The second track I'm sharing today, Alfana by Attarazat Addahabia & Faradjallah, had me in stitches when I pieced its musical lineage together.

As I immersed myself in this Moroccan groove, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it sounded familiar. Then it hit me: "Tout L’Amour que J’ai Pour Toi" by Au Bonheur des Dames. (1988)

But the story doesn’t stop there. Digging deeper, I uncovered that the thread winds back even further—to none other than Beethoven’s Für Elise! From 19th-century classical elegance to 70's Moroccan funk, it’s a fascinating journey of how music transcends genres and eras.

Oh, and here’s Dalida’s take on it from 1959—another piece of the puzzle!

Small bit ab my dnd character bc why not

So I played in a campaign from this February to April, and my character was the famed (infamous) Dr. Carssus Sevitar Lysandre, an Asmodeus Tiefling Alchemist who sorted his ingredients by Color. And I don't mean like they're still individual things sorted by color. I mean ground into powder and the powder is sorted by color. I was the only member of the party not to multiclass (We had a Samurai Fighter / Elk Totem Barbarian and a Warlock / Wizard aside from the Doctor) And the funniest thing was how little anyone knew of the world.

The Barbarian, a Goliath named Barkus, was raised by hill giants and literally only interacted with civilized folk prior to the campaign by straight up killing them when they walked into his forest.

The Warlock, a human whose name escapes me (fittingly), was a former member of the cult who served as the primary antagonists of the campaign, was..... In a cult.

And Carssus, dear Carssus, had to be in an isolated lab with his two students (one who believed in his methods, one who categorically Did Fucking Not) because his experiments were prone to detonation.

This led to us not knowing some cultural things about a lot of people, and generally not being fans of Organized Society. Or divinity, for the most part, although Carssus and Barkus did end up respecting some gods by the end (i should mention, the whole thing was homebrew by our Amazing As Fuck DM who put a shitload of thought into it. No standard gods, and the only bit that was standard aside from classes were the Nine Hells and the lore therein)

Among the myriad of Cultural Ignorance that we had, we REALLY did not know shit about elves. (Elf subraces, too, were homebrew to an extent) And so early on, we were on an adventure with two Sun Elf NPCs. Afa and Alfana.

Something important to note about Sun Elves in this campaign was their extreme regard for heirlooms and ancestors, to the point where even if it appeared to just be some trinket, they would protect it with their lives.

Alfana's bow was one such Heirloom, and it broke during a dungeon when a pressurized container was forced to depressurize by the united efforts of our barbarian and me (we did not know it was pressurized, it was the most high-tech thing in the campaign. Aside from the Airships.)

Carssus, in his infinite wisdom of Not Knowing How Much It Meant, repaired it without second thought using Mending. (Keep in mind it was like, SHATTERED. No repairing it without magic.)

This led to, at the end of the Campaign, Alfana basically telling Carssus they were married.

Another fun bit was Valikera, one of three gods of time and one of two gods that Carssus had a modicum of respect for, sicced us on Varatha, another one of the three who had joined the cult as one of their Head Honchos. Now, each of us had a God who would appear to us to guide our way. Barkus had Akasha, goddess of the Frost Elves and one of the oldest Celestials (elemental gods, each of whom was responsible for one Elf Subrace) and kickass warrior lady. The Warlock had Astaroth, God of Space (who in lore was Also a demon, due to some technicalities with the formation of the Abyss). Carssus had this Time God, who promised a boon should we defeat Varatha.

The Boon was Immortality, at least in terms of aging. Carssus would never age, could not be aged by magic, and so long as he was not killed by an external cause, would never die.

And he married someone who is still Very Mortal.

I see no way that could end poorly.
