Jax sat watching camera footage of Zobelles daughter getting yanked into a van as she was walking down the street. "I don't recognize the van. I have no idea who took your kid" he stated as he shook his head looking Zobelle in his eyes.
"If anything happens to my precious Polly I will kill you slowly in front of your sister and what I inflict on her will be a thousand times worse." snarled Zobelle as he got in Jax's face."I wouldn't endanger my sister or my men like this" stated Jax firmly his icy eyes flashing as he stood up shoving Zobelle.
Zobelle shot him one more glare before stalking out of Jax's house. Jax rubbed his face before turning to Chibs and Opie. "They wouldn't have right?" he questioned his eyes moving between the two. Neither man spoke as they shared a glance with each other. "I mean Half was angry and he skipped town the day after your last meeting with Zobelle. He left his kutte" replied Chibs quietly with a shrug."Rat dipped a few days later and Bishop said Juice took off as well." replied Opie as he sighed and took a drink of his beer.
Jax slumped down into a chair as he considered their words. "Juice and Half I get, as close as they and Rocky are. Rat though makes no sense".
"He might just be a coincidence" stated Chibs. "I agree the boys and Rocky being close but kidnapping a innocent child is a bit far fetched with their personalities. Also Rocky wouldn't forgive them if she found out."
Jax nodded. He agreed with Chibs but something was still eating at him. Leaning towards the computer on the table he pressed play on the footage one more time. "Shit" he muttered before grabbing his phone.
***
"So Jax thinks she snuck out last night and helped kidnap the daughter of the guy who bought her? That she's been secretly sneaking off for the last two months and that they have this girl somewhere around here?" stated Gilly as he sat thinking over what Bishop had just told him.
"Desperate people do desperate thing" replied Bishop as they both watched Rocky and Coco walk out of the clubhouse. "She's not though. She's completely safe here. Would make more sense for her to runaway than to go back to Charming and help kidnap someone" stated Gilly.

Thatâs Christmas To Me| Julie and The Phantoms Cast
Dream-a-little-bigger-xâs Countdown to ChristmasÂ
Day 4Â
A/N: I got so excited when I saw this one was the next one I had to write! I hope you enjoy! I also wanna thank @calamitykatyâ, @vicesvsvirtuesfanficâ, @vrthngiwntâ and @bright-molinaâ for letting me pick your brains and bounce some ideas off of you. I love you loads!Â
Pairing: Platonic! JATP Cast x fem!reader
Summary: 2022, season 2 was about to be released on Netflix and the cast was invited to promote the show on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. A dream come true. When the host asks them for their favorite holiday memory together, the cast immediately flashes back to that time at the Christmas Markets.Â
Song(s) used: Thatâs Christmas To Me - Pentatonix | Happy Xmas (War is Over) - Echosmith ft. Hunter Hayes
Warnings: Spiked hot chocolates, but no one gets drunk and no one drinking is underage.Â
Words:Â 3,970
Checking her outfit in the full-length mirror once again, y/n sighed nervously. All dressed out to the max for her very first talk show. Her styling team had outdone themselves once again. The gold flared pants, the white satin button down shirt and the white heels just made her feel so fabulous.Â
Though she couldnât deny the fact that she was nervous. She was going on a live show, not any live show, but the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, nonetheless. Her family watched that show religiously every single night. That thought did not calm her down either.Â
A soft knock made her snap out of her thoughts and turn around to find Madison in the doorway with an excited smile on her face. âYou look gorgeous!â she exclaimed excitedly and ran up to her newest best friend, engulfing her into a tight hug.Â
She was sporting a gray glittery jumpsuit with black pumps strapped on her feet, her makeup done beautifully and her natural curls flowing over her shoulders with bejeweled clips pulling it out of her face.Â
âSo do you!â y/n retorted with the brightest smile she could muster, though Madison could see right through her and squeezed her hands reassuringly. âMy heart is thumping.â The words came out in a whisper as though she was telling a secret.Â
âSo is mine, but we can do this. We got each other, okay?âÂ
Y/N and Madison had gotten along straight away the first day y/n came to set. It was nerve-wracking to weasel yourself into a tight group of cast members whoâve already spent two years working together, but they made it so agreeable. The first day, Madison and Owen came up to her and started bombarding her with so many questions about herself and her character. All she knew about the latter was that sheâd be Reggieâs love interest and the villainâs niece who worked for him to try and get Reggie, Luke and Alex into his club. Which of course, would not work out as y/nâs character would fall for the bassist too.Â
The entire cast welcomed her into their group straight away and the whole process became so enjoyable to the point where it just didnât feel like work anymore. It just felt like spending time with friends and trying to memorize words and songs at the same time. It was weird. But so much fun. And now, they were able to finally promote said season.Â
âMadison, y/n, time to go,â one of the show runners said to them when he passed y/nâs dressing room. The two girls nodded and after a simultaneous deep inhale and exhale of stress, they made their way to the hallway where the boys were waiting.Â
Charlie and Jeremy offered y/n a wide smile to ease her nerves a little before Charlie held out his hand in front of him. âWe got this. Legends on three?â The others nodded and, with a content smile on her face, y/n placed her hand on top of Charlieâs.Â
âOne,â said Charlie.Â
âTwo,â Jeremy and Madison added in unison.Â
âThree!â Owen and y/n finished and all five their hands went up in the air as they yelled out âLegends!â Though it was scary, y/n knew she had four amazing people that would guide her through it.Â
âPlease, welcome the cast of Julie and The Phantoms!â Jimmy introduced them and, while the Roots played the infamous intro song, the cast walked through the red curtain. Madison and y/n ahead, holding one anotherâs hands as to not fall in their heels, then followed Charlie, Jeremy and Owen.Â
The audience cheered and applauded until they sat down and the music faded away. âWelcome, welcome!â Jimmy said excitedly. âThank you for being here!â The cast beamed at the host, unable to contain their excitement nor nerves.Â
âThanks for having us,â said Charlie, the polite Canadian.Â
âSo, exciting news, season two of your show Julie and The Phantoms premieres on Netflix tonight, is that correct?âÂ
âYes!â all five said, though not quite in unison, and the crowd roared again. Y/N couldnât hide the smile on her red painted lips as she looked out into the sea of people.Â
Jimmy turned to the crowd, âIf the people at home have never heard of your show, how would you explain it?â His eyes fell on the girl closest to his desk, which was Madison, allowing her to answer the question.Â
âUhm⌠Julie and The Phantoms is about this girl, Julie, who tragically lost her mom and, with it, her love for music. That is until one day, she plays this old CD she finds and out pop these three lovable, dorky ghosts who used to be in a band in the 90âs, called Sunset Curve. They died when they ate bad hot dogs--â the crowd let out a laugh, and it made Madison chuckle too. âYeah! -- Anyway, and so these boys kind of help her find her love for music again and they form a band, called Julie and The Phantoms as the audience can see the ghosts when they play with Julie. And a lot of things happen and itâs funny and light and cute!âÂ
Jimmy let out a chuckle too, âAnd now thereâs a season 2!â Another cheer erupted from the crowd. âWhat can you tell us about season 2, Charlie?â he directed the question to the boy next to the newbee.Â
âA lot happens! We see what happens with Nick and Caleb, and we meet Philippa, Pips, Covington who will stir up some crazy stuff in the boysâ lives, especially Reggieâs,â he explained with a grin. He stirred in his seat a little before placing his arm on the back of the couch, behind y/nâs head. The girl tried not to react to the overwhelmingly amazing scent of sandalwood that emanated from this movement.Â
Jimmyâs eyes landed on y/n and she was certain that for a moment, he knew what she was thinking, but then he asked her a question instead. âHow was it for you, y/n, as the newcomer to the cast? Did they immediately embrace you or did you have trouble being accepted?âÂ
âI hated it--â she replied seriously, but then giggled, âNo, I loved it! They were so kind and so welcoming, I immediately felt like I was part of their tight group. It did feel strange at first, Iâm not gonna lie. But after a while, coming to work didnât really feel like working anymore.âÂ
âAnd your character, Phillipa, was she accepted by the other characters?âÂ
She cleared her throat of any nerves before answering. âPippa was⌠well-- she was working for her dead great-uncle, so she had to make sure she was accepted and weasled herself into the friend group pretty quickly. She knew how to get to Reggie especially and thanks to him, got into their friend group.â
âThatâs amazing. Iâm so excited to watch! My daughters are eight and nine, and they loved season 1 of Julie and The Phantoms. Theyâre thrilled to see the new season!âÂ
A chorus of âawâs were shared within the cast as well as throughout the audience.Â
âYeah, theyâre pretty cute.â He picked up his cue cards to remind himself of the next bullet point he needed to talk about. âOh! Since itâs almost Christmas, I like to ask my guests to tell us a fun holiday themed story before I send them off, do you guys have a fun holiday themed story for us?âÂ
The cast exchange glances until Owen asked, âShould we talk about the Christmas market we did last year after filming?â The rest of the cast made sounds of agreement with a few giggles mixed in between.Â
âTell us about the Christmas Market!â Jimmy shouted excitedly, almost resembling a five-year-old getting their Christmas presents early.Â
Owen took the lead on this one. âSo, we were all in Vancouver, we had wrapped season 2 and we would soon be going home, but we decided to spend one last night together at a Christmas market in Vancouver cityâŚâ   Â
Bundled up in layers of sweaters and a thick coat, y/n trekked through the layer of snow that blanketed to grounds of Vancouver City. She was trying her hardest not to focus on the blistering cold that nipped at her nose but rather on the story Charlie was telling the others in front of her. His voice boomed into the busy streets, along with the othersâ laughter.Â
She always loved the way Charlie told his stories about every wild adventure heâd ever been on and the way Owen quipped back with the wittiest of comebacks. Or how Madison would chime in with her typical Gen Z humor none of the boys understood. Y/N was sure going to miss the entire dynamic of the group when they were back home.Â
Thousands of lights flickered above y/nâs head as they strolled through the entrance of the infamous Vancouver Christmas Market. She let her eyes take in the beauty whilst her stomach fluttered from excitement. Her love for Christmas Markets had never faltered over the years. It still excited her in the same way it did when she was just a child.Â
âCan we get a hot chocolate first? Iâm freezing!â Savannah suggested, her teeth chattering as she snuggled into her thick scarf. Smiling, y/n hooked her arm around hers and pulled her closer in hopes the warmth of all her layers would help the blonde girl a little.Â
âI heard they have a unique recipe that only the Christmas Market here ever uses!â Charlie added with a wide grin before leading the gang towards the warm beverage kiosk. It resembled a cabin from a ski resort, decked out all the way with Christmas lights and foliage.Â
The group stood in front of the kiosk and read the menu to figure out whatever theyâd want to drink. âOoh, that Peppermint Hot Chocolate sounds delish,â Owen said, and when y/nâs eyes landed on the words, her mouth curled up into a smirk.Â
âWeâre going that route tonight, hm?âÂ
The hot chocolate he was talking about was spiked with peppermint schnapps and chocolate liqueur. This sounded right up y/nâs street, and she knew it would warm Savannah up from the inside.Â
âFollow me or donât follow me, thatâs up to you, but I am taking that route tonight.â Owen rubbed his gloved hands together until the lady inside the kiosk looked up at him, signalling that it was his turn to order. âA peppermint hot chocolate, please.â He sounded way too confident for someone who had just turned 21 that year.Â
The woman peered over her half-moon glasses, letting her eyes glide from his eyes to his toes before sneering, âID, please.â Owenâs mouth dropped open and with a lot of cursing underneath his breath, he reached for his wallet.Â
âHa! Owenâs getting IDâd!â Charlie cackled, shaking his head. The womanâs eyes darted over to the second boy, giving him the same one-up before raising her eyebrows as if saying âIâm gonna get you too, little boyâ.Â
And she did. She IDâd Charlie too. No one else but Charlie and Owen, which everyone had a good laugh at as they were sipping their hot chocolates, which for three out of ten isnât spiked.Â
While Jeremy and Booboo were still teasing the two boys, y/n turned around and let her eyes scan the entire view in front of her. All the pretty lights and the snow whirling to the ground so gracefully and the music floating through the air made the cold more bearable.Â
A gasp eliciting from Jadahâs tiny body made y/n snap out of her thoughts and turn to the younger cast member. Her eyes were wide and shimmering, looking up at the tall Christmas tree that was towering above their heads with tens of thousands of lights blinking back at them.Â
âIsnât that the walk-through Christmas tree?!â she asked, excitedly.Â
Madison took her hand and, giggling, they weaved through the sea of people towards the one-of-a-kind festive fairyland. Y/N exchanged glances with the rest before they, too, made a beeline towards the tree, dodging people left and right.Â
âHey, Owen, are you sure youâre gonna be able to fit?â y/n asked the tall Oklahoman teasingly. The boyâs mouth dropped open, and before she could properly register it, he started chasing her. She ran past Madison and Jadah, and tried to duck behind any other visitor until he eventually picked her up and threw her over his shoulder. The girl shrieked, prior to a giggle. Â
Jimmyâs voice echoed over y/nâs flashback to the most festive night of that year. âYou guys really sound like a close group of friends.âÂ
âYeah! We are! Weâre like a little family!â Charlie replied, dropping the arm that was on the back of the sofa around the girlâs shoulder.Â
âWhat happened next?â Jimmy then questioned, curiously. The whole scene almost resembled a toddler listening to his bedtime story.Â
Jeremy cleared his throat with a chuckle. âWell, if this night were a movie, youâd now have a cute montage of us going through that magical tree and on the carousel like little children.âÂ
âYeah, youâd see us stuff our faces with churros and pretzels,â y/n added, making Jimmy and the crowd laugh.Â
âAnd we got a lot of Christmas shopping done too!â Madison chimed in with a smile. âI actually got everyoneâs present when they were right there with me. None of them noticed.âÂ
âOh, no, I noticed,â y/n replied with a smirk, to which Madison reacted with widened eyes.Â
âWhatâs next?!â Jimmy queried. His eyes were glistening as he listened to the cast talk. He just loved their dynamic and how well they got along with one another.Â
Y/N continued the story as her mind tumbled back into her daydream.Â
The music had stopped just a few minutes ago, but only now y/nâs ears picked up on the sudden absence. Knitting her eyebrows together, she lifted her eyes to the stage in the corner of the market where singers were carolling minutes ago, and was now completely empty. As the small amount of alcohol made her brain a little woozy, her teeth gnawed on her bottom lip in thought.Â
âGuys⌠Should we--Should we go sing a song?â she suggested, causing all of them to look up in surprise. âThereâs no one on the stage⌠Should we?â she pointed at the podium to emphasize what she meant.Â
As smiles appeared on each of their faces, the group walked up to the stage and grabbed a microphone each. Charlie reached for the acoustic guitar on the stand, but y/n stopped him.Â
âLetâs do a capella for once?â she told him tenderly.Â
When his eyes met hers, she felt her lungs expand with the gasp that left her body. How gorgeous could oneâs eyes be. But with that one look, the boy also knew what song she wanted to sing. The one song that had been stuck in her head for the past month during filming. And the rest of the crew knew too because when y/n counted them in softly, they all started to sing along. Their voices mingling perfectly and floating throughout the night sky.Â
âThe fireplace is burning bright, shining all on me I see the presents underneath the good old Christmas tree And I wait all night 'til Santa comes to wake me from my dreams Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to meâ
Savannah locked eyes with y/n and a smile fell to their lips before they looked out to the audience they had assembled with their harmonies reaching across the entire Christmas Market.Â
âI see the children play outside, like angels in the snow While mom and daddy share a kiss under the mistletoe And we'll cherish all these simple things wherever we may be Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to meâ
Owen came to stand next to y/n and wrapped an arm around her shoulder as they all sang the chorus together, the tall blondie on lead vocals and the others harmonizing in the background.Â
âI've got this Christmas song in my heartâ
âSong in my heartâ
âI've got the candles glowing in the dark I'm hanging all the stockings by the Christmas tree Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to me Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to meâ
As though they had prepared the entire performance, Booboo led them into the next verse while the others acted as backing vocals for him. His warm, deep voice sent chills down everyoneâs spines, especially of the people in the crowd.Â
âI listen for the thud of reindeer walking on the roof As I fall asleep to lullabies, the morning's coming soonâ
His cast mates then joined in again and together, they sang the chorus once again with Jeremy taking lead this time. While they did, y/n took a hold of Savannahâs gloved hand, squeezing it as they looked at each other with intent in their eyes. Like they meant what they were singing to one another.Â
âThe only gift I'll ever need is the joy of family Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to me I've got this Christmas song in my heartâ
âSong in my heartâ
âI've got the candles glowing in the dark I'm hanging all the stockings by the Christmas tree Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to me Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to meâ
Y/N turned her head to the other side now, locking eyes with Tori and Sacha, and shooting them a wink before they lapsed into the chorus one last time. It felt good to sing with everyone for once. During filming, it was always just a select group of people that got to sing together.Â
âOh, the joy that fills our hearts and makes us see Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to me I've got this Christmas song in my heart I've got the candles glowing in the dark And then for years to come we'll always know one thing That's the love that Christmas can bring Oh, why? 'Cause that's Christmas to meâ
As the crowd erupted into cheers and applause, the group shared an intense look, one that said they were always going to be friends. No matter how far away theyâll be from tomorrow on. Even if they donât get picked up for a third season, theyâre always going to be there for each other and be the best of friends forever. The only gift theyâll ever need is the joy of family. And they were family.Â
âThat was so beautiful!â Jimmy exclaimed after theyâd told him about everything that had happened that night in a short synopsis. âNow, I believe youâre gonna sing for us now?âÂ
The cast nodded in unison. âOkay, what are you bringing us tonight? The song you sang at the Christmas market?âÂ
Madison giggled, âNo, though we love that song, thereâs one we collectively think is one of the greatest Christmas songs ever. Itâs the ultimate classic Happy Xmas, War is Over by John Lennon.âÂ
âAmazing! You can go get ready!â he gestures to the tiled floor in front of the red curtain where the crew had set up their instruments and five microphones for them. âCatch Julie and The Phantoms season 2 on Netflix from tonight! Theyâre singing for us now. Madison, y/n, Charlie, Jeremy and Owen, take it away!âÂ
Owen counted them in by slamming his sticks together and then began playing the rhythm of the song. Y/N then chimed in with the jingling of the tambourine before the other boys and Madison joined with their respective instruments. Soon after, Madisonâs voice floated through the talk showâs studio.Â
âSo this is Christmas And what have you done Another year over A new one just begunâ
When the girls lock eyes, they shoot one another a wink before y/n takes over the next part of the verse.Â
âAnd so this is Christmas I hope you have fun The near and the dear ones The old and the youngâ
Then the boys chime in, their voices mingling as they linger in the air for everyone to hear and enjoy. Y/N lets her eyes dart over to Charlie, whoâs already looking at her with a smile on his face.Â
âA very merry Christmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fearsâ
The others shut up, giving Charlie the floor now. He really was born to be a rockstar. The way he just owned the stage and looked like an absolute legend, singing his heart out and playing his guitar like a pro. And heâd only started learning when he was on season 1 of Julie and The Phantoms.Â
âAnd so this is Christmas For weak and for strong The rich and the poor ones The world is so wrongâ
For a split second, he locked eyes with y/n again as she took over and faced the audience with a smile, still working her little tambourine for the extra jingles. Somehow, this just felt like one of their jam sessions during rehearsals and not at all like it was a live broadcast on national television.Â
âAnd so happy Christmas For black and for white Ooh, for everyone Let's stop all the fightsâ
Their voices mingled together again, and, in a boost of confidence, y/n grabbed the mic from its stand and walked over to Jeremy, rocking out with him as he shredded on the bass.Â
âA very merry Christmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fearsâ
The music slowed down, and while Madi, Owen and Jeremy took care of the soft backing vocals, y/n walked over to Charlie and sang the lines to one another, never breaking eye contact.Â
âAnd so this is Christmas And what have we done Another year over A new one just begunâ
The music picked back up. Madison took over this time, and while y/n worked her tambourine, she danced her way towards the Latina girl with a smile plastered on her face.Â
âAnd so happy Christmas We hope you have fun The near and the dear ones The old and the youngâ
She then turned to Owen as he took over on the next part. He shot her a quick wink whilst his mouth curled up on one side. âA very merry Christmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fearâ
Each taking their turn, starting with Owen, they all sang a part of the backing vocals while the boys and Madison played the instrumental intermezzo. âMerry ChristmasâÂ
âSo this is Christmasâ
âWar is over nowâÂ
Returning back to her spot, y/n placed her mic on the stand again, and along with the others, sang the very last lines of the song.Â
âWar is over If you want it Itâs over nowâ
The crowd erupted into cheers and applause while the band assembled in the middle of the stage. Charlie grabbed y/nâs hand and gave it a small, reassuring squeeze. All five of them together took a bow before exchanging knowing glances.Â
This time around, they knew they were going to see each other tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that as they were doing all the promo they could. It felt a lot more reassuring than it did that day at the Christmas Market when they had no clue when theyâd see each other again. Though all of them knew that this was still the only gift theyâll ever need. Their little found family. Â

Kyoru Week: Day 7 - Forever
I know this is probably where everyone went with this prompt, but how could I NOT write about their wedding day when I am given the prompt "forever"? Also, I got caught up in a D&D session, so this entry ended up getting published at 1:45am on October 13th, when it was nearly good-to-go at about 5pm on October 12th... whoops...
Full story is below, but you can also read it over on AO3, on FFN, or on DA.
ââââââââââ
Meet, Remember, and Love Again
Spoilers: Headcanon for their wedding; minor shipping spoilers for other characters Romance Level: Exchanging Wedding Vows Word Count: 2376 Summary: Kyo and Tohru finally get married
Kyo's leg twitched with nervous energy. The collar of his Jacobite shirt was already loose, but he tugged on it all the same. While Tohru made sure to pick out a comfortable suit for him, Kyo was still unbearably hot.
âHey,â Yuki whispered in Kyo's ear, his hand firmly on the redhead's shoulder. âYou're not getting cold feet, are you? I'm sure Tohru-chan would hate it if I had to kick your ass right now.â
âEnough, ya damn rat,â Kyo shrugged Yuki's hand off, but gave him a half-smile of gratitude. âNothing is going to make me run away, that is, unless Tohru's hand is already in mine.â
âGood. At least you grew some smarts since high school.â Yuki smirked, and straightened out Kyo's collar for him.
âYeah, well, wait until it's your turn up here,â Kyo playfully hissed.
As if on cue, the music started up, and a parade of bridesmaids walked down the aisle. Kisa had grown so much since Kyo last saw her, and it was a pleasant surprise to see her walk with such confidence. Next was Rin. She still had a dominant stride, but she certainly seemed more graceful and gentle â slightly â than when they were growing up. She had also restricted her punk accessories to a single thick, black tungsten band on her left hand: her engagement ring from Haru. Kagura walked in behind Rin. She looked like she was about to burst into tears, but her smile seemed genuine enough. Machi was the last to walk the aisle. She started off staring at the floor, as meek as always. Then a thought must have flickered though her mind, because she bolted her head upright and stared directly at Yuki. The moment their eyes connected, Machi stood tall and glided the rest of the way to the alter.
Kyo smirked, leaned back so Yuki could hear, and hummed the Bridal March. Yuki playfully pushed back against him. Then both men stood at attention. The whole congregation stood and turned, and Tohru walked into the doorway.
Her white gown was simple and flowy; cinched at the waist, and lacy along the bodice. Her shoulders were bare, but a delicate white ribbon was wrapped like a choker around her neck. Her hair was pinned up, but some tresses were strategically spilled down her neck and across her shoulder. Kyo couldn't believe she could ever be more breathtaking. He was wrong.
He wasn't sure if it was the elegance of the dress, or how her hair was pinned, or the sheer fact that she was going to be his wife in a few short minutes. Maybe it was a particular glow coming off of her from the joy they shared. Whatever it was, Kyo fell in love with her all over again.
Uotani and Hanajima skirted to Tohru's side, escorting her to the alter as if they were her parents. The Yankee actually looked quite elegant with her hair now chopped short; still emulating Kyoko's look. Her makeup was subdued, and her gown was a lovely lavender that complimented her still-blonde locks. In her arms, instead of a bouquet, she carried Tohru's picture of her mom, so that Kyoko could attend her daughter's wedding.
Hanajima was still in her signature black, but it was a much more modern evening gown style than her standard Gothic look. Her long hair was woven into an intricate French Twist, giving her a very sophisticated air about her. She didn't wear a mourning veil â much to Kyo's relief â but she still held a handkerchief to her face; eyes welling up.
Tohru was grateful to have Uo-chan and Hana-chan escort her down the aisle. She was so nervously excited about everything that she could barely stand; her legs were shaking too much beneath her. Seeing Kyo made her all the more weak.
Kyo hated ties; hated having something around his neck. Even after the curse was broken, he hated having his neck restricted at all. Tohru had seen a bunch of pictures of Western pirates in loose-fitted but still elegant-looking cotton shirts. The v-neck collars plummeted to the chest, and was laced closed. These pirate shirts â Jacobite shirts, they were called â had a refined look to them, but would be comfortable for Kyo to wear. With a pair of dress slacks and shoes, and a paisley-patterned blue vest, he looked almost regal. There was no doubt that everyone would see him as a Western Prince; just as she had always pictured him.
His groomsmen â Yuki, Haru, Momiji, and Shigure â were in much more traditional dress suits: deep blue dress shirts, black slacks, and a black tie and vest. It made Kyo stand out a little, but neither of them cared. Tohru pointed out that her dress had a different style than the simple ballroom gowns her bridesmaids wore; and they both knew they couldn't really reign in Uotani and Hanajima. Sure, the bridal party would seem a bit disjointed, but their priorities were more on comfort and people being happy anyway.
Upon reaching the alter, Kyo stepped forward to take Tohru's hand.
âYou better take care of our girl,â Uotani threatened softly.
âWe will find out, and we will do whatever it takes to protect her,â Hanajima calmly added. Kyo felt the hairs on his body stand on end as she stared him down.
âUo-chan, Hana-chan,â Tohru giggled, âWe'll be fine. Thank you.â
The girls all embraced, and Tohru got kissed on her temples from both best friends at the same time. Kyo and the girls jointly helped Tohru to the alter, and Uo and Hana took their places as co-maids-of-honor behind Tohru.
The officiant welcomed their guests, and spoke briefly about the beauty of love, the trials of life-long companionship, and the rewards of putting in the daily effort to love each other. While Kyo and Tohru had paid close attention during their rehearsal the night before, in those moments the officiant's words washed over and past them. There was no one else in that room.
It was Kyo. It was Tohru. It was her hands in his. It was his orange eyes, and her brown ones. It was their equally shaky breaths, and trembling legs. It was their soft smiles and half-lidded glances. It was the mental countdown to them officially being one family.
âSohma-san,â the officiant cut through Kyo's reverie, snapping him to the present.
âHmm?â Kyo ignored the muffled chuckles of his friends and family.
âYour vows,â the officiant coaxed.
âRight.â Kyo blinked a few times to bring the words he practiced a thousand times to the forefront. Refocused on Tohru, he ran his thumbs over her fingers; playing with them. âTohru, even when we didn't know it, you have been a constant in my life since I was a kid. I dunno if it was with the 'red thread,' but we were definitely tied together somehow. It terrified me to know that we'd be sharing a roof, but I think part of that fear was because I had wanted that so badly, and I didn't think I deserved it. Thank you for showing me that it was alright to want a future; to want a future with you. Thank you for telling me that I deserved to be loved. Thank you for rescuing me.â
Kyo pulled Tohru's right hand to his lips, and tenderly kissed her knuckles. âI was terrified of the idea of my soul being bound to another; forced to come together lifetime after lifetime. Now, I don't want anything more intensely. I want to start a new banquet with you. One where we are surrounded with love, acceptance, and happy memories. Oh! And lots of hugs.â
The Sohmas collectively chuckled and muttered their agreement to that last vow.
âVery lovely.â The officiant turned to Tohru. âHonda-san, please speak your vows to your groom.â
Tohru shook. She didn't think she had anything as lovely as what Kyo had just said. He had memorized it, no less! She slowly pivoted to Hana-chan to pass over her bouquet, and then turned to Uo-chan to accept her index cards. Still quaking a little, she held her left hand out to Kyo, and stared at her vows.
The second Kyo's hand again cupped hers, Tohru calmed. He didn't care. She could simply say 'I love you, and I want to be your wife,' and he'd be happy. These weren't for everyone else. They were for him, and for her to let him know how much he meant to her.
âKyo-kun, you are sunshine and warmth that I didn't know I could ask for. You are the strength I don't have, and the safety I didn't realize I was yearning for. You are my smile and my joy. You are a subtle kindness, and a sweet gentleness. You've always been a prince in my eyes. You don't judge me, but you always try to teach me. Together, I hope we can always rise each other up, and grow more.â
She squeezed Kyo's hand to steady herself, and then looked up from her cards. She didn't need them for this part, but she did she need to look in Kyo's eyes. âI'm positive that my mom considers your promise fulfilled, because with you I am truly found, and I'm as safe and protected as I would have been with her. She would have been so proud of the man you became. I know, because I am.â
Kyo again pulled her hand to his mouth to kiss, tears spilling down his cheeks, and she felt droplets squeaking out of her eyes as well.
âNow, if you'll take the rings.â The officiant gestured to Yuki and Hanajima. The two of them stepped forward. Yuki handed Kyo Tohru's wedding band, and Tohru exchanged her index cards for Kyo's wedding ring.
âAs you exchange rings, recite your commitment to each other,â the officiant said. âSohma-san, you start.â
Kyo delicately slid Tohru's engagement ring off her hand, never once taking his eyes away from hers. âFor the girl you were, for the woman you are, and for the wife you shall be to me. I choose you to be my only one.â He then slid the wedding band onto her hand. âWith this ring, I thee wed. I take you as my friend, my lover, and my wife from this day forth and into the fullness of time, where we will meet, remember, and love again.â
Tohru couldn't see anymore. She just kept blinking tears away. She had no clue that Kyo was shamelessly letting his tears just spill. She felt him slide her engagement ring back on after her new wedding band, and she squeezed his fingers.
Taking Kyo's left hand in hers, Tohru slid the wedding band over his fingernail, and let it rest there. âFor- for the- for the boy you were,â her voice shook and cracked. She knew she was about to start sobbing with joy, but she had to resist. The ceremony was almost done. Just a couple more minutes, and then nothing could take Kyo from her. âFor the ma-man you are, and- and for the- the husband you shall- you shall be- be to me. I choose you to- to be my very only and solitary one.â
The polite chuckle rolled through the congregation. Kyo mouthed 'you got this' to Tohru, and she slid his wedding band the rest of the way onto his finger.
âWith this ring, I thee wed. I- I take you as my friend, my lo-lover, and my husband from- from this day forth and into the fullness of time, where- where we will meet, and we'll remember, and we'll love again.â
Kyo mouthed 'I love you' to her, and she quickly mouthed it back.
âBeautiful! I now pronounce you The Sohmas: Kyo and Tohru. You may kiss.â
Everyone cheered as Kyo cupped the back of Tohru's head, and pulled her to him, his other arm wrapping around her waist. Her arms circled his neck, and she rocked onto her toes. Their lips met, and neither wanted to separate again. They were a family. They had been for a while now, but it was finally official. He was her husband. She was his wife.
It was actually Uo clearing her throat that caused the two to break, their cheeks flushed from the excitement and mild embarrassment at kissing so passionately in front of everyone.
The recessional began to play, and hand bells rang. Hanajima passed Tohru's bouquet back to her, and Kyo escorted his bride â his wife - down the aisle. They passed through the back doors, and started their receiving line. Uo and Hana followed, linked arm-in-arm. Then Yuki walked with Machi, both a-blush with thoughts of their own potential trip to an alter. Rin and Haru were a bit more playful on their trip back up the aisle, Haru nipping a bit at Rin's neck. Momiji escorted young Kisa, the two of them talking bubbly about the ceremony while trying to still look serious. Finally, Shigure escorted Kagura to the receiving line, muttering comforts into her ear.
As they waited for their guests to spill out and congratulate them, Kyo pulled Tohru against his side. She nuzzled his chest, and he breathed in the scent of her hair. He then played with her rings, and she did the same: spinning his band around his finger.
âHow does it feel, to wear a ring?â she asked.
âLike the greatest thing in the world.â He kissed the top of her head and squeezed her tight. âYou're my wife now.â
âYou're my husband! Kyo-kun is my husband!â
âForever,â he whispered in her ear. âForever and for always.â
âUntil the end of time, and beyond.â
Kyo angled her chin, and he leaned in for another kiss. He could never get enough of them, and he knew he could indulge for the rest of his life. Tohru was just as greedy, and wept as she thought of her parents.
Their love story lasted for eternity, but Tohru and Kyo's would last longer than that.

Miracle on Second Street (3/3)
Ao3 ||Â Buy Me a Ko-Fi?
"Emma?" Mrs. Morris called. "Can I speak with you for a moment?"
Emma rolled her eyes as she looked at the countdown to Christmas she'd made in school. Three days until another terrible Christmas that she'd hate. What could Mrs. Morris want with her now?
"Emma?" the woman said again, this time right outside the bedroom door.
The ten year old rolled her eyes and put the calendar back on the bedside table just as the door opened. "What do you want?" She couldn't help but feel a bit bitter over what had happened at the Christmas party a couple weeks ago.
Mrs. Morris took a seat at the edge of Emma's bed with a small smile. "I have some news for you, Emma."
She rolled her eyes. "What, is Santa going to be giving me an ornament with my name engraved on it?" she asked with dripping sarcasm.
"No. Well, actually, it isn't up to me what Santa gets for you, anymore."
Emma frowned. "Oh. So you're moving me to a new home now?" Had her behavior at the Christmas party really been that bad? Even the old guy playing Santa had understood her frustration. Maybe she'd go live with him instead.
"Please just listen to me, Emma. It isn't up to me to buy you gifts anymore because⌠well⌠you've been adopted."
Emma blinked, her brain taking a moment to process what Mrs. Morris had said. Adopted? Someone actually wanted her? This had to be a joke⌠right?
"You're lyingâŚ" she said quietly. "You have to be. I'm ten. I'm too old."
"I'm not lying to you. I would never lie to you about something like this. Their names are Mary-Margaret and David Nolan, and they're downstairs right now waiting to meet you," Mrs. Morris said quietly. "They live in Maine, so you'd have to change schools, but I promise you, they really do want to adopt you."
She furrowed her brow, trying to find a hint of lying in Mrs. Morris' face, but couldn't find any to her surprise.
"âŚOkay. I'll go downstairs," Emma said, getting off the bed and following her foster mother downstairs to the dining room where the couple was. One look at them and Emma had a gut feeling in her stomach that this was different from the last time she'd been told she was going to be adopted.
The woman's eyes were full of tears, and she was looking at Emma with so much love (not pity, not sadness, but love), that Emma thought she might burst.
The man's gaze was no different. His eyes were soft, and he mirrored the same look his wife had.
"Hi EmmaâŚ" the woman said softly, beaming at her. "I'm Mary-Margaret, and this is David, and we're⌠we're going to be your parents."
Emma nodded, sitting at the table. "Hi⌠Mrs. Morris told me that you live in Maine."
"We do. In a small town called Storybrooke. David's the sheriff and I teach fourth grade," Mary-Margaret said.
"Oh. Will I have any siblings?"
A brief flash of pain crossed both of the adults' faces, and Emma nearly winced in embarrassment. Okay. That was a bad thing to ask.
Finally, it was David who spoke. "No. You'd be our only child."
Relief flooded her. "Really? That's okay. I promise," she said with a tiny smile. She could have them all to herself? Good. She was looking forward to that. "Do I have any other family?"
"A big one," Mary-Margaret said with a light laugh, obviously happy to be off the topic of other children. "There's my former stepmother and her husband and their kids, David's mother, his brother, and our closest friends and their children. You'll have lots of playmates, Emma."
Emma's smile grew a bit more. "Oh, that's good." She didn't mind playing with other kids, but she got annoyed when she had to share everything with him. Especially when they stole stuff from her. Hopefully these two, and the other parents, would be good parents and stop them.
Mary-Margaret smiled. "Emma, we have been waiting so long to adopt a child. We're so glad that they matched us up with you. I have an idea. Why don't we take you out for lunch? You can get anything you'd like."
"I like grilled cheese and onion rings," Emma said with a smile. "Mabel's Diner has the best onion rings in town."
"I think we can arrange that. Shall we go then?"
"Really? Right now?!" Emma asked, her eyes lighting up. She was starving!
David and Mary-Margaret laughed. "Yes, of course right now. Go get your coat and shoes and you can show us the way."
In moments, Emma was walking between David and Mary-Margaret through the snowy weather, telling them stories of her childhood while they told her stories of Storybrooke. They owned a farm as well as their regular jobs, and her new grandmother and uncle helped  them out. Mary-Margaret was Jewish, so Emma would be celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah.
They had a dog too â Emma had never had a dog before.
Even though part of her was still suspicious of them, part of her afraid that she would be returned again, there was something about the two of them that made Emma feel comfortable and safe in their presence.
"When are you taking me to Storybrooke?" she asked through a mouthful of cheesy goodness and swallowing a sip of her cola.
 "Tomorrow."
"Just in time for Christmas!" Emma said with a small gasp. She couldn't wait to celebrate Christmas with a family instead of other orphans who also only got one present. Finally, she'd be able to celebrate Christmas with a family that loved her.
"That's right. So Emma⌠Mrs. Morris tells us you've never had a proper Christmas so⌠what do you want for Christmas?" David asked.
Emma blinked in surprise, pausing. What did she want for Christmas? All she wanted was a family that wouldn't return her, and it looked like she was getting that⌠she'd never been able to flip through a Toys-R-Us catalog and mark which Barbies or games she wanted. How was she supposed to figure that out in a matter of days? The older kids had stolen the catalog anyway.
Emma bit her lip, looking between her new parents. "I⌠I don't know," she admitted. "I didn't think I'd have a family for Christmas. I didn't think of anything other than a family."
Predictably, there was worry written on their faces.
"What do you like to do then? Drawing? Sports? Reading?" Mary-Margaret asked.
"Um⌠I like reading and singing⌠and animals," Emma said, biting her lip. "Sorry if that's not much help."
"Don't think that. We'll find gifts for you. We promise. Do you like school?"
Emma shrugged as she took a bite of an onion ring. "It's okay. I don't have many friends though. But I like music class at least. And I like science too."
Mary-Margaret smiled. "Well that's good! My friend in Storybrooke teaches music. She'll be so happy to have you in her class, I'm sure."
She smiled again. How were things going so perfectly for her? There had to be a catch, right? There was no way that these people would be so willing and excited to have her as a daughter. She was a screw up. Damaged goods.
 Something had to be wrong.
Still, Emma would humor them for as long as they'd have her in their home. They were willing to at least listen to her and talk to her like she wasn't just a check from the government. Plus, she'd get away from her annoying foster siblings for a while.
 -----
Mary-Margaret had been smitten with Emma Swan since Aiden had showed her the photograph of her. Finding out the struggles the girl had gone through had only made her heart break into thousands of pieces, and she knew they had to do something to make her Christmas extra special.
It would be a time crunch, she knew. Only days before Christmas â a holiday she didn't pay all that much attention to anyway â left little time for people to go shopping, but one look at Emma and the day they'd spent getting to know her meant Mary-Margaret felt like she had to throw her everything into making Christmas special for her.
"David," she said quietly. "How are we going to do this?" she asked with a sigh as they relaxed in their hotel room later that night. "Sure we have some decorations and that small tree but⌠Emma deserves better, don't you think?"
David nodded in agreement, a look of consideration on his face. "Yeah. I agree. But even though we're far from home, we aren't stuck doing this by ourselves. I'll just call Regina and my mother and see if they'd be willing to help make our house Christmas-ready. And tell them what Emma likes so they can get some gifts for her too. Aiden already promised that Baelfire would be willing to be her friend. Ruby and Killian said both Emily and Alice would too. We can do this, Mary-Margaret. Just have faith."
She nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. "You're right. This just happened so fast that I feel like we haven't had time to breathe."
"We haven't, really," David said with a small smile as he dialed his phone. "But when we're able to celebrate as a family, it'll be worth it."
"I know it willâŚ" she said softly. "David, we have a daughter. We have a child and she's perfect and beautiful."
"We do. And we're going to make this the best Christmas she's ever had."
Mary-Margaret grinned. "We're going to make every holiday the best she's ever had."
 -----
It all felt like a dream still. Even as she packed her clothes and few personal belongings up into her suitcase, she still felt like she was going to wake up and find it was all just a fantasy. Finally, she wouldn't be the one standing outside in the freezing weather looking longingly at the car as it drove away with some lucky kid. She was the lucky kid now.
"Emma! Mr. and Mrs. Nolan are here!" Mrs. Morris called. "It's time to go, sweetheart."
Emma took a deep breath and looked around the shared bedroom. It was strange that she wouldn't be returning to this place. She'd be going to Storybrooke, Maine, with her new parents⌠and an extended family she'd never had before.
She made her way downstairs, feeling the stares of her now former foster siblings shooting right through her as she looked up at David and Mary-Margaret, giving them a timid smile before being led out to their car.
"Okay Emma. You ready to head to Storybrooke?" David asked, pulling the driver's door closed and starting the car.
 "I'm ready."
As David pulled out of the driveway, Emma didn't even bother looking back at the foster home she'd lived in for two years. There was no need to â she didn't feel any sadness about leaving it at all.
The plane ride was easy, only a little bit of turbulence, and before long, Emma found herself riding through the dense forests of northern Maine, a vast difference from the cities and suburbs of Minnesota. As happy as she was that she was finally out of here, she had to admit⌠she was pretty hungry.
"Um⌠'scuse me," she said softly and waiting until Mary-Margaret looked in the backseat before continuing, "I'm hungry. Are we going to stop soon?"
"Oh, of course! We'll be home soon, and everyone is meeting us there, so we'll have a big family dinner, okay? It's usually a tradition to go to Ruth's house for Christmas Eve, but everyone wanted to come over to ours to meet you instead. They all brought food, so don't worry about going hungry."
"We'll be there in ten minutes. Think you can hold on until then?" David added with a smile.
Emma nodded with a smile. A home cooked meal would be better than a restaurant anyway.
Before long, they were pulling up to a white farmhouse, a haven against the snowy backdrop that surrounded it. The house was decorated with all of the Christmas trimmings Emma had once imagined, but never thought she'd ever get to experience.
"Emma," Mary-Margaret said as she put a hand on her shoulder, "this is your new home."
She smiled up at her new mother and nodded. "Thanks⌠mom."
There were tears in Mary-Margaret's eyes as she and David led Emma up the steps, letting Emma be the one to open the front door.
The home itself was something out of a Christmas movie. A large tree was in the corner of the room, stacks of presents lined up underneath it. Snowflakes and stars hung from the ceiling, the fireplace had three large and one smaller stocking hung in front of the cozy fire that was burning. A winter village was on one of the tables, and Emma noted some of the homes had a menorah painted on it, rather than a tree.
But what really caught Emma's attention was the large banner that hung right in the middle of the room, hand painted and decorated with children's handprints that said 'Welcome Home, Emma!', and the crowd of people that were gathered underneath it, all smiles.
"Alright Emma?" David asked with a smile. "This is your family."
"Oh!" a grey-haired woman in the front of the crowd cried as she rushed forward to where Emma and David stood. "Look at you. You're so beautiful."
"Mother⌠give her a bit of room," David said, though Emma could hear the amusement in his tone. "I'm sure this is a lot to take in at once."
"Oh David, she's my first grandchild. You can't blame me for being excited."
Emma smiled up at the woman. "HiâŚ"
"Are you hungry, sweetheart? You've had a long day, I'm sure."
Emma nodded, relieved she'd asked that.
"Alright. Why we get you a plate of food and then you can meet everyone. Does that sound okay?"
She nodded again, and Ruth guided her to the kitchen where a buffet awaited her. Emma had never been allowed to have so many choices before, and she wound up with a plate and two bowls filled to the brim of food.
She had to sit with the other kids that were there, but for once, they didn't fight her for food. Instead they just⌠talked and introduced themselves. Emma slowly felt her guard slip away, and she began to enjoy herself with them.
They allowed Emma to open a few presents ("Think of them as welcome home gifts, not Christmas gifts!" her grandmother had said), and before long, she was under the warm covers of her bed with her new purple quilt, stuffed horse in her arms and Wilby asleep at the end of her bed, drifting off to sleep.
It was then that Emma heard something strange. She ignored it at first, until the noise got louder and was followed by a very distinctive human laugh.
Her eyes popped open, and she pulled herself from the bed and went to the window, eyes widening in shock when she saw a familiar face flying outside her window, in a sled, pulled by nine flying reindeer.
She pulled the window open, leaning out, hearing the sleigh bells clear as day.
"I promised you, didn't I? Merry Christmas Emma!" she heard in the distance.
He was too far away to yell to him without waking up the entire house, so Emma could only hope he'd hear her whisper.
"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you⌠I'm sorry I didn't believe you."
She had a feeling she was going to have to write a really long apology letter next year.

Ghost Adventures: Horror at Joe Exotic Zoo premieres Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9 p.m. In the two-hour special, Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures crew go inside the infamous Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park to investigate âsinister accounts of ghostly activity,â according to the synopsis. In this two-hour special, the team examines claims of âtortured spirits believed to lurk in the shadows of a park tainted by tragic events like deadly fires and accidental shootings,â the synopsis reads. âCould these incidents have opened a mysterious portal to the other side? The team is prepared to confront these dark spirits as they attempt to gather evidence as to who, or what, is haunting this park.â
The special will be followed by the reopening of famed ghost hunter Hans Holzerâs original case files in the season 2 return of The Holzer Files, which airs at 11 p.m. The show returns with all-new investigations from the trail of John Wilkes Booth in Maryland to a serial killer in Ohio. Led by investigator Dave Schrader, psychic medium Cindy Kaza and equipment technician Shane Pittman, the series investigates terrifying true hauntings from the recently discovered case files of Americaâs first ghost hunter, Dr. Hans Holzer.
Recognized as the âfather of the paranormal,â Holzerâs legendary four-decade exploration into hauntings like the Amityville Horror house helped spawn a generation of supernatural enthusiasts, including Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who were inspired to write Ghostbusters. Holzerâs daughter, Alexandra Holzer, helps Travel Channel reopen her fatherâs most captivating case files â âdigging into thousands of documents, letters, photographs and chilling audio and visual recordings dating back to the 1950s,â according to the official synopsis.
In the sneak peek of the new season of Portals to Hell, which premieres Friday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m., Katrina Weidman and Jack Osbourne investigate Captain Grantâs Inn. The Inn was built in 1754, âmight just be the most haunted place in all of Connecticut,â according to the press statement. Carol, the current owner, claims that shortly after she purchased the property in 1986, she was taken over by an evil spirit. She conducted an exorcism to eliminate the angry spirit. âFor 10 years following the exorcism, the paranormal experiences were mild, but soon Carol and her guests started to experience an uptick in ghostly activity.â Carol claims she cataloged over 300 spirits haunting the property.Â
The Portals to Hell duo âseek to discover if these are historical hauntings or if there is something more sinister at play. In a risky attempt to get answers, the duo asks Carol to join the night investigation for an unprecedented experiment that leaves the entire team speechless.â
It will be followed by a special two-hour Osbourne family holiday treat, The Osbournes: Night of Terror. âAdamant on truly living up to their position as Americaâs first family of darkness,â Jack Osbourne takes Ozzy, Sharon and Kelly on their first-ever paranormal investigation: Los Angelesâ historical Heritage Square, a collection of active haunted houses believed to be the areaâs most haunted hotspot. Countdown: Top 3 Fairy Tales Used in Retellings
Fairy tales are my bread and butter as a writer. When I was young, I was introduced to them via the Disney Renaissance movies: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, most notably. As soon as I saw them in theatres, I had to read about them. As I grew older and the internet became a thing, I read more about fairy tales from other parts of the world and gained access to some of the older versions of my old favorites. These tales are my foundation as a fantasy writer.
My favorite tales were always full of magic and wonder. I even liked some of the pure morality tales, like âThe Girl Without Handsâ or âThe Red Shoes.â My imagination flew as a child and the very first story I wrote was about a girl who lived in a magical volcano. I didn't even know who Pele was at the time, otherwise I would have given her credit. I devoured any book that had to do with witches, wizards, magic, and mystery.
So the surge in retellings has made me a happy reader indeed.
Retelling tales isn't a new concept, given how often fairy tales were translated into different languages and adopted to different cultures, but the modern upswing has gone far beyond that. Favorite, beloved stories are transformed until they're almost unrecognizable. Some are used more often than others, but which ones are the most popular? What elements about them draw writers and readers alike into their worlds? Welcome, dear reader, as we look at the 3 most popular fairy tales used in retellings and why we keep coming back to them.
Certain fairy tales have a more timeless feel than others. Their stories resonate with readers for generations. They inspire us centuries after their creation and touch the most fundamentally human parts of our hearts. When talking about fairy tales, these could be considered âThe Big Threeâ in how often they're used in retellings.
1. Beauty and the Beast
Thanks to Disney's critically acclaimed animated feature, this tale catapulted to popularity, but even before then, people knew of it. Whether it was the more commonly published Marie Leprince de Beaumont or Andrew Lang version, the original publication by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, or even the myth of Eros and Psyche, the tale of a girl who falls in love with a monster, only to discover he's in truth a handsome prince, has been known for ages. It has charmed and enchanted readers with its magic, romance, and mystery.
But what about this tale encourages so many retellings?
Let's take a look.
At its core, âBeauty and the Beastâ has a universal message: the transforming power of love. It isn't just the Beast's transformation to handsome prince, but it's how a person changes themselves for someone they love. It's about how we as people want to be our best possible selves when we're in love and how that change takes time. âBeauty and the Beastâ is one of the few fairy tales where love grows over time. It reflects real life and that powerful message of love is something that resonates with humanity as a whole.
There's also the message of kindness and how it shouldn't be denied to anyone, man or beast. To deny kindness is, in itself, a beastly behavior and what caused the prince to be transformed in the first place. When he is shown and gives kindness, he becomes less a beast and more a human being. This kindness resonates in a secondary message of looking beneath the surface of a person to see the beauty within.
Fairy tale heroines were the original beauty queens. They were fair, delicate, and good. They shone with virtue. The heroine in âBeauty and the Beastâ is no exception. She is a good, dutiful daughter, the most beautiful of her sisters, well-read, and the purest of heart. Their princes were handsome, strong men, to match the heroine's beauty. Not the Beast. The Beast was such a prince, but becomes what would usually be the monster of the tale. It takes kindness and courage on Beauty's part to look past his exterior and see who he really is. Her strength and caring resonates with readers young and old.
âBeauty and the Beastâ has the most potential to be shaped into a new version of itself. Its basic, touching messages combined with elements of magic, romance, and mystery are wonderful ingredients to create new tales as old as time.
2. Cinderella
Although I love âBeauty and the Beast,â I have to admit that âCinderellaâ is my favorite fairy tale of all time. âCinderellaâ has always spoken to me in ways that other stories didn't. There are thousands of versions all over the world, from every culture, but the oldest recorded version is of Rhodopis, as told by Strabo, a Greek geographer. The most well known versions are by Charles Perrault (âCendrillonâ) and the Brothers Grimm (âAschenputtelâ), but the first European version was published by Giambattista Basile (âCenerentolaâ). Each version has its differences, but what is it about the story of a young girl who goes to a ball that compels writers to retell it so many different ways?
The core of âCinderellaâ is no less powerful than âBeauty and the Beastâ but it has a dark side: this is a fairy tale of abuse and the power of hope. In both Perrault and the Grimm versions of the tale, the Cinderella character is forced into a life of servitude after her mother dies and her father remarries. Also in both tales, and what makes it far worse, is that the father survives and allows this abuse of his only child. It's a sad state, but often seen in reality: children neglected and abused by their parents, the people meant to protect and love them. When, or if, they survive, it's a marvel of personal strength and character.
Despite all of the insults, chores, and sorrow heaped upon her, Cinderella never gives up hope. She never loses her kind nature, which takes strength all on its own. To resist abuse, to resist falling into the pit of hate and hopelessness and anger, requires an iron will and great courage, something often overlooked in Cinderella tales.
The message of hope, of never giving up, is one that also resonates through the changing times. Humanity itself exists on hope, going all the way back to the tale of Pandora's Box, and it's the one thing we keep with us, always. Because Cinderella has hope and courage, she is able to retain her good heart in the face of adversity, and is rewarded for it. While the real world isn't so kind, and having a good heart isn't a guarantee of reward, we still hope. We hope that somehow, someday, that strength will be rewarded.
Cinderella may have wanted a night off and a pretty dress to go to a party after a lifetime of slaving away for her family, but she's so much more than that. She's strong. The kind of strong modern readers want in their leading ladies.
3. Snow White
I have to admit, âSnow Whiteâ isn't one of my favorite fairy tales, although I do like some of the recent retellings. Originally published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 and called, âSchneewittchen,â it obtained its final version in 1854. It's one of the few fairy tales that doesn't have prior origins but is strictly native to its homeland of Germany. In comparison to the other two on this list, it's relatively young. Funny that, because it suits the main character perfectly. Snow White was around 7 years old when she was chased from her home by her stepmother (originally her mother in the first published version) and while Disney aged her to 14 years, she's still incredibly young and innocent.
Not to mention beautiful.
On the surface, Snow White embodies little of the strength of character that Beauty and Cinderella do. In the original tale, her father remarries and her stepmother comes to hate her, she is not made into a servant. She is still allowed to live as a princess. It's only until the queen can no longer contain her jealousy that she orders Snow White killed.Â
While Snow White faces greater hardship, in that someone actually attempts to murder her, she never saves herself. Her innocence leads her to fall for the queen's tricks 3 times, making a total of 4 attempts, if you count the huntsman. The dwarves are the ones who save her from herself and naivete. The prince saves her when the glass coffin she sleeps in is dropped and she spits out the bit of apple. The core message could be about innocence, and how the wicked try to kill it, but I think âSnow Whiteâ has a different appeal.
Rather than a universal message, it has a villain who has become beloved by the masses: the evil queen.
Jealousy is one of the basest human emotions. Everyone, myself included, has been jealous of something or someone at one point in life. The sheer dislike, anger, and sense of injustice against someone else possessing what we covet is the darker side of the human psyche and one that's explored briefly in the Brothers Grimm tale. The queen's jealousy is fueled by her obsession with two things: beauty and, to a lesser extent, youth.
In the original fairy tale, the queen is a pure villain. She has no background to justify her motives behind wanting to be fairest in the land. She simply wants it. When Snow White becomes more beautiful than her, she wants to kill the child and eliminate the problem. She has no qualms about murdering her own stepdaughter and attempts to do so multiple times. At the end, she goes to the wedding to kill the young bride, not knowing it's Snow White, so deep is her obsessive need to be the fairest of them all.
But why? What drives this obsession?
That's what writers around the world have done when reimagining and retelling the âSnow Whiteâ tale. They delve into the backstory of the queen. Writers are drawn to this type of character, who can be given a complex and compelling background to explain how she came to be and the reason behind her obsession. The possibilities are endless and it frees the imagination in a way that âBeauty and the Beastâ and âCinderellaâ don't.Â
Neither story has such open characters. Both the queen and Snow White can be reinterpreted, Snow White could be given a gun and a backbone, the queen could be a lonely girl forced to marry a man she doesn't love, the list goes on and on. That, I think, more than any universal message is what draws writers into using Snow White in their retellings.
Plus, who doesn't love a story about a wicked queen trying to poison our heroine and the heroine actually doing something about it?
With 3 such rich tales, it's no wonder the market has exploded with retellings. Some of the more recent ones include the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, and âThe Shadow Queenâ by C.J. Redwine. More are being released every month. I, myself, am looking forward to reading, âForest of a Thousand Lanternsâ by Julie C. Dao, released just this month. Funny enough, it's a âSnow Whiteâ retelling, featuring the Evil Queen and set in East Asia. Fairy tale retellings are emerging from all cultural backgrounds and to a voracious book dragon like myself, that is the best tale of all.
Thanks for stopping by, dear reader, and look for new blog posts on Tuesdays. I've got a secret project in the works that I'll be posting updates about with my posts so look for that in the future too.
