Odesta Fic Rec List

mortal fate is hard (you'd best get used to it) by mrworldwidestan - This is one that I actually just started reading (and is recent + currently updating) but so far, I really appreciate the world building. It’s from Finnick’s point of view during his Games and goes into detail about his family life and the district outside of his household, which I find really immersive. 

I Know The End by kenniiohontesha - Someone actually recommended this one to me a few weeks ago and since it never officially made it onto a list, I decided to put it on here now. I can’t say much about it because I haven’t given it a very close read, but from what I can tell, the world building is rich here also. It takes place during Annie’s Games, and alternates between Finnick and Annie’s POV. 

Landlocked by throttlegainwell - This is a series that focuses on Finnick’s life in the Capitol and his relationships. It’s not specifically Odesta, but there is Odesta in it, along with Finnick and Mags. I like this one because it offers some insight into how Finnick would think and act when he’s not at home, and it’s cool to see different relationships represented. 

we're hollow like the bottles that we drain by thrashunreal - This is a great Finnick and Johanna one-shot, and this author also has a lot of great Finnick fics, as well as fic for other characters that you might like. I really like this story’s use of second person POV because it creates such a closeness with the characters. 

What The Water Gave Me by Zartbitterpoetin - This is a really cool AU series that I read a while ago but I don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet. This could be a good read if you’re in the mood for some canon divergence or just something different. My favorite is the last installment of the series, which is also in second person POV. 

Weather With You by TheWuzzy - I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this one yet (or at least I don’t think I have) because it’s so good! This takes place during Annie’s Games and the characterization is wonderful. The dynamic between Finnick and Annie feels so organic and compelling. I really like this one. 

Rip Current - This work has been orphaned, which is why I didn’t include an author name, but it is complete. What I like about this one is that Annie’s voice and perception of the world is so unique. She’s very analytical here, which is not a trait usually attributed to her, so her character feels very fresh. This also takes place during Annie’s Games. 

Some self-promo here, but I figured I’d take advantage of the THG renaissance and mention that I’m mdr_24601 on ao3 and I write a ton of Odesta as well, so maybe there’s something on there you might like.

Buy Back the Secrets by Sundiscus (incomplete)

Tim Drake and Kon El centered!! OH MY GODS. I could rave on and on about this fic all day but I'll have to keep it brief. I've reread at LEAST 5 times. It's brilliant. The writing, the plot, the characterizations!! They are incredible. If I had to use a phrase to describe it, it would be "identity shenanigans and timkon" but that simplifies the absolute masterpiece that it is SO MUCH

Executive Assistant to the Batman by heartslogos (complete)

Tim is basically Bruce Wayne's assistant and is desperately trying to avoid letting them know that he knows. This is complete crack, but it is hilarious. The writing is so funny and It's what I need after a bad day or anything tbh. It may not be completely true to characters or whatever, but it makes up for it a thousand times over in spirit and the laughs it's produced from me.

I can rave about them all day because the dc/batfam fics I have seen them right are all so delicious and I devoured them far too fast and momggg its just so good. and I love their writing style <3

Reverse Robin AU by yellow_cabellero (complete)

I CANNOT DO THIS SERIES JUSTICE WITH MY WORDS. IT is a must read for me. The writer writes spectacularly and the characterization, even though its a reverse robin, feels on point, especially considering the circumstances (Im a huge believer in circumstances shape a person's personality, which is what I think occurs beautifully in all of these fics). They're just so GOOD.

Also this author has a STEPH FIC that is stunning. 10/10. Steph is a character that doesn't get the appreciation she deserves, so this fic was especially more touching for me. It was terrific seeing her girl bossing in the 90s (IT ALSO FELT SO PERIOD ACCURATE CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT). Not to mention, the author shows off character flaws in a believable manner and nobody is a Mary Sue and it's just EVERYUTHING IS JUST *chefs kiss* by them.

The Fishbowl by LordLuxury (complete)

This is Dick Grayson centered. THEY HAVE MADE A MASTERPIECE. I genuinely mean it. Dick is constantly trying to pull the family together, he is trying to be the glue as everything tries to go the opposite. LET THIS MAN HAVE HIS FAMILY. This had me in shambles. Bad Dad Bruce hurt me, but it was just so realistic. That's what gets me. The whole dynamics portrayed in The Fishbowl are so goddamn realistic and it feels so real. Everyone is flawed in their own way and its just... PLEASE READ IT I BEG OF YOU.

Love and Bruises by Acin_Grayson and Hoebiwan (complete)

Despite what the title may suggest, this is actually funny! Jason thinks Batman is abusing Bruce. And I just remember dying of laughter as I read this. Terrific! Would read and Will read again

Tennessee Outreach for Spider-Man and Friends by ciaconna

GREAT FIC. Harley (potato gun kid in one of the iron man movies for those who don't remember) gets an internship with Tony stark for college application reasons and its to help Spiderman. Peter Parker and Harley whateverhislastname is such a funny duo and they made the fic spectacular. Terrific writing omg.

Peter and the Jailbirds by beautifullights

I THINK THIS FIC HURT ME. I don't really remember much bc its been a year and a half, but I think my emotions remember because I feel mildly sad when I think about it. Peter is on the raft and bonds with the ex-avengers also on the raft. The premise of a teenager possibly spending the rest of his life in prison is terrible, but I swear this fic has funny moments and the conversations that occur are to die for because the WRITING. WHEW.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? by theskeptileptic

Tony survives and it's set after No Way Home. Where I'm pretty sure the only people dead are May and Pepper. Morgan saves the day by remembering her big brother (Im a sucker for big brother Peter arc). Peter is kind of a mini Tony in this one I think, which is such an interesting take. And it's such a coming home story and its just so beautiful.

mlb/dc crossover!! where marinate and Jon are retired superhero and go to college together! Great writing and plot with a good ending. Fluffy for the most part as far I as I can remember (it's been a year since I've read it so you know it's good if I can still remember)

Hired Hands by neighborhood_yogurt (incomplete)

Percy Jackson/ DC crossover!! It's been a while since I've read this one too but It's stuck with me. It's hilarious and I need to reread it but Percy is accidentally on Penguin's payroll because he's just a dumb blonde at heart, but it's okay we all love him. And Shenanigans occur. I don't remember exactly what happens so reminder to read this again for myself as well!

So yeah that’s what I have as of now and I think that could be fun to write

So like I really fuck with San/Seonghwa vampire moment?But like I really really fuck with the MC being the vampire... like there’s not a lot of one shots or series with the MC as the vampire so I think that would be cute and different. But also again, idk too much about vampire shit besides the cliche stuff and I’m sure I could take a different route with it rather than the usual uhhh shhh don’t tell anyone I’m a vampire or imma bite you kinda stuff. Or the we met in a club and imma suck your blood and you may or may not live kinda thing, even though those are my favourites and I read those all the time.

*Idk what name yet* (One shot) - I also really really like Harry Potter house AUs with maybe San or Wooyoung of Ateez... but I’ve never seen a full Harry Potter movie in my life (please don’t attack me) and I would have to like watch the movies and read parts of the books or like research stuff about the Harry Potter houses EXTENSIVELY (unless there’s anyone who wants to help me) but I rly like the whole the really pretty girl that everyone is scared of is in the Slytherin House and the cute shy boy in the Hufflepuff House has the biggest crush on her. And like she fucks with him bc he’s a Hufflepuff but she likes him too and just doesn’t know how to show it.

Hail Mary (one shot) - So like this is probably the most cliche on the list but the fucking Priests Daughter kinda shit is the best kinda shit out there. Like I would REALLY FUCK WITH A N Y member of ATEEZ LIKE FUCK! N e way- like the MC would be the priests daughter and like E V E R Y O N E knows who she is bc 1. She’s hot. And 2. She’s known for being like a goodie goodie. She’s the kinda girl that like has straight A’s in every class, doesn’t go to any parties, is at church all day every Sunday with her father. You wear a purity ring around your finger and all the boys just want to be the one to make you take it off. But like whichever member I pick (I’ve been wanting to write this for forever but I can’t pick a member from the ones listed above) actually likes you and isn’t just fucking you to get your ring.

Bookstore Girl (one shot) - So... I’ve had this idea for over a year (way before I started writing on Tumblr) it’s not rly that interesting or really original or anything but like one of my favourite songs is Bookstore Girl by Charlie Burg and immediacy after the first time I heard it I thought “I’m writing a Namjoon fic based off of this song” and I have yet to do it. If you haven’t heard it before I really recommend you do! In the song it says “Oh bookstore girl, I wonder what your name is” and “Reading only the books that you'd recommend to me... knowing more than just your name, it wouldn’t be the same... remaining fantasy, that’s more romantic to me” and it really gave me the inspiration for like maybe the MC as the other regulars that Namjoon likes so he’s always asking her for book Recs or they’d just talk about books but he doesn’t know her name and it’s practically killing him bc he has the biggest crush on her but literally knows nothing about her. So yeah I’ve personally never rly read a fic like this??? But yeah i think it would be really cute.

Groupie (One shot) - so like PH-1 is like one of my favourite artists and like he has a song called Groupie and I think it would be really interesting to incorporate it into a fic. I was thinking maybe like Jin/Taehyung BTS or like maybe Minhyuk Monsta X would go good with this kind of fic? So like in the song it’s constantly asking if their a Groupie “Are you a groupie? Tell me straight up is you a Groupie? I’m trynna do me, don’t waste my time is you a Groupie?” And like I think it would be kinda a twist if he knew the MC was a Groupie but he didn’t care bc he actually really liked her and is willing to have her around as a Groupie than not at all. But like eventually the MC would like... stop being a Groupie? And like they’d end up together fr fr, you know?

Red? (One Shot) - So yk those TikToks, yes I have a TikTok addiction don’t come at me, that are like yOu aNd yOur sOUlMaTe sEe tHe sAmE cOlOur aNd oNce yOu fAll iN lOve yOu seE eVery cOlOur? So yeah those kind of tiktoks are really creative and I think it would be a really cool fic idea. This one is obviously not my idea but I could try and like make a spin on it??? If that makes sense? But I was thinking maybe Mingi ATEEZ

*idk a name for this one either* (One shot) - So you know how there’s like a million fics that’s like tHe dEvIls sOn, which no hate bc those hit different, but like there’s never rly any where the MC is like the devils daughter yk? I’m thinking either Mingi or Yunho Ateez. So like imagine the Devil sending his daughter to go collect this “pretty boy” and bring him down. He was said to be protected by the angles so you had to get him wrapped around your finger. You take an interest in the “pretty boy” and bring him down with you and you want him for yourself, let’s just say the Devil isn’t happy...

Wings (one shot) - So I’m really into the whole Angel/Demon and Heaven/Hell kinda thing incorporated into fics and like... I’m kinda thinking like maybe Angel!Yunho/Wooyoung(kinda funny Ik) and like Demon!San/Seonghwa and like you’re one of the few “angels” that can go back and forth through Heaven and Hell. You’re half Angel and half Demon which is the reason you could travel back and forth. You usually spend most of your time on the lower half... it maybe or may not be because of a specific Demon with wings so dark you almost couldn’t see them... however, in heaven... the boy with the whitest wings you’ve ever seen makes you want to keep going back. Your wings are gray, more specifically a dark gray meaning you’re more demonic than angelic, which makes you stand out in either place. The more time you spend with the boy with the white wings... the darker they become...

사랑해 (Saranghae) (one shot) - So like Ik there’s a lot of like HighSchoolAUs and I really really like them but I wanna take a little spin on it and do like a transfer student kinda thing. So I’m thinking maybe like Yeosang ATEEZ? So like they come to America (where you’re from) from Korea and you’re assigned to be their like? Idk what it’s called? Just kinda the person to show them around and make them feel welcome. So it’s a little bit difficult because of the language barrier so you try your best to learn Korean and he try’s his best to learn some English so the two of you could talk. You’re not good at korean, at all, but you know when you hear that word... you feel the same way.

Sparklingseb’s Fic Rec!

Hi everyone! I’ve practically relied on fic recs for months when I want to read something new. I have been reading fics for over a year and these are some of the fics that I absolutely adored. Also a little forewarning, my favorite fics are usually multi-chapter fics that are either mcu based, college au’s, neighbor, or bodyguard fics, and i love a good slow burn, but I’ve read some fics that dont pertain to those preferences that are amazing. Some of these fics are not finished but I still loved them so I’m including them on here. These are in no particular order btw! PSA: Some of these fics have mature themes so I will mention that in the description of the fic!

When Everything’s Made to be Broken (I Just Want You to Know Who I Am) by @cassiopeiassky

When you inadvertently become a witness to a murder and are suddenly a target for death, it takes a specially skilled soldier and his team to keep you alive and your family protected.

Mature Themes- This has to me one of my favorite fics of all time (if not my definite favorite). The raw emotions shown throughout the fic as well as the character developments just made me feel every emotion known to man. I have read this fic more than 5 times because honestly I just cannot get enough of it. I think this fic has one of the most accurate portrayals of Bucky’s character out there. I can’t recommend this fic enough, please do yourself a favor and read it!

A Lesson in Love by @buckyywiththegoodhair

(College!AU) In which you’re assigned to write a story about romance, a subject you know nothing about, and Bucky, a hopeless romantic, offers you his assistance.

I adore this fic, and its not just because I love college!Bucky fics. Nicole’s writing style is absolutely gorgeous and the way that she portrays Bucky is like the perfect blend of 40′s Bucky and post tws!Bucky all without being in the MCU timeline. This fic made me sob and I have read it so many times that I’ve lost count. I honestly could go on about this fic forever so I’ll stop myself but just know that this is honestly a piece of art.

Bloody Roses by @the--sad--hatter

What you thought was a trapped squirrel turned out to be a super soldier in need. It’s not every day an Avenger turns up in your garden, in serious need of help but you deal with it as best as you can.

And then, to your surprise, he keeps showing up.

I found this fic relatively recently compared to the rest of the fics on this list, but I absolutely adored it. As a (mostly) major introvert I really related to this fic. I feel like I’ve never experienced a writing style quite like Kara’s and its absolutely beautiful. The descriptions in this work made me feel like I was there in the moment living through every moment. Really just a beautiful fic in general. 

Safe With Me by @bitsandbobsandstuff

When an unknown threat enters your life, protection is offered at the highest level. As Bucky Barnes comes into your life, the game changes, and you realize falling for the man tasked with keeping you safe is the last thing you expected.    

Mature Themes- Here is where my weakness for bodyguard!bucky comes into play. This fic absolutely killed me. Beautifully written, the descriptions are incredible, Bucky is a pain and I love it, all in all its a fic thats definitely worth your time to read. This is the fic that started my love for bodyguard!Bucky and It’s the one that I always seem to come back to. 

Written in the Stars by @prettyyoungtragedy

You’re the type of woman who is headstrong and fiercely independent. Heiress to a fortune and one of the most brilliant minds of the 21st century. Until you’re forced into witness protection. Your “Protection” turns out to be 220 pounds of dreamy, sassy, delightful Bucky Barnes. Whatever could go wrong?

Mature Themes- I mean come on, this fic is absolutely amazing. Yes I love bodyguard!bucky, but thats not the reason that I immediately fell in love with this fic. The reader is someone I really identify with and I think that everyone and their mother should read this fic at some point (and then read it again). I feel like basically all of the characters in this fic are portrayed perfectly and overall its just pure beauty.

Next Door by hayvocado (AO3)

You haven't exactly been in the best situation these last few years, what with your boyfriend being abusive, your job being hell, and you only having one friend in the terrifying city that is New York. One day you literally fall into the arms of a sweet stranger who doesn't seem to be much of a talker, and for whatever reason, you can't help but feel safe around him.

Mature Themes- Just a bit of a warning first, this fic has very prominent abuse descriptions both physically and mentally so if you are going to read it please be aware of that. I was hesitant to put this fic on the list because of the abuse themes, but the way Bucky’s character is written is something that I knew had to include here. The Bucky and reader interactions in this fic are like nothing I have ever read before and it is absolutely beautiful.

Battle-Scarred: Aftermath by Darke15 (AO3)

You remembered it different every time, and every time there was a new detail. Every time you were one step closer to putting together the missing pieces, one step closer to solving the puzzle.

This fic is unfinished but absolutely beautiful. The transitions between past and present and the interconnectedness of both are incredible. I haven’t read many fics like this before and I really enjoyed it. The descriptions and dialogue are truly a privilage to read. 

Stray or The Relative Merits of Leaving Your Window Open in Times of Acute National Crisis by BubbleBakerPenguinPie (AO3)

You live an ordinary, fairly boring, somewhat lonely life working for a branch of Stark Industries in Washington DC. The closest you ever got to superheroes and conspiracy theories was your best friend since childhood, Skye. But all this was set to change when a gaggle of masked men fall through your window the day the Helicarriers went down. Luckily for one of them, you have a propensity for taking in strays.

I adore this fic so much. The beginning few chapters are honestly one of my favorite things that I’ve ever read. I feel like you can picture every detail from this fic and the development of Bucky’s character is something that I find beautiful. Please read this if you have the chance, I promise you won’t regret it. Oh, also its unfinished so theres that, but its still 100% worth it.

Reylo Fic recs

Real talk: TLJ has ruined me and I’ve gone from a semi-functioning graduate student to a professional Reylo fangirl. It was only a matter of time before I fell down the fanfiction rabbit hole. Hard.

I read a ton of Reylo fanfiction at night under the covers while my husband is sleeping, and by request, I’m sharing a list of my personal faves.  Before we get started, some PSAs:

1. This list is a little spoiler-ish for description purposes. If you don’t want to know any details at all, it’s not the list for you!

2. All of my favorite stories are post-TLJ, since that’s when I joined the fandom. 

3. All the multichapters are WIPs, but I’m only listing stories that are well underway and post updates at least every 2-3 weeks. I know real life is a thing, and I’m so grateful for anything our amazing writers give us when they can, but updates are LIFE.  Below is actual footage of me every time I see an update on a story I follow. 

4. Every fic is rated M or E. I’m Raven Maiden, and I’m a smutaholic. Youngins, look away. 

5. There are so many talented Reylo writers out there. My list simply reflects my own tastes, and is in no way a reflection on the quality of other writers’ stories. Personally, I’m weak for post-TLJ canonverse, Renperor, Force Bond, Rey Says Yes / Empress Rey, Renperor-to-Ben Solo, and Reylo Marriage fics that are, ahem, for adults. Turn by ever-so-reylo (AO3) -@ever-so-reylo on tumblr.  Probably my favorite Reylo fic ever. I re-read it often and it blows me away every time. It’s perfectly paced, hot, moving, and I could literally see it happening in Ep. 9 if it wasn’t a Disney film. 

Yes by ever-so-reylo  (AO3)-  @ever-so-reylo on tumblr. TLJ ending divergence- Rey Says Yes. A funny, hot, and adorably sweet ride featuring Cheeky!Rey and Besotted!Ben who is mostly holding it together until he isn’t. (If you haven’t noticed, I’m a HUGE ever-so-reylo fan.. she’s a f-ing amazing writer, and human).

Grey by ocjones (AO3). Y’all, this fic is sexy AF. The heated push and pull between these two, and how they resolve it in “that” scene, and the ending, just.. hnnngh. 

Red-Blinking Dark by harpsichordist (AO3).  Oh god, it’s hot, and it hurts but it hurts so good, and GET IT TOGETHER BEN REY IS WAITING. 

the bones by spqr (AO3). I tend to shy away from Ben returning to the Resistance fics, just because it’s not what I see in my headcanon, but this fic is so well-written and definitely worth the exception. Also, that first time scene… *fans self* 

Multichapter (no particular order)

World in My Eyes by sasstasticmad  (AO3)- @mygrandmathinksimsassy on tumblr. I am so weak for Renperor and Resistance!Rey forbidden relationship fics. The build up for these two is superb, and the gorgeous, intimate moments they share (NOT just that, but fine, okay, that too) take my breath away. 

Sealed to Me by glitter_ature (AO3)- @galacti-core on tumblr. I love Enemies to Lovers, Scheming!Hux, No One Puts Leia in The Corner, and Jealous!Ben tropes, and this fic has all of those and more. This is a very tightly plotted fic that addresses virtually all of the hard questions remaining for Ep. 9. And the smut is on point!! 

The End of a String by Silvershine (AO3)- This is one of the “newer” fics on my list- not as many chapters- and as I said, I’m trying to keep this list to stories that are already long and consistently updated. But I couldn’t help myself. Controlled, scheming, patient, and possessive Renperor is so incredibly delicious intriguing. Mmm...

Tactical Surrender by destinies (AO3) @destinieswritten on tumblr. To be honest, I was a more casual reader of this fic at first, because the characters are a bit outside of my headcanon, but holy shit, in recent chapters it sneaked up, yanked out my heart,and now I’m addicted. The “surrender” in this title is so meta, it’s about physical, sexual, and emotional surrender, and I am HERE for it. 

Unbidden by Perry_Downing (AO3) - This story by the great @perrydowning  fills in the gap for Ep. 9. Guys, this is the Ben Solo we (and Rey) all need in our lives. It’s such a glorious slow burn to get there, and it leans right into all the tough issues with Leia, Hux, etc., with plenty of angst, romance, and smut along the way. 

The Bond That Ties Us by Moontear  (AO3). The sexiness in this story is OUT. OF. CONTROL. Deliciously Possessive!Ben, Unlucky Rival!Poe, Ridiculously-in-Love But Not Going to Take Any Shit!Rey, and hot, hot, hot smut. The smut in this fic is banging. *blushes for bad pun* Anyway, this story does take us places we’ve never seen before in Star Wars, and there are crazy intriguing new plot points, but it’s an original, it’s well written, it’s hot AF, and I’m so down for it all.

WHEW that’s all I’ve got, folks. Well, almost. There are some very promising fics I didn’t include because they are too new and I’m not sure how the story will pan out. I also excluded stories that haven’t been updated in over a month. If you’re curious, PM me. 

Lastly, I want to send love to ALL the Reylo fanfic writers out there. Y’all are amazing, from AU to canon-compliant to G to E rated and everything in between. Make sure to give your favorite authors lots of love with kudos and comments (if you have an AO3 account- I’m still waiting for mine)!! They deserve it.

Why I Didn’t Rec Your Fic/Reblog Your Post

On weekends I read fanfiction and fill my tumblr queue, and this is something that has been troubling me for a bit, so I wanted to make a post about it. If you wrote a gen fic and I didn’t rec it, you might wonder why, since I rec a LOT of gen fics. I also reblog a LOT of things. I don’t see everything in the fandom, but I see a lot. I go through the Voltron tag on tumblr every day, and I check the gen category and hurt/comfort tags on AO3 two or three times a week. A lot of times when people rec things to me, I’ve already seen or read it. And that’s okay! Still rec things to me! I am not all-knowing.

But I want to be transparent, and I don’t want anyone to feel left out, so here’s kind of some guidelines on why I like what I like and why I don’t like what I don’t like. You can skip this post if you’re not interested by pressing J. It’s gonna be a little long.

Why didn’t maychorian rec my fic or reblog my post?

1. Maybe I didn’t see it. Like I said, I see a lot, but I am not omniscient and omnipresent. When things were slowing down a month before the new season came out, I was digging further and further back in the archives, though, so there’s a chance I’ll get to it eventually, even if no one else points it out to me. I also check other rec lists and bookmarks for things I’ve missed, and I find a lot of good stuff there. It’s been especially difficult lately, because January is the busiest month of the year at my job, and this last week has been especially hellacious for me for reasons that are too esoteric to get into. Self-recs to me are okay, too, but please keep in mind that my time is limited, and I might not get to it as quickly as you’re hoping. I do my best to respond to asks and messages and everything, but I am but a humble fan with a full-time job and an obsession for this series that keeps me up too late at night on many, many occasions

2. Maybe it didn’t fit my interests, at least not the first time I saw it. Right now I’m reading a really excellent Pidge-centric gen fic that I want to rec to you guys. It came up in my gen searches multiple times before I started reading it, because there was just too much other stuff on my plate that I wanted to get to first, like that Lance hurt/comfort thing that looked promising. (There have been a lot of those.) Sometimes fics sit in an open tab on my browser for a LONG time before I get to them. It’s not a reflection on the fic, usually, just a function of my biases and time limits.

3. Here’s where it gets a little harder to fix. Maybe I didn’t like your characterization. The quickest way to make me decide not to rec something is to write the characters in a way I disagree with. And I’m not going to call you out on that. I’m not going to leave a review telling you you’re wrong. You can do whatever you want! I’m not the characterization police. I don’t want to suppress anyone’s creativity. If you want to write a version of the characters that doesn’t fit the version in my head, that’s OKAY. I’ve said multiple times that canon is playdough. You do what you want with it, and I will do my best to never, ever put a damper on anyone else’s fandom experience.

But the worst version of this, for me, is when the other paladins are made into bad guys in order to make Lance the perfect Woobie. Look, I love Lance, and I love hurt/comfort, both physical and emotional. I love reading and writing him suffering from his canonical homesickness, being tortured, being insecure, being depressed, getting sick, getting injured, all of that. But I draw the line at his teammates being cruel to him, or even overly neglectful. Misunderstandings and mistakes are fine. Those happen in real life. I’ve written those a lot. But even things like Shiro going through the list of paladins and praising everyone for the good job they did and NOT Lance... Look, that’s not canonical. Shiro praises Lance. He’s a good leader. I don’t think he’s aware of just HOW insecure Lance is and how much he needs to be validated, but he’s not going to neglect Lance’s needs like that. It’s a subtle thing, but I don’t like it, so I won’t rec it.

4. Maybe there were technical problems. Maybe the story was good and the characterization was fine, but the grammar and spelling was just too egregious. On those kinds of fics, I might leave a comment and kudos, because I want to encourage younger writers to keep trying and keep getting better. But I might not rec it just because I want my rec list to only have things that I think other people will be able to enjoy without reservation. Please don’t take it personally! Keep writing! Keep growing! I’ll keep reading your stuff, probably, and eventually I might rec it.

5. Maybe it was focused too hard on an OC. Again, there’s nothing wrong with OCs. It is a GOOD THING to play with canon and add your own spin and experiment with your writing style. I encourage everyone to write OCs if they want to, even Mary Sues. Maybe especially Mary Sues. Wish fulfillment is a good and healthy part of your entertainment experience. Enjoying yourself is a fantastic thing and you should be proud of it, even if very few people read or kudos or comment. But for me, I’m in fandom because I already love the canon characters. Those are who I want to see and who I want to see expanded upon. I want more LANCE. More Hunk and Shiro and Pidge and Keith and Allura and Coran. Obviously OCs added to a story focusing one of the canon main characters are great and wonderful and encouraged, but if your main character is an OC, sorry, I’m just not interested. Please don’t take it personally.

6. Maybe the fic or the post was too salty. I don’t like to spread negativity. Sometimes, sure, the show needs to be criticized a bit. But all those posts right after Season 2 about how Lance and Hunk didn’t get enough screentime, and the fat jokes were too much, and so on and so forth ad nauseum? No thanks. I like meta. I write and reblog meta, even critical meta. But there is a point at which you have to wait and see what the show does in the future. Yes, I wanted more screentime for Lance, too. But he did get good moments! He did have a time to shine! So did Hunk! And I’m sure there’s more development in the future. So excessive saltiness, especially in tumblr posts but also sometimes in AO3 tags or notes, is a big turn-off for me, and I probably will not rec it or reblog it. Also discourse. Do not agree with it, do not like it, will not encourage it.

And that’s it. If I see it, it fits my interests, the characterization agrees with mine, there are few or no technical problems, and it’s focused on one of the characters I love, especially Lance, I’ll probably rec it. Again, I hope I didn’t discourage anyone or step on any toes. But I hope you understand my process a little better now. This has been a probably useless PSA from maychorian.
