Blink Dev Update

Hello!

So where have I been for the past 2 weeks? Honestly, after releasing the last update, the one-week break I took from writing Blink became 2 weeks, became 3 weeks, and so on. It wasn't really a planned thing, but the more that I came back to my writing file, the more I struggled to actually get anything written down.

It literally became me writing a sentence a day and then spending the rest of the week just rewriting the same sentence over and over again. I had the whole of last week off of work, where the plan was to just write a rough draft and get the majority of the next update at least written as roughly as I could. So instead of feeling like I wasn't making any progress, I at least had something to work on if I couldn't think of anything new.

The problem was that I sat down to write and decided to reread the last update so I had a good idea of where I needed to continue from, and I wasn't happy with anything in the last update or pretty much most of chapter 1. That then just spiralled into me spending the week analysing the chapter line by line trying to figure out what wasn't gelling.

And all in all, I haven't come to a conclusion. The last update felt rushed in parts that should have been longer and more impactful and too long in parts that should have just been set up. But as I keep having to remind myself, chapter 1 is just supposed to be a setup chapter to introduce the reader to the MC as a character and their key goal and an introduction to the world before the main plot of the story is introduced.

I haven't really figured out if there is really any way to fix that other than doing a full rewrite, which I'm trying to avoid, as I know it will absolutely kill any enthusiasm I have for writing the story. It would feel like a step back from trying to move the story forwards, and I don't think it would ultimately make that much of a difference in the overall pacing or quality of the game.

So with that in mind, I have started to write the next update. I'm going to write it with the above in mind and hopefully make the overall next update better. I want to at least get all of Chapters 1 and 2 done before I even look at doing anything like a rewrite.

To make a long rant short, work on the next update is continuing at a somewhat rocky but steady pace.

I also wanted to say a thank you to anyone sending in asks over the last couple of weeks. Even when I haven't been answering any, the inbox is quite full at the moment, and I'm going to start working through the asks from the oldest to the newest. So those should start being posted in the next couple of days. I'm also planning on doing dev updates again in between the updates; no real schedule for these, but they will probably be biweekly.

Writing Update July 2025

Hello everyone!

I took about a week away from writing at the end of June but now I'm back at it again. I've uploaded an updated version of chapter 1 (I know I know, when will the chapter 1 rewriting end). Even with the changes I've already made I wasn't all that happy with the scene transition when the MC is drawn to the mansion, but I couldn't figure out a better way to do it. Now I think I have, though :) at least I personally find the scene change less abrupt and jarring than it was. Rewriting chapter 1 in a satisfactory way has been really difficult, but I think it's pretty okay in its current state. I might still make changes to it if I come up with ideas to improve what's already there, but it won't be my primary focus.

I also fixed some continuity errors when a scene suddenly jumped from an interaction with M to your work and another one where you went to your mother's apartment even though you chose not to. The scene with M should now play out properly until the end, and the mother-apartment scene shouldn't happen if you choose not to go.

Chapter 2 is now sitting at around 30k words. I've probably already mentioned this, but it's a pretty branching chapter with different paths so it's likely going to be a long one. I've finished adding some short POV scenes from the supporting cast that take place after whoever you choose to interact with (if anyone at all); R, Q and G's are finished but I'm still writing A's. (M doesn't have one just yet, sorry M fans </3). I was debating whether I should include character POVs at all in the rewrite — on one hand it's fun to know a character's inner thoughts (just like when you read a non-if book), on the other I think it risks revealing too much too soon. Ex. instead of getting to know a character over time, you learn about their thoughts early on (you, not the MC) which can make the pacing of the relationship a little bit tricky imo. However, since character POVs were part of the original TSS, I've decided to keep them and hope that they add another layer to the characters. I'll try my best to handle them with care!

Since July isn't as busy for me as May and June have been, my goal for this month is to write at least 30k words and edit more of the existing chapter 2 content. I hope to update the Patreon-demo with the content I write this month while adding a little more to the public by August.

Changes

Hello everyone. This is mostly gonna be an informative post about the immediate future of this account. It's gonna be long, so it's totally fine if you'd rather skip it.

You may have noticed that I've been away from Tumblr for the last few weeks. I'd rather not get into detail about the reasons that led me to make that decision, but despite me doing much better than the last time I dropped by, the thing is that something has changed.

This account is gonna remain mostly inactive. I have notifs, DMs and comments to respond to and I shall get to them at my own time, but I'll hardly reblog any more stuff from now on. Maybe just once a week or something like that, and without getting into much detail, definitely not like I used to reblog stuff in the past. This is absolutely nothing personal, but something that I've noticed recently.

I need a break from the Mario franchise.

You may recall me mentioning that I've been going through a terrible writer's block that made me fear that I'd never be able to write again. It took me about a month, but I ended up realizing that my problem was that I couldn't connect with the Mario characters again. As a writer, I can usually hear them talking in my head, or simply their thoughts, emotions and fears, and that's usually how I'm able to find the words to write them in my fics. But, ever since I wrote Follow me, that's disappeared, and not even the bros or Luaisy, my favorite things to write/consume content about, could make me feel the same enthusiasm again.

So I've come to the realization that this was simply my body asking for a break. I needed to try and find that emotion and excitement in something different. A book, a movie, a song, a show, another videogame franchise... I was craving some variety. And I'm in the process of getting it right now. I'm reading books again. I'm replaying old games like Spyro or Miitopia which I love and adore. I found another movie, one that I fell in love with about ten years ago, that reignited my passion and love for it, and it's brought back the need and desire to write again that I so much missed and yearned to revive. It has nothing to do with Mario, but in case you're interested, you can go here. It's where I'm gonna be most active from now on.

Don't get me wrong: I still love Super Mario. Very much. It's a franchise that's been with me my whole life and will continue to be there no matter what. It was the first series I ever wrote fanfiction for, and I've LOVED and enjoyed every single word that I've written for it. I have WIPs that I intend to finish and share someday. It just won't be anytime soon, so it's totally fine if you'd rather unfollow me. You can still find my stories on my AO3 account and some others that are only available on Tumblr through the tags zahra's writing and zahra's fics. You can also check out zahra's headcanons if you wanna read my Mario headcanons, and even though I'm far from being a talented artist, I've also posted some Mario art that you can find through the tag zahra's art.

That being said, I'll still be supporting Mario content from time to time, only that, as I said, I won't reblog much stuff, and if I do I won't go into too much detail. I obviously want to support my friends, but I also don't wanna, how to say it... sound "fake." I don't want to fake an excitement that I'm feeling 70% instead of 100%, especially when it comes to my friends' content. Who knows, maybe whenever we get a trailer for the Mario Movie sequel, my passion will come back in full force, or at least that what's I'm hoping for.

But in the meantime, this is how I'm gonna proceed.

People that don't live in this area sure do love to have a lot of opinions on what happened with the flooding. I genuinely don't have the spoons to correct you assholes but the whole blame game bullshit is infuriating as hell when people are dead. The whole keyboard warriors who aren't donating or doing anything but trying to point the finger at people are wasting up space for those of us actually impacted by this shit.

We got phone alerts of flooding but the problem was that the river rose so extremely fast in such a short amount of time that people couldn't evacuate fast enough especially if they were asleep when they received those alerts as those were sent out at 1AM. My town and one up the road have a wailing alarm system that was able to wake some of us up because it was loud and so people were able to flee but this all occurred in the middle of the night. Most people were woken up TO FLOODING I their homes because in the span of 45mins the river had risen 26 FEET.

The conversation that you can have now is that Kerr County had decided against installing that siren system for years because they said it was too expensive even though we now have clear evidence that it works. It would have cost around a million to do. Quote from the news article linked below: "Kerr County was relying on the emergency alerts that blare on cellphones. Those alerts may not get through, particularly in rural areas with bad service or in the night when phones are off or when there are no phones around; the girls at the summer camp weren’t allowed to bring them. And some may choose to ignore them, because they’re bombarded by phone alerts."

The weather alerts were in place but that shouldn't have been the only warning. But the fact of the matter is that this was an event that happened extremely fast and left little time to escape. One can argue against having the RV park and camp built in the floodplain and I hope that is a discussion when this is all over. There should be a siren system installed because we all know this area floods and that it can be worse after a drought season like we had last year.

I understand that people need someone to blame but this is one of those times where it probably would have still been a disaster either way BECAUSE of how quickly things happened. Do we need better flood management? ABSOLUTELY. But there's only so much you can do when the river floods that fast at 1:45AM.

Here is a good article showing how Kerr County has been having this feet-dragging argument for awhile now. I hope that they can find a way to allocate the funds now but I am not hopeful considering all the damage they'll need to focus on first:

Finally got ahold of the audiobook of Penance by Eliza Clark and I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand I love the premise and I feel like it's written well enough to where I feel like the author isn't going to clumsily stumble through her own story and fall on her face at the end like the majority of popular thrillers. But also this story suffers from having someone who hasn't been in school for a long time attempting to write teenagers. The funny thing is that whenever I see a horrible portrayal of teenagers, specifically of zoomers its never like, inaccurate portrayals of slang and trends that most teenagers cringe at, it's extremely unnatural dialogue that I don't understand how even a 30 or 40 year old can't see how awkward and cringe and flat out bad of a portrayal they're doing. You can claim that it's regional differences, even if we were all teenagers once I still don't know what it's like to be a popular mean British girl, but I'm fairly certain that actual popular mean British girls don't go around describing themselves as popular mean girls. The funny thing is that they've mentioned several times that these girls (ok it was actually like one girl but she introduced too many characters and I got confused so I can't even remember the name of the girl who said it) are trying to imitate the mean girls in popular American shows/movies.
