Y/N’s POV:
It took what felt like an eternity for Beau’s name to be called at the local Helena Rapid Care center. Y/N was pretty sure that it was because he was an Alpha, and one with the Rut hormone still present in his bloodwork, because they were literally the only ones there, and they didn’t even call them back into a private room until the Alpha Doctor, John Carter, that had saw him when he’d gone in for his gunshot wound had sown up to the center, still drinking his coffee and walking around eating his donut like he could care less that Beau and Y/N had been sitting alone in that cold waiting room with Beau running what Y/N had guess was a pretty impressive fever, and totally uncomfortable, for more than an hour. So much for ‘rapid care’, honestly it was a good thing the man wasn’t bleeding, because he would have bled to death before they decided to call him back.
When they did finally call his name, the Beta male nurse walked them to an exam room in the very back of the building, and demanded that Y/N help ‘her Alpha’, change into a hospital gown, before leaving only to return with two different male nurses, one of which was an Omega who looked completely terrified to even be in the same room with Beau, JUST so that he could draw a blood sample.
Y/N could tell that Beau wasn’t used to being treated this way. He was the sheriff; mostly respected in the small town. He wasn’t a danger to anyone, and even though Y/N and Beau had their issues, she was sure that even if he was in full fledged rut, he’d never hurt a hair on anyone’s head. Hell, he’d shown her his gun, and told her to fucking shoot him if she felt that he’d hurt during his rut!! He was never a threat to anyone and the way they were treating him made her blood boil.
Sure, there were some really bad Alpha’s out there. Some of them were dangerous. Some of them used Omegas and Betas as if they were nothing more than a wet whole to knot. Property. Beau was NOT one of those Alphas, and the fact that they seemed to make that assumption about him, and treat him as such, was just fucking rude and hurtful. Not to mention he already felt horrible anyway.
When the door shut, Beau, completely uncharacteristic to the way he’d treated her from the moment she’d picked him up at the hospital yesterday, had slid closer to her in the chairs they had them sitting in and leaned his head against her shoulder.  They could have at least supplied him with an exam room that had a bed, but apparently they couldn’t be bothered to have him that close to the main desk, so they had shoved him in this little room with just two straight back chairs. Y/N shifted so that he could at least lean into her more comfortably as she set there stewing in her anger. She wasn’t sure how she’d pull it off, because as far as rights go, Omegas had very little rights, but she was definitely going to contact Jenny and Beau’s other partner they called ‘Popcorn’, to make a formal complaint against this place, regardless of whatever happened between Beau and Y/N. This was cruel.
She was just about to say, ‘fuck it’, and get Beau dressed to take him across town to another hospital that might at least treat him like another human being instead of a fucking rabid dog, when a loud rap sounded on the door, and Carter opened it.
“Okay, let’s have a look at that shoulder, '' he announced, ignoring Y/N completely and stalking over to Beau with the full air of an annoyed Alpha as Beau sat up straight next to her. “Then we will go over your blood panel with you that was drawn when they brought you back here.”
The sound that the chair he dragged across the linoleum floor made Y/N flinch as he settled himself in front of Beau, and started to unwrap his shoulder. Beau just kept his head down, clearly he felt like utter crap for even having to come here, the least this douchebag could do was be a little more respectful to him, but Y/N guessed that he was in a mood, and just didn't care.
“Your shoulder looks fine,” he announced after a moment before he started to rewrap it.
“But it hurts worse,” Beau protested, and the doctor shot a glare in Y/N’s direction that left little to no doubt that the doctor’s source of annoyance was actually HER rather than Beau.
“That’s because the fever is burning off the pain medication before you can really get much relief from it,” he answered sternly. “Which brings me to the next issue I want to address here.”
The doctor stepped back and glared at Y/N as if he hated her very being, and she sank back in the chair to make herself smaller in spite of herself. Honestly, she hated looking weak in front of a room full of Alphas.
“Has anyone ever explained to you how your body’s function? How your hormones, especially the all important Alpha Rut Hormone is produced?”
Both Beau and Jenny just look at one another in confusion before shaking their heads and looking back towards the doctor, who pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head in exasperation.
“The Alpha Male Rut hormone is stored and produced, in the testicals, much like testosterone. When a male successfully ejaculates, the hormone, along with a strong dose of testosterone and live sperm is released from the body. That’s why in order for the rut to pass, he needs to find a mate to help him, OR, if he’s young enough, he can manage with toys and just self ejaculation until enough of the hormone has left the body, and the rut passes.”
Both Beau and Y/N were staring at the doctor like a deer caught in headlights, but Y/N was pretty sure that she knew what the doctor was getting at, and slowly, Beau seemed to catch up too.
“But I’m not in rut,” Beau argued, “and my shoulder isn’t infected, so what are you getting at? Why am I running a fever?”
“When your body is not able to release the Rut Hormones in the way the creator, or biology, whatever you believe in, intended, it is cycled through the system and back into the body, causing a rut fever, which is exactly what you have. You have so much of the Rut Hormone present in your bloodwork this morning, I’m surprised you’re not feral.”
Beau looked down at his lap, blushing deeply under the doctor’s gaze, and Y/N temper rose as her nostrils flared. So this is how they treat sick Alphas who might be feral? Like rabid dogs?
“The only way you’re going to get rid of the fever and not go feral, is for that Omega you have over there in the corner of the room get off of whatever prude horse she’s riding on right now, and do what nature intended the pair of you to do, because the fever is going to literally fry your brain, and you’re going to be nothing but a drooling, feral mess that someone will have to put down.”
The sound that erupted from Beau’s chest damn near made Y/N fall out of the chair she was sitting in. He shot to his feet so fast, with his hand around the doctor’s throat, that she didn’t even really see the movement, until she registered that he had the doctor around the neck, and was attempting to choke the man to death.
“Never speak about my Omega like that again, or I will snap your skinny little neck. Do you understand me?” the Alpha warned, and the doctor could only gasp and nod as Beau dropped him to the ground.
“Get him dressed and out of here, I’m no longer going to be your primary provider,” the doctor said as he stood to his feet and adjusted his lab coat before storming out of the door.
Beau stood there angry and breathing heavily between Y/N and the doctor until the door was closed, at which point Beau turned to her, shame and disgusted clearly plastered over his face.
Y/N stood slowly, approaching the Alpha as if he could snap on her at any moment, because honestly, she wasn’t sure what to make of him. He’d never stood up to anyone about her before, and it wasn’t something she expected, but if the doctor was right, and the hormone was present in his system that heavily, he was dangerous, and could indeed snap if he was set off.
“Come on Beau,” she said, grabbing his shirt and showing it to him. “Let’s get you dressed and take you home.”
Beau’s eyes lingered on her for a moment before he let her help him out of the hospital gown, he didn’t say a word, just stared at the floor. The grim silence that fell around him was almost palpable, and she wondered if this is what it was like in the final moments that someone had just accepted their fate, and given up. Sheer, painful, utterly silent loss.

Beau’s POV:
Beau’s feet felt as if they weighed 1,000 lbs as he followed Y/N out of the clinic through the back door, because they refused to let him walk through the front of the clinic, into the cold, sleeting rain. His shoulder was screaming in pain, and his chest felt as if it weighed a million tons with each breath he took as he did his best to stave off the impending panic attack.
This was it, the end of the road for him. He was going ‘home’ to die on the couch of the one person that could save his life, and honestly, it was his own fault. He was the one that stupidly made her hate him. He was the one that pushed her away. He was the one who refused to do what instinct told him to do the night she showed up at his trailer, all because he thought she deserved better at  her age than to be stuck with someone that carried as much baggage from his past as he did. He’d created the recipe for his own end. He had no one to blame but himself. That didn’t make it hurt any less.
If he could just go home to his trailer, then he could end it himself before it got too far, and feral. He would at least be able to die with some measure of dignity then. Not a drooling, fever-brained mess that most likely won't even be able to talk. He’d have rather gone in the line of duty than this.
Beau crammed himself into the passenger seat of her little car, and waited for her to settle herself in the car and close the door to the cold before he cleared his throat to force himself to speak, praying to whatever god was listening that she would either feel sorry enough for him that she’d let him die his way, or that she wanted to unload him bad enough, at this point, either way he’d take it.
“Please take me back to my trailer. I wanna go home,” he said, his voice rough and barely above a whisper as he stared blankly out of the window. The first good snow would set in soon, but most likely he wouldn’t be able to see it. He’d probably be dead before it settled onto the ground.
“Maybe we can try another place,” she tried. “That’s just one person’s opinion. Maybe there’s a doctor in another county that can help or—”
Beau just shook his head and stared back at her, defeated, sick, and more alone than he’d ever felt in his life, it was enough to close her mouth without him even opening his.
“There’s no doctor going to help in another county,” he said, letting one single tear spill from his emerald depths that were swimming with emotions. “Just take me home so I can at least die in my own bed. Can you please let me have that much? I will leave a note, saying it was my choice so that you won't get in any trouble. Please?”
Y/N  sat there staring back at him for a moment, clearly debating over something but she had no idea what. Finally, she nodded as she put the car into drive, and turned onto the main road. Beau’s thoughts drifted to his daughter, and he picked up the phone, and opened his text messages, but he had no idea what to even say? How could he tell her he was going to die, all because of this? He didn’t know how to say goodbye.

The Change: Beau
Tumblr media
Summary: Beau's having a normal Saturday night when he catches a strange scent in the wind...
The Change
Pairing: Alpha!Beau Arlen x omega!reader
Word Count: 8,000ish
Warnings: language, angst, minor violence/injuries, fluff, implied smut
A/N: Y'all wanted more of The Change and I thought what better way to fill in some of the gaps than by taking a peak through Beau's perspective! While not 100% necessary to read The Change to understand this story, it's highly recommended!
_________
Saturday Night
“Dad, are you okay?” I turned my head towards Em, forcing a smile. She raised an eyebrow from her chair nearby the fire pit, a blanket over her lap. “You look worried.”
“It’s fine.” Shit. I bit my tongue but she was giving me that look again. That “we need to communicate openly, remember what the counselor said, dad?” look. I slumped down in my chair, trying to ignore the strong whiff of omega floating through the breeze.
I could smell Em by my side. All sugar cookies, lavender, fresh linen, with that oh so subtle hint of fresh rain that was baked into the Arlen pack. Scenting had it’s limits though. It only worked maybe twenty feet or so away.
So why the hell did I smell an Omega with rain in her scent but nothing else? We had some land to ourselves, a good ten acres, on the edge of the neighborhood. There was no feasible way I could be smelling an omega all the way up here.
“Dad!” Emily barked. I shot upright, looking around for any sign of danger. “What’s wrong with you? You smell…weird.”
“Weird?” I lifted my jacket collar and sniffed, something certainly off about it. She shrugged.
“You smell, like you did when you found me at the mine,” she said quietly. “You know, way on red alert. What’s wrong?”
“I’m not sure…” I said, standing slowly. I was prepared to make up an excuse but Emily was watching with those big doe brown eyes and it made my heart clench. Communication. Right. “I uh, smell an omega which is weird when it’s only the two of us out here.”
Em smirked, a frown crawling onto my face. “Well there is one reason Alphas can smell an omega that’s far away when they aren’t in the pack. You know…soulmates.”
I blinked at her, cocking my head. “That’s not…your mom was-”
“Daddy.” I froze still, eyes locked on hers. “I mean this in the nicest way but you and mom are not soulmates. Your bond broke way before you got divorced and soulmates never get divorced. You care about each other but it’s not that soulmate love.”
“I thought you wanted me and your mother back together for the longest time,” I said quietly, slowly sitting. Emily slumped down, fisting her blanket.
“Me too. But you’re happier here than I think I ever saw you with mom. What’d you tell me? Don’t settle for convenient and easy?” I smiled, reaching over to mess up her hair, earning a groan that made my heart happy.
“Sometimes I forget my sassy child is full of wisdom,” I said.
“Going to traumatic murder camp and getting kidnapped will do that to you,” she said with a cheeky grin. I rolled my eyes, chuckling as I ruffled it one more time. She’d been pretty shook up after everything last year and Carla didn’t love Em’s dark humor but the counselor said it was a healthy way for her to cope and shit, I wasn’t about to stop her.
These days, it was hard to tell anything even happened to her besides the occasional nightmare.
“I’m going to run out real quick and pick up some ice cream. Flavors?” I asked. She rolled her eyes. “What?”
“Go find this little omega of yours. I can handle being alone,” she said. I stared at her, Em rolling her eyes. “Fine. You can have a sheriff come over.”
“Thank you,” I said, kissing her temple. “Put the fire out for me please when you’re done. I’ll be back soon.”
“Have fun finding your soulmate!” she teased, not noticing the way my heart jumped up to my throat at her words.
Twenty minutes later I was walking around town, following the growing scent of rain when something else mixed in. Something sharp, painful.
Danger. Omega in danger. Your Omega is in danger.
I took off in a sprint down the sidewalk, following the scent and turning the corner to a dark parking lot next to a pharmacy.
“Get off!” someone muffled a shout under a large hand, that someone being my goddamn omega, my soulmate, my everything.
I drew my weapon and fired a shot in the air without thinking, nearly pulling the trigger on the two scumbags pinning her down.
Calm down. She needs you more than you want to hurt them.
I reluctantly took a breath, listening to the inner voice in my head. “On your bellies. Hands on your head or the next one goes through your spine.”
The two assholes rolled off of her and I quickly glanced at the omega. Her cheek was scuffed up and she looked sacred but damn, she knocked the breath out of me.
Hairs prickled the back of my neck as I inhaled her scent.
Fuuuuuuck. She smelled like fresh rain, she had that Arlen pack scent. My vision swam for the briefest of moments as my heart thudded happily at finding it’s soulmate. Alright, I could be a pile of mush later. I needed backup and these guys restrained before I not so accidentally started shooting off pieces for touching her.
“Mam’, are you alright?” I asked. She nodded quickly and thankfully it looked like they hadn’t done more than knock her to the ground before I was able to step in. I pulled out my phone, shoving it between my shoulder and ear. “Dispatch, this is Arlen. I need two squad cars at the Rite-Aid pharmacy off of Main. Two suspects in custody. Attempted assault. Vic appears okay besides some minor injuries.”
“We’ll have two cars over in under two, Sheriff.”
“Thanks, Abby,” I said, staying on the line but shoving the phone in my pocket just in case. I secured one man with my cuffs but I needed something else unless I wanted to sit on top of this guy. Meanwhile, the omega was scrambling across the pavement, trying to pick up the items she’d bought into the plastic bag in her hand. She reached for a small pack of zip ties, slightly odd to pick up in the middle of the night but I’d hold off on my judgment.
“Mind if I borrow that?” She let me take the package and remove a tie, securing the second man, albeit he could get out if he really tried. “Thank you mam.”
She was clearly petrified and putting on a brave face. She shoved a bottle of pills in her bag as I asked her once again if she was alright.
“Never better!” She said in an abnormally high pitched voice. She popped to her feet before I could help her up, a slow sigh escaping me. “Uh, thanks.”
Be a calming presence for her.
But then she was trying to leave down the dark parking lot again and I grabbed her arm on instinct. Didn’t she realize the safest place for her was by my side? “Whoa, whoa. These guys can’t do anything to you. Backup will be here in two minutes tops. I know you want to get home but we need a statement and you should get that scuff cleaned up by a paramedic. Hell, I can do it for you back at the station.”
She just kept staring at me and alarm bells were going off in my head. Did she have a concussion? Did she hit the back of her head? Okay, she needed to be seen by a doctor right now. “Alright. I think you hit your head a little harder than we both realized when they knocked you down. Why don’t you take a seat-”
I was not expecting my dream girl to proceed to knee me in the dick so hard my life flashed before my eyes. I heard a sorry squeak out as she took off and I lay on the ground, trying to get my bearings.
“Nice one, sheriff,” snided one of the men in custody. I grunted, kicking him in shoulder as I sat up. “Fucker, you can’t do that!”
“If it were up to me, I’d beat the shit out of you, drop you off a cliff and let the animals eat you alive.” I rolled to my knees and got up as a squad car showed up, an officer running out.
“You alright, boss?” I waved him off.
“Read these two their rights. I’m going after the victim,” I said, jogging past him and down the street, catching tail lights in the distance. I made it to my truck and was on the road just as she turned left about a mile away. I cursed as I lost sight but then I rolled down my window, taking a deep breath.
Her scent was subtle but I followed it down a dirt road and up a barely there path through the trees to a rundown looking cabin. There was a light on inside and I jogged up to the door when her scent was stronger. “Miss? It’s Sheriff Beau Arlen. We met just a short time ago. I’m doing a wellness check. Please answer the door.”
The omega ripped open the door, the fear from before replaced with etches of worry.
“Hi. My dad fell earlier today. I think he broke his leg. He’s in the bathroom.” Oh, this poor thing. I nodded, giving her a smile.
“Okay. We can call an ambulance and-”
“He’s terrified of public places. Of catching the…sickness.” Sickness? What the hell was she talking about? “I know he needs a hospital but is there any way we can limit the number of people he’s around? Like a doctors office or something?”
I breathed deeply, picking up on her father’s bland scent indicating he was Beta. But in her own home this Omega should have smelled like something more than fresh rain. Anything at all.
Shit, she smelled like Emily had before she fully presented. Like a blank canvas. But how the hell had this woman in her early thirties that was presented as omega not smell like one?
“How the hell…” I shook my head. She simply hadn’t had a proper heat before which in theory was possible if she hadn’t been around an Alpha during her cycle before. Strange but not completely unheard of. A groan in the background had me straightening myself. “Alright. I’ll see what I can do to accommodate his…needs.”
She thanked me and attempted to have me leave but I was already texting dispatch, telling them I was about to have a first time adult heat. God, I remember when Carla had hers. She was bent over in pain one second yelling at me for existing and trying to jump my bones the next telling me how much she needed me. Even though I was struggling through a damn rut in exhaustive pain.
That should have been my first clue that her needs would always outweigh mine.
I sighed when our argument turned heated, the poor little omega in front of me overwhelmed with fear and hormones and likely a good dose of paranoia. She collapsed as I caught her in my arms, gently laying her down to the ground.
“What the hell did you do to my daughter!” shouted her father from a room off to the side. “You infected her you-”
“Hey!” I barked, placing a pillow under her head and brushing the hair from her face. I stood and stormed over to him, wincing at the nasty piece of meat that was his leg. “You are going to tell me exactly what has been going on around here with her, with you, all of it.”
“You got her sick!” I squatted down, narrowing my eyes. He returned it, breathing hard. “You nasty smelling mutt. You bite her and I’ll kill you.”
“So you do know a thing or two about this situation,” I said with a smile. “Now. Tell me everything or this nasty mutt with a gun and a badge will start thinking you’re keeping your daughter locked away and doing some very nasty things.”
“I would never, you perverted-” I snarled, the Beta biting his tongue.
“Do not disrespect me. I am here to help her and her alone. Now she’s going into heat, uneducated and scared. Her body is going to be in pain and she doesn’t understand why all because you have lied to her for a decade. I would never be so cruel to my daughter.” He swallowed, his gaze going to behind me where she lay on the floor. “She will be fine but you need to tell me everything. Now.”
Five Hours Later
“Good evening, Dr. Y/L/N. This is sheriff Beau Arlen of the Helena police department. I apologize for the late call but we have a situation here with your father and sister,” I said from the corner of the hospital room where Y/N laid fast asleep. She’d awoken confused and more than a little…primal a few hours ago. I could only imagine what it felt like to go through your first heat with your soulmate sitting eight feet away.
She smelled delectable, enough so I had to ask for some scent blockers for myself so I’d stop getting so damn horny around her.
“Please call me Emmet. Are they okay? I haven’t heard from my sister in a decade so any news-”
“She’s alright Emmet. She’s currently at our local hospital being treated for her first heat. Your father broke his leg badly a few days ago and is in the ICU recovering from surgery.” Emmet swore on other line and breathed deeply.
“My father is paranoid, Sheriff. I called him on the night of the Change years ago and told him to take my kid sister out of the city for a few days until we knew what was going on. I called him five days after and told him it was okay to go back but they never did. I’ve explained to him over and over again that she is perfectly safe. I could never track him down.”
“They appear to be staying at an old cabin on the edge of town here,” I said, Emmet groaning.
“They went to grandpa’s hunting cabin? Jesus christ. I forgot that place existed. Is Y/N alright?”
“She’s fine, Emmet. She’s a strong woman, her body just needs to catch up a little is all.” Emmet huffed.
“She was supposed to work at a big accounting firm. She got a really good job out of college and then she disappeared with him. The paranoid fucker’s probably kept her locked up there for years.” My heart skipped a beat. “Sorry. He wouldn’t hurt her. Dad’s just…always been overprotective of her. Always. Something happened when she was young and…yeah, he’s always been afraid of her getting hurt again.”
“Emmet, any information you can relay to me might help me understand your father better. I need to know if your sister has been at that cabin all these years of her own free will or not.”
Emmet was quiet for a beat, a chair creaking as if he were sitting down in the background. “Our father was a lawyer. A prosecutor. He put away a killer…for a very dangerous and powerful family. I was in college at the time. They broke in one night and killed our mother and kidnapped Y/N. She was maybe four? I don’t think she even remembers. It took a few days to get her back and that was only because she bit one of them and ran away and out a window.” I smirked, closing my eyes.
“Always been tough as nails even when she’s afraid, huh.”
“Yeah. Dad was different with her after that. Always blamed himself. Way too protective. She tried to appease him but she always wanted to live her own life too. The idea of her being claimed by someone-”
“He literally can’t handle it,” I finished. Emmet hummed. “Thank you for the information Emmet. I’ll speak with your sister more but I doubt we’ll press charges.”
“Mr. Arlen, I’ll be down in a few days. I need to speak to my sister, and father. I’m in Seattle these days and I think it’s best if she stays with me for the time being.” I cleared my throat, walking out of the room and to the hallway. “My father will need intensive rehab if it’s as bad as you say and then in-home care, both of which will be much easier to provide if I’m there-”
“Emmet, there’s not an easy way to say this so I’ll just spit it out. I got involved tonight because I was able to scent your sister from my backyard over eight miles away from where we met. Now, you’re a doctor. You tell me the only scenario in which that is possible.” Emmet was quiet, my heart hammering. “Dr. Y/L/N-”
“Are you a good man?” he asked. I sat down on a hall bench, glancing down.
“I’m divorced, I got ten years on her and a teenage daughter. I am by no means perfect. If she wants to go to Seattle, I will not stop her.” I crossed my arms, leaning back against the wall. “But I can promise you, she will be safe with me and free to live her life. I do not intend to hold her back.”
“I seriously doubt my sister’s going to want to leave your side once her heat calms down and she realizes who you are to her,” he said with a hum. “Sheriff.”
“Yes?”
“I’ll take my dad off your hands once he’s ready for in-home care. Let Y/N live in a town without him for a while.”
“What’s she like?” I asked, screwing professionalism for the moment. “You said she wanted to be an accountant?”
“Pft, god no. She would have worked at a bakery if she had her choice but you know how parents can be,” said Emmet. “You said your name was Beau, right?”
“Yes, I did.”
“Well Beau, considering this is likely the first of many conversations we’ll have throughout our lives, a word of advice. If she wants to work at a goddamn bakery, let her. If you guys ever need help, just tell me. I got more than enough. I just want my baby sister to be alright.” I smiled, relaxing my shoulders.
“I appreciate it Emmet but I do alright on my own. Like I said, I will not be the one holding her back from whatever it is she wants to do.” I could feel her scent pick up, twitchy, wanting me nearby. “I got to run but I appreciate the talk and I’m looking forward to meeting you. I’ll make sure she gets a chance to talk to you tomorrow.”
I hung up and slipped back in the room, pulling my chair closer, her scent calming. My phone dinged and I frowned. What the hell was Emily doing up at 2 in the morning?
How’s the soulmate search going? Pop says hi by the way. We ordered pizza. There’s leftovers in the fridge if you ever come home tonight. Please tell me you’re not stalking some woman in the middle of the night.
“This child,” I grumbled, typing a long message before my phone pinged again, eyebrows raised.
I can talk to her. I know more about being an Omega than you do to be fair. She’s probably scared. I can dig up those Change puberty books from the basement.
Thank you, Em. We’ll talk in the morning. Now get some sleep..
I frowned, shooting off another text.
Tell Pop if he eats all my mint fudge ice cream again I’m firing him.
Too late. Night dad!
I sighed, resting my phone on my chest and sliding down in the chair. I kicked off my boots and propped my feet up at the end of Y/N’s bed.
“So. Not how I imagined my first night with my soulmate,” I said quietly. “How about you, darlin’? Everything you dreamed of?”
She snored lightly in bed, rolling over on her side and staying in a deep slumber.
“Well don’t chat my ear off, I’m trying to sleep,” I chuckled. She scratched her belly absently, breathing deeply. “Goodnight, omega.”
The Next Day
Despite an albeit awkward start to the day, the smile on Y/N’s face as she and Emily shared the far side of the booth and devoured a brownie sundae was putting a big on on mine. Y/N hadn’t had much of anything besides basic foods for ten years and she was ordering every greasy, fatty, sugary thing on the menu.
It was kind of adorable the way she guzzled down a pile of poutine on her own and then asked for seconds.
“Is Y/N coming home with us?” asked Emily a little eagerly. I lightly kicked her shin under the table, Em pouting. “That’s child abuse.”
“Child abuse is you hitting me in the nuts with a baseball bat when you were four. Pretty sure you were trying to make sure you were an only child from the start.”
“I wouldn’t mind a sibling-“ I kicked her again, Emily glaring back. Y/N looked between us with a goofy smirk, gravy at the corner of her mouth.
“You guys are really cute. I wish I’d had that with my dad,” she said, her face falling momentarily. She cleared her throat though and wiped off her lips, glancing at me. “Your dad and I have to talk about a lot of things but in the meantime he said he had an idea about where I could stay. You guys have a trailer on your property?”
“Dad used to live in an air streamer when he moved here,” said Emily, smirking at me. “If you need a love nest-“
“Do not tell her about nesting,” I growled, Emily grinning like a Cheshire cat. Y/N blinked at both of us, her head tilting. I cleared my throat when I sensed her…fuck, she was horny as fuck.
Cool it with the Alpha voice bucko.
“Nesting is um, well…” I trailed off, Emily pipping right in.
“It’s when the Alpha goes all crazy and makes you a comfy bed with pillows and blankets and stuff so you can pass a heat surrounded by their scent. And to fuck in a lot but the scent stuff too.” I dropped my head to the table, a low whine escaping. “They teach us in health class.”
“In my health class all they did was show us pictures of STI’s,” said Y/N, her fingers grazing my scalp. I raised my head, heart skipping at the feel of her touch in my hair. Her face was so soft, so unlike the fearful one of last night. “Relax. I’m not going anywhere and Emily’s bluntness is appreciated.”
Emily glanced at Y/N and then myself, making an excuse to use the restroom. Y/N’s hand dropped to the table, a pout forming on my face. She giggled though, the sound calming me. “Can you…smell me, Y/N?”
“Sure,” she said coyly, laughing when I rolled my eyes. “I think so. I don’t quite understand it but I know you’re nervous. You like when Emily teases you but there’s something a little on edge with you. I’m still trying to figure all this out to be honest.”
“It’s okay,” I said, reaching a hand up and gently taking hers in mine. My thumb stroked over the back of her skin and I held it up, closer to her. “You won’t be able to do that with most people. Only your mate can you tell certain things. We don’t exactly understand that part of it yet.”
“I imagine it gets a bit complicated when you mix advanced evolution with metaphysical souls,” she said, tilting her head, turning my hand over and stroking my palm. Her big eyes stared at my skin, nose twitching when she inhaled. “Everything in my head says I’m a moron for trusting a strange man, that you could hurt me or worse. But then I do this…”
She tugged me closer, pulling my hand to her warm cheek, her skin velvety soft. Her bond pulsed hard under the skin of her neck, so subtle no one would notice but I could see it thumping away like it had it’s own heartbeat. Y/N’s eyes searched my face, looking for an answer to a question she didn’t know how to ask.
“There are some people that don’t believe in true mates. They think it’s just hopeless romantics making shit up,” I said, pulling my hand down, grazing her bond with my fingertips. Soft lips parted, Y/N’s eyes dewy at the touch. “Touch my neck.”
She tentatively reached across the table, letting me guide her hand to the left side. “My gland is much smaller but it’s there. Now push down on it.”
Y/N didn’t look convinced but gently nudged two fingers against the skin. I jerked back just as she did, a bolt of peacefulness shooting through my body. She rubbed her own gland, breathing hard. “What the fuck was that?”
“Think of it like there’s a rope connecting our souls. We just tugged on it,” I grinned, rubbing my chest. “So we can’t get lost from each other ever again. True mates form that bond even without the physical connection being met yet which is why you could tell I was nervous.”
Y/N smiled, placing a hand over her bond. “So that’s why you don’t feel so strange. Huh.”
“We can take this as slow as we want to,” I said, taking out my phone, checking the time. Y/N shoveled one last scoop of ice cream in her mouth before sliding out of the booth. “Where-“
“Emily has school in the morning. We should head out,” she said, catching Emily returning from the bathrooms. “We’ll meet you out front?”
“Y/N.” I hopped up quickly. Shit, was I making her nervous? I opened my mouth to speak but she was right there, placing a finger to my lips.
“It’s okay, sheriff,” she murmured, grazing her knuckles over my beard. “Just need a little girl talk.”
“About what?” I asked quietly.
“About…just trust me?” I held up my hands, Y/N backing away before popping outside with Em.
“Sheriff,” said a deep, monotone voice. I spun around, Donno standing there with a styrofoam box. “Rhubarb pie.”
“I didn’t order-“ Donno shoved it forward, my hands barely catching it.
“She wants it.” I raised my eyebrow, glancing outside to where Y/N and Emily were leaning against the truck. “She wanted pie and this is all we have.”
“Uh, thanks Donno,” I said. He half growled and I handed him my credit card. He grumpily took it behind the counter, handing it back with a grimace. “How’s things with Tonya?”
He grunted and I chuckled.
“Later, Donno. You and your girl stay out of trouble.” I ducked outside with the pie, the girls giving me a smile. “Everything all set?”
“Never better.”
“Hey, Em?” I asked after showing Y/N the airstreamer when we got home. She was downstairs talking to her brother, all sorts of giddy scents coming off her. “Got a sec?”
She put her phone down, frowning when I pushed it away and set it on the charger. “First off, it’s bedtime. Second, is everything okay with you and Y/N? I know everything’s been moving fast and if you want to talk about anything, I’m here.”
“We’re fine,” she said softly, giving me that look I’d seen in therapy too many times. I pouted, Em sighing. “She was…her body did something at the diner. She said you guys touched bonds which made her…you know…down there…”
“Oh.” I sat on the edge of her bed, holding my hands on my lap. “Was she embarrassed? I shouldn’t have-“
“No, she just wanted to make sure it was normal to…get all…slick and fuck, this is as bad as the sex talk.”
“I thought we did a good job with it,” I said, ruffling her hair. “Are you okay with her being here?”
“Duh,” she said, sitting upright and giving me a hug. “She’s your soulmate, dad. Of course, I want her to stay with us.”
I tucked her head under my chin, giving her a deep squeeze. “Dad. Too tight.”
“Alright,” I said, releasing her. “I’ll make sure Y/N understands you already have a mom and-”
“We kind of talked about that when you were paying.” Em shrugged. “Y/N said she didn’t want to overstep anything and said it’s probably best right now if we’re more like friends? Until we figure out what we want.”
“I’m going to have a hard time keeping up with you two staying ahead of me,” I chuckled, hearing a loud crash downstairs. I stood up, Em pouting. “Stay. Go to bed.”
She grumbled as I left and jogged down the steps. Y/N was bent over in the kitchen, her scent stressed but not in pain.
“Y/N?” I asked. She popped her head up, swallowing thickly as I saw she’d dropped her bottle of heat medication and the pills had gone all of the floor. “Hey, hey. What’s wrong?”
I knelt down and started to help pick them up, Y/N moving farther away to pick up the scattered pills. I reached out and caught her wrist, Y/N’s breath hitching. She looked over her shoulder, body tense.
“It was an accident,” I said softly. She looked down and I frowned. “Hey. I can smell you’re upset but we still need to talk. What’s going through that head? Did your brother say something?”
“No.” She shoved the pills in the bottle, waiting for me to deposit mine inside. The cap snapped on and she shot up, stepping past me for the front door. I caught up to her on the front porch, not touching her but holding up my hands. She squeezed her eyes shut, rubbing her temple. “Please move. Better yet, take me back to the cabin.”
“...If that’s where you want to be,” I said. She went straight to the truck, barefoot, climbing inside. I got in after her, leaving my keys in my pocket. I could sense her agitation rising, especially when I turned towards her. “What did your brother say, Y/N?”
“He told me he contacted my dad right after the change. How dad would call him every few years. He didn’t know I thought he was dead all this time,” she breathed out. She shook her head, wrapping her arms tight around herself. “You have an idiot for a soulmate.”
“Now I don’t believe that’s true for a second. I-”
“Beau.” Y/N glared at me but her eyes were more watery than anything else. “You have a teenage daughter that knows more about how sex works in this world than I do. I’m…a child. You deserve so much better than me. I’ve never had a real job. I’ve never had my own place. Shit, my longest relationship lasted two months. J-Just throw me back in the woods so I can be alone.”
Omega in pain. Omega in pain.
She moved as far away as possible, staring out the window as a primal urge in my head was trying to take over.
Protect her. PROTECT HER. Do your job.
“No.” She shifted in her sheet, making her eyes as hard as she could. “I don’t care if you hate me. I will never abandon you. Ever.”
“I’m a fucking project, not a soumate,” she scoffed.
“You think I’m perfect?”
“Um, have you met you because yes, you are,” she grit out. I growled, her scent shooting through the roof as I leaned over and cupped her cheek. Her lips parted, breath mingling with my own. “W-What are you doing?”
“I don’t like when you’re mean to yourself,” I said, my voice lower than usual as I kept a tight control on letting my Alpha out. Y/N shivered under my touch and she looked away embarrassed. “Don’t you dare be embarrassed for making slick. You are in heat next to your true mate. I’d be concerned if you weren’t.”
“I don’t know anything,” she whispered, still not looking at me. “I don’t know how to be an adult or have my soulmate be someone way out of my league or what you want me to be to Emily. You have an ex-wife and you have such an important job and you’re single dad and it doesn’t matter how nice you smell or if you give me lightning bolts. I am and will be a burden to you.”
I sat back in my seat, breathing hard. Y/N sniffled, keeping her head low. “I know I’ve upset you, I can smell it.”
“I’m upset you’re upset. I’m not upset at you,” I said quietly. Every instinct I had said pull her into my lap, bite her neck and press the magic fix it button to flood her full of so much ooey gooey good feeling crap she’ll never remember why she had doubts in the first place.
Talk to her.
I swallowed, closing my eyes. “My partner died two years ago. He was my best friend.”
“Beau.” She unfurled her hands from her body surely because one of them was interlacing with my own. “I’m so sorry.”
“I blamed myself for a long time. For too long. For something out of my control,” I said, opening my eyes, finding her misty ones. “It drove my ex away. It drove Emily away too for a while. I’m so scared of loving someone else and losing them. Y/N, it took everything in me to not kill those men that attacked you last night. I am not fucking perfect and you are way way too hard on yourself. News flash, nobody knows how to be an adult. We’re all just pretending and a smart woman like you, hell you already are thinking of my daughter before I am. You are not behind. You are right where you’re supposed to be.“
“I…” She sighed, squeezing my hand. “I’m sorry that happened to your friend.”
“Did you get any of the rest of that?”
“Yeah,” she said softly. “So we both need to take it easier on ourselves.”
“I got faith in us.” She wiped off her face as she nodded, her scent turning calm and gentle. “Come on. It’s been a long day and you’re at the tail end of your heat. You need to get some rest.”
“Dad!” I bottled upright in bed, groggy and reaching for my gun when Emily burst in the bedroom. “It’s almost seven. Move your ass. I’m not getting detention for being late again because of you.”
“Good morning to you too,” I mumbled, setting my gun back on the bedside table and flopping back against the pillows.
“Pro tip,” she said, whacking me with a pillow. I groaned, growling as I sat back up. “Maybe go make you and your new omega girlfriend some coffee? Not like she talked about coffee for like a solid thirty minutes with your coffee snob ass last night.”
“Someone’s got a mouth on her this morning,” I said, tossing back the covers, Em rolling her eyes as she left. “What?”
“I’m so going to be late,” she muttered, jogging downstairs. I grumbled, padding into the bathroom and getting ready for the day. Em was in a mood when I found her by the front door waiting for me but it was no big deal to me if she was late a few minutes. For one, that school started too damn early at 7:30. She had freaking study hall first period of the day which was just plain stupid. Plus that principal of hers had more than a few unpaid parking tickets I could leverage.
I whipped up a cup of coffee and poured the rest in my thermos, tossing some half and half in the mug before whistling on my way outside. “Dad!”
“Five minutes, pumpkin. Why don’t you lock up and I’ll meet you at the truck?” I slipped outside, Em muttering again as I walked across the yard. WIth two knocks on the door of the airstream, it opened, Y/N half-asleep as she answered in last night’s clothes. “Good morning, gorgeous.”
“You’re lucky you’re hot,” she mumbled, perking up when I held out an orange mug. “Is that-”
“Coffee. Two tablespoons half & half. Hold the cream and sugar.” Her eyes welled up as she took the mug. “You really missed coffee, huh?”
“You were paying attention to what I said last night,” she whispered. I cocked my head, leaning my hip against the door jam. “Thank you for the coffee, Beau. I really appreciate it.”
“No worries.” The truck horn honked and I rolled my eyes, Y/N smirking. “I have to run before that one hotwires the car without me but I’ll be back and we can go shopping for whatever you need. Food. Clothes. Whatever you want. I’ll be back in about thirty.”
“Thanks, Alpha.” She stepped forward and pecked a kiss to my cheek, grinning when I blushed. “That’s adorable.”
“I’m from Texas. We don’t blush,” I said despite feeling the radiating heat on my face. She raised an eyebrow, her smile turning a hair darker. “Omega…”
“You know that only makes me want to find out how to make you blush more, right?” I pouted but didn’t mean it, Y/N seeing right through it. “All that for a peck on the cheek. I wonder how red I can get you when I properly kiss you.”
“Down girl,” I purred, adjusting myself and in desperate need of one of my scent blockers again. “Let’s cool our jets. Once we start playing around, it’s going to be hard for either one of us to not want to bond.”
“Sorry,” she said, not looking it one bit. She pressed the mug to her lips, eyes closing as she took her first sip. “Wow. Yeah, I’m so keeping you. This is the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had.”
“Well that’s a relief,” I chuckled, the horn honking incessantly in the background. “I’m sorry about the sassy child.”
“It’s fine. Take her to school. I’ll be here.”
“I’ll be right back, darlin’.”
Four Weeks Later
Y/N was tucked against my side, resting her head on my shoulder and draping her arm over my chest. Soft, slow breaths left her lips, nose buried against my pec. Oh so carefully I thumbed over the fresh bite mark on her neck. Ordinarily I’d think the best thing to do would be not touch it but instinct was telling me to gently soothe the ache away and her pain would be gone by the time the flood of hormones in her body dropped.
“How we feeling, Omega?” Y/N tightened her hold on my body, snuggling harder.
“Fuzzy,” she mumbled, a smile on her lips. “You?”
“Fuzzy’s a good way to describe it,” I chuckled. “You did so well.”
“Not so bad yourself,” she laughed, eyes closing. “You smell even nicer now if that’s possible.”
“I know the feeling.” I stroked my fingers up and down her bare back, tracing patterns against the soft flesh. “So…would you maybe want to move into the house?”
“You really know how to pillow talk, babe,” she said against my shoulder, smirking against it. “And yes, I’m tired of being away from you guys.”
“Okie dokie.” Y/N snorted, lifting herself up onto her palms to look at me. “What?”
“You’re way too hot to be that adorable.” I shrugged, smirking as I gripped her waist and pulled her tight against my chest, earning a gasp. “Oh you want to play?”
“With you? Forever.” I grasped her chin with my thumb and finger, pulling her into a deep kiss. “Who’s ready for round two?”
Three Months Later
“Emmet!” Y/N squealed and jumped into her brothers arms the second I had the front door open. He laughed deeply, dropping his luggage on the porch to catch her.
“Fuck Y/N, I’m forty six years old. You’re going to throw out my back if you keep doing that every time I visit,” he laughed, spinning her around. “How you doing, kiddo? Keeping your Alpha in line?”
“She wishes,” I said, giving him a brief hug when he set her down. “Where’s Max?”
“She’s coming up on Saturday. Covering a double at the hospital,” said Emmet, giving Emily a hug when she popped out of the kitchen. “Em, mind helping me get the presents?”
She threw on her coat and boots, following Emmet outside as I saw Y/N’s father putter around their rental car. Emmet said something to him, the man giving Emily a brief smile before he carefully walked across the shoveled driveway.
“Darren.”
“Beau.” Y/N frowned at him, his jaw clenching when he saw the faded mark on her neck. “Emmet’s right. You really did claim her.”
Y/N stepped onto the porch, waves of powerful scent washing over us. “This is my house, dad. If you’re going to be a dick, you can go sit in a hotel room by yourself for a week while the rest of us celebrate the holidays. As a pack. Beau’s family is coming in tomorrow and you will not-“
“Down omega,” I purred, Y/N allowing me to pull her back a few steps. “She’s a tad defensive of me and Emily is all. Darlin’, why don’t you help the Em’s.”
A moment later Darren and I were alone. I nodded, walking him around the wrap around porch to the side of the house where a pair of rocking chairs sat. I took a seat in the far one, Darren hesitantly sitting in the opposite.
“Y/N and I like to sit out here in the morning and have our coffee together.” Darren grunted, lips pressed into a thin line. “How’s the leg?”
“It hurts,” he grumbled.
“But you can walk on your own on it. Emmet says that’s a good sign.” He leaned forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Arlen, enough with the small talk. Say what you mean to say away from my daughter.” I leaned back, rocking a few times, enjoying the chill breeze.
“Your daughter didn’t want you to come. The only reason you are invited is because I asked her to give you another chance.” He scoffed. “You were pretty nasty when we showed up at rehab a few months ago and saw she was claimed.”
“You manipulated her into being with you. She doesn’t know it yet but you’ll turn on her. I know cops like you, especially cop mutts. Don’t blame me for seeing exactly who you are.”
“Well fuck you,” said Emily, appearing around the corner.
Back off, pup. I got this.
Only she ignored the warning in my scent, the clear line she would have picked up in favor of storming over in front of Darren. “You’re an asshole.”
“Em-”
“The mouth on you,” said Darren, frowning up at her. “You learn that from your father?”
“If anyone’s the manipulative asshole around here maybe it’s the guy who scared his kid into staying in a cabin for a decade,” she spit out. Darren opened his mouth, Emily holding up a hand. “My dad’s not perfect but thank god I have him. Bad stuff happened to both of us but he doesn’t keep me locked up. So maybe stop being an ass to the guy that makes Y/N happy for the first time in ten years.”
“Emily,” I said as she started to walk away. “Em!”
“Ground me but I am not apologizing,” she said, walking off back around the corner. I sighed, side eyeing Darren.
“You know what, you say and think what you want about me but don’t you dare speak ill of my daughter,” I said. “She has been through more shit than you could ever know so do not blame her for being defensive of her family which includes your daughter.”
I stood, putting my hands on my hips, looking out over the barren yard, a light layer of snow dusting it.
“It’s not personal,” said Darren after a beat. “I’d hate any man that tried to take her away. I’ve hated all of her ex’s.”
“I know something about having a daughter that was kidnapped.” I turned over my shoulder, Darren’s face paling. “You didn’t keep her safe. You squashed her. From the moment I met your daughter, I’ve had to help her learn that she can have goals and dreams of her own. She lived her whole life trying to appease you. She will never do that with me. Never. So I understand the fear and pain of dealing with your little girl being taken and feeling like a failure as a father. But we have to let them go because our little girls are a lot stronger than us fathers give them credit for. Let them show us. The only person my kid mouths off with is me, her mother, and Y/N. Her parents. For her to do that just now means you really ticked her off. So stop protecting Y/N for one second and get to know that strong kid of yours.”
He was quiet, no words spoken between us as he rose.
“Your daughter reminds me of Y/N when she was younger.”
“Em adores Y/N…aside when Y/N goes mom mode and makes Em do her chores,” I chuckled. Darren cleared his throat. “The girls are still figuring out their roles but Y/N’s gotten more comfortable stepping into that parental role. They’re friends more than anything. Family.”
“Right,” he said quietly. “How angry is Y/N with me?”
“Oh, pretty mad,” I laughed. “She’ll forgive you eventually. Probably. I’d stop calling her mate a manipulative mutt, though. Might help out there just a tad.”
He lowered his head with a nod. “Let’s go in before you freeze.”
“Alpha,” Y/N murmured from beside me in bed late that night. I had my face shoved into the crook of her neck, arms bundled under her maroon sweatshirt, formerly our sweatshirt, formerly formerly my sweatshirt. “Noooo, get your greedy hands away from my fleece.”
“No can do, darlin’,” I murmured, arms shoved under the soft material, her eyes narrowing. “I’m not going to cop a feel.”
“Sure you won’t,” she teased. “We can play in a minute. Real talk right now.”
“What’s up?” I asked, wrapping my arms around her waist, lifting my head. Her fingers raked through my hair, massaging my scalp. I hummed, resting my chin on her shoulder.
“I don’t know what you said to my dad earlier but thank you. He was different.”
“Well, Emily should really get the credit. She stole my thunder,” I said, Y/N’s scent swirling around the room. “Our girl really loves you, you know.”
She flushed, smiling when I kissed her jaw. “Thank you both then.”
“You’re welcome. Now,” I said, grabbing the ends of the sweatshirt, pushing them up her body. “I think you stole this.”
“Going to arrest me for it?” she murmured, pulling me into a chaste kiss before rolling to the far edge of the bed and out of my grasp. She sat up with a fake pout, batting her eyes as I crawled over. “That’s a good look for you, Alpha. On all fours for me.”
“For fucks sake, Omega,” I growled, grabbing her ankle and yanking her body underneath mine as she giggled. “What am I going to do with you?”
“I’m sure you’ll come up with something, Alpha Boy.” I laughed into her neck, kissing over her healed mark.
“For you, Omega, anything at all.”

My Masterlist          Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
When Y/N first woke up, she didn’t know what had awoken her from her slumber. For the first time in what felt like years, but was really only about two weeks, Y/N had actually slept. Which is probably why she woke up more than a little disoriented; coupled with being in mostly unfamiliar surroundings. Still, she could not pinpoint what had woken her up, until she sensed it.
It wasn’t a huge, drastic change in the atmosphere. Nothing Earth moving or world shaking as some better, more colorful worded Omegas than herself had often described it. It was subtle. It was a slight change in his scent, the sudden stiffness in his shoulders, even as he slept soundly next to her, it was the heaviness in which his chest moved with each breath, and slight crease between his perfect brows. The suppressants had worn off, he was in a full rut now. It was time.
It should have scared her more than it did, and maybe if she were honest with herself, she was a little afraid that somehow, they’d fuck things up again, but she wasn’t afraid of him. She wasn’t afraid of what they were about to do.
In fact, the more she thought about it as she watched him sleep, knowing well that his rut would get stronger, and it would wake him up soon, that she was sure this is what she wanted.
When she helped him through the first round of his rut, things were nothing but a blur of hormones and the task at hand. This time, she was able to experience the calm before the storm. She was able to get a glimpse of what the real Beau Arlen looked like. She was able to experience the calm, comforting, safety that she’d have to wake up to in the morning, instead of a cold bed, and another day at a job she didn’t really want to be at. He really was her person. She just didn’t see it at first. She did now.
Beau grunted heavily, and shifted in his sleep, tightening what was the loose resting of his arm around her waist into a tighter grip as he subconsciously fought to hold onto the first good night’s sleep he’d had in almost as long as she’d been without it.
The thought of what was to come seemed to light a fire somewhere under her skin, and it burned deep and low in her belly, long before he even opened his eyes to look back at her.
Still, she felt robbed, not only for herself, but for Beau as well. This is how it should have been from the start. Not the nightmare of an experience that it was for them. All this time they’d spent fighting, misunderstanding and hurting one another, could have been spent just being together and learning one another as an Alpha and his Omega. They couldn’t get that back, so she would just have to settle for making up as much lost time as she could.
Beau grunted heavier this time, a sound that came as a deep rumble as it made its way up to his throat from somewhere deep down in his chest, and his legs moved as the discomfort started to settle in, and his face scrunched before his olive-green orbs opened slowly, settling on her face. She let herself get lost in the soft, sleepiness of his gaze, knowing well that in his waking moments, that humanity would start to wain more, and the Alpha would start to take his rightful place.
“Morning,” she said, testing the waters to see if he would even respond, and to her surprise, he smiled softly at her.
“Mornin’” he murmured roughly, clearing his throat before closing his eyes tightly again.
“It’s almost time, isn't it?” she questioned, and he nodded before swallowing thickly and opening his eyes to search her face, the slightest hint of a yellow hug starting to form just around his iris, and she knew she had minutes, if that long, before Beau was going to go on hiatus for a while.
“Almost,” he admitted, “are you sure you’re okay with doing this?”
“Are you really gonna ask me that, Beau Arlen?” she questioned. “After everything we’ve been through?”
Beau shrugged, letting go of a breath she didn’t know he was holding. “Guess I’m just a gentleman to a fault.”
“We’ll see about that in a few minutes,” Y/N teased, and he snorted, his eyes rolling dramatically.
“I didn’t exactly hear any complaints last time sweetheart,” Beau shot back, and Y/N laughed out loud at his sudden boldness.
“Okay, okay, you got me there,” She relented, not wanting to challenge the Alpha, knowing full well that it wouldn't do well to irritate him right in that moment, as badly as she wanted to tease him.
Beau shifted again, this time she could feel the hard outline of his already half hard cock pressing against the thin fabric of his tight fitted black boxers that he was wearing when they had fallen asleep the night before, and just like that, as if someone had flipped a switch, her body already starting to produce slice for her Alpha and he hadn’t even laid a hand on her.
Beau nosed along her hair line, and down the shell of her ear, breathing deeply, and allowing his lips to leave a hot trail just over her throat as he descended to her shoulder.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen, you know, when we start, Carla used to accuse me of being forceful or mean, so you do remember where the gun is if you feel scared don’t you?”
“Beau,” Y/N growled as she sat up slightly in his arms so that she could see him better, and she could almost see the anxiety and fear rolling off of him, it made her sick to see him that way. She never wanted to stranger Carla more than she did at that moment. Typical Narcissistic bitch. She said and did everything she did to Beau to make him question everything about himself, even if it wasn’t true. Which makes her line of work make a lot more sense now that Y/N thought about it.
“I stayed with you for days when your rut hit you unexpectedly, and you were in enough control to not only not hurt me, but also resist the instinct to claim me. So, for her to say that you’re too rough? That’s utter and complete bullshit. You never once scared me, and you never once hurt me.”
Beau stared at her, trying to figure out whether or not she was telling the truth. She was pretty sure he could tell that she wasn’t lying, because his features softened after a moment before he reached for her face, letting his fingers trail the soft skin of her cheek before he tucked the loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
“I’m so scared I’m gonna fuck this up,” Beau admitted. “Like I fucked up my last relationship.”
“Beau, that woman did NOT deserve you,” Y/N said tracing her fingertips across his freckle dusted chest, and she’d be a lair if she said she wasn’t a little proud when he shivered underneath her touch, and his sharp, green eyes rolled slightly. He wasn’t going to be able to hold on much longer, and fuck, she was looking forward to watching him just let go. It was a beautiful sight if she did say so herself.
“She abandoned you when you were at your lowest, when you needed her the most, because you were hurt and grieving. No mate does that. She was a self-absorbed, narcissistic abuser, the only good thing that came out of that WAS Emily. You did nothing wrong, she did. It wasn’t you that tore apart your marriage to her, that’s just what SHE wants you to think.”
She had a feeling Beau didn’t believe her, but she also knew that he was losing the cognitive focus it took to argue the point to the impending physical need that was about to take full focus. She could tell he was straining to hold himself back as long as possible with every quick breath he took, his scent was so strong now that it was hard for her to even concentrate anymore, but she needed him to know that she wasn’t Carla, and this wasn’t going to end the way that did.
Beau’s eyes closed tightly again, and his grip tightened on the sheet that was resting under his left hand, even though he was now laying on his back, and she was mostly sitting up next to him, she could see the outline of his hardness just under the sheets. This was it. It was time.
He just needed to let go.
“Alpha,” she voiced finally, after a moment of watching him struggle within himself, and when he looked at her, his eyes were no longer green, but instead, they were almost black, completely blown wide with need, and hormones, only a ring of slight golden glow rested around them. “It’s okay, let go.”
As if a switch had been flipped in him, in what could only be described as almost a predatory movement, Beau slowly moved to sit up in the bed next to her, his strong hands gripped her hips tightly, and moved her flush with his chest as he scented her deeply, his teeth scraping roughly over her mating gland.
“Mine,” he growled, deep and low. It made her empty cunt pulse around nothing and slick track down her into her now ruined panties.
“Yours Alpha,” she agreed, “now, take what belongs to you.”
Without another word, Beau ripped the underwear and bra from her body before she could even really react, leaving her completely bare before him. His hungry eyes raked over her body like she was a meal and he was a starving man.
“Present Omega,” he commanded, “we can play later, right now, but right now, I need to mark that pretty little neck of yours. That way everyone know just who the fuck you belong too.”
Y/N’s body moved without her consent, damn near falling into position for the Alpha, that moved behind her, easily shedding his boxers, and slapping her hard on the ass, sending a moan cascading from her lips, and a chuckle rumbled behind her as the bed dipped under his weight.
“Like that Omega?” he questioned, running his fingers through her already dripping folds, testing the water to find she didn’t need any pre-work from him at all. “Already so fucking wet for me baby girl, such a good girl.”
She keened desperately, her back arching as his thick cock head slipped through her folds, gathering her slick to the head of his pulsing length. “Please Alpha,” she whimpered, and a deep growl rumbled low in his throat.
“I’ve gotcha Omega,” he said, slamming home in one swift thrust, damn near knocking the wind out of her and would have knocked her flat on her stomach had his arm not been around her waist bracing her.
“Gonna knot you, claim you, mark you up, you want that baby girl?” he questioned as he started at a punishing pace, ascending every word with a heavy thrust of his hips.
“Yes! Please Alpha!” she all but screamed, and his pace quickened again, every powerful muscle in his lean, sculpted body used to drill into her mercilessly, until his knot started to swell with every thrust, and the coil in her gut became tight to burst.
Beau lifted her flush against his strong chest, his thick tongue lapping at the place that would soon hold his claim as his knot popped, and her orgasm washed over her with the sinking of his teeth deep into her neck, her body quaking in his arms as he filled her up, and she wasn’t really sure what happened after that, because she was pretty positive she blacked out.
When she came to herself again, just as quickly as the storm had started for the pair of them, it had subsided. Beau had her on her side, his arm draped over her as best as he could, keeping her still as his knot slowly started to subside, and his tongue worked to clean and heal her new mark.
Everything felt different just that fast, calm, better. She was at peace. Suddenly, just so fast, the inner struggle was gone, and there was nothing but safety, love and comfort left in its wake.
Neither said anything, cause neither could really, all that they could do in that moment was experience this new, connected feeling that, even though Beau himself had been mated before, had never really felt. If either of them had to put a word to it, they would probably describe it as ‘complete.”
When Beau’s knot finally let go, Y/N turned carefully in his hold to face him, bright, green eyes meeting her own, and a tired, yet calm freckle dusted face greeted her. The rut was gone. His suffering had ended.
“Hey,” he voiced after a moment, his voice hard and dry, dripping with exhaustion.
“Hey,” she answered him, reaching up to run her fingers through his sweat-dampened hair.
“You okay?” he questioned, and she nodded, suddenly remembering his shoulder, which caused her to shoot upward to check him, but all seemed fine, and she breathed a sigh of relief as she settled back down next to him.
“I'm fine,” he assured her, “just really tired.”
“Then sleep Alpha,” she encouraged, “I’ll still be here when you wake up.”
“Guess I’m gonna have to thank Donno,” he admitted, “because if he would have never shot me, I would have never stopped being stubborn and claiming you. I was too stuck in my own issues.”
Y/N’s eyes shot open, and she stiffened in his hold, causing him to chuckle, his eyes closing and opening, becoming heavier by the minute.
“Donno shot you!”
“Yeah, it wasn’t the driver of the truck. Donno was hiding in the bushes, he was mad cause I didn’t claim you, and he shot me. I figured I deserved it, so I just let it go. Had he not done it though, I might have lost you forever.”
Y/N sat there in thought for a long moment, boarding between angry and grateful. God, she had a love hate relationship with Donno, but now, she really did owe him everything. As the sun sank down behind the clouds on her first day as Mrs. Beau Arlen, she had to admit that she really did owe him everything. They really were meant to be.

__________
Ten Years Ago
“Y/N!” You poked your head into the living room, giving your dad a smile when he stood there, back to you.
“Dad, I already got enough graduation presents. I mean it was just college, I didn’t need-“
He stepped aside, revealing the breaking news story on the tv.
Mystery Illness Affecting New York City Residents
He looked over his shoulder, frowning at you. “You’re not moving to the city next weekend.”
You scoffed. “Dad. I start my first adult job ever in two weeks. In New York City. I have to go.”
“No. Whatever the hell this is, it's happening there and putting people in the hospital. If your new job has a problem with that then tell them to kiss my ass.”
“What is wrong with you?” You stormed closer, furrowing your brow. Something was off. He was swiping a hand over his mouth, his eyes filled with dread. You glanced back at the screen with a swallow. “Daddy, do you know what this illness is?”
“No,” he said quietly, glancing down at you with a longing glance. “Tonight we need to leave town and go to camp.”
“Hunting camp?” He nodded. “But that’s in the middle of no…”
His face looked so much older all of a sudden, years and years of worry etched into the deep laugh lines around his eyes. “Why do you want us away from everyone?”
“Because isolation is the only way to guarantee you don’t get sick.” Paranoia. You should have called him paranoid. Said he was worrying over nothing. Said he was acting crazy.
But you simply nodded and excused yourself back to your graduation party with your friends, knowing it’d likely be the last time you saw them for a while. Or ever again.
“Dad,” you said that night as you packed up the cars, your father more frazzled than the time he lost you in the grocery store for all of eight seconds. “Should we call Em?”
“He’s the one that called me.” He shut the trunk, inhaling the night air deeply. “London. New York. Sydney. It’s global and it’s flooding hospitals. Em said small towns are next. I wanted you to have one last normal day, kiddo.”
“What exactly did Emmet say? Does he know more than what they’re saying?” you whispered, clutching your cardigan tight. “I thought he was in Africa doing that volunteer doctor program.”
“He is. But something…happened. People started getting ill and then acting crazy. Biting each other in the neck. Like animals.” Slowly you blinked, your dad pinching the bridge of his nose. “I know how it sounds, believe me. But I know my son and it’s the truth. He told me to get you safe.”
“Is he safe?” He closed his eyes. “Is he safe?”
“Emmet’s….” Your throat tightened, your dad wincing. “He called from his sick bed. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen. He said he loves us and we need to go before the whole world goes mad.”
Your bottom lip wobbled as he opened his eyes, gently shushing you. “Em isn’t dead, right?”
“I don’t know. His phone is dead,” he croaked out, wiping away your tears that threatened to fall. “But if what he said is true, the world will be incredibly dangerous in just a few days. We need to get you away from here before that happens.”
You wearily nodded, hugging him hard. “Dad.”
“Yeah, pumpkin?”
“We’ll be okay.”
“Yes we will. I promise.”
Present Day
“Fuuuuuck,” you groaned, the wind knocked out of you as one, no two, men pinned you down on the hard pavement of the pharmacy parking lot. The supplies you’d bought for your dad in the middle of the night were scattered on the ground. Half your mind grappled with how you needed to get those back to dad at the cabin while the other realized the men were trying to remove your pants and hoodie.
You snarled and kicked, hitting something hard, probably a shin bone.
A gunshot went off nearby and all three of you froze.
“On your bellies. Hands on your head or the next one goes through your spine.” The two men were rigid before rolling off of you on either side. You risked sitting up, backing away a few feet and turning on your bottom.
It was dark but even so you could make out the handsome brown haired man aiming a gun at the men. He had a presence about him, a calmness to the situation you weren’t expecting. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone, his jacket riding up so you could spot the shiny gold badge on his hip.
This guy was a cop.
Good news and bad news.
“Mam, are you alright?” You blinked, realizing he was talking to you between speaking into the phone. You nodded, the man humming, mentioning something about backup.
Shit. You had to leave before you got wrapped up in this. You started to gather up your dropped items as the officer handcuffed one of the men. “Mind if I borrow that?”
You froze, staring at him. He nodded toward your hand and the new package of zip ties. You handed it to him carefully, the officer quickly placing one on the other man.
“Thank you, mam,” he said, handing the package back. You nodded, shoving the package in your bag and crawling over between two cars, reaching for the bottle of pills that had rolled underneath. “Are you sure you’re alright, miss?”
“Never better!” you squeaked out, grabbing the pills and tying off the bag tight. You popped to your feet, the officer rising to his own. “Uh, thanks.”
You started to leave when he took two big steps over, catching your arm. “Whoa, whoa. These guys can’t do anything to you. Backup will be here in two minutes tops. I know you want to get home but we need a statement and you should get that scuff cleaned up by a paramedic. Hell, I can do it for you back at the station.”
You blinked slowly, the man’s friendly smile turning concerned as you weighed your options. “Alright. I think you hit your head a little harder than we both realized when they knocked you down. Why don’t you take a seat-”
You kneed him in the groin, the officer crumping into a heap and releasing you.
“Sorry!” You took off running to your car and peeled out of the other end of the parking lot before he could even get on his feet.
“Dad?” It was only twenty minutes later when you were entering the dark cabin, frowning that he wasn’t on the couch where you’d left him. “Dad!”
“In here for crying out loud!” You rushed over to the bathroom door, carefully nudging it open. Your heart seized when you saw him lying on the ground, his previously red inflamed leg now looking dark and swollen. “Did you get the-”
“Daddy, it’s broken. Why didn’t you say something?” He scoffed, forcing himself to sit upright against the tub. “Dad-”
“I’m not going to a damn hospital and becoming one of those…things.” He spit out the last word, venom laced behind it. You’d kept to yourselves the past ten years, dad only going to town in the dead of night to get food or supplies. Suffice to say, despite your best efforts, years of isolation hadn’t been great for his paranoia. Or your own.
He could never know that you were almost attacked. It’d destroy him after all he sacrificed for you. His home. His career. His life. Making sure you never got sick like Emmet had was his sole purpose.
“What if I drop you off at the hospital and…” both your heads whipped around when bright headlights shone through the windows.
“Someone followed you. Get the shotgun and-” You slammed the door shut on him, ignoring his angry shouts.
“Miss? It’s Sheriff Beau Arlen. We met just a short time ago. I’m doing a wellness check. Please answer the door.” You swallowed thickly, staring at the heavy wooden object. Shit, he’d followed you home. He was going to make you give a statement which meant being around other people long enough to get sick.
You glanced over your shoulder and sighed. Dad was no spring chicken anymore. Living in the woods and keeping up the land had kept him in good shape but he was getting older and there was no way he could survive a broken leg without help.
“Fuck it.” You stepped over to the door, frowning when you opened it. The man from before was standing there, a cautious smile on his face. “Hi. My dad fell earlier today. I think he broke his leg. He’s in the bathroom.”
“Okay. We can call an ambulance and-”
“He’s terrified of public places. Of catching the…sickness.” He raised his eyebrows, biting the inside of his cheek. “I know he needs a hospital but is there any way we can limit the number of people he’s around? Like a doctors office or something?”
He only cocked his head, eyeing you up and down. His nose twitched, inhaling sharply. You glared and subtly did a pit check. Okay, maybe you were a little sweaty but you’d nearly been attacked-
“How the hell…” Sheriff Arlen shook his head. “Alright. I’ll see what I can do to accommodate his…needs.”
“Thank you,” you said, starting to shut the door when he put a hand on it. You stared at one another, the sheriff’s nose twitching once more. “Please leave.”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Visions of what the men from earlier had planned on doing flashed in your mind and you clenched your fists, ready to fight. “Oh, sweetheart I am so sorry.”
“Sorry for what?” You grit out, widening your stance. He frowned, shaking his head.
“Your father might be able to be treated at a doctors office but you need a hospital.” You narrowed your eyes, the sheriff holding up his hands. “You call it the sickness? The rest of us call it the change. Now it seems to me that you lack some education on the topic-”
“I know exactly what those men tonight were going to do. I know exactly what the sickness, change, whatever you want to call it does to people and I’ll tell you right now, I’m not getting sick and becoming someone’s fuck toy.” He closed his eyes, muttering under his breath. Slowly, they opened to reveal green orbs, softly watching you.
“Sweetheart, your body changed ten years ago whether you believe me or not. Judging by the fact your only interaction with other people has been your Beta father-”
“He’s not Beta,” you growled.
“-Or very few works at convenience stores at night, you have never been around an Alpha long enough to be triggered into your first heat-”
“I am not one of those-”
“Omega.” Your brain went fuzzy when the word left his lips, hand gripping the back of the couch hard. “We need to get you to a hospital. Your first heat is incredibly painful without medicine. I know, I have a teenage daughter-”
“Stop talking!” you shouted, suddenly feeling flush in the face. You wiped off your brow before grabbing the nearest object, a pillow, and chucking it straight at his handsome face. “You did this to me! You made me sick coming here!”
“You became Omega ten years ago, the same night I changed, the same we all did,” he said, looking down his nose at you. “Now let me help you and your father before I have two patients on my hands instead of one.”
“Get out!” The room spun, a strong pair of hands catching you the last thing you remembered.
Your body felt considerably cooler when you woke although the sterile scent filling your nostrils made you want to gag. Great, you were in the hospital. You turned your head to the side, your oh so favorite sheriff giving you a waggle of his fingers from the other side of room as he read his phone.
“What are you doing here?” you grumbled, sitting upright with a strain.
“I figured you don’t have an emergency contact besides your father on account the whole survivalist in the woods energy I’m getting.” You glared at him, the man leaning back in his chair, relaxing further. “Your father is alright but he’s in the ICU. I’ve been told he’ll need to go to a in-patient rehab facility to learn to walk on it.”
“What?” You threw back the covers and got out of bed, freezing in place when you caught his cologne. Your eyes fluttered, jaw dropping slightly. “Jesus christ what is that smell? That’s…fuck is this what crack is like? What kind of drugs did they give me?”
He chuckled, glancing up with a smirk. “Let me guess. Vanilla with a hint of tobacco. Fresh cookies, a campfire, the cool mist of rain and something fluffy you can’t quite describe?”
“How did you…” You said, daring a step closer. You had a million questions in your mind about your dad but all your body seemed to want to do was get more of that smell.
“Because I know what my scent is.” You licked your lips involuntarily, breathing hard. “Down girl.”
You immediately backed up, shaking your head. “I-I’m sorry. That isn’t like me at all.”
“It’s your first heat and I’m the first Alpha you’ve properly scented on one. You have urges. Nothing to feel sorry for.” Your cheeks burned as you returned to bed, sitting on the edge with your legs hanging off. “In a few hours, your medicine will have fully kicked in and then you’ll be fine. I have a teenage daughter and so you’ll get monthly heats but as far as I understand, it’s extremely similar to your monthly visitor you were already used to.”
“I’ve been having periods for years and it doesn’t feel like this,” you said, his scent tickling under your nose, turning you on more and more by the second.
“The…randiness fades. You’ll be fine,” he said, glancing at you. “You really don’t know anything about the change or what it did to us, do you.”
“I know enough.” He frowned. “Why is my dad in the ICU?”
“His leg is shattered. The surgeon said he suspects he broke it a few days ago. He’s lucky to be alive and still have use of it.” You closed your eyes, gripping the mattress. “He didn’t tell you he was injured until recently, did he.”
“He said he fell today and it was sore. I was getting some bandages and a painkiller at the store tonight.” You groaned. “The fucker. He’s so scared…”
You opened your eyes when you heard footsteps, the sheriff kneeling down in front of you. Gently, he took both your hands, offering a kind smile. “Yes, the world was scary for a little while when we didn’t understand what happened but now we do. There is no reason you and your father have to hide away in the woods away from the rest of us.”
“You called yourself an Alpha.” He nodded. You noticed how small your hands were in his, could feel the surge of power he held within them. “Like how in animal packs, there’s an Alpha sometimes.”
“Let me explain this to you in the most basic of terms.” You swallowed, his fingers sliding up to wrap around your wrists loosely. “People that were bad before the change are bad now and people that were good before are good now. All that happened last night was you ran into a couple of bad guys. They were Alpha but so am I. We are not animals and neither are you.”
“But you could bite me and make me…” He smiled, a tiny eye roll in there. “Excuse me? What was that?”
“What you’re describing is a crime. Consent is still very much a thing, little lady. Believe me, I have no problem putting Alpha’s in their place if needed.”
You raised your head, the man tucking your hair behind your ear. “Are you sure you’re not just an anomaly?”
“Miss, I have a fifteen year old omega daughter. If I thought that world was truly that far gone, I wouldn’t let her out of my sight. Now, do you see her in this room?”
You rolled your eyes, the man standing with a chuckle. “You’re going to be just fine.”
“So you’re here out of the goodness of your heart?” you asked. He bit is bottom lip, looking shy all of a sudden.
“You’ve had a long night and I remember how frightening it felt the first night I changed. The world is no more dangerous than it was a decade ago. But it never hurts to have a friend when life gets hard.”
“Thank you,” you said quietly, a painful cramp ripping across your abdomen. He caught your wince and helped you to lie back down.
“Get some sleep. I’ll check on your dad for you.”
“Thanks. Oh wait.” He pulled up your covers and hummed. “Why were you at the pharmacy in the middle of the night?”
He smirked, patting your thigh. “I’ll check in with you in the morning, darlin’.”
Later That Morning
“Get out!” You flinched and backed out of your dad’s hospital room, closing the door behind you.
“He’s still angry, huh?” To your left appeared your sheriff, sporting a tan jacket and khakis, brown cowboy boots adorning his feet. You sniffled and nodded, the man giving you a reassuring squeeze of the shoulder. “Have you been discharged yet?”
“Yeah.” You sat down on a nearby bench, the sheriff joining you. You rubbed your palm with your thumb, skin peeling off eventually. He caught your wrist, gently moving it away. “He doesn’t want to go to a rehab center. He says he’s fine and I should take care of him until he’s on his feet. The part I hate is we both know it’s horseshit. He knows he needs help but won’t admit it.”
“Stay here a minute for me.” He entered your dad’s room, closing the door and remaining inside for a few minutes. The door opened with a creak, your sheriff waving you inside.
You frowned at your dad in bed, his arms crossed.
“I’m sorry for acting like a child,” he grit out. Your eyebrows shot up, gaze shooting to the sheriff who was giving your dad a friendly smile. But there was an undercurrent of authority to it that made your heart skip.
“Thank you?” you said. He sighed, quiet for a moment.
“I will go to rehab. I’m not your responsibility.” He cleared his throat. “I heard you’ve…changed.”
“Yeah,” you said quietly. Your gaze shot down, your dad tsking you.
“Sheriff Arlen….informed me of some things about the world. I think while I’m recovering maybe you…could get a job. Get back out in the world, not be stuck with me.”
You bit your tongue. What the hell was up with him? Did he not want you around anymore now that you were one of those…omegas?
“Mr. Y/L/N, we’ll let you rest. I’ll be sure to get Y/N home.” Your sheriff put a hand on the small of your back that sent a pleasant chill down your spine. God, he smelled even more alluring than last night.
Why did you kind of like it? How large his hand was, how comforting it felt. Maybe you were just touch starved after a decade of being alone.
“What is going on?” you asked when you were in the hallway. “Is he okay whatever your name is again?”
“Sheriff Beau Arlen. Call me Beau. Your dad and I had a small conversation. I explained a few things about the change and dynamic to him, told him I’d keep an eye out for you since he’s a tad paranoid. S’all good.”
You stopped, Beau leaving his hand on your back. He paused by your side, turning his head down. “I may have…sternly explained that you are the exact same as you were and that he can’t keep you locked away from the world. You’re a grown woman, you deserve to live your life.”
“And by sternly explained you mean scared the shit out of him.” Beau said nothing, only walked down the hall, urging you along. “Where are we going?”
“Home. I know you were discharged but you should still relax. I have some things to do but I’ll be by later on today.”
“You don’t have to come back. I’ll figure everything out on my own-“ Beau held up a hand before stopping in front of you, hooking his thumbs in the waistband of his jeans.
“Darlin’, I made your father a promise and I intend on keeping it.” He looked past you, licking his lips and making your nose twitch in response. “But first, we need to make a pit stop.”
You woke with a groan, jerking up in bed. A quick glance at the clock showed it was early afternoon. Ah, right. Beau dropped you off with some medicine and a book on the Change or so everybody referred to it. You’d taken a pill and fallen asleep a few hours ago, your body warm but otherwise feeling okay.
You clutched your blanket to your chest when something loud crashed beyond the bedroom door.
“I can’t believe they let you carry a gun,” said a young voice.
“Next time you get kidnapped, I’m letting them keep you,” he grumbled.
“Funny, dad,” the voice deadpanned. “Wasn’t it Cassie who found me actually? Hm?”
“Eh, eh, eh. Stop with the sass, child and help me make this.”
“Why are you helping this random lady so much anyways?”
“Just…cause it’s nice.” Your stomach grumbled loudly and you decided to risk exiting to the main part of the cabin. The door squeaked like it always did, two pairs of eyes on you when you poked your head out. “Y/N. How are you doing, darlin’?”
“Fine. Why are you in my house?” you said, glancing at the teenage girl standing in the sad excuse for a kitchen off to the side.
“Did you break into her house?” she asked, Beau looking back at her with a glare.
“Of course I didn’t.” He punched the bridge of his nose. “I told Y/N I would be back later.”
The girl looked at you with a raised eyebrow. “I apologize for him. He gets a little too into helping people sometimes.”
“Why don’t you go on the porch and do your math homework?” She stared at him for a moment, shaking her head with a smirk. “Emily…”
“I said nothing. But your scent did,” she sang song before slipping outside. Beau rubbed the back of his neck, a strong whiff of a nice scent, his scent, hitting you.
“Ignore her,” he said, still rubbing his neck nervously. You hummed, taking a seat at the two person table by the wall. “I hope you don’t mind we’re here. I figured you’d be hungry and Emily’s also an omega so she offered to talk to you if you’d like. She presented last year so she’s familiar with the growing pains.”
“You mean second puberty?” He chuckled, putting a casserole dish that didn’t belong to you in the tiny camping oven.
“It might not seem like it but we got off easy. You and I we just got a little something extra to figure out over a couple of months. She’s got to go through the whole deal.” You hummed, Beau wiping his hands off on a towel by the water pump and spinning around with a smile that made you relax. “So. How’s the pain?”
“Alright. Honestly it feels like a normal period, I’m just a bit warmer than usual.” You frowned, Beau’s face matching it. “You can skip the biology lesson since they gave me a run down at the hospital.”
“Will do. You get used to people’s scents pretty quick. It’s like personal deodorant and yes, you still need to use deodorant,” he teased, the air becoming thick. “Sorry. I’m intruding, aren’t I?”
“Well…if you were going to hurt me, you had your chance last night.”
“Those men…” He glanced down, stepping forward to grab hold of the back of the opposite chair and lean over top. Green eyes met yours, worry etched in them. “Did they explain the change to you at all, like what happened ten years ago, or just the body stuff?”
“No. I only remember people were getting sick and then my dad got us out of the city after my brother called. I’d just graduated college. I was meant to start my first adult job in NYC. So I don’t know what happened, only that my dad said the world was too dangerous for me.”
Beau pulled the chair and sat, biting his bottom lip. “It’s believed a highly contagious virus spread rapidly across the globe. A pandemic. This wasn’t an ordinary virus though. It didn’t cause illness, only…activated something existing within human DNA. What you remember from TV is when people got infected with the virus. I was living in Texas at the time. Me, Em, her mom, we all were floored. My ex was very warm but her fever never spiked high. Myself, I was exhausted. I could barely move for three days. Emily thankfully slept through most of it. She was only a little girl so it didn’t hit her as badly. When I woke up the fourth day, my ex was doing better and I felt much stronger.”
“And you had that thing on your dick?” He chuckled. “How the hell does that even work without absolutely destroying the person on the receiving end.”
“Because you changed too. Yours are just not as easy to see. You know child birth complications has gone down significantly the past decade. Women report far less pain too. We just…evolved as a species a little fast if you want to think of it that way. Most of us. There are a few people that were lacking in the genome sequence to be affected but by and large, we all became Alpha, Beta or Omega.”
You crossed your arms, tilting your chin up. “My brother is a doctor in Africa, one of the first places that got sick. He told us people were like animals. Biting each other in the damn neck and then I never heard from him again. Anything to say about that?”
He looked up, scrunching up his face. “Well you don’t seem to have a phone around here but I will track down your brother for you. Um, we may have also…gotten physical proof that we have souls and biting an omega in their bonding gland connects them to the alpha that bit them on a metaphysical level but it only takes if it’s consensual on both sides and fun fact the bond will break if one person doesn’t love the other one anymore, like a divorce, not that I would…know what a broken bond feels like,” he rambled out, clearing his throat. You blinked slowly, Beau’s face stuck in that awkward position. “I overshared, didn’t I.”
“Just…a lot to take in,” you said, rubbing your own neck and feeling a tight, hard lump. “Is that my-”
“Yes. It’s where our scents come from and I uh, I got to head back to work,” he said, quickly standing. He adjusted his pants and you noticed the bulge, giving him a glare. “No! No, it’s not…Emily!”
“What?” she groaned, giving you friendly smile when she came inside.
“I need to check in at the station. Please explain…things to Y/N. Heats, scents, true mates, that sort of thing. I’ll be back soon.” He left quickly, Emily raising her eyebrows.
“He’s kind of weird,” you said, Emily laughing before giving you a smirk. “What?”
“Now I get why he’s being so extra. You’re his true mate.” You put a hand on your head, holding up a finger. “Don’t worry. I’ll explain everything.”
Three hours later, you were more confused than ever. Emily was only a teenager but she was a smart girl and had explained the change, what being an omega meant and all of it. You were stuck on one little tidbit though. She could smell that her dad, your sheriff, was connected to you. Like soulmates connected.
What. The. Fuck.
You were still trying to process that information when his red truck pulled up, Beau waving awkwardly to where you and Emily sat on the front porch.
“Emily, pack up your stuff. We should let Y/N-”
“No, no, Alpha boy. This is how it works,” you said, freezing him in his place. His shift shifted wildly, strong and heated, musky with need. “I know why you smell so good. Were you planning on telling me you were not in fact just being nice last night but you were physically incapable of leaving my side at the hospital. On account of the whole fated mates thing.”
Beau’s gaze shot to Emily, his eyes turning stern. “Oh no big boy. You don’t get to be mad at her.”
He put his hands on his hips, sighing to himself. “Would you like to have dinner with us?”
You felt like you had whiplash. Wasn’t he just about to argue something like you were too new to this world? Or no, we’re not mates, I was only helping. Or that it was only affection? Or that he couldn’t know?
“Would you like to have dinner with us?” he repeated.
“Wow,” said Emily besides you. “Her face is literally the what the fuck emoji right now.”
“Emily,” gritted out Beau. You held up a hand, Emily taking it and walking you down the two front steps.
“Have you ever been to Donno’s diner? Oh my god, they have the best food. Come on, let’s-”
“I’m sorry, I’m not…” you gestured to yourself. You were in sweatpants that were a decade old, a plain t-shirt and your hair was a frazzled sweaty mess. Beau gently took your hand from Emily, his touch telling your body to calm down, that everything was okay.
“If you’d like we can eat in private but you do not need to hide from the world anymore. You are gorgeous just as you are,” he said, voice soft. Emily tilted her head, looking him up and down.
“He totally means that too. I can smell it.” Beau growled, Emily returning a cheeky grin. “Do you want me to leave so you two can bone?”
“In the car ladies, in the car,” he said, grabbing your shoulders and walking you towards the driver side as Emily got inside. “I apologize for the sassy child.”
“Don’t. I like the sassy child,” you grinned, Beau’s face lighting up.
“Really?” You hummed, Beau turning bashful. “She’s a good kid.”
“Seems that way.” You put your hands in your pockets, inhaling deeply. “Today’s been…”
“I understand.” You glanced back at the cabin, frowning. “You don’t have to go anywhere you don’t want to.”
“I’ve always hated this place.” His large hand interlaced with yours, squeezing the digits. “I don’t want to be alone tonight but I’m not ready for…this yet. I will be but I need to…live a little first. If that makes sense.”
Beau only smirked, a glint in his eyes. “I have an idea.”
Three Weeks Later
“Morning,” said Beau, knocking on the door to the air streamer, aka your new living arrangements for the time being. Beau and Emily had a home built last year after her abduction, something to give her some more stability. With that meant moving his air streamer onto part of the property and having it sit empty for the past six months.
Which meant it was perfect for you to be close to them, you were in town for your new job and you could easily drive to visit your dad at his rehab center. Beau had even offered to let him stay in the house when he got released but thankfully your brother was in contact again and he was going to take dad with him to Seattle where he’d been the past few years.
“Howdy sheriff,” you said as you opened the door, leaning against the door jam. He offered a cup of coffee and your heart fluttered. God, he was so cute how he did that every morning.
“Emily insists on you joining us for breakfast at Donno’s and I couldn’t tell the poor girl no so we’ll be ready to go in fifteen.” He looked up through his lashes, a smidge of cockiness in it.
“Oh, we’re just going in fifteen, huh?” He shrugged, a strong whiff of his scent curling under your nose. Beau licked his lips as you absently scratched your neck. “I’m still in my pajamas.”
“You mean my pajamas,” he said, reaching out, tugging on the end of the oversized shirt that you’d taken from his room last night. Your stomach jumped as his knuckles grazed your bare skin, Beau stepping up into the airstream, making you walk back. A large hand rested gently on your hip, thumb stroking the skin lightly under the fabric of his shirt. “I had fun last night.”
“Me too.” You placed your hands on his chest, grinning up at him. “From what I’ve gathered, true mates bond immediately most of the time so I really appreciate you being patient-”
“Whoa,” he said, taking your arms in his hands, running them up to your shoulders. “Let’s get something clear, darlin’. You will never thank me for respecting your wishes and doing the right thing. You’re owed those things and sweetheart, I will wait as long as you need me to.”
“I never met anyone like you before.”
“Good,” he chuckled, leaning down and letting you press your lips to his. “Take as much time as you need to get ready.”
“I just need a few,” you said, reluctantly letting him pull away. “Hey Beau?”
“Hm?”
“Do you think I lost ten years of my life? Because I let my dad convince me the world wasn’t safe?” He pursed his lips, leaning back against the small counter.
“There certainly was a spike in violent crimes those first six months. There was a lot of fear. We went into a lockdown, loosened restrictions as the science caught up. Emily was homeschooled that first year and I barely let my ex leave the house. But we figured out that the evil bastards that’d do those sorts of things were always the type of people to do those things. It’s like how-”
“You’d love to bite my bond gland and so would I deep down but you’re not jumping my bones to do it because that’s not the kind of guy you are,” you interjected. He smiled softly. “It’s hard to feel like I didn’t lose time, you know?”
“I understand that perspective. But…I didn’t move here until just last year and there was a lot going on with that camping disaster and Emily and my ex and I wasn’t ready for you either until recently. This is how and when we were meant to find each other. We’re soulmates, we didn’t lose any time at all.” He reached out a hand and cupped your cheek. You nuzzled it, placing your hand over top. “I thought you had to get ready.”
“I do,” you said, closing your eyes. “My heat’s coming up soon. I like you being here.”
“Stay in the house with me when it starts. It’ll help.” He kissed your forehead, a strong sense of calm washing over you. “Don’t take too long, omega.”
“I’ll be right there, Alpha. Promise.”

"Easy Beau," Y\N said as she helped him step into the patio that led to his front door. "You don't want to push yourself too hard and end up right back in the hospital."
"I'm fine sweetheart," Beau insisted, "it's my shoulder that's fucked up not my legs."
"Don't be stubborn Beau, you heard what the doctor said, as the suppressant shot wears off you could feel lightheaded, and you're still pretty weak."
She should have known by now that scolding Beau would do no good. The man was stubborn to a fault, but he was also stronger than she gave him credit for.
"You sure you're okay staying here darlin," Beau questioned as she helped him unlock the door. "We can go to your place to do this if you're more comfortable."
Y\N helped Beau sit down on his sofa, she was pretty sure neither of them wanted to venture to the bedroom yet. Seeing as the last time they were in there she was giving him chest compressions.
"It's fine Beau, doctor said you'd probably come off of the suppressant faster if you were in a more familiar environment, besides, it might make the claim go easier if you're somewhere you feel safe and familiar."
Beau sighed heavily and sat deeper into the sofa.
"I'd never hurt you, Omega. You should know that by now."
"I do know that," Y\N insisted as she locked the door and moved to sit next to Beau on the couch. "But physically you have been through a lot of shit, and I want this to be as stress free as possible."
Beau nodded but she could tell by the disgruntled look on his face he was nowhere near satisfied and there was something bothering him. She didn't know quite what yet, but when he was ready, he would let her know. If he was going to be her Alpha, she had to learn to trust him. She knew that wasn't going to be easy, but like Jenny said, what in life worth having ever was. The almost two weeks she'd spent in the hospital getting to know Beau while he recovered told her he was definitely worth every bit of baggage and emotional damage. He was a good man. Despite everything he'd been through.
"I wish they would have never given me those shots in the hospital to suppress my rut. I know they had to, but I hate the way they make me feel."
Y\N helped him remove his jacket and knelt down in front of him to help him out of his boots and socks.
"It is almost like being asleep, and you know subconsciously you need to go to the bathroom, and you're dreaming about needing to go, but in your dream, you can't seem to find a place to go. It's tormenting."
Y\N stood, Beau's boots still in hand as she pondered his analogy. It wasn't one she would have used herself, but she could see where it would be the most accurate one.
"Well, I guess that's one way to describe it," she admitted after a few minutes.
"Oh, come on, you can't tell me that's never happened to you!" Beau voiced as he watched her strip her own jacket and shoes.
"I mean, yeah, I guess," she chuckled to herself. "I would have just never thought to use it as an actual analogy."
It felt almost normal between, easy even and that was an improvement to where they were the last time, they had found themselves at Beau's trailer.
Beau shuffled himself deeper into the sofa and released a long show breath.
"I wish there was something I could do to make it wear off faster, cause you look miserable," Y\N admitted as she sat down next to him. "You look like you're trying not to crawl out of your skin."
Beau's eyes drifted towards the small picture in the frame that sat next to the couch. It was a picture of himself and his daughter.
"Everything's gonna change for me again," he admitted, "and I don't even know what to tell my baby."
Y\N swallowed thickly. When it came to things like this, it was all new to her. Beau had warned her that he came with a ready-made family. She knew what she was walking into. That didn't make it any less confusing, or scary.
"She's not a baby anymore Beau. I mean sure, she's your baby. But she is also a smart, beautiful young lady who would probably rather her dad to be open and real with her, instead of treating her like a child."
Beau sat there for a while and thought about it, and for a moment, she thought that she’d made him angry. Then he softened.
“You’re right, I know you’re right, but it’s hard for me to make that transition between talking to her like a child and talking to her like an adult that she’s becoming. She’s been through so much with her mother and herself, I don’t want to put her through any more heartache.”
Y/N could understand that, even though he had never had children, she could see how that would be a hard transition, especially considering all they had been through as a family.
“If you want me too, I’ll be there with you when you talk to her,” Y/N offered, but Beau just shook his head no.
“That might not be a good idea. I think she would prefer hearing it from me alone.”
Y/N nodded, determined to not let it get to her. “I just want you to know that I’m here for you.”
“I have a tough time, ya know, learning to let people in, let them help me, and I know that, but I hope you don’t think I’m pushing you away at all.”
“I don’t think that Beau, I know that this isn’t going to be easy, and I’m more understanding than you give me credit for.”
“Enough with the heavy for the night,” Beau voiced, suddenly stopping the conversation mid-stream. “I don’t have to wear that fucking sling anymore, and I can move my arm now. How about we just go lay down in bed and be close to each other for a while. Just be together without all the heavy drama and shit?”
Y/N had to agree, it did feel a lot like since the moment they met, there was some sort of drama and things going on around them. It would be nice to not deal with that for once, and just let the chips fall wherever they may, because it did seem like the more, they tried to fix things around them, the worse things always seemed to get. So, Beau’s suggestion wasn’t deflecting, It was more suggesting to just, for now, let shit go.
“I actually kinda like that Idea,” Y/N admitted, grabbing the hand that Beau had extended to her, and standing with him to follow him into the small bedroom of the trailer.
That’s when the nerves really started to hit her and take their toll. Her stomach churned slightly. She was always afraid that even though they’d already crossed the sex boundry together, and even though they had both seen one another naked, there was always that fear that he’d just openly reject her, or suddenly decide he didn’t like what he saw, even though the blood test said they were true mates. When it comes to a man as attractive as Beau Arlen, it was hard not to be self-conscious, and nitpick at every little personal imperfection.
Beau let go of her hand long enough to strip himself down to his boxers and climb into bed to hold the covers up for her to follow suit. She hesitated, but only for a moment before she quickly stripped herself down to her bra and panties.
As soon as she made her way next to him under the covers, he pulled her carefully into his arms, minding his still tender shoulder, and buried his face in her hair, allowing her to be completely wrapped up in everything that was Beau Arlen, the warmth of his skin against her own, his scent, his large hands tracing every inch of skin they could reach as he nosed alone her scent glands, allowing himself to breathe her in as deep as he possibly could manage.
There was a safety there, a comfort she’d never really experienced before. The beginning of a bond that went deeper than sex, because really, mating was just a small part of the Alpha and his Omega. Really, it was about KNOWING one another. It was about knowing every freckle that dusted his skin, it was about knowing every touch that made her shiver as his calloused hands ghosted over her skin. It was about knowing the security and comfort one another could find when everything else around them seemed so cold and so cruel.
It was easy, laying there like that, getting to know his scent, and letting him get to know her own. It was natural, and for the first time since all this started, she had a small glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe this was going to work out between them after all, and maybe, just maybe, they really were meant to be.
Y/N’s fingers trailed their way through his hair, and down the skin of his neck until she felt a small, raised section of skin like a scar that stopped her musing, and she immediately sat up to see what it was, afraid that he was sick again, or something was wrong, like it always was but she could only find a small scar there, one that looked much like a small burn where an Omega would have their mating gland, and she traced it curiously.
“When an Alpha’s rejected by his Omega, we scar too, even though we don’t have a claiming mark necessary, or even a bonding gland the way you do, it still burns us, we go through the same hurt and sickness when the bond breaks,” Beau explained, and for a second, she felt like her whole world had crushed her. It made a fresh wave of hatred boil in her gut towards Carla. She’d hurt him, not only emotionally, but physically as well.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that Beau,” she said, attempting to swallow down her anger, but Beau just pulled her back down into his arms, and wrapped her tighter to him in the blankets.
“It’s okay, I survived it, not all Alphas are so lucky. Besides, if she wouldn’t have pushed me away, I might have never found you, and then I would have just been miserable my whole life, her too, because she was tied to someone that was not her Alpha. It was meant to happen the way it happened. At least I still have my baby girl out of it, and that’s all that matters. At the time it was a reason to live, had I known you were out there, maybe it wouldn’t have hurt so bad.”
Y/N snuggled down into his hold and held onto him a little tighter. She couldn’t reverse the damage that had been done to him, but she could make the memory bearable, and that was something she wasn’t going to mad about, she’d just have to try her best to make it better this time around.

She didn’t remember calling the ambulance. She didn’t remember doing CPR on him. She didn’t remember any of it. All she remembered doing was screaming. She thought she had lost him, and honestly, for a moment, the paramedics thought she might have. Had she not been doing CPR on him she would have lost him permanently. When they got to his trailer, along with a panicked Jenny, his fever was 105 degrees F.
She vaguely remembered that Jenny was the one who pulled her away from him so that the paramedics could get to work.  There were multiple people all around her that were telling her that she saved his life, but honestly, she felt like she’d killed him, all because all the times he’d tried to tell her why he’d brought the pill that morning, she wouldn’t listen to him, and now, it’d escalated to this.
“Sweetie, you need to calm down,” Jenny said, handing her a cup of coffee that Y/N took with shaking hands, but didn’t even bother drinking. “He’s gonna be okay, but he’s gonna need you in one piece when he’s allowed to see you again. You’re no good to him if you’ve given yourself a nervous breakdown.”
“This is all my fault Jenny!” Y/N whisper yelled at the blonde woman sitting next to her. “If I would have just listened to him, let him tell me what his intentions were, but no, I had to be bull headed and stubborn, and now this.”
“Y/N, you heard what that paramedic told you, and I swear to God that doctor is gonna spend time in federal prison over this! Rut, or Rut Fever did not cause his fever. He’s sepsis. He has an infection. Is he in rut right now, yes, but it’s from being in close quarters with his True Mate without consummating the claim. They even did the blood test to prove it when you both got here. Rut Fever doesn’t get that high, even when they’re feral. That doctor is a sick fuck who lied and neglected him and refused to treat him. Nothing you and Beau did, or didn’t do, caused this.”
Y/N wanted to believe her, she really did. But it was hard, because she’d believed the doctor so completely, even if it was subconciously. It had made sense at the time. Just when they’d agreed to fix it. It all went so wrong again. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.
“I want to see him,” Y/N said for what was the thousandth time. He was critical when they’d gotten to Beau’s trailer, so the ambulance wouldn’t let her ride with them to the hospital. Every time she closed her eyes all she saw his limp body laying on that gurney as they carried him out of his trailer. It was an image that would haunt her nightmares for years, and years, to come.
“When I went and asked how he was doing just now the nurse said that his temp was coming down, and that he was stable and resting comfortably. As soon as his fever is under complete control, and he’s awake, they will come and get us to let us see him,” Jenny assured her, but Y/N felt like it was taking too long, and rightfully so, she had some serious trust issues with doctors at the moment.
“What if he doesn’t want to see me?” she questioned, and Jenny dead panned.
“The rut hormone is still very present in his system,” Jenny argued. “He is gonna wanna see you. Hell, when he’s ready to get out of here, he’s got to go with you if he wants to leave as long as the hormone is present. Which, from what I’m told, will be present until he claims you.”
Y/N nodded, looking down at the dark liquid in the cup she still clutched untouched between her hands.
“That’s what’s bad about this biology we have,” Jenny continued. “Sometimes, our genetics, fate, whatever you wanna call it chooses for us. If he doesn’t claim you, or if he claims you, and you reject him, yes, eventually he will go feral and it will kill him. He knows that. You know that. But what happened tonight had nothing to do with any of that. He’s nowhere near feral.”
“Yeah, well, maybe biology got it wrong, cause it doesn’t really feel like Beau and I were meant to be. Every time we get close to fixing this shit, or one another, everything goes south in a hurry,” Y/N revealed, and Jenny nodded thoughtfully next to her.
“You know, nothing worth having is ever gonna come easy, and I promise you, that man laying in there on that hospital bed is worth fighting for. He’s a stubborn, bullheaded Alpha, he talks too damn much. He tends to put his foot in his mouth. But that man in there loves hard, and I always knew he'd be a good Alpha for whatever woman is lucky enough to have him. You guys are meant for each other, or it wouldn't be so damn hard.”
Somewhere deep down, Y/N knew Jenny was right. She knew it. Still, sitting there alone in that hospital room, her ‘Alpha’ was very, very, sick, and she couldn’t see him. She felt like life had totally bottomed out from under her.
“Ms. Y/L/N?” A voice sounded from the door, and Y/N stood up so fast her head spun slightly, with Jenny hot on her heels.
“Yes! That’s me!”
“Your Alpha is asking for you. He’s awake and won't calm down until his Omega is with him. He’s in a deep rut, and is very agitated,” she explained as she led the way down the hallway of rooms and random room numbers that Y/N wasn’t paying attention to.
“How’s the fever?” Y/N questioned, and the nurse came to a stop in front of a door with the number 11 on it.
“Down to 99.8,” she informed her, and Y/N literally breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’m sorry,” the nurse turned to Jenny, who was standing right beside Y/N next to Beau’s door. “But because he’s in rut, we can’t allow another Alpha in the room with him right now, the doctor said just his Omega, we don’t want him to get irritated again, and his blood pressure rise.”
Jenny nodded knowingly before turning to the Y/N. “Let me know how he’s doing. I’ve got to go back to the station.”
Y/N tried to attempt a smile, but it failed somewhere on her face, her mind was too heavy to smile. She had no idea what she was walking into with Beau, and now she had to walk into it alone. Sure, she wanted to see him, but she didn’t know if she was as ready to face him as she thought she was.
The nurse opened the door, and Y/N stepped inside as it closed tightly behind her. Beau was laying on the bed, arm propped up on pillows instead of in a sling, IV’s and machines seemed to be hooked to him, and she was pretty sure one of those was a dialysis machine, and her heart dropped to her feet. Had his kidneys failed too?
Beau, hearing the door close, turned to look at her standing here, and reached for her with his good arm and her heart shattered. He looked pathetic. It was hard not to just sit on the floor and cry.
“You scared the hell out of me,” Y/N admitted as she made her way to his bedside, and he quickly grabbed her hand on his own, holding onto it tightly.
“I scared the fuck out of myself too,’ he admitted. “Apparently that doctor we saw earlier is a quack, and damn near killed me all because he was pissed you weren’t walking around with my claim on your neck.”
Y/N nodded, looking off out the window as a sudden realization dawned on her.
“Yeah… Jenny said she was headed back to the station, but I got a feeling she might be going to rip that doctor’s throat out.”
Beau chuckled to himself. “Most likely.”
“I’m sorry Beau, I feel like this is all my fault.”
“It’s not,” he answered quickly. “The doctor said most likely they either didn’t clean the wound well enough, or there is a fragment of bullet left behind that caused an infection that got into my bloodstream and into my kidneys. The fever from the infection brought on a seizure that brought on respiratory destress. You had nothing to do with that sweetheart, that was that idiot doctor’s fault. As soon as they get the infection under control, they’re going to put me under and take a deeper look at the wound, probably tomorrow, and I’ll be fine.”
Beau grimaced and looked away from her. She panicked, and reached for the nurses button, but he stopped her.
“I’m okay, It’s just my rut,” he said. It’s just really hard not to pull you down here with me right now,” he admitted with a dark laugh.
“I don’t think the hospital staff would appreciate that,” she voiced, and Beau just rolled his eyes.
“You know, in Texas, when an Alpha is deep in rut as I am right now, they give the Alpha and their Omega a private room so that they can handle what they need to handle without being interrupted.”
“Beau,” she said, narrowing her gaze at him. “I don’t think that you’re physically able to knot anyone right now.”
Beau growled under his breath, and she had a feeling that if she would have understood whatever he was saying it would have pissed her off, so she left it alone. Alphas tend to be more than a little on the filthy side of the gutter when they’re in rut, and that usually means comments that were slap worthy. It was the first time she’d seen Beau like this since she’d picked him up from the hospital, which meant he was feeling better.
“Well, will you at least come lay up here next to me?” He pleaded, and he looked so fucking pathetic, she didn’t want to tell him no. He had a way of pulling a puppy dog face that would just melt her and she was pretty sure he knew what he was doing, but he looked so down and pathetic she didn’t want to scold him for it.
“What if I hurt you?” she asked, and he rolled his eyes dramatically.
“You’re not going to hurt me, Omega,” he insisted. “Just about everything they got hooked up to me is on one side, just... Please?”
“Fine,” she relented, narrowing her lips at him with disdain, but he didn’t seem to mind, judging by the victorious smirk on his lips. “But if we get yelled at, you’re explaining to them it was your idea.”
“As freaked out as everyone was when I got here, I’m pretty sure I could get away with murder,” he revealed as she settled herself next to him, and as soon as she touched him, she watched as his body visibly relaxed next to her. Apparently having her close really did help, he wasn’t lying about that.
“How long have you been awake?” She questioned, and Beau sighed as he nosed around her hair, attempting to catch her scent the best he could in his weakened and somewhat incapacitated state.
“‘Bout thirty minutes, I think. The doctor pissed me off, and that’s when they came to get you.”
“What happened?” she questioned, suddenly curious.
“Well, he threatened to call Alpha protective services because I was in a deep rut, and you were walking around without a claim mark on your neck. He asked if you were the reason you weren’t claiming, if you were fighting the claim, and I snapped.”
Y/N sat up suddenly very angry. “Why the fuck are these doctor’s stuck on that?! I swear to God! So what, you’re in rut, and I’m not claimed! Did they ever think that maybe the fact that you’ve been, oh, I don’t know, shot, septic, and nearly died as a damn good reason as to WHY I haven’t been claimed!”
Y/N looked down to find Beau smirking proudly, and she would have slapped him had he been in better physical shape.
“He didn’t ask that until after he explained to me that I was sick, and not dying of rut fever. I think he was just concerned that I even thought that, and assumed you were fighting the claim. After I nearly bit his head off and told him what happened at the rapid care clinic, and that we were about to carry out the claim when I blacked out and had a seizure, then kinda stopped breathing, he changed his tune.”
“Wait, that was a seizure?” Y/N questioned, and Beau nodded.
“Apparently, the fever caused a seizure, the seizure caused me to go into respiratory distress, and then the ambulance showed up. If you weren’t doing CPR on me, I probably wouldn’t be here, or I’d be braindead.”
Y/N shuttered, and held Beau a little tighter, or as tight as she could without hurting him. She didn’t like to even think about what happened, or almost happened to him. It made her sick to her stomach. She came so close to losing him. She still somehow felt as though it was her fault.
“When we get out of here, I’m going to finish what we started, the right way,” he promised, nuzzling into her hair and leaving little kisses to the top of her forehead.
He was tired, she could tell he was tired just by looking at him, but he was alive, and that’s all that mattered, they’d worry about the claim when he was better. They would work it out. It didn’t matter, as long as he was still here and breathing, that’s all that mattered.
“Sleep Alpha, I’ll be here when you wake up, they’d have to arrest me to get me out of the bed, and considering who you are, I don’t think that the arrest is likely.”
“It would be funny for them to call Jenny to have her arrest you though, kinda hot too.”
“Don’t push it Alpha,” she warned, and he chuckled to himself, no longer able to keep his eyes open as the amount of drugs and pain medication they gave him started to take its toll.
Maybe when they got out of here, then he could claim her like he should have done the night she’d shown up at his trailer. Then maybe, just maybe, this hell would be over and they could start their life together…

The weight that sat heavily on Y/N’s chest was almost suffocating as they made their way up the driveway towards Beau’s little trailer. Whether or not she wanted to admit it, even to herself, this place still had the same, homey feel to it that it had the night she pulled up to it when Beau was first in rut.
But even the quaint little homey feel of the atmosphere of the place couldn’t take away from the reality that existed between the Alpha and the Omega that sat in the car as she put it in park.
Beau, aside from asking to go home when they’d gotten in the car had not said a word, he’d just held his phone in his hand, maybe sending a text message or two to who was most likely Emily, and then just sat there staring out of the window next to him.
“You don’t have to stay here and watch this,” Beau said suddenly as she killed the engine, and turned slightly to face him. “I’ll make sure I’ll leave a note, so when they find me, they will know it was my call to come back here, and they won't be able to pin anything like neglecting your Alpha on you.”
Y/N sat there with her throat damn near closing in on itself, the crushing weight she’d felt earlier became all that more heavy with the reality of JUST what he’d planned to do. One way or another, whether it be going Feral and the fever killing him, or by his own hand, he didn't plan to live through this.
“I’m sorry you got pulled into all of this in the first place,” Beau continued. “It was never my intention to hurt you. It was never my intention to ruin your life. It was never what I wanted to do. I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted to drag you into this shit with me, and you shouldn’t have to be subjected to sit and watch me die.”
“Beau, no—”
“It’s okay, you don’t have to pretend,” Beau interrupted her as he placed a shaking hand on the door of the car, but this time when she placed her hand on his thigh, he didn’t jerk away. “I didn’t give you a whole lot of reasons to like me. True Mates or not. I can’t ask you to jump in here and fix this. I made this mess. I have to lie down and die in it. It’s only fair.”
“Fuck fair Beau,” she yelled at him, and he flinched back slightly as if she’d burned him. “I don’t give a damn what you deserve, I”m not just gonna let you go into that trailer and die!”
Beau opened his mouth to argue, but grimaced as he instead, bringing his hand up to his head as if to block out some sort of blinding pain, and she instinctively reached to support him as he swayed in his seat. His skin was boiling to the touch, she was pretty sure as the night went, it would only get worse, which did NOT leave them a lot of time to sit there in the driveway to work out their multitude of issues.
“Come on, let’s get you inside,” she said, jerking the driver’s side door open, and jumping out of the car to hurry up and open the passenger side door. Beau just looked up at her, completely drained and defeated.
“I mean it Omega go home, you don’t have to stay and watch this,” he pressed, but she just sank down to his level, not missing the harsh smell of rut that suddenly clouded the air between them, making a tense, hard situation that much worse.
“Listen to me Alpha,” she stated, doing her best to hide all the fear and hurt that was welling up in her voice. She could not show weakness, or else this would never work. Beau bared his teeth slightly at the title, and it did cross her mind that he could snap at any moment, but for some reason, she wasn’t afraid of him, more of the repercussions that might come from them mating again if he rejected her. “You might be a few years older than me and stubborn and bullheaded as hell, but I can assure you, I”m just as stubborn and bullheaded, and I don’t run just because an Alpha wants me too. So get the fuck out of the car and into the trailer, or I will call Jenny, and she can help me drag you out.”
Beau’s nostrils flared, but he said nothing, just clumsily clambered to his feet before making his way up to the deck to the mall, metal framed door.
She followed along close behind him, determined to make sure he couldn’t hurry through the door and shut it in her face, cause she thought he might actually try that, but he didn’t, he didn’t even bother trying to close the door. He just stumbled into the trailer, and left the door open for her to follow him in, which made her hope that maybe, just maybe, he hadn’t totally given up yet.
When she got into the trailer, closing and locking the door behind her, she found Beau, sitting on the edge of his bed, with a picture of Emily in his hand, and the family he’d lost.
She didn’t understand it really, why he still clung to the Omega that didn’t want him, that had clearly rejected him. She didn’t know if it was the child that held him to it, but she wanted badly to pull him out of it. Show him that he still had a good bit of life ahead of him. If he’d just open the fuck up and quiet pushing her away, maybe even with her.
Even though he’d rejected her, even though he’d hurt her beyond words, she still didn’t have it in her to think that he was a bad guy. For some reason, whether it was an unintentional bond or what, but she had a feeling he was hiding behind a lot of hurt, but she still really had not seen the REAL Beau Arlen, and she just couldn’t give up on him. Something deep inside of herself just wouldn’t let her. No matter how much she wanted to preserve her sanity. She couldn’t leave him here alone to die.
So she forced her feet to move, and to sit down on the bed next to him. He didn’t even look up at the dip of the mattress, just sighed heavily as he looked down at the photo in his hands. His thick fingers reaching down to trace the photo in his hand as he did so, a drop of dark, red blood fell onto his hand in almost a cruel, poetic gesture.
“Beau, you need to lay down,” she voiced as she stood to find a tissue or something to clean the blood up that was slowly dripping from his nose, but he just shrugged and whipped it away on his sleeve as if it didn’t matter.
“Laying down, sitting up, it won't matter either way in a few hours,” he voiced, almost as if their thoughts were connected in some way, and maybe they were, and neither of them realized it.
“Beau you can’t just give up,” she tried, but he just shook his head and sat the picture back down on his bedside table.
“DOn’t really have much of a choice do I?” he questioned, looking down at the blood stain that was now on his sleeve.
“Yes you do,” she argued, and he lifted his gaze to stare at her, his expression and eyes completely unreadable.
“That what you really want? For me to do what instinct is telling me too? Tie you to me? Hmm? A recovering alcoholic and an Alpha that’s WAY past his prime? Someone with a teenage daughter and an ex-wife, who, as long as Emily is alive, will always be in the picture?”
He waited, stared her down, but she didn’t budge, the tension in the air almost palpable between them. She knew he was trying to scare her, but for some reason, she wasn’t afraid. Even though maybe she should have been.
“What about the fact that every day I get up and go into work,” he continued, indicating to his injured shoulder, “that there is a good chance I won't come home alive. Is that something you really, REALLY want to be stuck with? Have you ever seen what happens to an Omega when the Alpha dies, when the bond is broken? It’s not pretty. So no darlin, the way I see it, to keep me from hurting anyone else, dying is the only option I really got.”
“You’re so fucking stubborn,” she said, shaking her head with annoyance.
“Stubborn, selfish, worthless, drunk… I had someone tell me once that at least I was pretty, so I guess there’s that.”
Y/N blinked at him as if she’d been slapped in the face at his little confession, and even though she was gawking, she couldn’t find it in her to care, because she didn’t know how to slap Beau, or whoever told him something like that.
“Who the fuck told you that?” She finally forced herself to ask, and Beau snorted.
“Carla,” he admitted, and the anger rose up in her faster than she thought possible. If she had time, she’d probably drive over to her house and beat her face in, but she didn’t think Beau would live that long, so time wasn’t an option, but when this was over, she and Carla were going to have one hell of a come to Jesus meeting.
“That is such a fucking lie,” she said, and he looked at her as if he was getting tired of this conversation, or maybe he was just deteriorating, and it was getting harder for him to focus.
“You don’t even know me.”
“Only because you won't let me get to know you Beau! You’ve got these walls up that you think is helping everyone else around you, but all you’re doing is killing yourself! I was more than willing to take ALL of that you said when I drove up here a few days ago! YOU were the one that backed out and brought a fucking plan B pill! I don’t care that you're older than me, I don’t care that you’ve had a pup with another woman. So what, you’ve had drinking problems in the past, who doesn’t have their share of issues. So what, your job is dangerous. Beau, I would have been more than glad that you decided to claim me. But you decided you didn’t want me. Not the other way around. I would have been glad to get to know you. Even the ugly parts you didn’t want me to see.”
Beau said nothing, he just sat there, looking at the floor. She wanted to scream at him more, slap him, kick him, do anything to make him move. Make him save himself. She didn’t know how much clearer she had to be to get him to understand that she was in this for the long hall, because, for some reason she didn’t even understand herself, she just couldn’t walk away from him.
“If we do this,” Beau said after a moment, “It’s permanent. There’s no going back. There’s no taking it back. There’s no fixing it.”
Y/N said nothing, she just slipped her sweater off of her shoulders, and pulled her hair up into a tighter messy bun. Beau watched, his eyes taking in every movement she made.
“If I was going to run Beau,” she said as she dropped the sweater on the floor. “Don’t you think I’d have done it by now? I’m not afraid of your job, I’m not afraid of your ex-wife. I’m not afraid of your daughter. The only one that I’m afraid of is you.”
“You have no reason to be afraid of me,” Beau stated, but she couldn’t tell if it was because he was starting to lose it completely, or if it was because he was in pain. “I’d blow my brains out right here before I let myself snap and hurt you.”
“That’s not what I’m afraid of Alpha,” she clarified, and he cocked his head in confusion. “I’m afraid of what your rejection, when you wake up from this rut, and from whatever this fever really is, and figure out again that it’s not what you want, that I’M not what you want, and you pack another pill in here for me to take and send me on my way. I won't live through it this time. It will kill me. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Beau’s eyes shifted around the room as he shook his head furiously, and she thought that just for a second he was going to tell her to get out.
“I wasn’t trying to reject you Omega, I just wanted to give you an out if you wanted it. I didn’t want you to be tied to me if you didn’t want to be, and if you didn’t want me, I’d have let you go, but I also did want to deal with another pup I’d never get to see, so I just had it there as an alternative IF and only IF you wanted it. I would have never made you take that pill. It wasn’t a rejection. I was just trying to give you a choice.”
Y/N’s eyes locked with his, desperate to try and read him. Desperate to try and figure out if he was lying to her to save himself. But she could detect no lies in his green eyes that seemed to be getting dimmer and dimmer by the moment. Just pain. A lot of pain.
“Then why didn’t you claim me?” She questioned directly, and he winced as he tried to sit back against the headboard.
“Because I didn’t think you wanted me too.”
It was such a simple answer, such a simple little thing, one she never would have thought of in a million years, because what Alpha ever cared about what the Omega wanted in the deal. They just took and took until they got what they needed, and nothing more was ever said about it. That’s why she thought he’d rejected her when he hadn’t claimed her. It was a misunderstanding. One that almost killed them both. One that still might kill him. All because he wouldn't communicate when he needed to the most.
Y/N was suddenly desperate to save him. Suddenly determined to fix it. Fix what they’d both stupidly broken, when she stood up and moved closer to him, grabbing his hand that was resting on the side of him in her own. His eyes were closed now, and his mouth opened slightly as his chest heaved with every breath he took. His scent was almost suffocating in the confined space. They were running out of time.
“Then take it Alpha, take what you need, claim me. I’m literally giving you my verbal permission. We can figure out the rest when you live through it. Please.”
Beau forced his head up to look at her that had lulled strangely to his injured shoulder. His face was red. The fever was dangerously high. There was more blood pooling just at the end of his nose, ready to fall at any moment. But he nodded, and tried to sit up, then immediately, as if in some cruel joke by the universe, or maybe both of their own stupidity, his eyes rolled, and his body fell backward onto the bed, limp, and barely breathing.
To Be Continued…..

Tumblr wouldn’t let me tag it guys, I’m sorry. I’ll try rebloging with the tags later tonight, but honestly I’m not hopeful it will let me. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
