"The Charge of the Light Brigade" recounts a disastrous military operation that occurred during the war between Britain and Russia in Crimea, specifically at the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854. The Light Brigade, a British cavalry unit, was instructed to charge the enemy's artillery positions. Although the order was a mistake and the charge was destined to fail, the soldiers courageously engaged in the battle and many lost their lives. Tennyson's poem has since become a timeless portrayal of war's courage, sacrifice, and pointlessness.

The Art of Imitation

If only every word I chose was as hefty and vivid

as a line from Tennyson, then I could rule the world,

scale towering peaks, sail into some uncertain future,

but until then I must settle for watered-down Collins

and resort to simple observations about my writing

desk, what the flowers are doing outside my window,

and how they are not really flowers but my thoughts

fluttering away on a breeze like so many syllables of

laughter from children who age quicker than fashion.

Isn’t She Lovely? On either side the river lie. Long fields of barley and of rye. The Lady of Shallot, a recent purchase at my local United Church Sale. I saw her on the first day and thought the painting too big so I decided not to buy her.
