anthony seems to be more impressed than she was. it reminds her of the time when she was recently introduced to mr. tallmadge’s father and he let her know that he does not hold any distain for her country, despite wars in the past. it only confused her. but it was better to be confused by reverend tallmadge and have him right in front of her, then have no idea as to his whereabouts. anthony makes a comment, congratulating him for his service. they are from two different countries. is it strange to thank someone for their service if it isn’t for your homeland? she doesn’t know. anthony doesn’t seem to either.
❝ mr. tallmadge has also attended university, ❞ johanna says, as innocently as possible, but there is still a pointed edge to her tone. ❝ perhaps, that will come in handy. you should ask him about it. he does adore to talk about his beloved yale. ❞ when anthony looks back up to seemingly actually congratulate him, she blurts out, ❝ we should go now. as soon as possible. right? ❞
there are things she needs to pack and she’d nearly forgotten about it until she catches a glimpse of her case in the corner of the room. packed and ready for her whenever they wanted to elope. johanna nearly drags anthony with her to pick it up. he insists on carrying it for her, which she gave him a little smile for and throws another look over her shoulder at mr. tallmadge. she told him she was right.
readjusting her hold on her lover, johanna nods towards mr. tallmadge. ❝ lead the way then. the headmistress doesn’t care and i don’t intend on returning. ❞ hopefully, she will soon be a married woman. looking up at anthony, she smiles again. ❝ i suppose you haven’t seen much of this place aside from this room. ❞ with her free hand, she opens the door, ready for mr. tallmadge to lead them to his coach.
All at once, Johanna’s sharp edge returned and Ben regarded her with a hint of annoyance. What was with her and her damnable fixation on his time at Yale? Why was she intent on squabbling when his father’s life could be in danger?
Opening his mouth to finally condemn her behavior -- enough was enough -- grace came in the form of Johanna’s own mouth once she posed her query. Momentarily thrown, he lowered his guard again and nodded. “Preferably as soon as possible, yes,” he agreed. “We have many days of travel ahead of us, so I’m certain we’ll have plenty of time to become better acquainted.”
Anthony was truly suitable -- a decent man, from what he could gather -- but it was Johanna whom he dreaded being saddled with for that duration. The last time they’d been stuck together onboard a voyage, she’d needled and goaded until he’d screamed at her about Sarah; until he’d confessed his ugliest truths and then retreated into the shadows of his heart. He could not, would not do that again.
Folding his arms, Ben sourly waited for Johanna to fetch her things. Thankfully, Anthony stepped in to assist, and ignoring her smug expression, Ben headed out into the hall and assured them, “I’m afraid there’s not much to this place beyond your room, so I wouldn’t imagine getting too attached.”
As the three of them trudged down the steps, he saw the headmistress’ questioning expression at the third party -- clearly, she had never seen Anthony before -- and even as she started to ask questions, Ben carelessly threw another five shillings at her, but this time in such a rough, careless manner that the coins went skittering. The woman (naturally) dove for them amidst her greed, much like a dog hunting for scraps, and Ben’s expression grew more severe as he led his companions out into the foggy night.
“First and foremost, Johanna, I will need to know any and all of Turpin’s friends,” he told her. “I highly doubt that snake did this of his own hand, so I intend to interrogate as many of his acquaintances as impossible.”
The unspoken word of duress lingered in his statement, and as the conductor of the coach opened the door and took Johanna’s bag from Anthony, Ben warily glanced over their shoulders to make certain they were, indeed alone, and then encouraged everyone to climb inside.

For the 'send a hc' meme:
1.) for their modern verse when they get to the US I'm fairly certain Johanna is the first to kind of call out that New York Sucks(TM) noted, the west side is no longer there so the area of NYC that Riff lives in is probably on the lower east side in one of the last areas that is very much public housing. also the nature of gangs is different so I'm fairly certain Riff is a drug dealer in this verse. That being said i think they make a plan to not stay in new york just in case the judge's arm is very long and both agree to go back to the state that Anthony is from because lbr Anthony would have only said good things about it. Anthony's family was stationed in new york for a very long time i feel, since it had to be enough time for riff to be very good friends with him since he replaces Tony in our verses.
2.) in their Victorian verse i still think they eat most meals with the rest of the farm even after getting their own house until Johanna can cook better and baby number 2 comes along. They got pressured into a house warming dinner party before they even had a stove or dining room table, but it ended up being a lot of fun.
i have sinday thoughts too since that trauma is a lot for them to process and grow together through, but atm i don't have any deep hcs, just fluffy and positional ones. not sure how appropriate that is to send through the inbox XD sorry!
ugly mobile post because this can’t wait. 1. oh, absolutely. i think that this is when johanna realizes that she just doesn’t like living in big cities either. there’s too many people and she doesn’t feel safe. she’s going to move them to a little middle-of-nowhere town where it’s big enough for them not to know everyone because she’s still paranoid but small enough to not get overwhelmed. since communication is a lot easier, she stays in touch with anthony’s family ( she didn’t get to meet all of them but they’re what’s left of him ). johanna had started schooling by the time turpin found out about anthony and their plans to elope so she wants to finish her schooling and get a job. once she finds out what riff does for a living, she wants him to stop because what if he gets arrested? also she just doesn’t like it. once turpin is dead, she inherits his money so while they can get by on what she makes and that money for awhile, she will help him find a new job.
i image that anthony was born in an east coast state (i’m thinking massachusetts? lowkey going off of vibes but), lived here until he was five or six which for him is enough time to fall in love with a place - even if he was just a kid, his family moved to new york on his dad’s new assignment and grew up there alongside riff until they moved to london.
2. it’s probably going to take awhile for johanna to become better at cooking because no matter what, she isn’t going to be good at it. a lot of trial and error. she still burns a lot of it. she still undercooks things. it’s probably good that they keep eating at the house for that reason and while she doesn’t like eating in front of a lot of people, they distract her enough to get her through it. she’ll be upset about the surprise housewarming party at first because shouldn’t they be giving them a housewarming party? they’re the ones trying to move into a house with a three year old and they expect them to throw the party in the midst of all the chaos? but johanna likes that she gets to do something that she’s never been able to do before. also if baby number two is a girl, she is going to insist her name is sophie because if he has a family name they can use, why not use it? it helps that it’s pretty.
#no but send those to me via ims#I’m off and on flights all day and I don’t know if half of my messages are going through lately#but I’ve had some thoughts too#nothing too detailed because I’m not comfortable with it but yeah#mobile tag.#heygutlcss

@demurc sent: [ BACK ]: sender, noticing a strand of hair fall from the receiver’s hairdo, carefully tucks the strand back behind the receiver’s ear.
she hasn’t look at herself in a mirror. when she passed a window earlier, johanna caught a glimpse of her reflection. the most she has allowed herself to look at her own face. after the asylum, her imagination has been left to wonder about how she’s looked. that is enough. even her own wedding isn’t enough of an excuse to look in a mirror. not that it’s really a wedding. this plan has become something between an actual wedding & an elopement. she & anthony were meant to get married weeks ago. but with everything, it didn’t happen.
anthony has been good to them both. just as johanna promise valerie he would. he lives off a sailor’s salary yet he paid for two room as to not soil her reputation ( not that johanna has anything of a reputation now, he is simply too good for her ). she & valerie share one room. anthony is in the room right beside theirs. perhaps, johanna is in his room more often than a lady of her status should have been. not that their neighbors talked. there was nothing to discuss except for the strangeness of their situation.
but now they’re finally getting married. just as johanna told valerie in the asylum. just as she dreamed about for nearly a year. valerie is here to see it. her first & only friend ( could anthony count if he’s also the man she’s marrying? ).
❝ oh, ❞ she whispers as valerie tucks the strand of fallen hair back into place. johanna never would have noticed. through the thick stress that sits in the pit of her stomach to buzzing thoughts, checking her hairstyle hadn’t occurred to her. johanna offers a smile as a thank you, the words too heavy in her throat. ❝ you’re certain you’re alright with being the witness? ❞ not that being a witness has any real burden to do with it, but she’s already worried as it is.
#no thoughts just valerie being the witness for jo's wedding#*❈ ‣ ❝ 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒔 ❞ — ( interaction. )#*❈ ‣ ❝ 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆 ❞ — ( v. post. )#demurc
