They finally went and showed who’s these characters truly are (also, kinda controversy opinion, but bayverse kinda did that as well, but not as good, they got layers there but still kinda.. not rlly) ((I love that movie but once again hate the sexual-romantic tension btw April and the turtles. Bc its always only that!!! For her to end up with Casey ANYWAY!!!))

•cough• SO! We finally get to see how Raph is still head on on stuff and kinda short fuse, but that’s bc he cares and worries and is overprotective. And with the other brothers as well, you have no idea how HAPPY I was when Donnie got in the fight and wasn’t a helpless nerd whose only trait is computers, like in the others. Yeah, he asks for help (his comedic “help! Help heeeelp!” In the giant bird episode is amazing), but it’s not only him, all of them do at some point.

They finally showed who they are and why they’re like this! So the fandom taking away this important trait of them always makes me go feral.

Like I get flanderization in fandoms, especially when there is no new material, and fans are playing so much with fanons, they kinda get lost in it too much, so they forget the canon and strip off the characters of some of their traits!

Like, 'I like this one trait/I want to explore this trait more', this is liked by many, it gets explored some more and in the end people forget that it wasn't the only trait and it wasn't even that prevalent in the first place. Like Donnie's touch aversion. Some wanted to explore it, cause autism and all that and that's fair. But after some point people forget that he is aversed like 10% of the time. Which is NOT a lot, not the way people write him 'he is in a good mood so he bares his brothers touching him for a few seconds' =/

I won't say other versions didn't explore turtles characters cause I don't remember much xD I just know the basic characterisations. And I LOVE Rises spin on them!! Raph is still hot headed and angry, but he also directs it into aggressive protection and it feels REALLY nice, not just 'I am angry cause I am' xD Like I am sure other versions are protective too, they suppose to care, but I dunno, I don't remeeember if it was explained as well as with Rise Raph x) I like Rise Leo even more cause he is much more different from other versions while still having his core characteristics, like he is smart and observant and strategic, that's so cool!!! But he was not burdened by being a leader so he is a goof, which is kind of similar to 2012 Leo xD Donnie is just. Superb in every way xD He can fight, he LIKES fighting, he LOVES creating his tech for fighting XD Mikey doesn't need to be The funny one, cause they all are <3 So he gets a bit of different role that still feels similar <3 (Can't say much about Bayvesre caaaause I just can't get behind not 2D xD That's why I just couldn't stick with 2012, barely finished S1 xD)

least favourite leo would for SURE be the bayverse version. now.. i am the Few that actually enjoys those movies (sue me, they came out when i was first getting into tmnt so they hold some nostalgia value) but ive mentioned before my gripe with bayverse!leo just because he’s so narrow minded and so set aside from mike, raph and don. it feels like he’s their awkward older cousin that lives with them rather than a brother. bayverse!leo get in the bin. michael bay, you can join him whilst he’s there, actually. why did you do my boy dirty like this, huh?

my favourite leo would be 2003! i just really enjoy his storylines! i like that he’s far from perfect! i think he’s well written and he is a good balance of all the ingredients that make leo Leo!! plus leosagi <33333

gonna be super duper controversial with this one so im putting on bubble wrap to protect myself but least favourite donnie is… rise. oops. HEAR ME OUT!! i am totally fine with others liking rise don. i get the appeal. but my heart will forever love gentle, soft, sweet donnie, and whilst the change up in rise is COOL as hell, i just can’t with the sarccy, cold, snarky version of him. (plus i have a LOOOOT to say about ahem. certain stereotypes when it comes to writers creating canonically autistic characters but that’s another rant for another time) ONCE AGAIN!! i still enjoy his character!! but i just don’t find him to be my favourite.. okay swiftly moving on lol

Summary: 

Takes place in the ‘87 Universe in 1997, 6yrs after the show is finished (may be inaccurate to canon! Haven’t finished ‘87 yet). Both the Rise boys and ‘12 Boys come from 2009 in their respective universes. The Rise and ‘12 Kids are together for about a week b4 they are found by the ‘87’ Turtles, that week actually being spent in the 2012 universe. Lil Donnie was nearly finished on a device to communicate with Rise Splinter, before he and the rest of the kids ended up in the 1987 world. ‘12 Splinter gets it to work and keeps in contact with Rise Splinter, they’re worried sick but seen as the Rise boys where sent straight to ‘12 Splinter they are hoping that something similar happened with both of their kids. I want them to not know what’s going on at first but I also don’t want this au to be too angsty, hence the Splinters being able to communicate pretty much straight away. 1 1/2 months in The Donnie’s have found a way to commincate with the other Splinters! though they can’t send the kids back until some science-y thing is stable, which will be in 2 months. The whole thing lasts about 3 1/2 months. I think the 2012 Kraang will be responsible, which is why little 12yr old Donnie could make a communication device to the rise universe so quickly but 1987 Donnie couldn’t.

I'VE JUST STARTED TO REWATCH 2012 TMNT AND I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SHOW.

LIKE its not very nostalgic to me, i didnt religiously watch it or anything but i just LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH. The first tmnt show i ever watched was the 2018 and i feel like if i ranked them they would be tied. Maybe i'm a bit biased because tmnt 2018 is my favorite because of the family fluff and feels and i LOVE THAT TROPE ESPECIALLY FOUND FAMILY WITH APRIL. i love how they aren't constantly bullying mikey and i love donnie much more, AND LEO IN 2018??? LOVE. I also love raph here because like come on the gentle giant himbo trope is something i can't resist. THE WHOLE SHOW IS AMAZING IN ITS OWN SENSE. LIKE STORY WISE, PRETTY GOOD WRITING I'D SAY LIKE 7-9/10. even when the show ended when it was a bit rushed I FELT SO SATISFIED BECAUSE THEY WROTE IT IN A WAY THAT GAVE US SO MUCH ACTION AND SO MANY FEELINGS AND A DECENT RESOLUTION. not to mention that the autistic representation here is really good. The way they wrote low empathy and not make him look like a total asshole was amazing.

I'm not very far into the 2012 series yet but i LOVE what i see so far. I'm not very used to leo being the serious leader mom friend or raph being really emo and angry all the time (love him btw) yet because i watch 2018 soley for animation (but then realized i loved the franchise and hyperfixated on them all) But 2012 SLAPS. Hated april though. Hate april 2012 idk i can't see her as a likeable character because she played with my boy donnie. I really like the cgi artstyle actually. Like they knew to balance out comedy and the darker themes and i ESPECIALLY LOVED THE FLASHBACKS THEY ARE SO AMAZING. I'M IN LOVE WITH HOW CUTE DONNIE IS IN THIS VERSION. I JUST LOVE THEMMMMMMM.

Also can i just say as much as i love 2018 IT COULDVE DONE SO MUCH BETTER IF IT WAS MAYBE REALEASED TWO YEARS LATER. i wasnt part of the fandom when they aired the first episode but i know they received a LOT of undeserved backlash. Like the show just ended and the fans haven't adjusted to that change yet and then you throw new character designs, new leader, new april (2k18 april solos) and couch potato splinter. Like i get it, BUT GIVE IT A CHANCEEEE PLEASE ITS AMAZING.

I personally prefer the new designs better and not just because of the artstyle. Its mostly because of the overall more different shillouettes of them. Like YOU CAN BLACK THEM OUT IN A SHADOW AND YOU CAN TELL WHICH IS WHICH. In the old designs though they were adorable and stubby and nostalgic you couldn't tell them apart very well unless you look for differences in height or weapon, and even so those are smaller parts of a design! I also really like the fact that they're all different turtles in 2018. Like THANKS FOR TELLING ME WHAT A SOFTSHELL IS THEY'RE ADORABLE. I wanna also point out that i really don't mind the change in lore for weapons because i'm gonna be honest i don't know that lore. I just wanna know why donnie 2k12 only had a stick. LIKE HE WAS RIGHT HE COULDNT POSSIBLY FIGHT ALIENS WITH JUST A WOOF STAFF.

Tldr; both are good and we should stop comparing them to eachother because while they are of the same franchise are two different shows that both have ups and downs.

i don't know how many episodes there are (and i don't want to know! it was cancelled after 2 Seasons and i'm savouring every bit i can), but at a pace of 5 to 10 minutes of episode a day, it's lasted me 2 months, and S1 ain't even done!

and now, for the Actual long answer, a.k.a. my shamelessly gushing rundown of what makes me run crying back to rise every time i check out other turtle media! (/j. mostly)

first off, to crush a Hoover Dam of turtle show lore like a beer can, Raphael's characterization in his various incarnations is often... lacking. and when i was a kid i used to turn off the TV 'cause he annoyed me. but now! he's my favorite guy!

love how they changed his theme of "being impulsive and hotheaded makes you mean" to (riffing a bit here) "makes it easier to visibly care abt ppl, and for others to listen to you, but everything falls short after that". which is why he's bad at plans, and any strong fear for his bros can come out pretty explosively!

'Plans?' i hear you say, 'why is THAT his team contribution?' because, well, a basic turtle-show-lore scope tells you that Leonardo is the leader, right? blue bandana, duel swords, yada yada cultural phenomenon. but NOPE not in rise! actually i think it's the only incarnation where this is the case? and it was a brilliant bit of planning ;> theres a netflix movie that released August 5th this year btw ;>

but my absolute uncontested fav fav fav divergence is THEYRE ALL DIFFERENT SPECIES OF TURTLE! and it goes SO HARD for the quirks of their xenobiology to be giving in so handily to their visible aptitudes!!

Donatello's mechanical 'battle shell' is worn constantly to make up for his lil' spiny softieshell back- Michelangelo can do this Box Turtle thing where he pops all his limbs into his shell, and it seems only fitting against his youngest status (13, 14 don 14.1 leo, 15 raph), his overemotionality, and general 'razzmatazz'- Raph's alligator snapping turtle build (spiked shell! big boy!) making him an absolute tank AND a bulldozer, and leo

plus! the resultant designs creates an immediate and pleasing distinction between them for viewers, which was one of the things i historically (read: as a 10 yr old) disliked about 2012-2017 TMNT. the animation, by the way? Cool As Shit! i willingly watch the rise intro before each ep, sometimes slowing its speed just to absorb it better. practically every time i do, there's something i never noticed!

the style of Battle scenes in particular has left me feeling winded with just how creatively the animators can manipulate the medium. (i've seen fight storyboards from the movie, and they mericlessly squish me like a bug, so hell knows what'll happen when i see the full thing...) and about the villains, i haven't been disinterested by a single one yet! they're endearingly gimmicky but eccentric, and bombastic but p enjoyable

hiiii umm you commented on one of my fics so i checked ur stories out and u have a ton of empath / psychic mikey fics that i put on my to read list! turns out ur tumblr is the same name as ur ao3 so here i am :) its a popular hc that mikey is an empath because of some stuff in 2012 about the kraang dimension and his neurodivergence. or so i thought bc i did some digging and this hc seems to precede 2012. youve been in the fandom longer than most and im not calling u old i swear T^T i just want to ask what made empath mikey so popular. dont get me wrong i love it and im writing a huuuge fic about it (8 chaps in already!) so i hope u dont think im questioning its validity ;-;

Well, uhh... it's popular because... I made it popular. *looks left, looks right* I might have started a trend.

So, back in the 2000s, I had written this really long fic called Cold Fire that got around and then I noticed that other writers were doing similar things that I had done, and then life got busy for a decade, and when I came back I rewrote the whole thing for 2012 Mikey, and then I met @ulisabarbic-blog who had been writing Empath Mikey for 1987 and 2003, and I guess it went on from there? And I found that a bunch of fans had been discussing psychic Mikey ideas and neurodivergent turtle ideas. And I genuinely don't know if I got that snowball rolling or not. Because in the early 2010s I became friends with the very people who coined Neurodivergent and Cousin Neurologies, and started my own advocacy, and it wasn't until after my own autism diagnosis in 2013 that I even saw the word neurodivergence in fandom. I joined Tumblr in 2016, but it took a good couple of years before I saw Autism and ADHD headcanons other than my own in the TMNT fandom. I really pushed for Mikey's ADHD to be noticed. Then I pushed to call him autistic. And then I saw other fans doing it. I don't know if I got any of it started, but I know I at least influenced Mikey being psychic throughout the fandom after 2012. Because literally all my fics are about that.

Also, you can call me old, I might as well be in this fandom with how most of the Elder Fans aren't around much anymore!

Also, I know I at least helped push the headcanons about Mikey's ADHD until it became canon. Donnie was always suspected autistic (back in 2003 it was Aspergers before that was folded into Just Autism It's All Just Autism, plus, as I'm Jewish, Asperger's work with Nazi doctors upsets me) but he was stereotyped.

I call Mikey Girl Autistic, because autism in women wasn't studied as much, same with ADHD, also Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue Campaign made it so much worse ANYWAY-

Why I created this account: Now, this is a loooong story. I liked les mis before, had watched the 2012 movies a few times already (cried every time as one is to do) and was begining on the book, but I didn’t know there was a fandom. I only had ever seen fandoms for tv series, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and such, I didn’t knew ppl made fandoms for ‘old books’ (I’m kinda daft). So one fateful night I was seeing Pride and Prejudice crack vids that I had found by some miracle and thought “wouldn’t it be crazy if there were les mis crack vids??” and off I went!! In btw the crack vids I saw one called “enjoltaire crack” or somethin, and thought “what an odd name... is this a person? new phone who dat?” (keep in mind I was in the begining of the book, I had no way of knowing). And I was like “whaaaaaat the heck? the two laud boys? I need context”. And off I went again, ended up in fuckin fanfiction dot net, read this one comedy/mock/staged like a tv series fic where all the amis shared a house and was pleasantly surprised to know THEY HAD NAMES!!! AND PERSONALITIES!!! and I needed more, of course I did (and I rushed some hundred pages on the book too). At this point I obvs knew there was, in fact, a fandom, an looked for it on twitter, where I followed this account that reposted tumblr posts, and I thought “this is absolute GOLD, I’m CACKLING, I need to check it out!!!”, and this is how all these events brought me here.

(Me who has been waiting for someone to ask this question) Let Disabled Leo exist.

When he first woke up from the coma he literally couldn't walk the pain was that bad. It took 2 weeks to get up to the episode with the creep where leo was by the river.

Leo has Chronic pain bc screw "ThE PAin is JuSt In yOuR HEaD", Leo has good days and bad days and sometimes needs help during the bad days.

Not Directly Knee pain but leo has episodes and so much PTSD from the fight and seeing the scars or burst of pain can trigger them.

(Sliding in Autistic Leo) One of Leo's stims was pacing which was hard to do during the farmhouse and on bad days.

Swimming Helps on Bad days due to less stress put on leg.

Due to The PTSD Cold weather and temperatures along with cold water will give phantom pains (I think that's what it's called.)

Actual legit favorite comment about my TMNT fanfiction right now: “Oh my fucking god woman how do you write fics so fucking fast like this? Do you not sleep? Are you actually Mikey staying up with the laptop in between video games? Or Donnie? You’re Donnie, aren’t you? Hah, I got you, Donnie, go to sleep.”

I’m both? Heh. I can’t actually play video games (a combination of physical and neurological disabilities) but I love watching them, I would watch Mikey play forever. I will also hermit myself in my writing room with the three cats wandering in and out reminding me to eat and I will start writing either a fanfic or part of one of my three urban fantasy novels and then I’ll look at the clock and like eight hours will have passed. If my husband is home (his work in IT/AV sends him around the country) he’ll stop in, nuzzle me, and go cook a meal. Sometimes I will forget to eat or hydrate. I once was hospitalized for this and needed three IV bags to rehydrate. I take after my dad, a painter and sculptor who will lose hours unless my mom, a painter and art teacher, makes him food. Like Donnie, I will immerse myself in research. I’ve got a degree in creative writing, but had I known how my life would turn out, I would have gone for another degree, in psychology, maybe another in neurology.

The reason I made my Tumblr was to store notes for a thesis I wanted to write about Michelangelo and his neuropsychology, why I headcanon all his incarnations as Autistic and ADHD, especially the 2012 Mikey. I wanted to explain how Donnie’s autism wasn’t the only way to show our neurodiversity. That Mikey was autistic, just sliding around other parts of the spectrum infinity knot, occasion bumping into Donnie. (The woman who became my autism mentor is the person who coined the term Neurodivergence, btw) I wrote a short oneshot called “Mikey, The Lifegiver” and it was so well-liked that I turned it into a AU series with a depressed Mikey. It’s up to twelve parts. It might be over, unless the one in my head decides to spill out.

I didn’t think I would write anything beyond my Psionic Mikey AU, “Cold Fire Rising” which was a remake of my old fanfic from the late 90s/early 00s when I finally got online in college. See, I got onto the infamous Ninja Turtles Mailing List run by Andrew Modeen and I made a ton of friends, and I learned a ton of Mirage canon facts. I discovered a lot of fanfic tropes that lots of kids now take for granted. loved and hated. I watched ship wars be born. I watched OC romances and tcest happen even if we didn’t have words for it. Sometimes I look at the Tumblr fandom who thinks the TMNT Fandom might die with the 2012 show and I sigh, because it didn’t die with the 90s films or Archie comics, it didn’t die with the 2003 toon, its going strong with the IDW comic, it’s strong with the 2014/16 films, it’s going to rise with the 2018 toon and the memories of 2012 and 2003. We are legion, we are ancient. We go back to the fucking 1980s, my children. Toys forever.

But anyway. I wound up making sequels. I wound up making a whole Season 5 AU off of one request about Leo and Mikey and Ghost Splinter. I just began a 2003 AU fic off of yet another request. I think “The Sunshine Child” is done, unless new canon episodes inspire a story. The turtle tots episode and the Monsters arc were supposed to happen before “When Worlds Collide” aka the Electric Mikey episode that broke my heart by taking his powers away so I made him keep them and he got more. The Usagi arc was supposed to air just before the futuristic 50 years later series finale arc. So things is messy. But we knew that.

So I write really fast because my mind doesn’t sleep even when I am asleep. My ADHD brain plays movies complete with music. I have to write them. Sometimes they don’t translate or convey all the wording and emotions I see in my head, but according to reviews on FF, I seem to get the point across.

Mind you, my husband and probably my editor would like me to work on the original fiction more. But the thing about fanfiction is that I can take bits and move it to the original work which makes more words I already wrote!

Also, my insomnia NOS means that I don’t sleep or I sleep for like 14 hours. I don’t work, I am on disability insurance, so that probably makes writing easier.

This post got away from me, but I think it answered the question.

This actually reminds me, I should make myself lunch. And drink from that bottle of water on my desk right there.
