i feel like people think i’m mean for keeping my dogs inside/in their own yard/on my mom’s property and never really out in public but the reason for that is:
egan is reactive as fuck. WILL lunge at even a child if they run up on him
milo
ranger is terrified of everything he was found feral, beaten up, chunk missing from his ear, down to the Bones, dude trying to sh**t him, in a field in west texas. he pees himself with fear
ryker’s recall is ok unless he sees another dog then he’s OFF THE WALL and this is a dog we could barely teach to sit (had to literally get help for that) let alone to ignore other dogs. trying to train ryker is like trying to train a rock
pamela small animal enthusiast
#all my dogs r rescue dogs we took in BECAUSE they have behavioral issues#text#egan was our first rescue & was emaciated and anemic#he’s always been so so reactive and he’s gotten better over the years but we respect his boundaries aka don’t set him up to fail#we kept milo because he went on his 1748384th home visit and the husband of the family was#saying he would teach milo not to bite by forcing him to interact with people LOOOOOOL#WHICH IS HIGHKEY ABUSE AND NOT RESPECTING MILO’S BOUNDARIES AT ALL?#so i said fuck it and milo’s ours#we kept ranger for reasons stated above & because any time he met with a potential adopter#he would cower & pee on himself#because he’s terrified of new people and like yeah! he warms up well but being Outside is not comfortable for him#ryker is our disabled boy. my mom actually adopted him and then bought zeus and gave ry to me haaa#but bc he was confined to the house for the first 3-4 months of his life he’s p skittish#but sweet! he’s an on the fence boy#if i could figure out how to train him/what motivates him i would take him out more just not off leash#pamela is perfect girl but show her a small dog and she turns into a crackhead#and i’m just 1 person with no training experience i take my dogs on walks#and let them play on my mom’s land and (when the weather is nice) go canoeing with the ones who tolerate it (egan)#but for the most part i just. do what my dogs wanna do.#i know their language and read them well. i don’t care whether they can run in a field off leash i just wanna snuggle on the couch and go#for a few walkies

BOSTON — So you're Tim Scott, the Republican senator from South Carolina who opposes Roe v. Wade and wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and you get a call from Chris Evans, a Hollywood star and lifelong Democrat who has been blasting President Trump for years. He wants to meet. And film it. And share it on his online platform. Can anybody say "Borat?" “I was very skeptical,” admits Scott. “You can think of the worst-case scenario.”But then Scott heard from other senators. They vouched for Evans, most famous for playing Captain America in a series of films that have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. The actor also got on the phone with Scott’s staff to make a personal appeal.
It worked. Sometime in 2018, Scott met on camera with Evans in the nation’s capital, and their discussion, which ranged from prison reform to student loans, is one of more than 200 interviews with elected officials published on “A Starting Point,” an online platform the actor helped launch in July. Not long after, Evans appeared on Scott’s Instagram Live. They have plans to do more together.
“While he is a liberal, he was looking to have a real dialogue on important issues,” says Scott. “For me, it’s about wanting to have a conversation with an audience that may not be accustomed to hearing from conservatives and Republicans.”
Evans, actor-director Mark Kassen and entrepreneur Joe Kiani launched “A Starting Point” as a response to what they see as a deeply polarized political climate. They wanted to offer a place for information about issues without a partisan spin. To do that, they knew they needed both parties to participate.
Evans, 39, sat on the patio outside his Boston-area home on a recent afternoon talking about the platform. He wore a black T-shirt and jeans and spent some of the interview chasing around his brown rescue dog. Nearly 100 million people didn’t vote in the 2016 general election, Evans says. That’s more than 40 percent of those who were eligible. He believes the root of this disinterest is the nastiness on both sides of the aisle. Many potential voters simply turn off the news, never mind talking about actual policy.“A Starting Point” is meant to offer a digital home for people to hear from elected officials without having the conversation framed by Tucker Carlson or Rachel Maddow.
“The idea is . . . ‘Listen, you’re in office. I can’t deny the impact you have,’ ” says Evans. “ ‘You can vote on things that affect my life.’ Let this be a landscape of competing ideas, and I’ll sit down with you and I’ll talk with you.”
Or, as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who has appeared on the site, puts it, “Sometimes, boring is okay. You’re being presented two sides. Everything doesn’t have to be sensational. Sometimes, it can just be good facts.” Evans wasn’t always active in politics. At Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, he focused on theater, not student government. And he moved away from home his senior year, working at a casting agency in New York as he pushed for acting gigs. His uncle, Michael E. Capuano, served as a congressman in Massachusetts for 20 years, but other than volunteering on some of his campaign, Evans wasn’t particularly political.
In recent years, he’s read political philosopher Hannah Arendt and feminist Rebecca Solnit’s “The Mother of All Questions” — ex-girlfriend Jenny Slate gave him the latter — and been increasingly upset by Trump’s policies and behavior. He’s come to believe that he can state his own views without creating a conflict with “A Starting Point.” When he and Scott spoke on Instagram, the president wasn’t mentioned. In contrast, recently Evans and other members of the Avengers cast took part in a virtual fundraiser with Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala D. Harris.
“I don’t want to all of a sudden become a blank slate,” says Evans. “But my biggest issue right now is just getting people to vote. If I start saying, ‘vote Biden; f Trump,’ my base will like that. But they were already voting for Biden.”
(In September, Evans accidentally posted an image of presumably his penis online and, after deleting it, tweeted: “Now the I have your attention . . . Vote Nov. 3rd!!!”)
Evans began to contemplate the idea that became “A Starting Point” in 2017. He heard something reported on the news — he can’t remember exactly what — and decided to search out information on the Internet. Instead of finding concrete answers, Evans fell down the rabbit hole of opinions and conflicting claims. He began talking about this with Kassen, a friend since he directed Evans in 2011’s “Puncture.” What if they got the information directly from elected officials and presented it without a spin? Kassen, in turn, introduced Evans to Kiani, who had made his fortune through a medical technology company he founded and, of the three, was the most politically involved.
Kiani has donated to dozens of Democratic candidates across the country and earlier this year contributed $750,000 to Unite the Country, a super PAC meant to support Joe Biden. But he appreciated the idea of focusing on something larger than a single race or party initiative. He, Kassen and Evans would fund “A Starting Point,” which has about 18 people on staff.
“There’s no longer ABC, NBC and CBS,” Kiani says. “There’s Fox News and MSNBC. What that means is that we are no longer being censored. We’re self-censoring ourselves. And people go to their own echo chamber and they don’t get any wiser. If you allow both parties to speak, for the same amount of time, without goading them to go on into hyperbole, when people look at both sides’ point of view of both topics, we think most of the time they’ll come to a reasonable conclusion.”
“What people do too often is they get in their silos and they only watch and listen and read what they agree with,” says John Kasich, the former Ohio governor and onetime Republican presidential candidate. “If you go to Chris’s website, you can’t bury yourself in your silo. You get to see the other point of view.” As much as some like to blame Trump for all the conflicts in Washington, Sen. Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) says he’s watched the tone shifting for decades. He appreciated sitting down with Evans and making regular submissions to “Daily Points,” a place on the platform for commentary no longer than two minutes. During the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Coons recorded a comment on Judge Amy Coney Barrett and the Affordable Care Act.“ ‘A Starting Point’ needs to be a sustained resource,” Coons says. “Chris often talks about it being ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ for adults.”
It’s not by chance that Evans has personally conducted all of the 200-plus interviews on “A Starting Point” during trips to D.C. Celebrities often try to mobilize the public, whether it’s Eva Longoria, Tracee Ellis Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus hosting the Democratic National Convention or Jon Voight recording video clips to praise Trump. But in this case, Evans is using his status in a different way, to entice even the most hesitant Republican to sit down for an even-toned chat. And he’s willing to pose with anyone, even if it means explaining himself on “The Daily Show” after Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas posted a selfie with Evans. (Two attempts to interview Trump brought no response.) Murkowski remembers when Evans came to Capitol Hill for the first time in 2018. She admits she didn’t actually know who he was — she hadn’t yet seen any Marvel movies. She was in the minority.“We meet interesting and important people but, man, when Captain America was in the Senate, it was all the buzz,” she says. “And people were like, ‘Did you get your picture taken?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I sat down and did the interview.’ ‘You did an interview? How did you get an interview with him?’ ”What impressed Murkowski wasn’t his star power. It was the way Evans conducted the interview.“It was relaxing,” she says. “You didn’t feel like you were in front of a reporter who was just waiting for you to say something you would get caught on later. It was a dialogue . . . and we need more dialogue and less gotcha.”
“Starting Points” offers two-minute answers by elected officials in eight topic areas, including education, the environment and the economy. This is where the interviews Evans conducted can be found. “Daily Points” has featured a steady flow of Republicans and Democrats. A third area, “Counterpoints,” hosts short debates between officials on particular subjects. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, debated mail-in voting with Dusty Johnson, the Republican congressman from South Dakota.
“Most Americans can’t name more than five members of the United States House,” says Johnson. “ ‘A Starting Point’ allows thoughtful members to talk to a broader audience than we would normally have.”
The platform’s social media team pushes out potentially newsworthy clips, whether it’s Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) discussing his meeting with Barrett just before he tested positive for the coronavirus, or Angus King, the independent senator from Maine, criticizing Trump for his comments on a potential peaceful transfer of power after November’s election. Kassen notes that the King clip was viewed more than 175,000 times on “A Starting Point’s” Twitter account, compared with the 10,000 who caught in on CNN’s social media platform.
“Because it’s short-form media, we’re engineered to be social,” says Kassen. “As a result, when something catches hold, it’s passed around our audience pretty well.”
The key is to use modern tools to push out content that’s tonally different from what you might find on modern cable news. Or on social media. Which is what Evans hopes leads to more engagement. He’s particularly proud that more than 10,000 people have registered to vote through “A Starting Point” since it went online.
“If the downstream impact or the byproduct of this site is some sort of unity between the parties, great,” says Evans. “But if nobody’s still voting, it doesn’t work. We need people involved.”

I aspire to train dogs one day as a side gig, service dogs specifically, and I’ve always been a +R trainer. However, after reading your recent posts I am discovering that my training choices have been highly influenced by my dogs personalities as well as my own privilege. With my current dog, anything negative and he shuts down. He was abused, with the cigarette scars to prove it, and is very sensitive. However, when he was younger we did struggle with him and took him to training classes 1/
At the time, I had my parents supporting me and they were doing alright money wise so we could afford it. I couldn’t believe my friends who suggested I just get an e collar and be done with it when I could easily take him to classes. But now that I’m in a different situation financially, I can definitely sympathize with people who can’t afford to do that. I’m lucky in that I was able to learn a lot from professional trainers before I got to where I am now (scraping together pennies for food) 2/
And I think you’ve made some very valid points. I was always taught that it was your responsibility to train your pet, and while that’s true, it doesn’t suddenly give you the funds to handle sudden behavioral problems when they arise. When my dog became aggressive, I located trainers in my area who would work with him, and they wanted $200 a session. I can’t afford that. But luckily I have a yard to exercise him in and training knowledge to help him. Not everyone has those options. So yeah, 3/
keep talking about this, because it needs to spread in the dog training community. Since I’m not a professional trainer, I’ve only worked with dogs for free in the past and only on very basic things. But your post makes me want to learn more about how to help low income and POC with their dogs, and how to spread training knowledge in the first place. Like holding free clicker training clinics, going to low cost clinics and posting fliers for low cost training. Idk. But I want to help. 4
Also I know your whole point was not everyone can do +R (which I now agree with) but I feel like it would be useful to teach people the basics so they can work on behaviors in the home, or even for trick training! And sorry for all the messages, I’m processing a lot of information and I get very excited about dogs. 5/5
If you are serious about wanting to help PoC, something I do is low cost training for low income households on the side. Effectively, if someone approaches me saying they cannot afford my usual pricing ($80/1hr/at home) then I tell them instead to pay me what they can afford and what they feel is fair. This means that sometimes I get paid nothing (though that is quite rare), sometimes I get $20 or so, sometimes I get a pie, whatever. But this allows these clients to get the help they need with their dogs while also giving them the chance to keep their dignity and pride- many people do not like accepting free stuff/charity because they feel they do not deserve it. By telling them to pay me only what they feel they can part with, it allows them to feel as though they have given me some manner of compensation and thus it’s no longer me pitying them and they are paying for a service, even if it’s steeply discounted.
This does not put food on my table, it’s usually extra supplementary income on top of my full time job which is what actually pays my bills. I usually only take a few of these clients at a time because otherwise I’d be full of clients who honestly cannot afford me, and thus I would not be able to afford anything of mine either. But it DOES help them keep their dogs, and that’s what matters more to me tbh. I have a job to keep my lights on. It’d be nice to get the full amount, sure, but I don’t need it like they do.
It’s always the responsibility of the owner to train their pet, but let’s be honest here, when you get a dog that’s nice enough upon meeting, you’re not really expecting to need to cough up $200+ per session fixing an aggression issue. You’re not expecting a dog that needs multiple times per week of private training to move forward. This is the situation the woman tasing her dog fell into- her kids brought home a cute, nice enough puppy that she couldn’t easily be rid of (due to BSL) and he turned into an absolute monster upon adolescence and no one had any preparations for it. He went from being a happy, waggy tail, friendly dog to a dog that was putting holes in her, her kids, and their visitors. Now she really can’t be rid of him because if BSL didn’t kill him first, his bite record would eventually catch up to them. Sure, there’s a +R way to fix this behavior... but how fast is it? She has her children to worry about. She has her visitors to worry about. She has herself to worry about. And that’s not to mention that if anyone reports her dog as an aggressive pit bull (or even simply as a pit bull) he will be taken and killed by the state. She was between a rock and a hard place for a behavior issue in a dog she never asked for. Then she gets some seriously terrible advice and decides, why not, what’s she got to lose?
There is a reason I say that instead of legislating, why don’t we educate? Legislation is literally part of what caused this woman’s issue in the first place- if there was no BSL in that area, she could have given the dog to rescue when he was still a nice puppy and they could have gotten him into a foster home that would have started him on the path towards good behavior, instead of what she got instead. If she had been educated on the issues with a large, powerful, fighting breed that may or may not be pure and also may or may not hate dogs or even humans due to his genetic temperament or lack of correct socialization, maybe she would have sought out the cheaper petstore training first and would have caught the problem long before it turned into a dog no one could get near without earning a few level 4 bites. If the trainer she spoke to at Petco had educated her on better management while also doing their part to refer her out to any number of people in the area that would have helped (+R AND balanced), she would never have started tasing her dog.
Instead, I got to be the one to do all that.
The problem wasn’t even that she wouldn’t listen- her kids wouldn’t and that’s another story, but the adult in the situation was perfectly willing to make whatever changes she had to make in order to make sure her dog’s life was as good as it could be while also ensuring he didn’t continue to bite people. The problem was that she was ignorant and could not afford access to the information she needed. Without my low cost “pay what you can” offer, she would never have been able to get help for her dog. If the dog is already landing level 3 and 4 bites on people, it’s only a matter of time before that turns into a mauling or worse, the dog killing someone in that house. Or she would have landed herself in jail, using her taser on her dog every time he went after someone until he just up and died from the stress on his heart.
Instead, everyone was more concerned with giving conflicting opinions on whether she was wrong, meanwhile she literally couldn’t afford to be shown what was right.

Being Alone, Apparently, and Bad: Rambo Some, social, affectionate, housetrained, kid and cat friendly Neutered & Ready to start life anew With U! 58733 years old 50 bs Egg-specially Cute At ACC hoping Brookyn For a Second Chance **** TO BE KILLED - 4/6/2019 **** DOGS HAVE THAT INNATE SIXTH SENSE AND THEY KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Especially something bad. Like Sunday, March 31st... Rambo had a bad feeling and he jumped up on his owner and pawed at his wrist to let his owner know as they entered the lobby of the local shelter. It didn't work though. His owner signed him over to the shelter staff, told them they had no time for a pet and said Rambo is "kid and cat friendly, affectionate and housetrained" and exited the building, leaving his loyal companion behind forever. Fast forward four days and this young man has been added to the euth list, scheduled to die in 18 hours if he doesn't have a new home to go to. Rambo certainly doesn't deserve to die because his former owner no longer had time for him. He's just a year old, just starting life, and young enough to still be shaped and molded into your idea family pet with lots of love, reassurance and proper training. We know there has to be someone/a family out there with room in their heart and home for a handsome, young dude like Rambo. Please help us share him to the moon and back to catch the eye of that special person. Housetrained:: Yes Energy level/descriptors:: Rambo is described as affectionate and excitable with a very high level of energy. Summary:: Since Rambo's admission to the care center on 3/31/19, his behavior has remained highly fearful and he is wary of all handling. Upon attempts to rope him and bring him outside of his kennel for walks and interactions, Rambo attempts to flee, runs to the back of his kennel and urinates. During his walks, he is overly alert and pulls on the leash in an attempt to flee when he hears any loud noises. Collaring Rambo took several attempts, as he continuously avoided the collar and would not settle. During an interaction with caretakers, handlers and staff, Rambo was brought into the assessment room and was unable to settle or relax, but was easily startled by any noises and sudden movements. These observations are indicative of a very high level of fearfulness and stress. To eliminate the risk of increasing Rambo's stress level any further, along with the risk of redirecting the stress onto a handler or another animal in our care, we will not be conducting a handling assessment for Rambo at this time. Summary:: According to Rambo's previous owner, Rambo did not socialize with other dogs while in their care. Here at the Care Centers, Rambo has shown fearful behavior and avoidance. He briefly has shown interest in greeting but quickly fled when the other barked at him. The 4/2: We were unable to safely collar Rambo today. He was giving us clear distance increasing signs that he was very uncomfortable- whale eye, head flipping, attempting to flee. He did greet a novel male through the gate and moved away as quickly as possible. 4/3: After successfully collaring Rambo, he was introduced to a novel female dog. He tucked his tail and body when she greeted him but was tolerant. Rambo avoided the greeter for the rest of the session. 4/4: Rambo initially was moving towards greeting the novel female dog, but she barked he fled and kept his distance. Summary (1):: Rambo engages in play with tennis balls. Summary (2):: In Shelter Observations (Continued): 4/4/19: Upon approaching Rambo's kennel, he stood up and displayed a low wagging tail while walking forward toward the kennel door. His head was low, but he allowed the handler to place the rope around his neck with minimal flinching. The handler was able to walk him outside of the room and into the play pens for his interaction. Although Rambo displayed some wariness and was easily startled by loud noises, he engaged in play within moments of entering the pens, retrieving tennis balls, exploring and checking in with the handler. He had moments where he was able to settle and display an entirely loose and wiggly body while chasing the tennis balls, but would quickly revert to a tense posture, forward ears and high tail with loud noises. Rambo was also observed to solicit attention and seek contact, while leaning into the handler. At the end of his interaction, he was roped with ease and without flinching. The handler was able to walk him back into the care center and into his kennel without any pulling Date of intake:: 3/31/2019 Summary:: Anxious, pacing, jumps up, no handling performed, hard bark and growl at entering staff Date of initial:: 3/31/2019 Summary:: Muzzled, vocal, hyperactive, attempting to flee, resists handling, jumping up toward exit ENERGY LEVEL:: We are unable to accurately determine Rambo's energy level due to his high level of fearfulness observed in the care center. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 4/2/19: Rambo was laying in the front of his kennel when the handler approached. Upon opening the kennel door, Rambo stood up and showed fearful body language (low head, tucked tail, whale eye) and attempted to move toward the back of his kennel. The handler was able to introduce the rope and place it over Ramob's head, but he did flinch once the rope made contact. Rambo walked out of his kennel and room without issue and very minimal pulling. The handler took Rambo outside for his relief walk and Rambo was easily startled by cars driving by and any other loud noises. During the walk, Rambo encountered a staff member outside of the facility and approached readily with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. He jumped up onto the staff member and licked her hand. After his walk, Rambo was brought into a room for an interaction. During his interaction, Rambo was able to slowly acclimate and accepted some contact. After a few more minutes, his tail was untucked and he engaged in play with some tennis balls. Staff members knocked and entered the room, at which point Rambo reverted back to displaying fearful behavior, but was able to recover very slowly. He readily accepted treats with a very soft mouth. Handler was able to rope Rambo and bring him back to his kennel without any issue. 4/3/19: Rambo was laying down in his kennel upon approach and displayed low body posture when opening the kennel door. The handler was able to introduce the rope slowly, which Rambo initially avoided and flinched when it made contact with his neck. Rambo slowly exited his kennel and began to hard pull once outside of his room, moving toward the nearest exit. After his relief walk, wherein he was startled by loud noises and passing cars, he was brought back in the room for an interaction. Rambo was able to acclimate in less time overall and began to engage in play with the handler. He was also observed to understand the cue for "sit" and "give paw". After a few more minutes, Rambo was loose and wiggly and would play bow with handler. Another staff member entered the room and Rambo quickly reverted back to fearful behavior and became wary of interacting. It took about 7-8 minutes before Rambo was able to decompress and become comfortable with the staff member in the room before engaging in play once more. At the end of his interaction, the handler was able to rope him and walk him to his kennel with Rambo pulling moderately. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Rambo's overall level of fearfulness and potential for defensive aggression, we feel he would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Rambo's high level of fearfulness, the staff's inability to safely handle him without extreme caution, and his reported resource guarding in a previous home environment, it is recommended that Rambo would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced New Hope Partner to help manage this behavior. Rambo should be allowed to acclimate and decompress at his own pace in a more stable environment prior to permanent placement in an adult only home. We advise safe and appropriate management when handling Rambo, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Rambo to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Rambo has exhibited handling sensitivity during his interactions in the care center. Although Rambo has shown some improvement and allows some staff members to handle him with extreme caution, he has not been observed to completely settle during his interactions and flinches with initial contact. Rambo was observed to move away from handlers, avoid eye contact and was easily startled by sudden movements. Please refer to the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Rambo has exhibited a very high level fearfulness overall during her interactions in the care center. He was observed to escalate to growling and lunging at staff members. DON'T MISS OUT ON SOMETHING THAT COULD BE GREAT! <3 RAMBO@BROOKLYN ACC Hello, my name is Rambo My animal id is #58733 I am a desexed male bronze dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old, 50 lbs Came into shelter as owner surrender Mar. 31, 2019 Reason Stated: NO TIME FOR ANIMAL Rambo is rescue only Rambo was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Due to Rambo's high level of fearfulness, the staff's inability to safely handle him without extreme caution, and his reported resource guarding in a previous home environment, it is recommended that Rambo would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced New Hope Partner to help manage this behavior. Rambo should be allowed to acclimate and decompress at his own pace in a more stable environment prior to permanent placement in an adult only home. Rambo is otherwise healthy. Date of intake:: 3/31/2019 Spay/Neuter status:: Yes Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner surrender Previously lived with:: 3 Adults, 1 Child (17), 2 Cats Behavior toward strangers:: Fearful, growls and barks; Exuberantly plays with adults after warms up Behavior toward children:: Relaxed and playful, exuberant in play (w/resident child) Behavior toward dogs:: Unknown Behavior toward cats:: Relaxed and playful (w/resident cats) Resource guarding:: Previous owner has reported Rambo to growl if his food or treats are approached. This behavior is not observed with his toys. Bite history:: None reported. Although Rambo has shown some improvement and allows some staff members to handle him with extreme caution, he has not been observed to completely settle during his interactions and flinches with initial contact. Rambo has also been observed to display wariness and is easily startled by loud noises or sudden movements. Please refer to the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. A volunteer writes: Halloween may be over but here at the Manhattan Care Center we've still got a whole stash of chocolate-y treats and Hershey is the sweetest of them all! She may look serious but don't be fooled, her inner puppy is always ready to play and after a shy start she'll quickly warm up and join in the fun, chasing toys, leaning in for petting and even jumping up to give hugs on command. Hershey's a fine leash walker, responsive and seemingly house trained, and she knows her name too and will check in every so often with a cute little backwards glance as though making sure that the answer to 'who's a good girl?' is still 'Hershey'--which of course it is! She's been quite shy in playgroup so patient introductions to new four-legged friends would suit her best but it's easy to imagine such a gentle, well-mannered girl blossoming into the belle of the ball in no time. Apparently, Beautiful, and Cats: ww Id 65365, 3 Yrs., 150 lbs. Waiting for Cuddles, at the Manhattan ACC Big Hearted BLUE "A big lovable Bear and Lap Dog" said his parent. Low key, incredibly sweet, loves to be held and pet. A gentle, good boy. TO BE KILLED 6/20/19 Given up for “no time” a beautiful, big hearted, affectionate boy and his sister (Karma) are slated to die! ☹ “A big lovable bear and lap dog,” gushed Blue’s parent, just before they walked out the door on him, citing “NO TIME.” A low energy sweetheart, all he wanted was to lay around, be held, pet, and adored by his parent. He would follow this person around, just wanting to be near. With his sister Karma, he was the submissive of the two, and would look to her for cues on how he should behave. Blue loved his life, and he thought that it was secure, and that his parent would love him forever. So it’s incredibly hard for him at the shelter, and he has not been allowed to acclimate – he’s been there only TWO days. We are certain that if Blue was back in a family home, he would be his big mushy self, because that is the true spirit of this big gentle giant. He asks only for love, he asks only for safety and commitment from the person he gives his heart too. He has a wonderful resume, too! So please, if you are an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home (no kids under age 13) message our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance fostering or adopting this big hearted, kind and loving boy. BLUE, ID# 65365, 3 Yrs. Old, 150 lbs, Unaltered Male Manhattan ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray Owner Surrender Reason: NO TIME Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue Only Behavior Condition: 2. Blue I CAME TO THE SHELTER WITH MY SISTER KARMA (ALSO ON THE LIST): http://bit.ly/2MYNHpD AT RISK NOTE: Blue has shown concerning behavior both in the shelter environment and in his previous home, hard barking at handlers and lunging at strangers. We recommend placement with a New Hope Partner who can provide an experienced adult only foster home and necessary behavior modification. There are no medical concerns for Blue at this time. INTAKE NOTE – DATE OF INTAKE, 6/9/2019: Prior to intake, Blue was seen outside to be barking and lunging at passers by, mimicking his sister's behavior. Inside, he allowed a vet exam and seemed calm. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Blue is an approximately 3 year old intact male large mixed breed dog who was brought to MACC with his sister Karma 65363 as an owner surrender. He lived with 1 adult. Blue responds differently to different strangers. He sometimes barks at people he doesn't know. Has not spent much time with children. At first, would bark around children they see . After retraining with owner, does not bark around children. Blue is described as just wanting to play with other dogs. Blue has no experience with cats. He does not guard his resources. Blue has no known bite history. He is partially housetrained and has a low energy level. Other Notes: Blue gets walked twice a day, but sometimes has pee accidents in the home Not destructive of items in the home Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: Yes, Ear infection in both ears. For a New Family to Know: Blue is described as a big lovable bear and a lap dog by owner. He is the less dominant out of him and his sister and he will follow suit in her actions and behavior. He enjoys laying down and loves being pet. He loves all toys given to him. Knows commands like jump, sit, touch down (lay down), gimme five Eats dry food. Likes all treats. Was given hot dogs by previous owner. Owner took to groomer and it went fine At home, follows owner around and wants to be close. Slept on floor or couch SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES - Date of assessment: 6/11/2019 Summary:: The previous owners report that Blue is uncomfortable around some strangers and will bark at them. At the care center, Blue was reported to hard bark at handlers when they attempted to leash him and remove him from his kennel. He also was reported to bark and lunge at strangers while on leash outside. Erring on the side of caution, we feel that Blue is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake:: 6/9/2019 Summary:: Barking and lunging at people outside, calm inside MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 6/9/2019 Summary:: Calm ENERGY LEVEL:: Blue is described as having a low level of energy. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: The previous owners report that Blue barks at some strangers and used to bark at children. At the care center, he was seen barking and lunging at strangers while on leash and hard barked at handlers when they attempted to remove him from his kennel. Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend an adult-only home for Blue. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home and shelter environment, including barking and lunging at strangers, and hard barking at handlers when they attempt to remove him from his kennel, the behavior department recommends Blue be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: The previous owners report that Blue is only partially housetrained and may have accidents in the home. Please see handout on House soiling. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Blue is reported to bark at some strangers, bark at children at times, and hard bark at handlers when they attempted to remove him from his kennel. This suggests that his is uncomfortable around some strangers and with handling, displaying a potential for defensive aggression. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Being Alone, Bailey Jay, and Cats: ld 55662, 3 Yrs., 62 lbs. Brooklyn ACC Patches A prisoner in his home, never taken outside, a lonely youngster hopes for a life he's only dreamed of TO BE KILLED - 3/2/19 “He was too much for me to handle, so I never took him out of the home on walks” The unbelievable words that blurted out of the parent of poor PATCHES. He had to just do his business inside the house on the floor, he had to be happy with the four walls that were his prison, his few toys that he would hang on to, and sometimes “howl” over. Sometimes we can’t contain ourselves here at MLD and get so angry. Poor Patches, he just wanted to be a dog like every other young dog. He wanted to go outside and play. He tried, he really did, to get outside and see the world, but every time he would be dragged back inside. He needed exercise, he needed mental stimulation, he needed parents that would give him the time, patience and training every puppy needs. He needed a friend. Now Patches finds himself out in the world, the world he always wanted to see, but it is not what he had dreamed or hoped for. Instead it is a small windowless kennel, barking and whining dogs who miss their families all around him, and strangers he has never met, and was never allowed to meet during his life with his parents. This kid needs a chance, he needs to be a dog, he needs to be loved and given the life he has only dreamed of, and not death. Please save his life. If you are an experienced foster or adopter, in an adult only home, hurry and PM our page or email us at [email protected] to foster or adopting her now. As a staff member who loved Patches writes: "A staff member writes : I have found the best hugger in the world !!!! His name is patches and he is just amazing !! He doesn't really like being in his kennel . but that's because he cant hug you from in there . He walks good on the leash and loves looking at his human just to make sure that you are still by his side . Once I let him free in the play yard , he found his way right to my lap . He loves to gives hugs and rest his head on your chest . And if you move your hand from rubbing him he places his head in your hand as if he is saying " why you stop hooman ??" When he is ready to take a break from all the loving he has to give , he enjoys roaming around , zooming all over the place . Now add a ball to that and you got yourself a game of catch. Patches is super sweet and loving . This dog just loves to give love and loves to get love back . He just needs the right person to share that with . He had sewn a patch of love in my heart forever !!!" MY MOVIE! Please watch it. I'm a good boy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptExDTI1Y6o PATCHES, ID# 55662, 3 Yrs. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

Andrew Bogut, Apparently, and Bailey Jay: Td 50714, 1 Mos 54 Ibs., Neutered Brooklyn ACC Carmelo "..his personality made me laugh & he bounced right into my heart. Carmelo loves to fetch, loves to snuggle and loves to kiss." A Volunteer TO BE KILLED 1/19/2019 ***CARMELO HAS A $200 PLEDGE FROM A PRIVATE DONOR TO THE PULLING RESCUE*** A staff member writes: "When I first met Carmelo his beauty amazed me. When I first interacted with him his personality made me laugh and when he bounced right into my heart he is always on my mind. Carmelo loves to fetch, loves to snuggle and loves to kiss. He is waiting for someone to share this expernce with. Come to Brooklyn ACC and meet Carmelo." CARMELO is a gorgeous puppy, barely 11 months old, and full of joy and love for people. He spent all his time during intake trying to jump up on the ACS trying to get a hug, and it didn’t stop there! During his behavior, this soft, social, incredibly affectionate boy just wanted to give jump up hugs and sloppy kisses to the Assessor too! There is nothing more heartwarming than to see puppy who is so innocent and sweet, a puppy whose tail is nothing but a blur as he wilggles and wags for the amusement of his new human friends. There is also nothing as heartbreaking as knowing that he has no idea he will soon die, and that his precious life will be cut short simply because his parent seemed to be inexperienced with dogs and dog training, and never bothered to give little Carmelo a structured home life, or training on calming commands like “down” and “place”, so that Carmelo's enthusiasm and puppy playfulness could be channeled in a way that would allow him to remain calm in the face of life’s distractions. We are questioning his parent's story as well, because puppy mouthiness can be confused with nippiness. It's important to understand the difference! And that's just one more puppy trait that needs training! Just like human children, a puppy needs guidance. CARMELO is a winning combination of good looks, eagerness to please, eagerness to learn, and over the top affection. He is GREAT with other dogs too. Don’t let this precious youngster die, Hurry and MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] right now for assistance fostering or adopting him so his life can be saved. MY VIDEO! Brooklyn ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Tri-Color, Neutered Male I came to the shelter as a Stray, 1/3/2019 Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue Only Intake Behavior Rating: 1. Green AT RISK MEMO: Though we don't have any history of Carmelo's behavior on his previous Home we do know that he has a bite history and that he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We are recommending placement with an Experienced rescue partner at this time based on the challenges that he present. Carmelo is otherwise Healthy. INTAKE NOTES – DATE OF INTAKE, 1/3/2019: Upon intake no handling was done by counselor Animal Care Specialist took Carmelo from the surrender. Carmelo was jumping up on the ACS trying to show affection and was just sniffing around. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Carmelo was brought into BACC due to him biting the surrenderer. He previously lived with 2 adults. Carmelo has a high energy level. He has never had any medical issues. It’s unknown if he is housetrained. Bite history:: Carmelo was sitting with his owner’s friend and when the owner’s friend attempted to leave the room he barked; when he attempted to calm him down, he bit him on the foot. SHELTER ASSESSMENT – Date of assessment: 12/18/2018 Look:: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor's face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog's mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft. Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Toy:: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary:: Carmelo was soft, social and attention seeking throughout. PLAYGROUP NOTES – DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES: Carmelo was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/18: When off leash at the Care Centers, Carmelo greets the novel female dog with a soft body. He whines throughout the session and explores the yard. 12/19: Carmelo is slightly more social today. He focuses on the greeter's rear end but moves away when interrupted. INTAKE DATE - Date of intake:: 12/17/2018. Summary:: Anxious, barking, whining though loose bodied and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Carmelo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Carmelo has displayed social behavior in the care center throughout the majority of his stay, however, because of our lack of details regarding his most recent bite incident, we believe he may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess his behavior in stable home environment.

He was calm, polite and waggy when meeting doggy-girls in playgroup. Please share! A volunteer writes: Gideon is a big guy! Dogs come in all sizes, shapes and colors but they usually like the same things. Being a man's (woman's) best friend, meeting their peers, sampling treats and playing. Gideon is no different. Besides liking my dry liver bits (he finished my whole bag of treats), Gideon is a pro at ball playing, although he loves toys, too. He will sit most of the time, waiting for the throw and sometimes will fetch, hoping for another one. He is quite energetic, powerful, playful, friendly and absolutely gorgeous in his perfectly groomed coat. He has been so well cared for by his former family who left him with us with excellent comments. Gideon would be friendly to people, love kids, play a bit rough with other dogs, enjoy grooming and be fine when left alone in the house. Cats would not be his favorite!
