Day six of ShadAmy Week 2023! Big shout out to @shadowsfascination and @killingthecringe . They have been patient enough to beta for me, and to them, I am eternally grateful 💜 Especially as, once again, I was fucking around with writing styles for this one.
(It’s not... REALLY that much of a shadamy piece, but it’s there enough so XD )
Our favorite critter is not having a great time with alien hybrid puberty.
WARNING: Body Horror / Eyes / Medical Horror
ALSO! I AM BACK ON A03! If you would like to read the story there, please click this link!
---
It started with a headache.
That was in the beginning. Right in the middle of Shadow’s forehead, just above his eyes, it would come and go for weeks before settling into a dull but constant ache. A few painkillers and it would vanish, but then, the very next day, he would swear it would feel worse.
Rouge told him to take a nap. Omega suggested he ‘get a better meatbag.’
Amy worried, and he wished she wouldn’t.
“You can go to the doctor, you know,” she’d say with her brow furrowed and her hands on her hips. “It wouldn’t kill you.”
He’d shaken his head, choosing to ignore the memory of white sterility as he instead focused on the way the sunlight caught her eyes. “It will pass. I am not concerned.”
His sleep suffered, as did his work, as did his patience. Even his gardening fell victim. No matter how he tried, there was a tremble in his hands now. Not a lot, just a little, and always when he was trying to be the most delicate. After one too many a stem snapped in his hands, a pair of garden shears was the next thing he grabbed, and they stuck out of the brickwork of the next-door apartment complex for weeks.
He could see them from his bedroom window, gathering bird shit and rust, and he’d growl at the pain.
Rouge laughed and said he was finally hitting puberty. Omega suggested sparring if he wanted to throw around sharp objects so badly.
Amy worried, and he wished she wouldn’t.
She placed her hands on either side of his face, and he had to work very hard not to melt on the spot as she leaned in.
“It doesn’t look any different… Well, maybe a little swollen? It’s hard to tell. Did you maybe get hit and didn’t realize how bad it was? What’s it feel like?”
“Tunneling.” That was the only word he could pick for it. It felt like something was tunneling into his head.
That was the wrong choice. Shadow knew it as soon as it left his mouth and Amy’s face pinched as she pulled away.
The next time she called to hang out, he did not answer.
He didn’t answer any of her calls the next day either, or the next, or the twenty-seven that came after. Each one served as a reminder of how he was failing, her smiling face on the caller id looking up at him buried itself into his brain. He saw it everywhere, heard his ringer when there was no call. Even without her present, she hovered at his shoulder.
His stomach would turn when he denied the call.
And then she got Rouge and Omega involved.
Shadow should have known it would come to that. The moment he walked into the kitchen and Rouge rushed to hang up the phone, he knew what it was about.
Of course Amy would call her. The fact that they too now were concerned at all should have been an indicator that this was more serious than he was willing to accept, but the fact of the matter was that Omega’s overprotectiveness and Rouge’s sideways glances left him avoiding them both rather than gritting his teeth through their inquiries.
He did accept Rouge’s meds though. She always did have the stronger stuff on hand, all of her old prescriptions kept in their neatly labeled bottles at the far back of the refrigerator.
But then, one day, Shadow heard two low voices in the kitchen. He stayed frozen in the hall, his breath stuck in his chest as Rouge whispered to Amy that he wasn’t okay, telling her he was getting worse, telling her that she was going to see if someone on the medical team could fit him in for an appointment.
Shadow didn’t have to see Amy’s face to know what she thought. He could hear it in her voice, the way the pitch rose and rose, the hitching of her breath snatching her words from her. There was the familiar, heavy thud of her placing a container of foodstuffs onto the counter as she started to cry.
The altercation between the roommates afterward ended with him throwing the pills back into the refrigerator and choosing to sleep atop the apartment complex roof.
Shadow’s gaze burned two more stars into the hot city sky that night. Teeth and fists clenched, he tried to keep his breathing even to quell the fear taking root in his heart.
Amy worried, and he wished she wouldn’t.
But he’d make this right. He’d get better. Amy wouldn’t need to worry about him anymore.
About three months later, after another botched mission, Shadow stood in the GUN headquarters basement bathroom. His hands pressed into the wall, sweat beading on his brow as he took measured breaths through his teeth.
When he tried to look into the mirror again, all he saw was a sickly image swimming before him.
Shadow dropped his gaze back to the sink, letting the world go fuzzy as his eyes started to burn and drift out of focus.
He couldn’t see.
Why couldn’t he see?
Bile burned at the back of Shadow’s throat, and as he swallowed, he bowed his head to wash his face in the sink. The fridged, tinny water only made the shaking worse, made his stomach churn more, and he gagged as he shut the water off and ran a hand across his eyes.
This wasn’t right.
He started to scrub his face.
Nothing was right. He was sick. He couldn’t take care of anyone, let alone himself. This just kept getting worse, and as it did, it took him with it, the pain growing and growing, pulling him apart. He was failing at his life’s mission. He was failing at everything.
And Amy was still worried.
He could still hear her crying from that day at the apartment, could still see her face when she had leaned in to see if she could spot anything. He remembered her breath on his skin and the taunt knot of her brow as she asked, again, for him to take care of himself.
He couldn’t see clearly anymore, but he didn’t need his eyes to see in order to be haunted by hers.
The little bell tone that he had picked specifically and only for her rang and echoed against the tile.
Shadow scrubbed harder, nails raking across his flesh, leaving it red and raw.
Amy worried, and he wished she wouldn’t.
He wasn’t worth the energy.
He wasn’t worth-
There is pain, unlike anything else. It’s white and brilliantly blinding, showering sparks through his brain. The ground is gone. He cannot breathe. His lungs are burning and he feels like he might collapse in on himself like a dying star, sucked in and down and becoming nothing.
And then, he was nothing.
A vast blackness thick with the ringing silence.
Weightless, effortless.
Until there was a hand in his.
There was a hand in his, and he knew this hand. He knew the texture of these gloves, the shape of these fingers, the weight of this palm. He knew the strength it held him with and the ferocity it would continue to hold on with.
He knew this hand, and when it squeezed, he squeezed back.
And Shadow was himself again
All at once, there is too much texture, too much beeping. He could smell the disinfectant all around him, a deadly fog encroaching, and the itching of the adhesive for the electrodes on his chest feeling like the tiny teeth of worms.
And he could not see at all.
His eyes were crusted shut, cotton gauze adhering to the gunk and laying heavy on his brow.
It needed to come off. All of it.
“Shadow?”
He felt her hands cradle his face. Her voice sounded so fragile, brittle and exhausted to the point of snapping.
Shadow’s heart clenched, breath caught in his throat.
He did this to her.
Unacceptable.
Shadow sat up and tore the electrodes out.
Every machine in the room began to wail, and Amy’s own shriek went off with them. She screamed at him to lay back down, to stop, to just be still, and he would not. Shadow ripped the iv from his wrist in a fever all while her hands scrabbled at his own.
The hands grabbing at him did not have the strength they knew they should have been carrying. Her voice, loud and commanding, was gone, almost entirely. How long had he kept her up? How much had she cried, that her throat was so raw she could barely speak? How long had he left her like this, sitting here, watching a body?
He did this to her.
Useless. He was useless. He had hurt her, made her worry.
Shadow scratched at his face. He had to get this damn thing off. He had to see her. He had to apologize now, right now. This was unacceptable. She was never supposed to worry. The feeling of tape ripping from his flesh, taking his quills with it, caused him to flinch, pull back, and-
And suddenly, there was light.
Everything was bright, too crisp, the depth unnerving to the point where he feared he may slip from the bed. Amy’s arms came to catch him as he fell, eyes rolling back, stomach clenching. She is the one who pulled him back to center. She is the one who repeated over and over that he would be alright, gentle nothings tumbling from trembling lips.
But he looked at her, her face so close to his, and she stalled.
Amy took his hands, the bloody gauze clutched tight in his grasp, and laid them to rest in his lap.
Her face, a mass of tears, eyes red and bloodshot, lips worried to shreds. She ran a hand along his quills and he shivered both from the touch and from the pain.
“Oh, Shadow…” Her wide eyes darted across his face. “I promise you’re safe. You’re gonna be alright.”
He tried to blink away the spots, tried to give himself a moment to adjust, but for some reason, he couldn’t. He shut his eyes, could feel them close, could feel the way the lashes bristle and the flesh wrinkle, but he still looked straight ahead at her livid green eyes.
The sound Amy made was soft, like that of something dying.
That was when he spotted it.
Just above her, looming over the bed, a magnifying lens encircled by a light, and there, in the faint reflection, he could see himself.
A low sound, pathetic, like weeping. Grotesque. He burned with it, and the longer it went, the worse the burning got. His jaw, his eyes, his skin, they ached, and the sound only grew louder. It was not until he watched the tears dripping onto his hands that he realized it was him.
It was him. He was crying.
Making this worse.
He could feel them then, trickling down from his forehead, down his nose, along his face with the rest of them.
Salt in the wound.
It burned. It burned.
Shadow sat there, shaking in her hands, forced to watch as she stared, as she ran her hands through his quills and cupped his cheek.
That horrid unblinking eye, now right in the middle of his forehead, forced him to watch her face contort in fear.
Amy, sweet Amy, was so, so afraid.
And, Chaos, he wishes she wasn’t.

Have you ever thought about making Clark or Connor look more extraterrestrial or having Connor go through a part of Kryptonian puberty that even Lex was completely unaware of for angst or?
You've been many to ask this so... here we go!
Since Krypton was under a red sun, I made the assumption that most of the planet's fauna would be in shades of blue or white to better absorb the light. As for the photosynthesis ability, I thought making Kryptonians reptiles would make sense. And also because dragons. I like dragons.
Since in my headcanons Krypton's mass was heavier than earth, most of the Kryptonians who were raised on their home planet were more muscular and would tend to walk more often on four legs rather than two which made their back slightly bent like the drawing I made below. But Clark being raised from a very young age on a planet with a lighter mass, he would be thinner, his back straight and perfectly bipedal.
Their "hair" would actually be proto feathers who shimmer like crystals so they can hide in their environment (mostly crystal mountains and forests). Most of the time, their horns are the only way to determine males from females (bigger for the males) because they have a similar build.
I'll answer about Hybrid Conner in another ask because I lack the space here.
Bonus: Martha loving her baby despite his alien appearance.

i like to think that theres just sometbing in the hermitcraft server code that transforms u into a hybrid. like. these were just regular ass humans before they started living there and by proximity the server has started to morph them into Something else. it started slowly at first in the earlier seasons and has only gotten more potent and effective as it goes on, almost as if its building and feeding off their energy.
and now doc is a. cyborg goat thing. rens a Dog. false and grian have bird wings. mumbo has shifted forms so many times that none of them can even tell if he was originally a human. cleo has become a FULL ON CORPSE. joe hills is a puppet now. like this is just normal for them. they just learn to live with it. these are permanent modifications made to their bodies and their minds and theyre all just like Yeah. Price i pay for being a hermit i guess XOXO
AND SOMETIMES IT CHANGES FROM SEASON TO SEASON (or from month to month, even) like joe wasnt a puppet last season but some force greater than him decided to yank his soul out of her body and now theyre a puppet. tango switched from blaze to Cold blaze and back to blaze between seasons. it FUCKED with him. imagine having ur core temperature shift so much like that. iskall rejoins and suddenly his bones are shifting all over again into a new form that the server has deemed is most appropriate for him this season. and its agonizing, sure, but its also like a 🙄🙄 eye roll moment bc we’ve been through this!!! god its like puberty all over again.
cub waking up one day and having to break the news to scar that hes no longer a vex . scar gets so sad he chews a hole through his base. jevin becoming less slimey and more solid and is so confused and uncertain about his entire life now because he cant fit in parts of his base when hes this solid. enderman mumbo who shifts and now no longer has a legitimate excuse to not make eye contact with people.
imagine being joel and skizz and talking to the past newcomers ab the weird stuff going on with ur body. skizz has noticed his shoulder blades have been aching recently, as if something underneath the skin is trying to pop out. joel has these weird growths on the top of his head. gem and pearl just laugh and go yeah man thats normal. shouldve been there when i became a weird alien thing last season lol.
theyre both just like ??? AND NOBODY WANTED TO TELL US ABOUT THIS???? to which all the other hermits shrug bc its such a widely accepted fact. its doing some cocomelon shit to their brain fr
#i wrote this last night in a stress induced haze#ignoring the obvious TERRIFYING IMPLICATIONS OF THIS#i think it could be funny#like SIGHHH the server is making me into a fish bc it sees how much time ive been spending near the water#grian is shaking his fist at the sky like GIVE ME MY WINGS BACK#u could go in so many different ways with this btw#like. body horror. slapstick comedy. angst.#the sky is the limit#i also think the code is as previosuly stated doing some cocomelon shit to their brain#hermitcraft#hermitblr#rosie writing

Hi! I wanted to ask you a few questions about Odessa... :3
1- Is she innocent? If so, she is very
2- How did they discover her autism?
3- Does she do any kind of martial arts?
4- Does she draw well?
5- Does she go to school? If so, what is she like at school?
6- Is she gifted?
7-What are the signs that she is angry?
8- What is her reaction when she gets something she really wants?
9- How tall are you? And your weight..?
10- Is she hiding something from Entrapta and Hordak?
11- As a hybrid, how was your puberty?
12- Is your adult life difficult?
13- Does she have a boyfriend or girlfriend?
14- Does she speak another language?
15- How does Entrapta treat Odessa and how does Hordak treat her?
hi! sorry for taking a bit, I finally have the time to answer these so here I am!
1) honestly, she's not! she's legally banned on several planets and has a tendency to take her research to unethical degrees in the name of progress. while her methods can be questionable, the results of her research speak for themselves, and there's a good reason she eventually creates her own medical empire.
2) honestly, it's never formally diagnosed because it was never regarded as an issue for her or her family. it was likely suspected when she was a toddler though since she was nonverbal for the first 3 years of her life, and only spoke in sign language.
3) yes, she was trained young to fight and knows multiple forms of martial arts.
4) nope! she can't draw, she could if she wanted to but has no interest lol
5) she graduated college at 16, and has multiple degrees. she is a star student, if not to an almost annoying degree because she can easily surpass her teachers despite being so young. her peers range from respecting her and following her around to being resentful and skeptical that someone so young- a half breed no less- can be so knowledgeable and advanced.
6) extremely gifted. see above.
7) the first sign is she'll go completely silent, giving a very severe death stare. if you look closely at her, you can even see her whole body shake with rage.
8) probably would happy stim, little hand claps and the like, a little squeal too if she's feeling particularly excited!
9) are you... talking about me or odessa? if you mean odessa, she starts off as 5'7" in her later teen years and about 150 pounds. as she gets older, she continues to grow until she reaches 7'3" and about 220 pounds. if you mean me, I'm not disclosing that.
10) yes
11) she technically went through two puberties. her first was like that of any human, growth spurts, voice change, maturing figure, all of this happens around 12-13 years old. when she hits her 30s, she goes through another growth spurt, stronger bone density, stronger immune system, increased durability, etc..
12) is my adult life difficult?? I mean, yes and no, I suppose? if you mean odessa's adult life, it starts off pretty nice but as her long lifespan becomes more of a detriment than a gift, it becomes increasingly difficult and numbing. she loses a lot of people she loves throughout her life, and her only constant is her work.
13) she has a boyfriend and a girlfriend throughout her story.
14) she knows multiple alien languages in order to upkeep with her rapidly growing empire of planets.
15) entrapta treats odessa very lovingly! she gives odessa a lot of independence, but isn't afraid to give her baby lots of hugs and kisses when she can. entrapta also has hallways upon hallways of portraits of odessa throughout her life. while her daughter is a little embarrassed about all the portraits, she loves her mother very much and will defend her at all costs. odessa is entrapta's favorite science project! for hordak, he is more subdued with his affections towards her, but the small gestures say a lot and she is incredibly close with her father and respects him a lot. he also gives her a lot of independence, but also wishes her to be safe, teaching her how to fight, and not wanting her to be discriminated for being a half clone hybrid. he is extremely protective of her well-being, and simply wants his little girl to flourish despite the obstacles ahead of her.

Summary: A spider finds out about himself that he never really knew about, and he's glad he did
Archive of our own version: Here
Spider felt alien.
Well, more than he already is, considering to the Na'vi, humans are the most unnatural beings. Which he doesn't argue with. He has seen firsthand how their emotions and beliefs are primarily powered by greed, selfishness, and an ugly fixation on absolute control over everything they see and can't.
Spider always hated the stories the others would tell; how the sky people, Tawtute, came from the stars within their metal birds (space shuttle), wanting to find a new home away from their neglected planet. Believing they could rebuild to save their species from extinction. Not once worry how their actions would affect Eywa'eveng's motherlands, creatures, and her children. Killing thousands without remorse, brothers, sisters, families, and many good humans that weren't blinded by their stupidity. Like Grace Augustine, Jake Sully, and the many scientists that saw their freedom within Pandora.
Knowing this, Spider understood why the Omatikaya treated him as an outcast.
Despite owning a Na'vi spirit, he was confined in his weak human body. He still remembers how, as a toddler, he'd constantly have extreme temper tantrums, his face entirely red with crocodile tears streaming down his cheeks. Demanding fussily that he wanted to own an Avatar like the others. He even begged to use someone else's when they were not using them. Prompting Poor Norm to explain to a grumpy four-year-old boy how borrowing a genetically engineered Na'vi-hybrid body was impossible and dangerous to his undeveloped mind. And creating his own was the same without the suitable instruments and technology to keep it alive.
So, with a saddened heart, he'd accepted that he couldn't be a true child of the people. Yet, it didn't stop him to tried to be one as much as he possibly could be as a human. He stopped wearing human clothes unless he was asleep or with his foster family, spoke the people's language to train himself fluently and read all of Ms. Augustine's survival guides and old video logs. To further his knowledge his their traditions, customs, animals, and flora. Spider did everything to feel even a tiny bit like them, and no matter the little praises and comments he'd received, he treasured them. Those small praises gave him confidence and a sense of being him, not a demon, not his son.
Not Miles Socorro, son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, a Na'vi killer's child. He's Spider, a son of Eywa, a friend and warrior of the Omatikaya clan. He continued this throughout his childhood, leading toward his teens. Where his self-esteem was at his lowest, and puberty was a total bitch. However, throughout the years, he gained friends from a family like him, sharing two worlds. However, unlike him, the people treated them with respect. Lo'ak and Kiri, son and daughter of the mighty Toruk Makto, are his foundation.
Lo'ak, his frivolous brother, brought him trouble and madness wherever they went, a dynamic duo that loved to prank everyone and have amazing adventures that left them with bruises and cuts, much to Mo'at and Neytiri's displeasure. Regardless of his recklessness, Lo'ak can be a great listener, surprising even Spider. He's considerate of the issues that Spider faces. Being similar to his own due to his eyebrows and extra forefinger. They both rely on each other, having their back against anything in their path.
Then there's Kiri, a blessing of the great mother, his kindhearted sister. She always finds ways to cheer Spider from the nasties of moods, showing him Pandora's most extraordinary sites. They bond over their parentages and differences and have each other's back from those who call them freaks.
Yet, this wasn't the reason why he felt alienated.
The combined efforts of Kiri's stubbornness and Lo'ak's lack of decency were the critical key points that helped him discover that feeling. It was high noon, the sun was at its apex, and the Omatikaya carried on their daily chores. He and Kiri were tasked with gathering fresh herbs and fruits to replenish Mo'at's medicine room to aid in creating new ointments and creams for the young warriors injured from hunts and recon missions. Thanks to his fast knowledge of the different effects of the various types of plants, along with Kiri's Tsakarem training, the two are collecting the materials in recorded time. They were enjoying each other company until Spider heard a yowling scream before a vast body pressed him down, "Hey, Bro!!"
Spider smiled, immediately recognizing the voice anywhere," Lo'ak get off bro, your heavy." Lo'ak laughs, still pressing down the older boy, lightly teasing him about how tiny he is under him until Kiri decides it is enough, pushing her annoying brother off him. Spider never mined the teasing from him, knowing fully well that these comments were a way of having fun. Not to be used by the other kids and adults behind their backs.
"Lo'ak."
Spider lifts his head to see a very irritated Neteyam glaring down at his younger brother with his bow on his hip. "Dad told us to hunt for Yerik to bring back to Mother. Stop messing around." He rolled his eyes at his older brother. Spider stood up, dusting himself off the dirt and grass that covered his loincloth, listing to the two arguing. Spider always found it amusing that both claimed to be soo different than the other when he could distinctly see their similarities. Understandably, Neteyam is the responsible child and follows the rules with an iron fist, yet he still vaults into trouble alongside Lo'ak without a second thought. Completely ignoring the dangers and consequences that come from it. And despite Lo'ak being a devil-may-care teenager, he's very concerned about his family and defends them without question, like any brother.
If only Spider could make them see that.
"Whatever, I'm bringing Spider with me for the hunt since somebody doesn't want me around," Lo'ak proclaimed, wrapping an arm around Spider's shoulder. Kiri looks at her brother with a frown, walking up to the two with a deep frown," No, he's helping me gather herbs to bring back to grandmother. He can deal with hunting later." She explained, crossing her arms. Her response was a defending groan, "Oh, come on, sis! I don't want to go with Captain Serious. He'd just gonna go off flirting with that warrior chick again."
That was new; Kiri and Spider looked at Neteyam with shocked yet interested expressions at the newfound information given to them. Neteyam's ears became a dark violet as his face became one of embarrassment. Glaring daggers at his brother, he counters back how "it wasn't like that!" and "She's just a fellow warrior." causing his siblings to giggle at his attempts, while Spider remained silent.
Lo'ak then adds to his brother's horror of the considerable benefits of having a mate, along with some imagined comments causing Neteyam to blush further, causing him to tackle his brother to the ground. Kiri rolled her eyes at the two, "Boys. All of them are just the same." Kiri declared; she then quickly looked back to Spider," Excapt you, Monkey Boy, your so lucky that you don't have to worry about all that stuff." Spider simply chuckles, agreeing with her statement.
Spider understood that being Pandora's only human child, he'll never have a mate to call his own. Unfortunately, he'll never-Wait, is he despondent that he can't have a partner?
He blinks at the sudden thought, confused by the fact that he isn't sad about not having a mate. If anything, he's…glade. Spider, throughout his life, never really talked about romance. Even when someone brings it up in conversations, he just nods until the topic changes to matters he's passionate about, such as hunting, gathering, and even playing with the other kids. It was he experiences little or no romantic attraction to anyone.
Wait a minute, didn't Norm explain something related to that topic a while-Wait!
Spider suddenly remembers one of his Earth lessons instructed by Norm and Max when the topic of "Sexual identities." came into the picture. Norm explains that the people of Earth use them to tell how one thinks of oneself and to whom one is romantically or sexually attracted. It also refers to one's sexual orientation identity, which is when people identify or disidentify with a sexual orientation or choose not to identify with a sexual orientation. In all honesty, Spider was extremely confused about all the terms and meanings since the Na'vi didn't really have or use titles to express their fondness. However, thinking back, he'd recall a particular word buried back of his mind that seemed to stick called Aromantic. Aromantic is a term for a person who experiences little or no romantic attraction to anyone.
This seemed right with him, and if anything, it felt… natural. Like anything that he ever felt unsure of was utterly gone. He's Aromantic. "Spider! Come on, bro, it's almost eclipse!" Spider snapped out of his mind, seeing Lo'ak with Kiri and Neteyam waiting on the other side of a towering tree leading to a dirt path. Spider fastly runs up to the two, apologizing for spacing out. They all began to walk back to the village before Jake had to call a war party for them. Lo'ak, noticing his brother's silent gaze, asked, "You okay, Spider? You seemed quiet."
Spider took a moment before he replied," Oh, you know, Just thinking. And finding some things out."
Spider going to have a field day when he tells Norm and Max what he discovered today.

👻, ❤️, 💛 and 💘 for the ask game?
👻 What is your wildest headcanon? - I have lots of headcanons, but I don't know which would be the wildest one fdhkgfkghkdlg... Probably something about Shadow's alien biology, but I don't want to say too much bc it would be spoilers for my fic DNA Collision. But you know, that fic is about mutation and all that stuff, so that gives you some hints >:3c
❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic? - Auuugh I can't choose just one... Here are some I personally like:
“Can you guys stop saying the prophecy like it’s some sort of general knowledge?” - Sonic, chapter 1 of Prophecy of Chaos
“Hybrid stuff, huh? Maybe it’s some sort of weird alien puberty?” - Sonic, chapter 1 of DNA Collision
[“The idiosyncrasies of Sonic’s speech and mannerisms are present in your behavior to a scarily accurate degree.”] “Hey! Who are you calling an idiot?” - Sonic, chapter 3 of Impactful Skip
“It’s easy for them to see you as an oppressor because you’re from the Eggman Legion, even though you are in fact a victim of it.” - Uncle Chuck, chapter 3 of Prophecy of Chaos
💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing? - Writing is a process, your text doesn't immediately have to perfect. With your first draft, it's more important to just get whatever you want to say out and on the paper than to think whether it's good or not. You can always come back later and edit, add, and remove things. And if you're stuck with what you're writing, sometimes the best solution is to let it rest overnight and come back to it later. I usually let my writings rest one night before posting them, whether it's a fic or an academic paper. Also, it's good to have a proofreader/beta reader, because they'll notice things you don't, and ask questions you never even thought about.
💘 Is it easier to write angst or fluff? - I'd say angst, especially with Sonic characters. They've all gone through so much and they're so young, so it's easy to imagine them breaking at some point, you know? And especially with characters like Shadow and Sonic, who don't like being vulnerable with others. But fluff is also very rewarding to write after all the angst...

You know, looking back, having the one character from a group that I still poked around with and thought about after basically abandoning that story be the trans guy may have been a sign.
His transness initially was kinda one if those shallow "I'm being an ally by including a trans person" things(I was like 14, cut me some slack). But I didn't just want to be one of those shallow people who who has their queerness be some extra textual stuff that never shows up in the main story, but I also knew enough not to have some big "make a big deal of the reveal" thing, plus I thought all that homophobia and transphobia stuff was stupid (still do) so had decided while there was prejudice (I was trying to be "realistic") people wouldn't care about such petty nonsense as being queer so it would likelynot be brouht up by a character. Eventually it clicked, they also were a genetic hybrid between a human and an alien... an alien whose female members had green copper based blood. I just needed to figure out how to get his blood color to come up... never quite figured that part out.
I did realize that since he already needed to mess with his biochemistry (he inherited his mom's species puberty of having massive spike erupt from their body without their nice biochemistry state that stones them into oblivion through the process) where he has a devise pumping a special blend of biochems into his system to keep the pain at reasonable levels without fully knocking him out since he needs to make the next batch and has to adjust it and make sure the levels are right ect ect. So having him also use it for hrt was a no brainer.
I feel like this post may have slightly gotten away from me. Oops, awell

some short info on the upcoming fix it /au fics im doing for vld and klance.
these are not free to use, please do not use these as prompts (at least until after ive published, thank you <3)
ancient ancestry; during a planetside mission Lance's armor is compromised, leading to him taking in a large amount of the planets atmosphere and having a bad reaction.
when he wakes up from the pod he discovers he's been turned to a full altean, with coran explaining the atmosphere has properties that activates ancient and dormant sequences of dna.
keith, who lance had been trying to save from injury qhen he himself got hurt, is a lot more hovery as lance acclimates on a cot and has the situation debriefed. and eventually, coran dismisses everyone *but* keith, lance, and allura--who seems fidgety
coran, a bit uncomfortably, explains that lance would be experiencing numerous changes in strength, senses, behavior, interests, with the addition of going through a sort of alien puberty.
keith, who has gone through all of this first hand with being galra, stays by lances side to help him feel less alone and for... deeper reasonings.
coran explains the puberty wont just be acne and growth spurts, but because lance changed to an altean so late in his life, he'd missed the age of the first estrus cycle and the pin could drop at any second. coran explains how alteans have one official mate for life and that they are one of, if not the most feared intelligent species because of how protective they get over their chosen mates. he then explains galrans *also* only have one mate and their protective nature is the reason the galran empire strongly discourages mating bonds--it gave soldiers reason to rebel.
the boys end up spending lots more time together, their relationship already having been closer just before the incident, so they figured 'it was bound to happen eventually, we should choose to get together while we're conscious instead of having the first time be hasty." theyve both chosen eachother consciously and biologically, even if they havent consumated that bond.
on another mission gone bad, lance went into the fight feeling sicker than a dog, making rookie mistakes and having a hard time concentrating. it caused keith to make a rash decision, save lance from injury and get him far away from the fight--even if it left keith wide open on all angles.
this is where things start to diverge depending on which storyline i want to do.
keith gets captured by the galra before lance or anyone has the chance to go back for him. lance even in the right state of mind would have been hysterical, let alone on the cusp of his first heat. he works endlessly, lashing out at the team anytime he detected less than satisfactory levels of effort, but eventually they find where keith is held. lance rushes ahead of the group, of course, and doesnt ait for backup before he storms the cruiser. total devastation ensues, lance tearing through actual walls to get to keith.
or alternatively, lance and keith both get captured and tortured together. a runty galran hybrid and a long lost altean--both of whom paladins of voltron and both of them dedicated mates. it's a feast of torture potential. though, with alteans having been 'extinct' for so long, modern galrans dont know the true extent of their capabilities or their drive--and they suffer for it greatly. at first lance is too out of it to really fight back, especially once the torture starts. but once the galrans start hurting keith just to taunt him, he pulls on the restraints in protest only to realize they bent like putty. again, the devastation is brutal.
for a fluffy smutty oneshot, keith gets a minor injury while saving lance but they both make it out okay--only for lance to immediately go into heat.

You can either go directly off of the prompts themselves, or if you want a little more inspiration, you can come check this post for more in-depth exploration of the idea in question.
For each entry in response to the prompts, regardless of what platform you post to, make sure to tag the #MonstrousMayChallenge! In the meantime, just spread the word and tell your friends to get them ready for May!
Feel free to pick and mix the prompts you like best, to skip any prompts that don’t suit you, or to swap in prompts of your own if you like — every 3rd day is a specific category of “classic” monsters, and they’re not for everybody!
“Monsters are the patron saints of imperfection.” — Guillermo del Toro (x)
The emphasis on all of the prompts below are on monster-centric and monster-POV stories. Monstrous romances and monstrous erotica are both welcome and encouraged, just as much as platonic monstrosity is, and please feel free to join in regardless of your medium, whether you draw, write, animate, or create in another way entirely!
Just a note as to what expect — this challenge is intended for those who love monsters, who identify with monsters, who feel for the monsters, and all the prompts are written with that expectation in mind.
One small note: throughout these prompts there are references to folklore and ideas from different cultures and backgrounds. When exploring ideas from cultures that aren’t your own, remember that not every representation of spirits or monsters can be divorced from its original context, and take care to do your research to ensure you aren’t harming others by furthering harmful stereotypes or appropriating ideas of cultural importance.
We’re all here to have fun, which means that using a love of monsters as a vehicle for racism (whether that’s outright or by upholding colonial and imperial ideas, appropriating from other cultures, or fetishising other races and cultures) is not what we want to see in the course of this challenge, and isn’t welcome here.
Note the above especially in regards to the Alonquian W*nd*go.
Saturday 1st May 2021 — What is a monster?
Here’s a warm-up challenge to start the month off:
For you, what is a monster? What makes a monster monstrous? What delights you, excites you, scares you, horrifies you about a monster? What fills you with affection for monster?
When you first hear the word monster, what springs first to mind?
This is a free space — talk about, write about, draw, animate, sing about, the monster(s) you love best, and why you love them!
Sunday 2nd May 2021 — How To Talk To Your Monster
How does your monster communicate?
Do they have a mouth, lips, a tongue, like humans do? Do they communicate verbally at all? Do they communicate via telepathy, via their tentacles, or their limbs? Do they speak, but at a pitch or volume or speed inaudible or incomprehensible to human ears? How is this gap bridged?
Does your monster understand humans but struggle to make itself understood? Does your monster want to be understood?
Alternate: How does your monster communicate with other, different monsters?
Monday 3rd May 2021 — The Vampire
The vampire is a walking corpse that sustains itself by feeding off the the blood of the living.
There are a thousand variations on the myth — a corpse that rises from its grave at night only to mindlessly glut itself on the prey it can find becomes a reclusive gentleman who lives in isolation in a brooding, gothic castle overlooking a Transylvanian woodland (Dracula); a sparkly immortal Mormon who likes to climb into young women’s windows to watch them while they sleep (Twilight); a rich aristocrat so intent on preserving his properties and his privilege that he clings onto immortality at all costs (Interview with the Vampire); an extremely sexy vampire in sunglasses who’s devoted to killing other vampires (Blade), and so on and so forth.
Explore your own take on the vampire:
Is your vampire actually dead? Do they just appear dead, or sleep in coffins?
What makes a vampire? A curse? A ritual? Transmission of vampiric disease — via the exchange of blood or via sex? Are they born that way? Do dhampirs (half-vampires) exist? Do vampires become vampires by choice? Is there a contract or an agreement?
Does your vampire drink blood? Cerebral fluid? Consume human flesh? Do they sap energy from others in non-literal ways — for example, do they feed off of emotions or energy, or seek to devour a soul?
If they survive off of the above, do they also eat or drink other things? Are they capable of doing so without becoming ill?
Is your vampire sensitive to sunlight? Bright light in general? Do they physically react to it? Do they burn, or crumble to dust? How do they cope with this — do they only come out at night, do they wear leathers and carry a parasol, do they use a medicated suncream?
Can vampires become ill? Sick? What weakens a vampire? What kills them?
Does your vampire have any other powers? Can they fly, hypnotise people, transform into gas or another animal?
What happens if a non-human becomes a vampire?
Alternate: A non-vampire monster becomes absolutely obsessed with vampires. They love them to pieces! Why? How do they get their vampire fix?

Tuesday 4th May 2021 — Iconic Settings
Imagine an iconic setting within the horror genre or without — your Transylvanian castles, your unending deserts of shifting sands, your haunted houses and their infinitely winding corridors, your unholy spires atop distant peaks, your deep and dismal caves, your roiling seas…
What monsters lurk within these settings? How do they feel about their environs? What happens if you transplant a monster from one such setting into its opposite, or combine a few of them together?
What happens if these settings are invaded, lost, destroyed, expanded, changed?
Alternate: Imagine any iconic setting you like, but instead of the monster lurking within, the setting is the monster.
The seas themselves are sentient; the caves are toothy maws of impossible beasts; the mountains themselves have eyes; the castles and houses and ancient tombs and temples are, themselves, imbued with a spirit… Is it hungry? Angry? Lonely?
Wednesday 5th May 2021 — Feeding Time
What does your monster eat?
Is it predator or prey? To a human understanding, does it look like what it is? If it eats meat, does it prefer to eat it dead or alive? If it’s not from this planet or dimension, does it struggle to find new things to eat? What does it look like when your monster eats? Is it private about eating? Does it look scary when it feeds?
Does it eat at all? Does your monster get its energy from the sun, from electricity, from magic, from something else entirely?
Alternate: From a monstrous POV, a human’s dietary habits seem monstrous and strange. Why?
Thursday 6th May 2021 — The Lycanthrope
The werewolf is a person who turns into a wolf, typically at the time of the full moon. Lycanthropy is the name of the condition of being a werewolf, or someone who turns into some other animal.
The variations on the werewolf are infinite — the core is often people bitten by strange beasts and left forever cursed with their regular transformation (for example, in The Wolf Man); but a curse is also possible, such as when kings are turned into wolves as punishment for their hubris (as with King Lycaon in Metamorphoses); or of course, a curse inherited, such as when young men who come into their inherited lycanthropy and suddenly have a whole host of new puberty concerns (Teen Wolf).
And it needn’t be a wolf at all — there are all manner of shapeshifters between one myth and the next, and as much as there are werewolves there might be werelions, werebears, werebats, et cetera, et cetera.
For your lycanthrope, why not explore:
What animal or creature does your lycanthrope turn into? A wolf, a bear, a lion, a snake, a bird? Something magical — a phoenix, a unicorn, a griffin, a dragon?
Once transformed, can your lycanthrope be distinguished from the normal edition of the beast? What are the differences, for example, between a werewolf and a wolf?
Can your lycanthrope transform at will? Is it influenced by their emotion? Is it kept to a regular schedule? Can that schedule be interrupted? For example, if it’s a monthly cycle like someone’s menstruation, can they go for periods without transforming or with “spotty” transformations? If it’s with the phases of the moon, does hiding from the moon help? What happens if you send them to another planet?
Is the transformation painful? Physically or mentally taxing? Are there any health problems associated with lycanthropy?
When transformed, how conscious and aware of themselves is you lycanthrope? Do they know they’re transformed? Do they remember what they were?
Alternate: Sometimes, another monster turns into a human.
Friday 7th May 2021 — Adverse Weather Conditions
What weather is your monster happiest in? What weather is your monster least happy in?
Is your monster native to an area that’s extremely hot and humid? Very cold and dry? Is your monster used to heavy rains, droughts and little water, sandstorms, electrical storms, blizzards? If your monster lives in space or underwater, how are they affected by solar flares or tropical storms, shifts in tides and gravitational flows?
How has your monster evolved or developed to handle these weather conditions — or, is there anything your monster hasn’t evolved for, and struggles with?
Alternate: Your monster is a house-monster, and will not be going outside. They would like a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa and a nice comfortable bed, please and thank you.
Saturday 8th May 2021 — The Monster In Love
Your monster’s in love — what do they do about it?
Does your monster have any particular mating rituals or ways in which they show their affection? Does your monster mate for life, does your monster date, does your monster romance singular or multiple partners? Does your monster yearn, do they pine? Do they bring gifts, do they do special dances, do say particular words or have mating calls?
Is their love reciprocated — is it even understood?
When one monster loves another monster, what does it look like? What does it look like when a monster is in love with a human? When a human falls in love with a monster?
Alternate: Your monster has never been in love, and is baffled — perhaps even disgusted — by the prospect. Do they do research? Demand an explanation?
Sunday 9th May 2021 — The Undead
The undead covers a lot of things under a similar umbrella, and it’s up to you whether they count as monsters or not — ghosts, ghouls, poltergeists, spirits, revenants, draugr, reanimated corpses like zombies, arguably vampires… To infinity, and beyond.
We can be talking spirits without bodies or with new bodies, corpses with new spirits in them, corpses controlled by necromancers or the like, and so on.
So, for this prompt:
For your undead monster, are they conscious, sentient? Do they control their own body? Do they remember when they were alive, if they were dead and then reanimated?
If they have a physical form, can someone tell they’re undead? Are they rotting, corpse-like, desiccated, all bones, all flesh, all muscle? Are they missing parts? Do they have any extra ones? Do they look the same way they used to? If they don’t have a physical form, can you see them at all? Can you see them only sometimes?
What sustains this undead monster? Do they feed off of anything, or are they just sustained by the air itself, by magic, by some sort of magical object or curse?
Was your undead monster once a human? Once a werewolf? Once a faerie, once a dragon, once some other creature entirely?
Alternate: Your monster is a necromancer, and they are not undead, but control and raise, in some way or another, the undead.
Monday 10th May 2021 — “… and add a monster.”
Take absolutely any iconic work you like, whether it’s a classic piece of literature, a poem, a piece of mythology or folklore, a fairy tale, a fable, a shanty or a campfire song — anything that’s in the public domain and might be well-recognised — and add a monster.
Have Sherlock Holmes meeting a vampire, reimagine Jean Valjean as a minotaur, give Mr Darcy a deep and affectionate longing for his local werewolf.
You don’t have to keep to the same characters or plots — rewrite an existing plot with monsters (Rapunzel or Cinderella, for example), have two plots crossover (what happens when the monsters in two myths team up to defeat the hero out to kill them?), add monsters or change the monsters in the narrative, or if it already has a monster, add another.
Alternate: Take a public domain domain monster and give them a break. Send Dracula on holiday, give the poor result of Frankenstein’s experiments a spa day, etc.
Tuesday 11th May 2021 — A Baby Monster
How do the monsters breed?
Do they lay eggs? Give birth to live young? Do something else entirely? Are monsters active parents? What happens when monsters interbreed, or breed with humans?
Is the breeding… fun? 😉
I know not everyone likes writing babies or kids, and equally that some people have come into this challenge specifically for the monsterfucking, so there’ll be two streams of main prompts — one focusing on the breeding for you child-free monsterfuckers, and another focusing more on monstrous baby development once an egg is laid or a baby is born, etc.
Feel free to do both if you want to do both, as one does lead into the other!
Questions about breeding and monstrous pregnancy:
Does your monster fertilise eggs for the purposes of a live pregnancy, do they lay eggs, do they clone themselves, do they breed in some other way?
If your monster has genitalia, what do they look like? Are they analogous to human genitalia? Are they particularly big or particularly small compared to the analogous human parts, if so? How compatible is your monster’s genitalia with a human’s genitalia — or another monster’s?
If there is a size difference between monster and partner, what comes of this? Are there any chemical differences between monster and partner — for example, does the monster’s touch impart a high or some kind of contact aphrodisiac?
Are any attempts at breeding viable? If the monster’s partner is filled with eggs, what happens the longer they carry them? If the partner does carry the eggs or the babies to the point of birth and laying, what happens? Is it a painful process? Will they survive it? Does the partner know they’re pregnant at all?
And the pregnancy/egg-carrying questions: how does the partner’s biology change to accommodate the pregnancy? Do they have any strange or unexpected cravings? Does their biology change in any unexpected questions?
Questions about monstrous child development:
How is the monstrous baby first conceived? Is it an egg laid, is it an egg fertilised, an egg fertilised and then carried, as the result of a live pregnancy, something else entirely? If they’re laid eggs, do they go through a larval stage or other similar development?
Are monstrous babies born alone, or in groups? Do they have a high viability rate? Do the monstrous babies eat one another? Do they eat their egg casing or their placenta, if applicable? If not, what do they eat — do they drink milk or blood, do they need their food pre-chewed by their parents, can they look for food themselves?
Are monstrous parents very active in caring for their offspring? Are monstrous babies born able to take care of themselves, able to have a sort of independence, or do they need to be cared for for a period first?
How fast or slow is a monster’s development? How long does it take for them to become fully grown? How much do they grow, and how does their body develop and change as they run through their lifecycle? Do they shed their skin or any body parts, do they change a lot materially?
Alternate: What does monstrous contraception look like? Do they have a concept of it? If they don’t, how do they feel about it being explained to them?
Wednesday 12th May 2021 — The Alien
What makes an alien?
Are they from another planet, another dimension? How similar are they to anything found on Earth? How did they get here?
Are they intelligent, sentient? Do they know they’re on a foreign planet or in a foreign dimension? How fit are they to survive on Earth? How do they respond to the animals, the new sounds, the new world, around them? What technology do they have? Do they appear to be aliens as people imagine them? Do they pilot aircraft as people think they do?
Alternate: A human (or another species from Earth) is the alien on another planet or another dimension populated with “monsters”.
Thursday 13th May 2021 — The Domesticated Monster
Let’s look at the monster domesticated.
The likes of Pokémon, fantastical creatures as beasts of burden or as steeds — unicorns and pegasi and giant spiders and dragons, for example — or other tamed monsters that have learned to live with humans, and live side-by-side with them.
Are monsters actively bred for a result, or do they domesticate themselves as cats and dogs did? Do they perform tasks or assist humans? Do they give milk or eggs or honey or silk or meat? At what point in their domestication are they? Are they happy? Are they well-treated?
Alternate: A monster gets a pet of their own — is it a fantastical species, or is it a dog, cat, bird, etc? Is it even a human?
Friday 14th May 2021 — Clothing Your Monster
Does your monster wear clothes or armour?
What sort of clothes or armour do they wear? Is it grown, made, bought, traded for? Do they wear any other kind of jewelry or decoration? Do they always wear it, or only for some occasion? What do they think of human clothes? Do they want to try wearing any themselves, or taking human fabrics for monstrous clothes?
Alternate: If your monster does not wear clothes, what do they think of human clothes? How do they feel about the fact that humans wear them? Do they have a full understanding of the separation between clothes and flesh?
Saturday 15th May 2021 — The Mermaid
A mermaid is a half-human, half-fish.
You can take this very literally, as in The Little Mermaid, with someone who has a human upper half and fishy bottom half (or the other way around…😏), you can think more along the lines of the fish-person we see in Abe Sapien from Hellboy or (also) in Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, or you can look at different variations on mermaids — the seal-like selkie who can remove their pelt to walk on land; the siren that calls to sailors so they dash themselves upon the rocks; naiads and other spirits of the water; the rusalke of the water, and so on.
Questions for your merfolk:
Do they belong in freshwater, saltwater, brackish water? Do they stay in the seas, in deep lakes, in ponds?
Do they regularly come to the surface, or do they live very deep below? What sort of temperatures are they used to, and how much sunlight? If they live in cold water or deep below the surface, are they very large and blubbery to ensure they can cope with the pressure and the cold?
Are your merfolk bioluminscent? Fish-like, cetacean-like, cephalapod-esque? If they do look similar to humans, with a human face or human body parts, do they look or feel like human flesh underneath the skin, or is it just for appearance?
What and how do your merfolk eat? Do they eat fish, meat, seaweed, plankton?
How do your merfolk feel about humans? About fish and other marine life? About animals on land? Other monsters?
Can your merfolk step onto land? Do they want to? Are they curious about what they find there? Do the humans nearby know about them, care about them?
Do merfolk live alone, in groups or as families? Are they migratory? How far do they travel, and for what reasons? Do they build towns and cities? How do they feel humans compare to them?
Alternate: A completely different non-merfolk-esque monster lives at the very bottom of the sea. What is it? How do humans come upon it? How big is it?
Sunday 16th May 2021 — The Gentle Kaiju
Kaiju is a Japanese genre of films— your Godzilla, your Mothra, your Rodan, all of these are kaiju: strange, gigantic beasts.
This prompt is centred around any monsters of superlative size that are trying their absolute best not to harm any of the little people scurrying them about them.
You can take this literally — think kaiju tip-toeing their ways through great cities and trying not to step on anything important, huge space beasts careful not to disturb planetary orbits in case they hurt anyone, or even the likes of the human trying not to step on any ants — or you can think of other monsters trying not to harm others despite some aspect of their biology making it difficult for them — Lovecraftian beasts doing their best not to do anyone any psionic damage, for example, or Medusa-like beings desperate to avoid people’s gazes in case they do any harm.
Alternate: An extremely tiny monster or another monster very easily harmed by human activities needs to kept safe.
Monday 17th May 2021 — Monstrous Transformations
How does a monster transform?
Does in transition between one form or another, like a werewolf, or between forms for land versus water? Does it regularly transform or transition through different physical presentations? Does it shed its skin, leave its old body behind? Does it grow new teeth or claws or body parts? Does it transform in response to disease or ailment?
Does a human transform slowly into a monster? Does a monster transform into another? Is this transformation willing, conscious — is it against all desperate attempts to prevent it? Is it painful? Is it agony?
Alternate: A monster expresses deep curiosity about human transformations — perhaps the differences between a child and an adult and their scale of growth, perhaps the apparent transformation when a human changes clothes, or puts on a mask, or even make-up.
Tuesday 18th May 2021 — Angels & Demons
A demon is typically an evil spirit or devil, and are sometimes thought to be fallen angels; angels are typically benevolent spirits, often thought of as celestial messengers.
Being as they’re often thought to be celestial or infernal, do you think of them as being from another dimension? How well do they mesh with Earth, from their own perspectives and human ones? How do they look or appear? Do they have to present themselves in a strange or unusual form? How do they communicate with humans — and why? Are they evil, benevolent, or simply neutral?
Are angels and demons separate things? How many kinds of angels and demons are there respectively? If they’re separate, do they communicate with one another, balance with one another?
Alternate: A monster that is not a demon or angel decides to present itself as one or the other. What is it? Why does it present itself this way?
Wednesday 19th May 2021 — Monstrous Flora
Your monster is plant- or mushroom-based!
(Or lichen-based, or algae-based, or moss-based, or coral-based, or…)
What does it look like? What makes it different from a mammalian or scaly monster? Where does it come from? How does it move, how does it breathe, how does it eat? Does it sleep? Does it 😏… you know? Is it good at it?
Alternate: Your monster lives codependently with, or lives inside, some sort of plant. What does that co-evolved relationship look like? How big is the plant? What does it look like?
Thursday 20th May 2021 — The Monster in History
Throughout history, the perception of your monster has changed over time.
Is your monster immortal? Over the progression of recorded history, has it been this same monster recorded in one sighting after another, in art or in story? Or, is your monster the latest generation of a species or line of inheritance that has gone on for a long while?
How much has your monster’s culture changed and developed in that time — has it changed in reaction to or alongside human cultures? How accurate has human perception of your monster been as the centuries have rolled by? How has art or stories about your monster changed in their telling?
How has the monster reacted to changes in human history, or different events as they have happened?
Does your monster even notice the passage of time? Are they in some way insensible to it, or do they experience it in a way humans don’t?
Alternate: The monster is a time-traveler! How do they do this? Why?
Friday 21st May 2021 — The Hybrid
A few things are bred together to create a monster, whether that monster be sublime or an abomination before the universe!
Think about griffins, pegasi, basilisks, cockatrices, and of course the manticore — any sort of beast made by combining one creature with another.
What creatures have been combined to create this monster? Has a human been one of them? How has this combination been achieved — via actual interbreeding, magically assisted or otherwise, via alchemy, a curse, or some other magical process? Has this creature literally been stitched together and then reanimated? How have the different creatures contributing to the creature changed its behaviour or its abilities?
Alternate: An attempt is made to create a hybrid… and unfortunately this is not the result. What is?
Saturday 22nd May 2021 — Kept Captive
The monster is captured.
How big or small is your monster? How was it captured — was bait used to draw it in, such as a food stuff, a copied call? Was it herded into an ambush? Was it trapped under a cage, in drop trap, in a magic trap? How easy was it to capture — did it take a long time, were several attempts made? For what reason was the monster captured?
Now kept captive, how big is your monster’s enclosure? Is it a cage, a glass box, physical chains or bondage, something else entirely? How long has it been there? Is it alone — would it rather be alone than the alternative? Is it struggling with its captivity? Is it marking out the amount of time it has been kept trapped, screaming at its captors, harming itself in its desperation for escape?
Is it likely ever to be freed?
Alternative: A human is kept captive by a monster.
Sunday 23rd May 2021 — The Human Is The Monster
From the perspective of the narrator, the human is the monster.
Who or what is made to fear them? What makes the human so monstrous in their eyes? Is it to do with the human’s size, their appearance, their behaviour, the nature of humans as a collective?
Alternative: The human thinks they’re thought of as the monster — the real monster is behind them (figuratively or literally).
Monday 24th May 2021 — The Dragon
A dragon is a mythical creature, often large and scaly, with variations found the world over.
Is your dragon extremely big, or very small? Is it indeed scaly, or does it appear so? Is it some form of sea serpent, or does it fly? Does it have wings, fins, a tail, teeth? Does it have very powerful senses, or different ones entirely to what one might expect? Does it have a mouth, eyes, a tongue, ears? Does it breathe fire or ice, have gills? Does it have some other supernatural power — telepathy, telekinesis, affect the weather or the tide?
What does your dragon eat? Does it eat meat, vegetables? Does it feed off of magic?
Does your dragon hoard anything — gold, jewels, young people out for a wander? Livestock? Something else entirely?
Alternate: An ancient dungeon, temple, or some other monument, is marked by a huge statue of a dragon. Something else inhabits it.
Tuesday 25th May 2021 — The Monster Dies
It’s the end of the story — or perhaps the beginning.
The monster dies.
Alternate: The monster dies… but only for a while.
Wednesday 26th May 2021 — The Hive-Mind
The monsters in this one are multiple.
They share a hive-mind, whether that hive-mind is created by pheromones, by fungus or infection or disease, by magic, by telepathy, by technology, or something else entirely. How many beings are part of this collective? Do they exist in conjunction with one another, and move as a swarm or a hive? Do they synchronise their movements, and work together toward a common goal? Can they work independently, or only as a group?
Can others be inducted into this hive-mind, willingly or otherwise? Is this painful or uncomfortable? Does it wipe away what experiences came before?
If a member of the hive-mind travels far away, do they remain connected to the whole? How is this hive-mind used, when beings work independently? Can it be sensed or its effects be noticed by outsiders? What is its everyday function?
Alternative: A being once a member of a hive-mind or a collective is severed from it, and now alone. Are they grieving? Do they feel free? Are tasks suddenly more difficult or easy for them? How do they feel?
Thursday 27th May 2021 — The Fae
The fae are supernatural beings or spirits found in a variety of folklore.
The fae are often associated with woodland, bodies of water, bogland, or other particular areas, but there are variations on variations of different fae legend: elves, brownies, merfolk, y tylwyth teg, the bean sidhe, selkies, gnomes, kobolds, leprechauns, nymphs, pixies…
In a lot of modern fantasy, the fae are associated with rigidity around law and rules, certain contracts, and many superstitions are associated with fae or fae-like beings, where one offends them at one’s peril.
What makes the fae monstrous? What makes them frightening and an object of horror for others? What rules do they follow and expect others to follow? What superstitions are associated with them?
Alternate: The fae are introduced to pop culture depictions of fairies. What is their response?
Friday 28th May 2021 — The Monster Extinct
The monster has been extinct for thousands of years, if not hundreds of thousands, and based off of the evidence of them — stories, fossils, remains, old art, people are trying to back-engineer what they were like, what they looked like, how they communicated.
How accurate are they? How off?
Alternate: The monster doesn’t exist yet, or is a long way off, but has been told about in prophecy, or glimpsed in visions of the future. Are these glimpses accurate to the truth? Do they tell the whole story?
Saturday 29th May 2021 — Cultural Differences
What does cultural exchange look like between monster and human, or between two monstrous cultures?
How do these distinct cultures affect one another or interact? Are there large cultural differences between the monstrous cultures and the human ones? Are there any moral, ethical, aesthetic, economic, political, legal, or other cultural aspects that are very much at odds between some cultures and the others?
For example, do the human and monstrous cultures both have money? Do they treat money as of the same importance? Do they rank things in the same orders of importance? Do they have similar customs around politeness, greeting, language? Does each culture respect the others, or do they consider themselves superior or inferior?
Alternate: A human has never had much experience of the culture they were born of — they only know the monstrous culture they were raised by and into. What does that look like?
Sunday 30th 2021 — The Minotaur
It’s my birthday and the minotaur is my absolute favourite, so! Minotaurs!
The classical minotaur was the son of Pasiphaë and the unwilling stepson of King Minos of Knossos: born with the body of a man and the head and tail of a bull, he was declared monstrous and trapped within the labyrinthine maze beneath the great palaces of Knossos, until the hero Theseus came to slay him dead.
Today, the minotaur is the name for any half-bull half-human delight, tragic or otherwise.
Alternate: You needn’t limit yourself to a half-bull half-human if you feel the need to abandon literal perfection — go for the drider, perhaps, a half-human half-spider, return to the merfolk of several prompts above, and go half-human, half-fish, the satyr, half-goat half-human.
Whatever it is, make it half-human, half-something else, and then decide:
Is your monster cursed? Were they made this way, were they born this way? Are they happy? Are they the same as their family members, or are they different? If they are the latter, are they loved and accepted, or made an exile?
What are the benefits and negatives to their physical appearance and to their biology? Are there any aspects that might be unexpected?
Are they viewed by people in general as frightening, intimidating, unusual, strange, incredibly sexy? Are they treated as a monster?
Monday 31st May 2021 — Happily Ever After
The monster lives happily ever after…
What does that look like?
Alternate: Or, your monster has a tragic ending — because you’re the monster, apparently! 😒😭

mimic Osmosian thoughts-
1. 4 main limbs, two sets of smaller wing/arms. One on shoulder girdle looking area one on pelvic girdle looking area. 2. Default 'face' a pair of 'eyes' peering out of a heavily shadowed face. (think that one nightmare in Felidae with the faceless doctor and the white void) 3. Spread wings and body to look intimidating and also skuttle really quickly. (think how Spirit from Oban fucking accordions open b4 transforming)
more humanoid stance good for narrow spaces, accordion stance for moving fast long distance in open areas.
exoskeleton-like skin/hide with visible seams at the joints. Covers belly, goin, and soles (palms) with touch matter for protection.
eye tracks are cool and more aliens should have them. eye tracts along the seams of the bits that accordion out with the eyes actually on the limb parts ie. chest /back eyes and hip/groin/butt eyes
mouth-like pouch at base of rib cage area. For storing things like chunks of material to absorb from or eggs or food for later. Can talk out of it
acting human is a very low effort disguise. Tuck the wings, hide the tail, alter face pigment and that's it. Maybe a hat for the antlers if you don't want to look goth
a fake face and a nonobvious real face. Mouth is quite actually large, head can rotate more than a humans. just kinda flips the whole above chin bit back, the the face is a lid and its just many big sharp teeth in the front and massive crushing molars in the back. could just fit a whole sub in there. gone in one.
someone trying to make out with Kevin and finding out that his face is just a drawing on a plane of flesh. And Kevin laughing at them b/c if it really took them getting that close to figure out they coulda been osmosian food if he weren't friendly
oh! in his matter forms not having his 'face'. The others thinking he's just shielding his face with extra material and wondering how he sees while fighting like that
osmosian face mimicry only working on the species they want to mimic and not others? like their default working on humans passably, better if actually decide to mimic them and not just letting superficial similarities carry shit (Kev was raised with humans his default really is 'human'). World have to actively move shit around to trick a tetramand or such
picture, Kevin actively attempting to mimic Argit without absorbing and just moves his mass around and recolors things. He manages it for the most part other than the size
absorbing to shapeshift= energy cost stops at just the transforming? shifting shit to actively mimic things= costy energy to hold nonbase forms but don't have to absorb a sample first? would be a good tactic to get close enough to prey to absorb from them
do love the idea of Ossys with devil tails. Flexible, prehensile, can stab with the pointy ends (arrow, spade, fork type endings). Can shift mass into them or add mass from matter to make the tails stronger/thicker
picture a littler of ossy grubs peaking out of the pouch mouth. tiny babies like how newborn puppies are teeny. Big as hell hybrid babies. (Ossys @ humans: why are yer babies so damn big?)
"I almost died passing that big ass egg! How do you human manage that shit?" "Oh, uh, a decent amount of the time we don't. Plenty of folks had to... just get cut out of their dam." "My condolences to yer fucked up evolutionary history that resulted in that."
Devin: *notices that he's getting concerningly large for the small number of eggs he can tell are forming* Devin: Hey~ Quick question but uh how big are human grubs when they come out? Eva: Oh, uh, between 6-9 lbs. Why? Devin: Oh, no reason. Just gonna go update my will.
am considering just exactly would a hybrid work. Am still attached to hybrids become more apparently ossy over time thing. A baby hybrid being nigh indistinguishable from a regular baby of the nonossy's species? Start getting powers in their early pretweens to mid teens and then getting more ossy physical features as puberty goes on?
which would probably be terrifying for hybrids not informed of the wonderful changes that may happen to their body
i assume hybrids would probably never 100% look like a proper ossy, especially not low content ones, but folks could def tell there's ossy in there
#nix meows#ben 10#osmosians#headcanons#back after 1000 yrs#this is of course only a little under half of a chat i've been having with kariachi

Rebellion: Chapter 4
Read on AO3 or FFN
Status: In-Progress
Note: All characters are mirror universe.
Pairings: Mirror!Christopher Pike x MirrorFem!OC (Aalin)
Rating: Mature
Word Length: 1.2k
Chapter Summary: Meet Mirror Aalin (OC) and her father.
Summary: In the Terran Universe, Christopher Pike and Enterprise are returning home in triumph after five years of conquests expanding Georgiou’s possessions. Gabriel Lorca is plotting to seize power. The rebels have instigated a new wave of unrest and uprisings. This is the story of the years leading up to Discovery's appearance in the mirror universe.
Author’s Note: This story assumes the Lorcas traded places in 2255 before the Battle of the Binary Stars. It is a companion story to Terran Multiverse.
Excerpt: 2230 – Twenty-Three Years Ago, On the Coast of Flinders Island Tasmania
Two centuries ago, once the Terrans conquered Betazed, an intensive breeding program began coercing subjugated males into seeding human females volunteering to bear the next generation in Terran evolution and enslaving Betazed females forcing them to carry the children of selected human males. All for one goal – producing Terran telepaths. It failed. The hybrid children who did possess the alien DNA markers could sense emotions but not read thoughts. And the trait did not inherit true in subsequent generations. Their skills became less accurate and picked up only the strongest, harshest feelings. The DNA degradation worsened as it was passed down and the talent disappeared after six generations.
One and fifty hundred years ago a eugenics experiment spliced the genes for Betazed thought reading and Vulcan touch telepathy into Terran ova. The eggs were then fertilized by those males considered genetically ideal Terrans and implanted into surrogate mothers. The results were frightful, the children went mad at the onset of puberty when Pon Farr struck, an unintentional legacy from the Vulcan DNA. A few of this first generation survived long enough to reproduce. Their children experienced a similar fate. By the third generation half the children exhibited a limited capacity to read active thoughts through touch, an amalgam of the Betazed and Vulcan talents. But they were still highly unstable and eventually descended into madness. In the next generation the trait became recessive. Males could pass on the gene but never again exhibited any mind reading abilities. And even if a female inherited the necessary alleles from both parents, the trait only manifested in one out of 10 million Terrans. When it did, their gifts were stronger and more accurate than their parents. Selective breeding continued to concentrate the ability in the few born with its potential.

I, unfortunately, haven't played FFVII yet (once I get my computer fixed I'm gonna play the original, CC, then the remake) but I was sucked into the fandom nonetheless. Can you explain to my why Hojo is so creepy? He just looks a little greasy & stereotypically evil to me tbh.
Anon he literally tries to breed a human (Aerith) and a cat/dog creature (Red XIII / Nananki) because they are the last of their dying races, and that’s not even close to the most fucked up shit he’s done on or off screen. It’s not even relevant to the main plot — it’s just what he casually likes to do in his lab on like fucking Tuesday or whatever.
Even Sephiroth canonically describes him as “a walking mass of complexes”.
Anyway, an excerpt from The Very Long List of Hojo’s Human Ethics Violations (spoilers):
> Openly admits to recovering dissecting Aerith’s biological mom and storing the body.
> Captures a beaten down 16 y/o Cloud Strife and 18 y/o Zack Fair after their miracle win over a crazed Sephiroth at Nibelheim and experiments on them for nearly 5 years.
> Indirectly causes the death of Zack, who escapes from the labs with a comatose Cloud and goes on the run from ShinRa for about a year.
> Directly and indirectly causes basically all of Cloud’s mental issues.
> Blows a hole in Vincent’s chest when Vincent tries to put a stop to him experimenting on Lucrecia/unborn Sephiroth/his fuckery in general; experiments on Vincent and makes him into an immortal demon hybrid thing.
> Sephiroth is his son and he doesn’t give a single solitary fuck about him outside of how strong he can make him/how much alien shit he can inject him with/etc. Sephiroth is his “greatest creation” in a purely scientific manner. Experimented on Sephiroth in the womb.
> Not explicitly stated, but the strong implication is that Sephiroth had an absolutely nightmarish childhood because of his ties with Hojo. Even hates the idea that a teenaged/young adult Sephiroth becomes close with “Hollander’s (another ShinRa scientist’s) rejects”, Angeal and Genesis.
> Basically puts Sephiroth on the battlefield before he even hits puberty.
> Basically ensured that Sephiroth didn’t have a fucking snowball’s chance in hell at remaining a sane, decent person and sets up/pushes the dominoes that drive that part of FFVII’s plot.
> Did I mention he straight up tries to breed a human girl and a talking cat/dog? Like Jesus Fucking Christ that deserves at least two mentions on this shitty list.
> Honestly it’s much easier to just list the good things he’s done, because that’s just a blank sheet of paper. Like, he can’t even run Sephiroth’s fan club without making it creepy/invasive.

weirder thoughts on alix's alien biology (kinda nsft while i figure out a readmore on mobile? definitely not just referencing random shit i read online)
he hatched from an egg, and reproduces the same way. internal fertilization. the gorilla grip coochie is necessary
whatever hatches always comes out as a perfectly normal and edible fish. he's not sure why either
he's not the only one of his kind and there are a lot more hybrids, but like deep sea fish, the chances of meeting one another are low. but when they find each other they will just kinda Know
bringing him back to Earth will probably kill him rather gruesomely, like bringing a deep sea fish to the surface
has bioluminescent stripes on shoulders, waist, and thighs. he has control over their glow intensity, unless he's horny, and then the glow controls go to makimg "look at me and fuck me" signals. the intensity of his glow can be strong enough to temporarily blind another fish or flashbang a human; useful for hiding
fishman form has very smooth and slippery skin. doesn't have scales. skin produces a very thin layer of "mucus" that makes it hard for him to dry off. has heightened senses in fishman form, mostly smell, hearing, and touch
he's actually considered a teen by the standards of his mother's species, and his slow and gradual fishy changes are like. puberty number 3
his mother is capable of "weird magic shit", being the reason why his father is suspiciously rich after making a strange deal with her (alix himself being conceived as part of said deal). alix isn't able to do that weird magic shit.. yet

Luci On An Adventure: Hybrid
Luci knew that at some point the girls would find out that he was a mermaid. He wanted to be open and honest with them about why he took so many showers and drank so much water, and this was the perfect opportunity! Thankfully they both took it in stride and even remembered that he had told them that he was an alien when they were younger. Luci never knew how people his own age would react to him being an occult, but seeing their carefree attitude towards the revelation, lifted a weight off of his shoulders.
Previous | Beginning | Next
~Transcript under the cut~
“Well I guess I can tell you guys~”
“I found out that I was a mermaid when I hit puberty. I got in the water and bam! Tail.”“Oooh~ Our little Luci hit puberty?”
“Hey!” “Imani! You’re teasing him!” “Hahahaha, sorry I couldn’t help myself”
“But I thought you were an alien Luci?”
“Ever heard of a hybrid? I’m both!” “That’s awesome!”

Okay so, the episode with half-human/half-Heatblast kid was actually one of the first episodes I had ever seen.
And honestly, he's the only one of the Plumbers kids I can see NEEDING that retcon from Omniverse.
Not so much the "human/alien" relationship his parents had, just uh...
I imagine some help from either magic or a medical procedure to produce him.
Even if he WAS the only one of the hybrids whose powers involved switching between human and alien forms instead of starting out LOOKING human and growing into an alien form once he hit puberty.
I mean. Yeah.....
