No but that’s true.. all the names you mentioned why do they specifically target Tom? Even when they did target Austin at one point it was not near what they do to Tom for two years now (which btw they have more reason to target Austin since lily when from Timmy straight to him and they are both starring in the same movie). I know why but I’m just going to be quiet and not state the obvious.
Personally? I think it started with the rumor that Timmy also tried out for Spider-Man. 👀
The fact that he didn't get the role, and Tom DID, I personally feel like that makes some of Timmy's fans feel a bit insecure. If I were psychoanalyzing this that would be my theory lol.😅
Then, when Z joined the cast of Dune with Timmy, that's when Timdayas were born lol. But I still think the major factor stems from the Spider-Man casting.
Now they have to put down everything Tom does because Timmy didn't get the massive role that catapulted Tom into superstardom. That's just my guess. 🤷🏾♀️ I still say it's insecurity.
RE: Austin Timmy and Austin aren't usually going for the same roles. Austin's main "competitors" are Harry Styles (for some reason lol 🤣), and Miles Teller. Austin was up for the role of Rooster in "Top Gun" but the casting director felt that he was too young, and Miles Teller got the role. Harry, Miles, Austin, and even Ansel were all being looked at for the role of "Elvis". Most likely because they all know how to play a musical instrument and are musically gifted. Personally? I think the universe is JUST the way it SHOULD be. Miles was excellent in Top Gun and I can't even imagine anyone else in that role but him (he even LOOKS like he could be Goose's son irl lol 😅). And Austin got the role of Elvis, and I CANNOT for the love of God imagine anyone else, let alone Harry Styles or Ansel Elgort in that role ROTFL 🤣

Reasons 2021 West Side Story is better than the 1961 West Side Story
60 years later after the 1961 film, West Side Story. Steven Spielburg made this amazing musical adaptation that is easily better than the 1961 version. In honor of it coming to Disney+, I will go on a talk about how awesome this film is.
There will be spoilers from here on out
Lighting and Sets: I know it was more limited in the 1960s, but this film feels more alive and like there is more effort given to it. The lighting is beautiful and helps give emotion to the scenes through out the scenes. The sets are were more limited in the 60s, but in this film, it don't seem confined like the old one did.
Singing, Dancing, and Acting: It feels like there is more emotion put into their performances. Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Ariana DeBose, and Paloma Garcia-Lee all did an amazing job at portraying their characters through song and dance. Their singing seemed more professional and more powerful than before.
Songs: I very much prefer this version's song arrangement and performance. I love how Tony sing Cool, it suits him and the situation better to have it where it is and who sings it.
Dancing: I cannot express how much I loved the dancing. America and the dance at the gym were magnificent. Especially, and more specifically, America. I love the new choreography for America and how it moved to the streets of New York. Not only these two scenes, with Cool, I love how the dancing shows how tense the scene is supposed to be. As in this version, it is Tony trying to convince Riff to stop the rumble and fighting over the gun.
Anybodys: Okay, I feel like he deserved his own section because of how big the change was between the 1961 version and the reimagining of West Side. In the 1961 version, Anybodys was a tom boy who was misogynistic. She was a horrible person, especially because she did nothing about Anita's assault. If anything, she helped the Jets. Now, he is a beautiful character, inside and out. And I love how Spielberg made Anybodys transmale, which helped represent the trans/lgbt+ community. Also Anybodys has some also retorts to the Jets' bullshit. He is also way more fleshed out and has some personality.
The Topics: The topics of racism and xenophobia in my opinion were handled much better in this film. It showed how serious it actually. I felt like the topics in the 1961 film were watered down if not handled well. Another big thing about the topics was Anita's Assault. But I'm saving it for its own section. I also noticed how the Jets were transphobic to Anybodys, because in this film he is a trans male. It shows how much of assholes they are and what the trans community had to go through and still have to go through so much.
The Characters: WHEN I TELL YOU THE CHARACTERS WERE SHIT IN THE 1961, THEY WERE. Besides probably Anita, even then her character wasn't even that fleshed out. I get it's a musical, and at that more of an action musical, but they could have at least fleshed the characters out more. In this 2021 WSS, the characters have so much more personality and are better in general than the B-way and 1961 film versions. Even the main characters didn't feel complete like they do in this movie. Kushner did an amazing job with completing their personalities, even with some of the side characters, like Graziella, Chino, Baby John, and Anybodys. Also giving some backstory to the characters, like Tony and Riff's history, as well as Maria and Bernardo's relationship and backstory. Tony's character was potrayed so well, I hate Ansel Elgort because of what he did, but his character was done so well. As well as Bernardo, he was actually given a history to how he can fight. I did a whole other post about my rankings of the characters, so yeah.
Plot Holes: There. Were. Alot. Of. Plot. Holes in the original. They may have been minor, but still gave a lot of questions. For instance: Why isn't Chino that involved in the Jets? Why is Tony so hesitant to go and stop the rumble besides of Maria? Why is Riff so broken? And other questions. It fills it in for us, telling us that Tony had almost killed a man in the last fight he'd been in. Bravo Kushner and Spielberg for being able to fill the plot holes in.
Anita's Assault: This was such a tense, stressful, emotional, and vital scene in West Side Story. It always brings the waterworks and anger at the Jets for being so fucked up. In this, it feels so much more real, and so much more emotional. Just fear strikes into you, it also makes you want to pull a Tony and kill em- I hate it when there's S/A scenes in movies, but this actually has reasoning behind it. Without this, Anita would not have told the lie that Maria was shot and killed by Chino. I believe the Jets S/A'ed Anita because.
1. They're racist pieces of trash, so they already probably dehumanize people of color
2. The Jets definitely sexualized Anita because the part right before her assault, they made obviously sexual comments about her body and dancing. So even more dehumanizing her. Which leads to them seeing her like an object.
3. They felt weak and lost without Riff, he was like the glue that held them. Since he was able to bring them out of the dark and keep them stable even when times are tough. The Jets felt in power when Riff was leader, so they wanted something to control. They hated Bernardo and wanted to hurt the Sharks. Anita was Bernardo's girlfriend, and they knew that. So that happened.
So to conclude this section, the Jets are racist, rapist pieces of shit who I'd gladly hit with Riff's bat. No one deserves to be sexually harassed, assaulted, and or raped. A thing I loved is that Valentina actually called them what they are, and that is rapists. Also that despite Graziella's hate towards the Sharks and kind of Anita, she still tried to help Anita.
In conclusion, this is an awesome movie worth watching. The actors and actresses put their heart and soul into this movie. I hope this movie earns a lot of awards. Please don't let your hate for Ansel Elgort not make you watch the movie, it is an awesome movie worth it.

2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK #28
west side story. okay, so this was an EXPERIENCE. i could write many essays about different elements of this movie, it gave me so many thoughts and feelings and stayed with me for a long time after. i’ll try to keep the review short though because for once i am aware in advance of my wish to ramble endlessly.
i have seen the original movie, but didn’t grow up with any sondheim musicals, so my introduction to the classic was via @actuallylukedanes many years ago. that meant i had to rely on their memory when i wanted to compare this version to that one--we watched it together. i’m sure there were parts of the original i liked, but i don’t remember which now, because it didn’t become a regular part of my own viewing habits.
all i knew about this one going in was that they had created a new role specifically for rita moreno, that it starred oscar-winner and true fave ariana debose (who was my only real reason for watching it) and that i wasn’t familiar with the actor playing tony but that i had not encountered positive reactions to his performance. the only unsurprising part of actually watching it was that ariana debose WAS truly amazing, exactly as heartwrenching and full of life and color as i expected.
rita moreno’s role was way bigger than i had anticipated. plus i had no idea she was also an executive producer or that they would take ‘somewhere’ away from its original performers in the first movie and give it to her here. the layers she brings to it and the way the meaning changes...in her hands, it was painful but also glorious. i did not know that i wanted 88-year-old rita moreno executive producing and becoming the complex moral center of this movie while singing somewhere but i very much did.
and as for ansel elgort, he starts out being cute with rita moreno, but the moment he began singing...my jaw actually dropped. leander and i rewound and rewatched a few parts of this, and only a couple of them were ariana at my request--multiple moments were his performance, and we were in agreement that whoever gave me the impression that he sucked was just wrong. he didn’t have great chemistry with maria, but he sparked off riff like crazy (whether he was supposed to or not), so i don’t think he’s bad at that in general.
more importantly, he sounds like an old movie musical star when he sings--especially in the moments when they’re not blatantly autotuning him for some criminal reason. whenever you can hear him get breathing room to sound raw and have those little flaws that come with uncorrected singing, it was beautiful. in exactly the kind of way that makes me love musicals. (the last time i felt that way was when i first heard live action gaston, luke evans, hilarious compared to this, but true.)
the rest of the cast was great. riff was a special favorite of mine, the actor taking his relatively short resume and fighting to steal every scene he was in. brian d’arcy james as officer krupke continued his career of showing up in musicals in NON-SINGING ROLES which is just insane but i love him anyway. the actor who played bernardo really did have chemistry with ariana, which i enjoyed--it made their ending more affecting and her downward spiral easier to follow.
i loved the music, though some songs more than others. (the police station performance left me undecided, they were definitely doing a lot there but i’m not sure i liked it.) predictably, america was my favorite, but for every element of it and not just ariana--i loved the colors and the way it spilled out into the street like the people couldn’t be contained and anita’s charged give-and-take with bernardo. a great ensemble act on every level.
the ways they chose to modernize the musical without changing the setting were fascinating to me, because it really does feel like an older musical that just happened to use modern technology. i’m not sure what else i expected stylistically, but it was comforting to realize it would feel like a classic.
however, for me their story choices didn’t always result in coherence? it’s like, they wanted to be more sensitive and inclusive while also paying tribute to the original, but if you think the original needs updating you can’t both keep it and make it into something else. there’s a real tension there, and it left me with questions about what the movie was trying to say about race and violence and identity.
some of the changes seemed very cool while we watched, but by the time the tragic end arrived, treating it as inevitable felt like a let down. they put so much creativity into finding places where they could be kinder or more interesting, then barreled right for the same ending as though being a remake was enough to explain the characters’ ultimate downfalls whether it made sense for these versions of them or not.
anyway like i said i could go on about this movie forever. but my overall conclusion about it is that it was genuinely heartbreaking, which is the only reason i wouldn’t be likely to watch it a lot--i love musicals enough to wear them out, but i’ve never been a big fan of tragedies. it was also beautiful, though, (besides the opening shot which was bizarrely gritty and i’m still upset about it) and the performances were incredible.
i wasn’t expecting it to be a really good remake, and i definitely approached it more as its own film rather than as a fan of the original, but i loved it. i’ll watch it again someday, when i feel like big emotions and a sincere cry.
#okay this was still super long#but believe me if i had gotten into detail on even more characters and all the musical numbers and the other elements individually#as well as random things that stood out to me and what left me with questions...i would never be done#i'm thrilled instead because with this i am caught up on movie reviews! (the one i watched after this already has a review ready to post)#west side story#ariana grande#ansel elgort#rita moreno#brian d'arcy james#2022 motw#actuallylukedanes#i have the best best friend

West Side Story (2021) Review
West Side Story is probably one of the most well known adaptations of Romeo Juliet for modern audiences. I grew up watching this musical before even realizing that until I was teenager.
The music is iconic. The musical numbers are unforgettable. And the story is a classic.
So when I heard there was going to be a new film adaptation of the musical directed by Stephen Spielberg, I was excited to see what he would do with this classic musical.
And let’s just say he did not disappoint.
Now, I am not here to compare and contrast the two films. There are various YouTube videos and articles that can do that a lot better than I can ever do.
No. I am here to give an honest review of the film though I do seem to focus on three to four things. Spoilers ahead which is kinda odd considering it is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and is basically the same story as the 1961 film. You have been warned.
Here we go!
First of all, this is a beautiful film. This film immediately shows the world we are visiting for the next 2 hours. It is real. It is changing. It hits close to home. In that, I mean we see all this construction and the transition between old New York and new New York. This can be seen when we see the sign for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts which began construction in 1955 and opened in 1962. This theme of fast-moving change is constant throughout the film.
The colors in the costuming are bright and there is a lot of symbolism in that aspect. Especially in the ‘Mambo’ dance scene in the gym. The Sharks are in shades of blue and the Jets are in shades of red to show how different they really are.
The songs themselves are wonderful, familiar, yet sparks something new. Let's talk about my favorite song which is ‘Officer Krupke’. Why is this my favorite song? It’s just so freaking funny. In the original, the boys perform this in the street after they bump into the officer. In this version they perform the song in the police station where their audience is a prostitute. It was then I realized that one of the Jets was also in Newsies (Ben Cook who portrayed Race). Anyway, this scene was filled with comedy, athleticism, and is what we needed at that point in the film.
My least favorite song was anything that has Ansel Elgort singing. He was terrible. To put it bluntly. My mom and sister said it was like hearing cardboard if cardboard could sing. It was a huge no from us.
The biggest surprises include Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, and Mike Faist. They were the best part of the film. Their performance is the sole reason I would recommend seeing the film.
From what I can tell, this is Rachel Zegler’s first film performance and she is a delight to watch in the role of Maria. Her voice is phenomenal and my mouth dropped when she hit those notes. She also gives a lot of emotion necessary for this role. And seeing her performance when she gets hold of the gun from Chino is WOW!
Ariana DeBose is recognizable from the musical theater community as she originated the role as the “Bullet” in Hamilton, she was in Bring It On! The Musical, Motown The Musical, Pippin, A Bronx Tale, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Film-wise, she was in the pro shot of Hamilton, and the film adaptation of The Prom. Television wise, she was in Schmigadoon! as Emma Tate. Knowing all of this, she was the perfect choice as Anita. She had the voice. Her dancing was phenomenal. And I could watch her in this film on repeat.
Mike Faist (who, when researching for this review, was in the original Broadway cast of Newsies as Morris Delancey. Who knew?) is probably recognizable for originating the role of Connor Murphy from the show Dear Evan Hansen. I had no clue he could dance. That was surprising and he was perfect for the role of Riff. There was just something about the way he was speaking, and those little expressions he made added to the character.
But yes go see this film for those three, please. They are phenomenal.
Of all the numbers, my favorite change (other than the one I mentioned earlier) is ‘Cool’. The 1961 version, it’s about the boys cooling down after the rumble. In the 2021 version, it is after Riff buys the gun and is before the rumble. The placement of this song is interesting since in the original, you have a calm collected character calming down the group. Here, we have Tony trying to calm down Riff who is impulsive and wants to bring a gun to a fistfight. It’s more of an argument between Tony and Riff. The choreography is decent but we do see how strained the relationship is between these two characters. This is probably a great example of how to turn a group number into a solo or duet. Much unlike another adaptation that tried to do the same.
Really quick! I also like how they:
Added background to the characters like Tony and Bernardo
Why the Jets want to fight the Sharks other than racism
Gave Rita Morena a role as a nod to the original
All the literal symbolism
The camera work
The change in song order
The way the characters had an audience when singing and dancing
Had the actors speak Spanish without subtitles being on the screen
Having Chino take his glasses off to show how he has ‘turned’ violent
The bad:
Ansel Elgort
Overall, go see this film. Support these artists. You will not regret it!

I finally saw West Side Story (2020) last weekend, so I thought I'd write down my thoughts: Things I liked:
- Introducing Chino properly and giving him a more distinct look against the Sharks was a good move, because in the 1961 version it's really easy to forget who Chino even is half the time. Here he's memorable and has an actual character arc that mirrors Maria's.
- I really liked this Anita, I thought it would be really hard to replace the original one but she's a great character, she's sassy and fun and the actress had a very nice singing voice. She carried a lot of the scenes with Bernardo and Maria for me.
- RIFF. At first when we get introduced to Riff I was like, "Who is this sassy, lost child?" and didn't think he was impressive enough for the leader of the Jets, but he grew on me a lot and he really brought a lot to the part. I won't say I outright think he's better than Russ Tamlin because they play Riff very differently but the actor who did play him really reinvented Riff as his own. The Jets look a lot dirtier and more desperate in this version and the scenes where Riff explains his "world" as he knows it is shrinking and there's no place for him in it were heartbreaking.
- The dance sequences and music was of course fantastic - it couldn't afford to be anything less because of how iconic the 1961 version and it generally looked really good.
- The setting was very good and the whole subplot of the Jets territory shrinking because of the buildings being demolished was a nice touch. Gave the whole thing an overall more desperate feel.
- I liked what they did with "Cool", even if I was disappointed a lot of Graziella's dance numbers got removed because of it. But them wrestling over the gun and the Jets devolving into a power struggle between Riff and Tony was really interesting to watch.
- Also, yes, Ansel Elgort was really good as Tony and I agree with the overall consensus that he makes a much more believable ex-Jet than the OG Tony ever did. Things I didn't like:
- Valentino's character was both an unnecessary change and also a needlessly big part. Like at first I thought it was cute they had the OG Anita in the movie (tbh I was impressed she's still alive - she must have been in maybe her early 20s in the 1961 version), but after a while it started to get annoying how much she was inserted into random scenes. I was sitting there like, "West Side Story is the love story between Tony and Maria, not Valentino and Doc!" I mean, Doc's role is important in the story but he's only in a few scenes. I bet you anything if Doc was in the movie instead he wouldn't have been in so much of it. It felt really weird to have Valentino singing "Somewhere".
- On that vein, "Something's Coming" made me cringe - Ansel Elgort did a great job actually singing it, but the fact it's Tony prancing around singing it while Valentino watches him looking all confused just felt extremely weird. Felt way better when it was Tony singing it to himself.
- This is a very unpopular opinion, I know, but I...didn't really like this version of Maria? I know Natalie Wood wasn't the right ethnicity for the part and a lot of her singing was dubbed, but she just had this charisma and charm to her that the actress in the 2021 didn't have. This version of Maria made me think of a bratty child - idk if it's the facial expressions the actress makes or how tiny she is compared to everyone else but I just didn't like her. She had good chemistry with Tony and she's a good singer, but all the scenes of her without him I was focusing on anyone else - my eyes always went to Anita.
- I wasn't a fan of the change to Anybody's character. I always liked Anybody's in the 1961 character as a tomboy girl who wanted to be a Jet and didn't fit in with other girls (especially Graziella and Velma), being a tomboy girl myself when I first saw WWS, and I found this version of the character annoying. Also the scene where he takes on like four police officers was bullshit.
- I liked the 1961 version of "I Feel Pretty" way more - in that one it's just Maria mucking around after work, but in this one it's Maria skipping around before the job and all the other maids are like, "What the fuck?" It added to my dislike of Maria that she's skipping around disrupting the other maids because she's in love.
- I also thought "One Hand, One Heart" was done better in the 1961 version. I get the 2020 one took advantage of being able to go to other locations and the stained glass window setting was pretty, but there was something that added to the scene with OG Tony and Maria, pretending to meet each other's families in Anita's shop while as an audience we know their idealised version will never happen.
- Having Anita come to identify Bernado's body and then go back to Maria and sing "A Boy Like That" was SUCH a bad move because it's like, "Anita, you know Bernado killed Riff first, you literally saw his body at the morgue and now you're going to sing about how a boy who kills has no heart? Um???"
Overall it was a lot better than I expected but I think both movies had strengths and weaknesses. I still have a massive soft spot for Natalie Wood and Russ Tamlin, though.

how do you feel about Austin butler as Elvis since I think you said a while ago you would’ve preferred an unknown actor to take on the role?
i love him. obviously, i have him as elvis as my icon. from what i've seen in clips and trailers so far, he does an incredible job to embody elvis. from the hair to the voice, i have no doubt he'll be great in the film and i am very excited to see his performance.
i don't entirely remember making that comment but it does sound like something i would say. i think i might have just gotten frustrated with that leaked shortlist that supposedly named the final actors in contention for the role and how i knew every single one of them. degree of support varied - i love harry styles, i was meh about ansel elgort & miles teller, i had no real feelings about austin, and i don't remember the fifth name reported (i think it was 5 names total) - but i at least knew the names. now, of course, i realize it probably wasn't a "final contenders" list but just a leaked list of name talent who tried out for the film (i heard luhrman wouldn't even let harry audition bc he didn't want someone with an already big image in the role of this icon).
now i'm honestly fine with who they cast. i mean, from that shortlist i mentioned, austin is probably the actor whose star is the smallest. yes, a lot of us are familiar with him but mostly from small roles in kids shows and movies or that one mtv series he did some years ago. he's not as big a name as the others so although he isn't unknown, he could use the career boost that this film is already giving him (he's gonna be in dune 2! that's huge!). and i might have also been skeptical of his singing abilities bc i knew the others had some musical talents (i don't remember knowing about miles but now i see he sang for the new top gun so i guess he's decent), but again, i've since realized he was perfectly cast. he doesn't have to be an amazing singer, he just has to replicate elvis' voice, and so far he's done that perfectly. so i cannot wait to see him in the film.
(maybe i also just pushed for an unknown bc of that guy, drake milligan, from the CMT show i'd watched some of, sun records. bc he's definitely got that elvis voice down and is not well-known, but eh, it wasn't meant to be i guess. hope he sees success on AGT, lol)

The fact that Ansel Elgort was cast as Tony is still boggling my mind. Y’all thought that twink who possibly sexually assaulted someone was the best choice for TONY?? Doesn’t matter how good the rest of the movie is (also because the original is still better, more revolutionary, more iconic) when one of your leads has very little charisma. Also Spielberg didn’t even know if he could sing or dance when he auditioned him CAST MUSICAL THEATER PERFORMERS IN YOUR MUSICALS AND THIS WON’T FUCKIGN HAPPEN
the only thing the original did wrong was casting white actors to play people of color. Thats a major issue with it! I agree! but just because the new one cast POC doesn’t mean it’s automatically better (despite what tiktok says). The issue you were always gonna run into was that WSS the original film is iconic as a movie musical for a reason. It remains possibly the best adaptation of a stage musical to the screen ever (other than Oliver!, which is SO SO GOOD). The mix of editing and choreography is so hard to get right during translation (look at in The Heights, which had great choreography that is impossible to appreciate in the movie due to the terrible editing). The original WSS and Oliver! both represent how to edit and stage for the screen. THAT IS WHY THEY ARE SO GOOD, in addition to the fact that the source material is 10/10

End Game - Taylor Swift (Because the press would be all over them after the events of Supernova, and a lot of people wouldn’t trust Nova)
Ooh you and me we got big reputations, ah, and you heard about me, oh, I got some big enemies
Supernova - Ansel Elgort (I would also really recommend watching the music video cover by Ali Diane. In all cruel honesty, her singing during the chorus may not be the best, but you’ll understand why I recommended it when you see it).
I been waking up drenched in sweat, all my dreams full of my regret
(Sorry so many of them are Taylor Swift, I love her).

The Goldfinch
No one is probably ever going to read this, but here we go anyway. I’m going to start by saying that I’m not trying to sound pretentious so keep that in mind thank you.
Okay, last night I saw The Goldfinch. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t see all the terrible reviews. I’m also not going to pretend that I didn’t break down sobbing when the credits started rolling.
The movie itself, in my opinion, was beautiful. I’ve never seen something that hit that way before. I finished reading the book just fifteen minutes or so before seeing it because I wanted to know how it would feel if I already read all of the original source material. So I dragged it in with me into the theater.
I don’t know what it was, because there were many things. It was the scenes that the director decided to keep with Boris and Theo. It was the lighting. The music. Cigarettes After Sex playing in the background at a restaurant while Theo and Pippa talked about their trauma. All the little things came together and punched me in the heart. So yeah, I loved it.
I observed, not having to try at all, that no one else was there to see it. It was just me in an empty theater. Maybe that made it more personal, but I’ve noticed that, even though I was so excited about this movie, no one else I know cared.
To be perfectly honest, it hurts to be the only person you know who cares about something. Maybe it’s because no one I know read the book, but you don’t have to read it to go see the adaptation. So I found myself a little lonely in anticipating the movie coming out. I would gush to people how excited I was, and they wouldn’t really say anything, if they were paying attention at all.
The combination of no one else caring, plus the bad reviews, plus showing up to an empty theater all gathered to strike me in a way where I asked myself why. What was it about The Goldfinch as a movie? I read the reviews, good and bad, and, correctly or not, I’ve come to the conclusion that no one wanted to see it because they thought the subject boring, the reviews are bad because the critics wanted a movie that colored inside the lines, and that no one else was there either because of the above, or because it was late and apparently the elderly are the only other audience interested in seeing it.
Now, I need you to keep in mind what I said at the beginning, I’m not trying to sound pretentious, maybe it’s just angst, but I think that the majority of the reason for the bad turnout/reviews is because The Goldfinch doesn’t follow the standards of a typical popular movie. The plot cuts between different times, it doesn’t necessarily have action, and it’s too emotional for anyone to feel entertained I suppose. That’s not how I feel, those are just my assumptions. All the actors did a fantastic job, and the sets and music were amazing, but I think that it didn’t appeal to people because it wasn’t like a Marvel movie. Marvel movies are good, because they set you up with something you have to get through by the end, and there are multiple progressing stages of conflict that you have to go through to get there. Marvel is also a franchise. The Goldfinch is not set up in that standard way. You arrive in the middle of Theo being taken in by the Barbours, with little context at all. You are not introduced to any specific conflict to overcome, until Amsterdam for a short moment, and then the main characters don’t win anyway. They don’t get the painting back and keep it forever, they give it back to the Met. It’s a neutral ending, without the same kind of triumph as defeating a bad guy. It’s not about winning, it’s about realizing that life isn’t black and white, it’s weird and fucked up and complicated to no end. You think Theo is going to die, and it’s towards the end so you don’t put it past the director. But he doesn’t. And he doesn’t get the painting back, and there isn’t necessarily resolution. And maybe that’s why critics didn’t like it. To them, it’s choppy, sloppy, uninteresting, emotionally lacking even though I’d say that it’s very much the opposite. They came for Nicole Kidman, and Ansel Elgort, and Finn Wolfhard, and they got a strange movie about an orphan who ends up doing drugs and stealing a painting while trying to ignore his blatant PTSD and pining over a girl he has shared trauma with. That’s The Goldfinch. It’s plot isn’t linear. The cuts aren’t gentle. It’s pretty fucking depressing with minimal resolve. But that’s what it is. That’s what I love.
#The Goldfinch#spoilers#screw the bad reviews this movie is the most beautiful thing i've ever seen#very proud of all of the actors

i want to watch uncharted for tom so bad but i can not in good conscious support mark walhberg at all after all his hate crimes :/ why did he have to be in it 😭
That's fine Anon. You don't have to watch the movie lol. Nobody is forcing you lol. Everyone should do what they personally feel like doing, plain and simple, and don't let anyone make you feel bad for your decision. It's your own personal decision. With that said, I will say that if people are trying to avoid Hollywood films that don't have anyone working on the film (either onscreen or behind the scenes) who have done (or said) something shady in the past, then you will probably just not be able to watch too many Hollywood films in general, because let me tell you girl..... 🥴
The industry as a whole is NOT squeaky clean. I'm sorry, but it just isn't. 🤷 Sad to say. Yea, there are some good people in Hollywood, but there are also a lot of bad. :( I watched "West Side Story" even though it stars Ansel Elgort in it. I personally enjoyed the film. Nothing can touch the classic, but the remake was VERY well done imo. I know Ansel's scandal history (the little bit that I know), but in the end, I didn't watch the film for HIM...I watched it for the music, for the other cast members on camera who are relatively unknown talented actors/actresses/singers/dancers, and I also watched it to see the legendary Rita Moreno (who played the original Anita in the original film) onscreen again. Plus I just happen to love Steven Spielberg's movies just in general, but I know some would even say that HE has a scandalous history as well. So, you just can't win.
So overall Anon, sometimes people have to make their own personal decisions. 🤷 If you don't feel comfortable watching Uncharted, you just don't feel comfortable. I didn't care for the fact that MW was cast in Uncharted either, but facts are facts, and nothing I felt was going to change that. I will watch the movie, not for HIM, but for Tom and Tati. There have been so many shady things that have happened in these people's lives in Hollywood, and Hollywood itself is shady lol... Let's be honest. But unless I avoid most if not all Hollywood films, there's no real way to escape it. But if you choose not to support, I am totally understandable of that. I mean, Tom had to work with the guy lol. 😅 So I can't even imagine lol.
Sometimes I just have to make a separation. I'm not going to punish one actor for another actor's shortcomings. Like I said, there are shady people all up and through this business, and honestly we probably wouldn't be watching anything at all if you knew the real story of what people are like bts. 😬

THE FOREHEAD TOUCH
oh shit
well
that could’ve ended better
oh yay Boris is alive
AWWWW HES SAVING HIM
ansel has a dumb crying face
okay this feels like a tacked-on ending. i haven’t read the book but this feels really jarring and different from the whole tone so I’m suspecting it’s different. I could be wrong though
wait so if its his mom’s favorite painting then why’d she go off to look at The Anatomy Lesson again
also its weird that she didn’t take him straight to the goldfinch because everybody I’ve ever know with a favorite painting has always gone straight to it the second they step foot in the museum
ROGER DEAKINS??????

Is that (THE) ISAAC KING? Wow, they do look a lot like ANSEL ELGORT. I hear HE is a SEVENTEEN year old SENIOR who originally attended LUXOR Academy. Word is they are a REGULAR student. You should watch out because they can be PRETENTIOUS and LOUD, but on the bright side they can also be ENERGETIC and CREATIVE. Ultimately, you’ll get to see it all for yourself. [PEANUT, 24, EST, HE/HIM]
Hey everyone! I’m Dustin, but you can call me Peanut! Some of you might know me, but I think most of you don’t! I’m very excited to be back here at Luxor after taking a few months off from the rping community to recharge my batteries and refresh myself creatively. All of my former runs in the rp have been pretty short, but I think that this time is going to be the one that sticks.
But enough about all that! Allow me introduce you to The Greatest King since Elvis Himself:
- Isaac’s been an actor since he was in diapers. He and his brother Jackson started by appearing in baby commercials and televisions roles when they were infants, and Isaac has been a part of the biz ever since then.
- When they were 8 years old, he and Jackson were signed on by Disney to star in a Disney Channel series called Brady’s Brainwaves; a show about a young genius whose inventions constantly get him and his more street smart twin brother into trouble (Kinda like a live action Jimmy Neutron, meets the Suite Life ) but while the show was in the pre-production stage, Jackson decided to step away from show business, wanting instead to focus on the other things he was interested in. Disney decided to continue with Brady’s Brainwaves anyways, and the show was rewritten to center around just Isaac, with Jackson’s role being filled by a best friend character, rather than the brother of Brady. The show went on to be hugely popular (Think like, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody or Hannah Montana type of of popularity) and Isaac won the Kid’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Star in a television series three years in a row.
- At first, Isaac couldn’t help but get caught up in the glamour of being a TV star; it was hard not to when girls screamed your name everywhere you went, and you got to get paid for doing something you genuinely loved doing. For awhile, he thought the trade off of all the downsides might have even been worth it, but when Disney proved to be a nightmare to work for, pushing him hard and micromanaging every detail of everything he did, and he started to realize that the paparazzi following him everywhere meant that he never had any privacy, it didn’t take too too long before the glamour started to wear off, and he grew to resent his fame, and his passion for acting was starting to wane. What was probably the worst thing about it though, was his parents, who were too enamored with the money he was making them, and encouraged him to stick with it, no matter how much he hated it and wanted to take a break from the spotlight.
- Finally, after six years, Isaac had had enough. When his contract with Disney expired, he refused to renew it, much to the chagrin of his parents. He did not back down or give in to Disney, even when it was strongly insinuated that they would make sure his career faltered if he refused to sign with them again; he still loved acting, but by that point, he was prepared to never act again if it meant not having to work for Disney anymore, because the alternative of staying would surely kill his passion for it completely anyway.
- Those threats proved to be pretty empty though, because Isaac got all kinds of offers from big studios and big budget films to be the star, but his experiences had caused him to have a severe disdain and mistrust for the Hollywood machine. He turned down all major film and television offers, and instead accepted an offer to be in a off broadway stage production, which he ended up thoroughly enjoying. After that, he decided to focus on the stage, where he hoped to hone the craft of acting in it’s purest form. Stage work has been his primary focus ever since. He did eventually return to doing some acting on camera again as well, but only in independent films, and only in roles that he felt showcased his talent and range as an actor.
- After leaving Disney, Isaac also left his parent’s house at 14 years old. He blames them for the misery that he had to endure while working for Disney, and resents them for caring more about money than their own children. He went to live with his grandparents, and pays his parents five hundred thousand dollars a year to just leave him alone.
- When he was a Freshman, he decided to enroll himself and his brother Jackson at Luxor. He felt it was a good place to go to get away from the ever watchful eye of the paparazzi, and just live his own life. A lot of people still recognized him here, but in a school filled with the children of the rich, powerful and even famous, it wasn’t the biggest deal for him to be there. Plus, here, he and Jackson could be together, and free of their parents.
- In terms of personality, Isaac appears like he’s this huge goofball. He's always putting on a show for everyone around him, and seemingly loves to entertain. And while that’s certainly true to some extent, a lot of this is a facade/persona that he's developed throughout his life of living in the spotlight, always being expected to do something interesting and fun at all times, and he's just never really been able to shake that. He lives with a very real fear that if he isn't that way all the time, and he actually lets people see the person beneath the persona, then people will think he's boring, or be disappointed by the other parts of him that aren’t as exciting. As a result of this, very few people really know the genuine Isaac King, which leaves him feeling pretty isolated a lot of the time. He loves his brother Jackson more than anything else in this world, and despite only being a few hours older, he is fiercely protective of his twin, though unfortunately, the pair are not on the best terms at the moment, which has certainly been hard on Isaac.
- Isaac is just now returning from the filming of a massive World War 2 Epic in England; his most high profile work by far since the Disney days. He’s been away from Luxor since the end of Christmas Break for filming.

jeon jeongguk . cis male . he/him / graeme bae just pulled up by blasting dirty little secret by all american rejects --- that song is so them ! you know , for a twenty three year old actor , i’ve heard they’re really gullible , but that they make up for it by being so tenacious . if i had to choose three things to describe them , i’d probably say tousled hair , triple dog dares and a closet full of black . here’s to hoping they don’t cause too much trouble !
hello ! i’m deni ( she/her pronouns , gmt+9 timezone ) . i’m best reached on discord at gayfairy#6371 for plotting . below the cut is ... a ridiculous amount of keyboard smashing but it was a holiday and i was feeling inspired so !! i included a few TLDRs for some quick scanning . there’s also some plots at the bottom i’d LOVE to see . looking forward to writing with you all !
* ☆ ·˚ background.
you could say he was destined for the spotlight .
an only child , he grew up watching his parents performances on the stage , accepting their kisses and gentle smiles before they set off for tours around the country and left him with his cousins . sure , they were absent --- but they tried --- and graeme knew he wanted to be just like them . when his parents delighted in his little home-staged sets he presented , they quickly enrolled him in acting classes and coached him through first auditions , even moved back to korea when it was clear some american roles wanted to confine him to one note . after gaining exposure , graeme shared the screen with one of the biggest names in the american industry in a dramatic hit that led to some ridiculous fanmail being sent to him as a kid , then excitedly landed a role in a revamped science fiction film he was stoked af abouy !!! unfortunately , the film was met with an absolute brutal blowback from fans , some of that hot , petty anger taken out on graeme , and at thirteen years old , his parents made the decision for him to step back and focus on school . ( he still holds onto those spiteful letters------ all that hate from grown ass adults thrown at a child )
performing arts high school , but graeme stayed away from the public stage for a bit . worked on some sets as a tech to get a better idea of the film making process . kept a low profile occasionally caught by curious paparazzi at a basketball court or baseball game . recognizable , but not to the point where he couldn’t be seminormal . there were a few bumps in the road :: leaked photos of a beer at a high school party , couple of fake friends sliding in for clout , people pushing questions like when are you returning ?? how does it feel to ruin one of the most important films of all time ??? shitty . but , with the help of his parents , friends and coaches , graeme returned to student films to grow more comfortable in front of a camera . his official comeback was in the background of a friend's directorial debut , a lady-love drama critics salivated over but failed to earn is’ nominations . still , graeme’s name was back and out there . jumping headfirst into the thing that scares him , graeme’s slated for teen flicks , romantic dramas , action films . a diverse portfolio . people love a comeback . ------as if there was something wrong with what he did before .
TLDR. former international child star who took a break after experiencing a massive fan-driven backlash . pseudo retired , did the performing arts school thing . popped back on the screen about a year ago and working his ass off since . early career inspiration : jake lloyd , natalie portman , yeo jingoo
* ☆ ·˚ current.
suddenly getting all this praise and earning cash , living on his own in a sprawling city of work and sin . hasn’t stop busting his ass , no , but maybe he’s found outlets for all his stress in . . . less than healthy outlets . some of the headlines are way off the mark , some a little too close to home . either way , it’s not something his parents or his management company are thrilled about ( doesn’t he want to be taken seriously as an actor , they say ) and he does . of course he does . but what else does he have to sacrifice to be taken seriously ? and how serious does any twenty-something year old wanna get ?
late hours on dance floors , strips of things he doesn’t know the name of on his tongue , lips on any pretty , wanting pair he can find . he’s young , virile and at the top of his game . who can blame him ? it starts with a string of tabloid images , a rumpled and sleepy-eyed graeme leaving apartments that aren’t his in clothes he was spotted in the night before . zoomed-in , fan-cropped photos on twitter of hickeys and swollen mouths and unbuttoned shirts . america’s sweetheart ? maybe , but clearly not around the clock . him , scaling rails of hotels and dancing on top of cars . grabbing mics at clubs and taking over DJ boots at parties . twitter explodes when he moonwalks through the airport one time and baristas trend his insane coffee orders .
and even though he’s got his own name --- and a variety of different spellings , hashtags , and whatevers --- blacklisted on social media , every now and then he’ll run along a stream of grueling comments , petty nitpicks about his performances , his looks , his voice , his goddamn smile and it’s----- it’s rough , even for someone who grew up in that environment . there’s days where he’ll hole up in his apartment and refuse to see anyone , refuse to leave . the guy in the interviews with the wide smile and sparkle eyes is so , so far away and people almost forget that he’s human , too . he pushes himself out of that mindset , sometimes with help , but it’s always a shadow on his back , waiting to catch him at his weakest .
TLDR. tabloids gossip about speculated hookups and strange behavior . potential alcohol abuse . pushback from management and parents . anxiety towards social media . current career inspiration : ansel elgort
* ☆ ·˚ tidbits.
sporty as fuck —— basketball , soccer , skateboard , swimming , climbing . says he would’ve been an athlete if not for movies . fit as fuck despite a steady diet of ramen and pizza . claims to like horror movies the most , but he’s a total schmaltz snob . can hold a pretty tune well enough to pass . has a private twitter account for the memes , public accounts are all operated by a social media manager so he doesn’t have to read comments . watches college basketball championships religiously . has very strong opinions about scented candles . likes sugary drinks more than coffee but claims to be a connoisseur . loves biopics . punk and 2000s emo rock fan . gets anxious easily , suffers through interviews and avoids personal topics as best as he can . is rumored to be difficult to work with , but keeps to himself on sets save for a few opinions about blocking and lighting . pan as fuck and fairly open about it . mom and dad are chill , but don’t understand much of anything past bi . they get on to him more for his diet and job . when not on the court or working , spends free time rewatching anime in the safety of his bed in an threadbare pair of boxers , eating Doritos by the fistful and leaving his manager on read .
even his underwear is black . occasionally, he’ll change it up with a screen printed vintage t-shirt and wears whatever kind of fancy thing his stylist squeezes him into . otherwise wears by a black or white t-shirt , black pants and combat boots . seventy percent of his sneakers have sharpie drawings on them and he’s got a lot of holes in his ears and another in a place you’d be lucky ( or unlucky ) to see . loves dangy earrings and wearing his hair loose , a bit long with a mild perm . silver on his wrists and friendship bracelets from yesteryear but no rings . tattooed up ! recently collaborated to design a line of temporary tattoos . extensive collection of sunglasses . hit up a lot of music festivals in the past but that’s died down in recent months due to a busy schedule . swung his way into VIP passes before . he was a total Warped kid in the past , no shame . no longer does fan conventions because of a negative experience a few years back , and even fan meets are a little awkward , but he manages to push through . can’t drive worth a damn but he’ll kick your ass at any arcade game . occasionally , he’ll stream over twitch but that’s becoming less and less common . was banned from several dave & busters before he made it back on the screen . moody as fuck .
* ☆ ·˚ plots.
so . bonds . there’s a best friend who may not have been there since the beginning , but they’ve been there when it matters . the friendship is new , fresh , and maybe graeme shouldn’t be as dependent on it as he is , but he can’t help it . clinging to them like crazy --- let’s hope it doesn’t fall to the wayside . ( ? / 1 ) there’s several of his idiot friends who , after being stranded on too many red carpets , a hundred hotel rooms , and hours of press junkets , have learned to survive by snapchatting each other random dares throughout the day . ( 1 / unlimited ) there’s a few childhood friends who , like him , grew up either in or close to the spotlight and they have this , like . . . support group kind of situation . i don’t know . graeme checks on them from time to time , even as they’ve grown apart . ( 2 / unlimited ) he’s got some partying buddies who may not have his best interest at heart --- who may or may not stop him when he’s slurred out and whining about twitter trolls . some gaming partners he teams up with over stream , but lately they’ve drifted apart .
it’s such a cliche that his management’s set him up for a fake dating situation . if graeme wants the dramatic , serious roles , then he needs to show he’s a mature and capable young man . how else to do that than jump headfirst into a few awkwardly orchestrated dates with another hotshot on the radar ? ( ? / 1 ) but they’re not serious . so , he hasn’t stopped hooking up , or thinking about a one night stand that totally rocked his world . ( ? / 5 ) and ( ? / 1 ) media and fans definitely know about a few of these . the jury’s out for how they feel about it . then there’s his competition , actors in the same demographic targeting the same roles . it’s a tough business and they know it , but the press picks up on all these weird quotes and posts that twist shit into beefs . what other misunderstanding will cause the casket to blow ? ( ? / unlimited ) there’s some co stars on old and upcoming films . people who see how hard he works and how much effort he puts into what’s seen on the screen . they tough out hard days on set and the press circuits during promotion . see him at his worst and best . ( ? / unlimited )

This is rosethorne921!! 25 29 47, for the ask game?
ooooo boi thank u!!!! :) fun fun fun ok lets do it and i promise i won't confuse the numbers this time. as always even tho i did not confuse the #s i gave way too long of answers bc im a lil bit chronically indecisive LOL so here's too much about me that you never wanted to hear
25 - describe your perfect friday night oh heck i actually already answered this one here!!
29 - what's the most overrated movie? my 1st thought was avatar bc...... well jacksfilms said it lol. my 2nd thought was we need to talk about kevin because i watched it with some people i know and usually im the person to love everything i watch but like it just was so abstract for a lot of it it really looked like someone learned a bunch of cool ways to use a camera and instead of focusing on the story thats what so much of the movie was.... i honestly cant think of a movie everyone likes that i dont because i usually like movies in general lol this is a random tidbit but i think i lean toward the P in myers briggs and i feel like that makes me just more willing to take in content without immediately deciding if it’s good or bad i just, go with the flow and typically i don’t have too many qualms about it because i just accept it as it is....... which maybe is a dangerous thing. but also many times is good to be open minded
47 - if you could marry any celebrity who would you pick? oh why do u have to do this to me the amount of celebrities i would marry is simply too high for this. i mean immediately i think logan lerman or dylan O’Brien bc those are sorta the og celeb crushes........ but like oh no what if i married someone for their talent like good ol jacob collier or john mulaney. actually ya i think i’d go for someone i knew was quirky and funky and did cool stuff and could make me laugh probably over anything else which is how i live my relationships in general, so i’d say probably one of the last 2???? but tbh as cool as i find jacob collier i could see me getting a lil distressed or annoyed with him making everything about music, which im assuming thats something he would do. oh now im thinking more and if we were going for more looks i could also go cole sprouse or ansel elgort??? actually i feel like from what i see of those guys they are equally very smart sweet and intelligent??? but i dont follow them closely so idk??? oh my word this is getting so intense as u can see i like many celebrities. basically i would pick the one that would be funny and smart and interesting. cute is a plus. but i dont actually follow these celebs enough to know who best fits that bill sO basically id have to hang with them all then decide
be nosy if u want me to GUSH TOO MUCH ab my life

My 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2020 List
*Takes a deep breathe*
I can’t believe it’s 2020 and Tumblr does not auto-save posts in progress… I wasted 2 hours a few days ago writing this up. From now on, I will just type everything out on google docs before I copy it over…
It’s the start of a new decade! It’s time to count down my 10 most anticipated movies of the new year. After scouring the list of announced movies though, I did not find many that I was really looking forward to. A contributing factor to this is Marvel’s weakest slate of big blockbuster releases in a long time. With that said, I’m sure I will find many movies unannounced yet or flying under the radar that will be delightful to watch! But let’s begin with what we know:
10. Mulan
Mulan is a movie I am definitely anticipating to see how well or badly it is received. The Disney animated movie worked really well with Mushu’s humor thrown in. Judging from the tone of the trailers so far, it doesn’t seem like Mushu will play a role in this film. If people are hoping to see a more grounded version of the tale, then this might be it. But if you care to see a more authentic one, maybe you should go and watch the old movies based on the tale, where the dialogue is spoken in Mandarin.
9. Eternals
This is another film I’m pessimistically optimistically anticipating. I predicted that Guardians of the Galaxy would be successful because of the concept of a band of misfits banding together to save the universe would be a compelling dynamic to see on screen. The light-hearted humor by most of the gang also played a key role. This is another Marvel movie about characters in the universe that are not that well known. Eternals, in my opinion, will not have the same success. From what I know, the characters in this group have god-like powers; something that is hard to successfully implement into a good film. I’m imagining space opera level dialogue exchanges that can turn dull at time. But if they pull it off, this would get me really excited about the possibility of Norin Radd showing up in the near future of a future Marvel movie!
8. No Time To Die
I have to catch up on the recent Bond films starring Daniel Craig before I go and watch this. The trailer seems interesting enough with Rami Malek serving as the film’s antagonist. And then there’s the reunion between Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas, co-stars of “Knives Out.” There is also the scene in the trailer showing Ana wielding double guns in a sultry dress that is sure to look amazing during the actual movie.
7. In The Heights
Lin-Manuel Miranda. Check.
Musical. Check.
Story set in NYC. Check.
Tony award winner. Check.
The main song used in the trailer sounds incredible! I have a personal affinity with movies that deal with music/adaptations of musicals so this is really up my alley.
6. Deep Water
This is a movie based off of the book of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. From what I’ve heard, it has similar themes to “Gone Girl” which was one of the most thrilling movies about marriage that I’ve seen. I would say it’s no coincidence that Ben Affleck plays the male lead in the movie. Ana de Armas will play his wife in what could become a role that could land her some serious award nominations.
5. Tenet
While I’m not the biggest Nolan fan, I appreciate every film I’ve seen of his. None are terrible efforts. From what I can gather through the trailer, it seems to be a movie that will play with the element of being able to interact with the reversal of time as it happens. John David Washington and Robert Pattison lead in this blockbuster to come.
4. Black Widow
I believe all movies in the Marvel cinematic universe are made for a reason: to play a part in the building up to the ultimate endgame. In this instance, while the movie does take place before the events of Endgame, there should be something from this movie that should carry into the development of something in the future. There is speculation that Yelena Belova might be the one who takes up the mantle of Black Widow in Phase 4 and beyond. The thought of the talented Florence Pugh playing a bigger role in the MCU is exciting. Also, the score used in the trailer sounds soo good!
3. The Old Guard
It’s a film adapted from Greg Rucka’s comic of the same name and it stars Charlize Theron...and it’s about the mercenary dealings of immortal soldiers. In short, this film will rock. I would like to finish reading the comic series before this is out and so should you.
2. West Side Story
I’ve already seen the musical on Broadway and knew of the plot before that experience. What makes this my #2 movie on the list is how Steven Spielberg will add his personal touch to the story. It stars Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria. I have a good feeling we’re going to hear a lot more from Rachel in the future. Check out her song covers on youtube if you don’t believe me!
1. Dune
Dune is arguably one of the if not the greatest science fiction novel of all time and Denis Villeneuve (director of Arrival and Bladerunner 2049) will try to adapt this epic onto the big screen. The 1984 version didn’t go over too well with the critics of that year, but with the technological advances in film making since then, Denis will have a lot of tools to make this movie as captivating as Arrival and as gorgeous as Bladerunner 2049. The ensemble cast includes Timothee Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and Zendaya!
And that’s the list. I can’t wait to check back at the end of the year to see if these movies lived up to their expectations.
