all of derry girls prompts are so good ahh hmm 22 waltzing back
it took me more than a minute to get to this one, @allineedisabook-18, but it's nice and long!
this ask is in reference to this fic writing ask game from a little while ago - prompts based around the cranberries song titles. the prompt is waltzing back.
set post-smoke break by about a year, includes mentions of erin's post-smoke break boyfriend, liam, who you can read more about here.
“It’s just like you, to come waltzing back at the worst time,” Michelle complained at him on the phone.
“You told me weeks ago I could come visit this weekend,” James huffed back at her. He’d only meant to call and make sure he didn’t need to take a cab from the airport when he flew into Belfast from London, and now Michelle was asking if he had anywhere else he could stay. He really should have suspected it wouldn’t be so simple.
“Aye, but that was before I got the Belfast Empire gig, so…”
“Oh my god,” he muttered, running a hand wearily down his face. He was glad she couldn’t see him, he was sure of the withering look he’d get from her in return. “Can I sleep on your couch or what? It’s literally not a big deal. I’m not canceling my ticket. So I’m either homeless for the weekend in a city I’ve never been to or sleeping on your couch.”
“Jesus, keep your knickers on. Fine. Just – if you see or hear anything with anyone, no you didn’t.”
“Eugh,” he frowned, repulsed at the thought of seeing or hearing anything or anyone. “Whatever. See you tomorrow.”
“Wait a fucking second – I don’t even get a ‘thanks, Michelle’? First Erin’s been a fucking head melter and won’t shut up about when you get in and what your plans are and how long are you staying, like she can’t just fucking call you up and ask you herself, and then it’s you who isn’t even grateful that I’m giving you – for free, mind you – a place to stay.”
“Erin’s been asking about me?” he asked interestedly, his posture shifting noticeably. He half hated that he’d felt himself sit up straighter at the mention of her name – it wasn’t like that anymore. “We haven’t talked for –”
“Wait a second – I don’t care. Call her if you want to talk about her. I’m done playing cruise coordinator. See you tomorrow, dickhead,” Michelle said, and hung up the phone before he could get a “bye” in.
James frowned down at the receiver as he put the phone back on the hook. It’d been a while since Erin had last rung him up – the weeks seemed to pass too quickly sometimes – and when he had mentioned that he’d be going to Belfast soon on Michelle’s invitation, she’d barely seemed to notice or care.
“Oh,” she’d said. “Ok. When?” and had changed the subject after his answer. He’d felt a surge of annoyance at her response – or lack of it – but figured it was better this way: for her to be disinterested. He could be disinterested, too.
Really, he could be. Erin had lived in Belfast since their first year of uni, but it’d taken Michelle moving into her own flat there that had finally garnered him an invitation to visit. Sure, he could have gone before. He could have asked. But if Erin wasn’t offering, he wasn’t going to push it. Especially not after last year.
Besides, he had a girlfriend and she had a boyfriend now. A boyfriend he’d never met, but had heard in the background of a phone call once or twice. “A fucking gobshite, her Liam,” Michelle had complained more than once, “He’s just so boring. And doesn’t ever shut up.” James had often pretended not to take a certain measure of delight in hearing less than pleasing impressions of Liam, but that’s all it was: pretend.
Had Erin been pretending, too, when she hadn’t seemed to care about his visit?
He felt something flash in his stomach at the thought before dismissing it entirely. It didn’t matter now what Erin pretended to do and not do, or think and not think. All that mattered was what she actually did. James could be disinterested; really, he could be.
He was wholly disinterested when Erin tagged along with Michelle to the airport; and when they stopped off at Erin’s flat and he’d noticed the photo he’d taken of them at the beach the summer when they were in 19 placed carefully on the bookshelf; and when Liam had joined them for dinner and he’d looked nothing like James had imagined – straight close cropped hair and long nose and collared shirt under sweater like he was going to mass instead of a pub. Sort of cute. If you rearranged his face by a few more centimeters, he might even be handsome. Approachable. Reasonable. Unassuming.
Well, great. That would suit Erin just fine. James wasn’t sure what was all that appealing about Liam, but if that’s what Erin wanted…and James didn’t pretend to know what Erin wanted anymore. He’d learned his lesson on that one.
James would have understood if Liam was exceptionally good looking or very funny or even just pleasant to pass the time with. But as it stood, he didn’t actually talk all that much – it came as no surprise to James that Michelle had exaggerated on this point – and when he did, James wondered afterwards why Liam had thought to open his mouth at all. He was sort of boring; Michelle hadn’t been wrong on that point.
It was easy to be disinterested in Liam. Except for the fact that he wouldn’t stop touching Erin. They were eating, for fuck’s sake, and James really didn’t need the pairing of Liam’s hand high up on Erin’s thigh with his shepherd’s pie or Liam playing idly with her hair while Erin blushed as James drank his stout. It was easy to be disinterested except that James couldn’t stop noticing. He hated that he couldn’t stop noticing.
At least Liam had gone home after that. James had half expected Erin to ditch them with the way she’d been sending eyes Liam’s way.
“Have fun!” Liam had said, as they’d turned to go in the opposite direction to Michelle’s flat, holding his hand up in an unmoving wave. James was suddenly reminded of his Uncle Martin, who had perfected the same gesture.
“We will,” James called back, turning away but not before catching the way Liam’s brow furrowed by a centimeter.
“Oh for fuck’s sake,” Michelle muttered under her breath as Erin dashed back to Liam for another kiss.
“Does it always take them this long to leave a fucking pub?” James grumbled back, and they shared an irritated look that told James the answer was likely “yes.”
But as they walked back together, the three of them side by side, each step closer to Michelle’s flat felt like a step away from his annoyance and a step back to 19 – the last summer James had spent in Derry – when they’d done this very walk together from the pub at the end of the night. How many times had they done it? It felt like a hundred – enough that this felt like muscle memory, walking between Michelle and Erin and laughing and catching Erin’s eye on occasion to share a smile.
James could be disinterested, if he really put his mind to it, if he made sure he remembered. Otherwise, it was too easy to forget.

5, 10 & 30 for the artist ask game pretty please!!!!💛💜
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
hmmm. hard to tell. I enjoy low-pressure doodling and sketching so I have a lot of stuff in sketchbooks that I don’t share, or I just share them with a friend or two (mostly silly comics haha). my digital stuff I generally intend to post, although I have a handful of abandoned wips and random doodles there too. tbh I think just overall my volume of work, both posted and unposted, is a lot smaller than other artists
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
dude just like a basic t shirt or something ig dhdjjd im bad at drawing clothes in general and also at clothing folds lol. characters with complicated outfits make me cry but we soldier on
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
maybe my totk doodle dump bc I thought I was being hilarious dhsjsk clowns gotta stay humble 🙏
Thanks for the questions!
