Former Hinds County interim sheriff Marshand Crisler has been sentenced to 2½ years in federal prison for soliciting and accepting bribes during his unsuccessful 2021 campaign.

U.S. District Court Judge Tom Lee sentenced him Tuesday for the two counts he was convicted of in November. Crisler received concurrent sentences of 30 months in custody of the Bureau of Prisons, followed by three years of supervision and an order to pay a $15,000 fine, according to court records.

Crisler faced up to 10 years in prison. He remained out on bond until his sentencing.

The court recommended Crisler to be assigned to the nearest facility to Jackson. Nearby federal facilities are in Yazoo City, Aliceville, Alabama, central Louisiana and Memphis.

Crisler was charged with soliciting and accepting $9,500 worth of bribes during his 2021 campaign for Hinds County sheriff in exchange for favors from a man with previous felony convictions and giving ammunition the man can’t possess as a felon.

The jury heard from several witnesses, including Crisler himself and Tonarri Moore, the man with past felonies and pending state and federal charges who the FBI recruited as an informant.

Parts of recorded conversations between the men, which Moore made for investigators, were played in court.

During several meetings in Jackson and around Hinds County in 2021, Crisler said he would tell Moore about investigations involving him, move Moore’s cousin to a safer part of the Hinds County jail, give him a job with the sheriff’s office and give him freedom to have a gun despite prohibitions on Moore having one.

Crisler was found guilty after a three-day trial in Jackson. The jury took about two hours to reach a unanimous verdict for both charges .

In November after the verdict, his attorney, John Colette, told reporters his client and family were disappointed in the decision and Crisler planned to appeal.

Crisler was indicted in April 2023 – the same year he ran again for Hinds County sheriff. He lost in a runoff election to Tyree Jones, the incumbent Crisler faced two years earlier.

Pro-Life Activist Bevelyn Beatty Williams Votes for Trump Before Turning Herself in to Federal Prison

On Wednesday, a Tennessee wife, mother, and activist who gained popularity for speaking out against the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement cast her ballot before reporting to a federal prison. 

In August, Bevelyn Beatty Williams, 33, was convicted in a federal court of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act) and was sentenced to 41 months in prison. Williams cites her Christian faith as what led her to demonstrate at an abortion clinic in June 2020, in the wake of then-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) signing abortion reforms into law the previous year.

On Tuesday, Williams shared that her stay of appeal was denied:

My legal team worked tirelessly to submit a stay of appeal so I could be home on bail while appealing this case for the sake of my daughter and husband. Unfortunately, the judge, who also sentenced me, denied the appeal. I have now been assigned a federal facility to report to and must surrender tomorrow at FCI Aliceville.

In her post, which included a 17-minute video, Williams continued to lean on her faith and encouraged her followers and supporters to vote and continue praying for her, writing:

My family and I remain hopeful and are trusting God through this challenging time. The Bible is clear that persecution will happen, but ministry continues, even in prison. Our job as Christians is to be a light, especially in dark places. My legal team is still working on several things, but for now, this is where I need to be. Please don't forget to vote and do all you can to elect leaders who stand for justice. Keep praying for me. I love you all and appreciate your continued support.

On Wednesday, before surrendering at a federal detention facility in Alabama, Williams and her husband, Rickey, took to social media to share that they cast their ballots for former President Donald Trump.

In a two-minute video, Rickey speaks on the traumatic experience of separation their two-year-old daughter faces, pointing to the politics of the Biden-Harris administration. He condemns former President Barack Obama's rhetoric on black Americans as the Williams family is pulled apart.

Williams previously told RedState that she anticipated Trump would pardon her if he wins the November election, saying:

Trump said that there is a persecution of Christians and that the first thing is he going to do is be there for Christians. So, yeah, I expect him to be there for Christians.

Alice Marie Johnson (born May 30, 1955) is a criminal justice reform advocate and former federal prisoner. She was convicted in 1996 for her involvement in a Memphis cocaine trafficking organization and sentenced to life imprisonment. In June 2018, she was released from the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville, after President Donald Trump granted her clemency.

She was born in Mississippi, and her memoirs recount growing up as one of nine children of sharecroppers, becoming pregnant as a sophomore in high school, and working as a secretary.

She had become involved in the drug trade after she had lost her job at FedEx, where she had worked for ten years, due to a gambling addiction; this was followed by a divorce and the loss of her youngest son in a motorcycle accident. She filed for bankruptcy in 1991, and foreclosure of her house followed.

She was arrested in 1993 and convicted in 1996 of eight federal criminal counts. She was convicted of money laundering and structuring. The indictment, which named 16 defendants, described her as a leader in a multi-million dollar cocaine ring, and detailed dozens of drug transactions and deliveries. Evidence presented at trial showed that the Memphis operation was connected to Colombian drug dealers. US District Judge Julia Gibbons said she was “the quintessential entrepreneur” in an operation that dealt in 2,000 to 3,000 kilograms of cocaine, with a “very significant” impact on the community. Co-defendants Curtis McDonald and Jerlean McNeil were sentenced to life and 19 years in federal prison, respectively. Several other co-defendants who testified against her received sentences between probation and 10 years. She acknowledged that she was an intermediary in the drug trafficking organization.

She has become an advocate for criminal justice reform. She called for an end to mandatory sentencing.
