It's that time of the year again when Evangelical Christians rant about how "true Christians" shouldn't celebrate Halloween, while a bunch of terminally online Christians and Atheists will claim not only Halloween is Christian but also somehow has no real pagan roots, or that these things came into being whole and true without any prior thing existing before it, or that pagans never had any culture aside from sacrificing and having a few gods they worshiped. Or you get the Christians who repeat stuff that was already considered a fallacy back when they created, like the "great god Samhain" and Druids worshiping Baal and throwing children and cats into fires so they can drink their blood. Or the very thought of something being one thing cancels it out or the idea that Christian is synonymous with "good" vs pagan which gets synonymous with "bad" or "wrong" or "evil."
The truth is that Halloween is both Christian and pagan; the name comes from the term "All Hollow's Eve", used to denote the day before all saints were commemorated. However, it does have roots in ancient harvest festivals from Celtic times, especially Samhain, which is still used as the word for Halloween in Gaelic and Welsh languages. Some of the activities associated with Halloween may have been from Samhain activities, with divination games and leaving food out for the Ao si, being a sort of precursor to soul-caking and later along the line trick or treating. If anything you need to know, the whole aspect of mingling Christian and celtic pagan traditions seem to be a huge thing in Irish and Scottish history, media like The Wolfwalkers,The Song of the Sea and The Secret of Inish Roan showcasing that.
As for anyone interested in Halloween history, may I suggest a few books:
Lesley Pratt Bannatyne. Halloween: An American Holiday, An American History.
Lisa Morton. Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween.
David S. Skal. Halloween: A History of America's Darkest Holiday*
*I put an asterisk there because Skal is a journalist rather than a historian

I Took a Job in a Cemetery
All right, I was encouraged to do a scary story for All Hollows Eve aka Halloween. Couldn’t think of one at the top of my head. Lately I have too many distractions to think of writing another story. But I guess that will happen soon enough. In the meantime, I came across this channel a few months ago called “Lighthouse Horrors.” The dude has some pretty good horror stories.  This one is a good…
