Highlander: The Series Coming Soon to Blu-ray

Highlander: The Series is a science fantasy action-adventure television series featuring Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) of the Scottish Clan MacLeod, as the eponymous "Highlander". It was co-produced by Rysher Distribution in the United States, Gaumont Television in France, Reteitalia in Italy, RTL Plus in Germany, and Amuse Video in Japan.

An alternate sequel to the 1986 feature film Highlander, it features a storyline in which the protagonist of that film (Connor MacLeod, a member of a race of "Immortals") has not won "the Prize" sought by all Immortals, who still exist post-1985. Christopher Lambert reprised his role as Connor in the pilot episode, which introduced series protagonist Duncan MacLeod, an Immortal who was taken in by the same clan of Scottish Highlanders who had found and raised Connor generations before.

When one thinks of truly great shows with bad pilots, this always comes to mind. Along with Star Trek: The Next Generation, of course.

The only thing that works, really, is the love story. Alexandra Vandernoot is great, and has several wonderful scenes as Tessa. When she is on-screen, you believe in the story and in the heartache she feels. Tessa has some terrific dialogue.

The worse element, by far, is the villain. Not only is Richard Moll terrible in the part (overplaying it like he was in a pantomime) but there really is no characterisation. It’s just a guy who shows up and wants to kill Duncan. That’s not a real character.

And it’s also not a real story. It’s just some fight scenes strung together to fill out the hour. Terrible.

It fails to represent the series, because - once it became good - the show told some powerful stories, with complex characters.

Also, in these early episodes, the immortal characters are worried about being found out, etc. Something that was discarded as the series progressed.

Minor Nobles: Helene Baltazzi, The Baroness of Vetsera

Helene was born in 1847 in Marseille as the daughter of a Greek banker. Her younger brother is the equestrian Alexander Baltazzi.

In 1864, she married the Austrian diplomat Albin, Knight of Vetsera, who was elevated to the status of Baron 6 years later. At the time of their marriage, it is said that Helena was the richest girl in Constantinople/Istanbul. She and her husband moved to Vienna, the Austrian capital, where Helena would become a woman of the society.

Between 1865 and 1872, Helena bore four children, two boys and two girls. Her oldest daughter Marie, nicknamed Mary, would gain tragic fame by being the victim in the murder suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, that is also known as Mayerling Incident.

Helene fell from grace with the Austrian court and the aristocracy. She denied any involvement in encouraging the affair of Mary with Rudolf but instead blamed her former friend Countess Marie Louise of Larisch-Wallersee, who was also a cousin to Rudolf and niece of Empress Elisabeth.

Helene would survive her husband and all of her four children. She died impoverishedly on February 1st, 1925, in Vienna and is burried in Payersbach.

Suzanne part à la recherche de sa fille Julie, disparue huit ans plus tôt. Elle aurait 25 ans aujourd’hui. Son mari l’a abandonnée, elle a peu à peu sombrée dans l’alcool. Persuadée que sa fille est toujours vivante, elle continue à la chercher inlassablement, en dépit du jugement de son entourage qui, devant son obstination, va jusqu’à la traiter de folle. Elle n’a aucun indice qui peut lui donner un début de piste. Un jour, elle tombe par hasard sur un article qui relate une fête paysanne dans un petit village. Une photo de jeune femme illustre ce reportage. Elle croit reconnaître le pull que portait sa fille le jour de sa disparition ! Au cours de ses recherches,  elle va soulever le voile des secrets de ce village et elle découvre que tout le monde se ment….
