I'm doing a proper BCS rewatch for the first time in a while and man, it's making me remember why I fell in love with it in the first place. One thing I haven't praised this show enough for is its creativity: the EMHS, the Chicago sunroof... How does one come up with those ideas? A lesser writer would've given Chuck a more common mental illness like depression, and made it so Jimmy was arrested for one of his scams, which would've been fine, but the BCS team goes to great lenghts to make unique and highly memorable choices. And it pays off: name one fictional court scene that's even kind of like Chicanery. The writers didn't know this was going to happen when they gave Chuck EMHS, but they're very good at working with the cards they've given themselves (which is a great skill to have since the show is a prequel).
Another thing I like in early BCS is the way it introduces its characters. At first, they're tropey and fulfill very clear roles in the story: Howard is the rich asshole boss, Kim is the grounding love interest, Nacho is the bad guy. They have some other aspects that keep them interesting (like Nacho's ability to talk down Tuco) but this simplicity allows the characters to be instantly recognizable to the audience. And it's only then that the writers start to give us more information about them, expanding on or straight-up contradicting the initial assumptions we made. It's very well done. And the side characters! Not one of them is boring or tedious, I absolutely adore them.
One more quality that struck me (and I'm not the first person to say this) is the cinematography. Take the first cigarette scene with Kim and Jimmy. Two lines of dialog are spoken, but we still learn that they've been close for a long time, that their relationship is or used to be romantic in nature, that Kim is devoted to her job, but that she will still make an effort to clean up Jimmy's messes. The amount of information they're able to deliver just a few shots... and in such an elegant way. Mastery of the medium transpires through every aspect of BCS. It's a lesson for storytellers.
