Console Sports Games of 1993 - Wimbledon Championship Tennis

The first entry in the Wimbledon series of tennis games and the first to use the All England Lawn Tennis Clubs licence, based on the oldest Grand Slam Tennis tournament Wimbledon Championship Tennis debuted in 1992 on the Game Gear before being ported to the Sega Master System and Genesis in 1993. 

It was developed by the Japanese studio SIMS Co and published by Sega and Tec Toy Indústria de Brinquedos. While the game has the Wimbledon licence that is all that is licenced, no real player names instead you get the likes of S Evens, V Franko and K Bishop.

A total of 16 players for the Sega Master System version of the game, the Genesis port ups that number to 24 with a 50/50 split between male and female players. 

The usual mix of game modes is on offer with exhibition matches for up to 2 players, when choosing a player they will each have a selection of stats for things like serve power, backhand control and footwork. 

The main mode of Wimbledon Championship Tennis is the tour mode, this mode allows players to create their own player and assign stats to them, although this is limited, tour mode allows you to compete in a variety of bracket-based tournaments.

From one CHAMPION to another CHAMPION: Novak Djokovic's lovely statement about the Princess of Wales:

"It's wonderful to have that kind of support from the royal family."

After a brutal loss, The Daily Express (of course 🙄) came to Novak's press conference just to gather information about Catherine. Nole, being All Around Amazing, handled the question like a true Champion:

Q: What did it mean to have the Princess of Wales here today because obviously it was the first time we've seen her in Wimbledon given she's got this health battle and I just wondered what you said to her and what she said to you because obviously you've spoken so many times in the past...

AAA Novak: Yes it was of course a privilege to be in her presence again and I said to her that it is very nice to see her in good health. She seems to be in good health so that's obviously very positive news for everyone in this country, but also for Wimbledon--- for championships---- to have Her Royal Highness here of course with her family members. It's amazing. It's incredible support that they've been giving over the years to this tournament and I know that she and her sister (PIPPA 🎾) have played tennis for a very long time and so they TRULY respect and admire the game, and they also understand tennis which is great to have. It's wonderful to have that kind of support from the royal family.

Once in a while I get a Yearning for volleyball and I guess that's why I want (read: will) write that volleyball AU.

But I'm thinking about it again and I guess, when I look back later in life, volleyball will always be my biggest what if.

I played it for 11 years, before I had to quit because it didn't fit in my schedule anymore. I wasn't too upset about it then; I still hold a grudge against the club I played for because of clear favoritism. If you weren't the absolute best, you'd get the worst time slots to train, and there was a time my team even had to train ourselves. There was no way to improve yourself, because all the actual resources went to the top teams.

And I was one of the best on my team. But due to circumstances, I never moved up (now, at 26, I think I finally realize what those circumstances were, and it will never not upset me).

So when I quit, it wasn't the end of the world.

But then i moved to England in 2020 to do my Erasmus there, and decided to join the university volleyball club because I was lonely and looking for connection and I knew volleyball. And it was there that I found out that my belief that I thought i was any good at it wasn't wrong. Within a few weeks I was already training with the mixed team, and with the university's women's team. Their coach even told me that if I were to do a master's degree at the university the following year, and thus be a student for a full year, I'd make the team. But for the rest of the season, I could be a back-up player. I was playing for the local club too, and tournaments and once every two weeks I'd chip in 2 pounds to just play a low-stakes match with friends from the club and it was so fun, I didn't realize I had missed it so much.

Then COVID hit and I had to move back home and finished my Erasmus virtually. But I will never stop thinking about what might have happened if COVID had never happened. If, if i'd been there longer, i would have not been able to let it go again. Would I have chosen volleyball over my board year? Would I have stayed in England? Would I still be there now?

Volleyball took a lot from me, but it also gave me so much when I needed it. I know I'll never play again, because if I play I want competition and I don't have time two train for two hours a week + a match on Saturday, but I still wonder what might have been if I'd stayed.
