Sure, I'd be happy to talk about Alice! It's been a hot minute since I talked about her I think. But here's a summary/some characters facts.

Warning for Spoilers Here Since this Talks about Things in Barok's Backstory, Also a General Warning Since Alice's Story Involves Conflict in/The Breakdown of a Relationship, and Victorian Era Sexism

Alice van Zieks (maiden name: Rask) is the estranged wife of Barok van Zieks. She was originally from America, the daughter of Dr. Simon Rask and his wife, Nora. Alice found her father's work fascinating and wished to follow in his footsteps, and while her father was supportive of this, others weren't so keen on her pursuing such a career. Eventually, she was persuaded that she couldn't pursue a career as a Coroner on her own without a husband who could financially support her by her uncle Vester, who had a vested interest in her abandoning (or at least putting on hold) her studies.

Alice's Uncle, Vester Rask, was a wealthy partner in a shipbuilding company, wished to increase his power, standing, and the security of his company by developing ties to the British nobility. He could only do so much without an heir he could marry off to an aristocrat, so he decided to try and see if he could rope his niece into playing the role (and persuade his brother to let this all happen ofc).

He managed to persuade all necessary parties, and so Alice went to England to participate in the London season.

There she met a young Barok van Zieks, introduced to her by Lady Harebrayne, the mother of Barok's long time friend Albert. Alice and Barok developed something of affinity for one another and became friends. At the point they met, it hadn't been terribly long since Klint's murder and he was still suffering very keenly from that loss. He didn't really keep anyone close, but Alice was the first in a while to treat him like a person rather than as the 'Reaper'.

He developed something of a crush for his debutante friend, but at first he thought it was too risky to express interest in her. But eventually something persuaded him it was worth trying. And due to youthful inexperience and not being in the best of headspaces, he rushed into things without really thinking them through.

Alice didn't have the same feelings Barok did, but he was the first person to take her seriously and appreciate her as she was, not what others thought she 'ought' to be. When he proposed she accepted, thinking perhaps she might return the feeling in time.

The first couple of years of their marriage were fairly good in terms of their relationship. But Barok were extremely protective, some may even say overprotective. (Although one could argue he was not entirely unreasonable given the dangers he faced due to his reputation and 'curse'.)

Alice wanted to continue her studies, and initially Barok strongly encouraged this. She met and was befriended by a certain Detective Sholmes and his young charge during this time (completely unaware that this young charge, Iris, was in fact her niece). But, when she expressed an interested in doing work for Scotland Yard, this didn't sit well with Barok (because in his mind it put her in the direct line of fire of his enemies). On this point, he would tried to dissuade her, and it became a sore point for the both of them.

Some of Barok's behaviors Alice discovered didn't sit well with her. He was not keen to talk much about certain aspects of his past at the time (for understandable reasons), but the lack of information upset Alice and in some cases led her to make some conclusions/consider some possibilities on her own (some incorrect).

And eventually, there were other problems in the relationship, conflicts and problems in communication (or due to a lack of communication in some instances) that eventually led to a breakdown in the relationship.

Eventually, Alice separated* from Barok and went to live with her parents again. Only she wouldn't be returning to America. Her father was instead invited by a work colleague he met in Britain to teach at a University in Tokyo, Japan. She would continue to pursue and wrap up her studies there.

(*Separated but not divorced.)

There, she was made to feel at home due to the kindness of her father's friend and work colleague, Professor Mikotoba and his daughter Susato. She also eventually met his adopted son, Kazuma. He didn't seem keen on her at first, maintaining a more detached sort of friendliness towards her (unbeknownst to her because Kazuma had an enmity towards her now estranged husband). But in the end the two of them found an accord, and Kazuma became one of her closest companions.

(Kazuma hoped she could be an ally against her husband when he sought his revenge, but that would later turn out to not come to pass.)

She also met and befriended fellow student Ryunosuke Naruhodo, eventually went to root for both of her friends in a debate tournament, when Ryu and Kazuma met one another and the start of their friendship happened.

At the start of canon, she has decided to fully cut ties with Barok, but as he's not keen to mutually agree to the divorce, she is summoned back to England to hash things out. So she ends up on the same ship Kazuma is taking to go to Britain himself to study law. But her journey back to England starts to go terribly amiss when Kazuma seemingly and suddenly ends up dead and her other close friend Ryunosuke is blamed for it.

(Spoilers: There are disagreements between her and Barok but eventually they come to understand each other. They do get divorced but are eventually able to be good friends again. Because damn it I need more stories of people who split up but it's not because they were bad people and things are eventually okay between them but they *don't* get back together.)

Character Facts:

Alice Enjoys Pencil Sketching, Nature Walks, Foraging, Reading, and Canning/Pickling Foods (in addition to her interest in Forensic Pathology)

Is near-sighted and needs glasses as a result

She is in between in terms of her age relative to other main cast members. At 27, she is five years younger than Barok (32), and four years older than her friends Kazuma (23) and Ryunosuke (23).

She has often played Chaperone for Susato and her friend Rei.

When moving about London, and not on duty (until the end of the games) she has to conceal her face from view or disguise herself to avoid being spotted by Barok's enemies. She has to change it up from time to time to avoid creating too obvious a pattern, but her preferred disguise is one of a widow in mourning, wearing heavy, concealing black clothes.

Hahahaha, music discussions are indeed for sharing and for archiving so I'm very glad I'm able to respond to this under an ask format! I'm just so so excited to ramble about music, it's not everyday that I find this opportunity (and a person willing to listen to it, obviously) so thank you so much once again <333.

As always, I assure you that you don’t need to know anything about the franchises! Even I myself sometimes don’t consume the franchise itself but listen to its tracks. The music I’ll be talking about is gorgeous on its own, and I’ll give you the context if I need to!

Light of the Seven - Game of Thrones

I’ll be honest, I never watched GoT. But this track has my heart in a chokehold. It tells a full story in the course of 10 minutes, and it never fails to leave me with chills down my spine. 

The calm piano section at the beginning and the subtle cello enters so sneakily, creating a wonderful ambiance ??? So distinguished. It introduces the main theme that’s going to be addressed a lot throughout the track, and it’s just so beautiful. The voices that enter at 04.44 ??? Instant goosebumps. It’s so ethereal, so mystical, it pokes at your curiosity and primal instincts of fear, and then the seriousness hits you at 05.22 with the passionate cello section being added to the voices, it’s so SHJDSNCS the way it builds up and builds up until the beautiful, gorgeous climax at 08.37 SHJCBJDCSKCD *clutches heart*

Barok van Zieks: Grim Reaper of the Great Court - The Great Ace Attorney

Likewise, I sadly haven’t played this game of the franchise yet but when it comes to music, Ace Attorney. never. disappoints.

The sinister aura of this track lures and seduces you the moment you start listening, the beauty of the HARPSICHORD and the STRINGS and the PERCUSSION and the TENSION it’s so aahsndcsj like !!! I literally can’t get enough. I have, like, a hundred Ace Attorney tracks that I want to put here, it’s so *screams*

The City (oneiric version) - Nihilumbra

Nihilumbra is a really nostalgic game for me which focuses on a character’s journey to find himself while trying to escape from the inevitable curse that he was born into and never giving up even though there is a constant voice that keeps demoralising him. That’s why his journey reminds me of Connor’s, just a bit :’) . 

This track is just so soothing. I’ve always loved the combination of piano and harp, and when the church organ enters to reinforce the ominous tension, it’s a sudden eargasm to me.

NOW, onto our beloved D:BH!

We’ve already yelled about Run With Me so I’ll pass that even though it’s still my favourite track. 

The Garden

I always start crying while listening to this, I still haven’t gotten used to the feels and dense nostalgia that the beginning gives me. It’s so overwhelming, so tense yet so soothing and ethereal at the same time, I’m just *sobs* I also adore the ambience videos made with this, inspired by the Zen Garden scenes ahh. That visual and auditory aesthetic is slowly becoming my comfort place.

Song of the Lost Girl 

There are NO WORDS ENOUGH to tell how much I’m in LOVE with Kara’s and Alice’s music. Like oh my GOD the cello, the synthetiser, the piano, the authenticity and passion of the beautiful melodies. Their tragedy fills my veins, I feel their souls crying for help through the cello solos, I’m literally /this/ close to breaking down and sobbing.

Can We Still Trust Our Machines

OH MY GOD this one. With the chorus in the background, and the passionate strings section, one has no choice but to tear up before this ethereal music. Like I had said, I totally adore the usage of chorus in Markus’ music. I also love alllllll the music that comes forward during his revolution path, it pumps me up so much like YES KING. TAKE YOUR REVENGE ON ME AND MY PEOPLE <3 KILL US PLEASE <3

Now

I also have to yell about this one because Predator!Connor is SOOOO *swoons* GOD I love his chase scenes and how the music always has you on your toes. And when the melody progresses at 01.22 it’s just pure ecstasy, I ADORE how mechanical and on beat the whole thing is, he’s just a lifeless rabid dog chasing after his prey and the music is so SHJANCS.

The Hostage

I fell into the Connor hole again, I CAN’T HELP IT. I /love/ how the game slaps you across the face with this gorgeous introductory chapter and an even more gorgeous soundtrack. I adore how the music starts picking up with every evidence you lick collect and it becomes more and more intense with every variation, I’m so JKDKSDN so normal about it all. Like the cellos that start making themselves heard at 01.40 have my goddamn heart, and the electronic keyboard thing that enters at 02.24 is so SO BEAUTIFUL LIKE ??? BOY you’re not even alive. you don’t have the right to make me fall in love with your goddamn theme ??? how does that work ??? 

So yeah~ I must say that I still have lots of undiscovered stuff in D:BH such as undiscovered paths or the unreleased OSTs + the other theme superpositions, but for now the list is roughly like this ✨

I want to give Albert and Barok a daughter.

Albert is still the bio dad BUT Society thinks that Barok is her bio dad.

Her name is Lucelle Van Zieks. She was born 1912. 

She had no children. She was happy being an aunt.

I don't know who yet but I want someone to be related to Albert Harebrayne.

Anyways Albert and Barok are "two bachelors living together in the Van Zieks manor with Mr. Harebrayne's [bastard] child"

They are husbands no matter if they are technically married or not.

(To be truthful I am leaning towards either the Skyes because that is fun or the Blackquills because science lady AND I have seen someone headcanon Simon is related to Van Zieks sooo technically he is 😁)

I went with Blackquill. It just seemed much more fun

Huisje, Boompje, Studentje.

Bij de geboorte van onze eerste zoon hebben we de placenta mee naar huis genomen en deze voor een tijdje in de diepvries gestoken. Mijn vader had een beukenootje in een bloempot gestoken en tegen dat die iets wat een boompje was hebben we deze gepland in de tuin met de placenta eronder. Intussen was Robbe al drie en hadden we meermaals bij het zoeken naar frietjes in de diepvries het potje met de placenta tegengekomen. We maakten er die dag een klein feestje van en de kleine mocht zelf mee zijn boom planten. Toch kwam het niet helemaal goed want enkele jaren later werd het boompje overreden door het grasmachien. Mijn vader was de dader. Voor onze dochter kozen we maar voor een boom, die al wat steviger was zodat we het verdriet van een opgereden boom geen 2 keer moesten meemaken. Het werden 4 platanen in een vierkant geplaatst. Toen onze eerste gaststudent kwam vonden we het een mooi gebaar om hem ook een boom te geven. We hadden weliswaar geen placenta meer maar zo zou hij bij zijn vertrek toch nog wat bij ons blijven en is er altijd een reden om terug te komen. Mati koos een boompje met mooie roze bloemen in het voorjaar en we kochten maar ook een nieuwe boom voor Robbe want die opgereden boom van toen was nog niet vervangen. Later tijdens dat uitwisselingsjaar van Mati was er een feestje in onze tuin en Mati had wat teveel Belgisch bier gedronken en werd wat melancholisch. Hij ging zijn boom knuffelen en samen met zijn Belgische broer gingen ze ook samen hun bomen ‘water’ geven. Het jaar erop kozen Seba en Alice een seringenboom Ieders in een andere kleur.  Ze hopen dat we over een paar jaar de bloemen kunnen afknippen en in huis kunnen zetten.De tradie was gestart dus ook Seba is tegen zijn boom gaan plassen. Alice zag dat zo niet zitten om te doen😉 Toch kan het soms raar gaan,die winter was Mati in Paraguay zeer ziek. Hij had Dengue en moest naar het ziekenhuis. Enkele dagen konden we hem niet bereiken en waren zeer ongerust. Gelukkig kregen E uiteindelijk bericht dat hij beter was en terug naar huis mocht. Maar wat stelden we bij het begin van die lente vast? Zijn boom bloeide niet. Mati had overleefd maar zijn boom niet. Vorige lente hebben we een nieuwe gepland samen met een appelboom voor de volgende student Manuel. Hij drinkt heel graag appelsap en hoopt over een paar jaar een sap te drinken van zijn boom. En vandaag was het weer zover. Montse en ook Lexy zijn een boom gaan kiezen: een appelboom voor Montse en een kersenboom voor Lexy.

Kat Barker (Joey's fellow human exchange student and roommate who was also kidnapped and sent to the Devildom. Her backstory and arc follow a path very close to the canon Obey Me! MC, with Kat taking up a more familial relationship with the brothers rather than romantically pursuing any of them.)

Tabitha (An Angel exchange student who came to RAD with Simeon and Luke. She was Luke's mentor and caretaker before he worked for Michael.)

Ghost of Tsushima

Annabelle 'Emi' Nishimura (A woman from modern America who gets possessed by a literal ghost from the time/setting of Ghost of Tsushima, said ghost sending her back into the past by night while she lives her life in the present by day. She takes on the name Emi to better blend in, but is still obviously an outsider and is eventually taken into custody to ensure she isn't a threat. Jin Sakai is tasked with being her minder. Eventually the two form a bond, and develop an affection for one another, and after some difficulties and political maneuvering, the two of them eventually marry. But then the events of the game happen and everything kind of goes to shit and also the literal ghost is still around and it's on a mission.)

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

Alice Van Zieks/Alice Rask (A young woman from America who befriended/was befriended by and married Lord Barok van Zieks. Their marriage was alright in the beginning, but began to suffer difficulties and resulted in their separation, leading Alice to join her parents who had moved to Tokyo after her father accepted a professorship there. She becomes very close with the Mikotobas, and in particular Kazuma Asogi. At the time canon starts, she decided that is best that in order to pursue a new path, she must divorce her husband. But Barok is reluctant to accept it, hence leading her to return to Britain to try to hash things out/try to come to an understanding.)

Persona 5

Mary Shaw (An American Exchange Student attending the same High School as Goro Akechi (and who has an online friendship with Futaba Sakura). She is eventually invited to join a junior detective league organized by Akechi, but then she eventually discovers the Metaverse and evidence to suggest things are not as she was initially led to believe. She and Akechi become briefly but intensely romantically entangled, until she discovers he's been manipulating her, both in terms of their relationship and their work together, leading to a painful break up and then a falling out between the two of them. Mary eventually joins the Phantom Thieves with the help of Futaba, and awakens to her persona, Jeanne (Joan of Arc). Please be advised that Mary's story involves themes of a toxic/abusive relationship (her relationship with Akechi) - particularly emotional abuse and gaslighting.)

Fire Emblem

Meri (Awakening - A Manakete mage whose been disguised as a human and working as an apothecary/pharmacist before she is discovered and inducted into the Shepherds by Chrom. An outburst by her at the death of Emmeryn and the reveal that she is of the Divine Dragon tribe lead to people in Ylisse revering her as a Demigoddess and Agent of Naga, much to her disgruntlement. However, she eventually accepts the role, using it to try and restore the spirits and morale of the Ylissean people. Her canon S-Support for fic writing purposes is Chrom, making Lucina her daughter. She also has a yet to be fleshed out fankid associated with her.)

Gianna (Fates - A mage and scholar from Nestra. She belongs to the Nestran Order of Scholars which devotes itself to gathering and sharing knowledge, as well as recording historical events (they are eventually an order of Librarian Monks and Nuns, except they're not required to take a vow of celibacy, but may do so if they wish). She joins Corrin's army to help better shield civilians and neutral parties from being harmed by the Nohr-Hoshido war, as well as to record events as they unfold. Due to there being multiple routes in Fates, who she's romantically involved with varies.)

Euphemia von Lehr (Three Houses - The surviving daughter of Baron Lehr. Originally, Euphemia had an older sister named Irene and a fraternal twin brother, Myron, but they both passed away when she was ten 'due to a terrible illness' an illness that also left her more frail, more prone to illness and injury. In truth, all three children were secretly experimented on by Those Who Slither in the Dark, and only Euphemia survived the ordeal. The experiments, in addition to leaving her in a weakened state, gave her a major crest of Riegan which was discovered not long after. As her crest supposedly meant there was a familial tied between House Lehr and House Riegan, for a time Duke Oswald von Riegan took her in and declared her his heir. Sometime later however, his grandson Khalid came into the picture, and the question of who would be heir came into question. Oswald resolved their after observing the two by declaring the two would be betrothed and married to one another, with their wedding to be shortly after Khalid's 20th birthday. Khalid took up the alias Claude, and both he and Euphemia were enrolled in the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach. Euphemia has a Pegasus she is very close with, and canonically becomes a Pegasus Knight.)
