Remember George's outline notes that had "joy of giving" and "mercy at the gate" for Arya? Mercy is crossed out and we obviously have that as her sample chapter, so what if Arya's next alias is "Joy"? Over-thinking the significance of that phrase and how it could apply to the rest of her Braavos arc🤔

the interesting about clash within the context of arya's arc is that its the only book - so far - that ends with arya fully embracing her identity. it ends on a, relatively, high note as far as that is concerned. which i would argue makes it feel a lot different from the rest.

in game her last chapter features ned's execution and arya's life is torn apart. her identity and future are both thrown into doubt.

in storm arya is left reeling from the aftermath of trw and she is flung further off course than ever when she sets sail for braavos

in feast she is blinded

in dance her last words are "no one" as she prepares to receive a new face

but clash is different. it breaks the pattern. which is why ive always felt it represents arya's greater arc on a smaller scale. when it opens arya is using her first true alias. over the course of the book she struggles until arya is doubting who she is and where she belongs. its at that point that the old gods intervene. they remind arya; her identity and her place ("arya of winterfell, daughter of the north") and of what matters most to her ("the pack survives") arya hears wolves howling from outside harrenhal again and again and again as these last few moments play out in clash.

arya grabs a hold of it with everything she's got. she smashes the broomstick over her knee. she gathers her boys. she steals supplies. she cuts thru the guard standing in her way. she gets her hands bloody. she is resolved to return to her life as arya.

i ALSO think arya's twow arc will mirror clash in terms of storytelling more than any of the other books so far. arya's clash arc is split into two equal sections: 5 chapters in the wartorn countryside and 5 chapters as a "servant" (pow) in harrenhal for a total of 10. twow will reverse this with x number of chapters as a "servant" in braavos to start and x number of chapters back in westeros @ war to finish. the ratio might be different but i think she will have a similar number of chapters in total.

when clash opens arya is forced into the identity of arry. yoren has done this to try and protect her from arrest and assault.

Afterward he told her that from there to Winterfell she'd be Arry the orphan boy. [...] "This lot, half o' them would turn you over to the queen quick as spit for a pardon and maybe a few silvers. The other half'd do the same, only they'd rape you first." (ACOK)

and we have arya's opening twow chapter

Mercy, I’m Mercy, and tonight I’ll be raped and murdered. Her true name was Mercedene, but Mercy was all anyone ever called her… (TWOW)

arya is once again using an alias and one of her first thoughts is that she will be raped and murdered. but arya is no longer the one in danger here. at least not from that.

arya's early clash chapters also introduce some key components that have already become relevant as of her first twow chapter. lommy greenhands, arya's traveling companion, is ruthlessly murdered by raff the sweetling which is echoed in mercy. arya makes raff beg for mercy. despite what was supposed to be 5 years of indoctrination she hasn't forgotten anything.

jaqen h'ghar is also introduced in arya's early clash storyline. jaqen is an incredibly mysterious character. when he first speaks arya is instantly reminded of syrio forel, her braavosi mentor. jaqen is a faceless men, but this is never directly stated in the text. his fake persona claims to be from lorath - the free city nearest to braavos. where this man was born will never be known but the assassin is a braavosi figure at his core just like syrio. which is reinforced when he sends arya in that direction as they part.

"You don't know what's out there, Arry. I heard wolves before." Yoren wouldn't like it if she fought with him. She tried to look afraid. "Wolves? For true?" (ACOK) Mercy looked down at her feet, so shy. “Izembaro said to please the lords,” she whispered. “If there is anything you want, anything at all…" (TWOW)

in clash we see arya have to start acting. she is in a dangerous situation on the road. she has to conceal her true identity. in mercy its official as arya trains with the mummers. she is playing a role within a role. her acting skills has improved, but arya does still show thru the mask.

I won't cry, she thought, I won't do that. I'm a Stark of Winterfell, our sigil is the direwolf, direwolves don't cry. (ACOK) “I would like to see a dragon,” Mercy said wistfully. “Why does the envoy have a chicken on his chest?” Daena howled. “Mercy, don’t you know anything? It’s his siggle. In the Sunset Kingdoms all the lords have siggles." (TWOW)

part of the routine is that arya is foolish and braavosi born. she pretends not to know what sigils are with mercy's friend daena despite arya's own sigil being the direwolf.

the biggest role arya takes on in clash is that of a servant. her secret girlhood is "taken" like everything else when her and the boys are captured. arya then becomes weasel - a serving girl. servitude is a major component at this point in her storyline as it has become again in braavos. both ask the same question: can arya forget who she is and submit to this?

the answer is no. arya reaches this conclusion in harrenhal as she prays before the heart tree. she remembers who she is and finds a way out of the situation that was causing her identity crisis. the situation in the hob&w is very similar. arya will remember herself and get out.

the firstborn daughter of a second born targaryen prince and a future ruling lady of stonehelm, aelora bore the name of her mother’s house and the responsibility of being her heir. growing up in the stormlands, lulled to sleep by the battering of autumn storms against stone walls, aelora was a baby that could be described as stoic. she hardly cried, hardly laughed — just seemed to watch the room, observing those around her as if she had an understanding beyond her few moons’ worth of life. 

her mother and father divorced when she was five, still young enough yet that it did not affect her as one might expect. she missed her father when he was at summerhall, to be sure — but he visited frequently enough that she never truly felt the absence of him in her life. any feelings of missing out only dissipated further when her mother remarried 7 years ago. even so, as she grew older, she spent so little time inside of stonehelm’s keep that there was not time to long for a unified family. she was more often found along the banks of the river slayne despite the warnings of whirlpools and rapids, lugging her favourite books with her. she would often stow them away in a leather sack in a hollowed out tree simply so that others could not read them, could not soil their pages with fingerprints or accidental stains. 

aelora has always been particular. she likes things just so, and will not settle for anything less than her way. she is selfish in a quiet way, one that presents to those that do not know her well as an air of superiority or grandiosity. where most would get a disdainful look and a thick layer of silence, her siblings know the brunt of her commanding nature, a childhood staunchness that she has never grown out of. 

she has always been a lover of the outdoors, despite having inherently indoor, solitary hobbies such as reading and needlepoint. most of her years at stonehelm were spent barefoot despite warning of sharp, mountainous rocks, swimming in the rarely discovered calm bends in the river the castle sat at the mouth of, or picking herbs from the nearby forest to dry on her windowsill. upon making her move to king’s landing to serve as reila targaryen’s lady in waiting just over a year ago, the urban environment was a culture shock for the ages.

the word misery was among the very few that could describe her first few moons in the southern capital. despite the blood shared between she and the targaryens, they had never been her family — her family was back in stonehelm and at summerhall, the people that she had never clung to hard enough when she had the chance. she grew up very much removed from house targaryen, lucerys not wishing for his children to be around any of the dragons save his nieces and nephews. to aelora, king’s landing seemed worlds away. it was something she merely read about in the plethora of history books kept in stonehelm’s library until she arrived there, having begged for the chance to go only to regret it. 

time has passed, and aelora has found routine in her new home. when she is not fulfilling her duty to reila, she spends the majority of her time in the red keep’s impressive sept — the faith of the seven being the one thing in king’s landing that is reminiscent of her home. she still manages to read almost constantly, except now her tomes and novels of choice are stowed away under the bed in her chambers, alongside an impressively large collection of sea glass, rocks and dried herbs that she has picked up on the shores of blackwater bay or from merchants in the streets of king’s landing. 

it is her easy relationship with the princess and fellow lady in waiting (and now the arrival of rhaelle) that keeps her in her position in the capital. she values their friendship and makes that fact known to them despite her generally severe reputation around the red keep. she often gives her found treasures as gifts to both reila and gwen, and has been needlepointing things for the baby since reila’s pregnancy was known to her.

Imagine being this obsessed and bitter. Having read the history of the kind of characters GRRM writes... I can't imagine him being as dumb & simplistic as these haters.

Arya's narrative is more than some petty ass love story or beauty competition. But cateyhightowaaa reduces her own fave to those cliches and you wonder why most people think their distorted version of Sansa is so mid.

GRRM writes about a lot of different tomboy/unconventional female characters who grow up, embrace who they are, fall in love, gain or loss power and were all forced to confront whatever situation the world threw at them. Arya will end the story as old or possibly older than Lyanna Stark so a lot can happen in the coming years/books. If you think Arya will remain stagnant, experience no growth in the opinions she held at 9 or 10 years old - you're completely out of touch and clownish.

Lyanna was the Helen of Troy type, despite being a sword wielding, outspoken, rule-breaking tomboy.

"The crowning of the Stark girl, who was by all reports a wild and boyish young thing with none of the Princess Elia's delicate beauty, could only have been meant to win the allegiance of Winterfell to Prince Rhaegar's cause".

One of her rivals, the conventionally beautiful Cersei (who used to dress up as a boy when she was a young & envied the privilege being male gave others) the same Cersei who drew pictures of herself & Rhaegar riding a dragon only for him to run away with the boyish fierce unladylike Stark girl. Poetic.

The same Arya from book 1 wouldn't care about being graceful and understanding the power of a sweet smile. Yet there she is Mercy, revelling in her own growth. So far, Arya has had only 1 positive female figure in her life (besides the females she idolised in the songs & and stories) and that was Lady Ravella born from House Swann. She washed and put Arya in a dress, told her she was pretty and to always be brave. In TWOW, I think she'll get another positive female figure in the Black Pearl courtesan, a targaryen descendant - the most famous courtesan who seems to feature a lot in Arya's current Braavos chapters. In Mercy, Arya transforms into one of those pretty giggling girls. Which again… is not something old Arya would ever waste her time with.

Arya's story doesn't revolve around Sansa despite how much her haters want it to be. But they're threatened by Arya's potential. Imagine this lonely little girl across the narrow sea has absolutely no idea she is "Lady of Winterfell" and that Northmen are marching to war to save "Ned Stark's precious little girl."

Jon Snow freeing 4,000 wildlings to save "Arya Stark". He even sends a King Beyond the Wall to steal Arya for him. GRRM even has Mance take on the alias of "Abel" an anagram of "Bael" the Bard to do the deed.

Why can't haters stay in their own very limited lane? Your bitterness has you seething, knowing Arya is GRRM's favourite female character and will play a key role in the story ahead.

Stay mad. We get why.

HISTORY

harrion is the firstborn child of king tylon and queen melina stark, born in the middle of one of the worst snowstorms the north had seen in many years. his parents saw this as an omen that their heir possessed the strength of the north itself. they doted upon harry and brought the best teachers they could find to winterfell to educate him on history, ruling, sword fighting, and everything that a future king would need to learn. they were also very protective of him. even after harrion’s younger brother was born, meaning the starks had both an heir and a spare, the king and queen remained protective over harry. the stories write of the princess locked in a tower, but harrion was certainly a prince trapped within a tower.

growing up, harry felt the weight of the expectations that not only his parents but seemingly everyone placed on him. he was the future of both house stark and the north, the heir to the crown. while his siblings were granted more freedom and, some would argue, the chance to actually be children, harry was expected to be the perfect prince. the pressure would have been crushing to anyone.

he found one source of joy in his sword fighting lessons. harry proved himself to be a master with a sword, combining a westeros style of fighting with the braavos water dancing style - similar to his ancestor, arya stark. he also loves horseback riding and hawking.

the cracks began to show slowly. harrion began skipping lessons and sneaking out of winterfell, and then he began arguing with his parents. the wildness that had always existed in his blood had finally broken free after years of being restrained. it led to a large amount of tension between harry and his parents. suddenly their dutiful son was gone, and with every day he was become wilder and wilder. 

some say that this change was prompted by the emergence of harry’s warging ability. he had found a direwolf when out riding one day and ended up bringing the pup home. his wolf dreams began shortly after.

the fragile peace finally broke when his father brought home ravella blackwood and declared that one day she would be harry’s future wife. while he had always known that his future marriage would likely be arranged, harry had thought his father would at least let him have some say in the matter rather than bringing a stranger to winterfell and declaring her the future queen. it didn’t matter that they wouldn’t marry for a few years. to harry, this was simply another part of his life that he was supposed to submit to without argument. he was tired. he was frustrated. he was nineteen years old and had never been able to make a single, meaningful choice for himself. barely a fortnight after the announcement was made, harry left winterfell in the middle of the night, leaving only a note that he was going to travel the realm and that he would return when he was ready.

harry adopted an alias, hal, during his travels to avoid being found. for the first time in his life he ventured beyond the northern kingdom’s borders and explored the rest of the realm. in the back of his mind, he knew he would have to return to winterfell - it was his duty - but for quite some time he wasn’t ready. for a little while he wanted to live a normal life, a life where he wasn’t crushed by the expectations of others. months stretched into years. harry did make sure to keep in contact with his family so they knew he was safe and alive, but he refused their requests for him to return. 

no one really knows why harry ended up returning, and he doesn’t speak of it. some say that when the king fell ill and briefly feared he may be dying, he sent one of his old friends to find harry. other say the prince finally grew up. in truth, it was a combination of many factors, but most of all it was the call of the north. after so long of feeling a pull away from the north, it was finally calling him home. his gaze turned back toward winterfell, and he felt it in his heart, in his soul, that it was time to go home. 

so the prodigal son returns and what a glorious return it is. the king welcomes harry back with open arms, delighted to have his son and heir home at last. however, harry’s relationship with his mother is never the same. it greatly upsets him; even though his mother always had high almost unyielding expectations of him she was still his mother and he still loved her, but harrion understood that it was one of the consequences of his actions so he bears it the best he can.

there is a noticeable change in harrion upon his return. he left winterfell a boy and returned a prince ready to rule. he approaches his duties with a newfound fervor and dedication. during his travels, harry had spent a large amount of time living alongside the common people. he saw firsthand how they were affected by their ruling lord’s decisions. his father had always told him that the people were the heart of the kingdom, and harry was able to see it with his own eyes. he wants to be the best king for his people. it’s why he supports the peace treaty; war is never good for the people.

harry feels awkward around ravella when he returns. he wouldn’t blame her if she hated him and wanted to call of the marriage; he had slighted her by leaving almost immediately after their betrothal was announced. however, the marriage goes through, and harrion has been committed to being a good husband. over tiem their relationship has strengthened, developing into a true partnership.

while his wild nature has never full disappeared, harry is able to better balance who he is in his heart, who he has to be, and who people expect him to be. sometimes he still feels the call of the wild, but it’s never more than a passing thought. he belongs in winterfell. he knows that now without any doubt.

WANTED CONNECTIONS

BEST FRIEND —  someone who grew up in winterfell alongside the starks and one of the few people harry trusts completely, his closest confidant. would be loyal to the starks (though i’d be open to them possibly turning against the starks for some reason for the angst!)   -   HUGO MORMONT.

PEOPLE MET DURING HIS TRAVELS  —  harry was traveling for a few years so he definitely met quite a few people. some might only know him as hal since he was mainly using an alias during that time but he would have told his name to a few people, likely other nobles.

FIRST LOVE  —  he met her when was traveling and ended up staying with her family for a long time. he never revealed his true identity to her. she would have been from a minor house and/or a house with a poor relationship with house stark, making her an unfit match for the future king of the north, but harry did love her. there was a time he thought about bringing her back to winterfell with him or simply marrying her in secret, but his duty as prince kept him from doing so. in the end, he left with little warning or explanation. they haven’t seen each other since   -   AIYLA FREY.

BROKEN BETROTHAL(S)  —  as the crown prince, harry was a very eligible match. there was probably at least one betrothal that was proposed and even agreed upon before the king decided to betroth harry to ravella. whether they got along or not and how she felt about the betrothal being ended is totally open!

Since, she has remained in Dorne, warming once again the cooled relation between herself and his wife, until between the three of them there is as powerful and passionate a relation as never seen in Westeros.

This quote is often used as foreshadowing for Arya dying in the upcoming books, but it seems to be early foreshadowing for what Arya is currently doing in Braavos with Needle: continuing to train and gain abilities while holding onto Needle/her identity. 

That quote is from a scene between Arya and Jon that establishes not only their strong bond, but the restrictions and exclusions their culture places on them. They’re both excluded from the training yard -- Arya due to her gender and Jon due to his bastardy -- and are forced to watch from a distance. While Jon is allowed to engage in weapons training when the princes aren’t there, Arya is being forced into activities she’s not only disinterested in, but is bullied for lacking skill in. One of those activities is needlework.

During that scene, Jon notes that since she’s a small and skinny child, she wouldn’t be able to lift a longsword, let alone swing one. So not only is Arya excluded based on her culture’s values, but, unlike Brienne, her petite frame isn’t suited for the type of combat warriors in their society are expected to train for. In that way, Arya doesn’t really fit in either group. So any weapons she used would need to be tailored to fit her. And that’s what happens in a later chapter with Jon presenting Arya with a sword he had made specifically for her to suit her capabilities that also happens to be the type of “needle” that suits her interests and skill set. 

Having Jon first say that Arya will be found with a needle locked in her fingers and then follow that up by giving her a sword that he has named Needle has to be intentional. He literally gives her the “needle” that will be “locked tight between [her] frozen fingers”. Arya’s combat training is consistently referred to as “needlework” even when she doesn’t have Needle, so she is technically sewing through her journey. In AFFC, when she’s given the ultimatum of leaving the HOBAW or giving up her identity, she disposes of the items that belonged to her other alias’ but kept Needle, the symbol of her family and true identity, close but hidden.

As of the last chapter of ADWD, winter has finally come and she’s still clinging tight to her identity and keeping up with her with her needlework by executing one of the criminals on her list. So if that quote was meant to be foreshadowing rather than just a throwaway line, Arya will continue in her training while maintaining her identity and emerge in A Dream of Spring, much like Persephone rising from the underworld.

Aurane Mares, also called the Marcaderiva Bastard, is a mercenary. He is the bastard half brother of Lord Monford Velaryon.

Aurane is described as a thin man, with a sharp face, long hair between gold and silver, and gray-green eyes, with a slit in the chin. His appearance is reminiscent of that of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen according to Cersei Lannister.

Aurane, as a member of the Velaryon House, fought for Stannis Baratheon as a mercenary during the War of the Five Kings. After the Battle of the Blackwater, Aurane was captured and knelt before King Joffrey.

He was pardoned for his crime and earned Cersei Lannister's favor. Cersei granted her the position of Grand Admiral in the Privy Council of King Tommen I. She requested funds from the queen to build a small fleet of dromones, to which she agreed, opting to stop paying the debt to the Iron Bank of Braavos, in addition to allowing you to choose the captains of the dromones.

Queen Cersei granted him the title of Lord, thinking of handing him a settlement like Rosby. Aurane set sail with the newly completed dromones to the Siege of Dragonstone, his ship being the first to return with news of victory and high costs. He remained on the Council and, after the capture of Queen Margaery by the new Supreme Septon, advised Cersei that all the dromons go out to the Blackwater as a token of power to appease the population should there be a revolt for the arrest of the Queen. . After Cersei's arrest, Aurane hoisted sails, removed the oars and fled with his new dromones. Grand Master Pycelle ventures that Aurane's destiny will be the Stone Steps, where she could become a pirate.

According to Valena Toland, a new pirate king calling himself the Lord of the Seas has seized the Stone Steps with three warships. It is likely that it is Aurane Mares, as he oversaw the creation of new ships from King Tommen Baratheon's fleet and, after the arrest of Queen Cersei Lannister, fled with several ships from the capital. Also, Aurane's description matches that Valena gives of the pirate. If he were indeed Aurane, his new alias would be a play on words between his bastard surname and the Velaryons' traditional title, "Lord of the Tides".

born on the arbor, heir to westeros’s finest wines and its largest fleet at 1200 ships, mace redwyne has never been denied a thing in his life. house redwyne, notoriously rich and even more well-known for their indulgent nonchalance has called the arbor home longer than it has been considered a part of the reach. mace grew up lazing in the sun, eating peaches the size of his head and adeptly dodging lessons concerning lordship and sword skills with little consequence.

lord robett redwyne raised his only legitimate son with leniency, a light hand — the same way he raised his scores of bastards, a garden’s worth of flowers that his wife was willing to turn a blind eye to. mace only had positive memories of his father, him organizing games amongst his children, mace growing up alongside his half siblings but never forgetting that he was a notch above the rest, that at the end of the night he slept in a down-filled cloud while they tossed and turned on thin mattresses of straw. 

the first hardship mace encountered, already ten and four years into his life, was his mother’s death. though mace was made to share his father with many others, his mother was his own. even when his two younger sisters were born, a few years apart, mace monopolized delena, demanding her attention as often as he could. her death was a blow to him, a crack in the idyllic snow globe he’d been living in all his life. as the reality of life’s cruelties began to seep in, he was resolved in finding a new escape.

as he grew older, mace selected his own calling in life (undisputed), setting out to sail over the southern seas, around dorne, and across the narrow sea to essos — in search of fruit that could produce wine greater than anything any person in westeros had ever tasted. he sailed around dorne and across the narrow sea to spend years in essos, travelling between braavos, pentos, qohor, and the in betweens. and as time ticked by, he remained empty handed, but never did he fret — for his lordship in the arbor was always waiting for him. 

but the lordship snuck up on him, for by the time that word reached him in essos of his father’s illness, robett had already passed. mace returned to the arbor a grown man, tattooed and with his 5 year old son hiding behind his leg. although quentyn is his only son and mace remains unwed, he selfishly sees no point in legitimizing him — he treats him as his father treated his half siblings, allowing him to live in the arbor with him. 

mace is not well suited to be ruling lord. he’s often away, leaving his sisters in the care of themselves — though he’s appointed knights (his half brothers, coincidentally) to watch over them whilst he’s travelling. he wields the power of the redwyne fleet with an iron fist, with warships guarding the redwyne straits despite the 200 years of peace. in reality, the ships are a warning shot, a display of his family’s wealth and prowess. every decision made may as well be done by the flip of a coin, for his attention span is short and unforgiving.

he is deeply selfish and egocentric, thinking of every situation in relation to himself rather than others, entering every room with the expectation that all eyes will be on him, and a plan to escape should they try to wrest from him his familial power. that said, though he’s now practiced in the various fighting styles of essos, he is lacking from his consistent avoidance of practice growing up. as of now, his ego has only served him positively, but with change on the horizon in westeros, what the future holds is a mystery.

daenerys was born the youngest child of king aerys ii targaryen and his sister-wife, queen rhaella. she had two older brothers: rhaegar and viserys. dany was born during a storm that managed to sink the remaining targaryen fleet, hence her alias of stormborn. her mother died giving birth to her. when robert baratheon claimed the iron throne, she was smuggled away with viserys to live in the free city of braavos. they eventually left braavos and visited all the free cities. they were forced to sell everything they had to survive, including their mother’s crown. her brother became increasingly bitter and cruel, often abusing dany.

a marriage was arranged between dany and khal drogo of the dothraki. upon marrying him, she became a khaleesi. one of her wedding presents had been three dragon eggs, which eventually hatched. they were named viserion (after her brother viserys), rhaegal (after her brother rhaegar), and drogon (after drogo). after drogo’s death, dany continued her quest to take back the iron throne, believing it was her birthright.

my writing of daenerys is a mixture of the books and the show, but i tend to take more from the books.

i don’t agree with the direction the final season took with dany, so she doesn’t remember succumbing to the “targaryen madness” and destroying king’s landing. season 8, we don’t know you. her last memory is of fleeing from meereen on drogon’s back after the attack by the insurgency group, the sons of the harpy. she thinks somehow she ended up here.

her dragons are her children, and she loves them tremendously. she is dismayed to find that drogon is missing here in sydney.

suffers from paranoia due to her repeated assassination attempts. since she’s in a strange, new place, she’s always a little over cautious.

she’s never felt like she had a real home, and she’s hoping that she can settle here and be comfortable and safe enough to establish one.

dany loves the sea and spends as much of her free time at the beach as possible.

BLAH 104 | The Iron Bank and Communist Revolution in Westeros, with Steven Attewell

One of our beloved Patreons, going by the awe-inspiring alias of ABCD1234 (sorry, I can't let a name like that stand without at least some sniping ;)) asked me a question about the financing of the Iron Bank and Marxist thought as an inspiration for narrative analysis. Neither of these is my field of expertise, so I happily obliged.

Just kidding! Of course I got reinforcements. I asked known expert on the topic Steven Attewell to help me out in answering the questions, and then some. We discuss socialism and communism, in theory as well as in practicality, and how they help us understand Westeros and Essos. Or, more likely, fail to do so. 

But the real meat of the episode is with the question of what constitutes the economic and political might of Braavos, and why they are financing wars like Stannis'. What do they gain? And what has Stannis in common with Obama? So many questions, so many answers!
