The thing with the Alice x Bumby ship and people who support it not only don't understand the ramifications of what Bumby did to Alice and that it's pretty obvious he was continuing with his obsession with Lizzie.

Alice looks very much like her older sister and shares personality traits with Lizzie. So Alice would have ended up the same as Lizzie, assaulted and murdered. Because in terms of the type of serial offender Bumby is, the likelihood of him repeating the same crime was extremely high.

But also they don't understand that Bumby was not only targeting Alice but children, something that you can see in actual, real-life serial offenders like the Golden State Killer, Ted Bundy, or even Richard Ramirez. These were sexual sadists, Bumby is also a sexual sadist. Not to mention, Bundy worked in a suicide prevention call center so I don't know how you cannot draw the comparison.

So, I have had the term "anti" thrown at me, and normally, genuinely, I'm of the mind "I don't like this ship, so I'm not going to read it" because policing people over fictional ships is a waste of time. And I'll be the first to admit I especially hate this ship because I HAD several Bumbys in my life. I was sexually abused as a little girl, so I especially hate this character. And we do have several CSA survivors in fandom, they have had the same feelings. If you're writing a ship that mirrors our trauma, yeah, it's gonna piss people off. But I'm not gonna be mad enough to throw out death threats.

However.

And this is a big HOWEVER.

Largely, the biggest reason as to why I don't like it because anyone who dabbles in this ship cannot manage to keep it IC (in character). They fundamentally don't understand Alice's characterization:

1. Alice is an extremely guarded individual, literally anyone around her treats her like a burden, object, or belittle her sense of being.

2. It's highly unlikely Alice is going to romantically gush over someone, much less someone she put into a position of a mentor, so the swooning doesn't make any sense to me. If you're writing Alice in a romantic relationship, you have to keep in mind that it probably took a WHILE. When I write Alice in romantic relationships, it's a slow burn build up.

3. She likely is very reluctant to share the burden of her mental illness (unless slow burn, see above), so, again, Alice is not going to be the how to open up to people so easily.

4. Alice is extremely independent, most times. You can see she'd rather do it herself, without help unless it's a necessity, and she puts more trust in herself than in people. So, it wouldn't make sense for Alice to open up to Bumby, a doctor, outside of a patient.

And like. These shippers tend to "woobify" Bumby. He's not gonna be chivalrous.

1.He's a sociopath, so his empathy is non-existent. He didn't see Lizzie as a person, he saw her as an object he was entitled to.

2. He showed little regard to Mr. Liddell, his superior, someone he kept going to see, as his mentor. He exploited that dynamic only on the account of Lizzie.

3. The man has a superiority complex, so he won't see anyone as his equal. His ego was too big and he was so full of himself and he underestimated Alice (like everyone else) and doesn't care for her, at all.

So, every time I see this ship pop up, these characters are so woefully OOC (out of character) and that shows me you didn't understand the source material.

If you're into a dark ship, that's fine, but you're essentially re-writing characters so far from the original source material that they may as well be your own characters. You can find a dark ship with Alice, but pick someone better than Bumby. Like, guys, Bumby would have done the same thing he did to Lizzie to Alice and Alice found out at the last minute before he had the chance.

Alice’s head throbbed. The night preceding had been so restless, so topsy turvy, so utterly confounding that at present she found herself in a state which could only marginally be considered conscious. The chemist’s brows turned up in a frown from behind the counter.  

“Feeling alright, Alice?”

“If I were, would it make much sense to be paying you another visit?” She muttered, shoving the doctor’s half-crumpled slip towards the man behind the counter. With a humph and an adjustment of his glasses, the man turned and began rifling through a shelf of ceaselessly rattling glass bottles. Alice shut her eyes in a fruitless attempt to escape the sound, which felt to her much like a drill against the temple. At last the man produced her prescription, and she swallowed down one of the pills before even stepping foot outside. 

The dinginess of London in late autumn prattled on around her, everything washed in sepia from the cobblestone beneath her feat to the grubby children that scuttled past in a mad rush. The world, as grey and dull as it was, still seemed so intent on overwhelming her. She steeled herself with a measured breath. Perhaps she would find some peace back at Houndsditch, though she quite doubted it.

“What’s eating at you now, Alice?” The doctor asked when she arrived, though his eyes did not move from the newspaper spread over his lap. “Same as always, or has another of those pesky memories clawed its way to the surface?” 

Alice shook her head as she took a seat in the dim and dust-speckled office. The muffled sounds of the orphans could be heard on the floor above them, little feet scuffling along the floorboards, a cacophony of shrieks and whines. 

“It’s not a memory.” She said, with annoyed certainty. These recent visions, she knew were works of pure fiction. It was strange still; how they appeared to her with the same vividness as Wonderland so often did in her dreams. But this was not Wonderland, for she had explored each nook and cranny of her own world, and nowhere in it were there such things as killer rabbits or boys made of stars. 

“What then?” Bumby sighed, growing tired of her already. 

“Nightmares.” Alice replied. “I haven’t slept well in days. What little sleep I get is restless; tormented by living puppets.”

“I don’t suppose something made of wood could do much harm to a girl of flesh and blood.” The doctor scoffed. 

“It’s not me they’re after, it’s a boy. They’re killing him over and over…” Alice said, her brows furrowing together as the trailed off. Images of last nights dreams flashed in her mind: a theater gone up in flames, a poor boy lying dead on the ground, his limbs bent at odd and painful angles while a crowned monster towered over his body. “I try to call out to him, to help him, but he never hears me.” She finished, her voice softened. 

“Just a common manifestation of survivor’s guilt then.” The doctor retorted, waving her off as he returned to his paper. “Continue our usual treatment, Alice. If it worsens, I’ll write the chemist for laudanum.” 

“I think I’ve got quite enough pills already.” Alice protested, but she had clearly lost the doctor’s interest.

The cold, the dark, the empty, the usual climate in London. Even the strong blizzard doesn’t bother the little girl playing in the backyard of her house, she would not care less, and she was happily doing a snowman while her big sister was inside making hot chocolate for both.   The two girls were alone in the big house after their parents told them they were going the theater. The oldest sister was, of course, in fully in charge, but in spite of her hard countenance it was almost impossible to deny the wishes of her little adoration that is now outside. The agreement between them was: the girl will be able to be out if she goes early to bed. Time pass and the night comes, more obscure and chilly. The oldest stood outside in the front of the open door and pronounce loudly: - Alice! Get inside!   Alice come as quickly as her little foots let her and saying energy:-Lizzie! Lizzie! I saw someone! I saw someone flying! Lizzie picks up Alice in her arms while enters the house closing the door. She goes straight to the kitchen where two mugs accompanied with bread and butter were in the table.   Lizzie place Alice in one chair and then sitting in the next one. She started prepare the meal while the little one continuous the anecdote. - You wouldn’t believe, Lizzie, but it was real. He was flying, not so high, and what I could see he was a boy, much like your age. Wearing a white shirt… well it was more like a nightgown with long sleeves… anyway, and also brown pants… similar to the ones of that annoying student of Papa. Lizzie froze in her work, not because of the absurd ideas of it, but because of the mention of the unpleasant man in her presence. She said nothing letting Alice finish. -You know what was the most amazing? Lizzie moved her head denying in response. -He was barefoot! Sadly I couldn’t see how his face or hair looks. -That’s a pity. -I know. The silent reigns the table over a minute until Alice questions her sister. -Do you believe me? -I don’t know, Alice; I haven’t there to see it. -So you don’t. Lizzie stare at the girl black-haired trying to figure out if she was lying or not. But previous situations with Alice and the insistence of her wonderful little world lead her to a more safe option, forming an intelligent idea and avoiding hurt feelings. -It wasn’t one of your friends? -You mean… my friends from Wonderland? -Yes. -No way! Do you think I would not notice if it was one of them? I know the types of humans who inhabit in Wonderland apart from me and he was absolutely nothing like them! -Just a possibility. -No! Lizzie laugh, receiving a bad look. Then she order Alice to eat. After the meal and a few more distractions, comes bed time. The two sisters started changing clothes, brushing teeth’s, and free their hairs off the elaborate hairstyle. -Mama and Papa will delay? -Mama and Papa will take their time Alice. You promised me you would go to bed early. -May I have the window open? -Yes, you can. Once they give each other a goodnight kiss, Alice accommodates her little body on bed hugging her beloved rabbit stuffed animal. Suddenly a cold enter her room through the window. She regrets the idea but she keeps quiet and doesn't anything. Eyelids begin to fail and tiredness caught her mind, a familiar feeling tugged at the girl and moments, seconds before falling into the hole, she listens clearly, no doubt it was, a laugh, a laugh of joy and fun traveling with the wind in the spacious room.

Well... it looked good... My first write! Just as I promised is here! I told you, I will started in the soft way. I thought it could be cute if Alice is a child, in a phase in her life where everything was perfect, her parents alive, Lizzie alive, where she was happy enough to be able to see Jack.
