Retrouvailles, After We Left a fan sequel to Before We Go

Ten years after meeting in Manhattan, Brooke seeks Nick out, with a terrible secret. ​ Act one, scene four. Behind the Window.

As Nick and Brooke approached, the signore observed their matching wedding bands. (1) "Ah, Mr. Vaughan, it's delightful to have you here. I'm a huge admirer of yours. And Mrs. Vaughan, the inspiration for your song, Retrouvailles. We are honored to have you here," the maitre D bowed respectfully. ​ "Yes, thank you. "  Brooke's eyes then opened wide. "I mean no, I'm not, I mean," she fumbled.

"Thank you," Nick interrupted with a smile. "My wife Hannah, she couldn’t make it."  He looked over at Brooke.

"I'm Brooke," she prompted.  "I'm an old friend." (2)

Nick gave her a sideways glance.  Then he looked back at the signore.  "One of my best friends," he corrected.  From the side he saw Brooke relax. ​ "Of course," the signore smoothly recovered. "Please follow me." He guided them inside to a table with a view of the front window and pulled out a chair for Brooke. "May I offer you a glass of wine?" the maitre D inquired.

Nick glanced at Brooke, and she turned to the signore. "I'll have the Friulano," she said without pause. "It's lovely for the summer."

The maitre D smiled. (3) "Excellent choice, signora." Another snap of his fingers summoned a young waitress carrying a bottle.

"And for you?" Nick gazed down and saw a pair of smiling blue eyes.

"Oh, I'm not familiar with wines," Nick stumbled. His face flushed. "I usually drink, um, Cabernet Sauvignon?" (4)

"I'm afraid I'm not well-versed in wines either," the waitress chuckled, her hand gently brushing his elbow. (5) Their eyes locked for a moment.  Nick's eyes widened.

A brief silence filled the air. The maitre D frowned slightly, but then Brooke spoke up. "Aglianico would be a similar," she suggested. (6) The signore smiled and turned back to Nick.

"That's alright," Nick stuttered. "I'll have what she's having." (7)

"Very good," the maitre D intoned approvingly. Another waiter appeared, presenting a plate of sliced focaccia and pouring olive oil into a dish of chopped thyme and oregano. With a nod, the maitre D dismissed the staff and bowed slightly to Nick and Brooke.

From outside, the melodic voice of a woman accompanied by a guitar reached their ears.

Nick took a sip of his drink and smiled. "Well, I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to meet Hannah. She would have been thrilled to meet you properly. I told her that you convinced me to return to the bar and win her back."

"It's nice of her to think of me," Brooke mumbled. She took a sip from her wineglass. (8) "This place is lovely," she observed, glancing around the restaurant.

"We won't have to rely on Danny for funds this time," Nick joked. (9)

"This time, it's my treat," Brooke's expression turned serious. She took another sip of wine.

Nick watched her carefully, and followed suit. "It's Danny's treat this time too, in a way. He usually takes care of all these things for me."

Silently, a waiter approached from behind. "Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn, are you ready to order?"

Both Nick and Brooke began to protest. "Oh, we're not..." Brooke started.(10)

The waiter patiently listened.

"Nevermind," Brooke whispered. "Apocollo di cinghiate con mostarda, per favore." (11)

"Excellent choice," the waiter replied. "We just added that to the menu." He turned to Nick.

Nick glanced at Brooke, and she returned his gaze. He pointed at the menu. "How do you pronounce this?" he asked.

"Bucatini all'Amatriciana. Certainly, sir," the waiter swiftly took their menus away.

"I'm glad I didn't ask you to order for me like in New York," Brooke playfully smiled.

"You didn't enjoy the poutine I ordered at the hotel?" Nick shook his head, feigning disappointment. (12)

"I had never tried poutine before New York," Brooke sniffed.

"You seemed to like it." Nick's tone turned serious.

"It was..." Brooke paused. "Good. Really good. Better than I had imagined."

"Better than you imagined? How can you say that about poutine?" Nick teased.

"Well, it looked all greasy and messy. Who would have thought of putting gravy and bacon on top of French fries?" Brooke laughed. "But at that moment, it was the best thing I had ever tasted." (13)

"I'm glad I could convert you. It's hard for me to go a week without poutine," Nick confessed.

"Don't you get tired of having it, again and again?"   Brooke questioned.

"I don't need a lot of change," Nick chuckled.

Brooke glanced out of the window. "You know, I haven't had poutine since that night ten years ago."

Nick tilted his head. "I thought you liked it."

Brooke turned back, agreeing, "I did. But it was an unusual day, and I was starving that night, and we had been through a lot," she paused to take a sip from her glass.

Nick studied her. "Maybe poutine wouldn't be as good anymore?" he suggested.

"Maybe," Brooke agreed.

"Well, I'm glad we can reminisce, even if it's just for a few hours," Nick reflected, pausing to think. He watched as Brooke took another sip from her glass.

"So, what's going on, Brooke?" Nick adopted a more serious expression.

Brooke paused. "What do you mean?"

"Don't get me wrong, I'm really glad to see you. But you're back here in Providence, a town you haven't returned to since graduation. You're back to art restoration, so you didn't come here to sell me art. And you weren't joking when you told Danny you needed a glass of wine." (14)

Brooke gazed down at the dregs in her glass.

Nick's face softened. "I meant it when I said I was glad to see you. Maybe I can help. Just so you know," he gave an impish grin, "I wouldn't extend that offer to most friends I haven't seen in ten years."

Brooke took a deep breath and nodded.

Moments passed. The woman with the guitar at the Firewater finished her song, and the applause gradually faded away.

Brooke reached into her purse, retrieving a phone and unlocking it.

"You're right, I should have called you earlier," Brooke sighed. "I've contemplated what I would say when we met again. And I promise you, this isn't how I envisioned it." She frowned, and her fingers danced as she scrolled to a page.

She handed the phone to Nick, who could see a picture of Hannah kissing an unfamiliar man. His face turned pale. From a distance, he could hear Brooke's voice. ​ "But I'm not here for help. I'm truly sorry, Nick. I saw Hannah at an art exhibit, with another guy. She's having an affair." (15)

1.  Give subtle clues as to Nick and Brooke's compatibility with each other. 2.  Brooke's theme of growing old. 3.  As a former art consultant, Brooke should be well versed in French and Italian culture and wines. 4.  Cabernet Sauvignon is French, not Italian. 5.  In general use only one supporting role when possible.  Like the security guard in 1.2 helps to push Nick's theme of isolation and Brooke's theme of growing old, we can use the waitress to be obviously youthful in contrast to Brooke's maturity.  Likewise she also sets off alarm bells with Nick, given his isolation and loneliness when dealing with his fans. 6.  Brooke knows her wines.  (R's note: but I don't, so I asked a friend.) 7.  More of Nick and Brooke's compatibility. 8.  Brooke again deflects away from Hannah. ​9.  Callback to Before We Go, when Danny comes up with $300 for Nick and Brooke. 10.  The waiter represents the audience.  We think that Nick and Brooke should be with each other. 11. On the family trip to Italy, this was our favorite dish. 12. In Before We Go Nick and Brooke order food in the hotel, and Brooke says surprise me. Poutine was not in the original movie.  It is a retcon addition, and it symbolizes Nick, just like the Capriccio symbolizes Brooke. 13.  Long subtext.  Saying that Poutine was what she wanted ten years ago but that was the past is a way for her to say the same thing about Nick. 14.  No oblivious male tropes!  Nick has been trying to piece out why Brooke has come back after ten years.  And it's not to sell him art... 15.  Boom goes the cannon!

Okay so some of you may be familiar with the fact that alchemy heavily relates to The Magnus Protocol, especially with the latest episode.

It's already admitted that Sam Khalid's name is at least inspired by Prince Khalid Ibn Yazid, a famous alchemist from the 7th century. Well I'd like to go a bit deeper, and point out more connections :

Alice Dyer -> Edward Dyer

Teddy Vaughn -> Thomas Vaughan

Colin Becher -> Johann Joachim Becher

Lena Kelley -> Edward Kelley

Celia Ripley -> George Ripley

Chester -> Robert de Chester

I've yet to find anything about Norris or Augustus but this is what I've got. But there's more ! There are connections !

Edward Dyer and Thomas Vaughan were both Rosicruscians (and friends, too), a subcategory of alchemists

Robert De Chester was the one who translated Khalid Ibn Yazid's works from Arabic to Latin

Johann Joachim Becher was German, then travelled to England and resided in Scotland

Edward Kelley worked with Robert Boyle (mentionned in MAGP 19)

I'm not sure exactly what to do with it, but that's what I've got. I'm going insane over that so expect some more over the next few days.

theory to chew over as we start the second season 1 break

I think Teddy is going to die before ep 30

Because I've been wracking my brains trying to think of why he is still in the story

in ep 1 i thought he was just there so Sam had an excuse to join the oiar (and to highlight that people can actually leave this job)

but he has popped up more than once now and interestingly everytime he does, he seems to be in a worse position then before

in ep 9 he talks to alice about losing the job he left the oiar for, in ep 18 he is still interviewing, and interviewing to be back in royal mint court building after just having left

i wonder if people can technically quit the oiar job but their life starts to spiral/go to shit after they leave (whether through shadowy government nonsense or eldritch forces nonsense)

(and i've just reminded myself; lena tried to kill that german IT guy, was he trying to leave but he knew too much?)

a few of our main casts have been waving big death-flags (my money is on Colin kicking the bucket too) but i think teddy dying would serve a few different purposes story-wise

first off, it highlights that no-one is safe- sure everyone is the oiar is neck-deep in trouble but teddy got out so he's okay right? wrong

second, given that alice has talked to him the most on-screen and it seems like they used to be close, his death might make her u-turn on the whole 'not-getting-involved-and-denying-as-much-as-she-can' business

third, if teddy dies due to oiar shenanigans or an external incident, it push sam further down this investigative rabbithole he is intend on following, paving the way for more plot threads/disasters down the line

just something to think about

Thanks! I read/have read a ton of books. My favourite genre as a child was fantasy, but I read almost everything except true crime*, thrillers, murder mysteries, self-help, and biography. But I do sometimes read those, my favourite thriller is Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney. I'm going to start with children's books because honestly, I find so much imagination in that genre.

Children's/YA Books: Gail Carson Levine, specifically The Princess Tales 1 & 2, and Ella Enchanted, among others Jean Little/Kit Pearson - these authors have the same vibe to me. Willow and Twig is a favourite from the first one, The Guests of War trilogy and Awake and Dreaming from the other. They both write coming of age novels for girls, both Canadian. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I loved the whole trilogy (haven't watched the movie). The story being based around real antique trick photos is my favourite part The Echorium Sequence by Katherine Roberts - a trilogy of books about magical singers with blue hair and their interactions with half-human magical creatures Margaret Peterson Haddix, specifically Running Out of Time, the Shadow Children series, and Double Identity. Margaret Buffie, who writes stories about teenage girls and ghosts. Also Canadian, which I guess isn't that surprising. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. Re-read it last summer and it's as good as I remembered. Roald Dahl, I really loved Matilda as a child, it's been fun to read some of these novels with my kids. Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar - and it's sequels. Amazingly quirky and funny stories about a class of students in a weird school

Fantasy: Mercedes Lackey, specifically the Five Hundred Kingdoms series and The Obsidian universe. I also loved the Elvenbane series, but due to the death of Andre Norton it may never be finished. I would advise caution if sexual assault is triggering for you, the ones I like are mostly free of it but that can come up in her other works. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - obviously. Also loved The Hobbit, have not read further The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin - the book opens with the triggering of an apocalypse. The world contains people who can control earthquakes A Baroque Fable by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - this book is so hilarious but I don't know if anyone has heard about it Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis L. McKiernan - and it's sequels. This is a romance retold fairy tale series

Science Fiction: Michael Crichton - who spans a bunch of genres but I'll put him here. I've read everything he's written and I recommend most of it. State of Fear has not aged well. His books are very fast-paced and Timeline has one of the best enemies to lovers. Orson Scott Card - I am aware, but Ender's Game is a masterpiece. He also has this single novel called Magic Street that is a sequel to A Midsummer Night's Dream. I also loved Memories of Earth but it's been a while since I read it. I, Robot by Issac Asimov - short stories about artificial intelligence and how it might go weird

Graphic novels: Astro City by Kurt Busiek - superhero, but more focused on how living in that world would affect normal people Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - every male on earth dies, except for one, and his monkey Fables by Bill Willlingham - after being attacked by an army of wooden soldiers, fairy tale characters and creatures seek refuge in a non-magical world (ours) Nimona by ND Stevenson - a villain gains a shape-shifting sidekick, but she is not what she seems Scurry by Mac Smith - post-apocalyptic earth, the main characters are all surviving mice. Best artwork I've ever seen in a graphic novel American Vampire by Scott Snyder- vampires have different traits depending on their home country, this is about the new, American species. Asterix and Obelix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo - a small group of powerful Gauls defend themselves against the Romans using a magical potion

Non Fiction: Stephan Pinker, I've read both of his trilogies on language and the brain. Trying to get through his huge book about violence The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks - writen by a neurologist, fascinating book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by Maya Dusenbery - what it says on the tin

Toddler/Young Child Books: The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone - I give you a 100% guarantee that if you read this book aloud, the kids will be fascinated. It is literally always a hit Robert Munsch - most of his books are amazing, but if you don't want to cry, DO NOT read the backstory of Love You Forever. The Paper Bag Princess was one of my favourites as a child. Little Critter - only the older ones, the new ones are religious for some reason. Just for You and I Was So Mad were favourites for my kids. Early lesson in unreliable narrators. Phoebe Gilman - Something From Nothing, the Jillian Jiggs series, The Balloon Tree... so many good ones! Really good illustrations too Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - a book about a pea who hates eating candy. This book is fun to read and my kids loved it (I have the box set) The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak - kids love when adults have to do weird things I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen - perfect opportunity to do a lot of funny voices The Mitten by Jan Brett - a whole bunch of animals squeeze into a mitten. That's the whole thing. It's great. The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland - and the rest of the series. These are fun to read because they rhyme. Jonathan Stutzman - my kids LOVE Tiny T. Rex and the Llama series. We haven't read the others An Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems - we have this entire series, they are a delight. An elephant and pig are very silly friends. Good drawings Dr. Seuss - be careful with him though, his books are quite long and can be hard to read, so I recommend waiting until your kids are a bit older. But The Lorax slaps and my personal favourite as a kid was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins

Other: Still Alice by Lisa Genova - or any of her books really. She is a neuroscientist and her books are really interesting explorations of different disorders. Book is better than the movie Warm Bodies by Issac Marion - zombie Romeo and Juliet Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - a novel that is also an intro to philosophy course Calvin and Hobbes - I own all of them, so excited for when my kids can understand them. I also love The Far Side, Zits, and the earlier Dilbert comics The Women in Black by Madeleine St. John - this book is absolutely charming. I saw the Netflix movie and then bought it right away.

*I avoid true crime because I have heard that the genre causes harassment to victim's families

General Note: I am aware that some of these authors are now considered controversial, some for more serious reasons than others. Sometimes flawed people make really good art. I mean, flawed people make all art because nobody on earth is perfect.
