Are your old-school photos labeled & organized in albums📒? Most of our pictures are in boxes, loosely grouped by the decades, but not really🗃️. A few are occasionally pulled & end up in a separate box📥. They’re the ones mostly seen here. My personal digital photos aren’t much better🤳. I don’t know how it is for you, but the core people in my life generally stay in my life🤗. A few are either jettisoned or fade along the way🚫. It’s not that different from friends on IG. Sometimes I think about a friend here that I haven’t seen for a long time & try to find them⌛. Do you do that? I mention disorganized photos📚 because I was looking for a Polaroid I took of a friend, @lauraurbanperry & couldn’t find it! I was going to include it here🤷‍♀️. Laura worked as a graphic designer & web designer & we first met in the late ‘70s/early ’80s 👭. Monday, I was scheduled to send page designs & images for a website to a WordPress developer💻, but Sunday night, the developer bailed🏃‍♀️. So, Monday was chaotic😲, but thankfully, Laura helped me connect with Scott Marlow, a WordPress pro🤝. Hooray🎉 Scott is smart & talented👍, pleasant, professional & efficient, plus he used to live in West Seattle, not far from our store, @alkisurfshop🏖️. So, we are off & running, thanks to Laura🏃‍♂️! They say old friends are best🏆. It’s beautiful how longtime friends come through for us. I feel such gratitude to the terrific people in my life🙏. So, I grabbed photos from the past 5 decades, Including @barbarajweaverlloyd in the 1970s, me & my husband in the 2000s, & @jackandpele at Alki Surf shop in 2016. It’s a lost cause for us to organize our photos into albums🖼️, so they will stay in boxes. But I love real photographs. They’re tangible reminders of moments in time 🕰️. Are your photos organized🤔? I’ve driven my BMW 2002 🇩🇪 for 46 years. Last weekend there was a 2002 meetup near @AlkiSurfShop 🏖️. I arrived at the end, & about 10 cars were still there 🚘. CAR STORIES How did you learn to drive 🚙? I took driver’s education in high school. It was great because: • High school teachers 🧑‍🏫 picked up extra cash 💵 teaching kids to drive • Students had affordable access to learning 🎓 • It was “fun” to learn with classmates 👫 In 2002 Washington State stopped funding driver’s ed, but with crashes among teens rising 📈, funding may be returning 💰. I knew nothing about cars when I was 17 🧒. I remember being behind the wheel & seeing terrified male classmates in the rearview mirror 😲. My driving teacher kept his foot poised on the instructor’s safety brake pedal. At first, I was awful ❌. The good news is I became a good driver 👏. FULL OR EMPTY? Do you know the phrase “Semper Paratus?” It means “Always Ready.” I like this motto. It might explain why I usually have a full gas tank ⛽. I feel the same way about my phone battery 📲. During a family gathering at @horsemarkcards, my phone was at 60% & I wanted to charge it before heading back to Seattle 🧭. I wondered if I was a weirdo, so I took a poll. I found people fell into 2 camps: 🔼Those who keep their cars fueled & phones charged 🔽Those who drove until their vehicles were on empty & let their phones get to 2% Today I met @alanabramowitz 📷 & I asked where he is on the spectrum 🌈? We’re kindred spirits 🤗. He calls it OCD, but I call it being prepared 🦸! Is there a regular, in-between type? I’ve yet to find one. Maybe you’re the first 🤷? Are you always prepared, or do you live dangerously? And how did you learn to drive 🤔? . . When you find something curious, do you investigate? 🔎 Tuesday, I dug into the mystery 🧐of a vintage gold Goldring fountain pen. I became aware of fine writing instruments in my late 20s ✍️when a client gave me a gold & burgundy Montblanc pen & pencil set. Over the years I've acquired some fancy rollerballs & fountain pens.✒️ They’re special, 🥰 & I remember how I came to have them. I’ve been spring cleaning, sorting through boxes, drawers & cubbies. 📦 As I decide what to keep, toss, 🗑️recycle♻️ or donate, 🛍️ I’m using “If in doubt, throw it out,” as a guide. A German Goldring pen with an iridium nib turned up. 🖋️ It was familiar. I figured it was a “garage sale” purchase. I took it apart to clean it🧼🧽. As I slid open the pen barrel, I saw an odd component with a dolphin insignia.🐬 I didn’t know if it could be freed, but I got it out & inspected. On the flip side was a rubber stamp with the name, “George Xxxx.” 🗺️ It showed his address in West Seattle near our store, Alki Surf Shop.🌴 It was cool for a pen to have a built in stamp & blotter & I wondered if George was still around? 🤔 After a quick Google search of George’s name & address, 🧐 the first hit was a property database 🏡. It suggested he’s probably either very old or no longer alive. I was curious, but not a stalker, so the search ended there. 🤷‍♀️ Search engines like Whitepages, US Search & others 🔍 find people & dig up contact information. ℹ️ There are search engines for finding email addresses, too. 📨. TO FIND A PHONE #, EMAIL OR ADDRESS ON GOOGLE, start by typing into search: 👉Name+City+phone 👉Name+City+email 👉Name+City+address It’s freaky how easy it is to find people. But in the past, each year personal information was printed & distributed to everyone in something called the Phone Book☎️📕! Have you ever tried to find an old friend? 👫👭👬 How did it go? . . . Hey, guys. How was your week? I hope it was great! Most days I rate at about 85%, but today was creeping up to 90% despite the schizophrenic weather (rain, hail, sun, repeat). ☔❄️🌞⁣ ⁣ Instagram can be such an amazing place, and in some ways mimics our real world lives. 🌍🌎🌏 I think we are attracted to the same kinds of people in both places, don’t you?⁣ ⁣ There are our besties, 💕 and our social friends. 💫 We can encounter great conversationalists, 👥 smart people and thinkers. 🧠 And people who can make us laugh, 😄 people who warm our hearts, 💗 and those who are reserved but we know they are kind, good people who would be interesting to meet in real life 👍 (you know who you are, Frank, David, Nick).⁣ ⁣ We can run into our good chums, stop and chat and smile because they brighten our lives. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 And there are those we see rarely, but what joy to cross paths and to catch up when we do! 💃 People who exchange comments and give their time and attention to us engender feelings of connectedness and gratitude. 🙏 For me, I feel a real kinship with them.⁣ ⁣ I’ve noticed there are others whose posts I see, like, comment on, but they aren’t at all interested in me. 😟 It seems harsh to unfollow someone who is following you, ⛔ So, by muting posts and stories of those who never engage, you gain more opportunities to see the people who make IG such a happy place! 😍⁣ ⁣ A recent sampling (beyond some of my good friends like @sensastone, @gilboa_mountain and @masaya5656) are tagged above.🗣️⁣ ⁣ Do you see the little “head” icon in the bottom left corner? ⚫ If you click on it, a list of people will pop up. The Seattle summer sun on Friday ☀️ was “better-late-than-never." I drove 🛣️ to #AlkiSurfShop to meet "Mogelgaard" for lunch. While we were hanging around the store chatting with Kahuna Dave, more friends, Sue and Ralph, stopped in and joined the confab. 🧜🕺💃🤸 It was real-life but also felt like seeing your favorite friends on Instagram! ☺️⁣ ⁣ Walking out of #Pepperdock, I spotted @d.sataraka's daughter, who was lunching with her grandpa. I recognized her from Instagram and introduced myself. 🤳 He must have thought I was either a stalker or weirdo 😱 because he seemed suspicious until I blurted out, “And her mom and dad are Raiders fans!” Then he realized I was probably OK! 👌⁣ ⁣ The lines between virtual and real life can blur or cross over. 👓 I'm tagging a few favorites from real-life and social media 👫. All are interesting, nice and engaging, and many share wonderful content. I “think” most have public accounts. 🗺️⁣ ⁣ Maybe take a look at some of them and follow if you like. 🔎⁣ ⁣ And on another note — this will be my final week of summer break until fall quarter starts. 🌞 I'm in the 4th round of edits on my uncle’s manuscript and I'm trying my best to clean it up for the next review by family. 👩‍💻⁣ ⁣ We have a “Kamon” (Japanese family crest) 🌸 for the “Nakamura” family, but I have only a small blurry copy of it. I've found many versions and so far none looks quite like the one I have. A few more captures of the ever-morphing ocean remind me of reasons why I love Alki Beach in Seattle. 🏖️ . . Alki's tides rolling in and out, let Seattle city dwellers believe we are somewhere other than a city. 🌊 . . The salt water air, sea birds calling overhead, and the assorted funky buildings lining the road make you feel like you're passing through a small beach town instead of a neighborhood in the land of Amazon, Starbucks, Boeing and Microsoft. . . At low tide you won't find razor clams, but you'll find tide pools with starfish ⭐, crabs, 🦀 small (almost invisible) jellyfish, and evidence of other sea creatures. You might even see Orcas frolicking in the bay. 🐬 . . The ocean is a 2.5 hour drive from the city. It is beautiful and there is plenty of free parking. Alki is 15 minutes across the water. It is beautiful and has plenty of free parking. . . Most of us don't have an entire day to drive to and from the ocean. But 15 minutes offers a doable alternative to feel the peace and beauty of the sea. 🐟 . . I'm not sure if this is a coleus, but I like how the fuschia-colored leaves bleed into the gold.💗+💛 It's amazing! . . I shot this image outside the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle a couple of months ago as I was leaving the Seattle Gift Show, produced by Urban Expositions and Clarion UX. 📸 . . Gift shows or expos help stores find merchandise. 🎁 They bring together representatives, importers and manufacturers of products from near and far so stores can source new products. 🏄‍♀️ At Alki Surf Shop, we design clothing, accessories and items for our store, but need exposure to trends and inspiration, and sources for other products, too. 🏖️ 🤽 🎸 . . ❗Next week we are excited to check out the Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center! It will be our first time at this epic event and we are honored to attend as guests of the exposition. We know a number of our existing suppliers will be there, but there will be hundreds more that we will see for the first time. 👀 . . Alki Surf Shop in its fifth year, which is pretty good considering neither my husband or I had any retail experience prior to starting our store. Well, that's not completely true...we both shopped a lot. 😉 We also have years of experience designing & writing advertising and creating print collateral for retail stores, including Nordstrom. . . The next time you walk into an independent retail shop, consider this: most everything you see has been curated by the shopkeepers. In our case, that would be my husband and me! 🛍️ . . “Labor Day Weekend” is the signal that it’s time to say goodbye to summer. 🏖️ The U.S. Labor Day holiday is Monday. After that, for many kids, school starts. 🎒⁣ ⁣ Speaking of the U.S., “likes” 👍 are still visible here. As far as I could find, the countries where the hidden likes have been tested are 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇦🇺 Australia, 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇯🇵 Japan and 🇳🇿 New Zealand. Instagram hasn’t indicated when it will roll out worldwide. 🌐⁣ ⁣ Last week I came across an article about “shadowbanning” on Instagram. Do you know what that is? 👥⁣ ⁣ Shadowbanning is when your content will be seen only by people who are already following you. 🕶️ As a result, your images can receive fewer likes and comments, especially as it relates to content discovered via hashtags. #️⃣⁣ ⁣ Sometimes a hashtag will lead people to you or your content. If you have a business account, you can see how many people have discovered your content by searching for the hashtags you use. 🔎⁣ ⁣ The shadowban blocks users whose behavior violates Instagram’s "terms of service." 🛑 According to Hubspot, it affects users who are using tools to increase their followers through automated apps, misleading or broken hashtags, or by using bots. 🤖 ⁣ ⁣ ☑️ You can find out if your account has been shadowbanned by posting an image with a hashtag that isn't often used. Then ask several people who DON’T follow you to search 🔭 for the hashtag. If none finds your post, there is a chance you’ve been shadowbanned. 🚫⁣ ⁣ If you have been banned, there are ways to fix it. This is a #flashbackfriday❤️ to #2016. In November 2016, @lorimcneeartist and I shared a suite at the W Hotel in LA 🏨 while we attended a Twitter #140conf hosted by @jeffkenipulver. Lori, 🎨@adamleipzig 🎬 and I 📝 formed a panel to discuss brand building for creatives. It was a rare chance to meet social media friends and hear TEDx-style talks 💬 and panel discussions. 🎤 Adam had to cancel, but it didn’t stop the three of us from meeting up one evening. Adam works in the film industry, 🎭 and had produced a documentary called A Plastic Ocean. 🎞️ I hadn’t seen it, but I watched it when I got back to Seattle and have to say it really affected me. Have you seen it? 🌊Five years later I still think about it! In fact, I began buying more aluminum containers ♻️ instead of plastic bottles, but tonight, as I cut away the plastic film enclosing a case of LaCroix, I realized even when you think you’re doing something good there are built-in problems. 🙄 Despite what we’re told, #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs meet the standard for plastic recycling 🤔 and the rest will likely end up in a landfill, the incinerator 🔥 or add to the 150 metric tons of plastic currently polluting our oceans. 🐋🐢🐟 What to do? Have you changed any of your habits to help the environment? 🌎🌍🌏 . . . . The week has been a blur. Did you catch a glimpse of the Wolf moon?⁣ 🌕⁣ ⁣ Some of you are morning doves, 🕊️others are night owls🦉and some are in between 🐦. Since the lockdowns began, I’ve been staying up later and later. I’m now at the point where I see U.S. friends on IG who are just waking up as I’m heading to bed 🌛 ⁣ I don’t follow fashion news,👗 but an article popped up in my news feed from “Glamour” magazine. It was about “Revenge bedtime procrastination.” Have you heard of it? I hadn’t, either. Sounds ridiculous, right? The weird thing is, I think I’m engaging in it!⁣ ⁣ It boils down to feeling we are entitled to spend time doing stuff we enjoy doing – watching a show, 🎞️ reading a book,📖 perusing the Instagram timeline 📱— but when our days are filled with things we must do, we feel shortchanged when we don't have time for fun stuff.
