also can people not start saying that aziraphale and crowley are toxic? :((((( I've seen it a few times and it's heartbreaking.
what I love is feeling sad about their conflict and feeling sad about gay people in the same way I got sad about straight ships when I was younger, and didn't really understand gay people. I'm not sad bc there's some veiled homophobic thing happening about why they 'can't be together'. I feel such a pleasant sadness because it's just another conflict and miscommunication! I'm sad and it's sad without having to use homophobia to make it so!
it's sad and it's wonderful bc straight people have gotten to see this sort of relationship conflict play out with characters like them for years and years and years, and now I get to see it with characters like me!! all in a story about the beauty of Earth and the value of humanity and why life is worth living and love is worth everything!!!
random comparisons under the cut
P.S. maybe people won't care for these comparisons, but it's sad in the way that Catra and Adora are, growing up in cruelty and not understanding the other's point of view. It's sad in the way that Pearl and Rose Quartz are, both loving each other but when Rose moved on Pearl couldn't, because she only knew herself in servitude, and had to learn to love herself outside of that. obvs pearl and rose didn't have a happily ever after but this isn't about that. it's the use of romantic tropes typical in straight stories applied to gay people.

I see some people come out of the woodwork again and talking about how super terrible the Fox X-Men movies are. Especially - the absolute valid and most annoying point - how the women were nerfed and underutilized. Biggest criticism, forever a big stain. But I'd argue that X-Men '97 still fell into that same trap. Better? Yes. Holding back still? Also yes.
Most of all this hit Storm. Once again. In part this is thanks to where we are with streaming. Tight seasons, few episodes, not much room to breathe. All that while the team pulled nuggets from so many storylines that have spanned decades. There is very limited time and the biggest casualty is the loss of emotional character beats.
Depowered Storm is a well-known moment from the comics. But the reason why it is looked back on fontly is because Storm still had things to do and say and found herself in new ways, including as leader of the X-Men regardless. Readers followed her for quite some time in that state and could wrap their heads around the situation. The beginning and ending of that journey are wonderfully adapated with Lifedeath, but there is no middle. And apart from those focused episodes Storm does... very little.
They do give her a due badass moment early, even mention her status as an Omega Level mutant (won't explain the concept, easiest yet not totally accurate way is to say the best they can be with the power they have and it's off the charts). There is a case of tell, not much showing going on overall though. And in the finale when Cyclops decides it's time to stop fighting he looks at Storm, she gets it, but you have to be a superfan to find the little nuance, to see how this is very much in-character and it does make sense. Storm has a few very wise lines, something she is known for, a few pew-pew-lightning moments, but sidelined. So hard. Not even allowed to talk about what she feels seeing the footage from Genosha.
For non-comic readers a fun fact: in the recent run of X-Men, the Krakoa era, mutants terraformed Mars. Omega level mutants. Of course Storm was there. Prominently. That was a huge thing. The Krakoa era is ending right now and a new relaunch under the banner From the Ashes is coming. And just this week Marvel put out a teaser that "Earth's Mightiest Mutant" would join the Avengers roster. They had buzz for a day with lots of guesses (the word mighty can be interpreted in a few ways) and guess what, it's Storm. (Although I think going from being the Voice of the sol system in intergalactic matters to Avenger is a downgrade.) Meanwhile '97 Storm barely fought in the big climactic battle. Huh.
A tv show has more time than one single movie. That's the whole reason why watching shows is awesome. A narrative that builds over time and can follow some sidepaths. But not anymore. X-Men '97 would never give us a fun little Christmas special, there is no room. And that's sad.
I enjoy the way they went with Madelyne Pryor. But it all happened in one episode and then Jean was a bit angry at Scott, who for once didn't do anything wrong in this bizarre situation imho. They ignored one of the worst moments from his comic history (thank you so much), gave Madelyne a happy ending (for five seconds), but also left no breathing room. The best they did however was the way Jean struggled with the emotions. She remembers things she wasn't physically there for and her love for Nathan is still just as real. What a blessing. So it makes sense that when she fights Nathan she holds back.
Telling stories that involve Jean Grey can be very tricky. With every super powerful being the threat can't just be punchable. So I get that the Cosmic Birb sighting was limited to one appearance. But what happens? Oh, right, Jean faints. I would be here for a few scenes where Jean explains how this vast power is still overwhelming. That there is a fear of tearing earth itself apart. But what we get is Jean powering up, exhausting herself, powering down and then not being strong enough (even next to Storm) to keep Asteroid M from falling. No, no, we needed Magneto's power or else... which, I enjoy the group effort, but I would have at least appreciated a little "we almost got it, if only we had this tiny bit more" and not making it seem like Magneto is the one and only. They pushed the asteroid in place for him to pull, okay? Please. They should have shown how he could not have done that alone.
The show does have a bias super in favor of Magneto. Without even discussing that his plan is stupid. It comes from an emotional torment I understand. I understand him. I understand Rogue and Sunspot joining him. It's still dumb as hell. And within the three part finale there is no room for any debate and a lot of flip-flopping. Which, again, as a comic reader I can put under a microscope and tell you how this makes sense with a nice good-will reading. It does. But it's buried under the high octane beats. (There wasn't even room to take in what happened to Logan. Honestly I like Logan as a character, but the joke of him being everywhere is not even a joke and there is a certain fatigue and the way Logan was not the focus of '97 makes me appreciate the show even more. I like him! It's somewhat hilarious how the Adamantium pull was the cliffhanger shockfest and then... kinda nothing... of course I know S2 has a lot to pull from with that.)
Speaking of the ladies, the way bias is showing and how two things can be true at once and interpretations can vary - let me ramble on about Rogue in all of this.
On the surface oh I can't complain. My blorbo had things to do. Things to punch, lines to cross, angst to go through - I was fed. I will rewatch so many moments for years to come. But if you want to be cynical about this, Rogue's arc revolved around a man. No, two men. They shoved a decade long on-again, off-again romance from the comics into the show that already has five seasons and never remotely hinted at this. They started with a quiet Magneto and Rogue moment so we can see jealous Gambit. And when she makes a choice after a dance and kiss, Gambit dies. The one she wants. But also Magneto seemingly for a bit. And Rogue rampages.
Equality win: Man successfully put in the fridge so the woman gets to soar. Rejoice! (This is the perfect Rogue/Gambit dynamic though; you are depicting the couple wrong if he iesn't the one with a lovestricken face enjoying to be held in her strong arms. He pines, she gets the manpain moments.)
You could absolutely argue that Rogue's whole motivation is tied to dudes. But if you want to get over this you can look closer at what she says. She remembers Remy. She does this for him. But also every other dead mutant from Genosha. We did not get to see what this would have looked like, but when she chooses Magneto, she also chooses Genosha. She chooses a place at the table, the whole "Queen" deal. And when she joins him again in the finale, she talks about "no more dead mutants" (oh sugar, he's about to destroy the world with everybody). There is just so little time it gets lost. No time for nuance and showing the amount of survivor's guilt she feels. Unlike Storm and Jean though, she is allowed to let loose. She was ready to kill. And disregarding what came next, she dropped Trask from that rooftop.
The show is extremely in favor of Magneto and Rogue, and still doesn't have enough time left to give them the right build-up, because ten episodes isn't enough. Love that Morph got to confess their feelings for Wolverine, yet I'm sure a lot of the audience is baffled with his shapeshifting-power-duplicating powerset. Something that was really nice was the journey Jubilee and Sunspot took together. The way he went from hiding his powers, coming out, being betrayed by his family, giving in to rage for a moment, ultimately wanting to and saving people - true heart of the story.
Okay, this is long and like the show has a dozen different points without following through on one single issue. Ha! I enjoyed every second of it. I have bought monthly X-Men comics for over 30 years now, they are always with me, but these past few weeks have reignited the spark. 10/10 show, highly recommend. But can people please not pretend as if they did everything right? Also with so many stupid, stupid, highly stupid things that have happened within the pages of X-Men stories... just chill.

Mmmmm. Not disputing that its bad on indigenous peoples. Just have a few qualifiers.
That wasn't the finale they wanted, they had the wedding scheduled, and the producers were just "Fine you can do this, but we are through, by the way, you have three episodes, not seven." That was supposing an entire season more and half the season left. Hollywood and Cartoon Network had been set in their ways stubbornly for decades. Steven Universe, and Rebecca Sugar particularly, broke that illusion that there would be a huge lashback and drop in ratings. They always feared losing the evangelical viewers, but didn't bank on just how few liberals had stuck around and how quick they could be called back.
Wouldn't say being critical of it is a red flag... for the right reasons, without other signs there. You know as well as I it was important enough for assassination posts from fkn fashy gamer bros to still be coming out the damned woodworks to this day, so I hope you can learn not to take our defensiveness so personally. I'm sure there's foaming mouths out there over your critique too, but not as much as you seem to expect. It's counterproductive to fight amongst ourselves is all. Yes it did good. Yes it could have been way better. Theres a quiet majority at play here. People are tired of TALKING politics. They want action.
So few indigenous peoples remain in this country, have the vote, have power or even majority land ownership on their own already pittances of territory allowances, that people like Rebecca Sugar can conveniently forget about us to push their own narrative. People like me. I barely knew my grandmother. I'm basically white. She was seperated from her family at schooling age. So much was lost. I barely feel permitted to my heritage. Not trying to make this about myself. Explaining where my argument originates.
But back to the topic at hand... Garnet and Pearl both have been known to actively wash out hard topics out of the narratives they give to Steven, a fifteen year old child, and the people of the town, who "wouldn't understand." Just because it wasn't addressed doesn't mean it's sanctified. Excuses I know. More like plausible deniability than actual points scored.
There has been a whole lot of things like that to apply The Letter From A Birmingham Jail to lately. The wait, wait, wait! The white moderates cry, and they almost always mean never is a better time than now, kind of thing. I hear you. But you do have to keep in mind just how much of a fight it was to put as much representation in the show as there was. Like don't stop the good fight, but don't erase and belittle it either. Garnet being allowed to kiss at their wedding was a helluva step way too long in the waiting for what it constitutes. Its just a damn kiss. Grand scheme of things its SAD it was so big a moment. Still gonna remember it with fondness.
That episode being one of the ones Cartoon Network demanded, to be able to play in any order and still have little lost. Filler was the compromise, and that columbus day episode was... truly unfortunate, honestly.
Between that episode, the Human Zoo occupants being primarily of indigenous colors confirming they did exist (also that THEY were in the Zoo), and several other small things including most of Mayor Dewy's scenes in general, really leave a "Just don't think about it" vibe on the tongue.
You can like a thing without approving of every moment of it. Steven Universe was a bloatedly boring show for the most part. You weren't introduced to the "main mystery" and the actual question, until things were in much fuller swing and closer to its Big Reveal than its first hints that there WAS a mystery.
Was the kiss worth the show imploding? YES. ABSOLUTELY. Was it great for every subject all the time? NOT REALLY EVER.
Until we do start marching in the streets for representation, justice and tolerance again, this incrimentalism reflex of these stagnant institutions is what we're going to be up against.
So I've been thinking about Steven Universe again and I've been wondering
Where are the indigenous peoples???
Like
Really
The show is clearly set in the modern USA, so where are the native people? It's never mentioned.
So one of three things would have happened,
Either A: The crystal gems allowed colonization to happen
B: The crystal gems helped the colonizers
Or C: Indigenous people have been erased in the context of the show and you're just not supposed to think about it
All joking aside, it's definitely that last one. You're not supposed to think about that, this is made clear when native people still aren't referenced in the colonialism episode
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
There's even references to colonialism in other places such as this photo
Tumblr media
"But it's not that deep" YES IT IS
Just because colonialism doesn't go beyond "haha funny hat and boats" to you doesn't mean that's actually what it is in reality
Erasing an entire marginalized group in your show just because you don't want to think about them is blatant racism
And I think the creators just sweeping by and expecting everybody to not consider the implications of American history in SU is just the most blatant white liberal shit imaginable
And honestly? Coming from a show where the main climax is just talking it out with genocidal colonizers? I can't say I'm exactly shocked.
So hey, if you think being critical of Steven Universe is a quote unquote '''red flag''' because it '''did so much for LGBTQ+ rep!!!''' Shut your colonizer ass up for once.

I know you're not on Twitter much, but I follow the DeanCas Every Hour account, which is usually fun cuz I can see Dean/Cas content on my timeline consistently. But the account has once again reached the end of season 14, and I just wanted to vent a little, because it has gotten to where Dean talks about Cas being "dead to him" and also wanting Jack dead.
It drives me insane cuz without fail, all these ppl start complaining about how Dean's harsh words to Cas were just "writers trying to start unnecessary drama" and how Dean was "out of line" for saying those things. And then they'll also say Dean can't really be Jack's dad, because he wanted him dead, and how could you possibly be okay with Dean saying that to Jack??
And I just want to scream. I remember those opinions going around when the episodes first aired, and they still come up again and again.
I just can't believe ppl can literally be so bad at critical analysis, and also have absolutely no empathy for the horrible situation Dean was in. It drives me up the wall every time 😤 sorry to come at you with this lol I just hate how something can be SO CLEAR, but it's like ppl seem to go out of their way to find the worst possible interpretation.
Eh... Confession: I'm always on twitter. Like, more than I'm on tumblr lately, even. But-- and this is key-- I do not do fandom on twitter. I follow some friends that I made through fandom, sure, and will even reply to their tweets sometimes. But 99% of my experience on twitter is Not Fandom. Because fandom twitter suuuuuucks. For this reason ^^
To be honest, I don't really remember those opinions ever going around, because I don't follow people who lack critical thinking skills, I guess? I don't know, maybe these are newer people to fandom who made their assumptions on the characters based on the last few seasons only? People who have never gone back to the start for a more nuanced rewatch of the entire series?
All of that aside, everyone is entitled to their opinions about the thing. Folks don't control their own personal reactions to stuff. That doesn't mean I have to engage with them, though. Because yeah, sometimes people do run circles around themselves to find the worst possible take on a situation, or yank it out of context of the literal 15 year character arc and use it as an excuse to invalidate all the rest. They're not interested in discussing the character arc as a whole, or understanding what drove him to this shocking extreme. Because it WAS shocking, and painful, and entirely justified by the surrounding narrative and the entire arc of the series. I don't particularly like these sorts of people, so I tend to avoid them.
For years I've experienced the frustration of making long essay posts on tumblr, and still having people come at me with "well, actually you neglected to mention xyz thing, so your opinion is invalid" type responses. Like, sorry I didn't double the length of the essay by including 50 references to other things I've already written and nine standard disclaimers to validate my personal read of a thing that's already 5k words long. If I have that much difficulty having rational conversations on tumblr, imagine how much worse it is on twitter where everything moves 1000x as fast, in two sentence chunks, where anyone can reply with almost no effort (and often do before their brains have time to engage), bringing out even worse hot takes based on emotional kneejerk reactions. Twitter is just an exceptionally, objectively horrible place to have nuanced meta conversations.
When I do see a fandom thread on twitter, I typically just keep scrolling, because nothing good comes of reading the replies. (and this goes for pretty much any fandom, not just spn...) The very nature of twitter just invites all the disk horses to come screaming out of the woodwork, and there's no telling who might see it or reply and pile on with all the worst takes. I'll just keep my fandom stuff over here in the quiet little dungeon I've built and stocked on tumblr.
I don't know who these people are, so I'm personally not inclined to give their arguments any sort of personal emotional weight, either, you know? there's no rule of the internet that demands I engage with those sorts of people. So I don't.

Femininity and Bridgerton
So 27 days ago a lovely anon said that they’d be glad to hear my thoughts on femininity and Bridgerton, and since I’m now finally free from school I decided to stop playing Genshin Impact and binging Disney movies and actually do something.
This is going to probably be very long (spoilers it’s 1,800 words long), so more under the cut.
So, a few things. Firstly I am specifically talking about Bridgerton, as the way that femininity is portrayed in media is a very complex and arduous topic. Secondly this is obviously just my opinion and you can absolutely disagree, even tell me if you do I love listening to different perspectives. Thirdly I’m talking about a show that is very heteronormative (the painter and Benedict aside as I’m focusing mostly on Daphne in this post), and presents a very specific part of straight, cis, upper class femininity. So keep that in mind as well. Also as I’m going to be talking about patriarchy, femininity, and masculinity I know that there might be a few TERFs that crawl out of the woodwork and just… don’t. This isn’t for you and while I’m at it please go read some actual feminist texts. Also I know that this is a period piece but I will be addressing that don’t worry.
Also I am going to be talking about that one scene so trigger warning I’m going to be talking about sexual assault.
Also full Bridgerton season one spoilers.
----
So, all that set up out of the way, let’s talk about femininity in the Bridgerton series.
A good deal of Bridgerton focuses on the ways in which women are often confined by their role as women in society, as well as how they subvert that role for their own gains. This is used well in some cases, such as when the Viscountess uses the network that is forged between servants and women of the upper class to subvert Daphne’s marriage to Nigel Berbrooke. Being a period piece with a (mostly) diverse cast it also allows for women of color, specifically black women, to be portrayed in a very feminine light, where in society at large they are usually not allowed to inhabit such a space. However in attempting to subvert the status that women often occupied in Regency England the show accidentally reinforces views of femininity and its value.
Let’s talk about Eloise and Daphne. Eloise is very outspoken about the difficulties that comes with being a woman in society, wishing to break out of the confines of femininity. Daphne, on the other hand, wishes to stay within the traditional woman’s sphere, get married, have children, run a household. And while in text these two women often debate the meaning of their position as women, each making very valid points about their status and how they’re confined by it, the framing makes it seem that Eloise’s position is ultimately the “better” one.
Full disclosure, Eloise is my favorite Bridgerton character. I love her outspokenness, her determination to make something out of her life, the fact that she attempts to make the oppression of the society around her explicit. However I think the way she is framed as this, for lack of a better term, “girlboss” in the making is often reductive. The show seems to have this idea that Daphne is in some ways inferior in goal to Eloise. That is, Eloise’s value isn’t that she is an ambitious person whose status as a woman hampers said ambition, but rather that she is in some ways morally and intellectually superior to Daphne by rejecting her femininity and repressing qualities that are considered less masculine and thus lesser.s It presents this idea of women’s empowerment wherein one is only empowered if they deliberately step out of traditional femininity, either in appearance or in life path, rather than confronting a society that sees femininity as inferior. Daphne’s wish to continue in the traditional sphere of womanhood is somehow lesser, and she only becomes truly empowered later in the series when she becomes more aggressive (we’ll talk about that later).
That Eloise has her own book where she presumably falls in love and gets married makes this all the more confusing. Does she then lose her intellect and her status as an empowering woman? The messages feel very mixed. In portraying Eloise as enlightened for actively resisting the woman’s sphere and Daphne as needing to learn to be more “assertive” to gain said enlightenment, the show accidentally presents femininity as inherently passive, inferior to the assertion that is more traditionally masculine. This is something that modern period dramas often fall into. Empowered women are only empowered by attempting to transcend their femininity, to become more masculine. The bottom line isn’t to present women and femininity as equal in all ways to men and masculinity, but femininity is something reductive that must be shed to truly become equal.
Since we’re talking about Daphne I want to examine her character arc within this lens as well. Daphne is adamant that she wants a love-match. She is also very aware of the importance of presentation, as well as the importance of reputation. This is a very solid foundation, as is a way where Bridgerton taps into the complexity of the role of women in regency society in a good way. However as the show goes on this complexity seems to fade in favor of making Daphne, again I’m sorry, a “girlboss”. This is made explicit in the scene in which Daphne violates Simon’s consent, as well as the way in which this act is framed.
Now you can tell immediately from the framing of the scene in which Daphne violates Simon’s consent what this is supposed to be interpretated as. From the music to the triumphant looks on Daphne’s face, this is supposed to be a moment in which Daphne has finally gained control of her life. And yet in doing this, and in presenting this whole scene as a result of Simon’s “betrayal” – and thus something his has to take the blame for – the show is making a value judgement. Daphne can only become strong by becoming “assertive” (ie aggressive) to the point of violating someone’s consent.
The topic of rape culture is a very long and arduous one which I will not be diving into, but I do wish to point to the fact that men are supposed to be aggressive, both sexually and otherwise. Men are the ones who always “want it”, who are uncontrollable, and who are willing to be aggressive to get what they want. This toxic idea of sex and masculinity is what I felt Daphne dipped into during this scene, and instead of presenting it as horrifying or a betrayal on Daphne part, it is presented as the climax of her character arc. I believe a showrunner once said that it was imperative to the “education” of Daphne Bridgerton. Thus is Daphne’s strength no longer her determination to be happy within the sphere she has been placed in by patriarchy, but her willingness to take back her life, no matter the cost. And yes this could’ve been a message about how men are also assaulted, but that is not at all what the showrunners wanted you to get out of this scene.
Lastly I want to touch on the men in the Bridgerton universe, because the devaluation of femininity also affects men no less than it does women. All the men in the Bridgerton universe are either bad people or rakes. Name me one (1) man in the Bridgerton universe who is presented as feminine, either in appearance or personality. And no femininity is not the same as being gay, the painter is not feminine. To be a man worthy of screen time or romance in the Bridgerton universe one must be as traditionally masculine as possible, and ready to make that your defining character trait.
Now I know that this is a large romance novel issue, as someone who has read three of the Outlander books I am unfortunately aware of how romance novels fall into this derivative state. But just because something is common that doesn’t mean it is any less worthy of criticism. The argument that it’s simply being “period accurate” is also something I don’t accept. Yes the regency era was incredibly patriarchal, but that does not mean that the women within it were helpless and could only break out of that helplessness by rejecting their own femininity. Jane Austen is a classic example, but I will also point to women such as Elizabeth Gaskell, the Bronte Sisters, and George Eliot in terms of English women who were highly intelligent and worthy of acclaim despite still associating themselves with their status as women in society. For a broader historical view I’d also like to present Catherine the Great and Empress Josephine who, despite being viewed in an often very derivative manner by the men around them, rose to great prominence and power.
In the end this is a larger societal issue and not one that my post will magically fix. But I will say this: we need to stop telling women and girls that the only way to get rid of patriarchy is to reject femininity. In doing so we say that masculinity is indeed the better trait, that by repressing one’s emotions and one’s femininity one can attain equality. We also need to stop telling men that the only way to ensure their own value to be aggressive, to tap into that toxic masculinity which we spoon feed them from birth. This hurts everyone, men, women, non-binary people. It makes the world a worse place and only when we stop trying to wiggle our way out of femininity and actually acknowledge its status as equal to masculinity will we achieve this.
I believe Bridgerton wanted to do that, wanted to present the complexities and anxieties of women living in a patriarchal world and the way in which they can subvert that world to their advantage. However it falls into the same trap it seems to be attempting to get out of, and at the end of the day one is left with a sense of vapidness. Though I may like Bridgerton (so much so that I binge watched the series twice and am even considering reading the books) I think that we need to acknowledge its flaws, because only then will we be able to move forward and make media that is more enjoyable, more nuanced, and ultimately better in terms of expectations and norms.
Like I said this is a very complicated topic, but I hope I got my point across well. Thank you if you read all the way through this and I hope you have a lovely day!

Heads Up, and an Update:
Hello! I uh, come out of the woodworks today to just, give a bit of an update... on stuff.
First of all I’d like to adress a little thing, that I think I’m obligated to mention:
A few weeks ago I dropped a post with some POTC AU stuff with She-Ra, and after that it gained a good bunch of notes, likes and reblogs, and subsequently earned me a handful of new followers.
Before anything else I’d love to thank all of you people who rebbloged and then followed, thank you. However, I really think I should share with you the following:
Although I USED to be a big fan of She-ra And The Princesses of Power, I no longer am. In fact, whenever I DO share anything related to She-Ra these days, It’ll mostly be posts dealing with Heavy criticism of the show, it’s Creators and the fandom, in general.
Tied to that, It’s VERY likely that in the future you won’t see much, if any at all, content related to She-Ra coming from me. I say all these things because I don’t want anyone to have a sucky time, following me and my endeavors.
HAVING SAID ALL THAT ABOUT SHE-RA! I’d also like to share to the people that have been following me for longer:
I am indeed trying to not only cut away a little bit from social media and fandom spaces, but I’m also doing my best to diminish the presence of She-Ra in my life, as much as is possible. Like I’ve said before, never in my life have I been so affected by a piece of media like a cartoon show. Perhaps NOW, more than ever because storytelling and cartoon making is something I want to dedicate my life to, but I digress.
Tied to this, I wanted to talk a little bit about that big looming project I’d teased before with a big ol’ poster. That “For The Honour Of She-Ra” comic, which would’ve been a sort of Fanon re-telling of She-Ra’s fifth season.
I’d love to say it’s not completely out of the question, but it’s in a brittle Limbo, right now. While I would love to actually work on it, She-Ra as a concept, as a property and as a creative outlet isn’t very much to my enjoyment, anymore. Like, sometimes just staring at these character and remembering all they used to mean, and all the horrid things they mean now? It’s exhausting. So it’s VERY likely, it won’t progress any further. That’s all I wanted to comment on that. Regardless, I still am so VERY GREATFUL, for all the support I received for it, when I first announced it. Thank you all.
Uuuuuuuuuuuh, ON OTHER NEWS!
Still stuck on Season 1 of Kipo, haven’t found the time to watch season 2, But I was still having a fun time with it, so I think I’ll keep enjoying it.
Started watching The Owl House, It’s SUPER fun, reminds me a LOT to Gravity Falls, and I’m ok with that.
It’s very unfortunate, that I don’t really have the desire to participate in fandom on EITHER of those, because I can already tell, a BIG sector of SPOP fandom is migrating into them, LMAO, And I, for real, have no Interest in interaction of any kind. So, I’m being a little slow on it.
AND THAT WAS ALL, that I wanted to share. Still out here, still making stuff FOR ME, this time, No fandoms for atleast a year, jesus christ. Also my new semester is coming in fast, so. Yeah.  o7
OH REAL QUICK, I have Tumblr saviour installed now, And I’ve blacklisted pretty much all words relating to She-Ra, by now, so if you make anything shera related and tag me, or something, CHANCES ARE, I won’t be able to see it. so uh, message me, if u need too sekrjgbksjergbkserg, That was all.

Preparations For a Body That Will Accept Anything
At the 3-story leather bar, I was took with the passing memory of the woman at the suburban street art fair who sold prints of her digital collages which mostly layered closeups of leaves with washed out details of a shiny face or medium shot of a nude body, turned away.  “These are all digital collages made with my original images” she explained.  A lily pad leaf with holes and computerized discoloration was placed over the muscled ass and lower back of a blonde man with his profile clipped in atmospheric glow filters.  I completed the perimeter of her booth, which stood out from the woodworking/practical crafts and cityscape photos on wraparound canvas that dominate these kinds of events. In her space, a nymph-like quality and color palette you might associate with the lives of nymphs predominated, communicating the highest rigor of a paganistic fashion shoot.  She turned to a woman approaching her booth and said “these are all digital collages made with my original images.”
The 3-story leather bar had its own approach to nature.  Importantly, it was named after an animal, and the animal most critical to the identity of the United States.  Conventional urinals were replaced with a long trough, bringing to mind rustic farm life and the day to day experience of domesticated animals.  High on the priority list of the men filling the space was the task of infinite looking around.  Evaluating a face and body in a swarm of people and occasionally speaking to the face and body evaluated.  This was prime nature: silent looking, but not silent in fact as usually a mouth accentuated the other direction of an eye.  A man approached me leading with his lit phone, “has anyone ever told you you look like him?,” the image of a famous and often arrested young actor on his screen.  “Yes, a few times.”  Being spoken to is obviously less interesting than silent looking in a place like this.  Humans enjoy staring at animals, at vistas, at trees, I won’t accept they abuse with curiosity alone, ahahaha, nature’s voyeur, “I’m gay” I thought, as an older man attempted to place his hand in my pee stream before it reached the piss trough.  Our eyes didn’t meet before I said “no” in the tone of disciplining a pet and jerked my cock away.  I did not want his hand in my pee stream and did not even give myself a chance to think about it.
When I was able to observe it, I observed that my neighbor Rob went out a lot.  I usually preferred to stay in and experienced going out by not moving and then by watching people move for me.  Some part-memorized quote on the longevity of the action movie guided this habit of mine, that action movies remain popular because they convince a viewer’s mind that they themselves are catapulting their bodies then holding a gun sideways, punching a face that deserves it until its new form is noticeable, screaming at an approaching animal villain or rock.  The action movie takes our bodies back to a primeval routine of violent exercise and the bodies react by pretending we did something crucial. My experience of watching men reveal both their well-exercised and freely ignored bodies through a sexual broadcast was equivalent to being in the same room as a TV showing the poorly received 9th season of a popular police drama watched by a cousin I hadn’t seen in 6 years, its audio annihilating the interesting chirps of two sparrows outside the window, that I turn and look at directly only once before I decide it’s time to leave the room.  But in some cases such broadcasts were enough surreptitious movement for my body to feel a moment free from the control of my memory and mind. I noticed Rob coming back at various times: 2:33, 1:02, 1:35, 4:21, always in the AM, 1:56, 3:22, 3:06, 5:10, 2:09.  The men coughed, rotated, considered viewers “weak little faggots who need my cock,” 3:46, 12:47, some laid on their sides for several hours, shirtless but not totally sexual in their presentation, some kinda hesitation in their eyes as if testing the world to see if the world thought them attractive.  I felt shanked by what I interpreted as hints of stapled longing in their faces, all of my senses indicated that I was living in the Koyaanisqatsi of porn.  Keeping secrets in the era of social media is an aggressive method of remaining unshared. Yet the spills from certain years stay sticky and even sometimes find a way to tower over me.  Until they are presented to other people, the gore associated with those lost frenzies remains uncleared, yes, freedom fries mist in freezers past like Chrysippus' ass, who made him laugh to death, mhmm.
Since there had to be an afterimage to the disappearance of an old life, it had to be this: relaxed by the hands off finesse of fate, I lazily controlled myself to decide there wasn’t any other choice but fate.  Always available to the world was my face, to just hide it with a mask or veil would only bring more charged glances or wild guesses.  To be conceived of as sexy was blood-curdling.  I looked up the plastic surgeon with the lowest cumulative online rating, it was Gabe Jenkins and I called the office.  After hearing a high octave off-phone grunt, a voice said
“Dr Jenkins office?”
“Hi do you” I experienced a brisk intake, “Do you do all kinds of” here I laughed like I was trying to encourage someone I thought of as insecure after they made a difficult-to-react-to joke during a conversation “plastic surgery?”
“Yes we offer a number of options,” they responded without interest.
My lack of response gave the woman some go ahead to list the procedures, “breast enhancement, fillers, nose reconstruction, face lift, buttocks enhancement, some men like the calf implants, pec implants, jaw reshaping.  What are you looking for exactly?”
“I have some — a few ideas.  I” I looked at a long strand of black hair that hung from the stationary ceiling fan and was not mine “want to…look like — is it possible to make my face look older? I specifically would like forehead lines and crow’s feet.  And if there is a way to get my neck to sag lower than it is now that would be great. I am 27, I would like to look at least 78 if possible, hello?”
The voice had interest in it, “please don’t call here again if you are going to waste our time.”
“I am being very serious.  I would like plastic surgery to look older,” and there was silence.
I considered what I could say to make it real. “Please, I would like the procedures done as soon as possible, there is a big gala I will be attending in Singapore next month” but I fear-laughed and the woman exited.
I had no thoughts to live for, and then suddenly in a breakthrough moment I discovered that, after many many months, I had a thought: I should slowly begin to get plastic surgery to look older.  Now I needed money to make this happen.  Because then my disappearance would appear more accurate.  With the jowls of a 92 yr old man I would feel liberated.  But that wasn’t enough — I wanted more than anything to reproduce the appearance of a man well over 100.  In fact my thought revealed to me that I was a futurist because I would only settle for looking as old as someone whose life expectancy extended to at least 173.  I wanted to be old in a way no one had yet even imagined.  This would involve a lot of planning, sketching, file-saving and interviewing, and would likely be the type of initiative that lasts an entire life, and I would start with forehead lines.  An ease-in for the body and for the eyes of those that recognized me, and achievable with a budget eyebrow pencil for now.  Keeping costs down was a second thought that entered exactly behind the first thought that appeared after many months.  The eyebrow pencil could also be used for crow’s feet, frown lines, liver spots; but the application of frail sag on my neck, the indistinct recognition of the world suggested by the droop of eyes, the tint play of bald spots under white hair that is shiny and limp, the lowered vocal octave and general bodily slackening were all protruding costs. If I could not formulate, participate in or witness a revolution then I would elect to suffer a much more minor revolution that you might try to call a celebrolution.  As, though the actions and voices that built up the center of what we celebrate as a ‘political climate’ had shifted in an obvious external pivot towards a ‘something totally else,’ it still stood despite the panic that the country needed to focus on the opinions and physical movements of celebrities, and actually not ‘despite’ but ‘because of.’  And plastic surgery was often used by celebrities to command and maintain the public’s focus by recreating a version of themselves they believed responsible for their entry point into wealth and unhinged visibility. Since I was not known for anything and in fact could even be summarized as a loser or more accurately lost, and that I could barely string a sentence together and sometimes ate peanut butter sandwiches and then looked at my hands to discover I had actually eaten an entire pen — this meant my use of plastic surgery could be a revolution in my opportunities. That is, the opportunities that trickle down from achieving grotesque notoriety.  A celebrolution to solve a chunky lil personal puzzle.
I knew the lines in my palms very well, and so I looked forward to the inevitable submission of lines all over my face because I wanted to know those lines just as well.  I wanted to know them as well as I knew the tone of no worries found in the whoosh sound effect that separates two segments of an entertainment news TV show.  It became a sound I carried with me everywhere, I’ve looked at birds fly past me and heard the sound, communicating that something is leaving.  It gave me a short leak of light, in a moment, and then I could not wait to see what came next.  It was a sound I would need as a score for the before/after of my first forehead-aging and chest droop surgery.  I can definitely say that I’ve had a bird fly past me before.  I simply wanted more free time to formulate a plan for my future appearances, it filled my thoughts all day long. Monetarily I was forsaken, choked out and in need of unbound frondescence.  I never stopped thinking I had some level of luck, I had two lamps, but then there was the job which was just about all I could handle, and, full-time-as-part-time to its core, it tossed me about, took time away from my obsessions, and so I repressed and regularly said ‘yes’ to survive.  At work there was Rachel, who had been entranced by Tom Hiddleston and who first introduced the word ‘clopening’ to me, and Gifford, whose name I could not disassociate from Gabrielle Giffords, and Steven, whose quick rescuing reaction to an elderly customer’s near dive over an uninhibited bag of packing peanuts resulted in the customer’s maximum level of comfort and safety, considering the stakes.  That lack of hesitation in making a decision, and in making the right decision, the most helpful and societally selfless decision, caused me to immediately respect Steven.  So when he found the time to comment on something to me, I tried very hard to engage.  As he explained to me during a lunch break, “The USA does not exist. The White House does not exist. They are using holograms to deceive everyone. God destroyed Earth by fire. And these demon parasites knew it and fled and hid from God and God’s army. Well, they lost. God rules and is in control. Stop watching media. They are lying to everyone. The media all sold their soul to Illuminati demons and are no more. There is nothing more than demons and clones using holograms to run deception. Better wake up. The Heavenly Bodies are right above your head.”  And then he would laugh like he didn’t care if it was true.

Fatman: Why Mel Gibson Found Christmas Spirit at the End of a Gun
https://ift.tt/3evPPz5
Sometimes you find the Spirit of Christmas in the strangest of places. For brothers Eshom and Ian Nelms, it was at an awards season screening of Hacksaw Ridge in December 2016. The pair had already been dreaming of Fatman and its desperado Santa Claus for more than a decade when they attended the event. But they weren’t there that night for Santa; they came for a Q&A with Mel Gibson, the mercurial filmmaker who seemed to be on the cusp of reconciliation with Hollywood.
Arriving to his own screening renewed and happy, and with a bushy gray beard worthy of Methuselah, Gibson could still make a hell of an impression, both on an industry impressed by his World War II drama and the two young filmmakers with eyes due North.
“Gibson came out and he had this amazing beard,” Ian recalls over a Zoom interview, still with a twinkle in his eye. “He was a little slumped over and kneading his beard, very passionately talking to the audience about what he was excited about in the film and why he made it. But he also was right at the end of that award circuit, and you could see that he was a little worn out… you could see the wear and tear on him [and] a guy that was little beaten down at that point. We instantly looked at each other and we’re like, ‘That’s the guy.”
They were ready to shout that’s our Santa!
It’s an unusual origin story for a Christmas movie, but then Fatman isn’t your child’s new Netflix Christmas darling. Starring Gibson as an aged and broken man who is clinging on to the last vestiges of hope for a better tomorrow, Fatman seeks to ground Father Christmas with the same dispirited nihilism that James Mangold applied to Wolverine a few years ago in Logan. Both movies are ostensibly Westerns, informed by the deconstructionist streak of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, and both end in a bloodbath.
Yet whereas Unforgiven is the story of a cowboy, and Logan a clawed antihero, Fatman is about Santa existing  in a world where hitmen like Walton Goggins’ “Skinny Man” come out of the woodwork, eager to claim his scalp. However, if you sit down and ask the Nelms about this somber approach to the character, it makes perfect sense in the early 21st century.
“When we were doing some of the research and finding out how much money the holiday season really drives our economy, it’s amazing, right?” Eshom says. “You can see why that engine was created.”
Indeed, according to the World Economic Forum, Americans alone spend more than $1 trillion a year on holiday retail. And that doesn’t even  consider how much more is spent on holiday festivities, public events, and travel.
“I mean, Rudolph, which now seems to be a staple of Christmas, was actually an invention of [retailer] Montgomery Ward’s back in the day,” Ian says. “That’s a marketing ploy. Rudolph doesn’t exist!”
This cold economic reality informs the brothers’ approach to Santa. Other than his genuinely sweet partnership with Ruth (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), aka Mrs. Claus, Gibson’s Chris Kringle is despondent and cynical about the world today. It’s why he allowed his operation to become subsidized by the U.S. government, which in turn wants to prop up the American economy but is as oblivious about the Spirit of Christmas as the little boy (Chance Hurtsfield) who puts a bounty on Santa’s head after receiving a lump of coal on Dec. 25.
It’s an unorthodox take, and one the Nelms’ have been working on for the better part of 20 years. The pair tell us that the concept first came to them in 2003, fortuitously around the same time they bought their first DVDs: Unforgiven for Ian and Unbreakable for Eshom.
“This sort of superhero-Western mashup was, I think, a big catalyst for the film,” Eshom notes, particularly appreciating how grounded and stealthy the superheroics were in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. Their premise also fit into each brother’s preference for niche “alternative Christmas movies.” As a pair more inclined to enjoy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Gremlins during the holidays, not to mention the Gibson-starring Lethal Weapon, they saw an opportunity to make a unique genre-bender.
However, real movement on Fatman didn’t start until the Nelms began getting their foot in the industry in 2006, and they’ve been refining the idea ever since.
“We always wanted him to be an everyman,” Eshom says about the creative process. “We wanted [Chris and Ruth] to be really relatable and have a lot of what people would consider blue collar problems.”
As the sons of small business owners, the Nelms were able to understand that dynamic intimately, even if the stakes they saw growing up were never over the soul of Christmas.
Says Ian, “[Our parents] owned a photography business for 20 some odd years, and our mom was very much the Ruth. She was the backbone of that business, and he was very much the Chris, where he was the lead photographer. She was an amazing photographer in her own right, but he was the lead photographer and the business had his name on it, and he started it before he even met our mom. But he wouldn’t have lasted five seconds without our mom, because she really held that thing together. Even though he was a great photographer, the logistics eluded him, completely.”
That dynamic informs much of Fatman, which ended up being the Nelms’ fourth feature film. The movie is accurately marketed on the grizzled violence that eventually puts Goggins’ Skinny Man on the opposite end of a snow bank from Gibson’s Kringle. The slender one bellows, “I’ve come for your head, Fatman!” But the film surprisingly plays its absurdities straight, not least of all because of Gibson and Jean-Baptiste’s affection.
It’s one element the brothers emphasized to Gibson when they finally got in a room with the filmmaker to pitch the project; another was how stripped down and crusty their vision of Santa would be.
“The pictures that we were showing him were these pictures of these old trappers, and these guys who were visiting Antarctica in the early 1900s and they were on dog sleds,” Ian says. “We were… really bringing it back to a place of when this guy got started. Maybe the jacket is real leather and that’s real animal fur? It’s like it goes back to a time when he was originated, and we felt like that jacket had been upgraded for hundreds of years with Ruth stitching it up.”

It clearly wasn’t Tim Allen’s Santa Claus, but that was the point. They expressly pitched that point to the star they’d grown up watching in Mad Max and Lethal Weapon movies, and Gibson in turn ran with the “cowboy” angle, modeling Chris on several people he knew in his own life.
Even with this background, audiences will likely be surprised by how stripped down Fatman is when they watch it for themselves. Because while there may be elves with bells on their shoes, for example, these helpers work in a low lit, industrial hell and on a stretch of Alaskan farmland far removed from a magical workshop.
Says Eshom, “We were like, ‘Okay, Santa’s in the North Pole?’ Well, there isn’t shit at the North Pole. So if he really wanted an infrastructure and to [actually] get supplies and power, and all this stuff, we’re like, ‘Okay he’s got to be somewhere where there’s a slight civilization. So Alaska.”
It’s part and parcel for an approach that pivots on grounding the Santa Claus mythology in as much reality as possible. This Santa still rides around the world on magical reindeer, but we don’t actually see that Christmas Eve adventure. Instead we bear witness to the aftermath, where Chris comes home exhausted and bleeding, with a hole in his coat from where some kid shot him with a BB-gun.
It’s obviously unlike any Santa you’ve ever seen before. And while the film has already been welcomed by a niche audience in limited theatrical release, it’s also received plenty of criticism for its violent portrayal of Father Christmas. But the Nelms are unbothered by that criticism.
“This isn’t for kids, you know?” Eshom says. “If you want Miracle on 34th Street mixed with Die Hard, this might be your flavor.”  Additionally, each director is stunned at how much more timely a beleaguered Santa feels in 2020, since they’ve been trying to get this movie off the ground for 14 years.
“We finished shooting right at the beginning of the pandemic,” Ian says. “We finished shooting and then the next day they shut down all productions in Canada. We were really fortunate to finish on time and then we spent the next six months editing it in my basement. So we had a wonderful distraction, which was nice, but it was a weird time to do it because the tension [is] ratcheting across the world, especially in our country being hit so hard by the pandemic.”
Ironically, they made a film about a once benevolent figure looking at the rising despair and naughtiness of modern American society, and recoiling. That tension, which is as tight a string can get without breaking according to Ian, has only gotten further strained since the film’s edit locked.
Nevertheless, the filmmakers don’t view Santa Claus or the Spirit he represents as a cynical one, even in Fatman. Rather they describe Gibson’s Chris Kringle as something of a guiding light: a man who gives toys to urge children toward whatever skills or proclivities they might have to better realize their futures. So Chris’ wearied resolution to continue the job is as optimistic as it is archetypal.
“I think he’s disgusted in himself, really,” says Ian. “He has that line at the end of the film where he just says, ‘You know, it’s partly my fault that we’ve gotten to this point.’ He’s talking about the state of the world, and he feels like he hasn’t quite been doing his job the last few hundred years. He’s let everything kind of slip and slide, as people do… But he’s trying to figure out how to get it back, and that’s really what the bottom line is, right? Like a call to action, he’s got to get back to the old ways.”
Maybe we all can this Christmas.
Fatman is available on VOD and in limited theatrical release now.

13th Doctor rambles
Okay so it’s been about a day and I was at work most of yesterday so let’s collect my thoughts.
I fully expected there to be a female Doctor because the show has completely been moving in that direction and normalizing that idea, from some discussions to major points like Missy and the President of Gallifrey regenerating into a black woman in the Series 9 finale. Which is why all the renewed Moffat hate is frustrating because he actually made it so that someone other than a female Doctor would be surprising, but like, whatever. It’s not like you’ve been watching.
I didn’t realize at first that she was Beth from Broadchurch, a show I also love and she’s really good in. Also, Netflix, please upload the newest season ASAP (I don’tget BBCA anymore). Chibnall and Whittaker doing DW now isn’t why Broadchurch ended, though–it was always planned as 3 seasons.
I was surprised at how many people, many of whom don’t even watch the show anymore or never did, came out of the woodwork to celebrate this. It also meant a lot of it was devoid of the context that THIS WAS COMING and it’s not out of nowhere. Also, I’m just not super excited? Probably because I expected it and I also never *wanted* to be the Doctor (though I certainly related to him at many points…often the sadder ones) so it’s not like “yay this represents me!” or something.
I’m also not surprised by hateful comments because this happens every other week with something and I’ve been around long enough to know how certain DW fans feel. Also, I already witnessed quite a bit of hatred regarding the new Star Trek, which I’ve been pumped for since it was announced, and in that case it was worse because there are 2 WOC. Which is another annoyance I have…people were bringing up all these examples of major sci-fi women heading franchieses recently and Star Trek was hardly mentioned, and it’s a BIG one, and one of the few women who isn’t white.
People have valid criticisms, but I think I’m just completely numb because at this point, TV is the one thing I do that I refrain from being overly critical about and doesn’t feel like “work” (unlike reading, writing, online stuff). I’m also one of those women (and bisexual to boot) that actually likes Moffat’s characters and themes and stories so I’ve basically just become immune to all the noise. I also just don’t expected Doctor Who and the BBC to be THAT progressive, honestly–over here in the US it may seem like part of prestige TV, but it really isn’t and has much fewer creative freedoms. Also? Yes, 54 years and 12 Doctors, but a good 15 of those were off-air, Time Lords weren’t even established for 6 years and regeneration 3, and in the main series I don’t think the capacity for them to regenerate into a different gender was mentioned until “The Doctor’s Wife” in 2011 so…it isn’t a stretch of the imagination by far (and I think the lack of racial diversity is MORE glaring) but it’s really hard to imagine it happening years ago. Also a lot of it has BBC approval because it’s their major brand. Doctor Who, frankly, operates on an older-school level than cutting edge TV right now and I just don’t expect the same level enough to be disappointed.
Hence the numbness. I’ve just been really numb about Doctor Who and restricting my bubble because too much of the discourse stresses me out and it’s not where I want to spend my energy.
I also think having one male companion is just way too easy. It could be interesting but I really want multiple companions. Then again, a male companion would be certainly different. I dunno, I just feel like it would lead to inevitable romantic suggestions which I'm never much of a fan of.
My brother said the Doctor “regenderated”“ which is now my new favorite thing.

15 Tips for Living in a Small Space
Tumblr media
Laura Fenton lives during a 690-square-foot Jackson Heights apartment together with her husband, Weston, and four-year-old son, William. “We’ve lived here since i used to be pregnant,” she says, “It has been five years this spring!” She is additionally the author of the small Book of Living Small (Amazon/Indiebound). Here are her brilliant tips for living comfortably during a small space…
1. you would like to tidy a day . I wish it weren’t true, but a house doesn't keep itself. the key to a cheerful house is for everything to possess an area and to try to to the work to place those things back in their homes.
2. simply because you reside during a tiny space doesn’t mean you've got to possess small-scale art. I spent years scouring eBay for this huge, vintage Rand McNally chart . Now it’s the focus of our front room .
3. Don’t rent offsite space for storing . I’m really hooked in to this! If you have already got a self-storage unit, I’d recommend tackling this before you begin in on your home. consider it as a debt that must be paid off. And if you’re thinking of renting storage to form your small space work, know that the prices are likely to quickly add up to quite the worth of the items you propose to store.
4. Rooms can multitask. Weston’s ‘office’ is tucked into a corner of our front room . The corner desk unit may be a hand-me-down from my sister’s bedroom growing up that fit perfectly into the space. Because it hugs the wall, the desk takes up little or no floor space while offering storage and area of a way larger desk: I don’t know why more people don’t have these!
5. Have people over. Once quarantine is over, this is often one among the items i'm most looking forward to. When friends and family inherit your home, you get good energy. What you serve can make an enormous difference, so choose things which will all get on one plate, so you'll squeeze everything onto the table. We also host people more casually, versus a sit-down meal. We’ll place the food on the board with a help-yourself quite set-up. That way, we will invite more people. For dinner parties, you'll borrow what you would like — a folding table, extra chairs, etc. — rather than having to shop for stuff and worry about storage.
6. But throw the large parties somewhere else! This tip came from Alison Mazurek, who refers to the present as ‘outsourcing’ space. Yes, hosting during a venue or a restaurant will cost quite having a celebration reception , but a few of hundred dollars a couple times a year is nothing to the larger rent or mortgage payment you’d be making on a home large enough to host big celebrations. 7. Don’t be afraid to renovate. We renovated our kitchen on a teeny budget, with cabinets from IKEA. The redesigned kitchen layout has standard 24-inch deep cabinets on the stove side but only 15-inch deep ones on the other side. We also added an under-sink dishwasher (the genius Spacemaker by GE) after seeing one during a house we rented.
8. Daylight always makes an area feel bigger. So, consider skipping blinds or curtains. For rentals, I’m an enormous fan of self-adhesive privacy film: you'll obscure the view into your home without losing any daylight. Basic options sort of a frosted glass lookalike are available at hardware stores and Stick Pretty sells sophisticated patterns.
9. Get a hard-working bed. Our bed from Gothic Cabinet Craft has six built-in storage drawers where we store all our folded clothes, but a Murphy bed or a loft bed also can be an excellent thanks to use your space. Speaking of Murphy beds or other pricey furniture — these could seem too big an investment for a rental, but consider the prices over time. If you'll save $400 a month by renting a studio rather than a one-bedroom, and a Murphy bed will make the studio livable for 2 people, consider an investment of $1,200 because the equivalent of three months of the cheaper rent.
10. Put all lights on a dimmer. Lighting is critical for a comfortable feeling in any space, and particularly within the bedroom. For bedside lighting, you'll save space on your nightstand with a wall-mounted sconce. We bought plug-in models — no electrician required.
11. Sometimes it pays to travel custom — and with vendors on Etsy, it’s actually affordable! We had the floating nightstands made for our 8’ x 10’ bedroom by Tim O’Brien Woodworks after we couldn’t find off-the-shelf ones that might fit the space.
12. Get out of your tiny house. The library, the park or grandma’s house are all places we escape once we need a touch breathing space . When my husband and that i were within the early, sleep-deprived days of parenting, we’d alternate taking our noisy toddler bent a diner within the morning, therefore the other parent could sleep in our small apartment. I also wrote much of my book within the library and occasional shops.
13. Give differently. you'll stop the culture of living large by giving experiences rather than things. Museum memberships are great for families, and therefore the gift of babysitting may be a big one. one among the simplest gifts that my parents ever gave me may be a theatre ticket subscription, where you had tickets to an entire season of plays. Or, if you favor to put something in someone’s hand, consider something consumable, like food, flowers or fancy soaps.
14. Choose a transparent curtain . Our bathroom is small , and once we hang a curtain it feels downright claustrophobic. Someday we'd invest during a glass shower door, but our solution for now's to use a transparent curtain , which leaves the space feeling more open and airier.
15. Remember the long view. Life’s stages come and go (the space-hogging bouncy seat and therefore the stroller are going to be gone before you recognize it, I swear!). If your space has begun to feel too small, take a step back and examine what’s happening now. Don’t let today’s temporary discomfort force you into getting into an area that’s bigger than you actually need.

Man United, Mourinho must fix style, Chelsea's post-Conte future

Man United, Mourinho must fix style, Chelsea's post-Conte future
Winning the FA Cup on Saturday will have absolutely no bearing on whether or not Antonio Conte sticks around as Chelsea manager. In that sense, the “oldest cup competition in the world” is even less relevant than usual, which doesn’t mean it was a fruitless exercise. We learned something, too, getting further confirmation that he can match tactical wits in a war of attrition against almost anyone and come out on top, especially if his team gets the early goal, which they did.
Jose Mourinho twisted himself into a pretzel of backhanded compliments after the match. First he complimented Chelsea, because it’s about winning and then saying that “only one team tried to play football” (his team, obviously) and that he’d love to know what the media would have said if United had played (or not played, in this case) the way Conte had his team play.
I can’t speak for the “media” as a whole, but if that had been Marcus Rashford winning and converting a penalty early on, and then United parking the bus while looking to play on the counterattack, I’d have said: “Well done. You played to your strengths and your plan worked.”
Good football doesn’t necessarily mean attacking football or entertaining football. It is football that works and does what it is supposed to do: create as many good chances as possible while conceding as few good chances as possible. The reason I, like many others, was so effusive in praise for Manchester City is that they created a ton while conceding little and achieved tremendous results along the way.
Manchester United have finished second under Jose Mourinho this season, and that’s progress, but they’ve also turned in some unbelievably turgid performances at times (Sevilla being Exhibit A), which is why Mourinho has been criticised at times.
It’s simple, really.
Mourinho did what Mourinho does following a high-profile defeat, lashing out at others and offering back-handed compliments to Chelsea. Chris Brunskill Ltd/Getty Images
Chelsea went into lock-down mode a little early, and against a different team, one that is comfortable in possession in the final third and doesn’t do the bulk of its scoring on transitions and counters, might have paid a higher price for it. As it happened, with Romelu Lukaku on the bench — by the way, the whole “he says he isn’t fit” thing from Mourinho was befuddling: how about sticking up for your star striker who scored 27 goals this season? — and with Alexis Sanchez having an off day, it was always going to be hard to break down Chelsea. United did create chances and on a different day might have equalized. They did not. That’s football.
Mourinho can’t blame Conte for opting to play on the counter, not when he contributed to United’s own first-half woes by deputizing Ander Herrera to man-mark Eden Hazard. It may have worked in the past, but against a three-man midfield, it simply meant Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba were a man down in the middle of the park.
As ever, there’s a middle ground when it comes to United. There has been evident progress since Mourinho’s arrival and it goes beyond the silverware he has won. Equally, he’s not where he’d like to be — or where many of us expected him to be — after two years. Not so much in terms of results, but in terms of building a side that plays the way he wants them to play.
He will need to remedy that this summer.
What’s next for Conte and Chelsea?
play
2:10
Despite winning the FA Cup this season, the FC crew agree Antonio Conte has likely coached his final match for Chelsea.
Conte’s future looks like a game of chicken, with neither side wanting to blink first. If Chelsea sack him, they need to pay up the final year of his contract: that will cost them north of $10 million. For a club that received no Champions League revenue a year ago and won’t be getting any next year, it matters because those are funds that would otherwise go to strengthening the team.
Equally, if he resigns, he leaves that money on the table. If Conte found another club at which to land, one that would pay him a comparable amount, then it would be less of an issue. But that hasn’t happened yet, and equally, his people need to be careful about pitching for other jobs since he’s still under contract.
Compounding matters is the fact that this is a fraught time on the Chelsea end. Roman Abramovich’s visa has expired and as of right now, it has not yet been renewed by British authorities. There is no indication whether it’s a technicality, he’s a victim of Anglo-Russian relations or if it will all get sorted soon, but clearly not being physically present complicates matters.
Another person who isn’t physically present is Chelsea’s director of football, because the club haven’t had one since Michael Emenalo’s departure just before Christmas. None of these hurdles are insurmountable, although they do make everything that little bit more difficult.
Could inertia set in and Conte stick around?
It’s unlikely, but perhaps that scenario is not as far-fetched as it may initially sound. Conte’s relationship with some members of the squad isn’t great (witness Willian’s Instagram feed) but the ones with which he’s fallen out aren’t the guys who are likely to play a big part in Chelsea’s future. If anything, they’re pawns who could be sold to finance a summer transfer campaign.
Conte has the support of the bulk of the fans, and not even his harshest critic would suggest that if he sticks around, he’ll simply mail it in: it’s just not in his nature to do so.
Unless Chelsea have a master plan they’ve kept totally under wraps rather than rushing into an appointment and chucking money at the transfer market, without the filter of a director of football, perhaps it makes sense to wait a year and do it right.
Lazio vs. Inter delivers the drama
play
0:47
Gab Marcotti explains how Inter’s big decision in the summer proved decisive to securing Champions League football for the first time since 2012.
Inter captured fourth place — and a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2012 — in the most dramatic way, twice coming from behind to win 3-2 away to Lazio. They were outplayed by an injury-weakened opponent for much of the game, and at 2-1 down with 12 minutes to go, it looked all over. Then Stefan De Vrij (who, of course, is joining Inter on a free transfer in the summer) gave away a penalty, which Mauro Icardi converted before Matias Vecino flicked home the winning header.
In other circumstances, the De Vrij situation would have looked sinister, but it’s as much a reflection of the modern game as anything else. Deals are done well in advance and the only question is whether to make them public. Had this not been announced, it would still have leaked. And even if it didn’t, when he showed up at Inter in the summer folks would cycle back to the penalty he gave away.
In my opinion, it’s a non-story. If De Vrij had wanted to favour his new club, there were plenty of other occasions to do it. On this one, he simply mistimed a tackle he had to make. He was an utmost professional until the end, much like Nico Kovac, who robbed his future club Bayern of the German Cup just 24 hours earlier.
Needless to say, this is huge for Inter. They gambled in the summer by hanging on to their sellable assets (Ivan Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic, Icardi) and appointing Luciano Spalletti. The football wasn’t always great, and Spalletti (at least for now) didn’t prove to be the savant some had hoped he would be, but in the end, they got over the line. Now, the challenge is building on it and being ready for Europe.
As for Lazio, you feel for them. This has been an incredible season and you’re left to wonder what might have been if not for those late season injuries to Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto. De Vrij likely won’t be the only one to depart — Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has plenty of suitors — but it’s critical that whatever money comes in be reinvested wisely.
Who knows, they may yet have another mini-miracle in them next year…
Kovac upsets his new club in German Cup final
Niko Kovac might not be great for Bayern in the long run but he showed he can win the big game when asked. Alexander Hassenstein/Bongarts/Getty Images
I have no idea if Niko Kovac is ready to manage Bayern for the simple reason that I’m not sure anybody is ready to take over the Bavarians right now. After all, this is a club still marked by the Pep Guardiola Era two seasons after his departure, where there are no fewer than 16 or 17 starter-calibre players who expect to play, where expectations are sky-high and where there are two, sometimes conflicting, bosses at the very top.
Two years spent at Bayern fifteen years ago, when it was a very different club, aren’t really going to move the needle in that regard. But what’s evident is that he’ll be a little more prepared than he was last week after Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-1 win in the German Cup final. Silverware commands respect, and delivering Eintracht’s first trophy in 30 years matters. (It matters possibly more than it should: taking Eintracht from 16th to 11th to eighth in the Bundesliga ought to be a better indicator of his work.)
Kovac needed the rub of the green against his future club, but then so does everybody when they play Bayern. His opponents hit the woodwork several times and had a strong penalty appeal turned down (even after VAR). But the fact that Eintracht were right there to take advantage of the breaks, and that he was in no way fazed by the occasion, speaks volumes.
As for Bayern, between this and the semifinal with Real Madrid, their season ends with a whimper. It’s not as if they didn’t do enough to succeed in both clashes; it’s just that the bar has been set so high that anything other than tangible trophies feels a little empty.
Even when you win the league by 21 points.
Iniesta’s place in Spain’s “best-ever” discussion
play
2:11
After Andres Iniesta’s last game for Barca, the FC crew assess his place among Spain’s greats and whether he can go out on top at the World Cup.
Philippe Coutinho scored a peach of a goal as Barcelona downed Real Sociedad, but it was all about Andres Iniesta on Sunday as he played his final for the club he joined as a kid 21 years ago. Nine La Liga titles, six Copas del Rey, four Champions Leagues, two European Championships and a World Cup — scoring the winner in the final, no less — speak for themselves.
My own Iniesta memory is that of a late scout who raved about him ever since he saw him at a very young age. He’d regularly moan that Iniesta deserved more playing time as a youngster and would lambast Frank Rijkaard for not using him more. It seems weird today, given that future superstars are anointed early, but Iniesta did not become a regular starter until he was 22. With hindsight, you wonder if perhaps being brought along slowly didn’t contribute to his success.
Some were hailing him as the greatest Spanish player of all time on Sunday. I thought of the other candidates, from Ricardo Zamora, Telmo Zarra and Francisco Gento decades ago, to Michel, Xavi, Emilo Butragueno, Raul and Ikea Casillas in more recent years, to maybe Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos, who have more history left to make. (I’m purposely leaving Alfredo Di Stefano out of the conversation — that’s a can of worms.)
I’m going to sit on the fence here, but there is no question he belongs in the Spanish G.O.A.T. conversation.
What’s next for Buffon?
play
1:54
The FC crew interpret what Willian’s now-deleted Instagram post says about Chelsea players’ relationship with Antonio Conte and Conte’s future.
The day before Iniesta, Gigi Buffon also made his farewells. After 16 years at Juventus with nine league titles, four Italian Cups and, of course, the 2006 World Cup, the unimportant 2-1 win over Verona was his final game. In his case, there’s a little more mystery over his future, which he says will become clearer this week.
Until recently, Buffon was determined to retire at the end of the campaign. In fact, Juventus president Andrea Agnelli had made an offer whereby he’d be fast-tracked into some sort of front-office role at the club after a period of apprenticeship. He may yet go down that road, but he also revealed there were other opportunities.
What appears certain is that if he does continue playing, it won’t be in Italy and it won’t be (his words) at a lesser club. Media speculation has linked him with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool (though there are strong counterarguments to each), with perhaps the most fascinating tale sending him to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors.
All will be revealed really soon. Personally, I dig the romantic idea of him playing his final years at Diego Maradona’s old club and experiencing a Superclasico against River Plate.
Tuchel says all the right things
Thomas Tuchel faced the press for the first time as manager of Paris Saint-Germain, just 24 hours after Unai Emery’s final game in charge. He was asked the predictable questions.
Neymar? “He’s an artist … exceptional … any artist gets treated accordingly!”
Transfers, and implicitly the threat of a financial fair play-motivated freeze? “If the transfer window closed today, I would be very happy: I am confident in those who built this squad.”
Philosophy? “When Pep [Guardiola] worked in Barcelona, he introduced a particular mindset and that is what I want to create here.”
Buffon? “I do not want to start speculation … he is an incredible personality and has had an exceptional career.”
All in all, Tuchel said what you’d expect. But how all of this plays out in the real world, remains to be seen. I’m a Tuchelista, through and through. This club, at this time, does not seem a natural fit. I hope he proves me wrong.
How will Real line up vs. Liverpool?
Real Madrid’s trip to Villarreal was meant to be a general tuneup ahead of the Champions League final with the added novelty of Luca Zidane, the manager’s other son (Enzo made his debut last year in the Copa del Rey), getting his first taste of the big time.
Assuming Keylor Navas returns between the sticks, which is a given, Saturday’s lineup offers a hint of what could come in Kiev. It would mean no surprises in the back four, with Casemiro joining Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in midfield and Isco behind Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. It could all change, of course — heck, nobody has more options in the final third than Zidane — but it’s a testament to Bale’s sparkling form in the final stages of the season.
Guerrero’s ban is a travesty
The fact that Paolo Guerrero, Peru’s captain and top goal scorer, will miss the World Cup is frankly a travesty, and it’s good that FIFPro and others have gotten involved.
In a nutshell, for those who don’t recall, Guerrero tested positive for benzoylecgonine (a metabolite of cocaine) last October. He argued that it came from drinking contaminated tea, and after initially banning him for 12 months, FIFA reduced the ban to six. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed FIFA’s decision and the case went to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), who extended the ban to 14 months.
Now CAS agreed with FIFA that Guerrero wasn’t trying to enhance his performance, but they say he bears “some fault or negligence even if it was not significant” basically because he should have been more careful. And because current FIFA rules say that in such cases the ban should be between one and two years, they opted for 14 months.
WADA, no doubt, are happy. After all, when you’re a hammer, you treat everything like a nail. But there’s common sense here, too.
Treating cocaine the same way you treat steroids or EPO is just silly. It may be illegal and bad for you, but it is not a performance-enhancing drug and there is no case of anyone using it for that purpose. This article goes into the issue in detail if you’re interested in the subject.
In the meantime, you have a guy who has already served a six-and-a-half month ban who will miss out on his first, last and only World Cup not because he was trying to cheat, as CAS and FIFA found, but because he was careless (albeit in a “not significant” way, as CAS says) about drinking a cup of tea.
Dost, Sporting end season in a bad way
You may have noticed that for the past two years I’ve run something called #BasDostWatch. It started as a bit of an inside joke and turned into a bit of a tradition, helped along by the fact that Dost himself could not stop scoring. It was a way to celebrate a player who, as much as anyone, got the very best out of a limited and unconventional skill set, making the most of his brains, work-rate and heft.
But like his Sporting teammates, Dost had a wretched end of the season after a group of masked men, possibly club Ultras, burst into the training ground and beat him up, along with a number of teammates. It’s a sinister tale involving a divided fan base and a controversial club president and you can read more about it here.
I wish #BasDostWatch could end on a happier note. (Sporting lost the Cup final to Desportivo das Aves to add insult to injury.). Most of all, I wish this is the last we hear of this criminal nonsense, unless it’s to hear that the armed thugs who did this are brought to justice.
Monday Musings, in its current version, is going on holiday for the summer. Catch you all in August.

How Celebration Fuels Achievement
3 Powerful Byproducts of Celebrating Your Wins
“Positivity” tops my Strengths Finder test. So I like to celebrate—often. But does celebration fuel progress? Will it produce greater results? From my experience, yes. It does so by bringing three powerful byproducts to you and your organization, all of which are vital for growth.
1. Celebration brings energy
Purposeful celebration brings an energy to your team, and that energy will directly impact the performance they deliver. It feels good to be acknowledged. And it doesn’t take much. Sometimes it’s just a pat on the back or thumbs up from the right person at the right time.
Heck, just look at our “social” behavior online. How many times have you posted a picture, video or message on any of the social platforms like Facebook, Instagram or YouTube… only to be eagerly waiting to see if anyone “likes” it?
Be honest. We’ve all done it right?
Why? Because it feels good to be recognized. It feels good to acknowledged. It feels good to know that people are paying attention to what we’re doing. And we’re much more likely to do more of the things that feel good.
“ It feels good to be recognized. And we’re MUCH more likely to do more of the things that feel good.
—STU MCLAREN
For example, years ago while at university, I played on the soccer team. During my first year, we had a really good team. But we just didn’t “gel.” Furthermore, the coaches took a very “critical” approach to the way they coached the team. Their style was to find a mistake, share it with the team, and coach around how to avoid repeating the mistake in the next game.
So after every game, no matter what happened (even if we won), we would hear about all the things that we could have done better. It sucked. By the end of their deconstruction of the game, we were completely deflated. It wasn’t fun, and by the end of the season the guys were drained. Worst of all, it showed on the field.
Fast forward two years and the coaches started using a different approach. They started playing to our strengths. They started focusing on the things we were doing right and they began reinforcing them. And the locker room after the game was a totally different place. There were a lot more high fives and laughter, and our team chemistry was at an all-time high.
I’ll tell you, as a player, it was far easier to repeat what was working than it was to avoid making mistakes (I’ll share why in a second, but there’s another point I want to share on this first).
When we won, we started doing something unique. We had a song that we’d sing after every game. It was our celebration song. As soon as the game was over, the team would go to the center of the field and one of the guys would get picked by the other players to start the countdown to the song. Then we would all break down and start singing together.
It became a moment that all the guys looked forward to. Eventually, the fans started joining in as well (at home games). It brought a whole different energy to the way the team showed up—both for practice and for the games. And despite our team “on paper” not being as skilled, we went on to win the National Championship two years in a row.
I’m not saying the celebration was the only reason, but it sure made a difference. Celebration naturally creates a positive energy, and that positive energy transforms the way your team will show up.
“ Celebration naturally creates a positive energy, and that positive energy transforms the way your team will show up.
—STU MCLAREN
2. Celebration brings clarity
Leading a team isn’t easy. When you’re in a leadership position, you shoulder a lot that people never see—risk, responsibility, just keeping the lights on. With all the weight and worry of leadership on our minds, it can be easy to view celebration as a “nice to have” vs. a “need to have.”
But there’s a big side benefit of celebration that few of us think about: Celebration brings clarity to what you want to see.
Back to my soccer example. When the coaches were constantly critical, our heads were full of what not to do. But then we also had to think about what we needed to do to play better. So we had to think about things twice. First “avoid this.” Second, “do that.” And if there were multiple mistakes, you can imagine how mentally draining this would be.
When you celebrate positive results, you immediately simplify things. It becomes “do more of this.” Period. Simple, right?
The challenge as leaders is to take the complexities of running a successful business and distill it down to its most simple form. Celebration does that because it reinforces the good. It signals to the team “this is important—do more of it.”
That clarity makes winning easy. But here’s what this means for you: You need to decide what you want to celebrate. What are the few things necessary for you to win? In business speak, what are your key performance indicators, your KPIs?
If you know what they are, great! But does your team? And are you reinforcing your KPIs by celebrating the people hitting or exceeding them? Are you celebrating in public so it gets reinforced for everyone? If not, that’s your homework. First identify your KPI’s. Then, communicate them with your team. Finally, reinforce their importance by publicly celebrating the people who are hitting them.
3. Celebration brings momentum
The first year we won the National Championship, we actually lost our first game. And it wasn’t a narrow loss. We got blown out 6-1. It was a terrible way to start the season.
Looking back, I think that’s when the coaches made the shift in their style. Somehow they knew if they went into the locker room and focused on all our mistakes, we’d be crushed. And that would be the end of the entire season.
So while we players expected a lashing, our coaches were very calm. Instead, they shifted everyone’s focus to the next game. And that might not seem like much, but it was a critical leadership moment. We knew we screwed up. We didn’t need to dwell on what went wrong. We just needed the clarity to know how to move forward.
Although we started the season with a loss, our next game we squeaked out a 1-0 win. Then the season started to take on a life of its own. We just kept staying focused on our next game. Before we knew it, one win led to another, and we had strung together eight in a row.
And remember the “singing celebration.” Soon, we had fans coming to the game because it was such a “fun” atmosphere. Everyone loves a winning team. Plus, we were all over the school press. Professors started asking about our games in class. It felt like we were mini-celebrities on campus. All of which reinforced the things we were doing right.
Soon, we had so much momentum on our side that we felt like we could actually go all the way. And we did! We finished the season 13-2-1 and won the first men’s soccer National Championship in our school’s history.
Unlike sports, there’s no win/loss column in business. That’s why as leaders, we need to celebrate what we want to see more of because celebration is a reminder of the things your team is doing well. Don’t assume they know. Make it clear for them. The more they experience “winning,” the more confidence and belief they’ll have.
Momentum is tremendously powerful. People are attracted to things that are on the rise. So in the beginning, identify your “wins” (even the little ones) and start celebrating them. Because celebration creates momentum. And momentum can carry your team further than any of you could imagine.
We experienced this last year when we launched our company. It all started with the launch of our signature program called TRIBE. That launch was our “National Championship.” It was a huge success and far surpassed our goals. It created so much momentum that in ten months we went from zero to $6 million in sales.
Furthermore, it helped us attract a tremendously talented team. That now gives us the ability to serve our audience on a whole new level. And just like with the soccer team, we now have people coming out of the woodwork to work with us—because everyone likes working with a winning team.
And we carry this same celebration philosophy through to our clients and customers with something we call “The Circle of Awesomeness”.
We know that our company’s future depends on our ability to help our customers get the results they’re looking for. If we do that, we have a great story to tell. And by sharing customer success stories, we know we’ll attract even more clients. So we celebrate with our customers often. And each time we do it reinforces what’s necessary for our clients to get the results they want. So more people do it—and that leads to more results. It’s self-perpetuating.
It’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of running or leading an organization. And when you’re moving fast, taking time to celebrate isn’t a top priority. But when you do, you’ll begin to experience all kinds of benefits—especially greater positive energy, clarity, and momentum, which will take you to even higher levels of achievement.
