The Alleyway Oracles by Publishing Goblin — Kickstarter
It's time. The Alleyway Oracles are live.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three new decks. The 100-card, mismatched Alleyway Tarot. The 60-card, bright and joyous Oracle of Play. The 60-card, dark and brooding Oracle of Secrets.
Which oracle are you listening to...?

This is a card for the Alleyway Oracles, a sequel to the Alleyman's Tarot coordinated by the badass @PublishGoblin / @DaneAsmund on Twitter. Keep an eye out for more update on it in the weeks to come, I'm insanely excited for it!

My newest toy came in the mail today!
I'm very excited.
This is my second time backing an Publishing Goblin Alleyway deck. My partener and I picked up the OG Alleyway Tarot back in ... whatever the fuck year that was.
I just got it this morning, and so I haven't had a chance to investigate it very thouroughly. As you can see, I got all three decks: the new Alleyway deck, the Oracle of Secrets, and the Oracle of Play, plus the three expansion packs. I got the bank bag, with tarot cloth, coins, and (ugh) fake broken teeth. I got the plastic arcade bag with what looks like some sort of minigame. I got the dice bag with the bronze-colored charms and cool four-way key. And I even got the art prints. I super lucked out, and the day I finally had the cash to back the kickstarter, I was just in time to catch the last-day special.
I'm so excited. There's been a handful of complaints about incomplete packages, so I'll need to do an inventory check against my pledge, just in case, but so far my only complaint is that there's so much fucking shrinkwrap it's not even funny. But that's a super small complaint.
If you want to watch me unbox these, check out the clock app link below. (I tried to upload the video, but it was too big.)

Imagine my surprise to see a reblog that asked if I'll actually pay artists this time! I paid every single artist on the Alleyman's more than we agreed to by the contracts, so it's a bit funny to me that anyone is asking if I paid them at all.
I paid out $209,000 in bonus pay alone to the Alleyman's Tarot artists.
I can confirm that the money actually goes to the artists as it says it will. If there was talk about me not paying people, it involved neither me nor any of the artists. The artists are all fully credited for both the Alleymans and Alleyway Oracles with links to their sites and stores, so you are free to reach out to the artists on the original project to follow up on this.
I would be quite a fool to give full credit and include links to the artists if I wanted to hide the fact that I wasn't actually licensing or paying them. I have a contract with each and every artist here on my computer.
That contract on the new project stipulates:
Tumblr media
Meaning if I chose not to pay the artists that bonus pay that's shared in the stretch goals, the artist could sue me with the contract I wrote as the reason. I go out of my way to protect the artists I work with through contracts I write up, so they have absolute certainty they will make the money I promise.
If you DO want to followup for clarity, I'm happy to give you a full email list of all the artists from the original project, or this new project if you want to confirm the contracts exist I guess. Or if you don't trust me to give you the real emails, you can go to the artist's sites, all fully linked and credited on my website. Just DM me!
If you don't want to followup on this claim though, please stop spreading misinformation that could harm my small business. Thanks!
You asked if the Publishing goblin was going to pay their artists this time, what did you mean by that? Far as I can tell half their stretch goals are unlocking more pay for the artists.
I could be mistaken but I recall some talk of the Alleyman's Tarot not paying some artists last run. (Though it was ages back and I don't have specific names to tie to that) Also a bit of a debate on the licensing rights - if the publisher HAD in fact licensed 100+ cards. I sadly don't have receipts but just feel a general - wariness might be needed. Also - from my past experience - even if a kickstarter SAYS the money is going to pay artists - it doesn't mean it DOES actually get to them.

Crochet time! A little while ago I received my Oracle of Play deck from @publishinggoblin and fell in love with it immediately. I used it to do a reading for a dear friend the day after it arrived, and among other things it's led to us talking more than we have in many years. Given that, and given that its proper box is beautiful but a bit unwieldly for carrying around, I decided to improvise a clutch for it with enough wrap to become a three-card spread cloth.
I used the remains of a ball of Loops & Threads Soft Classic, partially because it's a lovely shade of purple but mostly because the majority of that ball went to making myself an absolutely fabulous pointy witch hat so this seemed like an appropriate use for the rest. The stitch pattern is a moss stitch using half-double crochet instead of single, which resulted in a satisfyingly chunky mesh look, and I found a really cute button at the craft store to use for a closure. Eventually I may even sew on an additional interior pocket on the clutch portion to hold some of the cool coins I got with the deck! I'm also considering making a matching pouch for my Oracle Dice, and maybe even a sleeve to hold the accompanying books for the dice and deck, since I still have a decent amount of this purple yarn left.

Front and back of the Ace of Wands from a hypothetical Sailor’s Tarot deck with scrimshaw inspired designs. It was created for the @publishinggoblin’s upcoming project the Alleyway Oracles.
EDIT: A full Sailor’s Tarot deck will be available for preorder on kickstarter in March, 2025! Check the Sailor’s Tarot tag on my blog for updates!
