A classic PSH role for this week’s Monday Philm: Allen Mellencamp in Happiness (1998), dir. Todd Solondz. I’ve just about finished up Solondz’s filmography as a director so I can safely say this one is by far my favorite of his works. His films are intentionally uncomfortable, which isn’t my taste, and I wouldn’t go out of my way to rewatch any of them, except for Happiness—and only then because Phil Hoffman is in it.
The whole cast is going all out, especially Dylan Baker, who delivers one of the boldest performances ever. I love Allen and the incredible work PSH does here. It’s so intensely physical—Phil spoke about gaining weight for the role; finding Allen’s voice by letting him cave in on himself, physically; losing sleep and going into work every day anxious, worried about being laughed at on set and on screen. All of that tension comes out in Allen’s every move, from his heavy mouth-breathing to the awkward way he slams the phone down to drunkenly stumbling out of bed and across the floor when Kristina visits.
Happiness is a satirical comedy—“You’re not a scab, you’re a strikebreaker!”—but there are parts that are so deeply human, it’s just as uncomfortable as the jokes. Playing Allen was one of Phil’s favorite roles ever but the reaction he sometimes received unnerved him:
People were like, “You're a freak—you're good and all, but you played the sicko.” And I'm like, “Oh, thank you, I guess. Leave me alone.” People have a hard time saying, “I identified with that.” I mean, nobody is that person, but come on, you don't identify with being so enamored of somebody that you can't get up the nerve to say anything to them?
It reminds me of Scotty J in Boogie Nights, who is also crazy about someone who barely knows he exists (“What’s it like to obsess about somebody? What’s it like to want somebody so bad?”). Only Scotty is much easier to identify with—at least, more people are willing to say they identify with Scotty than with Allen (yk, bc of the crimes). But as Phil said, it’s not literal, you don’t have to make obscene phone calls or condone them to understand Allen’s struggle, it’s about (Phil’s words again) “how the need to be wanted or loved or admired is so powerful that they can't help but expose who they are with every fiber of their being.” There is so much shameful, confused, lonely, disgusting, anxious, desperate, unspoken humanity packed into every uncomfortable inch of his body. We are laughing at him but we also recognize him, even if we won’t admit it out loud.
There are glimpses of it in a few of Happiness’ other characters but Allen stands out. Phil brings such depth, a willingness to look like what others call “freaks” and “losers,” to dig those pieces of himself up and shape them into a character like Allen and share it openly.
#much more vulnerable than most people are willing to get ever. as actors or as individuals#happiness#monday philm#philip seymour hoffman#psh#*#this whole review was too serious so obvious disclaimer allen is so soooo hot I want him to **** ** until his *** is ******* out of ** *****

WILLIE NELSON TO RELEASE ALBUM FRIDAY MAY 31
Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Willie Nelson's new studio album The Border in all configurations on Friday, May 31.
Willie Nelson's The Border will be available digitally, on CD and black vinyl. Meanwhile Barnes & Noble will be offering an exclusive LP edition of The Border, pressed on orange vinyl and there will be an exclusive vinyl version offered on Willie’s D2C store that includes a 12” x 12” designed lyric book featuring the gorgeous album artwork with extensive listening notes by noted writer Mikal Gilmore and photos by Pamela Springsteen. All versions are available for pre-order HERE
The album's title track - Willie's insightful interpretation of Rodney Crowell's "The Border" - is available on all DSPs today (Thursday, March 14): HERE
Cowritten by Rodney Crowell and Allen Shamblin for Crowell's 2019 Texas album (a thematic tribute to the Lone Star State which featured guest artist Willie Nelson), "The Border" describes the inner life and outer reality of a border guard ("I work on the border, I see what I see") with Crowell's composition described in Rolling Stone as "more humanist than political, but no less tragic because of it." Willie's wise worldly take on the provocative song taps into an urgent universal relevancy that defines The Border.
The Border (his 152nd album, according to Texas Monthly's interactive All Willie Nelson Albums Ranked list) premieres 10 newly recorded Willie Nelson studio performances including four new Willie Nelson/Buddy Cannon compositions--"Once Upon a Yesterday," "What If I'm Out of My Mind," "Kiss Me When You're Through" and "How Much Does It Cost"--and "Hank's Guitar," a new song cowritten by Buddy Cannon and Bobby Tomberlin.
In keeping with his longstanding tradition of shining a light on country music's finest songwriters, Willie rounded out The Border, his first album in 2024, with his versions of compositions by Larry Cordle & Erin Enderlin ("I Wrote This Song for You"), Rodney Crowell & Will Jennings ("Many a Long and Lonesome Highway"), Shawn Camp & Monty Holmes ("Made in Texas") and Mike Reid ("Nobody Knows Me Like You").
Produced by longtime musical collaborator Buddy Cannon, The Border showcases Willie Nelson (lead vocals, Trigger) accompanied by Mickey Raphael (harmonica), Bobby Terry (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar), James Mitchell (electric guitar), Jim "Moose" Brown (Wurlitzer, B-3 organ, piano, synthesizer), Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion) and Barry Bales (upright bass); backing vocals are by Buddy Cannon, and Melonie Cannon. The Border features cover art depicting the Big Bend border area between Texas and Mexico.
Willie Nelson and friends are enjoying this year's Luck Reunion today and will be performing at the 2024 Stagecoach Country Music Festival at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, on Saturday, April 27.
Willie Nelson & Family will be on the road from June through September co-headlining the Outlaw Music Festival Tour 2024. With an all-star lineup featuring Willie, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, John Mellencamp, Billy Strings and more, this year's Outlaw Music Festival promises a once-in-a-lifetime epic musical experience.

While inducting entertainment lawyer Allen Grubman — the famed attorney for artists including Bruce Springsteen and Mariah Carey — longtime friend and client John Mellencamp took a moment to make his words count.
Before welcoming the “true mensch” to the stage to accept his honor, Mellencamp said, “Allen is Jewish, and I bring that up for one reason: I’m a gentile, and my life has been enriched by countless Jewish people.”
“I cannot tell you how f–king important it is to speak out if you’re an artist against antisemitism,” he continued. “I don’t give a f–k, I don’t care [what you are]. Here’s the trick: Silence is complicity. I’m standing here tonight loudly and proudly with Allen, his family and all of my Jewish friends and all of the Jewish people of the world.”
“F–k antisemtisim, and f–k anybody who says anything in that manner.”
Mellencamp’s comments come on the heels of antisemetic comments made by Kanye West in the past weeks, resulting in him being dropped from numerous partnerships.
Grubman — along with Jimmy Iovine and Sylvia Robinson — was the recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
The 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which took place this year in Los Angeles, will air Nov. 19 on HBO.
In addition to Grubman, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2022 class includes Dolly Parton, Eminem, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Lionel Richie and Carly Simon. Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis also joined the Rock Hall with the “award for musical excellence.”

This week’s Monday Philm is PSH’s only animated feature, the Australian claymation Mary and Max (2009), dir. Adam Elliot. Big year for animated!Phil—his episode of Arthur came out just a few months later!
I think this is only the second or third time I’ve watched Mary and Max, but I always need a bit of an adjustment period to get used to the style. I enjoy animated films and I especially appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating these lengthy stop-motion pieces (especially after watching the little “making of” doc with director Adam Elliot), but I don’t mesh at all with Elliot’s self-described “chunky-wonky” style. Visually one of the more challenging films for me to watch (probably because I am a bit like Max!).
A very good story, though. Ugly and beautiful, I said last time. Both Mary and Max’s stories dig around uncomfortably deep in my own head and childhood and memories. A lot of themes I connect with but don’t really feel like elaborating on right now. I’m listening to the late, great Daniel Johnston as I write this and Max reminds me of him, lol.
I was going through some old interviews this morning and found one where Phil said he recorded basically everything for Max in a single day, from a recording booth in London while Skyping with the director and crew in Australia. I’ve been thinking about that all day—he put in a few hours of work one day in 2008 and 15 years later it’s still having a deep, visceral impact on so many. I’ve read a lot of reviews from people who really cherish this film and honor it as the underrated gem it is. It’s not my favorite movie but it does represent autism and anxiety and loneliness and depression in a surprisingly real way, which I suppose is one of the advantages of animation. Maybe it’s easier to be truthful with complicated themes when you can literally shape them frame-by-frame with your bare hands.
“He had the most beautiful voice of any modern American actor. (Really, listen to it—it's amazing),” Tom Carson wrote about Philip in 2014. Whether it’s Lester Bangs’ vocal fry or Allen Mellencamp audibly caving in on himself or Lancaster Dodd’s commanding speeches or Phil’s own real voice—sort of slow, low, mumbling, gears turning in his head, until he catches the thought and it practically bursts out of him, chasing after it, voice raised, often booming, easy to laugh, a slight New York accent, such a unique inflection you can hear his tongue punctuate certain words and sounds so clearly—it’s one of his most outstanding trademarks. That’s what really makes Mary and Max special to me, is hearing PSH use that deep, lovely voice to explore a new medium. It’s almost easy to forget it’s him and I totally understand how people watch it without realizing he’s in it. Tbh I might love what he does in Arthur even more—it’s so camp—but he’s got such a rich voice, so good for any kind of voice acting, and it’s neat he got a taste of it doing this film.
Always thinking about that Esquire interview when Phil said, “I don't think I've made anything my kids can watch until they're like 40... It's funny, because I did a voice in an animated movie called Mary and Max. And a guy, like, kills himself in it. The one animated movie I make is for adults.”
#actually the best part of that interview is phil saying 'oh my GD my kids are NEVER watching boogie nights no WAY'#and then teenage cooper last year: 'I love boogie nights' lmao#monday philm#mary and max#philip seymour hoffman#psh#*#I do not enjoy talking or writing about this movie#but I can write 1k on his voice at any time

#her defense of him.. is understandable#not right but understandable#huge parts of her life were RUINED by the media circus and false speculation#a girl traumatized by that would probably readily jump to the defense of someone she percieves to be in the same situation#she is a staunch defender of women and has said that she almost attacked a guy who leered at a girl once#she knows the issues. shes wrong for this one but#idk. should it negate everything else shes done for women#twilight#kristen stewart#woody allen#ask#anon#100
