My Favorite Downloadable Sim Creators!
If you are anything like me, you end up putting a lot of effort into your main character sim, but don't really have the energy to create the rest of the town. The townies the game creates just don't fit the world you created in your head, so you end up disappointed. Well, a great solution is downloading other people's amazing sims and using MCCC to populate them in your town! No more random ugly townies, now you have pretty people with their own stories! Here is my list of favorite sim creators (in no particular order) and a brief description about what they make:
@wildfairies (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid. Makes a nice blend of regular and occult sims. They all look unique and pretty without being too overly detailed or distracting while playing! Most available sims have one outfit each.
@sunnyssimming (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Mix, CC-mid. Makes gorgeous female sims (and one guy). She makes mostly Maxis-Match, but some hair or makeup might dip into the alpha category. Available sims have one outfit each.
@m0ckest (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match, CC-Free (she has a page with default replacements she uses if you want the sims to look one-to-one). She releases townie makeovers, brand-new sims, and lots. I'm honestly pretty impressed with how good her sims look without using CC!
@pearlean (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match/Custom Art Style, CC-Mid/Heavy. She has her own art style which I would say is closest to something like Telltale's Walking Dead game, which is aided by her beautiful GShade preset. Some base sims and some with one outfit.
@nikatyler (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match, CC-Lite. If you want a full catalog of available sims, you'll want to check her out (seriously, 29 pages of Sims 4 downloads alone, and she has stuff for Sims 3 as well). She has townie makeovers, brand-new sims, lots, and a good mix of regular and occult sims! Most downloads have all outfits included.
@seyvia (Tag) - Maxis-Mix, CC-Mid/Heavy. She has a more cartoony art style with large eyes and expressive faces, which is right up my alley! She has also remade the Stardew Valley bachelors/bachelorettes and even has some CC-Free downloads. Downloads have all outfits included.
@puppycheesecake (Tag) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid. They have some really creative ideas for sims, with a lot of horror/occult/fantasy-inspired ones (although there are plenty of regular sims, too!) Some downloads have all outfits, some have one, but it is labelled which is which on each sim.
@youngcozyboy (Tag) - Maxis-Mix/Alpha, CC-Heavy. Anime/cartoon-influenced, with some more NSFW downloads/pictures sprinkled in there. They have a large catalog of downloads/townie makeovers and plenty of fantasy-inspired sims (which is something I always love to see). They are Korean, so you'll have to rename the sims once you've downloaded them if you don't speak it, but that isn't a big deal. Also, their screenshots are so expressive and pretty, it really captures each sim's personality! Most sims have one outfit included.
@ladychaos (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match, CC-Lite/Free. She has her own save file that you can download and use, but she also posts everything to the gallery and her Patreon! Her lots and households all have a cozy look/feel to them and have their own stories to tell. I particular love her Strangerville ones! All downloads have all outfits included.
@bansheeso (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match/Mix, CC-Mid. If you are looking for some pretty occult boys (and one girl), then she is the person to go to. I love populating my town with some occult/fantasy sims, so her creations are great for my world! Their household names are in Ukrainian, but that's not a problem since they can easily be renamed. Each download has one outfit.
@fallstaticexit (Tag) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid. Some nice looking townie makeovers along with some retired sims from their stories. Really solid additions to any world! If you do check her out, be sure to look at her Children of the Forest story, I'm very invested in it! Some come with all their outfits and some come with one.
@acuar-io (Tag/Patreon) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid. He makes some great, unique-looking sims and makeovers. No same-face syndrome here, each sim has their own distinct face structure with some wrinkles, moles, and other details that I feel like get overlooked too often to make the most beautiful sim. Unique sims have one outfit and makeovers have all outfits.
@kharssims (Tag) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid/High. He focuses on male sims and they look great! The perfect amount of facial details like wrinkles, freckles, and moles to keep them looking unique and like an actual person you could come across. Each download has one outfit.
@thebramblewood (Tag) - Maxis-Match, CC-Lite/Mid. While they may not have a huge catalog, I think that they have a great selection of maxis-match sims, both makeovers and originals, to choose from. My personal favorite of theirs is Bridget Bledsoe from their Occult Sim Dump! Each sim has one outfit.
Some Honorable Mentions!
@occultradio (Tag) - Maxis-Match, CC-Mid. They don't make sim downloads often, but I love the ones they have available so much. Their Mothman is one of my favorite sims in my entire gallery!
@mothelette - They don't have their sims up for download, but I gotta point out the witchcraft they perform to make their beautifully-stylized sims. Their creations are amazing.
@nefarrilou - They don't have their sims up for download, but they do create beautiful lookbooks. Occults, townie makeovers, and recreations of popular characters in media, they'll have something you'll enjoy!

Hello time to yap about life and media again! 🥰
It's been a month and a half since we fully moved into this new old house and it's been a steep learning curve!! so far we had to learn how to care for a garden and grow fruit, how to deal with extremely humid weather, the mold!! also learning about various repairs, electricity and plumbing, we had a leak that turned one lamp into a waterfall, the rcd keeps tripping every time it rains, had to fix a door in the dark after Nicolas got himself trapped in a room when the handle broke during a power outage, the heating system is an air to water heat pump and it took us ages to figure out how to set it up correctly so we spent weeks wearing 3 layers inside the house, I even fell down the stairs!! I'm not used to having stairs inside the house lmao It's a big adjustment when you've always lived in small apartments in big cities all your adult life, but to be honest we love it!! everything feels like a new quest for us to tackle and it is so much fun figuring it all out as we go, reading technical manuals by candle light, the teamwork of installing and assembling furniture and networks, pruning the trees, celebrating every small mundane accomplishment and new skill learned every night over dinner, I may be corny as hell but it all feels like a privilege and an adventure 😭
Media wise we watched the second season of Arcane! This series never fails to make me fall in love with art again, not that I've ever fallen out but I can't say that the whole AI debacle hasn't been ass for the morale. Aesthetically it is a masterpiece. The character design, the cinematography, the mixed media montages aaaa Seeing the work, the skill and care that was put into every frame reminded me of how important and human the storytelling aspect of art really is. I wonder if we will see a shift to the more story driven or conceptual arts when we look back on this period, but I ramble, back to Arcane. I have mostly praise for it, wonderful characters and very touching relationships. I think our only issues were with the pacing being too slow at the start, every character climbing out of a very low point, and then too fast which made the second half feel a bit rushed. This season also felt a bit more tropey than the first one but still really solid. It remains one of the best animated series ever made and I am so happy to see it succeed in this current environment 😭 It feels like teenagehood condensed into a show, we really enjoyed it. I hope we get a season 3!!
Also there was an update in our David Tennant filmography quest! we watched The Politician's Husband and unsurprisingly we loved it!! It was gripping and the acting was brilliant. It is actually what I was expecting Rivals to be like, I realize 🤔 I think it could have used a 4th episode, felt like it ended too quickly and there was room for more, as if they ran out of time to tie things up so they picked the quickest route. But it was really good!! These miniseries are always so engaging and so short, I need mooreee.
We missed our DT nights!! Nicolas spent the last week hunting for more of David's work for us to watch. We've been hosting family for a few days again last week and on top of work and everything else we had to pause them for a bit. But now we are back to our nightly routine and he's over the moon!! Instant mood boost it's embarrassing lmao both of us falling this hard for this guy is too enabling, he even made his name our guest wifi password, we are besotted 😂
Oh! I also I saw a Veilguard Q&A was happening and read a few replies I saw posted here, and it proved to be a huge mistake! It was a disappointing and truly infuriating read. What even happened during the production of this game lmao How come the average fan seems to have a much better grasp on the lore, characters and plot than the people who made it 😭 There is this gaping disconnect between intent and execution. The way that fans are trying to make sense and give meaning to the complete mess that is the writing in an attempt to salvage and preserve the aspects they loved about it is saddening. I am mentally throwing tomatoes at John Epler as we speak. His answers felt so unserious and baffling at best and offensive and petty at worst. It's been eye opening, I could go on a two hour rant but the more I learn and dwell on it the more bitter I become about it all and I'm already seeing ten year old discourse resurface and people getting weird about it so I'll just ..🚶♀️ In my eyes this world and it's characters now belong only to those who love it and lives in my memory 🫡
Anyway, this ended up being at least twice as long as I was planning to make it again 😭 and I still have to catch up with asks aaaa it's been a busy month sorry I'll get to them soon!! Thank you for reading and for the support and for just being here!! I hope you all have a great week 🥺❤️

miss raven, i must ask:
what is your opinion on the overblot monsters as a hear me out👀❓
I wasn't sure if this anon meant the Phantom designs or the OB designs themselves when they said "overblot monsters", so I decided to go ahead and drop my opinions on both things. (And if you want my opinion on the non-OB boys and non-OB boys' Phantoms... they're okay? I have no particular commentary to impart on those.)
My personal Phantoms ranking:
My favorite Phantom design is, hands down, Idia’s. I love how it is composed of shapes that closely resemble the style of the Hercules film, notably the arms and fingers. The collar and head resemble a flaring flame while the wrists seem to resemble Greek columns. But the detail I love the most is how the Phantom's arms and body seem to be made of other Phantoms' busted heads. It's really clever visual storytelling, as this tells us about how Ortho lived in Tartarus with the other Phantoms, how he wants them all to be 'friends' with Idia and the rest of the world, etc. This Phantom in of itself just has so much story significance and even seems to be alluded that the multitude of Phantoms in Tartarus yoink Idia (seen at the end of the Ignihyde CM). This Phantom also has a special physical connection to the OB boy in its design; Idia it literally hooked up to his Phantom with wires, symbolizing his close connection to it. (I didn't see something similar in the other Phantoms, but I do know in the light novel Leona is said to be attached to his Phantom by a blot chain on his ankle.)
I find the designs of Riddle, Azul, and Jamil’s Phantoms cool. They resemble their Disney inspirations, but have one or two flairs that make the designs their own. Riddle's Phantom has spade-shaped spikes protruding from its back and wields a rose tree like a hammer to deliver twisted justice. Azul's Phantom has a crown and trident, which is reminiscent of Ursula once she has robbed them from King Triton. It also has a collar that looks like coral branches jutting out and I enjoy how the ink looks like it is dripping down and forming the tentacles. Finally, Jamil's Phantom is inspired by Jafar's genie form on the torso but its lower half becomes coiled, patterned, and snake-like (like the viper form Jafar takes on when fighting Aladdin). It also has a collar unique to it.
I'm slightly disappointed with the Phantoms of Leona, Vil, and Malleus. These literally just look like the original Disney villains that they are trying to emulate, but with very few changes made to them outside of the stitches and the shape of the glass bottle heads. I do like that Vil's Phantom is the hag version of the Evil Queen (which demonstrates her inner ugliness) and how Malleus's phantom is Maleficent's dragon form (which is just cooler overall) with more exaggerated spines, but this doesn't change the fact that the designs aren't that special.
My personal OB design ranking:
I think Leona and Idia’s designs look cool for the most part.
Pretty much the only thing I dislike about Leona’s is the bare feet, which are easily ignored since the game usually only shows us the torso up. Everything else is gucci o3o)bb Slicked back hair, check! corset that calls attention to his Dorito chip shaped-body, check! The jewelry and extra stuff tied around his waist isn't too cluttered or in the way and coordinates well color-wise. Ah, also... AND I KNOW NONW OF YOU PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE ME BUT I FEEL LIKE I AHVE TO STATE THIS FOR MY OWN SANITY. I didn't realize he was shirtless for a long ass time 😭 I JUST THOGUHT THAT MANE WAS A FLUFFY SHIRT OR CROP TOP OR SOMETHING... I know the truth now, and (at the cost of sounding like Rollo) I'm thankful that the mane exists to cover up Leona's bare chest because I do NOT wanna see that out and about.
Idia has the most "different" vibes to his design, and I have to commend him for that. He looks like some futuristic gremlin come to destroy us all, especially when his electronic mask thing simulates new expressions for him. It's neat how the new armor he's equipped with sharpens his features so he, like his Phantom, more closely resembles the art style of Hercules, and there's just enough blue to balance out the black (and same with the orange-red when he gets mad). My favorite part of OB Idia has to be the lower half; it forms a cool vortex that makes me think of the lost souls swirling around in Tartarus.
I like Riddle’s well enough, but I think it’s less of me actually enjoying the look altogether and more of me having nostalgia for it + liking the Alice in Wonderland details in it. I love the ink webbing (especially in the face and its accessories), the gradient flowers decorating his hips, and the cards spilling out. However, I will admit that the design is very busy and chaotic for the head and the lower half (and maybe that was intentional), so it's hard for my eyes to know what to focus on whenever I see OB Riddle.
Azul, Vil, and Malleus are trying but look sort of awkward in several areas:
I like the shoulders and face for Azul, but below that is all downhill; I've never been a fan of his merform, and that really comes through here. The bottom half just looks kinda unadorned (which makes sense; clothing would limit his mobility). Still... it makes most of him look really uninteresting. Not only that, but his tentacles look wrong (though this is an issue with his general merform and not specifically the OB). They're way too short and the shape and size of them makes me think of inflatable mascots outside of used car dealerships.
I appreciate that Vil's OB design gives the vibes of him wandering into an abandoned castle and fastening together an outfit from a tattered curtain, but the end result is... lacking. The halo crown looks super heavy and impractical, the chest looks sort of bland compared to everything else, the waist has these really out of place protruding... spike... things???? And then there's the slapped-on looking peacock feathers on his legs and the odd feathers to blot textured cloak.
I like all the briar incorporated into Malleus’s OB even if the details are drowned out by the excessive black, but I’m not a fan of the neon green on his horns and tail. Malleus’s most focal points—his face and chest—also look kinda weird to me?? Normally I like slicked back hair, but it looks odd and almost balding on this character. The green/green-grey color of his skin is also unflattering and makes him look like a moldy cabbage.
Jamil and Grim (?) are very confused and unappealing.
In all honesty, the individual pieces of the outfit are okay?? I like the gold accessories + how the veil the skirt flares out. The recurring diamond patterns are are an interesting way to incorporate “scales” without having actual snakeskin. The literal snake hair has potential to be cute, but I hate Hate HATE how it’s styled as a turban (poor sentient hair snakes are probably all twisted up) and the little ink goatee 💀 Combined with everything else, he is way too over-designed no matter where you look. At least everyone else has their detailed elements better spread out… I think it might have looked better if it had like 1-2 less detailed elements and eradicate the goatee.
Grim (?) is a random mishmash of traits from the other OB boys. And it looks bad (even if the point is for nothing in the design to go together well). The worst part is the humanish front legs. No further comment.

And another thing
This might be a hotter take because from what I can tell, everyone was very happy to see Felassan in Veilguard. But I was so disappointed with how they handled him too,,
I'm sorry, but you introduced this character as the kind of person who would blithely allow a demon to brutally slaughter a clan full of (mostly) innocent elves, including children*, with nothing more than a "have fun", for no other reason than he needed some information from that demon; who is implied to come very close to murdering the girl he'd been taking care of since she was a sixteen year old because she almost figured out he isn't actually Dalish; who is basically just stone-cold callous to all the suffering and death around him and only shows at the very end of the story that he did genuinely care about said girl enough to die to give her a chance to keep going in her rebellion, and with the implication (imo) that she was the only reason he didn't help destroy this world with the Dread Wolf
You introduced a character this morally complex, this ruthless and yet genuinely hilarious, a character who is clearly the actual master of deception between him and Solas, whose name is literally a reference to the concept of a deadly threat beneath suspicion,
and your choice for depicting him in this game is to just depict him in flashbacks where he's just a generic commander character, the moral straight man getting mad at Solas for being a little bit shady in his tactics for waging a slave rebellion. Doesn't crack a single joke, only a bit sarcastic in one or two codex entries, pure-hearted good boy friend of Solas whose only contribution that felt in-character to me is that he was the one to push Solas to do the Dread Wolf legends thing.
And it's not like the idea that Felassan was once a more morally pure person before the Veil doesn't appeal to me, but like. They didn't even try to connect this guy to the Masked Empire iteration of the character.
idk what I was expecting, I definitely didn't think they were going to even address the Clan Virnehn thing but like. I guess I was hoping he'd be funny at least. Why is he even called the Slow Arrow before he's doing Slow Arrow things. Why would you have a general called the Slow Arrow. They could have explained this but they didn't.
-
*I know Imshael actually didn't kill the children in Clan Virnehn, but it's not much better that he sent them off to be a burden on another clan when a harsh winter was coming. I also don't know if Felassan knew that he wouldn't tbh.
#veilguard critical#felassan critical#I guess??#he was the best character in the book but he's dfkgkfds#Veilguard Felassan just didn't feel like the guy from the book at all I'm sorry#I'm sorry more things just keep occurring to me rip

i have decided to break my lack of original posting on this blog to bring you my Thoughts on Rot in Paradise. because i played it as soon as i got up this morning and i have scoured for some opinions after finishing it, and now i have my own!!
(and also i posted this on twitter but twitter has such a Shit wordcount that i'm also posting my things here with More Detail)
so! spoilers under the cut, please go and play the game if you haven't. it takes literally an hour (it only took nearly 2 hours for me because i like voice acting by myself and exploring every nook and cranny) and it's also free. so maybe come back into the tag once you're done.
okay, so i noticed quite a number of people being confused and disappointed on the lack of an explanation for the monster. it's brought up in the story as the central thing driving the plot, but it's never explained on what "she" is, why she's compelling people to eat a ton of fish-related food or hell, metal, and why this doesn't impact June at all.
but you know what I think?
i think that that's the point. the focus of rot in paradise isn't supposed to be on the monster.
yeah, it's the thing that pushes the plot along besides June and the gang going on vacation in this island. it's what's causing that uneasiness from the moment that guy grabs June's arm at the drinks, to the sheer unnerving feeling of witnessing people going to the ocean to get Raptured basically. i know i personally felt a chill when i saw that one dude literally eating chains and the other hauling an anchor, as if they're trying to make themselves heavier so they get taken by whatever She is.
but that's not the main point! the main conflict is about June and her friends.
as people have pointed out, this game is about toxic friendships and relationships! it's foreshadowed in the conversation that June has with the gang about her cousin (which i will also get into), and it carries it through the way her friends are horribly warped by this ocean Creature. June goes on a silly little vacation trip with her friends only for them to become so so different from themselves that they lash out at her and even hit her in McCoy's case.
but she still sticks it out with them. through the whole game, even despite their verbal abuse, despite being slapped, despite them being people that she can hardly recognise. she stays with them for the whole game, up until the point where you are given the two options at the very end. and she could still stay with them.
because they're still her friends. she cares about them even if they still hurt her. from the way June still tells Carmen to tell June if she needs anything after Carmen literally tells her to shut up and leave, the way June worries about Vonnie eating seafood even though she continues to stuff herself despite being implied to either hate or make an active choice to not eat seafood, to the way June still trudges out to sea screaming for McCoy to come back to the shore as he wades further in even after he slapped her until her nose bled.
it mirrors the conversation about her cousin, the reason for why June was looking forward to the vacation. that while she did comfort her cousin through all of it, June clearly says that "they were dickheads, and she should have ditched them a long time ago".
but it's funny, isn't it? that June, an outsider to her cousin's friend group, easily sees the pain that her cousin's friends are causing her, and immediately calls it as it is. that her cousin should have left the second they hurt her.
and yet now, when her friends hurt her, even though this was a quick and sudden change that happened in a span of three days, June still sticks around. her friends are dickheads right now, and we can see that in the way they interact with June, but she still stays.
because they're her friends. and how could she just leave them like this if it's something that's causing them to be this way?
so no, i don't think the monster is supposed to be the main picture. we don't need to know what it looks like, or why it needs to do this to the islanders, or how it's even doing it in the first place. it adds to the scariness of the game, as per the Spooktober Game Jam, sure, but that's not the point. might be a bit disappointing to some, but that's not the point.
the point is about June, and the choice that she needs to make at the end of the game.
it's a choice on whether she chooses to be pulled deeper into the tides and be with the friends who hurt her and will continue to hurt her in this way,
or to leave them to their fates, whether deserved or not, and resurface to a world where she's alone without her friends.
and even though the first choice hurts much more in the long run, doesn't the second hurt even more in the moment? knowing that you're alone at the end of all of this?
even if it is the right choice, i'm sure the pain must be unbearable in the moment.
#Rot in Paradise#Rot in Paradise Spoilers#RIP Spoilers#Studio Investigrave#this game isn't supposed to have a happy ending i'm sure. june's gotta deal with it no matter the ending#also because its not super relevant to the contents (more spoilers in tags)#i also see people speculate on why ryan just upped and went in as well#people say its possibly because he tried helping too much that he got sucked in (which i can see it!)#but also i'm wondering if he was sorta on the fence in terms of being got by the monster?#yeah he was on june's side but there was that moment at the bar with the woman and the metal shrapnel that he went-#“uh don't know about that but it did look like a huge chunk”. like he's sort of wavering on it?#but also i wonder if june's words on sunday night got to him. where she thought that maybe von mccoy and carmen were right#and that they were wrong. did that get into ryan's head? did he second guess himself?#did he go into the ocean wanting? leaving after giving june one last reminder of him (the jacket) as some sort of comfort?#man i don't know. but this game do be getting the cogs turning.

I've described myself in the past as "overly-queerbaited" as a way of explaining why it took me so long to come around to Byler endgame as a legitimate possibility... but that's kind of a misleading way of putting it.
Truth is, I've always been too much of a cynical fuck to fall for queerbait... or any other story that promises positive queer rep.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9c12f304736f2dc70899e676a7bdc2fc/55fcf3e45c79fae6-83/s540x810/9e075ba679e1f9628529291ff351a320af85ab76.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb34bd6cb6a169fd7b6d357ad6febf41/55fcf3e45c79fae6-74/s540x810/9d752a1f95827dca8b6da925da2c40d8eebfda83.jpg)
[Sherlock couldn't touch me; I saw this cringe homophobia coming from a mile away. Fans mistaking straight anxiety jokes for meaningful gay subtext was clearly doomed to end in mockery. Nobody deserved to be treated like that... but god, it was easy to predict.]
I think it's a symptom of having grown up under Section 28 -- feeling like I'm being unreasonable for wanting to see queerness normalized is such an ingrained habit that even today I instinctively recoil like a vampire touching sunlight whenever an optimistic queer story falls unrequested into my lap.
But I'm hardly alone in feeling this way -- many queer Millennial and Gen-X fans of Stranger Things are against the idea of Byler because it would ruin the catharsis of watching the gay boy growing up in the same era as we did slowly succumb to the same despair that we did.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/833c5cd42deec69b88141d724699faee/55fcf3e45c79fae6-c9/s540x810/39a850d5a13ba2c24b9e3c2e12d5ed5b43673ed1.jpg)
[For those who haven't played the VR game: Vecna is speaking in this screenshot.]
There's genuine comfort to be found in painful stories -- this type of catharsis is practically the cornerstone of horror as a genre -- so I can't really fault myself or anyone else for wanting it, despite the obnoxious oversaturation of disappointing queer endings in media.
This is the nostalgia show, after all -- and like it or not, for many middle-aged queers in the target audience, nostalgia is shot through with the pain of homophobia and loneliness.
But do you know who else is a hurt queer(-coded) adult who resents happy endings? This cynical fuck:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3895f92b4756f4f4c16d8464b9b13268/55fcf3e45c79fae6-cd/s540x810/1b5f6ac79f618260549c61b3c42423ef78b7c0bc.jpg)
Henry personifies despair and loneliness and the dark urge to take our pain out on others -- and when Will is in the picture, I would argue that he also represents internalized homophobia.
Will might represent who we were -- but Henry represents who we've let ourselves turn into.
And I don't think many of us want to admit to that, because that would involve questioning why we have so much in common with the literal villain of the show; why we're still so consumed with self-pity after 20+ years that we're obsessing over the fate of some kid.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e08c44d356a0107e8b99a686a7526baa/55fcf3e45c79fae6-d1/s540x810/d54ba0c64e70d4e4f7c55d836256d8912ea66e86.jpg)
I'm not suggesting that wanting a less-than-fairytale ending for a fictional gay boy is equivalent to being a child killer lol. It's perfectly valid to want to see your pain acknowledged, and stories which appeal to that desire deserve to exist.
But between Henry's connection to Will and the cycle of abuse themes of the show, it's clear that this particular story simply isn't about wallowing in the bleakness of growing up gay in the 80s, but about self-actualizing in spite of it all.
So I just can't bring myself to want a "relatable" ending for Will.
As much as I struggle to enjoy positive queer rep, I don't want to be so cynical. I'd thrown up so many walls to protect myself as a teenager that I forgot how desperately I wanted to see just one of those painful queer stories end on the same uplifting note that straight stories were always entitled to: with true love overcoming the odds, saving the day, and living happily ever after.

[But I'm A Cheerleader, a surprisingly fun movie about conversion therapy, is proof that stories like this did exist when I was a teen... but finding them in the pre- and early-internet days amidst so much censorship was a tall order.]
What makes Stranger Things different from most queer stories -- and what allowed it to pierce through my defenses and stab me in the gut -- is that it perfectly mimics those bleak, acceptable-to-the-censors stories from my youth -- only this time, the secret uplifting gay plot twist is real.

Not for the sake of shock value or of grabbing some empty woke points at the last second, but because the plan all along was to slap the audience in the face for believing homophobic lies about the existence of queer happiness.
That's some gourmet catharsis, if you ask me.
Just the possibility that my inner child might finally be vindicated has allowed me to truly let myself want the things I want for the first time in 20 years -- and that's the first step towards finally crawling back out into the sunlight.
Happy Pride Month, everyone. 🌈

Maybe This Time - Part Five
Jessie Fleming x Reader
Summary: Jessie can't sleep, and neither can you. Late night discussions ensue. Jessie and you unpack more of your past - and newly confessed feelings.
Warnings: None. Slight mentions of angst, but mostly tons of fluff!
A/N: Previous parts for this series can be found on my masterlist.
Jessie exhaled as she rolled onto her side, waking temporarily from her sleep. She hadn't even opened her eyes before a rush of recollections came to her from the night before.
You liked her in university. You liked her now. Or at least enough to agree to a date.
You were finally - finally - going on a date together. Jessie had waited for this moment for years.
Sure, she'd buried any hope for it for half of those years, but as soon as you came back into her life, everything she'd been distancing herself from came roaring back, and stronger so.
She belatedly realized she was smiling and she let out a contented sigh. She peeked an eye open to see it was still pitch black and she could hear Janine fast asleep.
Without warning, worry and concern started to encroach on the happiness Jessie was feeling.
What if it was really just a casual 'thing to do' to close out a funny story for you? What if you changed your mind? You didn't actually say how deep those feelings had gone way back when and certainly didn't say how deep they were now. Was she just setting herself up for disappointment?
She exhaled again in an effort to calm herself. She closed her eyes for a few seconds, but couldn't keep from reaching for her phone a moment later.
Her chest tightened when she saw a message from you. She didn't hesitate to open it.
"I can't sleep. And for the record, the feelings weren't short lived on my end either."
Jessie's breath hitched as she re-read your message and any lingering veil of drowsiness was now long gone. She swallowed and checked the time stamp. An hour ago.
Her thumb hovered over the screen as she debated whether to reply now or not. With a light huff she tapped out a reply.
"Tell me about these feelings."
She stared at your conversation for several moments, unknowingly holding her breath. She was about to turn off her phone and set it aside when you started to reply.
"You first, Fleming."
"Also. You should be sleeping. You have an early flight."
"Says you. I'm wide awake now. I can sleep on the plane."
"Why do I have to go first?"
"Lol. Hey, I took the first step here, so it's only fair that you tell me more.
"But I actually asked you out in the end. So I'd say we're even. It's your turn."
"It only took you - what - 8 years?"
"I'm teasing. I know it's more complicated than that."
"Slow off the line, but hey, at least you know I'm steady lol. And yeah, it's been complicated. But I don't mind."
"Are you trying to charm me?"
"Depends. Is it working?"
"It is. And it's worked many times before."
"Oh really? Now you definitely have to tell me more."
"Smooth. Well, I don't know, where do you want me to start?"
Start? There's that much? This was going to be way more interesting than Jessie even hoped.
"I guess we can start at the beginning. That art show - was that the first time a date ever came to mind?"
Jessie idly chewed on the corner of her thumb as her remained fixated on the screen and she awaited your response.
"Definitely not. I always thought you were cute and I found you really easy to talk to. So things just grew from there. And really, do you think I came to your games just because I wanted to watch football? lol."
"By the way. That reminds me. You never invited me to your games. I had to invite myself! So if you're wondering why I didn't think you had any interest in me - there's an example of why."
"Y/N. Come on. I didn't want to make a big thing out of it. It felt so cringy and showboat-y. I'm not like that and you know it. And you were busy. And you didn't like football! Why would I assume you'd want to spend 2-3 hours at a game?"
"Yeah, that's the part where you missed the whole concept that I liked you lol. That of course I'd want to show up and support you and learn more about what you're passionate about. Anyway, just saying, you played it awfully cool all the time. So yeah, after the art show incident, I guess it just felt like confirmation that I'd been trying too hard to read into things, so from there I just assumed it was a one-sided thing."
"I'm sorry. It definitely wasn't."
"I'm afraid to ask. But even when you were dating your exes, are you saying you liked me then?"
"If I'm being honest with myself, it's fairly obvious why my exes didn't like you. And it has nothing to do with you as a person - it was about my dynamic with you. I was upset with them at the time, but, truthfully, they had reason to criticize."
"Okay, your turn now."
"Wait – you didn't really answer. Are you saying you liked me when you were with your exes?"
"Yes lol that's exactly what I'm saying. I couldn't even admit it to myself at the time though. It just seemed pathetic when I knew - or thought I knew - that you didn't like me like that. I played it off like, "She's my friend! How dare you!" But, yeah, I came to you for things that I should've come to my girlfriends about. I'm sorry – looking back on this, it was really shitty of me to do that to you; counting on you for emotional support like a girlfriend might. Like when I was upset, when I was excited, you were the one I came to. That wasn't fair to you or them."
Jessie sighed. Those times did create a lot of angst for her. But, she also cherished being the one you trusted and relied on. It had been bittersweet, really. But this changed things entirely. You'd come to her like a girlfriend? Your words - not hers. It made her heart race.
"I really was your friend though. I mean, a friend who was head over heels for you, but a friend. And friends support each other. But I see what you're saying too. And it was hard sometimes being close with you, but not as more."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
Jessie couldn’t believe what she was reading. The revelations that were coming out challenged everything she’d known - or thought she’d known - for years. It was mind boggling and elation tingled in the tips of her fingers and toes. She had to be dreaming.
"I wish we were actually talking right now and not texting."
Jessie looked at the time before glancing over at Janine. She really shouldn't get up. But who was she kidding?
She carefully got out of bed and gingerly walked over to her things to slip on a pair of sweats over her shorts, grab a hoodie, shoes and the hotel key. She glanced back once more at Janine's sleeping form and tip-toed to the door, ever so slowly unlocking it – wincing when the deadbolt clicked open – and swiftly stepped out into the hall. She exhaled slowly as she kept the handle turned and softly closed the door.
She tied her hair back with the elastic around her wrist as she headed to the elevator and took it down to the main floor. A tight smile formed across her lips as she walked past the front desk on her way outside.
As the entrance doors slid closed behind her, she peered around and found a bench alongside the building, dimly lit by nearby streetlights. She took up a seat and called you.
The phone rang a couple of times before you picked up.
"Hello?"
Jessie smiled at your voice, hoarse with sleep.
"Did I wake you?" She asked.
"No, I just didn't expect you to actually call," you chuckled, your voice already clearing up. "How are you calling me, anyway? Did you go somewhere else?"
"Yeah," Jessie replied, stifling a yawn as she relaxed into the bench some. "I just went outside."
"Jess," you said, somewhere between chiding and impressed. "We could've kept texting. Or, you know, I could actually let you get some sleep."
"Sleep is for the weak," Jessie joked, twiddling with the tie of her hoodie.
"Since when? You were the one always keen to get a full night's sleep," you teased.
"Well," Jessie started slowly, feeling the push and pull of what she wanted to say next. "If it means I get to talk to you...I don’t mind losing a bit of sleep."
"Wow," you said, dragging the word out with a light laugh. Jessie's face flared with heat immediately. "I did not know you were such a charmer." As if you read Jessie's mind that had begun to swirl with anxiety, you went on, "Don’t get me wrong – I really like it. It’s just new, but in a great way."
Jessie huffed good naturedly as a small boost of confidence settled in. "That's fair. I mean, as we've covered, I didn't exactly make my feelings clear." She cracked a smirk. "Not such a loser, now, am I?"
"Loser?" You asked incredulously. "Why in the world would you say that?"
Jessie felt heat rushing to her face once more and she rubbed the back of her neck. "I don’t know. I just felt that way. Sometimes. Like – seeing all of these hot girls and guys hit on you whenever we were out, making you laugh, and swoon, and all I ever really could manage to do was offer to get a refill of whatever you were drinking or offer to let you copy my notes if you missed class."
"Jessie. You're ridiculous. You were the absolute farthest thing from a loser. My God. Let's be really clear about that. And 'swoon' is a strong word, okay? I did not swoon over anyone. Anyone that wasn't you, anyway," you finished with a faint lilt in your voice.
"Oh whatever," Jessie protested though her face felt even warmer now. "You most definitely didn't swoon over me. You don't have to pretend."
"Excuse me," your voice rising to match hers, "You were the smartest girl in class. And so cute. And witty. I know you think being shy was a bad thing - but I found you endearing for it. Made it that much more special when we became friends and you opened up around me. And, you know, jocks were never my type, but the fact that you coupled it with academic smarts and becoming one of the people I was closest to and trusted most – swoon worthy"
"Uh huh," Jessie dismissed though it felt like her head was buzzing now. She swallowed the excitement that was bubbling in her throat. "Well, all I can think about is that one night we were at that silly bar near campus and I got you a new drink – you took a sip, handed it back telling me to hold it for you, and then ran out on the dance floor with [another girl]."
”Oh my gosh,” you said, scandalized though both of you laughed. “Don’t you dare. Anytime I tried to get you to dance you always refused! You made it seem like torture anytime you had to! And it was my favourite song! I didn’t think you’d want to dance.”
"Right, sure," Jessie continued to tease, though your proclamations were accurate. "Well no worries – I held your drink and protected it with my life while you danced up on some other girl."
"Oh my God," you went on with a light laugh. "I'm sorry!" You clicked your tongue. "Listen, I can't change it, but what I can promise you is that next time we're out and I feel like dancing, we're dancing together. I won't take 'no' for an answer this time."
"Well hold on now," Jessie protested in jest, drawing another laugh out of you. She hummed and went on. "Kidding. I suppose I can put up with dancing if it's with you."
"You're making me blush," you told her. The way she laughed, she thought you were kidding, but it was true. "Well, I'd love that. Consider me flattered. I've been waiting a long time for it. Remember when [an ex] and I left abruptly during [a friend's] birthday because we were fighting?"
"Yeah," Jessie said, feeling a fleeting wave of aggravation at the recollection of that night. She remembered your ex storming out, you being in a foul mood and leaving shortly after.
"I mean, that was a shitty night. Too much drama. But anyway, [y/ex] was mad because she caught me looking at you from the dance floor one too many times. I never told you – for obvious reasons."
“Yeah right,” Jessie readily dismissed. She recalled maybe seeing you glance over now and then, but it didn’t mean anything.
"It's true," you refuted simply and unbothered. "I think you'll learn that there were a lot of moments like that."
"Well, I find that hard to believe. But I suppose," she relented. "And there are definitely a lot of moments like that from my side, too."
"Tell me one," you said before quickly adding, "Well. I want to know them all, but I'll go easy on you for now. Let's start with one."
Jessie shuffled down in the seat of the bench and played with the seam of her sweats. She pursed her lips together as she rifled through memories until her mind hitched on one, a twinge going through her chest at the mere recollection of it. She went to consider other options, but whether it was the desire to keep ensuring things were different this time or maybe it was just the lull of night lowering her inhibitions, she decided to stick with this memory. She cleared her throat.
"Uh. I guess graduation comes to mind. Not convocation itself, but, you know, that last night we saw each other before I moved," Jessie started, her eyes on the ground as she began now distractedly picking at the wooden slats of the bench.
"I remember that," you said, your voice more somber than before.
"Yeah," Jessie said simply before a stilted laugh escaped her. "That was a hard night."
"Tell me," you gently encouraged.
Jessie exhaled quietly, giving a listless shrug before stating very matter of fact, "I thought it was the last time I'd ever see you."
Her chest was tight and her body felt heavy as the memories and emotions flooded back. She knew every detail of you that night – she'd wanted to remember every aspect and hold it close. Despite the fact that all these other truths were being revealed now, it didn't undo how heartbroken Jessie had felt at that time.
"Don't you start – then I'm going to cry," you told Jessie as your eyes grew watery and you forced a short laugh.
Jessie tried to laugh, too, but it was feeble at best and instead she felt more tears welling. She tried to muster another laugh, but it came out as more of a sob as you watched her and your lip soon quivered.
"Come here," you said, voice tight as you opened your arms to her.
The two of you collided into each other as you both rushed into the hug. Much to her contempt, Jessie began sniffling immediately and her shoulders shook with sobs, pulling a watery laugh out of you as you gave her a squeeze. The squeeze was encouragement enough for Jessie to tighten her grip on you – clutching you almost desperately in her arms and terrified to let you go.
"Jess," you said, your voice barely audible as you waded through emotion.
Another sob escaped Jessie as she pulled you even tighter to her. She felt your body shudder as your own tears overtook you.
"I'm so proud of you," you managed to say through tears, your head resting against Jessie's. "You're going to do amazing things – even more than you've already done. I’m just going to miss you like hell." You finished with a sad laugh.
Jessie subconsciously dug her fingers into your back. "I'm going to miss you, too," was all she could manage through her tears. You sniffled.
"If you need someone to keep you grounded when you're an even bigger superstar than you are now, you just give me a call," you laughed.
Jessie felt words burning in her throat and she felt powerless to stop them. They were words she'd said to you before – more specifically, returned to you. Anytime you said them to her – flippantly or otherwise, regardless, never the way she wanted you to say them. This time, she allowed herself to say them the way she really felt them.
"I love you," she said, tucking her chin against you. "So much." She felt like her chest was about to explode and she bit down hard on her lip as she looked up to the sky and tried to fight off this persistent stream of tears.
"I love you, too," you returned, voice still thick with emotion, but a light laugh punctuating your reciprocation.
Jessie chest panged once more.
"Text me as soon as you land, okay?" You told Jessie as you pulled away from the hug. Jessie's touch lingered until she forced herself to let go.
She sniffled and nodded, wiping irritably at the next tear that fell. "I will."
"And I know you're going to be super busy, but let me know when I could come by for a visit," you said brightly through your remaining tears. You forced another laugh. "Look at me – I'd never been to a football game in my life until I met you. And now I'm offering to fly halfway around the world to watch you play."
Jessie mustered up a smile, blinking back more tears. "Yeah, I'll let you know." She knew she wouldn't and it broke her heart to lie to you.
"Okay," you said as you nodded, smiling bravely for her. "I know you have to go, so I won't keep you. We'll talk soon. Have a good flight tomorrow, okay? I love you."
Jessie swallowed and returned a brave smile of her own. "I love you, too."
She was startled from her thoughts as you spoke.
"Really? We said we'd visit each other."
"I know," she replied, wisps of guilt setting in. "I just-" She took a breath as she worked to find the words. "it was hard...being only your friend. I, I think I knew that moving to London, that I needed to move on. I'm sorry I didn't know a better way to do it," she finished quietly.
"Ah," you voiced, taking a couple of seconds. "I understand. I'm sorry it was so painful – the last thing I would've ever wanted is to hurt you."
"No, you don't need to apologize," Jessie assured you. "I know you weren't trying to hurt me." She took a breath. "I owe you an apology."
"Hm? Why?" You asked, perplexed.
"You know how you asked me recently why we stopped talking?" She asked. "I wasn't being fully honest with you. I knew I was pushing you away. And I'm sorry – for then and for now, for acting like I didn't know any better. I knew I was hurting you. I just...I didn't know how to move on if you were still in my life."
Jessie felt emotions rising in her chest and she continued.
"I know it probably doesn't mean anything. But, it broke my heart to do it. I was miserable. And it was so hard to not talk to you – to tell you about my day, big things and small, and to not hear about yours. To not know how you were doing. I missed you more than you know."
The line was silent for a few, heavy seconds and Jessie felt her anxiety start to build. Her throat was dry and she was about to speak when you cut in.
"Sorry. I just wish I was there. Or you were here," you said, relieving Jessie of her concerns immediately. "I just wish I could hug you, because you don’t need to apologize. I'm not upset with you. Thank you – for being honest with me. Maybe this isn't right, but it makes me feel so much better to know what was actually happening. I hate that you were hurting, and it hurt me too at the time, but, all of this just makes me excited for what we're trying to explore now."
A smile had spread across Jessie's face. "Good. Me too. And yeah," her smile grew and she picked at the bench once more. "I wish we were together right now, too." She meant to leave room for you to reply, but her nerves got the better of her and she talked on. "But anyway, next weekend will come soon enough."
You chuckled. "I guess that's true. It's been 8 years – what's another week."
"Exactly," she laughed, unable to fully quiet the smile on her face. She glanced up, idly noting the subtle change in the colour of the sky. "Shit. I hate to do this, but I should probably go. The sun's starting to come up."
"Oh my gosh, of course. Don't worry about it. Thank you. For calling me. You really didn't need to, but, I really enjoyed talking with you."
"Don't mention it," Jessie replied, cheeks starting to strain with how much she was smiling. "I love talking with you. You know that."
"I do," you told her. "I'm very lucky. Now go. This can't turn into those nights where we just keep talking and talking despite saying 'bye' a dozen times and then one of us just falls asleep at the other's place," you finished with a laugh. Jessie remembered those nights well.
"No, I'm not ready to answer the line of questions that would come up if the team found me asleep on this bench," she joked. She smiled further at the laugh it drew from you.
"No way. But you better brace yourself for the questions Janine's going to throw at you. It would just be way too easy if she sleeps through it all."
"Yeah," Jessie rolled her eyes affectionately. "You're probably right." She straightened up and slapped a hand down purposefully on her leg. "Okay, I'm going now. But, it was great talking with you. For the second time tonight," she added with a chuckle. Her face began to warm. "Hopefully you can still get some sleep tonight. Um, sweet dreams."
"Well, if they're of you, then they certainly will be," you teased, causing Jessie's face to flare up even more. "I hope you can get some sleep too. If not, then hopefully you can sleep on the plane. Text me when you can. Oh, and don't think I didn't catch that you said you were 'head over heels' for me," your voice light and teasing. "We'll unpack that next time we talk."
"Y/N!" Jessie exclaimed, but the line had gone dead. She glanced at her phone, mouth agape at how you'd hung up on her. A text came through.
"Goodnight! (morning?) Sweet dreams, Jess. 😘"

UTY!Flowey, "lore" and how to criticize a fan prequel without being an insufferable pedantic, a guide by Biscia.
(for my muskless fellows, here's a transcript of my thread on Undertale Yellow that I posted on Twitter. enjoy!)
There's this really frustrating attitude in fan spaces i like to call "lorepilling" where people are substantially more concerned with encyclopedic knowledge of details & minutiae (so called "lore") in place of full-text thematic/narrative analysis as if the two are mutually interchangeable.
It's especially common in large franchises and story heavy videogames, and it's like... Are You Treating This Piece Of Art Like A Trivia Battle Or Are You Treating It Like A Story
This is coming from a person who is also deeply autistic about UTDR trivia btw, I'm just saying that when it comes to transformative *stories*, depending on the impact it has on character, themes, and narrative structure... lore is expendable.
Ultimately this is why most of the UTY criticism i see (on twitter specifically) falls flat. What does it matter if "lore" means Flowey couldn't chronologically be there when the justice human fell, as long as the game narratively justified his presence in the story in a compelling way?
The real criticism, in the end, is that it didn't.
He's a plot central, main cast character from the canon returning in a cast of mostly OCs and what does he have to show for it? An admittedly sick boss battle in 1/3 endings, sure but... not much else. He has no significant "presence" in the story, no tie, interaction, or even just... an opinion on the rest of the cast. Which is a huge miss when Flowey's meta role is to be Thee completionist player mirror. He's the OG lorepilled UT fan! He's an opinionated little shit!
This isn't to say that UTY *didn't* engage w/ his metanarrative. When me and @a-town-called-hometown first started playing the game (we were both skeptical of Flowey's inclusion), he immediately said "It would be really cool if they made it so this has been going on for a while and Clover has no idea". Which is precisely what the game did in the neutral ending, and what I will openly say was the most well written & well executed part of this game's story...
...a part we almost didn't see, because the pacifist ending disappointed us so much we lost all will to replay.
To put it in the words of my friend Mel @clowwwnbytes, there's a deafening hollowness to UTY Flowey's motivations & core principles where his guilt towards Chara—and resulting black and white thinking—should be. You're telling me Mr Kill-or-be-killed, "sacrificing yourself to do the right thing is stupid", would stand there after 1000s of failed attempts to make Clover survive, look on as they make the same mistake Asriel he did, and fondly call them friend? Cue the guitar, roll the credits?
He would lose it. Oh my god he would lose his goddamn mind, he would throw the nastiest temper tantrum in the world. Are you serious? How dare you. How DARE you. All this effort, all my patience, and you just let yourself DIE for a few worthless idiots? I should've let you ROT!
*clears throat* sorry got a bit too into character. as i was saying.
I can understand a UT prequel wanting to distance itself from the canon Chara storyline in order to form its own identity, but then turning around and choosing Insane About Chara The Character™ for a sidekick is... far from optimal. In the end, Flowey comes across as underutilized and inconsistent, with a whole lot of wasted potential.
This is an issue I have with UTY's character writing (original AND returning) and story structure as a whole. Lots of inconsistent character arcs, tonal dissonance, overuse of situational sadness... it's an amateurish work, after all, and you can feel it. There's no shame in that.
(Though, there ARE some issues that i take more seriously with its writing, especially when it comes to its two main female characters—Ceroba's lack of narrative agency and depth borders on misogynistic writing imo. But that's a topic for another day)
Over all, UTY was an incredible piece of collaborative transformative work, with gorgeous art and a genuinely incredible OST, which... would have benefited from more experienced writers. But hey, you can only ever learn by trying!
For all it could've been a better story, it certainly did not fail to entertain: both when my friend was playing it, and after in our many discussions of its writing, its faults and how it could've been improved (royal scientist!ceroba character fix you will always be famous. to ME!)
I'm sure this project served as an incredible source of experience for the developers: as individual creators AND as a team. I look forward to their future projects!
but also if i have to see another person say UTY is better than Undertale i might turn into The Jonker.
end of the essay! really couldn't stand any of the pedantic ""criticism"" I'd seen of this fangame so far, so i had to say my piece as someone more versed in analysis. happy to elaborate on anything in the replies or in my inbox!

Snippet Sunday
I don't usually post snippets for fics that I'm already in the process of posting, but I'm aware it's been an age since I updated it feels like home to me (writing has been a struggle but it's coming this week, I promise - most likely on Tuesday) so I thought I might as well post a fun fire-fam snippet from the wedding in this story!
--
“Oh, no, please do feel free to spill, baby brother,” Maddie said. “I want to hear all about the pigtails that were pulled to make this happen.”
“There were no pigtails,” Evan groused.
“Uh, excuse me,” Eddie said, raising his hand to interrupt. “But as the person who almost ended up with a broken ankle for the high crime of having Tommy’s attention, I beg to differ about the lack of pigtails.”
“What?!” Hen asked, looking torn between concern and delight.
“You realise you just called yourself a pigtail?” Evan sniped at Eddie, pouting at him.
“Wait,” Nash said, frowning, his brows furrowed.
Tommy froze, willing his brain to come up with something to distract Nash away from the conclusion he was inevitably drawing, wanting to spare Evan from being on the receiving end of his captain’s wrath on his birthday. While Nash was never anywhere near as harsh as Gerrard, Tommy knew that he was no slouch in the discipline department.
He was somewhat surprised that Eddie had even brought this incident up in front of him but Tommy knew that he was also operating on very little sleep (he’d gotten some hilarious messages and videos from the failed bachelor party) so he likely hadn’t thought the comment through.
“That was how you injured your ankle and had to call out of work for a week?” Taking the silence as confirmation, Nash sighed exasperatedly and turned to give Evan a disappointed look. “Buck.”
“I ended up going over to Evan’s house and kissing him,” Tommy blurted out, flushing when all the attention immediately diverted to him.
“Really?” Eddie said, staring at him. "That was how it happened?"
“So, what, he opened the door and you just laid one on him?” Karen asked, confused.
“No, we were inside,” Tommy corrected. “And we spoke about – things –”
“Buck going Full Buck and maiming Eddie because he couldn’t just ask to go to a basketball game,” Chimney supplied helpfully.
“I asked you,” Evan retorted.
“Kid, do you remember the conversations we’ve had about talking to the wom – the people you’re dating?” Nash asked. To Tommy’s surprise, he didn’t look upset – more resignedly amused. “You realise that applies to the w – people you want to date as well.”
“See, it’s not my fault that you didn’t make that clear,” Evan said, slinging an arm around Nash’s shoulders and giving him an innocent smile.

I'm watching the edited version of the War Games (it's on BBC4 right now and my parents wanted to see it), so, have some thoughts.
I'm normally a bit iffy on colourisation but this is genuinely very well done. The titles are gorgeous.
Squishing it into 90 mins makes the opening very zippy. The pace feels a shade too quick if anything.
It also gets a bit weird when the cliffhanger is turned into continuous action.
This is despite the fact that they only cut about 10 mins of episode one.
They drink a lot of tea in the War Games but it comes across as even more when you cut out of the non-tea-drinking bits.
OK, there's some very fun editing around the redcoat and Buckingham remembering the mist coming down. (Dare I say possibly an improvement on the original?)
But then it goes back to feeling too zippy, but least because episode 3 is brutally cut. Very little of it left.
Gah, I'm trying to like this, because it's clearly been lovingly made and the colourisation is genuinely superb, but the grinding relentlessness of the War Games has been replaced by rattling through the plot at a frenzied pace and it's not really working for me.
Ooh, Murray Gold's Master theme has been added over the War Chief's appearance. Not sure how I feel about that, but it's certainly an interesting choice.
They've dealt with the cliffhanger issue at the end of episode 4 by taking it out entirely.
The little added CGI bits are not hugely successful - they look oddly plasticky. Which is a bit disappointing, because have I mentioned how good the colourisation is?
It's taken my dad until the episode six cliffhanger to note the place where the original cliffhanger was.
(My mum has given up because she doesn't like how much fighting there is. Not sure if the original edit would have been any better on that score.)
Episodes 6 and 7 are so thoroughly chopped up that it's tricky to trace the original storyline. It's neatly done but it's not really the War Games any more.
More of the Master's theme when the War Chief admits to knowing the Doctor.
My dad comments that this bit seems like it was inspired by the Prisoner (which he also watched when it first aired).
It feels a bit weird when it switches from Murray Gold to 1960s incidental music.
This really centres the War Chief et al over the rest of the storyline.
"Complete loyalty and devotion" - oh, Jamie. This loses a lot of character beats in favour of the Time Lord-centric storyline, but not all of them.
Oof, their last desperate attempt to escape is still just as grim and desperate in the edit. Like there's still part of me wondering if they might somehow get away this time.
There are new Who-style images of Gallifrey on the view screen.
"Is the next episode The Trial of a Time Lord?" asks my dad, who has seen all of Doctor Who, but mostly not very recently.
The middle bit of episode 10 is cut, which means that I can watch the ending without crying for once.
Lots of establishing shots of Gallifrey.
The too old/too young/too thin shows a series of New Who Doctors. Not entirely sure how I feel about that choice either.
And it ends with the Doctor regenerating in the TARDIS - again, New Who style - before the date ticks back and forth erratically between 1970 and 1980, a joke that will appeal to a small number of people that includes me, and finally the very opening scene of Spearhead from Space.
I think if you accept the premise that a 90-min version of the War Games could be done, it's about as good as it could be. A few of the choices make it pretty clear that this is primarily for a New Who audience - particularly that it becomes a very Time Lord-centric story - not really for existing fans of the War Games.
Still, I wasn't expecting to love the colourisation as much as I did, and it made me wish I could watch a colourised version of all 10 episodes.

EPILOGUE | you and me, always and forever.
'it's nice to have a friend' masterlist + playlist | previous chapter
PAIRING: jamie tartt x fem!reader
WORD COUNT: 3.7k
SUMMARY: jamie and reader go to liv's wedding and after, jamie has a magical moment of his own prepared.
WARNINGS: language
A/N: and welcome to the final chapter and epilogue of inthaf! i can't thank you all enough for reading and enjoying this story, and joining me on this ride. from the title and summary, i think you can tell what's going to happen and i hope you enjoy their happy ending!
"Marry me today, so you can get double the gifts!" Jamie proposed enthusiastically, but you shook your head profusely. Not because you thought it was a bad idea — you two were always trying to come up with ways to get more presents, — but because you knew you were both too young to get married.
Jamie, both disappointed by you turning down his proposal and the idea of more gifts, stands up from where the two of you were seated in the backyard and starts marching back inside the house with purpose. "I'll ask Auntie then if she'll let me marry you!"
"Jamie, you're such a dork! Hold on!" You chased after him.
"Oh, honey it was so sweet and so cute! He was so shy about it, too, you know. And I know you didn't like it when I mentioned it, and you were blushing so much even if you said you didn't want to marry Jamie! Oh, if they could see you two now, on the way to a real proposal this time..."
Your mom trails off at the end, after going on a whole recap of the first time Jamie proposed to you (four more instances followed, each one getting less and less serious as you two got older).
"Mom, I'm glad you're happy that Jamie and I are together and I know you've been wanting grandkids, but please slow down. It hasn't even been a year!" You remind her, plopping down on your couch in exasperation.
You're not really sure either how you and your mom got to the topic of marriage. You called her to ask about their travel details since they were coming to visit in a few weeks and you mentioned brownies once, which led your mom down a slippery train of thought.
Your mom sighs into the phone, "Oh sweetheart, you know you and Jamie's relationship has been a long time coming. That boy has loved you since you were kids! I'm surprised he's even waited eight months at this point before popping the question. I mean, don't you want to marry him?"
"Of course, I do!" You answer a lot faster than you intended, so you take a moment before continuing. "It's just that I don't want you to get in my head so much that I end up pressuring Jamie to propose when he isn't ready." Which really was the truth. You and Jamie had never been happier than you were now after you two started dating.
After he recovered from the injury after the Man City game, Jamie took you on a proper first date. You went to a formal restaurant and had a great time, but the two of you were already hanging out since that morning. The "date" was just the end of an already great day spent with him, and that's usually what most of the days you were together would be like.
Today was just like that, though you would be a little busier compared to your usual days since you'd also be a maid of honor for Liv the whole time.
You glance at the clock and suddenly realize you have to start getting ready to leave. "Mom, I have to go now, but remember to send me your schedule, okay? See you soon, love you," you hang up the phone and head to your bedroom to get your dress ready to pack.
Liv had already organized that the bridal party would be getting ready together and you were now running late. You start bolting for the door when it opens wide and you're greeted by your boyfriend with an identical surprised expression on his face.
"Jamie!" You exclaim, before noticing how he's already in his wedding attire, minus the coat which he had hanging on his arm. He looked incredibly handsome and you almost let yourself get distracted by it, but focus back on the wedding. You can let yourself be distracted later tonight. "You didn't have to be this early. We could've just met up at the venue."
"I know, but I wanted to see my beautiful girlfriend before she got too busy to kiss me," Jamie wraps his arms around you and gently kisses you. You appreciated the gesture and deepened the kiss, but pulled back after recalling the time.
"Well then, since you're here, help me carry my bags to the car." You hand him your duffle bag and grab your purse before you two head out.
Jamie left his car running, which was amazingly still there when you reached it, and you two headed to the venue together. He had brought you to the place enough times when Liv would call while you two were together so that you didn't have to direct him there.
As you two usually did when you were together, you spent the whole time talking about the events that happened when you weren't. On the way, Jamie narrated the new bizarre training sessions with Roy as their new coach and how he always happened to be the main target of the painful ones, to no one's surprise. You then talked about how one of your students nearly caused a biohazard after knocking over multiple trays of cultured bacteria.
You weren't sure how many stories you exchanged till you finally reached the venue and started heading to where the bridesmaids were getting ready.
"What're you going to do till the wedding starts then?" You ask Jamie as you reach the room, who simply shrugs.
"Eh, I'll find something. Go on, I'll see you later, love," he kisses you on the cheek and smiles before heading back to the car.
You smile to yourself, before heading into the already hectic dressing room. There were already several people there getting ready, so you silently make your way to Liv to cater to her every need. She was never one to be a bridezilla, but any person would be stressed out on their wedding day, so you wanted to try your best to soothe her worries.
By the start of the wedding ceremony, you were standing in front of a fan to stop all the sweating. You were glad you had already mastered running around in heels with how much you did it that morning alone.
"Okay, we're starting soon," the wedding organizer reminded the party. "Get into positions, please."
You move in line with the other bridesmaids and take the arm of your partner, who you think is one of Freddie's college friends but never really took it upon yourself to get to know him better. He was quite nice, in your limited interactions.
Once the doors open and you start walking, you try and focus on the actual procession, but your eyes immediately start looking for Jamie. You try and be subtle with it, not even moving your head, and you manage to spot him on the left side. When he catches you looking, he gives you a quick wink and you have to hold back a smile as you reach the end of the aisle.
The wedding went smoothly, much to your relief. You had spent most of the vows portion trying not to cry or not to protest when Liv stated that Freddie was her best friend. But it was a beautiful ceremony, so it was worth it.
You were now at the reception and after a quick scare with one of the entrees, you were now relaxing at your table next to Jamie, who had not let go of your left hand since you found him. He had been caressing your fingers and weirdly, it was soothing you.
Because of it, it was easy for him to invite you to dance. Neither of you were much dancers as kids — you discovered as much when you went to most of your school dances together, — but Jamie seemed to have improved enough that he could lead you through the movements.
"Christ, maybe I should take you to some beginner dancing lessons together sometime." Jamie teased, and you faked offense. All he could do was laugh at your reaction before adding, "Learning proper footwork wouldn't hurt."
"You truly are a charmer, babe," You roll your eyes, but still allow him to pull you closer as you continue to slow dance.
As the song ended, you pulled away but kept your hands in his. You smile and he mirrors the expression, but there is something else in Jamie's eyes as he looks at you. You had already seen the look of love from him, but this was different like it was something stronger.
Without thinking, you immediately tell him, "I love you, Jamie." It didn't matter how many times you said it, Jamie still felt the giddy feeling in his chest when the words left your mouth. He'd never felt like that with anyone else, and he hoped it never went away.
"I love you too, (Y/N)," Jamie replied and now you were the one with the warm feeling in your heart. You look away from him for a second and realize that it's almost time for your surprise.
You turn back to him, "I gotta get on stage. I'll see you in a bit." Jamie looks confused, but you wink at him and start heading towards the microphone.
"Hello everyone, I hope you're enjoying the night so far." You start, drawing everyone's attention to you. Christ, you can't believe you agreed to this, but it beat making a whole speech instead.
"For those who don't know me, I'm (Y/N), Liv's maid of honor! You may now be asking yourself why I'm standing in front of you today. Well, for some backstory, Liv and Freddie had been scrambling for a performance for their wedding a few weeks ago. They then just so happened to pull up some of my old videos from university and decided, hey, why not get a close friend to perform for free, then? So, I've decided to honor their wishes and perform the song that was playing the night they met, becoming the soundtrack to their relationship. This is 'Kiss Me,'"
You spent the entire performance making sure you didn't mess up and finally, luck was on your side. Liv and Freddie never looked happier to be in the middle of the dance floor, as if they were reliving the first time they saw each other. That was enough motivation to continue the show, making sure you hit every note.
After everyone claps for you, you make your way down the side of the stage, where Jamie had been waiting for you. Without another word, Jamie takes you in his arms and kisses you deeply. You're lucky you were in the corner of the room, otherwise you'd have to deal with everyone's whistles and 'oohs and aahs.'
"What was that for?" You say breathlessly after pulling away and Jamie just smirks.
"You've been singing it for the past three minutes. Didn't you want someone to kiss you?" He points out and you can't help but laugh.
"Yes, very much so." You affirm.
You two head back to your seats and for the first time, you can just sit back and enjoy the wedding, while also promising yourself that you won't be a bridesmaid again till you get married.
"Okay, it's time for the bouquet toss!" Liv announces and the women at the wedding start crowding in the middle of the room.
You sigh and look at Jamie, who simply smirks and nods toward the group. "Go on, love. You have to be one with the team, right?" You stick your tongue out at him, before getting up from your chair and standing at the back of the group. Lessens the chances of catching it.
But they're never zero. As Liv tosses it up, it seems like it was aimed towards you and before you knew it, the bouquet was in your hands. It takes a second to sink in before Liv starts squealing at the sight and you're brought back to your senses.
The girls start circling around you and you can hear some of the guys start teasing Jamie, who seemed unfazed by it all. Once the crowds disperse, you walk back over to your boyfriend with an amused look on your face.
"Well then, Jamie. Guess you have to start getting ready then." You tease, simply just to mess with your boyfriend. You laugh before he pulls you in and wraps an arm around you.
Little did you know, he's been ready all night. And truthfully, Jamie had been ready all his life. In the past, he never understood what people meant by marrying your best friend, but now he did. He understood it clearer than ever.
As the party starts to die down and people start to depart, you decide it's time to get some rest too. You walk over to Liv and Freddie to bid them goodbye and both newlyweds hug you tightly as a show of gratitude.
"Really, thank you so much," Liv repeats and you just smile at her. Your best friend looks right past you, but before you can follow her line of sight, she asks, "But before you go, could you get my purse in the dressing room?"
You agree, thinking nothing of it since you had seen Liv leave a bit earlier, but the moment you leave the reception hall, Liv and Freddie move closer to Jamie. "Is everything ready?" Liv asks and Jamie nods confidently.
Some of his teammates as well as Roy and Keeley had been working all day to decorate his house. Like he always was, Jamie was stubborn about how he wanted it to be designed, which is why so many of them had to come over and why he made them update him with pictures every hour.
But weirdly enough, the whole day, he's felt relatively calm. There were nerves, sure, but being with you was already enough to relax him. Jamie had no doubt in his mind that he wanted to marry you and was sure you wanted the same.
"Okay, make sure to keep your back straight when you kneel. It looks weird in the pictures when you're hunched over," Freddie reminded him and Jamie nodded in acknowledgment.
There weren't going to be any pictures though, since Jamie knew you wanted it to be private. And frankly, with how much of his life was open to the public, he wanted something like this to be just for the two of you.
But of course, the carefree feeling didn't last long. As you were on the way home, the anxiety started to rise up in Jamie and he decided to keep one hand in yours to try and calm him down. You had started to notice him getting fidgety, so you started caressing his hand with your own like he did earlier.
"Hey, let's just stay at my place tonight. It's nearer to the venue and it's pretty late, anyway." Jamie had pointed out before you got in the car and you didn't see any reason to argue.
You spent half your time there anyway and have been victim to Roy Kent waking you up at ungodly hours for Jamie's training, where many times you've stopped yourself from pulling Jamie closer to stay with you because you knew he'd give in and the knocking would never stop. You loved Jamie, but you loved your peaceful sleep more.
Maybe it was the stress of the day getting to you, but you truly didn't notice anything too out of the ordinary from Jamie. When you pulled up to his house and got out of the car, you still hadn't suspected anything. Jamie rushed ahead to the front door though, which you did find interesting considering he never cared how his house looked before.
As you reach the door, he comes back out carrying a blindfold and you're alarmed. "Jamie! We're still outside, oh my god!"
He stifles a laugh, "It's not that! Christ, when did you become so dirty? I just have a surprise for you. Come on," he slowly wraps it over your eyes and you keep a hand on him as he guides you through the house by your waist.
"Okay, one more step... and there," By the feeling of blades of grass making it into your heels, you know you're in the backyard though it feels a bit warmer than it should be in October.
Jamie finally takes the blindfold off and reveals his backyard, though it's decorated with candles all over and a string of fairy lights hanging above you. There are other strings too, and as you look closer, it's photos of the two of you with some writing from Jamie in the corner of them. He gives you time to look around and you pick out some of the pictures.
One was from the first football match of his that you ever attended, with your mismatched gloves and hot chocolate. We had such small hands then.
I knew I loved you in the dairy aisle of the grocery, was written in the corner of a photo Jamie took of you after your failed first date when you two were 15. You had wiped off your make-up but were still in your dress as you sat in the cart.
Annoying bloke, but thank Dani for taking this photo. A more recent one from when you first agreed to be Jamie's girlfriend on the way home from the Man City game. Despite the celebrations, you happened to fall asleep, so the photo has you sleeping and resting your head on Jamie's shoulder with your boyfriend scowling at the camera and cradling your head.
Did you see this coming, love? The photo was taken recently you suspect because it's you with your back to the camera while seated on the couch and Jamie showing off the ring box and sticking his tongue out.
You turn back at Jamie, who looks incredibly pleased with himself but even then, you can still detect the small traces of nerves on his face. You run back to him and plant your lips on his, and he happily reciprocates the kiss.
He pulls back and steadies you, before starting, "Look, you've always been so much smarter than me, so I'm sure you know where this is leading. But please, let me have my big speech, yeah?" You laugh but nod and allow him to go ahead.
"I love you. I'll never get tired of telling you. I never told you how much I wanted to be your friend when you first moved in next door. I thought, this girl seemed so smart and pretty, and she would be a good person to play football with. I was right, but you were so much more, too. You were what anchored me in the world, one of the only people that I was never afraid to be myself with. In the best and worst moments, you were always the first person I wanted to be with."
"Looking back on those memories made me realize there wasn't just a moment where I fell for you because I just always have. You owned my heart before either of us knew it. Even in the hard times when we struggled, when I became a different man and broke your heart, you were still the one in mine. And for all that I put you through, I don't think a million sorry's will ever be enough. But you forgave me anyway and now, I have a chance to spend the rest of my life with you."
"I love you wholeheartedly. I know it's only been a few months, but I can't imagine my life anymore without you. Everyone knew it since we were kids, but the moment I saw you in Nelson Road again, I knew it too. It was always going to be us, (Y/N)."
Jamie lets go of your hands and gets something from his jacket pocket. He kneels down and shows you the ring box. "Now, before I open this, I picked out two rings. You get to pick which one you'll wear, okay?"
You're surprised at this, but you decide to nod anyway. Jamie reveals the first ring, which was inside the box, and it's the first plastic ring he gave all those years ago. You burst out laughing and simply can't believe what he'd done. Only Jamie would pull something like this while proposing.
"So, what do you think?" He pulls it out of its position and holds it up to you.
"I think... this one might be a bit too small for me, Jamie." You point out and Jamie fakes disappointment, before tucking it in his pocket.
"Well then, good thing I'm always prepared." He then pulls out the actual ring. A silver one, with small petals engraved as if to replicate a plant, with the bud of the flower being substituted with the diamond in the middle. It was a small but beautiful cut, and you were always one for the simpler things. It was the perfect ring.
The sound of your full name moves your attention back to Jamie as he prepares himself to say the words he's been practicing in the mirror for the past three months, to you now. "Will you marry me?"
You kneel down in front of him to look him straight in the eye. You cradle his face with your hands before saying, "Jamie Tartt, you are the biggest dork in this world for this. And yes, I will marry you."
Jamie lets out a sigh of relief and smiles, before slipping the ring onto your finger. He immediately kisses you after, cradling your face this time. You two get up again without separating before Jamie separates just to carry you in his arms, bridal style.
He kisses you once again, and says, "I knew I was irresistible to you."
You laugh and roll your eyes, "You were the one on your knees for me."
You lean in to kiss him this time, and after, Jamie rushes back inside the house for you two to celebrate the start of the rest of your life together.

No spoiler personal and honest opinion about Dragon Age the Veilguard
[😀]
Battle is really fun. Even though I love DAO, I’m not typically a fan of tactical combat, and this might be the first DA game where I actually enjoyed the battle.
I like the expanded companion quests. I loved Lucanis' the most.
Semi-realistic comic style works better than I’d expected. The visuals and animations were solid overall, at least for me (still thinking about how Lucanis looked at Rook in that romance scene 👁️👁️). Except for the heavy filters and flashy effects; those were a bit much.
[😐]
Too much repetition. The game recaps constantly, which becomes dull. Like they worried old DA fans won’t remember what just happened a minute ago.
Romance isn’t big compare to previous games. Honestly feels like the weakest romance content of any DA game (well I only remember how much I loved and giggled so much in the old games). Maybe it’s because events in this game unfold so quickly? Just don't expect the same level of content as in DAI. Though, this is just my issue—if you don’t care about romance, it’s fine.
Unfinished story potential. There’s good material here, but it feels half-done. A shame... really.
Choices feel fake. You get three dialogue options, but they’re just slight tone variations of the same line. If you like to playing a jerk in BioWare games, you might be disappointed.
Inconsistent story details. I’m not a lore expert and don’t remember all the characters, but even I noticed some parts didn’t add up well—almost like the writers forgot details from past games too so they just brushed them off. Also removing many choices from earlier games didn’t help; it only made things more questionable.
It’s a fun game that I enjoyed a lot and will replay it just to see Solas again, but do I love it as a DA? I'm not sure.
It’s not about new setting or tone. I was fine with a fresh protag. But now, after finishing this, keeping the Inquisitor as the protag for this end of the Dread Wolf saga would’ve made much more sense to me. I would’ve loved to see the old, ragged Inquisitor raging again like in Trespasser, and give a proper farewell to both the Inquisitor and Solas, whether you swore to save him or not. The writing in this game seems just lacking. In any case, I was just glad to see Solas again and listen to him talking💓 Gareth really nailed it again. The emotion in his voice, I just 😭 I swear Garrus and Solas can send me with their voice alone. Now, I'll just go and sobbing in the corner👍
#i don't usually write reviews but I love Solas and DA so much#and it's been 10 years since DAI so#I just had to get this out of my system#random

i finished the game last night, here are my unpolished thoughts about the final act and what i liked & didn't like. this is very long and probably incoherent lol
what i liked:
the whole final battle was awesome, i loved the combat, and i really enjoyed the huge cutscenes of everyone fighting together. i had been really disappointed earlier about the lack of a battle scene at weisshaupt a la ostagar in origins, and this definitely made up for it
i liked the suicide mission and actually getting to assign people their roles in the battle
i LOVED Solas's betrayal, that whole section in the fade prison with the statues was one of the strongest scenes in the game, i think the entire relationship between Rook and Solas is really well developed. as the player, we know Solas is manipulating them, but i think they did a good job making it so it's still believable for Rook to fall for his tricks, especially with the Blood of Arlathan quest before this. (also it's very obvious Solas is Weekes' favorite, wish they would have just stuck to him and not all that other dogshit...lol)
i liked the idea of Varric's role here, but not the execution. i'll come back to this lmao
the giant dread wolf and archdemon fight was cool as fuck. no notes. that's just classic rule of cool, baby
also i had Davrin in my party while fighting alongside Solas and i really enjoyed his banter with him and how hard he laid into Solas's ass. it was very satisfying. yippee go Davrin!
okay. now. what i didn't like (sorry not going to bother with bullet points, it's going to be longer down here lol):
while i liked the suicide mission structure, i hated how the game all but told you who to assign where. there were no stakes at all, there was no way to get it wrong unless you did so intentionally.
this also brings me to. The Choice. between Davrin and Harding. i understand the need for a "fallen hero" here, it ties into the entire theme of regret with Solas as we see in the fade prison, it was necessary for Rook to be the person "at fault" (aka directly make the choice that ends with someone getting killed) but this choice was dogshit. it also was really fucking stupid to see Harding climb up and stand atop a giant stone pillar, and then NOT use her stone magic!!! i don't hate the idea of someone dying here, but this was just a series of failed choices over and over again. we should not have pitted returning fan fave Harding against the single Black companion (who comes in late and barely even gets his own story outside of his damn pet)-- it should have been Harding (narratively satisfying, she's been here since the beginning and dies for the fight) or Lucanis (he is literally the guy taking the shot), we also shouldn't have tied all the dwarf lore revelations to a character that can just fucking die at the end, and we shouldn't have had her stand on a giant stone pillar when she has STONE MAGIC!! i knew this choice was coming but her death still caught me off guard cus i was fully expecting her to collapse that stone pillar on her, not use her stupid puny bow 😭
i think this choice is also weakened by the fact that it's THEE only choice. it's obviously an echo of the earlier Treviso and Minrathous choice, which also didn't really seem to affect much outside of potentially losing the corresponding factions (and i think Lucanis's romance gets locked out?) i saved Treviso, so i got the Treviso questline later, and i assume that you get a Minrathous specific questline with the Shadow Dragons if you save the other instead (haven't seen myself tho so i'm not sure, just guessing). but it's very easy to recover the Shadow Dragon's reputation, and the final battle takes place in Minrathous no matter what. the only way for companions to die or the battle to fail is to just straight up ignore quests. you can't lose a faction's support at all unless you intentionally try to do so. i don't even think you can lose companions at all unless you intentionally ignore their quests and place them in the wrong spot. though the game still holds your hand through the battle and basically Tells You who to put where so they survive.
and to be fair. this is true for the suicide mission in mass effect 2, but the thing is, there is so much more dialogue and variations with how you can play your character and interact with the companions and the world than there is in veilguard, it makes it feel like you do have more control over your character and the narrative, even if it's just the illusion of choice.
and then with Solas, it doesn't matter, he always ends up trapped/linked to the Fade, it just changes how he feels. (they also do this with the First Warden. i was excited for a potential variation between punching/not punching, but all it changes is his attitude when you find him later in Davrin's quest) okay.... well. is he going to return again after that post credit scene? and are they really going to write 3 (or 4, with lavellan i guess) different branching personality variations?
i think the powers that be just wanted to get rid of him in a way that would still leave the dragon age setting ultimately unaltered and open for more games in the future. especially given the secret post credits scene. which i also have an issue with. we're going to go from "it was all the Evanuris fault" to Actually, it was this secret third thing and everything we did was for nothing! AGAIN! if they want to make more dragon age games, they can just... start a new story. do they know that. (the fact they're implying Loghain was influenced by some outside force to do what he did at ostagar actually has me livid lol. leave origins alone!!!!)
anyways. now the fade prison. i have two issues, my main one being Varric. i actually started to suspect early on something was up with him, because he just sits in that damn infirmary the entire game, no interactions, barely any dialogue. i think Varric was horribly underutilized in this game, and it results in all of the emotional beats around him falling flat for me. of course, it's emotional for ME, the player, because Varric is a fan fave returning character and one of my own personal favorites. as far as i've seen in game, though... Rook has no relationship with him at all. i think this game would have been vastly improved with short playable origins that showed the two meeting and developing a relationship, and also he really really needed to have more scenes and dialogue in general. he's barely in the second half of the game, literally just sitting all by himself in that damn room, and even when he is in the cutscenes he has one single line that everyone obviously just ignores. it sucked. very disappointing finale for a really beloved character... it could have been so good if it was good....
because i DO love the idea of Solas using him to manipulate Rook (and i really like Varric and Solas's relationship & the way they contrast against each other), and also the idea of how being tricked in that way would actually affect Rook-- what's real, what's not, can they even trust what they're seeing at all anymore? especially when Solas "glitches" between Varric and Lucanis (idk if it's always him or your LI? would be cool if it's your LI, that's what i assumed) after slaying Ghilan'nain-- this could have tied in with the final romance scene. but of course the game doesn't get into any of that at all.
and now issue 2. how the fuck did Solas do that LOL. how did he switch places, how did he get out, how did it take Rook in his place when it was designed for elven gods? where are the other elven gods (did i just miss this explanation? did the other two just kill them in there)? 🤷 when did this place suddenly turn into a prison of regrets? was that Solas's presence influencing it, or did he do that intentionally for Rook? dont know! who cares. moving on...
i romanced Lucanis, and i was really disappointed with his romance. the final scene was sweet, but.... i think particularly with Lucanis you can tell so much of his story and arc ended up on the cutting room floor, it feels disjointed and as if we're missing pieces, and you can feel it in his romance, too. i also really didnt understand the "keep flirting (not a lock in) or end it now" choices that didnt feel like they did anything at all. why was i given like 3 different times to break up with him when we weren't even dating yet lmao. the romance was a bummer, of course i love the setting and the story but i go into these games expecting strong romance along with it and i was really banking on that being the highlight in this mess of a game but. alas
this also segues me back into the whole "trapped in the Fade prison" section. why was there no reunion with both your LI and everyone else? apparently Rook was in there for WEEKS!!! they hardly communicate this and Rook just reappears and jumps straight back into leading the team, no tears or questions asked about how they found them, how they got out, what everyone was thinking while they were gone... we also get a deus ex machina knife, how convenient that they did all that while i was gone and no explanation is given as to how it could possibly fool Solas, just trust us bro! 💆 i feel like trying to craft our own copy of the knife should have been something actively happening in the background throughout the entire game, and it gets finished while Rook is in the Fade. but this truly came out of nowhere lol
again i think it's obvious things were cut and rewritten and maybe this was the result of a frantic scramble to come up with something that would work, and i'll be generous and blame it on that, i guess...
when we finally get to the final confrontation with Solas, i was very excited, because again i feel like Rook and Solas's relationship is the best in the game, Solas's writing is consistent and strong, i knew this scene had to be good.... and i guess it was? but it felt so unsatisfying. i chose to fight him (my Rook would do anything to get him to shut up) and i was hoping for. an actual fight. you can do it with Mythal earlier in the game, and we already saw his giant wolf form, i was so excited. and then. no<3
okay! sure. we beat him with the power of friendship (not surprised and not even making fun of it here, it makes sense narratively, i knew some version of this was coming after the whole comparing Rook versus Solas bit in the Fade) but come onnnnn i wanted to fight the giant wolf.... sigh. i did check out the other endings as well, and it's clear the redemption ending is the "true" ending and also the best written one imo.
overall. this was a bad dragon age game. i had a lot of fun playing it though, so it's not a bad game game. the gameplay loop never got boring, i never got tired exploring or doubling back, i loved the maps, i loved the combat, and i did love the companions. but the writing is atrocious and racist. this is a horrible dragon age game. i don't know where i fall on recommending this. again, i've had a lot of fun playing and dissecting it, but i dont know that i could recommend this to dragon age fans. this would have been way more successful as a completely different fantasy game. the changes to the lore, disregarding the majority of the games that came before it, the horrible depictions of returning characters (the inquisitor and isabela were the worst offenders for me) the setting and characters feeling watered down and incomplete, the complete lack of the classic "grey morality" shtick (even if it's not always been implemented well)... idk man. bummer! it's obvious there was a cohesive vision at one point, i do think this game is a casualty of the current state of the gaming industry (i was honestly surprised it was functional on launch. not shade at bioware just in general that is rare to see now) we know EA thrashed bioware throughout development, and bioware made a lot of really bad choices, too (the racism is absolutely their doing, they made that choice back in inquisition). but we can see, particularly in the artbook, that there were good ideas & an intention to actually tie everything together and give this story the finale it deserved... but it all got lost along the way in a very ugly, chaotic development. and the game really suffers for it.
#datv spoilers#datv critical#i mean theres some positives too.. lmao#this isnt really as articulate as my other posts im not really digging in too hard this is just. straight off my dome after playing#i do eventually want to come back to davrin's quest and write about that but i really . don't know what to say. it's Bad lmao#HIS ENDING SLIDE JUST BEING THE GRIFFONS. NOTHING ABOUT HIM. LMAO#anyways. i might give it a day or two before jumping back in with a different playthru to see what i've missed#maybe my opinion on some things will change but. we'll see#obviously this is just my experience with the game#im sure there is lore or potential explanations for some things i may have overlooked or missed. but 🤷#idk if i'll make anymore formal posts at this point i feel like ive said what i have to say#i was possessed but now im free#da posting

What is this?
This is a mod/fangame of HSR fangame Whodrankit? demo by @brynn-lear! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go play it first!!! And after that THEN you can come play this one!
No I mean what is this specifically you know
This mod is a shitpost hypothetical of a scenario where you can agree to Sunday's offer. Included is: 2 endings (Depending if you are nice to customer service people or not lol) ~30k words 7 (joke) endings Bad jokes Bad and disappointing story because I felt obligated to make some sort of plot even though none of it really works but hey I put in all of the jokes I wanted so there's a silver lining at least
How is this connected to the OG WDI? demo?
This is mostly its own thing; the only things that are referenced from WDI itself in this game is the general plot (minus the mystery, bc Idk what any of that shit's about) and well, the assets and stuff. This has absolutely no connection to WDI itself and is NOT canon---Brynn, the OG dev, had no real involvement in the development of this mod beyond making the base game which provided the base assets and original premise this mod is derived from.
Was this the other big project/sunday fic you were talking about
Yes! I started work on this in late June and worked on it on and off for a few months.
why
I wanted to punch Whodrankit?! Sunday and then made this
I come to your for yandere fanfic not shitposts
L bozo
What are the credits?
Credits are in the Readme doc attached to the game zip file; and also follow all of the credits from the OG Whodrankit? plus some more stuff. I acknowledge this game is violating all manner of copyright but I'm already writing fanfic and this'll probably only get 60 notes or something so I'm sure it'll be fine. Pls don't D**A me random big company.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
(BROWSER AND ANDROID VERSION NOW AVALIABLE) I do not plan on making a new WDI? mod; this mod it of itself just spiraled out of control. Though, if there's enough interest, I might release updates for the KFC mod if there is enough interest. Maybe as a Follower Milestone thing or if this gets a decent amount of interaction lol. Still, please do not expect updates or new WDI? mods from me, or request any whatsoever. New WDI? KFC! content will be entirely at my own discretion unless I state otherwise (as mentioned earlier if I choose to make WDI? KFC! related content a follower milestone, for example). But I'm always open to discussing it bc shitposts deserve to be shit on 🔥

SONIC N SHADOW INFORMAL CHARACTER ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION
WARNING this analysis, opinion thing jumps from scene to scene as it's made with the idea you've seen the games and I'm also writing this sort of on the spot so apologies for any typos etc. Also please be nice I'm just some guy.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Sonic and Shadow being so hostile towards each other. Now I'm not referring to their rivalry, because I love it. They're the only people who match each other in almost every aspect, so competition and a little rivalry is welcome and expected. But what I dislike is how nowadays they're not even capable of complimenting one another. Or even getting along in a more casual setting?
Like, in their Tailstube or the line change in SxSG ("You got this, Sonic." -> "On your feet, Sonic.") It feels sort of unnecsesary and disingenuine rewriting genuine hostility between the characters when there wasn't any to begin with.
Sonic and Shadow have always had a competitive push and pull that leaned towards playful from the get go despite the danger both parties presented.
When they meet, Shadow doesn't even seem inherently aggressive like he's depicted to be nowadays. He simply just warps away from Sonic when he comes at him.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1ff036f03cfec0cce135ee8cc663d6e9/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-58/s540x810/e7b5f06d92bbc607804970bfec27ca0597d03b93.jpg)
Shadow at this point just sees himself in higher regard to Sonic and deems him unworthy of his time. This represented by the fact that Shadow is not only positioned to be looming over Sonic, the cinematography having him look down at him and exclaiming once he teleports onto the roof of the building that, "Theres no time for games, farewell."
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/44c81ea2439fc4aa387187c3298e1db5/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-f9/s540x810/70f0dc9b9848d9e338a83ad9011de7e17be2d55f.jpg)
We know that Shadow however quickly changes his tune the more he gets to know Sonoc throughout SA2.
He expresses disappointment in what he assumes to be Sonics death.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e2cb1ad598d53451aaca5bb6414e8185/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-59/s540x810/2a334c9cafb899ca634ae09160e3fddd400476ad.jpg)
This line is so cool and extremely telling of their relationship at this point because it implies that Shadow saw him as MORE than just some hedgehog that resembled him.
Note the "You never cease to suprise me" "So, there's more to you than just looking like me."
(Small note thats kind of off topic) It's interesting to me in a lot of these encounters Sonic is actually the one to START the fight (other than when they battle each other on the ark). This is within reason though since hes being blamed for crimes he did not commit.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bd0df06b2f7cdeba4398619341a47156/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-6c/s540x810/a978b669fb43a712b9fc814656b0f645ef64931a.jpg)
I wish Shadows hostility was toned down some. As he seems pretty amicable all things considering even hes working against Sonic. For example trading quips with Sonic in Adventure 2, doing numerous callbacks to such quips. In the hero story when you fight Shadow on the island as Sonic, he even admits Sonic is an impressive fighter. ( I would take SS but I'll just link a video to the scene)
In fact he gives Sonic credit where credit is due and vice versa numerous times throughout the story, and even the little talk they have before the fight on the Ark Shadow is genuinely curious about Sonic and who he is as a person.
Shadows curiousity surrounding Sonic is something I've always found incredibly interesting about their dynamic. I don't think Shadow would be so no nonsense and dismissive of Sonic, because Sonic intrigues him. Not only due to their similarity in appearance, but how Sonic carries himself as a person.
Not only is this an amazing character moment for Sonic, emphasizing he is not a hero but just a guy who loves adventure. Shadow after this revelation is not aggressive, mean or dismissive. He only fights Sonic because he's in the way, not due to some hatred on Shadows end, just because Sonic was in the way. He treats Rouge similarly.
I also liked the inherent connection the two of them had, like how in Sonic Heroes where Shadow lacks memory of any of SA2, he shows immediate interest in Sonic of all characters.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/68f3dd10a93e49d7feff5deb15c0b425/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-16/s540x810/24b46d1078bfe067b2b1d07bf8844363c1f3b154.jpg)
He's confused about why they look similar, yes, but he still shows immense interest in Sonic and ONLY Sonic even though Tails and Knuckles are also extremely suprised by his return.
I also think it's important to note that, even when Shadow remembers very little of Sonic, they still maintain that playful push and pull dynamic. Shadow never brushes him off, engaging with Sonic and vice versa.
Notice how Shadow isn't insulting, degrading nor putting down Sonic. He isn't so no nonsense as he is protrayed to be nowadays. He plays off of him, going "Is that so...well then, it will be a date to DIE for." Before smirking and running at Sonic.
Maybe I'm simply misunderstanding something, maybe I'm just being oblivious or misinterpreting their scenes, but I feel the removal of Shadows friendliness admist the rivalry and competition makes it feel less compelling because where their dynamic was established to be both parties pushing and pulling each others limits, yet also holding an air of respect and liking to one another feels lost with how most just deem Shadow and Sonic just hating each others guts. What reason does Shadow have for wanting to "finally defeat" Sonic?
Even in games where Shadow a bit more "aggressive" or has a less than friendly dynamic with Sonic (Think Sonic Battle and Shadow 05) theres still an air of respect between them. Sonic actually is the one who continues to push Shadow to take the path thats best for him. Sonic pushes him to be honest about his feelings, that it's okay for him to simply live and feel in the moment. And even when Shadow disagrees with this notion, claiming he has no heart, or Sonic is misunderstanding him, Sonic remains by his side.
That's what I've always loved about Sonic and Shadows relationship. That respect and care for one another I feel is completely lost nowadays to their dynamic. Big moments like Shadow directly stating that the ultimate lifeform is Sonic (I stole this off someone on Twitter I believe. Thank you to that person!) Sonic inspiring Shadow to live just doesn't really exist anymore.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f6e89f83732c70ade12435d284241999/fe10a0a9453ea8c0-6b/s540x810/1722786466e2cc69ba1ba472f8a75e1e08e2af07.jpg)
And even in Sonic 06, the respect and trust the two have remains and is even stronger than before. When explaining where they find themselves to Team Hero, Sonic immediately picks up what Shadow is trying to communicate, that they need to work. Neither parties are apprehensive to one another, Sonic giving a thumbs up and Shadow nodding in approval.
And later when the teams are off on their own, theres the small but to me very memorable interaction where Sonic points right at Shadow and says, "Don't be late." And where I feel in recent titles where Shadow would either ignore him or just brush him off, he gets extremely close to Sonic and goes "Same to you."
And of course the iconic "chaos control" they do together not ONLY being noticably closer than it was with Silver, but they exchange NO WORDS throughout it all and just...know what to do. That is so special to me. That they just know what the other is thinking with no words said. Another moment that supports this is when Shadow comes in to help Sonic and no words are said besides a nod and smile. Would the two really do something like that if they hated one another and had no interest in each other?
I never see their close bond anymore between the two in both canon and fanon content and it's really sad disappointing in my opinion.
It makes Sonic and Shadows dynamic as a whole way less compelling.
The point of this character analysis is to point out how much of what made Shadow and Sonics dynamic actually engaging and have an incredible amount of depth is just...gone nowadays. With them leaning into making Shadow and Sonic rivals, they lost what made that dynamic so special in the first place.
Now I'm not saying I want Sonic and Shadow to be openly really friendly and lose their banter but I wish more moments of care and trust between them was also more common place.
What do you think? Do you think I missed the mark in some of this? Do you prefer their older dynamic or the newer one?
Just to be clear this is not a hate post directed to any of the Sonic Team, this isn't an Ian Flynn hate post this is just me pointing out how I feel about the more modern take on the characters. I really like how Shadow generations handles them but I also feel some line changes in Sonic Generations don't sit well with me personally.
I'm not a big fan of much of the Sonic and Shadow material outside of the games other than the Sonic movies and stories from Sonic channel so I tried to stick to the games primarily when discussing their dynamic.
Please be nice in the replies!!!!!

I've been asking myself these questions regarding totk's story and my deep disappointment in it, because I know a lot of people loved it, I know a lot of people felt it was a better story than botw, and I know a lot of people believe that Zelda games never had good stories to begin with....
But no, I do think the story objectively sucks, is worse than botw's, and could have easily been better. Totk's story is flashier and that's pretty much all it has to offer.
Part of it is its execution, how using the same blueprint as botw (deliberately non linear) was a baffling move when you tried to tell a linear story. You shouldn't be punished for pursuing the story earlier than when the devs planned. You shouldn't be able to spoil yourself the story. You shouldn't be presented with the exact same information 4+ times at points where you're supposed to be rewarded for your efforts. You shouldnt have to slog through a mystery when the game KNOWS you already know the answer. And yet, this happened to an alarmingly large number of people!
So yes, the execution wasn't good.
But the story itself isn't good either. Not only did they decide to cut ties with botw's lore, but they didn't even fully commit to the new lore they introduced.
The zonai civilisation has no substance. We see two (2) of its members and only interact with their ghosts in very, very few instances. During those interactions, we do learn tidbits of this civilisation, but as soon as the tutorial is over, you will never learn anything new from a zonai again. A couple lines during the tutorial is where the bulk of zonai lore happens. The rest is: jumping minigame said to be the same ritual young zonai would do to become adults and the explanation of draconification.
You could maybe say that the mere existence of zonai tech, the mere existence of secret stones, the zonai gear and the ancient hero aspect could be considered zonai lore. But what these things only really add to the lore is that the Zonai 1) were always everywhere and 2) were very powerful. That's pretty much it.
(The ancient hero aspect is especially infuriating to me. It could be a whole post.)
So, not only did they replace the Sheikah by the Zonai for no reason, they didn't even flesh them out enough to be interesting. But they didn't exploit the rest of the story to its fullest either.
- The heart of the story happens in the ancient era, yet we don't see much of it. All the new things we see: the inside of ancient hyrule castle's throne room, a garden and one (1) gazebo in a field. We don't get lore for the dungeons aside from their name, and the ancient sages don't add anything to them either. In general, we don't get lore of the ancient races, not even the hylians or the gerudos.
- Zelda was retconed into being stupid enough not to make the connection between Ganondorf and calamity Ganon. She was also sent back into being a compliant little princess that can't put her foot down when she knows the people around her are making mistakes.
(As an aside, I'm fully of the opinion that Calamity Ganon was a better antagonist than Ganondorf. At least you don't have to fanfic your way into understanding why he wants Hyrule destroyed. He's a magical beast full of hatred, the end.)
- The whole plot is centered around dragons, and yet totk manages to have LESS content surrounding the three dragons of Hyrule than fucking botw.
- Hylia is no relevant anymore. The statues are apparently their own entities? And they have counterparts in the depths with he bargainer statues? Never elaborated on.
The ending cutscene contains a deus ex machina that manages to retcon elements of its OWN story. (Rauru was supposed to be gone after the tutorial. Zelda was supposed to be gone after becoming a dragon.) Realistically, I knew Zelda wouldn't stay a dragon, but I was genuinely shocked at how little of an explanation we get for her return.
And we have 0 impact on her return as a player. Nothing we do matters. She turns back no matter what. Despite many opportunities to make it work in universe.
We could have had something tied with the other dragons, the three sources, to Purah's experiments with time, to the four temples, to Hylia, to the bargainer statues, to the triforce...
But no, just a vague "ghosts that should have disappeared eons ago use their powers to get her back through your arm".
We don't even have an alternate bad ending where this doesn't happen. It will happen, no matter what. For the cinematic shot at the end.
Oh and Link had to get his arm back too. I know they needed their cool parallel of Link catching her hand at the same angle as when he failed to do so at the beginning, but it just all feels so inconsequential as a result.
Everything's solved, everything's good, nothing that happened in this game ever mattered.
