This quote from Goncharov (1973) in relation to soukoku has been haunting me from before I even got to that scene in the anime (the full thing is: Katya- Of course we're in love, that's why I tried to shoot you/ Goncharov- If we really were in love you wouldn't have missed). Violence as a tool for communicating emotions, especially love and hatred, especially love and hatred makes me go feral- how could I not think of the iconic quote that says that katya's miss was a sign of a lack of love/a fake love when chuuya didn't miss? Just... losing it over here.

Idk in my idyllic world the use of ai could improve animation workflow and catapult junior level artists into creative leads roles faster if there's less menial work to be done.

We could have artists still in charge of creative decisions and drawing vis dev while the computer assists with the most labour intensive steps of making shows or movies.

For simpler shows for instance it would be neat I think if you could run your storyboard through a script and have the machine import all relevant assets staged to the best of its abilities instead of manually having to drag props and rigs into your shot and scaling everything before you can even begin to animate (does that tech exist already? Probably).

Like nowadays we already have animation programs where you can set deformer limitations.

i could imagine a possible future where software includes or does subscription services to ai trained on work by artists who got paid to draw or animate template motions or anatomy references. something like generating smart bones could become an automated feature. i can maybe even foresee tech that can look at a character model or design sheet you've drawn and generate a rig for it. in all these scenarios you would have to correct stuff and tune things to your liking, but it gives a considerable head start to the work.

More dynamic shots could be made on smaller budgets if we gave ai props or backgrounds and said "give me this but rotated a little" instead of drawing the same damn chair from 10 angles as a prop artist, I refuse to believe anyone's passion in life is to make prop turnarounds or clean up inbetweens.

what if you had an ai that was trained on drawings of heads at every angle, animals in every angle, a slew of expressions and mouth shapes, then gave it a character ref drawn from a few angles and bam it makes the vtuber rig for you.

this still leaves space for original art and would still require a skilled creative to make something look it's best, that could be a gig. more animators could potentially begin their own smaller studios if cartoons are way easier to make. if anyone could potentially make their own movie in the future, charge people to do it right! no computer can replace a human knowledgeable in film or drawing to guide it in the right direction. without creative people at a production's core, i think the future of ai film is just a very, very, sophisticated version of goanimate than can also do art theft.

this could become the weird futuristic version of "i wrote this children's book can you illustrate it for me?" but instead your mom's friend wants to commission a show pilot they wrote a screenplay for.

When animation was drawn on cels we had entire painting departments whose job it was to paint each individual frame by literal numbers, and it was tedious!! Now we have the paint bucket tool for digital coloring, and software like Toonboom lets you color in one frame then generate the coloring for the proceeding frames. We still have a colour and painting department, it's just different work now. but now we also have people making full color cartoons from their basements because Flash was released for personal computers with said digital tech along with computer generated motion tweening for animation!!

Junior animator and junior bg painter or prop artist roles will probably face an overhaul where more work can be done with less people. But the utopian outcome would be these junior artists can sooner take up lead or supervisor positions where they get to execute their own ideas instead of someone else's. more shows or movies could be produced with less crew for less money, slashing costs when deciding what to greenlight or to take a risk on new talent. The problem is capitalism would make it suck because it only cares about exploiting workers for those cheapest costs possible and forego the necessary human crew required to make the difference between machine-assisted productions and pure ai generated slop

How's it goin' my dedicated pups? The 5th Anniversary celebrations may be over, but in case some of you have been curious, I'll give you a special behind-the-scenes look on the 5th Anniversary group-shot that me and my pet human's sibling @AstralBlocks had worked on together and break down how it all shaped up to the final product!

Let's dive right in, shall we?👀🔍

Here are Astral's sketches of 101DS' background/recurring characters that I drew off of. They basically made them as a base outline for me to use as a reference, and I offered to color each of them separately. Of course, there are several versions where Astral drew a few characters together in one group, with the Royal Corgi family being the prime example. Though not all of them were completely sketched, I was able to the make out the outlines to draw over and color in.

From the refs that Astral had sent me, Astralblocks had done a spectacular job in doing justice to the designs for animals in the show, making sure they reflect 101 Dalmatian Street's charming art-style, including a few like the ducks and the rapping pigeon.

Since not many of the background characters barely had any screentime or speaking role, there were a few instances I gave Astral the creative liberty to pose the characters and expressions the way they see them to give them more dimension and personality based off of their designs. (Taking the three cats from "The Waow of Miaow for example")

There were also several times where some BG characters would come out as inaccurate due to a lack of refs I have given them. With the Afghan hound and the little grey-blue, puzzle patterned pup as a few examples. Despite that though, fixing them up wasn't much of a problem for me!

Speaking of which... Now we go through that characters that didn't make the cut in the final poster. Like the bats from "Dotty Dancing" and the Talent and the gray pup that I mentioned. There were several of them that didn't make the cut due to time constraints and the rush to get it done. Though, with the exception of Mr. Fuzzy's girlfriend Lucy. I had COMPLETELY forgotten to add her to the poster by the time I had finished it. (The one that I did color in)⬇️⬇️

And that's all I have to say about the BG character sketches! All in all, Astralblocks is a true natural in talent when it comes to sketches.

I'm still grateful for them for lending me a paw in working on this project together in time for the show's 5th anniversary! Hope you dedicated pups enjoyed the behind-the-scenes of this poster! Until next time Peace!✌️

oc-tober day 2: new character !! yippee. pretty ironic to be reusing art on this day specifically but i digress. this is my oc john. name picked specifically for how normal it is. his full name is john rider (no middle name but if he had one it'd be thomas bc that'd be really funny to his british friend). John's initial idea was conceived around may of 2023, i believe? as he originates as a non original character from an au. he, in this form, was actually created closer to december of 2023. oh shit he's almost a year old. anyway even funnier is that i have two versions of him pulled from two aus of the same thing. i could've made a different guy for the second one but he would've been a very similar guy. same goes for colin (his british friend/roommates/lover. his head is also in this ref) but i'd like to think colin's been around for longer. since he got his name first lmao

this ref is the same continuity of john and very hard for me to look at due to the white bg. a bit on john is that he has been wearing the same navy colored hoodie (based on a hoodie that i have, actually, though the one i have has anime girl on the back) since highschool. this is because that's funny to me and also it's his comfort item and i personally have a hard time letting go of items i like. he also was given a scarf that i have. this is because i don't know how to design clothing. i'll get into like personality and other shit in a bit

this is the other version of john (from the 60s rather than modern day btw) that focuses a LOT more on his personal struggles. as you can see here, he has a mullet /j that's not what's wrong with him. he smoked during highschool, got throat cancer, got a total laryngectomy (surgical removal of the larynx/voice box) and then got TEP surgery for one of three reasons. reason 1 (meta) i needed him to be able to talk over the phone and to people who don't know ASL. reason #2 he thought he needed to be able to do that. reason #3 parent executive decision. this goes for both timelines though in the modern one i retained it mostly for flavor. here, though, it's uhm yeah it's for the same reason but he's a lot more insecure about it. in both versions he is an anxious, depressed, autistic mess of a man with a stutter. basically the developmental stutter stuck and it was getting better but then he got throat cancer and the trauma at least made it 10x worse and he couldn't be bothered with speech therapy. his voice is also raspy because i can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be. i also like to discolor his fingernails bc of the smoking habits. in the 60s version he has gum with him that he chews on to try and like. satiated the urge to smoke. i don't think nicotine gm was invented YET so it's probably just like regular gum. might take lemon candies as well. i focus more on his alcoholism in the modern version bc in the modern version he basically just replaced one addiction with another.

oh and in the modern version the part of the timeline i'm focusing on is completely different and i didn't even get started on his full backstory. but in the modern version post apartment era (2011-2017) he moved to somewhere else and got a small home with his new beard (she's there to get his parents off his back and also bc she's his bestie from the 60s version and i like her). then he went bankrupt after some time and was homeless for a year or two before ringing up his old roomie colin. anyway that's why he's noted as being underweight in one of the refs. his clothes are very baggy on him and he wears a men's size small.

anyway i could go on nd on for WAY too long about him. i did a lot of research. his salary in the 60's is 5k as a data entry specialist, now data management (which is a new job for the time). and in modern day, he gets the same job bc all his college money was used on surgery. i didn't do the math on that one specifically but it felt about right. my therapist is like "wow you do a lot of research on your characters" and the answer is no not usually it's just these two (second guy being colin btw).

Weekly Update June 28, 2024

Artfight is on Monday and I’m really not as ready as I’d like to be but it’s fine. I have a plan it’ll be fine. I was pretty productive this week, additionally.

So the main issue is I’ve been hit with the overwhelming urge to work on music again even though art stuff is more urgent. That’s fine, I have a plan, basically. The plan is alcohol. I’m gonna have just enough that I won’t be finnicky over the lines, and I’ll try to plow through the last of the assets I need to draw in clip studio. And tomorrow I’ll keep going if I don’t finish it tonight, and then finish up the actual animations. Jack is like 80% done I just need to do the BG, mouth, and like one more movement tween, and then Anastasia will be the last one. I’ve already started on her assets, I don’t expect it to be that difficult because she doesn’t have visible eyes. I’d like to push through the last of the ref sheets that I can update, although that isn’t necessary. I’m going to try anyway because I’m nuts. Then I’ll go through the informational blurbs that I have posted and make sure they’re all up to date.

I did do a good amount of work on music as well, I have fixed my volume issue, and learned how to use a compressor, and dipped into vocaloid again, found a plug-in that I can use on the wav files to make the Zolas growl (because apparently they couldn’t before because they’re V3s. I was wondering why I didn’t really hear much of a growl when I got the wav files back). I also learned that you can just import midi files into vocaloid. Which is going to make everything so much faster. So I will at some point sit down and get a bunch of midi stuff recorded, but that will not be sooner than Monday.

Comic is still coming along slowly but well. It’s around 25.5% done, but I’ve only really been able to do sketches, which will probably continue for a while. I’ll try to sneak in some soon but with Artfight that might be more of a challenge. OEB video is in about the same place as last week, although fwiw I did plan out the unfinished segments a bit better.

I’m really hoping Artfight goes well. I want to unload tomorrow and tonight and then spend all Sunday exercising to feel less like shit then go to bed nice and early. I’ll sketch out attacks while I’m at work, line them at home, and color during lunch, then shade at home. Hoping I can get a good amount done. I want to maybe try more tween animations, or pixel art again, but no promises. I’ll post my link as soon as I’m ready, although I’m sure you could search my blog and scroll for it since I did post it last year.

You saw a ref of her before and as part of the group, we have these "Story Quests" that we have to do. We work with another artist who has a Sailor Animate of their own and complete these story quests. I worked with @protector.of.dreams with her Sailor Black Tourmaline Condor. She's reaching out and I'm reaching towards her. She gave my the crystal BG and I tweaked it around using tools on Medibang.

I procrastinated on her cuz I'm not used to drawing non-FBs (honestly, ask me to do a bust or HB and I'll draw it as big as my sketchbook allows with terrible spatial awareness XD LOL). Do you gave any advice for a still (kinda new) artist?

that is... a loaded question...

work smart not hard is my way to approach art though. and i would have loved if someone would have drilled that into me when i was younger? like... i still strugglewith that. but... it connects to the questions: what do i want to tell? and how can i show it?

defining this is a huge help to me. because some things need a bg to tell the story better. in other moments i don't need it because what i try to say is already told with just a pose or an object.

a bit rough and unperfect lineart is something most people don't look at. a bit a crooked nose or uneaven eyes, in general minor mistakes or crookedness in your art is something people usualy don't tend to see or point out because people look ant the entire picture and composition. (oh... -uncaps red marker- all my mistakes you guys ignore)

so... take shortcuts to achive what you want to tell. if you want to take them of course. don't push yourself because you think you have to. you don't know how something looks you look it up. if there is a free (emphasis on free) pattern use that. or learn how to make brushes for braids and pattern to have an easiertime.

the key for working smart for art are refrences. and to not shy away form them. there are usefull 3D tools in the web for free. you can use fotos to look how angles look like, you can take pictures of yourself.

there is this idea of art having to be hard and difficult in order to be worth something. which is just a stupid point of view. if you use CSP and have these 3D dolls available, use them. there is a reason they are there. use google sketch up as help for environment. if photos don't do it for you. there are many 3D design tools that help visualize what you would like to draw. and there are even artifical drawing rendering tool that can help you with environment.

to struggle through art and forcing yourself through something unpleasant will hurt you mentally on the long run. it kills the joy in the process and at the end can lead to burnouts or just dropping the hobby. (there is a slight difference if it is your job but there are methodes for these scenarios too) so work smart. us the tools that are here to help you visualizing what you want to show us. uhm... finding ref is relative easy but in case you would like to see what i use

[Fanfiction Fanart]- Shard

Ok so...This is for @floralflowerpower of her character Shard from the fanfic Little Lion King (Danny Phantom Phic). Technically this ISN'T fanfiction fanart BUT since the character IS in the story...yeah. (yes im dragonidpyrus shh this is literally a side blog only for art)

So... I had this idea for a while. The pose is inspired of one of the scenes from a anime called Bakugan Battle Brawlers where a character uses some kind of light magical bow so yeah! That's where the idea came from. And then combine that with Sera from YGO DSOD, you get: THIS. Now huge thanks to @anyaprioteasa for the help with adding dynamic to the pose and the bg leaf idea! She's not active on tumblr but thanks regardless. My initial pose which was on paper was a bit stiff and pretty straigh in the middle. And now for the art...so, first of go thank @thesoulspulse and Flora for the ref, otherwise I wouldn't have even draw this. Secondly, I realised Shard has socks AFTER I drew the frikin feet fingers. Never again. Never again. So this was in the works for what? A week or two? Super slow on it too. I just really like the character and design so yeah! Also she reminds me of Sera because of her hair. Speaking of Sera, the theme song for this art is Sera's theme from Duel Links. Even though the song is pretty Egyptian feeling like, I felt like it fits Shard too so I just listened to that while I made the drawing. I think this came out pretty ok, at least I managed to finish one artwork this time. Also the glow around her, I had to get rid of that because it just looked AWFUL :( I was too lazy to line this out again Anyway, hope you like it!

hi! so i’m kinda in deep shit and about to be in half a thousand pounds in debt because of college fees! i can’t go to work because i’m already studying at college and my unholy concoction of mental illnesses and neurodivergency pretty much makes sure that i can only do one Big Thing at a time. i live with my mom and she works but she’s struggling with making bills right now because we got our government benefits taken away due to changes in law in Scotland regarding what people are elegible for (which used to be until it changed and used the money from that to pay for bills and paid for food with my mom’s work money). i have to pay £480 as soon as possible or i’ll get booted from college and even then i’ll still have to pay the fee + last year’s student loan which. i would really rather not get into because that’s like. thousands In other words, my commissions are VERY very open right now!! HEADSHOTS $10 HALFBODY $15 FULLBODY $25 + $5 for fancy shading or simple scene bg + $10 for both! also willing to draw other things/types of art not mentioned here (like ref sheets etc) but it’d have to be on like. a quote basis and i’d have to figure out the price for every case and such! I was wondering who your inspirations are when it comes to art style. I think yours is really soft and cute and I can't stop looking at it lol

Hi!! Wow I didn’t know how to answer this question at first because I draw art style inspiration from a lot of places. I don’t have a who, as to a which movies... It’s no secret I love Disney style so a lot of my inspiration draws from Disney movies.

I love the art in 101 Dalmatians especially. This is my absolute favourite background style.. it’s like sketchy but looks so professional and though through. Just beautiful. I despise drawing bgs but if I ever do them I’d like to reach a similar sketchy style.

I also love the weight they have in that middle picture, this is exaggerated because they’re wet, but pulling details of your characters down like clothes makes everything look super cute. You’re telling your viewer that this character is so tiny and Smol that something that normally doesn’t weight a lot like clothes is pulling them down. It makes them look smaller and younger. I used this for Patton’s sweater paws. Also The blanket on top of Janus’ head. Using props to make things look cuter is very helpful.

I love adding tiny things to my style from other art styles... like the way the puppy’s lower jaw is drawn, note how there’s a line that separates it from the main head shape. It’s friggin adorable... Now go and take a look at that snake plushie on my comic. 🙃 I didn’t make that up, I’m grabbing things I like from the masters and adapting them to my own style.

Cats don’t dance has a wonderful fluidity to their style that I wish to achieve in all my poses no matter how insignificant or unimportant to panel they might be, i try to make them fun like cats don’t dance, that way I kind of trick myself into having fun with them too. Just ahhh.. Their expressions follow their face structure and are fun and dynamic, I sometimes try to exagerate the eye sizes and distort them a bit to match the direction they’re looking to get a more cartoony look. I usually have a reference open too, just for good measure. Also look at her sleeves, they’re so puffy and look cozy and comfy. Go check out Virgil’s hoodie and you’ll probably find something similar.

I don’t need to mention sword in the stone or the iron giant cuz you all have picked onto that, but yes I draw inspiration from their styles as well, sword in the stone has wonderful child proportions that I love and Arthur’s profile is great for learning purposes. Notice how his eyes are placed in the middle of the head, no towards the top? The lower you place the eyeline the younger they will look. Just careful not to push it too hard unless you want a super cartoony look. Also if you put them in situations and places where you empathize how short they are, maybe by giving them a huge piece of clothing... they will also look cuter. If you make them look like they can’t reach somewhere, to the point where only their eyes visible because they can’t reach... that’s going to make them look even smaller. Increasing the cuteness factor. If you squish them they will look soft and round and plushie like.

Draw refence from sources you like, they don’t have to be animated, use real life for ref, or paintings or maybe 3D or stop motion. Don’t be afraid to look at what other artists are doing. See the way they’re simplifying features, or the type of lines they use, maybe they’re all round, or maybe more geometrical. I’m not saying copy 100 percent of what they’re doing. That’s honestly no fun. But the combination of little things from different sources will make your art unique to you. Eventually every feature you borrow from somewhere else will slowly evolve into your own adaptation, that is inevitable. None of us is ever going to have a 100 percent original style, it’s the combination of things you like, your interpretation that’s gonna make your art unique.
