A group of us road tripped to the beautiful region of Tirol in the Austrian Alps to watch the Almabtrieb, which translates to Cattle Drive. The herds are rounded up on Alpine pastures and driven 27 km down to the valley.

We stayed in a beautiful town called Rattenberg, which happens to be the smallest town in Austria (not to be confused with a village). It was founded in 1393 and has just over 2000 residents.

We stayed in the heart of it in the Haus Schlosskeller which means House at the bottom of the Castle. This is very literal as it was just below the castle (now in partial ruins but still cool).

Breakfast was traditional Austrian fare and served in this cozy space with a ceiling mural.

We asked for cappuccino and were served black coffee with an entire mug of steamed milk. Surprisingly delicious! The next morning I ordered hot chocolate and it tasted like it was straight from the udder. Good…and bad…at the same time. Haha

The town was built along a river.

The area is also know for its glass production.There were several stores selling a variety of glass products. We stumbled into this one that was built into the mountain and had multiple rooms that felt cave-like.
