technically pokemon review: best / worst green shinies? though i don't know if anywhere sorts shinies by colour so. it's just the meme

(Note: I am not mentioning every single green shiny here because there's like 50+ of them, so don't freak out if your fav isn't mentioned.)

Best:

Rowlet: Grass-types always look good in green, but it works particularly well with Rowlet because there wasn't an abundance of green in the original design, making it a fairly obvious high-contrast shiny. The green color they choose has subtle blue tones to it that gives it a pleasant, almost minty look, and they adjusted the green and orange accents to better compliment this shade instead of just leaving them as-is. (Shoutout to Vileplume and Venusaur, who follow the same concept and just aren't being mentioned for redundancy.)

Lileep: Here's a tip—because blue is an analogous color to green, you can color shift basically any blue Pokemon to green with some degree of success (Poliwrath is a good example of this). Lileep is unusual though because the color shift is actually happening with purple rather than blue. It works, though—the green compliments the yellow well and the color feels natural for its typing. They also shifted the petal color over to be more yellow to match the green base, seeing as the original's pink matched the purple.

Applin: No, a Pokemon doesn't have to be a grass-type to make a green shiny look good (Masquerain is a good example), but they seem to pull it off really well—probably because the color choice feels like it could've been the original color, instead of it "feeling" like a recolor. This is especially true for Applin, which swaps the standard red out for a classic green apple. The shift is pretty straightforward, but making the green at the top darker instead of lighter to make sure there's enough contrast between the green of the eyes and the body is a well thought-out touch.

Worst:

Larvitar: This might be a controversial hot take(TM), but I will always take a bold shiny, even one that's objectively ugly or an ill-fitting color choice, over one that's subtle and boring. Say what you will about Dragonite or Espeon, but at least they feel like you have a special Pokemon when you catch them. Larvitar here is just... really boring. And even if you put that aside, the darker green lowers the contrast between it in the red, making the colors look muddied. Tyrannitar makes the very logical choice to just swap the green out for brown; why Larvitar didn't just do the same is beyond me.

Pokemon Mini Headcanons

Realized it's been a solid minute since I've shared anything. so! here's some pokemon headcanon tidbits that have kinda been floating around in my head but I don't have anywhere to put them yet:

Barry is extremely tall. Like, at least six feet. Since he's very visibly the goofy type, it's not super intimidating until suddenly he's barreling down the street and nearly knocking people over in his wake. He's also incredibly clumsy, so it's kind of a bull(tauros?)-in-a-china-shop situation.

Leaf is part of the team that revolutionized and maintains the PSS (not part of the original team though, she's too young for that), which is of course led by Bill. Where Bill came up with the, made the team, and did a bunch of hardware stuff, Leaf is in charge of software stuff and does coding for the different programs. As for the rest of the team. well. I don't know who they are bc I haven't gotten that far.

Also, Red's sign name for Leaf is Green, as in, literally the sign for the color (the same goes for Blue). Blue's often calls her Greenie as a result.

As Hoenn's Champion, Brendan is considered a very down-to-earth and blunt person, which is great and all until you remember he's from the ✨️bearimba pokeverse✨️'s equivalent of Florida and is basically Reigning Florida Man Supreme. He's definitely done some crazy stuff but it kinda gets shoved on the back burner (that definitely isn't partially because the media pushes his more serious side in order to fight the "all Hoennians are unhinged" allegations).

Lucas is legally deaf (deaf but not Deaf, he lost his hearing as a kid) and uses hearing aids. He can kinda sorta understand people without them, but it's less like he understands the words and more like he understands the sounds that are supposed to be word, so it's way more convenient to keep them in. Whenever he doesn't want to deal with Dawn's and Barry's shenanigans, he just turns them off, closes his eyes, and relishes in the relative peace and quiet.

He's also the one who gets transported back to Hisui during the final battle with Dialga/Palkia/Giratina. Long story short (bearimba DPPt/PLA rewrite when?), his hearing aids get destroyed in the process of getting transported and he's forced to go through the events of PLA at a huge disadvantage, mostly relying on his quick wit and vast knowledge of pokemon to survive the game.

Lorelei, Karen, and Clair are all besties, and they meet up regularly to have brunch and share the latest gossip (aka pooling together their resources to gather info on their enemies, discuss the most recent affairs in Kanto/Johto, and more, all under the guise of "girls' time").

Silver and Janine first meet when Silver gets accidentally caught up in a prank meant for the E4, for which Janine very vehemently apologizes (under threat from Koga) and Silver reluctantly forgives her (under threat from Lance). They get along surprisingly well after that, especially after they both get involved in the Kanto League as gym leaders, and they eventually become pretty good friends.

Team Rocket was kinda just a shady family business until Giovanni took over in his twenties. In the 30ish years he presided over the it, he managed to develop it into a massive, multi-level and multi-department organization with their fingers in just about every aspects of the Kanto economy before their collapse. (all things considered, it's kinda funny/pathetic how things ended---he had all this power, then just threw all that and his kid out the window because some teenager happened to beat him in a pokemon battle)

Indigo Plateau (the actual plateau itself, not the League building) is pretty unique in that it's literally a plateau in the middle of a bunch of mountains. which. isn't really how geography works. Story goes, it was originally a mountain that served as the battleground for a pair of ridiculously overpowered trainers, and it got leveled in the middle of all the fighting. In honor of the plateau's legend, there was a regularly held tournament for pokemon trainers to decide who was the best of the best in the region. Eventually, some guy decided to make it an "official" event, and that's how the Pokemon League got its start before it spread and became an international organization!

Good game and good fight everyone! This is another compilation of all the artworks I've made since my Midweek Post + Artist commentary. A significant less amount than last time because I got hit with that Burnout Special soon after. Speaking of that, everyone give a Huge Thank you to @mouwuma for doing the lineart and coloring of my sona!! (I owe them bigtime b/c I was NOT drawing that complicated ass outfit for a third time). Please give them some love or financial compensation! Without further ado, let finish this!

@twidaisi I had to get Twi back for that attack of Compact!! So I decided to do the character that was on my bookmarks as revenge!! I went a different route on him than I usually do (The neckless style again) because I thought it would fit his build better than if I did give him a neck. It was fun doing this cartoony lad who totally isn't committing fraud and medical malpractice!! (That license is totally valid I swear)

@goatpaste I always loved loved loved Sammi's fan JJBA part with Holly and just have been a big fan of his in general, so when I realized he was on AF I knew I had to draw at least one of them!! I picked Roxanne because she is just so pretty and her lore is just really really neat! Fun fact, I sneaked in a I.M.P at the last minute because the top half of the canvas was feeling empty and then remembered stands can partially show themselves. Overall a lovely design so such a neat character!

@salezmanradioz Polyblank was actually in my bookmarks since the beginning of AF! I ended up seeing them right before it started and saved it until now. This also another character that I read into the lore for him and god it's really really intriguing! I had to hold myself back from putting more people into this one because I had other things I needed to do. Polyblank is such a lad and I liked doing their face + colored lineart. (P.S Check out this character playlist it's BANGIN)

@lovelandfrogofficial A little backstory here, once I logged back into AF after posing the Midweek Roundup I found myself hit with four attacks!! Two revenges and two surprises! Cryptid's being one of the surprises, so I felt like I had to give some art in return. I picked out Valentine because he had very few attacks and I had an idea from reading his character desc (A kid like him would definitely dramatically pose inside of a coffin). It was an experience doing the lace and adding the roses (Which was actually a last minute decision, thank godness it turned out so well) but overall I like the look of this one!

SunshineCo225 Their attack of Underscore was my second surprise attack of this year, so I chose Elie of Dicey Dungeons to revenge with! I actually do quite enjoy DD so I went with a location I personally liked from it, which was the library stage. It ended up working out well since Elie's greens and yellows give a wonderful contrast to the reds and blues. I gave her a hammer since her daggers can transform into other weapons which is really cool :>. Honestly the contrast, pose and lighting makes this attack my favorite out of this batch.

@prizebubble A friend of mine attacked one of Nep2ne's charaters, which inspired me to do one of my own as well. A double whammy if you will! The idea behind this one is Kit ripping through AF to cause chaos so this one is transparent. It was lovely doing the patterns and stitching on Kit, it was like I was decorating her myself! Overall just a nice quick one with such a rambunctious looking character.

@mouwuma Me going "Oh I can't participate in AF this year" and then hitting you with an attack should be tradition at this point, it's happened like twice now. Anyway, this one is a Double Whammy of Dop & Ninian, they come from completely separate universes but Dop is a gigantic, pretentious nerd. And I thought it would be funny for them to be rambling about Ninian, a Pokemon fan character of theirs, and make up a fake amiibo pose for him. I felt like I had to do one for how much I pestered you to put Dop on AF so here it is!! (Fun Fact, Pokemon doesn't have an official amiibo line like Mario does. All the Pokemon amiibos are exclusively for the Smash Bros line. Nintendo is losing out big time here.)

@skittisketch My final attack of the year! This one almost didn't get made at all (So thank Jesse next time you talk to him). The ref described Skitti as a "wandering artist" so I thought her walking around a park for inspiration would fit her nicely. I could've simplified the background but god dammit I had sketched it already I had to go all in! (Even if I was on a bit of a time crunch). Overall a good work to finish of this year's Art Fight with!

Honest to god I didn't even expect myself to get out as many attacks as I did for this second half. So I'm quite proud of myself for that one! This was an ArtFight of trials and tribulations, but I finished this year off with 862.75 points! Thank you to everyone who gave me art this year and one more Thank you to mouwuma for doing the art for me (And for being such a good friend!)

25 years ago, very close to this day, a storm was brewing in my sleepy little town. A friend with a cool geeky older sister that introduced me to Sailor Moon had tuned me into a cool new Game Boy game last school term. One we played a lot over a Summer he was over at my place a lot. It didn't seem like much in the haze of N64 classics and I don't actually think I knew many people with a Game Boy around that time. When we started Third Grade though...Pokemania was in full bloom. I've been playing a bit lately and it made me nostalgic. Let's have fun with it, especially with the jittery OP schedule.

I love that I've gotten to be here for the full phenomenon. Like I said, the wave reached US shores when I was in 2nd grade but by the end of that year only a few of us knew about it and it seems like most kids discovered the show or the games over the Summer. The card game dropped around this point too, I remember it being around my September birthday. That shit was wild, but I understand why people thought it'd be a passing fad. Because I remember 2nd grade being really big on quickly passing toy fads. The games though. Yeah yeah, the early designs were iconic but the game was clearly unpolished compared to later releases...

That general wisdom is fair. But you know what I like about weird, pieced together with duct tape code of straight Red/Blue? The grit. Pokemon was still originally made in the 90s and it shows here, before it was a childhood mainstay attracting a lot of scrutiny. Because this was just some random Game Boy RPG at the time. So Kanto gets to have a little more edge to it. Not with world-shaking stakes, just because of standards. It never felt weird to have the gambling hall as a spotlight locale, genetic engineering gone wrong plots are one of those things that were big in the 90s but forgotten after. Team Rocket actually feels kinda like a gang, trainer types that don't fly today...also I still can never get over this one explicitly taking place in our world.

That last part is a big one to me. I'm not some old head who hates anything after Kanto. But there was a certain verisimilitude to it that was still there for Johto but just isn't there at all by now. One little thing Kanto does better than others is how there's usually a better logic to why the trainer types you see are on the routes they are. You can really see the Dragon Quest influence if you're a big fan of those like me, later gens primary influence is other Pokemon games. Is it simple today going back? Yeah. If you jumped on later just play the remakes. Fire Red/Leaf Green are great. But like any major series, there were certain elements here that did not continue with it. I'm always fascinated by those, and for Red/Blue to me it's that these games did not have quite the kiddy tone the franchise has a reputation for.

Well my session has ended with the first day so-

Red- Hm, intelligent jock. An interesting combination but warranted given his desired goal in life. I also like that his responses are fairly in character no matter what you choose. Sometimes with Persona protagonists, it can feel like they're forced to do contradictory things through their dialogue choices. I get that's because, as Wild Cards, they're meant to be able to mesh with multiple extreme and confliciting personalities but it's good to have that firmness of character.

Blue Balls- Asshole. Though, given what he said about Oak and my knowledge of Pokemon fan works...he has family issues with his grandpa, doesn't he?

Green-You know, aside from trying to stuff Red into a women's bathroom: she's kind of my type. A bit sassy and fun loving.

Ethan-...This man's role is gonna be the Richie to Red's Ash, isn't he?

Brendan- This man is a himbo, isn't he?

May-Super cute, though a bit annoyed at treating a guy's confession so...cheaply with a coin toss then getting annoyed at him telling the story.

Calem- Oh, so he's the 'socially conscious' type, isn't he? Which must make it a shock to see Serena not

Serena-...Uh...she's really pretty? Doesn't really mean much with this cast though

Hilbert-...Kind of weird having him be this disgruntled brooding guy who actually cares about people...when we got Silver around. Especially with his type focus. Still, jesus fuck he slammed those guards harder than an Amplifier-boosted STAB Boomburst.

Roxanne- Jesus lady, leave Brawly alone.

Brawly- Though man, you do not do yourself any favors.

Silver- Daw, he's so cute.

Misty- Hm, a self aware tsundere girl? That's an interesting take to give her.

Cherem-Buddy, you need some strong ass Devil's Grass to unwind, don't you?

Sabrina- You exist. Okay.

Flannery- Oh I am aiming for her.

Whitney-Hm. You know, Whitney's one of the few Pokemon characters noted to be rather attractive. In fact, I think she's the second with Erika being the first with that old guy in Gen 1. Given how no female characters in this game so far can be consider even 'generically pretty'- I wonder how you're gonna communicate that.

Wally- Holy shit, Wally's here.

I have a lot of "non-canon" memories. And, being the only fictive from my source in the system so far, I'm very worried about what will happen if/when someone else from my introjects. I don't know if they'll remember things like I do. What if my nepher arrives and he doesn't remember me being his uncle because it isn't actually canon in the source? What if my childhood friend arrives and doesn't remember us being childhood friends?

But, there's problems either way. What if NO ONE else from my source ever comes here? What if I'm alone forever here? What if I'm stuck here, waiting for what happens to them the next time my source updates? I can't live like that, I just can't.

I've been considering trying to just will one of them into existence here but I don't want to be in the resulting potential power dynamic. I just have to keep waiting for something to happen. It's painful.

I probably have more to say that I forgot, but I'm too tired to actually structure this and say everything I want to. Having said that, I'm sorry if this is a difficult read.

Honestly we have willed a lot of our members into existence for this reason. There's different factors of course and we can't tell you what is or isn't a good idea for your system, but power imbalances are definitely able to be minimized.

What are your expectations from them? If it's anything beyond simply their presence, then you'll need to work on lessening those expectations until you know what it is they want.

Make sure that you have headmates who are able to side with them if they feel upset, unsafe, or need to set boundaries.

As long as you're doing things like this and the person you want to form seem safe for the system and a good fit for it, then you're not hurting anyone and it can actually help quite a bit.

I would also offer the comfort that most (not all but most) of the time when you get fictives from the same source in the same system their exomemories will line up. It's not guaranteed but it's incredibly likely, so don't worry to much about it.

Shadow Triad AU !!!

So, basically it's set after pokemon BW / during my version of pokemon BW2 (from a rp we're having my partner and I), they didn't helped Ghetsis escape and all went their separate way, I used the RGB color scheme because I used to like the theory that they were the gym leaders from Striaton City, they are not them tho, their names (new names) are Gin (blue) Absinthe (green) and Syrah (red), yes, all named after alcohols because why not. They also all have a link to music, I imagine Ghetsis to love music and practice instruments and he would probably want the Shadow Triad and Anthea&Concordia to practice something as well even if it has nothing to do with their duties soooo yeah ...

Gin founded an hard rock band, he's trying to enjoy life after being basically ordered around all his life, he has a tough and no-nonsense demeanour but he's actually pretty caring and nice, he's still relatively in touch with both of his brothers even if Sirah isn't the most responsive, he meets everyone and then with Absinthe and currently has a crush on a fellow band member, he's the drummer of the group.

Absinthe is an escort, both from necessity but also by choice, he craves intimacy and contact, having been deprived of it for so long, he's happy with his job most of the time, but it only really fills that hole (haha) so much, here comes his hobby, clubbing, he likes to meet new people but also too watch over those who may have drinked a lil but too much (by preventing creeps from drugging people's drinks, he doesn't drink or take drugs himself but want people to be able to enjoy those in a safe and healthy way, he love synth and his currently in rocky terms with Syrah.

Syrah currently works in a battle facility for three french mega-evolution specialists (who are in a polycule), he's kind of pompous and still hold some values Ghetsis teached him dear but doesn't bail him out of jail as he thinks the best way to respect Ghetsis is by just living his life, making money and living surrounded by luxury, he likes to play the violin

Aaaaand their teams, Gin is a Steel/Dark type trainer and kept two of his old pokemons, Absinthe is a Ghost/Poison type trainer and kept his Banette, Syrah is a Dragon/Fairy type trainer and most of his pokemons are new and were offered by his employers

*I actually am almost done writing a F/F ship fic right now, but, as with a lot of my other ships, I find it's not a very popular one and I wanna talk about yuri for a hot second.

(The main reason I specifically want F/F ships to write is because I find I just don't end up shipping them as often in the specific fandoms I actually make content for. This is because (despite everything) I mostly do stay in region for Pokemon ships, and there are usually only one to two main female characters per region in the various mangas I like, and I don't always ship them. There isn't really this problem with male characters because there are more of them. This can also be reflected in almost all of my other main fandoms, but I kept this to Pokemon for my own sake. qwq)

Honestly I ship Yellow with everyone is Kanto super hard Jadeshipping is just a favorite.

Green convinced Yellow to dress as a boy to go after Red and Yellow did it. A lot to unpack there in so many directions but it is something I like.

I'm so sorry I am a Straight!Daisy truther because I ship Teashipping so hard and I have to leave at least one character straight or all of them are queer (lmao), but I am also a multishipper and oh boy they just have so much going on.

This feels like a good angst potential ship, especially if you leave Courtney dead at the end of RS, but even if you don't, there is a lot of "I left my friend behind," "I miss her," "maybe I shouldn't be with Bill," that you can play with.

Or it could be about them being happy and doing contests together and helping them I can like two things. <3

I feel like they have the strongest argument for a fic existing, I just haven't made one yet.

They are so underrated for how awesome that little panel is. I love you Daisy Oak cameo in the Ruby Sapphire arch, it meant everything to me.

Another note: There are also a bunch of other F/F ships in Pokemon that I like a lot. I am a multishipper after all. These are just some of the ones that I actually think I could be capable of writing in a satisfactory way. qwq Like, I ENJOY Jessie and Cassidy from the anime, but I don't really have anything to say about them exactly. I LOVE DPA x Pokespe ships, but I don't know where to START with that, let alone where to go in a fic. Crystal and Green is a favorite of mine in headcanon land, but Crystal personally irritates me in a lot of her appearances in the actual series and I thus struggle to write her in fic, I really do like White x Whitwo, but I'm already writing an F/F ship with Whitwo and I struggle enough with writing her already without doing two back to back. White also similarily irritates me sometimes. Jupiter and Mitsumi are super duper fun, but I don't really have anything I want to write about them in particular, even though they have good angst potential. Platinum and Cadance and the fighting one have a really cool dynamic but I am NOT good at writing poly ships, sadly. I love Y x that-one-bully-lady-I-forgot-the-name-of, but if it wasn't clear enough by my telling of the ship I don't remember enough about that specific arch of Pokespe to actually do anything. Such is life unfortunately. 🤷‍♀️

pokespe reread: red, green & blue chapter - closing thoughts! 🔴🟢🔵

im gonna do these for each chapter before i move onto the next one :D which means its time for RGB closing thoughts before i head onto yellow! i dont have as much to say as i did about ruby & sapphire, but that's just cuz there isn't any poorly handled parental abuse or gender nonconformity i feel the need to ramble about for 5 billion years LOL

anyways, thoughts under the cut!

(before i say anything, reminder that i call the boy green and the girl blue 👍)

ok first off, i wanna talk about just how cool the way team rocket is portrayed here. like i sort of take it for granted since ive been into pokespe for so long, but the thing of a lot of the gym leaders being a part of team rocket is SOOOOO cool.

not only does that by itself raise the stakes a lot compared to other depictions, but also these guys are RUTHLESS. like they have no qualms about straight up killing these kids and that makes every scene they're involved in so much more intense. like the scene where red and green are fighting against koga and he keeps forcing them to back down by threatening to literally DECAPITATE the other? that shit was genuinely so tense, it was really well done.

outside of the involvement of the gym leaders, they also do a really good job at making everything feel interconnected. like almost every conflict that isnt interpersonal can be traced back to team rocket, and even stuff that seems trivial at first, like collecting the gym badges, ends up having a greater significance. i did not remember that giovanni left red and green alone so they could collect the gym badges for them, that actually shocked me. really well done

moving onto specific characters, i just wanna talk about how much i love red rq bcuz i have an even deeper appreciation for him after this reread 😭 like he's just so pure hearted and cares about pokemon so much, and i really love how THAT'S what makes him strong.

like obviously that's a classic pokemon narrative at this point, but this was back in the days of the first game! yknow the one where trainers had whips and the bonds with your pokemon WASNT heavily emphasized? i just think it's cool that alongside his skills as a trainer, red's main heroic trait is his EMPATHY above all else. not trying to give too much credit here but i do think that's really cool, having the main male protagonist's strength come from his empathy and love.

and the way that that influences OTHERS to become better is something that i really love too. blaine talking about how seeing red's love for pokemon is what made him leave team rocket actually almost made me tear up :') and of course green also learns to treat his pokemon better because of red, which is something that i really really love (more on that in a second)

i also just wanna note how much i love red and poli :D the reoccurring thing with red being saved from drowning by it was really really sweet

moving onto green, i was surprised at how much... less of an asshole he was than i remembered? like dont get me wrong, he's definitely got a few moments where he's nasty to red for no reason in the beginning. but overall he's really moreso just Prickly, rather than being outwardly antagonistic. most of the time he's just brushing red off and underestimating him, rather than straight-up insulting him

this also plays into the fact that i realized upon this reread green very much reads as autistic to me. he's silent a lot of the time, focused on stats over feelings, and doesnt even attempt to mask when he doesnt like someone or something. he's very upfront with how he feels which comes across as cold/mean (and im not saying that's NOT what it is, but a lot of the time i think he's just reacting honestly without necessarily meaning to be rude. tho since he doesnt rlly like red and thats who he's usually interacting with, most of the time it IS probably meant to be rude lol)

also there's instances of him not rlly getting social cues/sarcasm. like literally this moment i put above, red goes "back to your old obnoxious self i see!" but green doesnt seem to even register that as a jab and just goes "that's right" like bro hes making fun of you 😭

but anyways yes, green was not as actively mean as i remembered him being, and him and red actually start to get along far quicker than i recalled as well! i thought that their enemies/rivals to friends dynamic was very well done, and i think this is best shown in the championship match, which was for sure one of my favorite moments of the whole arc

^ LIKE. OH MY GOD. the way that red and green have both learned from each other and grown bcuz of it by the end of the story. the way they've grown to respect each other and know each other so well. "they've incorporated the best traits of the other into themselves... and they know each other like the back of their own hands!" simon infizero found dead on the floor

i also liked how much the two smiled during the match :) they're having fun! they enjoy battling against each other!! i already talked about this in a separate post but this is a VERY different championship match than the one that occurs between these two in gameverse. and that's ok! even if i find gameverse's version more compelling, both are good and serve different purposes.

gameverse green's character development is jumpstarted BY losing the championship, while here pokespe green has ALREADY undergone character development and this match is used as a vessel for showing that development off. and i really really like it :D

now uh. for something about this climax that i DIDNT like

bro what the fuck was this 😭 professor oak intentionally triggering blue and airing out her trauma in front of thousands in order to "get back" at her for stealing squirtle was really fucking weird and strangely cruel. like listen man ive experienced many different interpretations of oak over the years some good, some very bad, most of them complicated, but even at his worst he would not fucking do this 😭 at least not in my opinion

i really wish that him confronting blue for stealing her starter and giving her the pokedex was under better circumstances..... like imo if they wanted to do this scene with all that and blue talking about her past, they could've easily just. had oak directly confront her about it. if we need to get blue broken down enough to talk about it, then have him start beating her in the battle really badly until she gets mad about it!

or hell, if that wouldnt be enough, have him confront her, she wont open up, so THEN he pulls out the spearow as sort of a last resort. she gets scared and rather than being all weirdly smug like "haha stupid traumatized girl i knew it was you" (ew) have him be GENTLE. have him be like "i know what you've been through blue. i was part of the team that tried to search for you etc etc. all i want is to know why you stole my squirtle" and then she breaks down and goes on her whole spiel.

that would be sooooo much better than what actually happened, and it would make the scene where he finally gives her her own pokedex and she breaks down into tears thanking him feel SO much more earned and actually impactful, rather than just feeling weird. this moment just felt so weirdly cruel and out of character for oak for no reason. and it sucks bcuz i DO like blue's breakdown about how she's from pallet too and wanted to go on her own journey, but the way we get there is just so weird that i cant fully appreciate it.

ok lastly just quick thing, i love how mewtwo is portrayed here :') it's how it should be portrayed!! it's not evil, it's just been through a lot and has a very understandable hatred for humans due to that. i love how red didnt even hesitate in immediately being empathetic to mewtwo and encouraging blaine to show mewtwo kindness and help it have a better life. made me very happy I LOVE YOU MEWTWO

and that's about it!! overall, i really love this first arc. it's definitely a little wacky when it comes to certain worldbuilding stuff, but that's to be expected from something made in the franchise's infancy. u could just do whatever u wanted back then man. and it doesnt even bother me cuz i mean. stuff like the legendary birds fusing into one pokemon is objectively cool as fuck

this arc is really well written when it comes to the overarching threat of team rocket, the characters and their development, everything! truly a delightful read :]

Oh, what's this? It looks like Renee has become a Mismagius and has taken advantage of her newfound power in a rather interesting way! She seems to have found some attractive-looking gentlemen and has invited them to stay with her in this bizarre mansion with her...permanently! I'm sure they're totally cool with it, the expressions and poses they've taken on for an indefinite period of time are probably just for show! And she seems to be beckoning to you as well, question is whether she's offering you to admire her collection--I mean guests--or if she's offering you to join with them...guy or gal, she's cool with either one as well as anything outside of that tbh. Unfortunately for her little momentary fantasy, before any more "guests" can arrive, she wakes up from the very odd dream she was having. And for a good few hours after, she can't help but wonder how he would look frozen in marble too...

So yeah, this isn't canon, just a fun lil thing I thought I'd do hehe. Honestly, iirc the only ones in this pic that actually meet in my canon Pokejinka storyline at present are Spark and Lunes, because I have Verdantia (my Leaf Green team) standing in for the Red encounter in the HGSS portion of the story. That and Renee doesn't evolve into Mismagius until after the Colosseum story segment, for obvious it's-gen-3-so-Mismagius-doesn't-exist-yet reasons, same as why my XD Mawile is pure steel instead of steel/fairy. ...there really is no significance to who got statue'd here, they were chosen via rng with my only rerolls being to make sure they were from different 'jinka teams, though it is kinda funny (in a good way) that 2/3 of them are trans men when Renee's eventual canon love interest is also a trans man. Renee abso-lutely says trans rights >:3

Thoughts on comfey? It's one of those pokemon I always forget exists

Comfey sure does exist, all right. It is pretty forgettable, which is in part that it doesn't evolve, and in part because there are a lot of flower-based 'mons. Granted, one based off a lei is a bit unique, but I don't feel like it stands out enough against all the other grass-types out there (ironically, its like Flabébé in that it's not actually a grass-type itself as the flowers aren't part of it. In general it's basically a Flabébé/Klefki hybrid).

Visually, the creature itself is fine; I like the scalloped shapes that make up its body, and the colors are pleasant. The idea of a little 'mon that seems to use flowers as a form of camouflage isn't bad either.

However, I do think Comfey itself gets a bit lost in the lei portion. One could argue that's the point, but you don't look at it and see a creature holding flowers, you just kind of see flowers and then notice the creature afterward. This isn't helped by the fact that the green, while unique to it, gets overpowered by the red in the lei.

It also attaches the flowers via a blue tendril that comes off of it, which doesn't really look like part of its body. Compare to something like Klefki, where you can clearly tell the ring is just its arms; here, you can't really immediately see how the flowers connect to the creature. Making the tendril green might've helped a little, though I also question why they didn't just make its arms the rings (too similar to Klefki, I guess?).

I almost wonder if this line couldn't have leaned into the way the creature gets lost by intentionally making it look similar to the flowers. Like it's a little 'mon that's evolved (in the Darwinian sense) to look like a plant, and it carries flowers and feels nervous without them because it's trying to camouflage itself within them. Or heck, maybe it's a Falinks kind of thing where a bunch of the flower-like 'mons group together and that's what forms the lei—maybe you could have a mechanic where you chain them yourself into different colors. IDK, just spitballing here.

I'm not sure what could be done with Comfey in the future as it doesn't feel like an evo would make sense, but maybe some kind of convergent could make sense. They could take a jab at those awful plastic tourist leis by making the none-native-to-Alola convergent a poison-type that sickens people with its scent instead of relaxing them or something. Whatever they do, Comfey could definitely use something to make it stand out more.

Anyway, Comfey is an alright 'mon—nothing outright bad, but nothing all that memorable about it either. Just catch a Klefki instead.

😐 I can't count on two, three, however many hands just how many times I've seen people say "X character in the game is actually Y character from the Pokespe manga!" or bring up the manga as if it's the "original" content for the games, I'm at my limit. Questioning if I'm wrong, but Pokemon is KNOWN for having a billion spin-offs not made by Gamefreak or it's original creator. Pokespe is "a" manga, like electric tale of Pikachu. It's not "the" manga, just the most popular/game accurate. Right?

Hi, there anon! You're absolutely right there are multiple mangas. We have some that follow the games, that follow the anime, the movies. There's no official manga. Pokespe just happens to be the most popular manga across the world. It's not even the most game accurate. Pokemon Zensho which came out after Pokespe and the anime is the most 1:1 adaptation of RBGY yet other than what we see in the Pokemon Origins adaptation. And yeah, I feel you about being over people trying to insist that the manga is the true canon. Out of the three big adaptations (the anime, the mainline games, and Pokespe) Pokespe is my least favorite. *ducks rotten tomatoes* Now, I'm not saying it's horrible, it has strong points that I like over both the games and the anime. It's just the writing for the arcs and the character changes *stares hard at the entirety of RBGY* just typically don't appeal to me the way the anime and games do and I tend to drop the arcs midway through because of the writing. Now why do so many insist that it's the original content for the games? It's because of a misrepresented quote the creator of Pokemon himself, Satoshi Tajiri who mentions that he felt that Pokemon Special was most like the world he was trying to convey in the games. People to tend to take that quote to mean that everything in Pokespe is what "truly" happened when that quote most likely meant just the worldbuilding and atmosphere that couldn't be realized in the Gameboy games. Remember Satoshi Tajiri was heavily involved in the creation of Pokemon Red/Blue/Green (he's credited as Director, Game Designer, Scenario Writer, and Map Designer) If the story beats and character arcs from the manga were what he wanted that would've been in the games from the get-go. And if not in RBGY (because there was a lot of struggles with getting Pokemon out there in the first place) then certainly by FRLG where he was credited as Scenario Writer and Executive Director. The Scenario writer is the big one because RBGY/FRLG are the only two games where he's credited for this. Scenario Writing is literally writing the story for the game. And yet by FRLG we don't have evil gym leaders outside of Giovanni, Blue/Green Oak still gets to be champion even if briefly, Lance isn't evil and has powers, Blue/Green the girl wasn't kidnapped by the mask of ice with Silver and has a fear of birds, and Yellow as a character doesn't exist. I think though Satoshi Tajiri certainly enjoyed Pokespe which is still high praise from the guy responsible for the concept of Pokemon. It's just people take it and run with it mainly to bash the anime but it spills over into the games as well. I think it's good for the community to remember that the games, anime and manga are all separate canons. Here's another quote from Satoshi Tajiri from Dr. Lava's Twitter Page. The main takeaway of that quote is the games and anime exist in separate parallel universe. This applies to the manga no matter what some people might try to say. And all that being said that doesn't mean that canons don't influence each other. As we see in Let's go Red/Blue/Green's teams mimic what was in Pokespe, but we also see the Team Rocket Trio from the anime (which also happened in Pokemon Yellow). Then we have the battle bond Greninja that also takes from the anime as well as the Shiny Beldum from ORAS triggering lines from Steven that reference Alain. So the games take note of other adaptations, which isn't a bad thing as both the anime and the manga have strong points that can help build the worldbuilding from the games.

he is so silly his favorite video game is probably unironicly shadow the hedgehog. i think it's sad he has never interacted with red once not even in pokemas which is so weird to me. milesverse silver and red (also leaf/green but she's from an alternate universe so she doesn't count) are brothers (same dad) so uh yeah. more milesverse lore silver basically tried impersonating red during the main story ethan like immediately figures out he's full of shit not only because he looks nothing like him but also silver dropped his trainer id so lmao. the team rocket grunts he fights don't realize though. so uh yeah the meow meow

it's an incredibly wonderful game about living your life to the fullest even though death is inevitable with characters i adore. it is also a game created by a guy who said that he has never had a friendship with a woman and it shows. never play a persona game worst mistake in my life 0/10 don't recommend. it is also one of my favorite games of all time. special mention to the new content added in persona 5 royal actual peak fiction it is so good and on its own could be my favorite game of all time. too bad it's still persona 5. persona 4 is just bad for the love of god never play persona 4

i am. a big fan of kh. sorry for liking the disney game i can't help it. the kairi in my url is in fact kairi kingdom hearts. i will defend her honor to the end of times no one gets to bully her when im around. i kinda hate the kh fandom though specifically the people who are really invested in the ships there is a lot of misogyny there i fear. back to the game kh2 is fucking amazing it's so fun to play and the ending is so cool and the first four hours is good actually fuck you. hashtag kairi sweep give her a game square enix you cowards

Well-

-I actually really liked that aspect as well. Like I said, they used the destruction of Cinnabar Island as a recurring bit of trauma either directly for Green or indirectly for Red and his dad. Or that Misty's anger issues and sense of inferiority is something she addresses but naturally has issues dealing with. Or that Cheren's pursuit of truth and ideals causes him to make a massive mistake but since it's so ingrained into who he is, he can't realize that he took things too far.

There are also little aspects too, like Green's date attire being what her Adventure's self wore. Or Latias taking the form of Bianca like she kept doing in the movies. Shows a level of deep understanding of the Pokemon franchise.

All in all, it really pulls off the concept well. Better than say, Insurgence which is rather immature in comparison.

--As for the characters (this is gonna take awhile):

Red's a good protagonist for this kind of game, between his 'Frienergy' ability and just being naturally likable and friendly. Though he's rather-no, he's extremely naive with say, Klara. Although that might be my own knowledge of her character inteferring with my view. I also like the detail with him having no forgiving option for Cheren yet/him being audibly worried about Blue getting access to Foreverals to make him more human than say...Joker or Yu.

-Blue's such an asshole in the first month, it's really unpleasant since he gets so personal with Red it makes him come across as very petty and vindicative. I get that his point is that Red's ability and how Oak supports him means he kind of gets more chances than normal but given that Red in turn can't lie, which is a very big issue, I somewhat view it similar to autism: That Red has advantages and disadvantages that other people don't have. And that his chances from Oak are just that: chances. He still has to capitalize on what he's given.

But Blue does become a lot better after Week 4, where he's actively trying to be a better person. Even though he hasn't gotten over his issues, he's visibly trying to be better. Hell, I even felt like defending him when Yellow accused him of just being an asshole again because he was genuinely being that forward and honest about trying to be better.

-Jesus, I did not expect to go so hard for Green at first. On a pure attraction level, I was gonna aim for Hilda or Serena and later Dawn but Green's jokes, moments of vulnerability and sheer devotion to her friend is something else. When I said I wouldn't let her go, I was damn serious. Girl confronted a deep seated phobia for Red after only knowing him a month- you do not let a lady that high of caliber go.

-Ethan...He's giving me Sayori flashbacks so I'm just gonna pretend he doesn't exist right now.

-Brendan

-Sabrina...Jesus christ, she just got hit with the 'bad time' stick. Being able to read minds without being able to turn it off is already horrid but then she's basically FORCED to violate people's boundaries by airing out everyone's dirty laundry. And on top: She looks like THAT around a bunch of hormonal late teenage guys. She must have the world's best poker face.

-What the fuck is happening with Flannery? Who gets THAT grumpy in the mornings?

-JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, they went a complete 180 with Bianca. They went from using her as the hyperactive shortstack for comedy relief to 'Hey btw, her dad's dead and now here's the complexity of grief, bye!'

-Whitney's a pretty interesting take since she supposedly acts nice and kind...but she's clearly got MANY issues given how 'active' her social life is and how stubborn she is about changing. A bold choice to make one of your characters so flawed in a way that would make them pretty unlikable and I have to respect that.

-Hilbert's a weird case of trying to be the biggest edgelord in the whole cast (only working because Silver isn't directly trying) but also showing clear hints of both immaturity (with his childish habits) and maturity (in how he confronts Bianca about her grief and attitude). Honestly reminds me of Mordred.

-I wonder how they're gonna handle how Tia seems to proclaim herself a guardian of humanity while trying to forge connections with humans...and kind of seeing herself above them. At least they addressed the Pokephilia deal...

-I was NOT expecting Drydan to be as cool as he is but damn if he's not a good guardian.

-Lance...what the fuck man? Let me guess: his Feraligahtr was 'holding him back' and now he's got a permenant chip on his shoulder. Still doesn't excuse him for being so petty. I mean fuck, I was using the Pikachu to Parafuse everyone and he was doing great at it.

-Cheren... Look, I get the point. Red shouldn't have hide his secret. That's true. But jesus christ has Cheren done everything to demonstrate that he hasn't really learned his lesson. It's pretty clear he acted out of jealousy in some part, given that I don't remember him ever trying to confront Red privately. And now he's being so petty that he acts like Red deserved it. I get that's his arc too- to know what he did wrong. But it says a lot that he can't hold back even for Bianca.

-Klara...Well, that's one way to adapt her character: have her be an undermining bitch who shit talks everyone then verbally back tracks the moment she's getting push back. Let's just say the skimpy Salazzle dress was rather appropriate.

So I finished Week 8 of Pokemon Academy Life Forever.

Finally got that Green date. Apparently, Klara either REALLY dislikes Green or REALLY likes Red cuz she sent in her Slowpoke to basically spray toxic shit all over the dating location. Salvaged it by not going full hog on the first date.

We got to see stuff from Cheren's POV. He's going through some shit. But A. He never even tried asking Red about Frienergy so I find it hard to feel sorry for his situation after that. And B. He didn't even bring up what happened with Bianca. Dude, that's like your kind-of girlfriend.

And it seems we have an overarching plot being set up.

All in all, a rather good fan VN. (At least the developer didn't throw a fit at canon...)

Have been thinking about doing a heart gold play through, screen caps or no, but before I get into that, I still have this team of ghostly shinies I hatched who have been waiting for their own island adventure.  Ultra Sun is the only gen 7 game I haven’t played through yet, and I /really/ want to catch me a shiny Blacephalon, which is I guess the big ambition for this run.

So anyway, here’s the team after completing our first grand trial.  Their personalities are still sort of taking shape in my mind, but I’m getting a feel for them.  Ghost Gum and Olynder are a bit more shy and withdrawn.  Sparky and Liir more cheeky and energetic.  Archimedes is a bit awkward, while Hank’s just a sweet sweet baby.

I’ve never had any of these pokemon as shinies before, and I really do like all of their shiny looks, though admittedly some are better than others.  Shiny phantump is the real stand out here - it’s stark white bark and red autumn leaves are downright inspired, being both hugely distinct from the original while still feeling completely natural.  Its coloration captures a spooky autumnal feel that is just perfect for a ghost/grass pokemon.

Rowlet and Misdreavus are green shinies, which I’m not normally a big fan of, but both of these manage to win me over.  Rowlet’s minty green and dark forest green are both very nice colors, and they contrast well with the white face and orange beak and feet for a very nice shiny overall.  Plus, a green shiny brings out Rowlet’s grass typing, which is otherwise less than clear from its regular palette.  By comparison, Misdreavus’s olive green fading to mustard yellow is rather drab and a lot less appealing on its own.  But contrast with the red eyes and necklace do help, and since it’s a witch-themed pokemon, having a green shiny makes for a cute enough Wizard of Oz reference that I can’t help but like it.  It’s honestly really been growing on me, the only one where my opinion has significantly changed after spending some time with it.

Shuppet and Rotom aren’t very distinct from their regular colorations, and that’s usually everyone’s /least/ favorite kind of shiny, mine included.  That said, I can’t bring myself to dislike these, though it’s hard not to see ways they could have been a lot better.  The cherry red color of rotom, while not far removed from the duller orange of the regular palette, is still very appealing.  But the peach colored wings are a significant downgrade from the electric blue on the original.  I wish they had picked something with a bit more contrast from the red - a bright yellow, maybe.  As for shuppet, the shift from dark blue to a slightly lighter shade of blue might be more noticeable than the color change for shiny garchomp or gengar, but only just barely.  But it does make shiny shuppet a bit more ghostly and spectral, enough so that I kind of like it despite myself. I just wish they had gone a lot further with it.

Snorunt… is kind of a sad case.  Not because shiny snorunt is bad, far from it!  It’s highly distinct from the original AND has that pale ethereal blue that I love, which also plays perfectly into its ice type.  The bright yellow trim also looks really nice contrasting with the blue.  I love shiny snorunt.  The problem is that soon Snorunt will evolve into Froslass, and it will go from having a wonderful and distinct shiny coloration to being yet another shiny that’s only barely distinct from the original  Yeah, I’ve already got a couple like that in this group, and I kind of like them anyway, but at least they started out that way, they didn’t have to evolve from a fantastic shiny to a meh one.   I don’t know, maybe shiny Froslass will grow on me once I have one of my own, but I’m expecting to feel rather disappointed.

But we’ll see.
