i lean towards writing smaus since this is the first time i'm trying out something like that and i just love writing them so much (it's such a different perspective and tone) and it doesn't require the kind of detailed plot that writing actual fics does.

how exactly did riah and mal become friends? because I know maleficent and hades aren’t on the best terms. did that have any effects on riah and mal’s relationship, and were the clan/group roles affected? (sorry about all the questions, I find your au really well thought out and interesting :) )

Oh trust me, it doesn't bother me. I love any excuse to info-dump about my work, especially about my OCs. Anyone reading this, feel free to ask about characters. It makes my day.

Warnings for swearing, mentions of medical procedures, mentions of child abuse, and one mention of past rape/non-con in the last paragraph.

Mal actually had no idea Riah existed before the first chapter of Black Magick. Most of the Isle didn't. The only one of the four who had half an idea was Evie, and that was because she saw him for a split second before her emergency surgery (Hades bought him and Hadie along because a) they both have death manipulation just in case Polina isn't enough for an open-heart surgery, and b) because he wasn't leaving them home alone after what Maleficent had pulled three years earlier,) but she had no idea who he was and wasn't even sure if she had actually seen him. She never saw him around the Isle after that so she assumed he'd just been a hallucination from her terror and blood loss after her mother tried to carve out her heart.

Mal isn't quite friends with Riah yet, more like allies, but she's warming up to the idea of becoming friends with him because Jay is starting to get a crush on him. She respects him as someone who knows more about magick than her and he hasn't given her a reason to hate him, and that's enough.

Mal also has no issue with Hades. Maleficent kept her in the dark about everything, lied her way through what she did tell her, and never said anything about Hades other than he was banished for reasons she beat Mal for asking about. What Mal knows is that Hades has been there to save their lives every time one of them called Sanctum and that he's saved gods know how many other lives either by proxy (Polina) or directly. She knows that she can trust him enough to not have to supervise him when her crew members are most vulnerable, that he put aside the grievances he must have (he didn't have any against Mal) with her mother to save her, so he's cool in her books. Not to the level where she would trust him the way she trusts her crew, but she trusts him enough.

They all have a decent relationship with Hades. Hades was there when all four of them needed help (lung transplant for Carlos, broken skull for Jay, iron-bladed slash for Mal, and open-heart surgery for Evie,) and he treated them without asking anything in return or hurting them beyond what needed to be done, so he's cool. That's why they're okay enough with Riah to sleep near him despite him being the son of the Horned fuckin' King, who they all very much have a problem with, because it's clear he's far more like Hades than he is like his birth father. Riah helped Mal, Jay, and Evie within the first fifteen minutes of knowing them (admittedly also for his own gain (becoming Jay's finder in the limo to stop their magic)) and he never gave them any reason to not trust his judgment after that, so he's cool in their books. They also see how he treats Claudine, how Claudine Frollo, famous for not trusting anyone, trusts him without hesitation, so he must be a good person. Hades is why they didn't grab their knives the second he walked into the limo, and Riah is why the knives stayed put away after that.

The only relationship he's really affected is the one that used to be between Mal and Uma. Maddy "let it slip" that Uma had a secret brother (Uma, for all the time she spends near Riah, considers him a brother, and he considers her a sister) and, when Uma refused to tell Mal who her secret brother was, it escalated until their relationship ended. For the record, Mal never dumped shrimp on Uma because that was a beyond shitty thing to do. But Mal doesn't yet know that Riah is the secret brother so it hasn't really affected how she feels about him.

He didn't even affect the "relationship" between Maleficent and Hades. He's used as a bargaining chip to get Hades to comply, sure, but if he wasn't, it would be Hadie. Considering that Hadie was seven when Maleficent's men raped and attempted to beat Riah to death, Riah almost sees what happened to him as a good thing. Again, Hadie was seven and happy. Riah was ten and already disabled from his curse. What happened to him is just one more thing in the extremely long list of reasons Hades, Persephone, Demeter, Hermes, Thanatos, and every single god or god-like on Exile hates Maleficent. The Court of the Underworld has already got a verdict for her soul and trust me, it ain't gonna be pretty.

yessssss ways to be wicked is a favorite of mine too, and all of the marlos 😌 i hadn't expected those marlos moments when i first started to watch descendants 2 but now they're some of the most iconic parts of the movie. i totally vibe with mal's wardrobe too. hmm do you have any favorite tropes or such for descendants characters? one of my favorite tropes is anything to do with magic, like witch evie.

Yasssssss, you have excellent taste Anon! WTBW appreciation time is upon us folks! I think it is one of, if not my actual favourite, group number. The vibes are just *chef's kiss* and exactlyyyyyy, the Marlos really snuck up on us and I think it really opened my eyes to all of the Marlos interactions, it definitely hooked me in and I think from just looking at my blog and my fics everyone can see how much I love the Marlos dynamic.

I love SO MANY tropes honestly, it's hard to pinpoint specific ones but I'll try my best. (Note, I think these are more headcanons and thoughts than tropes so sorry :']))

- Jock!Mal is a beloved of mine, I firmly believe that if Lonnie can join the fencing team then Mal could've joined the tourney team, because I would've loved to see Carlos and Evie bonding over chemistry y'know.

- I mean, I do love a good best friends to lovers...and I think that fits super well with many of my descendants faves honestly. All of the "and they shared a bed" but it doesn't faze any of them because they're so used to all cramming into one bed that it doesn't make a difference to them.

- Anytime they're sharing clothes, like borrowing Jay's hoodie, Jay giving Carlos his beanie, Evie draping a scarf around a grumpy Mal. Mal or Carlos wearing an oversized sweater or hoodie gives me such life, it's such a soft and perfect image But also I think it's because here are these kids that have only ever know to take and to only be out for themselves, that having feelings and caring about people is wrong. But here they are wanting to share something for these people who are the most important to them, wanting to share it. I just...I can't articulate what I mean properly but this!

- Character A: Yeah, I can’t make you do *thing,* but they can - character B: *smirks* - it works with any of them, I just. One pout from Evie or Carlos and they're done for.

- Evie playfully reprimanding the others for swearing but then she cusses ALL THE DAMN TIME. Like she mutters snarky shit under her breath and one time after a conversation with "King" Adam she told him to fuck off and then ran away. Just Evie being allowed to swear and be rude and be bitchy, I love bitchy!Evie. Because for most of her childhood she's been made to act a certain way, she's not been allowed to be angry, she's been taught that she must act a certain way and then when getting to Auradon she is forced into remedial goodness and she is stopped from acting the way she wants to act without consequences. And, I am not a fan of constantly shoving Evie into this "mom friend" role, when clearly that belongs to Jay, like Evie isn't always repremanding them - she can also cause chaos and be a bitch, whilst also being one of the nicest people you will ever meet. It's the duality she deserves.

- Always a sucker for protective Rotten four, especially protective Carlos because people seem to write him off as "weak" but when Carlos is mad? Like he's canonically the only one who stood up to their parents in the video chat scene?! Also how he is with Mal in D2, like if looks could kill RIP ben :'))) but also, I just love the idea of Carlos reigning hell fire on people for hurting the three people he cares about most

- That weapon trope where the person is like "hand over all of your weapons" and then keeps glaring at them until they've handed over ever weapon including the little piece of barbed wire in their pocket and taking out hairgrips. I'm sorry but Evie would have so many places to hide her weapons, all the pockets!!! Jay straight up trying to sneak weapons into his hat and everybody shrieking when Carlos pulls a dagger from his boot.

- All the magic! Mal has magic, Evie has magic, Jay has magic. EVERYONE GETS SOME MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just like the ideas of them all exploring their magic and my precious magical beloveds and Carlos supporting their magical endevours by encoruaging pranks and experiments with magic!!!

- Dragon Mal! But also, like her skin glittering and her being able to fly even when she's not fully transformed, her having little horns and scales along her arms. More of Mal and her dragon qualities and exploring those sides of her even, like partial transformations. Can she shapeshift into a smaller dragon? Do her scales change colour when her emotions do? When she's mad do the scales on her arms get more prominent? All of the dragon lore.

- Similarly, all the fae lore too. Like, I recently wrote a thing where I mentioned that Mal, being a fae or part-fae; doesn't get cold like the others, not that she doesn't get cold, but that it doesn't affect her as much as it does the others. like Mal's teeth being like little fangs, and her exploring her fae roots and what that means for her.

I'm in a deep case of love with Cursed and Call It A Night series of @clints-lucky-arrow, especially the first bc has such a beautiful gothic atmosphere and have dark!Zemo, which I really adore.

There's also the marvellous From Sokovia With Love of @nbraraeaves, I don't have enough words to say how much I love the plot of this one, and here we have another one with a bit of a dark! Baron Zemo *sigh* I just love this man being a lil evil.
