im so normal about kevin day i swear to god. imagine your mom invents a sport, imagine you grow up with this sport being your entire life, you get abused and punished and shoved into the spotlight from a young age, all for this sport. you don't know anything else. it's all you've ever done and all you've ever been. you have to be the best at it. and one day you get punished for that too, and this sport you've poured everything into gets ripped right out of your hands by the boy you've grown up forced to consider your brother. you have to learn it from zero with your non dominant hand. you have, in an incredibly short span of time, to get as good at it as you were before the injury. of course you're fucking obsessed with it to the point of being unsympathetic sometimes, of course there's no other choice. the pressure is unimaginable. you cannot afford to be anything but the best. you cannot afford to relax and let go of it even for a second. you left the cave but the shadows are all you've ever known

What's interesting about this era for Criston Cole is how his devotion to Alicent is coming to blows with his obsession with chivalry. He gets branded as "incel still mad Rhaenyra rejected him" a lot, but I read it as less about the rejection and more about how his image of chivalry and knighthood was shattered.

He believed that he was a righteous knight whom a princess fell in love with, so when he discovers that he was just a "whore" to her (his words not mine) it caused him to question his place in the world, hence his "it's the only thing I have to my fucking name" and being willing to die for his actions. In order for his romantic notions of knighthood to exist, he has to been punished. When Alicent spares him, he rationalizes his circumstances to himself, that the clement queen has given him purpose again, unlike that wretched princess, I shall devote my life to her. How courtly.

But he only knows how to operate within the story he tells himself. When Alicent wants to be protected and have him as a champion, he's her devoted dog, but we see in season 2 that his loyalty is contingent on her playing the part of the clement queen he's protecting. Now she's gone too far. She's using him for sexual favors, levying his influence at the small council (where he should never have been placed), and asking him to support her power in his capacity as Hand. He claims "every woman is an image of the mother, to be spoken of with reverence," but that was easy when Alicent was the reverent mother for him to protect, not an influential Queen Dowager for him to contend with.

There's a few times already he has roleplayed his little courtly fantasy of how things should be. When he departs for war, and asks for her favor, "that her Lord Commander may go into battle with her blessings - in his heart" he is craving the Alicent he knew, blessing his actions and affirming that he is a Good Knight.

His plea of "Have I not spared you?" in 2x05 is his attempt to return to their courtly romance, the gentle queen and her noble knight. He's inviting her back into the position away from the muck and murder he finds himself in, far away from the simplicity of knighthood. She shuts him down, and says not to speak her name. His vision is crumbling.
