I’m actually serious about this, if at all possible, right now is a very good time to request queer books from your local library. Whether they get them or not is not in your control, but it is so important to show that there is a desire for queer books. I will also say getting more queer books in libraries and supporting queer authors are pretty fantastic byproducts of any action.

This isn’t something everyone can do, but please do see if you are one of the people who has the privilege to engage in this form of activism, and if you are, leverage that privilege for all you’re worth.

For anyone who can’t think of a queer book to request, here is a little list of some queer books that I think are underrated and might not be in circulation even at larger libraries:

Mr. Terrence Silver - filanthropist, explorer and adventurer. Forms an expedition group to Borneo. Unlike Daniel and Ali, sees Johnny only as a savage. His dislike towards him increases when he finds out about Johnny and Daniel's feelings for each other, as he wants the latter for himself.

Ms Alison Mills - the botanist, quickly becomes Daniel's best friend during the expedition. Her father, the editor of the London Evening News, disowned her for her "unnatural" proclivities towards science and athletics.

No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics is a queer comic anthology edited by Justin Hall. It was used as the basis for a 2021 documentary which I haven't seen yet myself, but I'm very much looking forward to checking out, called No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics.

The official description:

Queer cartooning encompasses some of the best and most interesting comics of the last four decades, with creators tackling complex issues of identity and a changing society with intelligence, humor, and imagination. This book celebrates this vibrant artistic underground by gathering together a collection of excellent stories that can be enjoyed by all. No Straight Lines showcases major names such as Alison Bechdel (whose book Fun Home was named Time Magazine's 2006 Book of the Year), Howard Cruse (whose groundbreaking Stuck Rubber Baby is now back in print), and Ralf Koenig (one of Europe's most popular cartoonists), as well as high-profile, cross-over creators who have dabbled in LGBT cartooning, like legendary NYC artist David Wojnarowicz and media darling and advice columnist Dan Savage. No Straight Lines also spotlights many talented creators who never made it out of the queer comics ghetto, but produced amazing work that deserves wider attention. Until recently, queer cartooning existed in a parallel universe to the rest of comics, appearing only in gay newspapers and gay bookstores and not in comic book stores, mainstream bookstores or newspapers. I stumbled across this anthology totally by accident, back when my husband was working at a used bookstore and I'd hang out to browse new arrivals. I scooped it up because it felt important to have it, even though I wasn't a huge comics reader at the time. Now that I've gotten significantly more into comics, I'd say this is a must-have for any queer comic collector. There's so much collected in a single volume, and it's really incredible to hold a piece of queer art history like that. It makes me want to go work on my own art, which is pretty much the highest praise I can give any piece of media.

The Victorian historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, referring to the chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, famously wrote:

There is no sadder spot on Earth. Each year, since at least the 1960s, on the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution, a bunch of red roses - such as appear on her coat of arms - has been delivered anonymously to the Tower, with a request that it be placed on her memorial. The flowers, sent by a shop in London on the instructions of an undisclosed firm of trustees, are always accompanied by a card bearing only the dedication Queen Anne Boleyn 1536. This request is complied with by the Yeoman Warders, who lay the flowers on Anne’s grave and only remove them when they have withered.

Here is a story! 

Story it is . . . 

There was once a Land Before Time , warm and tropical, while surrounded by the cold and snowing mountains of Antarctica : it was known as the Savage Land, and there humans lived, alongside dinosaurs, birds and mammals that had become extinct in the rest of the Earth .

In the Savage Land , little yellow flowers were blooming, flowing with nectar meant to be transformed into honey by the bees.

The Fall People harvested that honey, which would be shared among many in a night of dance and feast, celebrating the land’s fertility and the blossoms turning into fruit.

For this celebration, a group of people that came from the outside world, and were frequent allies of the Savage Land people in their times of plight, were invited:

Ororo Munroe the Storm , James Logan Howlett the Wolverine , Kurt Wagner the Nightcrawler , Sean Cassidy the Banshee , Alison Blaire the Dazzler, Henry ‘Hank’ Philip McCoy the Beast and Piotr Rasputin the Colossus .

Alongside the warrior Ka-Zar and his wife Shanna , this group of visitors, with the exception of Ororo who joined Nereel of the Fall People in her shack to get adorned for the celebrations, were sitting on the floor circling a warming fire dug in the soil and surrounded by rocks, eating roasted antelopes and boars with their hands, over leaves of banana trees as their plates, sharing a drink of honey wine from inside a gourd that was passed between the hands of the people sitting.

Then, from Nereel’s shack, accompanied by several women, gracefully walked Ororo , dressed in a skirt made with just five transparent scarves. 

Positioning herself in the middle of the circle of people sitting on the floor, Ororo began to dance in a way so beautiful that it seemed like the wind itself, awakening a hallucinating perfume. 

She danced for hours and the more she danced, the more she aroused everyone’s attention and admiration… especially from Logan, who seemed to be intoxicated, entranced and surrendered. 

Ororo stopped, making her traveling companions wonder if she had grown tired, but in reality she was pausing to receive a beautiful gift from the basket Nereel carried in her hands: a snake, with skin of the seven colors of the rainbow.

As soon as she catched the snake, Ororo continued the dance, only more slowly: the way she moved her belly and her hips, accompanying the movements of her eyes made you think that the snake and the wind rider had become one with the snake in her hands.

At this moment, Logan felt bold: he crawled to come closer to the beautiful dancer, and asked her:

“If I kissed the mouth of the snake, would you give me a kiss in the mouth? ”

The Storm didn’t say a word: instead, she answered by bringing the face of the snake closer to the Wolverine . And grinning, showing no hesitance, he kissed the mouth of the snake.

His friends opened their jaws, shocked with the scene in the front of them. 

Ka-Zar and Shanna simply smiled, admiring what they were seeing.

Ororo put the snake to rest over her shoulders, and walked to the side, in the direction of a basket, full of the yellow flowers dripping with golden honey, which catched with her hands.

Then, she returned to the center of the circle and approached Logan, and with her fingertips, smeared his mouth with honey: 

“Drink the honey, my friend. ”

Before taking his face between her hands to kiss him.

When the two kissed, Nereel blew a buffalo horn: this was a call for everyone sitting and watching to rise up on their feet and dance around the two passionate friends.

Ka-Zar and Shanna led the surprised guests from the outside world, in a hand joined dance of people that moved through the center of the festivities like a giant snake.

The fire was over. The light was brought by the stars and the fireflies.

And into a tent away from the shacks, holding hands, entered the Storm and the Wolverine .

The two undressed away from any adorns, and sitting over a storm mat held each other in a tight embrace.

Ororo whispered into Logan’s ear:

“And so as we dream of the world, the world dreams of us.”

And he answered, whispering into her ear while caressing her long hair:

“And this day is the dream of the world.”

And so, love was made.
