News - In a recent interview, James Cameron mentioned selling his California ranch, giving the following reasons:
"And on Avatar, I'm working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I'll be working in Austin, so it just didn't make sense for us anymore."
This is great news for Alita fans, who have been clamoring for more ever since the first film in 2019. Hopefully this means we will be getting those sequels!

Bonus: (Ruronin Kenshin, Deathnote Jap. Version, Bleach & Gintama)
Tumblr media
It’s too early to labeling OPLA as one of the best anime adaptation. but so far, it’s kinda fun and decent watching this with Japan dub (because I hear voiced by OG Seiyuu) in the first episode. Pretty glad, they learned after Cowboy Bebop and also Oda’s involvement in this project at least can improve this live action.

Wanted to make a rec post about a bunch of random sci-fi manga i like and hope that others enjoy as well.
Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction:
A story about 2 young women in their day to day lives as a giant alien ship looms over Tokyo. A fair bit of the story focuses modern social political issues in Japan and the mystery surrounding the mothership and the aliens and why they are there.
The series will get two movie adaptations later this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dai Dark:
The story mainly revolves zaha sanko and how a legend exist that if one gets ahold of his bones they will have any wish granted to them, and so sanko needs to search through space in order to find whoever put this curse on him and kill them. The manga is made by Q Hayashida and features a very gritty world with very goofy and fun characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm:
A story mostly about a cyborg with a sense for battle wanting to fin her origins after crashing on earth. The series has 3 entries so far with the third being on hiatus sadly, the 3 series being Alita battle angel, baa last order and baa mars chronicle. However the series has excellent art a very good story and great action.
It currently has a 1993 anime and a live action movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
20th Century Boys
The story revolves around a group of adults who in their youth created a symbol to represent their friendship which is then used by some malevolent character called friend in the future for his own cult and his goal to take over the world. With most of the story being about trying to recall who he may be and how to stop his plot. Its a VERY story and dialogue heavy series, but its all worth it once everything starts clicking.
it has a short sequel series that contains the ending of the actual series called "21st century boys"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pluto
Made by the same person as 20th century boys Naoki urasawa, its an adaptation of "the greatest robot on earth" story with its own unique spin. Its about the ongoing murders of the seven most powerful robots on earth. It deals in a lot of stuff about the sentience of the robots and their rights.
It currently has a full anime adaptation on netflix.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Planetes
A lot of the story mainly focuses on the struggles and relationships of the main characters with space mainly being a backdrop. Its a very interpersonal story and i can't really do it justice by just describing it so i recommend reding or watching it yourself.
It also has a full anime adaptation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
10,000 light year binoculars
This one is just a oneshot but i enjoyed it so much that i really had to rec it. Its about an alien girl with binoculars that allow her to spy on a boy on earth from her own planet and wanting to meet him someday. The entire oneshot is in color, the art is great AND its short.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Star tripper: Planetarium Ghost Travel
A very comfy manga that only recently stared to get fantranslated. Its about a guy called 303 going to "ghost planets where most of the inhabitants have gone into a deep sleep and turned into trees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heavenly Delusion/Tengoku Daimakyou
And finally Heavenly, it has two concurrent plotlines with the first one being about a boy and a girl going through a post apocalyptic Japan looking for "new heaven", while the second is about a group a kids in a sterile facility wanting to go explore outside the walls of said facility.
It has an anime that covers the first 5 volumes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And those are all my sci-fi recs for the moment!!! Hope someone finds something new to enjoy of these here. apologies if the writing ain't the best i wrote this at like 3 am.

Dandadan references: Part ⭐︎◻︎◎⚪︎▷
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gunnm aka Alita Battle Angel? In my Dandadan? More likely than you think.
Have to be honest though. I didn’t catch this while reading manga and even looking at it now I’m not sure it was supposed to be there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the perspective and the yellow-orange light in the anime version seem way too familiar. Like, it’s literally in every version of Gunnm from manga to live action.
And - aaaah - it’s beautiful in every universe ❤︎

Another one of the reasons I strongly relate to Shinjiro. He likes dogs a lot. I had a similar reaction when I watched the live-action Alita: Battle Angel with my husband and there was an upsetting scene that involved a dog.
I'm imagining that Shinjiro left ahead of the protagonist here because Shinjiro was likely on the verge of tears and didn't want the protagonist to see. I can be like that, too. Although in my case I usually try to hide my face.

2024 Stuff I Liked Post - Anime
As is tradition, my partners and I always do a retrospective on favourite media for the year during our solstice celebration. It is much delayed this time, but I normally put a simplified version of that on here (for the historical record ofc), so let us see - what did I enjoy in 2024? I will split this into multiple posts for length/interest, so let us start on-brand with anime.
This was a solid year for watching anime for me - I blogged about a good deal less than I actually consumed so that maybe didn't come through, though ofc my favorites were typically mentioned. In particular, I covered a lot of the 80's/90's OVA ground, a journey I started in 2023, while being a bit removed from modern anime. The best:
California Crisis: Not a shocker, given my writings on this one I won't belabor why I enjoyed this generally-forgotten 80's OVA too much. Suffice to say that I view it as a core member of the constellation of "anime directions the failed" that I am always secretly mapping in mind: properties that introduced new styles, new themes, new approaches, or just a unique je ne sais quoi that more projects could have built on, but generally never/rarely did. The orphaned branches of anime history. A core member of the "Anime Americana OVAs" pantheon alongside the stylish Gunsmith Cats and the inexplicable Cipher The Video.
Battle Angel Alita: A lot of the cyberpunk OVAs from the 80's are actually kind of rough - they tend to be unbalanced in some way, amazing visual style but a lackluster plot, or rough animation, or overloaded on fanservice...or very *ahem* interesting politics. Battle Angel (or Gunnm, as it is truly called, but that ship has sailed in the west) I think benefits from being made in 1993 and learning the lessons of its predecessors. Everything about it is just a little bit smoother, a little bit prettier, and not so obsessed with the "newness" of the ideas and so focused on the core characters and tone. It is fun while being dystopian, a classic "anime superpower" moment where the distance provided by it being animation over live action allows for tone shifts that don't break your engagement. Also we stan gynoids in 2024, gotta respect the yearly theme.
Urusei Yatsura 1 - Only You & Urusei Yatsura 2 - Beautiful Dreamer: Yeah, I watched both of the Oshii Urusei Yatsura films and I didn't blog a fucking thing about it, really off my game lol. I am listing these together for a reason, namely that I am in a certain sense not an Urusei Yatsura fan. I have watched a good number of episodes of the original show, and it just isn't good from a modern lens, I'm sorry! I get how at the time it could have been good, but it's primary asset - a willingness to be almost skit-comedy-show levels of arbitrary in its plots and presentation - is a liability now, as we have other shows doing better the dozen things it tries to do, and its characters are very shallow and unlikeable given its commitment to its bit. It is the definition of "dated" for me. However, the films definitely elevated this material. Some of it is just the power of budget - the original show is not great looking, but these films are beautiful, with aggressively complex action-comedy set pieces and a lot more moments of pure character expression or painterly beauty. But in other ways it is very on-brand; Only You & Beautiful Dreamer could not be more different as films. The first is purely zany romantic comedy about competing alien factions trying to marry Ataru, and includes Star Wars space battle parodies and a harem of hundreds of cryogenically jilted men going on a citywide rampage. The second is the story of being stuck in a time-stopped dreamscape, meditating on what one is trying to hold on to and what is okay to let go of, with its best moments being static shots of ruined landscapes or the motion of Lum's hair in the wind. Alone, neither of these films is a 10/10? But together I see the good version of Urusei Yatsura as the "everything anime", a vessel for telling every story one can think of with a core cast of characters as a base to build off. The Commedia dell'Anim- yeah okay Brian David Gilbert already made that joke I can't steal it. I get it now, I am officially a fan of Urusei Yatsura. (Ironically, Only You is better than Beautiful Dreamer - Only You is 100% itself, while Beautiful Dreamer is itself only for the middle half, flanked by zany antics as set-up and payoff. Which would be fine if they were good, tone isn't the issue here, but they aren't. You can tell Oshii felt like he had to reign in his true desires, which is tragic. Eva would do what you failed to do a decade later though my friend, don't worry.)
Dungeon Meshi: You don't need me to say anything, it's really good guys. Check it out.
Honorable Mentions: Hibike Euphonium (Final Season), Urotsukidouji (yeah, that Urotsukidouji, fucking fight me it is quite good!), Girls Band Cry, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Is the live action event really mostly one piece?
I just looked at the box, and out of the 17 currently in the box. This doesn't include what's already in the queue. Only five are not one piece; three came in last night. So, if anyone knows of live-action adaptations that aren't One Piece, please send in a request. Otherwise, I don't want complaints about too many One Piece polls. Because out of the live-action adaptations, I'm aware there haven't been any requests for Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Gintama, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Alita: Battle Angel. So, if you want variety, Google live-action anime adaptations and start sending in polls. No complaints about One Piece. I'm sorry, they're the only fandom sending requests.

Battle angle alita (1993)
Tumblr media
I watched the live action movie a few years ago and thought it was good, I definitely prefer the ova. The two episodes cover pretty much the same stuff as the film (in less time but somehow better pacing). The live action does downplayed the anti capitalist message a lot.
I’m currently reading the manga (which I think is even better)
Way pretty 8/10

Every person I see on here going "I've never read or watched One Piece before, but I'm watching the live-action version and having a good time"? I love y'all and I'm glad you're here. New fans are always good, and the source material is readily available if you can't wait for them to make more! The entirety of what the show adapted plus a little more is free on the Shonen Jump app rn (through Chapter 108), and the app is like...$2 or $3 dollars a month for ALL of the manga (and lots and lots of other manga, it's a steal). Or if you'd rather stick with television, pretty much the entire anime series is available both subtitled and dubbed into English on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.
But also, as good as the source material is...if the live-action series is your jam and you wanna stick with it as your primary One Piece experience until Netflix stops making it? Awesome, more power to you! Love this story in whatever form you want to, don't let anyone talk down to you about being a fan of this or that version. We don't often get faithful, fun Hollywood live-action adaptations of manga/anime (really, it's just this, Speed Racer, and Alita: Battle Angel), and if there are people appreciating One Piece fully on the merits of the live-action show, I'm all for it.

Writer-director Adam Sherman (This Game’s Called Murder) has set the cast for his newest indie feature, the horror comedy Vampires of the Velvet Lounge. Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Dichen Lachman (Severance) lead the ensemble, which also includes Stephen Dorff (Blade), Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel), Lochlyn Munro (Peacemaker), India Eisley (I Am the Night), Sarah Dumont (Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), Mark Boone Jr. (Sons of Anarchy), Tom Berenger (Platoon), Timothy V. Murphy (The Fabulous Four), Sherman Augustus (Strangers Things) and Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious franchise).
Drawing inspiration from titles like Shaun of the Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn, the film currently shooting in Georgia [ed. filming has currently wrapped] watches as a coven of the blood-suckers struggles to come to terms with the modern world and their own mortality as they are locked in a battle with a deadly foe.
In addition to Sherman, producers on the project include Marcus Englefield and George Lee for Storyoscopic Films (Animal Crackers). Noémi Santo is co-producing for Adam Sherman Film.
“I’m making a modern-day feature with an amazingly talented cast and crew about the most prolific serial killer in history, the historical countess Elizabeth Bathory, in the style of the ’70s and ’80s horror movies that I grew up watching,” said Sherman. “She believed bathing in the blood of young women would make her live forever, and there’s no physical or scientific evidence that she ever died. I look forward to the day I can share this insane, twisted, and surrealist story with audiences.”
Producers Englefield and Lee added that the film is “a sexy, funny, and original thriller packed with stunts and action that takes viewers on a fun ride. Between Adam’s vision and the stellar performances delivered by our incredible ensemble, we know the film will have strong market appeal both in the U.S. and internationally.”
