Hello everyone, and thanks for your patience! We have had some changes with the Winterfest Gift Exchange due to the retirement of the core team of peksies at @winterfest-gift-exchange. They ran a great event that is responsible, at last count, for close to 20% of the fanworks posted on AO3 over the years, which is an incredible accomplishment. @whatevsbla and @alloysius-g have earned their peksie pensions so please congratulate them on their many years of dedicated service.

Myself, @gwenllian-in-the-abbey (you might recall I joined the previous team last year!) and @wolveshavenokings are re-launching Winterfest, and with new management comes a new blog! You might know the two of us from the Robin Hobb discord server, where @wolveshavenokings is the owner and I am one of the admins. In addition, we have @divine529 , @halcyonhowl and @dandelions-and-white-wolves on the Winterfest team! Although it is not required at the moment, we encourage you to join the discord server if you are interested in participating, as we will use it as a major tool for communication and coordination.

Due to the changes, our dates have been pushed back slightly this year. What follows is the revised timeline for the 2024 gift exchange (yeah, we're still calling it the 2024 gift exchange even though the gifts will be revealed when it is technically 2025).

Important Dates for 2024-25:

Sign ups close: December 1st at midnight EST

I am so glad quality isn't necessary when it comes to comfort because this and my favourites list is kind of different.

Spirited Away

This movie is just so beautiful to look at. When I think of comfort I think about the train scene or when Chihiro is at Zeniba's home. There are so many calm scenes in this movie and even the conflict is solved with no action. It's just people talking and trying to understand each other and themselves and I love it so very much.

2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

When I think of comfort I also think of the Shire. Oh how I wish I lived there. This movie is just so wholesome. I love when a group of people has to work together towards a common goal and I love the bonding moments. It is my favourite movie of the trilogy and one of my favourite movies in general, even though the lack of Smeagol is upsetting since he is my favourite character.

3. Pride

This movie just fills my heart with such tender feelings. I laugh, I cry and I always end with a little hope.

4. The Princess Bride

This has got to be the most quoteable movie of all time. Full of tropes, it's just a fun adventure that makes me laugh and feel relaxed.

5. Now You See Me

Remember when I said I liked when a group of people comes together for a common goal? Yeah. Plus, this is a movie full of tricksters! Honestly, they were just waving a delicious toy in front of me and saying pssss psss psss with this one. I still remember having watched this in the cinema and wanting the sequel to be named Now You Don't. I was really upset when that wasn't the name. I own this in DVD and now I want to go rewatch it so I hope this answers all the questions.

6. Hot Fuzz

Everytime I rewatch this movie I notice something new. This is another movie that never fails to make me laugh and it's also a great friendship story.

7. The Road to El Dorado

Me and a former friend from my teens used to quote this movie all the time (in portuguese). This is one of the movies I know all the lines and it annoys my other friends to no end when they attempt to watch it with me. Very fond memories connected with this one.

8. Pride and Prejudice

Just looking at Mr. Bingley's face makes me smile. Yeah, yeah, I am not on the Mr. Darcy camp. I like my men cute, kind hearted and a little dumb. Enough said. (This movie also looks beautiful)

9. Song of the Sea

This seemingly simple story about conflicting family relationships resonated so much with me. Besides that, like Spirited Away, it is gorgeous to look at. This is probably my favourite movie in terms of visuals. I love the shapes, I love the colors, I love the sountrack!

10. 10 Things I Hate About You

I possibly related to Kat way too much in my teens. This teen movie improved the Shakespeare play that inspired it.

However Many Sentences Whatever Day it Currently is

Thanks to @theothermaidoftarth and @emilykaldwen for tagging me, I've had to administer standardized testing this week and I'm also busy trying to edit the next chapter of OFCIR so I'm just now getting to this and I changed the name because who can keep up with what day of the week it is but you know, I thought I'd share another snippet of my original fiction this time since AKAB recently updated and OFCIR is going to be updated very soon and we've teased the upcoming chapter a lot already. This is a snippet from the first chapter of my novel, which is finished in fact, but for a rewrite of the final few chapters.

Even though I ached so much I thought I could not walk a step more, I went out behind our house to the shared courtyard with the communal well and with my skinny little boy arms pulled the well bucket up and poured the contents into a clay pitcher for drinking water and brought the pitcher inside with only minimal sloshing. I took it, and a clay cup, to my mother’s bedside. The room had the tangy smell of sweat and illness, but I did not care about that, it was my mother’s room, and a safe place. My mother looked at me and she gasped, sitting up in bed. I swallowed back my tears, not wanting to show my mother how my face and ribs ached.

“Come here,” she said, and I obeyed her. She touched my face, wiped away a tear, and I winced as her hand brushed the tender skin, broken open by adult fists. “Who did this?” She asked.

Her voice was not tender, it was hard and angry, and I realized she feared my father had beaten me. He had not. My father, for all his faults, was not then a man who beat his children bloody. He punished us in a way that was common in Sarikol, especially in our neighborhood, cuffing our ears or paddling our bottoms over our clothes. Nor was he the only father who came home drunk and hurled things— a cushion, a plate, his pipe— at his children. In those days, I never thought of my father as particularly cruel, but I knew him for a bully too. My father’s preferred weapon was his sharp and clever tongue. When I say I feared him, I should say I feared the ways he might make me feel small and unworthy. So it surprised me that my mother might suspect him of doing this to me.

“It was a man from the market,” I said. “He chased me and caught me.”

My mother shook her head. She did not suspect that the man might have chased me for some foul purpose, for she knew that my father’s own purposes had likely set me in his path. “You robbed him?”

I nodded silently. I had nothing to say to that. I had done it, even if I hadn’t wanted to. My mother heaved a sighed then she coughed, hiding her face in her arm. “I will speak to your father,” she said. “You are to do it no more, Ziya.” She took me by the shoulders, remarkably strong for a woman in her state. Her skin was sallow and her brown eyes, eyes just like mine, were fever-bright. “Do you hear me? Swear it Ziya. It is too dangerous, and besides I would not have my sons turn into thieves. Swear it to me.” She shook me a little, gently, and I sucked in a breath at the pain. My mother frowned.

“I promise,” I said, because I would have promised anything my mother asked of me. I loved her much more than I feared my father.

Become What You Fear

Will is such an underrated character that some people (not giving names) even forget about him but this fic shows how fascinating, terrifying and powerful he really is. Everyone’s characterisation is on point and the Skill dreams passages in particular are chilling.

“Show yourself,” I said intently.

And he did. It was like he’d stepped straight out of the furnishings; a completely new addition to my reality. My nightmares rarely showed me his face. He was a monster hiding in a child’s room when it was dark, a snake lying in wait in the grass. And when they did, it was usually the deathly grimace of his corpse.

The man before me was neither. He still had an eyepatch and all of his limbs. No, I noticed upon looking closer. He had no actual skin. His entire body was made of blackened stone. It called to me, drew me in like the fabled vortex to El’s depths that no ship could ever escape. He was hunger made man.

“Like what you see?” he asked, his voice velvet-soft and dangerous. I had forgotten its deceptively lilting cadence.

“There is no place for you here,” I told him, remembering the sensation of his shaking, dying body under my steady hands. “You no longer belong in this world.”

Will smiled, a slow unfurling of his charred lips. “Is that so? Then you shouldn’t have invited me in.”
