However, when Z increases beyond a certain point, added neutrons can no longer stabilise the nucleus, and this is suggested in figure 27.1 by the fact that there are no stable nuclei beyond lead, Z = 82 (the ²⁰⁹83Bi nucleus was, for many years, thought to be stable, but was shown in 2003 to undergo alpha decay, with a half-life of 1.9 × 10¹⁹ years). (...) Careful inspection of figure 27.1 shows that there are no stable nuclei having Z = 43 or Z = 61. (...)
