okay so ,, i watched the first season in 4 days. in my defense, it’s the short season! and i get it, i get why the show popped off culturally like it did, i get why baby phil was obsessed, i get why all my friends have been telling me for two decades to watch it

it’s dripping in nostalgia, and whedon, and even though this is my first time watching there was just So Much that felt familiar. i adored the styling, the slang, the soundtrack! many people had warned me beforehand that season1 feels weak compared to the others, that the show hadn’t yet found its footing and that the tech wasn’t quite up to par yet, but i’ll say i didn’t get that vibe? maybe i’ll know what y’all meant when i actually get into other seasons but i do think season1 did the opposite of disappoint.

1️⃣first segment: “oh hey, i know them!”

the obvious ones first, the ones i knew before watching—

buffy, “oh hey, it’s daphne!”

willow, “oh hey, it’s lily from himym!”

angel, “oh hey, it’s booth from ‘bones’!”

but now the unexpected visits—

joyce, “oh hey, it’s the neighbors’ mom from ‘honey i shrunk the kids’!”

hank, “oh hey, it’s almonzo wilder from “little house on the prairie’!”

marcie ross, “oh hey, it’s georgina from “girl interrupted’!”

loved seeing some familiar faces, they’re babies😭 (except for almonzo, who is older than i ever saw him lol)

2️⃣next segment: “ooh.... aged poorly, didn’t it”

the big one, for me, was xander. like ,, the everything about him. i told cal when i was about 3eps in that i had no middle ground when it comes to xander and i still stand by that— sometimes i love him with my whole heart and want to keep him safe, and sometimes my gag reflex is failing me, and it all depends on the specific scene tbh. the actor is the saving grace, i think, as a lot of his more endearing moments come straight out of portrayal. but just ,, a lot of his banter is uncomfortable at best, and this will-they-won’t-they triangle of willow digs xander who digs buffy is tiring. i’m rather sure it’s dropped right? anyways i hope it’s dropped soon. and i hope the Nice Guy™️ schtick softens so that i can love xander entirely like i very much want to do

3️⃣final segment: “oh, that’s different than cultural osmosis led me to believe.....!”

the “surprise” reveal that angel was a vampire aldkfjs i don’t know why, i just thought that was clear from his introduction in the pilot? he acted very vampirey from the get-go, but i’m guessing that i just figured that bc i knew already that buffy has a habit of falling for her (in)mortal enemies

final thoughts: i really enjoyed the first season. i’m crowning my highlight as willow— my baby gay heart could not have handled watching this show when it came out, i’m already spending every scene she’s in just full heart-eyes! fav episode i’m crowning the two-parter pilot, and best twist goes to the dummy in ep9 being a demon slayer.

it doesn’t seem physically possible for me to get through season2 as quickly, considering it’s twice as long, but i’ll make another post whenever i do finish it so wish me luck😘✌️
