I dont think it's worth dooming about AI art because largely i still think audiences that are invested in art largely are compelled by process about as much (and sometimes more) than end product, and i'm not sure that AI models can really catch up with process. even when people cared a lot about AI images during their sorta bizarre nonsense era, it was kinda because of the inscrutable process creating works that were like. fun to think about. like remember 2021 neuralblender and the like?

this was fun because it was the kind of image that like... only an AI model would think to make, and there's elements of it that would likely be difficult for human artists to replicate-- not impossible, but like, difficult. as such this image was and is captivating to many people. current AI image generators are basically trying to imitate either photography or, especially now, particular illustrators or particular styles of art. except like. it skips past the process, or like, the process is completely different and like. not i think especially compelling? ppl might think differently about that but there's something about like a heavily rendered AI anime girl that is less interesting to me to an otherwise heavily rendered anime girl. i remember coming across a dark fantasy genre artist on tumblr, and i was about to send them an ask about how they got a certain texture in what looked like digital work-- before i looked closer and realized "ah, this is AI, they can't give me a replicable answer." that dampened my enjoyment of images that were otherwise fun to look at. this maybe sounds bad, but without process, an object becomes kinda kitschy to me. the art-object itself is more functional than anything at that point, like how "fountain" is interesting because of the presentation of it as art, though a urinal is just a urinal otherwise.

thinking about it with games, i think there's a lot of interesting lines people draw there: what elements of development would you have a problem with if you found out some developer used AI for them? image generation is particularly useful for textures, but texture work is something a lot of people care a lot about. people care about photography, painting, and image editing... but what about like, generating a height map for that texture? what about photographing a texture, and then asking like some AI model to make it tile better? different people care about different things more or less. there's games out there who's textures tell like, interesting stories, "Sonic Adventure"s developers went on trips to places in the real world and took photos and used them in the game. that's like, really very appreciable, and makes me admire that game more-- but like also. there's a lot of games where i kinda either don't think about the texture work at all, or only really admire it for obvious observable qualities- the end product.

Using AI for code is another thing. I think like, it's kinda obvious that people would do this. programming is like an obvious use case for a language model, and i think it's questionable when people get up in arms about it. programs like RPGmaker are kinda highly appreciated for essentially taking out "programming" as a required skill to make games. this enabled a lot of artists and writers to create games, with mostly 'readymade' tools, which led to a lot of interesting art... obviously there's still programming work involved, event scripting, custom mechanics, but like i think that's similar to having to think about scripts at least somewhat even if you're getting some AI model do a lot of the work of implementation for you... but then again, there's games that are beautiful for systems that are programmed, and thought up by highly skilled people.

basically i think a lot of AI takes away the work in areas people don't necessarily care about. and that's a subjective thing. there might be a lot to care about in those areas. it makes me feel kinda bad seeing like, clipart go away in advertising. like. i saw some ad that had this AI generated art of a bowl of noodles, and it was passable from a distance, but there were a lot of problems with it that annoyed me, mistakes a trained human illustrator wouldn't make-- bad tangents, lines that didn't actually flow. but also like. okay. so what. like that's not art i necessarily care about being good... but like otherwise. process is literally cool and a lot of process will kinda have to remain human. i'd be weirded out if i saw some major company using a shoddy generated image like that because it'd feel cheap. similar to how it's a bit cheap when a game opts for 'readymade' assets.. if there's still some interesting process elsewhere there, interesting thought, that still creates intrigue. but i wouldn't be interested in like, an asset flip without ideas, lol.

tldr; i dont think writing, art, or programming are dead forever now, but like if ur writing copy, making illustration, or doing amateur work or something you will probably struggle with finding cheaper clients. which does kinda suck tbh. finding an audience that appreciates ur work and the process behind it will probably just be as variable as it always has been, though.

I have almost 90,000 posts, mostly reblogs, but I have a lot of content and I do not mind you doom scrolling. In the same vain, do not assume I was the same person that posted one, two, five or ten years ago. Going through my blog to find "problematic" content only wastes time and tells me you think people are incapable of growth and change. Do better.

Keeping a schedule is tantamount to keeping people engaged and them building a following. Whether you post one a week or daily, or like me--almost hourly--people will come no matter your content if you give them a Reason to come.

No matter how unpopular the thing you are blogging about it's there is ALWAYS an audience. It's never a wasted effort to be creative and put your voice out there. Please, the fandom gets stale without new creators and ideas.

On that note, you are not stealing from another for making the same or similar content. That means you should gif that show that's already been gif'd dozens of times over. You should draw that comic of a popular headcanon/ship. You should write your story. As long as you are doing things in your own words/style and not outright copying word for word or sketch per sketch, you're fine. Two cakes are ALWAYS Better than one.

Being angry and spending your time hating/attacking/vague blogging about other creators only hurts you in the long run. jealously is a normal emotion, but when you let it take over your happiness you're only falling deeper into a pit that's already hard to get out of. (trust me)

Please, please, please do what makes you happy. Life should not be wasted on anger. You don't need popularity to be happy, sometimes it can be hella stressful. (take my word for it) Don't become the bully you wish you where in middle school. Spread kindness, support artist and creators. (this includes gif makers, image editors, amv makers, writers, OCs, etc)

Just. Have fun.

They’re all convinced Ryan is leaving the show even though he’s literally said multiple times that he’s not. But hope flourishes when he finds comfort in the form of a sinner, but not just any sinner, but one of the most powerful ( and feared) overlords in hell. Will they keep on their current paths, which only drags them further into the darkness, or will they rise, together, and save themselves? can they learn to love again, or are they both hopeless cases, doomed to drown? 

This story takes place in whoever's POV I decide fits the story, but mostly takes place in Lucifer and Alastor’s Pov. The author of this story (me!) fully intends this the ship Lucifer and Alastor. This author also recognizes Alastor to be an ace charactor, but, (since Viv hasn’t confirmed Alastor to be Aro) will not consider Alastor Aroace, but only ace. Alastor has PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), ADHD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Anxiety Disorder ( constant feeling of anxiety, suffers panic attacks, and chest pain when stressed), and Trichotillomania (An impulse control disorder, or a hair-pulling disorder)

You know what’s funny? Is that Thrawn is really being turned into a “Machiavellian” type of villain, but what’s even funnier is that Machiavelli himself received this type of treatment. Now idk how much familiar you are with the 16th century author, but just know this: Machiavelli and “Machiavellian”, and whatever people can take from him, is heavily misunderstood (I actually really hate the use of the adjective, but perhaps that’s a story for another type). Now I know that Zahn wrote Thrawn based on a certain extent on the Machiavelli archetype (I remember reading it somewhere, pardon if I have no proofs), but I’m actually laughing hard thinking that as characters they are having the same treatment by popular media. Lemme explain: Machiavelli wrote the Principe not because “oh he cynic!1!🥶He mad!1🤬”. No. Machiavelli wrote what he wrote because he wanted to save Italy dalla Ruina, from its ruin. Machiavelli dreamed of a more compact and unified Italy. He had a vision and just as much as Thrawn, he wished to serve his people, Florence (in Thrawn’s case, the ascendancy) and Italy (which didn’t existed at the time).

And now, with Thrawn being reduced as you said in a villan without complex motifs, I can’t help but think how poetic is to be doomed to the same narrative as the figure who inspired your existence. Maybe this was planned all along, I don’t think so personally, but Thrawn is being oversimplified by Filoni the same way Machiavelli gets reduced as just a “pragmatic person” and “the ends justify the means” by everyone (don’t let me start on how wrong the quote is).

To sum up: Thrawn and Machiavellian are rhyming in the same direction in popular mainstream media.

Actually there was a period of time when I was really invested in this topic, I read his 10 letters, history of Florence +the Prince obviously and almost fell from a chair when they put him into Assassins Creed game, but now there're just small bits that I remember. Maybe it's time to refresh things

I didn't know that Zahn was actually inspired by Machiavelli. I'm new to this part of the fandom, so I haven't read anything about him or his working process, but after you mentioned it I'll take a note for the future. I must confess I learned who Thrawn was only during the Ahsoka show and due to the fandom. Like there were so many memes about him here on Tumblr, there's no way fans will hype some basic dude so much. And then my friend recommended the new trilogy

So yeah, it's such a pity that not 1, but 6 books of new material got completely ignored and the character simplified to what we've already seen so many times literally everywhere. You phrased it beautifully

I haven't read the old trilogy yet, heir to the empire, only know the plot in general, but I'm curious what exactly motivates Thrawn to rebuild the empire. And how the characterization of him differs between these trilogies. Is he mostly the same or did Zahn change the character after so many years like Terry Pratchett's Vetinari evolved from the very first version of the Patrician to his later works (I can't help comparing them after yesterday, though I hadn't done it before idk)

I got a bit long winded, sorry.

3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

I think I lean towards extremes when it comes to emotions and motivations. This often leads to dealing with some kind of trauma or extreme situation. When I did a redemption arc, it was with a character who went very very dark out of love and grief and exaggerated loyalty that was the result of early trauma. And when they finally got their sense of right and wrong back, what they had done gave them PTSD, including blaming themselves even for the part that was genuinely not their fault.

My first Zelda fic involved a hero who was absolutely terrified of basically everything. And, yes, it was because of a traumatic event (to put it mildly). Couldn’t write a slightly nervous hero with one or two phobias, nope.

In my current WIP, the protagonist grew up fully aware that their status as the chosen one could get them killed and that if that happened, everyone and everything might be doomed or, best case scenario, several other people would have to sacrifice themselves to prevent that. They responded by becoming an overachiever and perfectionist.

It’s not that I can’t write more moderated feelings, I do all the time, but I’m always drawn to making the main characters at least have very big feelings.

10. How do you decide what to write?

Not in the most healthy way, admittedly: I have a hard time motivating myself to write stories if I don’t think they’re ‘different’ enough. To be clear, this is absolutely bonkers on my part. People have been writing for centuries, nothing I do is actually going to be unique unless it’s complete nonsense, and even nonsense has been done.

Just the same, the ideas I tend to come back to and that eventually become stories are, for the most part, the ones that I feel are more original. Not all the time, but often.

And sometimes it’s because an idea that I wouldn’t think was original turns out to have no fic I can find so I end up having to do the work myself. That’s what happened with Arashikage.

I don’t recommend this mentality of trying to be original. Remember, “Holy crap, two cakes!” is the truth.

27. How long did it take to write [insert fic]? Describe the process.

I… don’t keep track. ATHU took a long time to write, and is still not done, because I had trouble finalizing the plot and I was plagued with constant doubt on whether I even should write it. I remember posting on tumblr looking for encouragement before I posted the first chapter, and back then I had like three followers who weren’t bots so of course I got nothing. So I just did it scared.

My typical process is to write a summary. If it doesn’t come easily, I write three: a five line one to force myself to identify what’s actually important, a fifteen line one to add some key elements while still keeping a bird’s eye view, and then the full summary. Once that’s done, I start drafting, mostly from top to bottom but with occasional scenes written early.

I am completely incapable of posting without reviewing each chapter at least twice, so that’s part of the process too.

With Rogue, I’m trying something new by doing a lot of world building and notes in obsidian.

For ATHU, I’m a bit disappointed nobody asked WHY Link is so formal and polite to strangers, both in terms of what he says and how he says it, speaking slowly and evenly.

I ended up putting it on discord as a fun fact: it’s conflict avoidance, he’s trying very hard to make sure he’s not intimidating or doing anything to make people mad.

There’s another level of why in there but of course nobody’s asked THAT either…

Tell us about Moby Dick!!

Alright I apologize in advance this is long and mostly going to be about Ahab because he is the one who plagues my mind so

I went into this fully expecting to dislike Ahab because the cultural perception of him is this angry raving lunatic who just out to serve himself but he’s not! He’s a good captain and a good person! His crew thinks he’s the coolest guy ever! They all love him! And guess what so do I!!!

He wants revenge NOT just because of the leg thing. The whale bit his leg off (also kind of a simplified version of it, he was more chewed alive) but he wasn’t even really mad about it initially. His crew later tied him to his hammock in a straitjacket and left him there because he was in pain and traumatized and acting like it. After getting back home he was impaled on his own prosthetic and then immediately sent back out to a rigorous, deadly job without a chance to heal. The whale represents everything bad that’s happened to him that he doesn’t have control over and he desperately wants that control back. He can’t fight the system or the men who hurt him or the concept of ableism but he can fight that fucking whale. He is a deeply traumatized person who never got the help he needed so he decided to take matters into his own hands. He believes the whale is the source of evil in the world and by killing it he can forever free humanity from the tyranny of a cruel and uncaring god.

He puts up a facade of power and strength because the last time he showed weakness he was treated like an animal. The only person he allows even a little control is Starbuck because that’s the one person he trusts (gay). He is a fundamentally hurt, lonely man who could have gotten better and this tragedy could have been avoided had he been given the help he needed. He has nightmares and awakes in panics, he paces the deck all day and night, and he is scared of losing his power. He is angry at the universe and god and mankind. He is not crazy. He is trying to save himself and others but dooms them all in the process.

Also his death haunts me. Everyone had lead me to believe that the whale eats him but it doesn’t! He gets tangled in the harpoon line and the whale drags him to the bottom of the ocean. I think anyone who Knows Me understands why that fucked me up a bit. The whale kills everyone else as well aside from Ishmael, by the way. It’s really fucking sad.

Anyway there’s my case for why Ahab is great and why I love him and think about him so much. This is just ONE reason I like Moby-Dick btw but I’m not writing a book report via tumblr.

Freya also ends up in a simular state (not dead, but more in put in a comatose state by someone), and ends up waking up during Frisks trip.

..still want to work on that part though ! ^^’ what I know is they get a very happy ending :)) after two more piles of angst <3

Freya and clover also have a very special bond, it’s not just a romantic thing— they were there for each other at their worsts. and though I wouldn’t say they do end up together in genocide route— they end up kind of only being able to trust each other. They have the kind of bond where they don’t trust anyone else but find comfort in each other after everything that happened— they basically went through the same thing, Freya’s end being a little worse.

..however that’s complicated too cause in my version, there’s a little fork in the road in the genocide run based on how Freya talks about clover. I will explain it in the Google doc much better :3

And then there’s neutral.

I haven’t really explained it; but from my other Posts of her— you can gather Freya has a darkness to her.

And in the last ask; when I was mentioning how Freya becomes something that she doesn’t want to be, something clover would stand against— that’s apart of it.

Freya was cursed before even being conceived by her own relative.

For this relative, this was an act against the hatred and cruelty they had been put through— a big part of it also being from them suffering the loss of a loved one too.

But for Freya, it doomed her. Most of everyone who had heard or believed that part of the legend treated her differently for it.

Everyone except clover.

In each ending , that curse activates in different ways

In neutral, she pretty much goes absolutely ballistic.

Clover doesn’t witness most of it, and luckily it’s mostly directed on flowey in this case; and therefore it cuts the flowey fight a liittle short in this au— but even if Clover was perfectly fine afterwards, even if they didn’t blame her for any of this, and even though she technically did this to save them in some way, Freya wouldn’t except kindness from them anymore. Freya would be too ashamed in herself in the end to. She knows what she has done. She doesn’t deserve the happiness she once wished for.

She feels she deserves to be burnt at the steak.

So in summary; fate is afraid of Freya so the cowboy stays alive /j

(I just like clover and want them to have a good chance at life lol)

What social media platform is your favorite and why? (I personally really like your tumblr vibes hehe)

mmm i'd say pinterest but that doesn't really count as social media i want to say tumblr too but i haven't curated my dashboard well enough to actually enjoy scrolling through it so i just post and dip. same for Instagram and tiktok, i want to stay away from doom scrolling reels for 10 hours yk that leaves me with twitter and listen.,, /My/ own twt timeline is the least stimulating app out of all of them cause it's mostly just art and funny stuff. i'm not saying it's a common experience or that twitter is better than all the other apps because it definitely is not it sucks ass buuuut mine is pretty tame cause i have cool moots Art-wise, twitter is my main platform (as in, it's where all my art is and where most of my "'audience'" comes from) but lately I've been enjoying posting on tumblr more. you simply don't get reblogs of people shamelessly screaming and key smashing in the tags anywhere else, it's a tumblr-exclusive experience. I'm also a big fan of the yap-friendly format as there is no strict word limit. the Tumblr People are also surprisingly active and interactive here as well which i also like (case-and-point: the #ask iztea tag that i never even knew i needed to make)

Let's Talk About: Burrow's End and Reactor Charlie

Hello, Preternatural Predators!

Holy shit. Holy shit. Spoilery shit ahead!

This feels like two wildly different episodes because of the energy and the vibes and I also cannot fathom a universe where they were halved and released separately. The events of this episode needed to happen in one sitting even though my heart is beating so quickly for two very different reasons.

Let's talk about the first act where Erika Ishii is MVP for being the most no-fucks-to-give grandma. Just casually strolling up to one of the bigwigs and straight up talking to them like they're equals. May we all have the confidence of Ava and her four winters of age.

I loved the reactions Brennan, Rashawn, and Jasper were exhibiting throughout. Truly children of a parent who not just has their foot in their mouth--but their whole legs as well.

Jaysohn and Lila getting the family into trouble and facing consequences for their actions feels like a natural progression--but god damn if I didn't have the sweats throughout the entirety of it. Siobhan and Izzy are truly delivering one of the most consistently amazing portrayals of pre-teens.

Also--Viola and Thorn? Couple goals. Tula? Fucking scary. And Brennan Lee Mulligan with those dice? Even as a player, he truly knows how to make those click clacks sound menacing.

And then we get to the second part. And the map. Holy shit. Aabria Iyengar, you mad woman. Rick Perry, you mad man. The art department is truly comprised of geniuses. (And I have been remiss in shouting out the make-up and styling department, but they have been delivering every single episode too.) Holy shit.

My adrenaline is still through the roof because of that second half. And I'm naming Jasper William Cartwright as a second MVP this episode. Mostly because of what happens after the map is revealed--but also because of the stuff he did prior. But the Box of Doom moment really solidified my case for having two MVPs this episode. (Again, not discounting all the other players. They're all great. But some actions and decisions just elevate the experience of the episode for me.)

This episode is high octane. Big ups to everyone.

Yes!!! Watchers are Narrative!! I wish I could put it in words better but that's exactly how I see the Watchers. The patterns and stories and everything Just Makes Sense

DUDE LITERALLY i so badly wish i could actually articulate what i'm talking about here or honestly i at least wish i had some screenshots from the bigger mechscord about how people talked about Narrative. but it's just- ok if you're someone who has never heard of the mechanisms.

the mechanisms were a band of immortal space pirates who roamed the universe looking for stories. every story they found was always a tragedy and every story they made was equally a tragedy. they transcended time and space as they traveled because wherever they were going and whatever they were doing was at the whims of whatever (out of universe) made the story better. the way this manifests in universe means that the Narrative kind of exists in universe and has it's own thoughts and whims and is doing it's own thing. this is most obvious when the mechanisms die. but space, i thought you said they were immortal? yeah, they were, until it served the narrative for that to no longer be the case. all of their deaths are pretty indicative of this, but i think jonny's is the best example/the easiest one to understand.

"for some reason, it sticks". the "reason" is the narrative. the narrative has decided jonny works better dead than alive, now, so that's what he is, even though he has never before been able to reach that point.

basically it's taking those concepts that got real popular on tumblr (doomed by the narrative, the narrative loves you, etc.) and making it real- the narrative is somehow a sentient, alive thing that has wants and a story to tell. you are a member of that story and equally the vessel through which the narrative can tell it. once the narrative no longer needs you, as character or narrator, that means your story is over too.

things happen because the narrative says they do. these things don't have to make sense- sometimes something just works better this way, so there's plot holes and retcons and inconsistencies and missing information from different sides of the story but that doesn't matter because it's all serving one big story.

so like yeah the mechanisms concept of the narrative really encapsulates the watchers, and honestly a lot of mcyt storytelling in general, to me. it's a little cruel but it's mostly just not human. it has a story it wants to tell and that story is very frequently tragic, or at least has a lot of tragedy within it. (the mechanisms sometimes told happy stories! kinda! look the only thing i'm thinking of is briar rose and cinders and even that's not quite happy but you get what i mean.) sometimes the story doesn't quite fit together right, or elements are only decided upon later on and have to be sort of shoved in. the narrative exists mostly outside of the story but sometimes needs to move things along or needs someone to tell the story so it chooses someone to do it. it leaves just enough room for interpretation in the story for the audience to put themselves into it, to have their own brand of fun. do you see the vision.

Anatomy & injury tips, P2

Here are some's some more anatomy stuff from my class that could be useful for writing/making art.

I'm doing this series by the modules of my class, so it's going to be fairly spread out. If you want more of this, you might want to follow my "Doom's Anatomy Tips" tag instead of following my blog.

Tumblr doesn't let me indent bullet points so this is structured a little confusingly. Feel free to ask any questions (just be open to the fact that it's possible I might not know the answer.)

PLEASE NOTE: there's a lot of Fancy Tedious Medical Names in these posts, but you don't need to actually remember them or tell the difference between them all. I only use the names so that it's easier to know what I'm referring to. So I might refer to areolar connective tissue or whatever, but the name of it isn't actually important, the important part is where it is and what it does. If you're confused about anything, let me know!

This post is about tissue types, which is great for knowing how different parts of the body heals. In this post, we talk about:

Some different types of tissue, where they're located, what purpose they generally serve, and how good they are at healing.

Tissue responses to injury - note that we'll get into individual systems' and locations responses to injury later on.

OK, lets go!

Certain types of tissues regenerate/heal better than others.

Epithelial tissue is one of the best at healing. We don't really need to get into what epithelial tissue is (there are 7 or 8 types that don't differ too much in their purpose, it's incredibly tedious to learn). We just need to know that it's great at healing and where it is (so that we can accurately portray the healing process in our writing/art).

Epithelial tissue is found in a lot of places. You might remember me mentioning epithelial tissue in my last post - serosae are made of epithelial tissue. Other places epithelial tissue are found include the top layer of skin (called the epidermis, we'll get into that in the next post), and the surface of the inside of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina. It's found in other places but I think these are the most important to know for writing. So these areas will heal faster - about as fast as a surface-level injury to the skin.

Epithelial tissue is always sitting on top of some underlying connective tissue. If the wound(s) are deeper, the wound will damage the underlying connective tissue - and connective tissue isn't quite as good at healing.

The next type of tissue is connective tissue. It's quite not as good at healing. Like epithelial tissue, there are a fuck ton of different types of connective tissue that are very tedious to learn. Unlike epithelial tissue, the different types of connective tissue actually differ in their functions sometimes.

Areolar Connective Tissue is basically a soft packaging tissue. It wraps around organs and capillaries (very small, delicate blood vessels) and cushions them. Areolar tissue is pretty good at healing - it has to be, because it houses white blood cells and fibroblasts (cell that forms fiber & connective tissue), which are the two main cells used in healing.

Adipose tissue (fat) is used for insulation and serves as a protective layer, which is why it's usually found around our softer parts. The hypodermis (the bottom layer of skin, sometimes called just subcutaneous tissue) is made mostly of fat, for example. Adipose tissue is thick and a bit harder to cut through. We'll get into it's insulation properties later in this post, since it works hand-in-hand with muscle tissue.

Dense Regular connective tissue makes up tendons, most ligaments, and fascia. It can withstand great amounts of tensile stress so long as the pulling force is pulling only in one direction. It's not super great at healing; if you tear a tendon, for example, it should heal, but it'll take a long time and it's function and elasticity will never be quite as good as it was before the injury. (in case you're wondering, ligaments attach bone to bone, while tendons attach muscle to bone).

Dense Irregular connective tissue is kind of the opposite of dense regular tissue. It's able to withstand forces pulling in multiple different directions. It forms the fibrous capsules of joints and the dermis of the skin. Dense irregular tissue is decent at healing, but it's not as good as epithelial, areolar, or bone tissue.

Next up is Cartilage. It's a type of connective tissue, but like epithelial tissue, the different types of cartilage mostly serve the same purpose.

First off, here are the two most important things to keep in mind for writing - 1) cartilage has a zero or near-zero regeneration rate. 2) cartilage has no nerve or blood supply. Keep this in mind when I mention where the cartilage is.

Cartilage mostly serves to cushion. Cartilage is found covering the ends of long bones in joints; In the nose, ears, trachea, and larynx; In the intervertebral discs; as costal cartilage (forming the parts of the ribs that attach to the sternum); In pubic symphysis (the point where the pubis bones in your pelvis attach, right around your crotch)

Cartilage's lack of regeneration abilities is what causes osteoarthritis. In a normal joint, the hyaline cartilage acts as a cushion with no nerve supply and almost no friction, so you can land on it, stretch it a little, rotate it, etc without any problems. But sometimes the cartilage deteriorates (i do not know exactly why), and so then you have bone scraping on bone, which sucks because bone does have a nerve supply, and also it's hard so it's pretty not great to land on, so it hurts like a motherfucker.

We all know that cartilage is in the nose and ear, but injuries to the nose often hurt a lot more than injuries to the ear, because the we use the nose to breath and stuff and therefore there's a lot of other types of tissue there as well. We also have a bone in our nose, and bones have nerve supply.

Injury to ears don't hurt too horribly! If you've ever gotten your ears pierced, you might've noticed that the sting from the needle feels mostly surface level, whereas if you got a puncture wound like that somewhere else, you'd feel some pain all the way down the injury. This is because of the cartilage. Some piercings to the ears (like a conch piercing) hurt a lot more - this is because while the cartilage has no nerve supply, the dermis (thickest part of the skin) does have a nerve supply, and there's a nerve like right there.

Next tissues - bone. This will be brief because everyone knows what bone does.

Bone is pretty good at healing. The problem is that bone is not super great at healing in the same shape it used to be. For example - remember when I mentioned how osteoarthritis works? Well, when bone is scraping on bone like that, the bone freaks out and tries to repair itself by building extra bone, resulting in osteophytes (bone spurs). Osteophytes don't just happen in response to arthritis, they happen in response to prolonged stress or damage in general. (IMPORTANT NOTE: it's kind of hard to explain what an osteophyte looks like, so I'd suggest looking up images BUT - it's best if you look up "bone spurs" or "bone spurs joints", since if you look up "osteophytes" like the 6th image is of a real, fresh bone that might be triggering since it looks a little bit gross.)

BONE HAS NERVES AND A BLOOD SUPPLY! There's a lot of people who don't know that, or at least never really thought about it. I kind of figured that there were nerves and blood vessels surrounding bone but not in the bone. I was wrong. There are nerves and blood in the bone.

Next up - Muscle!

The healing capacity of Muscle tissue differs based on type.

Smooth muscle is ok at healing. Not good, not bad. Smooth muscle is mostly found in the walls of hollow organs.

Skeletal muscle is poor at healing. Skeletal muscles are directly attached to bone and are the only muscles we can move voluntarily.

Cardiac muscle is found on the walls of the heart, and has no or almost no healing capacity.

Everyone knows most of what muscle does, but one thing you might not know is that muscles generate much of the body heat. A character with little muscle mass may have difficulty staying warm. (note that fat does not generate body heat, but instead acts like a blanket that retains the body heat.)

A mix of fat and muscle would be ideal for staying warm in cold temperatures. Lots of muscle but little fat, or lots of fat but little muscle aren't the greatest (note that it doesn't have to be a perfect balance - someone with an above average fat percentage and an average muscle percentage will be just fine). Being super skinny with little muscle or fat could be potentially dangerous in the cold. (this is why many people with slavic ancestry, for example, may have higher fat retention. This is also why native siberians and native canadian people have higher birth weights - their babies are born with more fat so they can survive the cold. Make your viking and slavic characters muscle-fat!)

As you increase in age, the healing capacity of your tissue decreases. In old age, your epithelial tissue thins (epithelial tissue is mostly used for protection), your collagen decreases (collegen is a protein fiber in skin), your bone and muscle tissue begin to atrophy, etc.

Now we get into Tissue Responses to injury:

There are two types - the inflammatory response and immune response. We're talking about the inflammatory response (we'll talk about the immune response when we get the the immune system).

The Inflammatory response is an acute/fast response. The inflammatory response is nonspecific, meaning it affects the general area around the injury as well as the injury itself. It's most commonly used in skin injuries - we've all experienced the inflammatory response. Before I continue I gotta briefly mention the layers of the skin. The epidermis is the surface level of skin made of fast-healing epithelial tissue. The dermis makes up the beefier part of the skin under the epidermis and is made of dense irregular connective tissue, so it's not as good at healing.

Symptoms of the inflammatory response include heat, redness, swelling, and pain. Here are the general "stages" of the inflammatory response (most of them assume that the dermis is injured)*:

Inflammation sets the stage. Severed blood vessels bleed. Inflammatory chemicals are released. White blood cells and clotting proteins seep into the injured area. Then clotting occurs, and the surface dries and becomes a scab.

Organization restores the blood supply. The clot is replaced by granulation tissue, which restores the blood supply. A type of white blood cell called a macrophage consumes dead or dying cells and other debris. The surface epithelial cells that make up the epidermis multiple and migrate over the granulation tissue (in short, the epidermis is healing faster than the dermis).

Regeneration and fibrosis effect permanent repair. This results in a fully regenerated epidermis/epithelium layer with scar tissue under it in the dermis.
