#allthebrightplaces #allthebrightplacesmovie it used to be an entirely revolutionary act to write stories mental illness, depression and suicide for young adults, which made its readers impressionable, woke and brave. that is, until books of these sort became a dime a dozen, and the very issues that made such stories special became punchlines and mere selling points. personally, after picking up a few of these, I stopped. not to devalue the very real struggle, especially in the young, or the need to talk about it, but more the realization that there will always be better and more sensitive ways to explore these issues. I've known of this book, but for this reason, I haven't picked the book up. I've even resisted watching this movie. I gave in today, blindly, and I surprisingly liked it. considering, u still believe there are better ways to talk about these sensitive topics, and that this should have come with explicit trigger warnings. now, this is sold as a love story, how young romances are sold, which is fine, it reeled us in. but this is more than just love making things better, love opening people up. it's about the savor syndrome - how people who struggle are made better by saving other people. it's about blindspots, and how people who benefit from the act of saving fail to see the real impending tragedies of their saviors. making the title a maddeningirony. I have half the mind to wish there wasn't a death, but I suppose that's the point. the unfairness and ugliness of that death somehow made this stand out. it never romanticised, or exploited the death and the descent. justice smith and elle fanning made this a more compassion filled viewing experience. their chemistry is the bright place of this movie. they are life affirming joys to watch onscreen. now, I hear people who have read the book complaining about this adaptation? I haven't read it and as far as I am concerned, as a stand alone movie, it's pretty amazing. I wanted more though, and that's probably a good thing? it doesn't force emotions. it simply allows feeling. beautiful visuals and writing should not distract from the ugliness, urgency, and impotrance of the heart of this movie. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9qpdfPDLFg/?igshid=czgenzlptqyx
