get their characters destroyed or killed off anyway. i love religious imagery so it appeals to me. there is queerbaiting but you accept it. great for fans of axes. the siege of paris is still the best episode i think.

the scandalous lady w - set in the 18th century, based on a real thing. all the men are terrible and deserve nothing. natalie dormer just wants to be happy with her boyfriend but society is terrible and the law is wrong. that scene of her throwing the coin is Good. THE COSTUMING. i think we’ve established i have a thing for period dress in all it’s forms and also the georgian era is my Style Heaven, like clothes, architecture, art, EVERYTHING.

the tudors - obvs and obvs. i also have a thing for natalie dormer, add that to the list.

versailles - it’s beautiful, it’s bitchy, it’s tragic, it’s resplendent. there are queer people who are occasionally happy. louis is a dick but i also want to give him a hug and tell him it’s going to be ok sometimes. i think i just like george blagden and me not being able to see past his puppiness. also court intrigue and spy drama happens.

taboo - tom hardy makes this. it’s weird. i love it. he does have sex with his half sister. just...be aware of that. is he having a mental break or is his mum a witch ghost? we don’t know.

boardwalk empire - like peaky blinders but american. post ww1 organised crime right up to the formation of the mafia for reals. everyone is terrible but they dress well.

frontier - jason mamoa makes this. 18th century canadian fur trade. they spend lots of time in the wilderness and the snow and i love it.

ordeal by innocence - agatha christie adaptation. horrible people adopt lots of children who sort of tolerate each other and then the mum gets murdered and everyone is Suspicious of everyone else.

the alienist - victoriany crime stuff. very gory. dead kids. makes you sad. i love everyone in it though and want to Protect them. many, many triggers be prepared.

Ambergris!

Amberlough, Armistice, Amnesty...Ambergris? That could be a potential title for a 4th book, right? I mean, Ambergris is basically whale poo that makes perfume, but hey, it’d be a cool title. It’s also the basis of an awesome Bob’s Burgers episode.

I couldn’t find a gif from the actual episode, so...I picked this one.

And by all of that, I mean: Amnesty, book three of the Amberlough Dossier by Lara Elena Donnelly!

Hoo boy.

So there are two things I really, really love in a story: old timey spycraft (there’s a reason why one of my favorite ever TV series is TURN: Washington’s Spies. You don’t get more crafty than 18th century spycrafting!) and Art Deco. I love Art Deco. I love the style that emerged in the 1920s and 30s - when fashion, especially for women, took a massive heel-face-turn, when electricity was only just becoming mainstream, cars were phasing out horse-drawn transport, radio was becoming a thing and everybody smoked like chimneys and drank like fish, and figured it probably wasn’t bad for you. Seriously, you go from the 1910s, where women’s skirts were floor-length and heaven forbid someone see your ankles, to dresses with hemlines above the knee. We’re talking knee-exposure, people! That is a DEFCON-1 sartorial situation, people! Edwardian matrons are having heart attacks at the sight of their granddaughters’ knees. The 20s and 30s it seems combine the sort of fun, old-timey lawlessness of Ye Olden Days with just a enough modernity so things are fun. I mean, come on, it’s like Boardwalk Empire or The Untouchables, or Jeeves and Wooster or Caberet. Or the planet Sigma Iotia II from the Star Trek episode A Piece of the Action.

OK, so my love of the 20s and 30s and old timey spycraft has been well-established, right? Yeah, those are both things I very much enjoy. I love John Le Carre’s George Smiley books because that’s back when spying involved handwritten notes taped to the backs of benches and dead-drops in train station lockers. I’m sure modern spycraft still uses some of these old-school methods - you can’t hack a piece of paper, after all - but old timey spycraft just sounds, I dunno, more fun than modern spycraft. At least, it’s more fun for me to read about.

Anyway! This brings me around to Lara Elena Donnelly’s Amberlough Dossier series.

The Amberlough Dossier is technically a fantasy series because it takes place in a world that doesn’t exist. Though that world seems extremely familiar - it’s basically Sigma Iotia II from A Piece of the Action, or Berlin of Christopher Isherwood’s 1930s - a world of decadence, caberet, free-flowing booze and cigarettes...that is slowly rotting from the inside out. 1930s Germany is a fascinating place - and by “fascinating” I mean “pants-pissing-levels of terrifying.” As someone who spent many, many, many, some would say “too many” years spent learning German, a language I almost never, ever use in my daily life (like, ever), I also spent a lot of time learning about German history. The way the rise of the Nazis also saw the rise of the Kabarett. Anyway, Amberlough City is very much like a mix of New York, London, and Berlin of the 30s. You’ve got all the fun of the 30s, mixed with the rise of a Fascist party called the One State Party, or OSP, frequently referred to as “Ospies.”

Now, if you haven’t read Amberlough and Armistice, you should. You really should. In fact, why don’t you do that. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Did you read them? Aren’t they fantastic? OK. So, on to the grand finale: Amnesty!

Just as Armistice begins with a three-year time jump after the events of Amberlough, Amnesty does the same, only this time, it’s five years after the events of Armistice, eight years after everything that went down during Amberlough. I’m not always a fan of time jumps - more often than not they make me angry, because I want to know absolutely everything that happens all the time always. Only, in the case of Amnesty, as with Armistice, I got over it pretty quick. Donnelly knows how to smooth over a time jump, filling us in with the events that happened in-between, and it does make sense that, for the most part, most major events of interest don’t always take place in perfect, chronological order. Anyway, we’re at five years after Armistice - Aristide and Daoud failed in their efforts to find Cyril in the Lisoan jungle, and they ended up setting up their own half-legit import/export business instead. Things are going pretty well - then Aristide gets a phone call from Prince Asiyah. They’ve found Cyril. Gasp!!

Meanwhile, in Amberlough, the Ospies have fallen. The revolution is over. If you were hoping for a whole book dedicated to guerilla warfare between Spotlight and the Ospies, well...sorry, you’ll be disappointed. Instead, we skip immediately to the interim government, trying to rebuild Amberlough from scratch. Lillian DePaul, with her husband Jinadh Addas and their son Stephen, now 13, have relocated back to the DePaul family home in Amberlough. The houses (a country estate and a town house) didn’t fare too well during Ospie rule, nor did the DePaul family’s assets. Plus, there’s also Cyril’s reputation is traitor to the nation to deal with. So Lillian, practically broke, has to contend with two crumbling houses that she can’t afford to staff properly, a husband who is not 100% happy with life in Amberlough, and a 13-year-old boy who acts like, well, a 13-year-old boy. Namely: moody, pissy and generally insufferable.

Then she gets a call out of nowhere from her old kind-of-sort-of-friend, Aristide Makricosta, with the news that her brother Cyril is still alive, and heading back to come stay with her. Yay?

Poor Cyril. Things were not great for him during the 8 years between the end of Amberlough and the start of Amnesty. He’d spent most of that time running dangerous ops for the Lisoan government in the jungle, with little regard for his own life. So when he finally emerges back to civilization he’s...well, different. There’s definitely a strong combination of PTSD and extreme guilt there. Plus a bit of survivalist kleptomania (hey, if you don’t know when you’re going to eat next, you’d squirrel away bits of food, too). Cyril is basically a man with a death wish, not giving a fuck about much of anything, preferring instead to retreat behind the mask of his work identities. Now he’s back - reunited with his old lover, Aristide, and his sister, Lillian. Plus, he gets to finally meet his nephew, Stephen.

But Cyril’s return to Amberlough isn’t exactly the best idea: once word gets out that he’s back, one of the politicians running for president of the new Amberlough decides to use Cyril as a political platform, namely that he should be arrested and put to death for treason. Cyril is like “sure, OK,” to that, but Lillian and Aristide? Yeah, they definitely don’t like that idea, and now they have to scramble to save not just Cyril, but themselves as well.

OK, so I fricking love this series. I tore through Amberlough and Armistice in just a couple of days, and I’m a slow reader, so that’s saying something. Amnesty is a completely satisfying end to the series, though I will still want more details about Cyril’s SuperHappyFun Jungle Adventures, or Aristide’s adventures in Porachis Bollywood or Coredlia’s rise as the leader of the resistance. Having those time gaps between books means we get to imagine all the adventures that happened in between. Which means: fanfiction! Woo! Or possible future short stories of novellas. (Cough cough hint hint Ms. Donnelly). If you’re not fond of big time gaps, then you might find this series frustrating, but still, Amnesty is an absolutely satisfying conclusion to the series.

My biggest complaint is, however, most definitely a spoiler, so I will be as vague as possible: one of the characters is killed off between Armistice and Amnesty. At first, I was pissed - it’s like when a character is killed off between seasons of a TV show because the actor got fired or left for a different job. You’re like, “noooo!” but, going directly from Armistice to Amnesty, the death of this particular character does make sense, and it’s not like their death is dismissed with a hand wave. It’s a huge part of the story. I’d already forgiven the off-screen death by the time I’d gotten halfway through the book. So if you’re tempted to throw the book across the room when you learn that [character] died between books, don’t. Keep going. You’d be cheating yourself otherwise.

My second biggest complaint is that we never get a map that includes the exact locations of Liso and Porachis. I want to know where everything is, damn it!

In all, you need to read this series. If you want a fantastic LGBTQ romance, a story that spans nearly a decade, old-timey Le Carre-level spycraft, political infighting, scheming, and a 1930s-esque world, then you need to read the entire Amberlough Dossier. Go on. You know you want to.

Boardwalk Empire Section One

Chapters 1-6

1. Have you ever seen the TV Series, Boardwalk Empire? Have you ever been to Atlantic City? If not, what do you know about it? I have seen the show! I actually really, really love the show. Though I've only seen the first two seasons because my favorite character died and I'm still trying to ~recover from that before I continue. I do plan to continue though at some point. I'm just still upset. It's been over a year though since I finished season two so it might be about time to get going again. And, anyway, I haven't been to Atlantic City, unfortunately. I would like to go someday but the only place I've been on the east coast is Georgia. But someday I hope to either move to the east coast or at least travel there some more. But since watching BE and learning that Monopoly is based on Atlantic City, I'm actually super interested in it as a historical place and I would like to go there someday! And honestly I don't know a whole lot about it?? Just mainly what I've seen from the show and from that episode of How I Met Your Mother when they went to Atlantic City. And basically that it's the east coast Vegas. So other than that, not a lot?? I'm excited to learn more though!!

2. Who was Jonathan Pitney and what did he want that he couldn’t achieve on his current career path as a physician? How did he finally get the railroad to come to Atlantic City? Jonathan Pitney was a small town doctor but back before being a doctor was a profession through which you made a lot of money. So he did A LOT of work but for really poor people and mostly on the barter system and didn't even make enough to support himself. So he mostly lived off the kindness of his mother-in-law. So eventually he decided that he wanted to ~make his mark on the world. So he tried politics but that didn't really go all that well?? So instead he set his sights on Absecon Island which was an island that was barely inhabited??? This guy had used it literally as farmland and he'd had ten kids and owned basically the whole island and so with all of his kids they'd run it as this giANT farm and as a result he was really rich??? Well he's since died and his heirs didn't want to be farmers so they were willing to sell it. So Pitney's dream was to buy the island and build a resort for the rich and to sell it as a ~seaside health resort. Well the problem was that the island wasn't easy to get to?? So Pitney realized that if he could get the railroad to go through there, he could find financial backers and make his dream a reality. So he petitioned for years to bring the railroad to the island but no one was really interested? Eventually he realized he was approaching this wrong and, instead, if he could get some of the rich people from Southern Jersey interested then he could possibly have some influence to get the railroad through and also have some backers. So when he got Samuel Richards interested, that's when everything started actually going his way. Richards was rich and wanted the railroad to come his way anyway because it would help his business and make him richer. He didn't really buy into Pitney's dream but he is the one who helped find backers and put up a lot of his own money and got the railroad through there, finally starting the process to turn Absecon Island into Atlantic City.

3. Why was the boardwalk built? It was originally built to stop sand from being tracked into businesses/hotels. There was so much sand that it would end up EVERYWHERE and it was ruining carpets and furniture and things. So the original boardwalk was built but, hilariously enough, it wasn't permanent. It was only for summer and the boards would be removed during the winter and then replaced when summer arrived again. But, eventually, they saw the potential in the boardwalk and started building shops along it and then built a permanent boardwalk and that ended up being one of the selling points that brought in tourists. People would come from all over just to walk on the boardwalk. It was the first one like it in the world.

4. What opportunities did Atlantic City offer Blacks? Despite this, what were some of the numerous inequalities that they still faced living there? Blacks working in Atlantic City could make more money than anywhere they worked in the South and they could work "normal" hours. When the Civil War ended, it completely ruined the economy in the South and Blacks who remained there could basically only get jobs as domestic help (which was literally a step above slavery; they worked long hours, sometimes as much as 12 hours per day, and had few, if any, days off) or a sharecropper (which was basically like being a slave to the land since they were responsible for doing all the work, as they did when they were a slave, but all their money was tied up in the home they received on the land). So, if they wanted to make money, they would go north. Eventually, Atlantic City was such a draw for Blacks that it had the largest black population in the North. Working in the resorts, there were any number of jobs for Blacks, all of which paid pretty well. Working in hotels also meant that they weren't forced into long hours as they would if they were domestic help. However, even though they were afforded much better wages, White and Black was still seen as very different. It was almost like the Whites wanted the Blacks to show up and work and then just not exist after the workday ended. The Blacks ended up taking over the North of Atlantic City and most were still too poor to even afford their own houses. Therefore, housing was super crowded. And even though most of them worked on the Boardwalk, the Whites didn't like them venture there during the "off hours" and visiting the Boardwalk as consumers. Thus, the North of Atlantic City became like a city of its own with the Blacks meeting their own needs with new businesses opening to serve only Blacks. So even though Blacks were making way more money in Atlantic City than they would've anywhere else, segregation was starting with a bang.

5. What did the Bulletin try to put an end to in Atlantic City? Why didn’t their efforts work? The Bulletin tried to put an end to prostitution in Atlantic City but publishing a lot of articles "exposing" the brothels. Except, the Bulletin was a Philadelphia paper and most of the business in Atlantic City came from Philadelphia. At that time, Philadelphia was dominated by Quakers and a few other religious organizations. That meant that it was a very religious city and, basically, there was nowhere to go for a good time. Insert Atlantic City. It was only 60 miles from Philadelphia and since the Industrial Revolution really boomed in Philadelphia, the factory workers would spend six long days working and then on Sunday, instead of going to church, they'd hop on a train and go to Atlantic City. And they were looking to wind down and have a good time. Thus, the brothels wouldn't close just because a newspaper article when they were making more money off the Philadelphia factory workers than they knew what to do with. Bars were also supposed to be closed on Sunday but, in Atlantic City, their main purpose was to show patrons a good time, despite the laws. So most people just started ignoring the newspaper articles until, eventually, the paper stopped wasting their time writing them.

6. Who was Mabel and what happened to her? Mabel was Nucky's high school sweetheart and eventual wife. However, one year she ended up with a cough she couldn't shake and was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Nucky ended up taking her to a sanitarium in Colorado and intended to stay with her until she was well again. However, three weeks later Nucky returned to Atlantic City on the train, seated next to her coffin. Losing Mabel changed Nucky and he was never quite the same after her death.

7. Who screened every single applicant who applied to work in either Atlantic City or County? What were your duties to him if you were hired? Nucky personally screened every single applicant in Atlantic City or County. Sometimes, applicants would be told that they already had the job, they just had to meet with Nucky before they started. At this meeting, Nucky would usually just talk with them and ask them to pledge their loyalty to both him and the Republican Party. That was the main requirement to work in Atlantic City, especially if you were in law enforcement. Then, once hired, they were required to pay kickbacks which meant paying from one to seven percent of their salary, depending on how much they earned, to the Republican Party. They would also have an assigned number of voters they had to make sure turned out on election day. Some of them were dead, others were from out of town. But the city employee had to make sure they voted, even if it meant doing it themselves in different districts.

8. What contributed to Atlantic City’s financial struggles of the early 1930s? The Great Depression basically killed the Atlantic City economy. So when the Great Depression hit, the first thing to go was vacations so that meant that tourism was gone. But then Prohibition was repealed and that was the nail in the coffin. Because even when the Great Depression started, Atlantic City could still rely on the sale of alcohol. But when that stopped, they didn't even have the day trippers to rely on and their economy totally sunk. Ten of the fourteen banks closed. And most of the well established businesses couldn't keep afloat. The hotels were constantly in the red. And there was no relief in sight. Especially when the FBI came to town and started indicting everyone who'd prospered in the 20's.

Section One Reading Journal

So. I read 30 pages of this book almost three years ago. And since I’m actual trash it took me this long to ~finally get back to this book. But. Here I am. Ready to finish the thing.

Anyway, it’s not that I don’t like this book because the information is honestly really, really interesting. It’s just that it’s not presented in the most interesting fashion. I honestly fell asleep twice just trying to make it through this section. Because it reads like a textbook???

But the story itself is really interesting. Atlantic City and its entire history fascinates me. And it’s really interesting to see what the show stuck with and what the show decided to change. I just wish it weren’t quite so... dry.

So. That being said, it was a bit of a struggle to get through this section. Though it didn’t take me three years. I read the 30 pages on vacation then moved and then I just now read the other 90 or so. It just took me a while to get back to it.

But I’ll definitely be finishing this here soon. Because I’m really curious about where it’s going from here?? It seems like it has already covered the run of the show. So we’re in uncharted territory from what I know of this story.

So. Can’t wait to continue and learn more about Atlantic City! #fascinated

Part 5

As the months wore on, Spencer’s attention drew away from his own troubles (and of course the ever-present words) and toward his mother. All the love in the world couldn’t keep her mind from slipping away slowly – and it broke his heart. It weighed him down more than any words ever could, so he did what any loving son would.

Day in and day out, Spencer searched high and low for something that would help his mother. There was no cure for Alzheimer’s – at least not yet, but there were remedies and treatments that staved off the worst of it for a period of time, and besides her own son, it was her mind that Diana Reid prided herself on. Even if she couldn’t remember him, he wanted her to have some control over her own mind.

Scouting for helpful remedies was much more difficult than he could’ve possibly imagined, but eventually he found a place in Houston, Texas that was conducting a trial. If he could get her in, and she wasn’t on the placebo end of things, she might have a change for a more lucid, if not longer life, and at this point, that’s all either of them could hope for.

Hotch had been very accommodating when it came to giving him time off, but then like so many before him, he had to leave as well. Although it pained him to see another mentor go, this one he had understood more than most. With Scratch after Hotch, he could no longer risk the possibility that Scratch wouldn’t come after Jack, and with Haley already lost to one madman with a desire for driving Aaron Hotchner over the brink, Jack’s life stood above all else, so they went into witness protection in the hopes that Jack would live a long and fulfilling life. That left someone else from the team to step into the role of Unit Chief, and he couldn’t have picked anyone better than Emily. With her experience at Interpol and her experience with and love for the team, she was a perfect fit.

She excelled of course, and she also gave him all the time he needed to find accommodations for his mother. When he took off, he knew they were bringing in another agent, someone to fill the vacancy, but of course, not the shoes, of one of his best friends, Derek Morgan, but he hadn’t met the man yet, so today would be that day.

Finally back from setting his mother up in Houston, he was back at work. There were donuts on the conference room table when he walked in, and although life hadn’t been kind to him lately, he felt like things might’ve finally been on the upswing. His mother was in a great facility, and he was eating his favorite donut. What could possibly have been better? He nearly got lost in thought while he was waiting for the rest of the team to come in, but he was interrupted by deft footfalls.

When he turned around, he saw a man he presumed to be Luke Alvez, the new team member he hadn’t met yet. “No handshakes, right?” He asked, his smile wide and teeth whiter than snow. “Your reputation precedes you.”

“As does yours,” he said with a smile. “Dr. Spencer Reid.”

“Luke Alvez.”

Although he’d always considered himself attracted to both men and women, attracted to personality and intelligence above all else, he’d never found himself immediately attracted to a man. But as Luke stood in front of him, there was something about Luke that put him at ease. Before his mind could wander, the rest of the team came in and got them started on their case of the week, or weeks as sometimes the case had been.

Luke fit in very well with the team. He had a great relationship with Garcia, even though she would deny it until the cows came home. They’d bicker like brother and sister. Emily respected. He was great with Henry and Michael when he met them, so JJ loved him. Rossi and Stephen appreciated his expertise as well. After all, Rossi was the one who had convinced him to join the team in an official capacity. There was nothing about Luke Alvez that didn’t fit in well with the dynamic they already had going.

Spencer couldn’t tell if Emily had noticed the spark in his eyes when he first met Luke, or if it had just been convenient, but he and Luke had been paired off a number of times since he’d joined the team, and every time, he found himself rambling on and on about cases, TV shows, and really anywhere that his train of thought stopped, but the difference with Luke was that he always seemed to be listening – truly listening.

Any one could see that Spencer Reid loved his teammates and that his teammates loved him. They would bleed and had bled for each other, but not everyone truly understood or cared to understand Spencer’s ramblings, but Luke was different. Not only did he listen; he seemed truly interested in what he had to say. After a while, their car rides weren’t silent, like so many before them. Instead, on their way to witnesses’ houses and police departments, Luke would take the wheel and Spencer would sit in the passenger seat, talking in perpetuity about whether or not Steven Moffat would ever give The Doctor a real name (Spencer pondered this but Luke had never seen the show), whether Lord Petyr Baelish was a Faceless Man or not (something both firmly believed) or whether Ferris Bueller was just a figment of his friend Cameron’s imagination. They’d debate crazy fan theories about their favorite TV shows, both loved Game of Thrones, while Luke watched a show called Boardwalk Empire and Spencer, of course, watched Doctor Who.

Luke promised to introduce Spencer to Boardwalk Empire one day and in turn, he’d watch Doctor Who with Spencer, something he couldn’t even fathom. The only person who watched the time-traveling doctor with him was Garcia. Maybe he could get Luke and Garcia to come over and watch…or maybe not because they’d probably bicker like little kids.

Either way, it felt nice to have someone around that truly seemed interested in what he had to say, whether it was about work, or whether it was just about something that made him happy. Whenever Luke would look at him, his eyes wide with interest at his statistic of the hour, Spencer would feel little butterflies fluttering around his stomach. On top of him being kind and funny, Spencer couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was, and on more than one occasion, he’d found himself wondering what it would be like to fall asleep on his shoulder, comforted knowing that he was loved unconditionally. It was still in the back of his mind – that idea of long-lasting love, but it hadn’t fought to the front until he met Luke. He wondered if Luke felt the same or if it was one-sided.

Still – he didn’t really have time for that now.

For now, his mother needed him, and she’d taken a turn for the worse, so every few months he’d travel down to Mexico to procure the supplement that seemed to be helping his mother. It wasn’t illegal in the United States – not strictly, but it wasn’t exactly legal either, so he kept it under the radar. He knew he could lose his job for what he was doing, but there was nothing he wouldn’t risk for his mother, so long as she was alive.

Each time he went, he was careful. He talked to as few people as he could while still obtaining what he needed, but somewhere along the line, he took a wrong step and landed in Mexican jail cell accused of murder, which he knew he didn’t commit, but he also couldn’t remember a damn thing about the previous twelve hours.

Now, here he was, half-drugged on what, he wasn’t sure, with no remembrance of what happened the day before, accused of murder, and the only that mattered to him was getting back to his mother and the BAU – his home.

When, not if, he got out of this mess, he promised himself he’d do the one thing he’d always been so afraid of – he’d take a chance on love. Luke didn’t know how he felt, but Spencer had to know.

Shortly after being released from the prison in Mexico, he was granted trial in the United States and was set for arraignment. He couldn’t say he wasn’t worried, because of course he was, any sane man would be, but he knew he had his family at his back. JJ was helping him with his mother while he sorted this whole thing out, and Rossi had already said that he’d post bail whether it was $100,000 or Rossi had to sell his mansion to do it; he’d do it happily.

That’s why his heart nearly exploded as the gavel hit the table and he was denied bail. Turning back toward his friends had been the worst decision he’d made thus far. Seeing their helpless faces and knowing there was a decent chance he wouldn’t make it out of prison alive made him nearly collapse. The only things keeping him upright were the guards on either side of him.

On his way to the prison, he went numb. How could anyone believe they’d end up in a place like this? Especially someone like him. For more than a decade, he’d spent his days putting people behind bars, and now he was going there himself.

“You’re going to need to take that off,” the guard said, bringing out of his self-defeating thoughts and toward the bandage he’d had on for so many years.

Spencer had to ask for clarification. “What? I can’t.”

“Unless there is a medical reason for it to be there, which according to the in-house doctor, there isn’t, then it needs to come off.”

He swallowed hard, his mouth going dry at the prospect of taking the bandage off. When he did, he’d see the words – the ones that he’d been avoiding for years. As he unwrapped the bandage, he imagined what they might say. He both hoped and dreaded that they’d be the words he remembered.

And there they were.

INTERVIEW: “Puzzle” Director Marc Turtletaub

Running a bit late on this one, especially since I conducted this interview all the way back in January at the Sundance Film Festival where Marc Turtletaub’s second film as a director, Puzzle, first premiered.

Puzzle is based on Natalia Smirnoff’s 2009Argentine film Rompecabezas, and it starsKelly Macdonald (Trainspotting, Boardwalk Empire) as Agnes, a beleaguered housewife from Connecticut, who discovers she has an affinity for solving jigsaw puzzles after receiving one for her birthday. Wanting to find more challenging puzzles, she ventures into New York’s Greenwich Village (noteworthy factoid: on the block where this writer used to live) and sees an ad for a puzzle champ looking for a partner. Said champ is Irrfan Khan’s Robert, an eccentric New Yorker who demands Agnes practice with him frequently. To get away, Agnes tells her husband Louie (David Denman) that she’s taking care of a sick aunt, but as she continues to practice with Robert, one thing leads to another and Agnes’ dissatisfaction with her domestic life gets her to neglect her family. It’s puzzling, indeed.

Mr. Turtletaub is an interesting case when it comes to filmmakers, because he is better known as a producer and founder of Big Beach Films, who have been responsible for producing such Sundance hits as Safety Not Guaranteed and The Kings of Summer, as well as a little movie called Little Miss Sunshine, which premiered at Sundance in 2006. That movie was picked up by Fox Searchlight, grossed $100 million worldwide, but more importantly, it was nominated for four Oscars, winning two. (Turtletaub’s company also produced personal favorites Lovingand 3 Generations.)

I had a chance to talk with Turtletaub about his producing work but mainly about Puzzle, one of a bunch of movies involving women having mid-life crises, which unfortunately I didn’t get to write more about in this Sundance article. The movie received solid reviews and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for a North American release, which it’s starting to roll out across the country. Kelly Macdonald is always great and gives another sublime performance as Agnes even though it wasn’t my favorite movie at Sundance, to be honest.

Anyway, onto the interview which includes a few thoughts on what Turtletaub and Big Beach look for in screenplays and filmmakers to work with.

Edward Douglas: You’re obviously one of the Sundance success stories, because you brought “Little Miss Sunshine” here, and that’s always a movie that’s cited when talking about Sundance. “Will this be as big as Little Miss Sunshine?” It’s like you set the standard.

Marc Turtletaub:Yeah, thank you. It was that bellwether, right?

It’s a standard that’s hard to match up to.

Turtletaub: Yeah, I know. Sometimes we think about that ourselves.

I assume you bought the rights for the Argentine film and had been developing it from the beginning? Had you always planned on directing it as well?

Turtletaub: Well, here's how it happened. It was originally developed by another production company, and Oren Moverman had worked on it and done a really strong screenplay. There was no director attached, and they sent it over to me -- I think they were working on attaching the right actor first, actually before the director and workings on the screenplay while they were attaching the right actors. When I got it, there were no actor attachments. It was sent over to our office from an agent saying it's a really strong screenplay, and I thought it was, and that's how it happened.

And you’d already been looking for something else to direct?

Turtletaub: I had been, and it's so rare to find something which is so well-written.

I imagine you're reading scripts all the time as a producer, so how different is it as far as reading scripts as a potential director? Is there a difference?

Turtletaub: Yeah, I think I know my strengths as a director, but generally, in our production company, we sort of lead from our heart. We look for material that feels intuitively like the right material for us. We try to make films which have meaning -- that's our North Star -- because we spend so much time and energy on a film, we want it to be something that has real meaning.

As a director, you spend even more time. Do you generally just plan to take a year off and produce so you can focus on directing a movie?

Turtletaub: Yeah, you say goodbye to your family. I try and remember who it was. I think it might have been Sidney Lumet who said that before he went to direct a film -- even though he was directing his films in New York -- they would have a going away party, even though he was going to come home every night.

How long ago did you actually find the screenplay for this one?

Turtletaub: Actually, it wasn't that long. I was trying to think of this. I believe it was around August of last year, which is really quick in this business, as you know. It was around August last year that I first laid eyes on it, and then began working on it.

So was Kelly already attached at that point, or no?

Turtletaub: No. No one was attached, and of course, the first person that you think on is the character of Agnes. I had fallen in love with Kelly as an actress years ago, with a movie called The Girl in the Café, which you, of course, would know, but not everybody else knows. I went, "Who is she?" not realizing she was the same person from Trainspotting, years later and very different role. Then of course, saw her a few years later in No Country for Old Men and then Boardwalk Empire, and you start to connect the dots and go, "What a really talented actor she is." So was thrilled when she was interested in the part.

And hasn't really done many leading-role type movies either. She was in this Christopher Robin movie last year, which was great, but it very low key, and she was the third credit after Domhnall Gleeson and Margot Robbie.

Turtletaub: It's rare to find a lead role for a woman who's not 22-years-old in a coming-of-age story. In a lot of ways, I think this is a coming-of-age story for somebody over the age of 40, which is unusual.

How about Irrfan Khan, who is also an amazing acto,r and he doesn't get to do as much stuff here as in India.

Turtletaub: No, the writing was strong and that attracted him. I loved Irrfan from his ... Of course, everyone's seen him in the larger movies, but I loved his performance in The Lunchbox, and then watching In Treatment, which is a good vehicle to see wonderful actors. So those two, in particular, excited me and then when he said “yes,” we had this wonderful international cast playing in an American movie. We had somebody from Scotland, somebody from India, and then Liv Hewson from Australia, so we had this wonderful cast being fleshed out.

Kelly is also so good at taking on an American accent, you might not even know that she’s Scottish, even when she takes on a British accent.

Turtletaub: She's a chameleon. Amazing lady.

You started this in August, which is as you say is very tight. Where did you end up shooting this? Did you get all the locations? I assume you didn’t do anything on a soundstage?

Turtletaub: No, we did half of one day on the stage. It was a 30-day shoot. We were shooting Yonkers for Bridgeport, Connecticut, and then, of course, New York City. It as smooth a shoot as I have been on in my 15-or-so years in the business. The process was really wonderful there.

As a producer, when you're working with directors, do you make a mental note when working with other directors, “I have to remember that for next time I direct?” You have worked with so many different directors, new and veteran.

Turtletaub: Yeah, I've worked with some great directors, and you learn something from all of them. You learn something from your mistakes obviously even more, but it's a difference between working as a producer and working as a director is [as] a producer – at least we are -- you're largely involved in working with the writers, working mostly with the director, and working somewhat with the editor. That's sort of your world, and once you're directing, of course, you're collaborating with 100 people, and so it's a very different experience.

Were you generally wearing two hats, on this or did you have someone else handling some of the producer roles you would normally be doing?

Turtletaub: My producing partner, Peter [Saraf], and I produce together, but we also had Renn Arthur and Guy Stodel, who had originally developed the project before it came to me, so it came to Peter and I after they had done a lot of work on the screenplay.

And Oren worked with another writer as well or was that also separate?

Turtletaub: It was a former writer that I never got to meet, so the only one that I worked with was Oren, and he was a delight to work with.

I’m not sure I realized they were in Bridgeport. I thought the family lived upstate somewhere.

Turtletaub: It's set in Bridgeport, Connecticut and she's a small-town woman who hasn't been to New York in years.

I used to live in Westport and took the train into New York all the time, and it’s a pretty long commute. You also have some shots in Grand Central and in the train, but I spoke to the director of “The Commuter,” and he told me they weren’t able to get any of that, and that had a bigger budget. How did you manage that?

Turtletaub: You accommodate their schedule -- you have to – and sometimes we found the trains would change two or three days before we were ready to shoot, and we had to say, "Okay, we can't go there. We've got to go out to Long Island," or "We've got to go somewhere else,” and you just have to be able to adapt. There were times that the subway was closed down in Grand Central. We were working in the atrium in Grand Central, and we wanted to go right to the subway, and it turned out they were doing some work there at the last moment and we had to go elsewhere. You just have to be flexible when you're making these small films.

But Grand Central seemed to be during working hours.

Turtletaub: It was during working hours. You get to section off. It was amazing how accommodating the folks were that walk through the big atrium. It was incredible to me. We'd say, "Could you go over here?" and they actually would do it, [laughs] because everyone wants to see a movie being made. But largely they just went on the stairs behind us, so they were all piled-up several hundred deep behind us on the stairs.

I don’t know what time you were shooting, but I’m not sure the commuters who want to go home at night would move for anyone if they had somewhere to be.

Turtletaub: Yeah, we didn't do it during rush hour. We probably had a group of extras that were sort of protecting Kelly as she walked through, but the security at Grand Central actually helped us to get onlookers moved aside.

I haven’t seen the original movie, so did you ever watch it after getting involved?

Turtletaub: Would you believe I saw it about two weeks ago? I wanted to finish the movie. I know Natalia, and I knew the movie was supposed to be wonderful, the Argentinian movie, but I just wanted to go in with clean eyes.

This is a general question, but you can talk about it with your movie. Does the script change a lot when you have actors like Kelly and Irrfan come on board? Does it change towards what they can do or do you work with the actors to make changes?

Turtletaub: To be honest, the script didn't change much. I think everyone was attracted, because we love the screenplay, and you don't often get a screenplay which is that fully-formed-- I don't-- so it was excellent. One the day occasionally, particularly Kelly would come in and say, "Could we try a few different words here or there?" But we're talking really minor changes. She¯ was smart about the screenplay. About the script.

Because of the nature of it, you have the Bridgeport section. You have the section with her and Irrfan. How did you work that out schedule-wise? I assume you had to film all the stuff in Irrfan’s house at the same time. How did you decide what order to shoot things?

Turtletaub: Well, we shot, it was a total of 30 days, so we shot four weeks in Yonkers. We were using Yonkers to double for Bridgeport, which included David Denman's work and the kids’ work-- Austin and Bubba--and then we went to New York and had roughly 10 days or so of shooting with Irrfan and Kelly and other folks in New York, so we broke it down that way.

That makes sense though, so you could establish the pattern of her life and then throw Irrfan in to have its own things. Since puzzles play such a large part in the core of the film, did you already have any kind of affinity for puzzles yourself? Did you have people around who were good at assembling puzzles to help out?

Turtletaub: I didn't. Of course, I watched a documentary on competitive jigsaw puzzling. We went to a meet-up of puzzlers, but I don't have a strong affinity. But to me, it was just a way to get into the story. At the end of the day, it's really about her transformation and how she transforms. How that ripples out into her whole family and to the people she meets. In terms of affinity, I would say Kelly got hooked, and there were several people on the crew that also got hooked on puzzles, and so in between takes, you'd go over and there was almost always, every day, a big puzzle, and everybody would add a piece here or there. Walk in, walk away. Sometimes I'd be ready to do a take, and we had to say, "Where's Kelly?" And she was invariably over at the puzzle.

How did she get good enough to pull off what she does in the movie, because she seems very fast.

Turtletaub: She's really adept to start off with. It's not fake. She really is adept, and then she got better and better once she got on set.

You have another movie at Sundance called “White Fang” which I haven’t seen, but if you were making this movie over the last six months, did you have to set aside other Big Beach projects?

Turtletaub: You focus. You have to focus. But White Fang was begun about two-and-a-half years ago, so we had been working on that in Paris and Luxembourg. And as Puzzle started to ramp up -- we didn't actually shoot until June of 2017 -- so the pre-production and all that really happened in 2017. But as we entered 2017 my focus had obviously become very strongly on directing.

As a producer, what do you look for in a script? Do you have a weekly time to sit down and read scripts?

Turtletaub: We do. We do weekly have a conversation of everything that we've read and if something rises to a level where we like it, someone really likes it, then several of us will read it. Usually, it works its way up to Peter and I, who are the heads of Big Beach, and we'll read it once we know there's enough folks that really got excited about it -- people we really trust. Of course, some things that are time-sensitive, we'll jump on those sooner. As to what we like, we like a singular voice. In terms of the writing, we're very much material-driven, so we look for original, singular voices, and when you think about some of the movies that we've made, there's often a unique voice. So the woman that wrote Sunshine Cleaning. The man that wrote Little Miss Sunshine. Those were really unique voices. And Loving, and so forth.

I spoke to Valerie Faris and John Dayton for “Little Miss Sunshine” and I wondered how you found them to direct that. I know they’d done music videos before making that film.

Turtletaub: Yeah, our producing partners Ron and Al, had recommended them and I can't remember because it was so many years ago, but it seemed like there were about 10 or 11 directors that wanted to direct the material, and so we interviewed all of them, and John and Val just came through. And though they had not directed feature, we'd seen their work, and loved it and loved their passion. And then it took five years after we ... we bought it and then we optioned it out to a studio. It took five years before we ultimately bought it back and John and Val stayed on the project during that whole time.

Going back to reading scripts, do a lot of the screenplays generally have a filmmaker involved as well or are you generally looking for scripts and not necessarily packages?

Turtletaub: Not always. Jeff Nichols was attached to Loving. On Little Miss Sunshine we didn't have anyone. On Sunshine Cleaning, we didn't have an attachment, but on many, we do. On Safety Not Guaranteed there was an attachment, Colin Trevorrow, so it's a mixed bag.

I want to ask about “Three Generations,” because I really liked that film, but then it was delayed for years and years, but now, a movie about a transgender teen would be very timely, so do you feel it was too far ahead of its time?

Turtletaub: I don't think it was ahead of its time. I think it was right in the zeitgeist when the movie was ready. And then it was delayed at the studio, who wanted to do continued work on the film after they'd purchased it. I think ideally, it would have come out perhaps a year earlier.

At one point it was supposed to come out right after it premiered at Toronto.

Turtletaub: I think it would have been the right movie at the right time, had it come out then. And unfortunately, it was released about a year, or year-and-a-half later. What was interesting about it for me, is that it wasn't just about Elle Fanning, who's going through the transition. But it was really three generations. It was the story of her grandmother, Susan Sarandon, who is a lesbian grandmother who said, "Why can't you just be lesbian? Do you have to go through this." And her mother, Naomi Watts. You've got the perspective of the whole family, which is what made it interesting to me.

Jeffrey Tambor's Transparent Announcement and More Shocking TV Exits

Transparent without the trans parent? Looks like it might happen. Jeffrey Tambor, who has come under fire with allegations of sexual harassment on set of the Amazon series, announced he does not see a way he can remain on the series.

“Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life. What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago,” Tambor said in a statement on Sunday, Nov. 19. “I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue. Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent.”

Amazon had no comment, and no announcement about whether or not season five will go on as planned as been made. Trace Lysette accused Tambor of acting inappropriate on set.

“Jeffrey has made many sexual advances and comments at me, but one time it got physical,” Lysette alleged in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “My back was against the wall in a corner as Jeffrey approached me. He came in close, put his bare feet on top of mine so I could not move, leaned his body against me, and began quick, discreet thrusts back and forth against my body. I felt his penis on my hip through his thin pajamas and I pushed him off of me. Again, I laughed it off and rolled my eyes. I had a job to do and I had to do it with Jeffrey, the lead of our show.”

A former assistant also leveled claims against the actor, which he denied.

Grace Park, who shot to fame on Battlestar Galactica, left Hawaii Five-0 ahead of its eighth season. Reports indicate she and costar Daniel Dae Kim were trying to renegotiate a higher salary to match their costars.

Daniel Dae Kim and his costar Grace Park left the CBS drama in between seasons seven and eight. In a Facebook post, Kim said the choice to leave was difficult, and that he made himself available to come back, “CBS and I weren’t able to agree to terms on a new contract.”

Season four of the NBC drama ended with Sophia Bush’s character entertaining a job offer in New York with the FBI and it sounds like she’s taking it and leaving the show. The show is called Chicago PD after all…

After four seasons on the HBO comedy, T.J. Miller is departing, calling it an “organic ending.” “Also, in a weird way, it’s interesting to me to leave a show at its height. It’s interesting to me to see how the show will grow and change with the exit of this character,” he told EW.

After just one season on the CBS comedy, there’s a shakeup afoot. Erinn Hayes, who played wife to Kevin James, will leave as part of a creative shakeup. However, from the sounds of her tweet, it wasn’t a mutual decision. “True, I’ve been let go from the show. Very sad, I had a great experience season 1,” Hayes said on Twitter. “Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.”

Jennifer Morrison, Once Upon a Time

Emma Swan is leaving Storybrooke. Jennifer Morrison announced she will leave the Once Upon a Time should it return for a seventh season. She will appear in one episode of season seven should ABC renew it.

Connie Britton, Nashville

Y’all heard the rumors about a Connie Britton‘s potential exit from the series once it was revived by CMT, but Britton herself downplayed them…for a time. Britton’s character Rayna died from injuries sustained in a car accident. She took to Instagram to pay tribute to the character and the show after the episode aired. “It has been an honor to be a part of that creation. And as I know she would want it, the show must, and will go on. Long live Rayna Jaymes,” she wrote.

Stana Katic, Castle

Castle without Beckett? You better believe it. After eight seasons of solving crimes and falling in love, Stana Katic was let go from the long-running series by ABC (along with her co-star Tamala Jones) prior to a potential season nine renewal, leaving Nathan Fillion‘s Castle to handle things on his own, should the series return. Following the surprising announcement, Katic released a statement to E! News, saying, “Rather than distract from what was an amazing experience I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”

Nicole Beharie, Sleepy Hollow

Yes, it’s for real: Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie confirmed following the show’s season three finale that her character, Abbie Mills, was really dead. As in not supernaturally coming back somehow should the show be renewed for a fourth season.

After 13 years with the show, Michael Weatherly, who was with the series from the start, announced he would be leaving NCIS. “He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as ‘Very’ Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today—the No. 1 drama in the world,” CBS said in a statement. “We thank Michael for all of his contributions to this successful franchise and look forward to continuing to develop projects with him as part of our ongoing development deal.”

TVD‘s fandom was left speechless when its leading lady revealed she would be exiting the show after six seasons…and that the show was still going on without her. Delena and Stelena fans alike were devastated. “I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime,” Nina Dobrev wrote in an open letter. “I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.” BRB, sobbing!

It was an overwhelmingly hard thing—at times terrifying.” Her exit shocked fans, especially those who shipped her character’s relationship with Michael Weatherly‘s character.

Katherine Heigl‘s exit was less than shocking, due to her headline-making comments over not getting enough material to warrant nominations and complaints over lying in a hospital bed for long hours due to her film schedule. T.R. Knight‘s exit was a bit more shocking, highlighting his lack of storyline and character growth in an interview with EW. Shonda Rhimes, of course, has no time for actors not wanting to be an attraction at Shondaland, so Izzy and George both scrubbed out of the ABC hit drama.

After so many ups and downs, Dan Stevens‘ Matthew Crawley finally landed the girl and had the baby…and then died. Stevens’ Downton exit riled viewers—where was the happy ending?!—and even pissed off his costar Michelle Dockery, but ultimately it did wonders for the show and Dockery’s Lady Mary.

Josh Charles, The Good Wife

Josh Charles‘ exit from The Good Wife is hands down one of TV’s best kept secrets. Yes, his death was shocking, but the fact that producers were able to keep it a secret is what really stands out. Star Julianna Margulies convinced Charles to stay with the show for 15 episodes of season five to craft a fitting exit. The powers that be explained they needed to kill him so his character wasn’t out there, always a possibility for Alicia.

Crystal Reed, Teen Wolf

After three seasons, Crystal Reed went to producers and asked to be written off the show in order to pursue other opportunities. Choosing not to give fans a heads up, the viewers were stunned when Allison died in her first love Scott’s arms in the penultimate episode of season three. “It’s an interesting thing when the actor says, ‘Hey, I want to try something new,'” boss Jeff Davis told us of actors leaving the show (Colton Haynes, Daniel Sharman and Tyler Hoechlin have all exited). “You to have to decide whether you’re going to say, ‘Can we convince you to stay?’ And as a producer, I don’t want anyone to work on the show who feels like they want to move on.”

Unbeknownst to fans, Colton Haynes, fresh off his exit from Teen Wolf, only signed a two-year deal to play Roy, an unusual move for the studio. Arrow then shocked fans by faking his character’s death at first, only to reveal it was a cruel joke. Still, it left the door open for him to return (which he has, and will again).

Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy

Mer lost her Der in an unthinkable twist. Patrick Dempsey was killed off, leaving Ellen Pompeo‘s character to move on without McDreamy. Series creator Shonda Rhimes cited a similar reason to The Good Wife for killing off the character. “The decision to have the character die the way that he did was not a difficult one in the sense of what were the options?” Rhimes said at the 2015 Summer TCA press tour. “Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith, and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That was going to suggest that the love was not true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie and McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy. For me, that was untenable.”

Mischa Barton, The OC

The OC without Marissa Cooper?! The thought alone was blasphemous at the time of the Fox show’s heyday…but then it happened. Rumors about whether or not it was MischaBarton‘s decision to leave swirled for years, but Josh Schwartz has come out and said it was a mutual decision made to shake up the series.
