As someone who speaks some French but with a very North American accent (Cajun-ish, as I learned from a Cajun relative at first), when I actually went to France my accent seemed to annoy actual French people. (Which I at first found frustrating but now just find amusing because might as well be proud of it!)
I am now imagining that happening between Lucifer and Alastor and it delights me.

I have to say, as a french person, I couldn’t help but distrust you since you had the fleur de lys in pfp, french people who have it on social media’s always turn out to be some far right nationalists 90% of the time, but it doesn’t seem to be your case. I can’t tell if your hatred of “Anglos” is ironic or real, but you’re certainly an intriguing person. You do know generalisations are useless tho, right ?
I’ve heard about that use of the fleur-de-lis in France from several sources, but my question there always is - what about Québec? The metropolitan French are at least aware of Québec; it’s a popular tourist destination, and you like to mock their accent and their quaint sacres and their resistance to English loanwords (and probably their food...is poutine really the best they can do up there?). This is their official flag:
Tumblr media
Has no one in France ever seen that before? The fleur-de-lis has been used by French people in Canada and the US for as long or longer than those countries have existed as an ethnic identifier, which is rather important when we’re minorities in Anglo-dominated nations largely settled in two large enclaves. It’s not a political symbol for us; it just means “hey, there’s French people here.” I did a post a long time ago showing off some of the many ways in which fleur-de-lis iconography gets used in Louisiana as an instantly recognizable piece of local color, and I assume it’s similarly deployed up in Québec and elsewhere in Francophone Canada. I wonder if it’s because people think at first that I live in France? My blog description places me firmly in New Orleans...but then as it appears that the rest of the French/Francophone world frequently forgets that Louisiana exists perhaps that doesn’t register?
Also, that part about being minorities in Anglo-dominated nations is significant. I’m sure that you at least enjoy some degree of riffing on the English people, whether that’s over football or their crappy food or Brexit or whatever; varying levels of antagonism between France and England have been a reality since the medieval period, and I don’t think that’s going to ever fully cease despite the EU and English becoming an internationally trendy language for some inexplicable reason. I’ve certainly been exposed to a fair share of casual anti-French sentiment among Anglos - and that would be US Anglos in this case, who nominally make a big deal of their debt to France in helping them win their revolution against England - so it’s only fair to respond in kind.
More seriously however, you have a nice channel separating you from England, and apart from obnoxious English-speaking tourists in Paris (who deserve all the vitriol directed at them) I imagine you don’t have to interact with Anglos very often. Think of, instead, every stereotype you have of Americans...and then imagine that you have to live next to those people. There are far more of them than there are of you, and they claim your food and your festivals and all the other superficial elements of your culture as their own solely because they live in proximity to you. Imagine also that not only do you know English, you know only English because several generations of your family lived through decades where French was pushed to the fringes of political, professional, and social relevance until it was eliminated entirely and there was no longer any point in teaching French children how to speak their own language, or any resources to do so for that matter. You have minimal input in the governance of your own city and even less in that of the state that began life as a thriving French colony, and French people in other parts of the world never acknowledge you because they assume you’ve all died or been assimilated and in fact believe you to be indistinguishable from your American neighbors.
Is it any wonder then that the Louisianais, or at least the ones who haven’t given up and assimilated, are more open about our resentment and hostility toward Anglos? That we fall back on insulting generalizations as we ourselves are generalized and turned into flamboyant literary figures: the incomprehensible, trigger-happy swamp rat Cajun, the cruel and tragically hedonistic white Créole who might also be a vampire, the doubly resentful, voodoo-practicing mixed Créole? Surely the Anglos and their sycophants can take a little of that in return.
