ā€œWhen I run over the frightful catalogue of my sins, I cannot believe that I am the same creature whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions of the beauty and the majesty of goodness. But it is even so; the fallen angel becomes a malignant devil. Yet even that enemy of God and man had friends and associates in his desolation; I am alone.ā€

Dimitriverse here. And I'll use it as pretext to talk about Hopes. 'In this essay I will ā˜ļø...'/j I must be one of the few - if not, the only one- (who's not on board with the anti-church propaganda |Just in case: I grew up in an atheist house| and not a Byleth hater either) who actually liked hopes because it supports and enhances houses narrative view (contrary to the common belief that it's the opposite).
Hopes shows a constant comparison between both games. And we know that this universe plays a lot with the parallels between different characters, and relationships. Both similarities and contrasts. Hopes is a contrast, seen from Shez's perspective.
It is established from the beginning that they only see the superficial positive qualities of the leaders, just like general tone presented of this game.
Tumblr media
Here I'm going to focus mostly on AM's goal and its contrast in AG.
In AM Dimitri achieves redemption and benevolence through forgiveness and acceptance. These lessons he learns from Byleth - the teacher/ the guide/ the enlightened one (the class enlightened one is mea to alude that who have more knowledge and greater understanding of something, who also aludes to the original aspect of the game. Nirvana. The JP Byleth class) in an indirect way. Byleth in turn gets it from the goddess herself but also their life lessons/experience from GM, and the people surrounding them. WC is an important and crucial stage in Byleth's development, as is the interaction they have with the diverse students they tutor.
The role of Byleth goes beyond a mundane "self-insertion" of the player. Byleth is meant to be a bridge between that goddess and humans: the path to Nirvana.
Both forgiveness and acceptance are mentioned in the game but can go unnoticed due to the level of subtlety they are mentioned, but they are core elements in Buddhism such as compassion and wisdom that serve as a path to inner peace and freedom (specially for the leaders who rule over big factions of people), and breaks the chain/cycle of suffering, anger, revenge, resentment, among others.
And that reminds me of Arval's constant words: "the cycle of this world". What does Arval mean? The cycle of this worldā€¦ said by an Agarthan "deity", whose only role in the game has been to generate constant conflicts between the inhabitants of Fodlan and beyond perhaps? so that they kill each other. I don't know Joe, something here smells weird -wink wink- (Not to mention it also emphasizes the qualities achieved through Nirvana)
It's Important to understand the importance of Forgiveness and everything involved in the act. Understanding forgiveness, as a spiritual practice, goes beyond simply letting go of resentment. It involves cultivating mindfulness and compassion towards oneself and others. Since the game has heavily references and basis from Buddhism you can grasp it from there (more than Christianity, I'm sure different faits have somewhat different or similar approach to some concepts). But need to mention the act is also applied from a physiological and neurological perspective (in case you're not much of a "fait" person like me. I still like the Buddhism take tho, from a philosophical standpointšŸ’–).
Anyway, Dimitri AM manages to learn those lessons and is not just "to learn to live for himself", which is also important, but it is only possible to achieve it through the through the acts already mentioned: forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, etc. Acts that acts that are practiced externally towards others but which are mostly an act towards oneself. Compared to Dimitri AG where the path chosen is revenge.
Misfortune always dogs the steps of one who gives way to the desire for revenge.
Does he get the answers he thinks he wanted? Yes Did it satisfy him? A Dimitri fan knows it didn't. Can Dimitri's friends help him? No, because they're in a similar situation or under similar believes, and this game displayed it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sopilers: No, they won't get anything from getting revenge and certainly doesn't help to move on. Much less Dimitri, who's mental health has only been addressed at the end of a couple of supports. Is Shez a bad person? No! but they help no one and just goes along with whatever the leader says. Is Arval/Epimenides a bad entity? This is where I think, the original concept of the game is applied, the one mentioning. There's no good or bad, only a matter of perspective. But of course, that's something arguable and extense that deserves its own analysis.
At the end of all 3 routes, the war continues (despite having finished off Thales in AG) because the cycle continues. The cycle of anger, of suffering, of revenge, of prejudice, etc. And in my opinion, I think that's beautiful (the comparison, I mean). Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

After Phil's run in with the federation workers yesterday Ive see a lot of posts about Agent 18 (the worker wearing chainmail pants) and I thought I'd give a little insight to their backstory because, though not as intricate as Fred, they are a significant character in the overall story right now:
-WB18 first appeared as a guard to escort Forever to his meeting that got him stuck in the nether
-He appeared again later after Foolish was assigned to solve the murders, this where he got his name and started sharing an office with Foolish. 18 became his unofficial partner on the case, making an evidence board and helping figure out clues.
-18 wears chain leggings because he noted that all the dead workers found were pantsless, therefore that must be the killers motive so he wears an extra pair of pants as protection.
-18 does have a very blunt attitude and talks quite rudely to most people (when first meeting Bagi, he called her Crullea de vil), but he also has a sense of humor and jokes around a lot, mostly at the expense of others
-He's actually quite cowardly and lazy. He expressed that he was terrified of being the next victim of Cellbits murders and was hiding in his office for days, refusing to go out at night. He also regularly takes naps instead of doing, you know, his job...
-18 was the worker who kidnapped Luffy originally
-He actually does say "mate" in casual conversation. Though I don't think he was mocking Phil, he was definitely being condescending
-18 does have a one sided crush on Foolish, but it's not reciprocated. Foolish describes their friendship as that of a buddy cop movie.
-He has said that's he "completely dependent" on Foolish, and has a lot of admiration for him because he genuinely believes Foolish is trying to protect the workers.
There's probably stuff I forgot or got slightly wrong, but that's a basic run down of him. He's a hard character to know because he's mostly only on Foolish streams, but an interesting character none the less.

le comte de monte cristo 2024
today i saw the new adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo and it Slaps. Hard. Pierre Niney slays the boots down in this role. yes the acting is pompous. yes the dialogues are grandiloquent and super cheesy. yes the plot has been reworked in a kinda "casa de papel" "ocean's 11" thriller way. yes some of it is ridiculous. AND it's so much FUN !!!!!!
bonus:
laurent lafitte is extremely good (as always) as was pierfrancesco favino as faria who was just the absolute best.
the scenery is gorgeous (c'est marseille bƩbƩ)
anaĆÆs demoustier be my wife challenge
bonus content cute lesbians
the only thing i'm meh about is the absolute absence of any poc in any roles even though some of the characters were def written as such by dumas (like the casting of a romanian actress for an arab role ?) / also some period-typical misogyny, orientalism and racism which was kinda expected but still was a bit much.

How do you think Dimitri's personality would differ, lacking the darker undertones if the Tragedy never happened and Lamby + Glenn are alive and well? (Also I personally hc that Lamby was ~41 in 1176 but just has really good genes about it, thoughts?)
In that scenario, Dimitri would definitely be a little more different, but I believe he would still be the kind and earnest lad we meet in the beginning of FE3H!
In my Lambert Lives AU, the Tragedy still happens, so now, not only does Dimitri still have his familiar trauma, he and his dad can now share itāœØļø
In my AU Glenn doesn't survive because I like to keep that underlying angst flavor in regards to Lambert and Rodrigueā€™s relationship -- because I can't remember where I read it but Lambert has the same feelings about death like Felix and Dimitri do ( I need to find where ) and he certainly wouldn't glorify Glenn's death like the way Rodrigue did -- and I definitely feel that would be a point of tension between the two of them ( but it's partially one sided, because it's mostly because of Lambert's guilt of being unable to save Glenn )
This also gives me a way to still kind of explore Dimitri's coping with the trauma of the Tragedy, while he certainly still has the support of his father-- the two of them are trauma bonded and became a bit dependent on one another and Lambert definitely became overprotective for a time and sheltered Dimitri no doubt ( they work through it! ) but I feel Dimitri would still have those dark, underlying thoughts of avenging the dead, thoughts he couldnt find himself able to share with Lambert, thinking he is duty bound to and it would definitely become a point of conflict between him and his father -- with Lambert not wanting Dimitri to fall down a dark path and Dimitri being unable to let go of his obligations to the dead. And with the war on them and Dimitri also still being a young adult and coming into himself -- his relationship with his father would become strained for a time because that's just what happens when you grow up in such an environment, no matter how loved one is. ( they work through it together because they know that at the end of the day, they're all they have, and their love for one another means more than whatever conflict is happening between them )
As for Lambertā€™s age in 1176, I kinda did some math and put him AT LEAST in his mid 30s early 40s when he passed! ( so you're close ! ) and I agree, he probably has great genes šŸ‘āœØļø

Look, I love Edelgard as much as the next simp, but I want more of Byleth who does not forgive Edelgard.
I wanna read about Byleth who is fire-spittingly furious that Edelgard, someone they thought they could trust, is working with the people who murdered their father. In Golden Deer, Claude has to hold them back. In Blue Lions they're just as furious with Dimitri.
I want a Byleth who wants Edelgard dead. A Byleth who is new to emotion and has no idea how to process their grief and rage, and it all boils over like a frothing volcano.
As the player we know Edelgard is also a victim of TWSITD, but for the most part Byleth doesn't.
And even better if they still care about Edelgard! Imagine the drama, the pain, the fucked up dynamics! Byleth still cares deeply about Edelgard, even while they can never forgive and even hate her. A Byleth who wants to kill Edelgard, even as it tears them apart inside to do so.

Good things: I've been invited to partake in a certain exhibit regarding a certain author since I've had the privilege of illustrating the covers for the UK edition of a certain fantasy series.
Not so good things: I've lost most of the scans for the 8 illustrations (I think I only have 3? 4?) so that means I need to figure out WHERE I stashed the originals. I know I HAVE them, so that's some comfort. But I have so many stashes. And it's been... 10+ years and two moves. On top of that, they may need retouching. Fun times!
A minor "conundrum": I finally need to decide where I would like to offer said illustrations for print. I have a society6, but it is rather dusty these days. That aside, the print quality seems pretty decent (I have not seen with my own actual eyes, but considering I've yet to hear otherwise, I'd say they go over well.) That said, if anyone has opinions/experiences on print on demand storefronts, I'd love to hear them. I'll say in advance I would prefer to not handle printing them myself. If you know, you know.
So yeah: Things! Winged horses abound, and the search for my old art begins. If you are a fan of the old Green Rider series illustrations, watch this space?
