31st December
New Year’s Eve
Allendale Tar Barrel Burning. Source: Pinterest uploaded by Catherine Donaldson.
Today is New Year’s Eve. The turning of the year was traditionally marked by fire customs, some of which survive. In Allendale in Northumberland a parade of gaudily-attired Guisers still takes place on the night of 31st December. Shortly before midnight the all-male procession sets out with each Guiser balancing a barrel of burning tar on his head, the conclusion of which results in the barrels being thrown onto a huge bonfire. This is followed by singing and dancing until the midnight bells chime. In Stonehaven in Grampian, the revellers launch fireballs into the air, or whirl the cloth balls, lit by paraffin, around their heads, the balls being attached to them by strings. The whole event is highly dangerous.
These ceremonies are of course memories of pagan practices designed to light the skies in midwinter to encourage the return of the sun in spring. Bonfires were common, and households should keep their New Year fire burning for at least 24 hours to ensure the coming year is a prosperous one. The horse and bull-worship of the ancient Celts was maintained by men dressed in bull hides and horse costumes who visited homes throughout the Christmas season in order to bestow good fortune in return for alms. The Church objected to such blatant pagan survivals and most died out, but on New Year’s Eve the horse-skull totems of Mari Lwyd visit the farmhouses of Wales still, although the tradition may owe as much to old mumming plays as it does to pagan memories.
Bell ringing is a very prevalent Christian-era New Year’s Eve tradition, and the New Year is rung in to this day at midnight by the chimes Big Ben in London.

Ok so the scene in empire of ivory where lord Allendale sees Emily for the fist time and immediately comes to the conclusion that she’s Laurence’s bastard child is hilarious, but it’s also got a good illustration of why Laurence’s conflict with his father is compelling: Lord Allendale is actually a pretty decent guy outside of his disapproval of people not doing things his way.
Like, there’s the abolition thing, obviously. Pretty telling that Laurence disagrees with his father on everything except politics, and wants his advice on Temeraire’s dragon rights campaign. But also in the Emily scene the first thing he does is make sure Laurence was doing right by her with education etc. (which is also where we learn that Temeraire has taken over teaching the runners math lol) and then he offers to help:
“She is a pretty-behaved girl, for her station in life, and I hope she does not want for anything,” Lord Allendale said, in a sort of sidling way. “I am sure if there was any difficulty in finding her a respectable situation, when she is grown, your mother and I would be glad to be of assistance.”
Which is of course only the proper thing to do when faced with an illegitimate grandchild, but too much of the series is about how the vast majority of the English do not in fact live up to their own considerations of what’s proper to dismiss Lord Allendale actually doing it.
It really makes the whole conflict more interesting, that it’s not Laurence pining after the approval of a father that never deserved it, but rather a totally understandable desire for acknowledgment from someone whose esteem did actually mean something.
#the kitten rambles#temeraire#lord Allendale is sort of the inverse of Riley#Laurence agrees with him but doesn’t *like* him#whereas Riley he likes but doesn’t agree with

First marathon complete ✅️ obvs we walked bc it was over fells and moors and bogs and was very very hilly but 26 miles is 26 miles!! I'm so proud of us 🤩
Here we are at the start line, 8am, bright eyed and bushy tailed
A rainbow on the other side of the first v steep, v rainy hill
The middle 10 miles or so were straight over the moors.. after the wettest March in 42 years.. so everything was so unbelievably boggy and saturated and unstable and sinky. People were just scrambling around the fells trying to find any remotely stable ground to walk on 😂
Of course someone was always going to fall into the bog.. that someone was me. I was the Bog Victim of our group. Full on Vicar of Dibley style, the ground just disappeared from under me. It was up to my chest and so so cold and stinky and disgusting. Thankfully that wasn't long before the halfway checkpoint so I was able to change into dry pants at least. Boggy knickers were not pleasant 🤣
2 more miles of bogs up to the highest point at 15 miles, then the last 11 miles on actual tracks 😍 The last 3 miles felt like an eternity bc my feet were so tired and sore by that point. But we did it! Collected our tshirts, changed into dry socks and shoes, ate chocolate before setting off home.
Matthew's mam made us dinner as we were picking Maggie up from there after they looked after her, and we got home about 10pm. Such a long day but so much fun! Had a lovely hot bubble bath and a really good scrub, and forced myself to stretch properly. Ending the day on 74k steps (new record!) and nearly 30 miles 🤯 time for bed 😴

1 January 2024
By Doug Faulkner, BBC News
The UK marked the beginning of 2024 with fireworks, street parties, and a message of inclusivity as people celebrated across Britain.
As Big Ben struck, midnight drones lit up the London sky with the message "London, a place for everyone," before a vibrant firework display began.
About 100,000 people gathered to watch the 15-minute spectacular in the city.
In Scotland, Britpop band Pulp performed as thousands braved the cold to mark Hogmanay.
There was also a fireworks display as Edinburgh marked its 30th year of the celebrations, while there was a mass ceilidh staged in Inverness.
London's display included more than 12,000 fireworks, 600 drones, and 430 lights.
It quoted Shakespeare heard from the King and also paid homage to the NHS, which celebrated 75 years in 2023.
A quote from King Charles III was used to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush crossing in which he said new arrivals "collectively enrich the fabric of our national life."
Further messages throughout the show were heard from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Dame Helen Mirren, Bella Ramsey, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, George the Poet, and Baroness Floella Benjamin, who read a poem by the late Benjamin Zephaniah.
The celebration continued with a New Year's Day parade, which started in Piccadilly at midday before making its way towards Westminster's Parliament Square.
Several days of weather warnings did not put off revellers in Scotland with tens of thousands watching Edinburgh's firework display.
Visitors from more than 80 countries gathered in the city, while Pulp headlined a concert in Princes Street Gardens.
Following the fireworks, thousands continued to celebrate, singing Auld Lang Syne, and dancing.
Inverness was host to the Red Hot Highland Fling, described by organisers as "one of the biggest ceilidhs on the planet," where folk singer Siobhan Miller entertained partygoers up to midnight.
Later, hundreds of hardy swimmers are expected to brave the waters of the Firth of Forth as part of the annual Loony Dook — dook being a Scots word for dip or bathe.
People are encouraged to don fancy dress for the charity swim.
In Allendale, Northumberland, the annual Allendale Tar Bar'l ceremony was held.
The centuries-old tradition sees 45 local men carry burning whiskey barrels through the town.
Before the celebrations, King Charles III and Queen Camilla waved to onlookers as they attended the New Year's Eve service at a church in Sandringham, Norfolk.
Ahead of giving his New Year message, the Archbishop of Canterbury urged politicians not to treat their opponents as enemies but as fellow human beings.
He told the BBC:
"Our capacity to disagree deeply and not destructively is cause for hope."
His message will be broadcast on BBC1 and iPlayer at 12:55 GMT.
In his New Year message, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hinted at tax cuts in an election year and said the UK should "look forward with pride and optimism."
He said his resolution would be to "keep driving forward."
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer used his message to say that while it had been "another tough year economically for millions of people, hope was the fuel of change."
Meanwhile, Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, renewed his party's call for electoral reform and appealed to "transform the nature of British politics for good."
