pairing: matt sturniolo x fem!reader summary: with your parents arguing and the volume growing increasingly loud, you text your boyfriend matt to take you on a drive to clear your mind. warnings: established relationship, use of y/n lol, parents arguing, fluff, reckless driving if u squint a/n: i was driving home one night. really sad. and wanted to stick my head out the window. and got this idea. it's litterally just a little drabble sorry it's kinda bad but i think it's cute lowkey ANYWAY ENJOY

it was times like these where i allowed my mind to wander. staring at my ceiling, led lights on their lowest setting and alex g desperately trying to make its way into my head at full volume through my earbuds. no matter how high i turned it up, nothing tuned out the sounds of screaming and clashing and banging on the other side of the wall.

the deep circles under my eyes were particularly prominent about now. no matter how hard i tried, i couldn't seem to fall asleep.

the distortion in my earbuds due to the loud volume began to annoy me and i ripped them out by the cord for some relief, but i was immediately reminded of the sound of my parents.

i quickly reached for my phone and unlocked it, going into my messages and finding matt. i began typing, attempting to get my mind away from the sound of my parents screaming.

i dropped my phone in my lap as i took a deep breath.

now for the hard part.

i carefully sat up and made my way to my closet to grab one of matt's hoodies that he had left over and pulled it over myself, keeping my pajama pants on.

i carefully slipped on some socks and checkered vans before making my way to my bedroom door.

a deep sigh escaped my lips.

gently, i pushed the door opened and tip-toed out of my room, ignoring the increasing volume of my parents shouting. i flew down the stairs and to the front door, biting my lip harshly as i slipped out and quickly shut the door behind me.

silence.

i pressed my back against the front door and slid down it, my hands covering my face as i took in a deep breath and let out a shaky breath.

all that i could hear was the soft breeze and the sound of my breathing.

the outdoors is such a peaceful place, i thought. i should come out here more often.

the sound of tires against the gravel caused me to lift my head and quickly scramble to my feet, making my way to the van in front of my home.

matt met me halfway and pulled me into a tight hug, gently resting his head on top of mine and allowing a hand to rub my upper back gently in circles.

"you okay?" he questioned softly, his voice so gentle as if i were going to crack if he spoke any louder.

"'m okay." i mumbled against his chest, gently pulling away and smiling at him reassuringly.

matt's eyes scanned my expression, and he nodded softly as he caressed my cheek and gently took me by my hand. "let's go for a ride, okay?"

nights like these were my favorite.

nights where matt gave me the aux, his hand on my thigh as we drove absolutely everywhere but at the same time, nowhere. flying down the road going heinous speeds, no set destination, matt and i simply had each other and that was what mattered to us most in these moments.

with all of the windows down and the music all the way up, i bit my lip as i smiled at matt.

a thought ran through my mind that i couldn't seem to resist.

my hand gently ran over matt's that was on my leg, taking his hand in my own and setting it to the side.

matt shot me a glance in confusion. "you okay?"

i smiled and nodded as i unbuckled my seatbelt.

"y/n-"

"don't worry," i smiled as i sat up and pressed a button, opening the sunroof and sitting up.

for the sake of matt's sanity, i gently held his hand and lifted my head out of the window, smiling as i felt the wind immediately hit my skin and my hair. my eyes felt like they desperately needed to close, but i didn't care.

most would think this is psycho, or i look stupid.

for some reason, each gust of air that brushed past me felt like a wave of relief.

about fifteen seconds went by and i sat back down in the car, smiling at matt who couldn't help but giggle at my expression.

"you feel better?" he questioned, and i nodded happily. "can i fix your hair?" he chuckled, and i nodded as my face grew warm.

matt, after pulling into a gas station and parking by a gas pump, gently reached over and took my stands between his fingers as he flattened them and fixed the stray ones. he gently ran his finger against my cheek and smiled at me, leaning forward to press a gentle kiss to my lips.

i smiled against his lips and gently squeezed his hand, our fingers tightly intertwined, before he pulled away and smiled at me.

"go get your gas, i'll be waiting here for you." i whispered.

matt nodded as he rolled the windows down and pressed one more quick peck to your cheek before opening the door and getting out.

i let out a deep breath as i looked at my fingers, smiling to myself.

matt always knew how to make me feel better. whether it be talking through emotions with me or as simple as just existing beside me, he was the best.

matt leaned into the car, his arms against the bottom of the rolled down window as he smiled at me warmly, and i turned to him.

"wanna spend the night tonight?" he questioned.

it was tempting, but i knew i needed to be home tonight. if my parents were going to be angry at me any night, it would be tonight.

"i'll go home tonight, but i would love to tomorrow if the offer still stands." i smiled.

he held out his pinkie with a soft smile, and i locked my pinkie with his.

"the offer is always standing for you, y/n."

i sighed as i undid my seatbelt.

"you gonna be okay?"

i turned to matt and nodded with a soft smile, beginning to get out of the car. matt did the same and walked with me to my doorstep, gently taking both of my hands in his once we arrived.

"call me if you need anything, or anyone to talk to.. i'll be here, okay?" he smiled.

i nodded as i let out a deep breath and leaned into matt, pulling him into a tight hug.

"thank you matt." i whispered, and matt smiled as he hugged me back tightly, hands running against my back again.

"of course, my love." he bit his lip as he pulled away and smiled at me, leaning down for one last kiss.

i hummed softly against his lips before we both pulled away.

"drive safe." i told him before opening my front door and stepping inside.

the silence was loud.

i assume my parents fell asleep.

i made my way up the stairs carefully and let out a deep sigh as i kicked off my shoes and laid against my sheets.

sometimes some loud music and company is all you need, and tonight helped me with my loud thoughts and parents. but it also helped me realize how much matt truly means to me.

i couldn't be more grateful.

Big Star - Performance Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 31, 1974

Summer re-runs ... return!

Haven’t seen this show posted around too much, which is a little surprising, given the scarcity of Big Star bootlegs out there. It captures (in pretty solid sound quality) the band playing in Cambridge, MA in the spring of 1974 – opening for Badfinger! Power pop heaven. I believe this gig took place around the same time as the officially released Big Star Live disc, and features bassist John Lightman in place of Andy Hummel. As noted in the MC’s intro, this must’ve been a bit of a bummer gig for Big Star, as the night before their van was stolen, along with all of their equipment.

But the guys make the best of it, sounding inspired and tight throughout their 45-minute set. They play some tunes from #1 Record and Radio City, but oddly (or maybe not so odd, given Alex Chilton’s later propensity for non-original material), almost half of the setlist is made up of covers. Maybe the most interesting of these is (as far as I know) the only known Big Star version of the Velvet Underground’s “Candy Says.” Remarkable that, along with his later cover of “Femme Fatale,” Chilton was so tuned into the softer side of Lou Reed’s songwriting at this point in the 70s. Most of the proto punk/punk scene focused on the other extreme of his stuff, right? But, as we all know, Chilton was way more sensitive than most! He knew good material when he heard it. Big Star’s “Candy Says” is a loose affair (“We don’t know it very well,” Alex jokes), but as with most things Chilton touched, it’s a gorgeous thing.

MY PREDICTIONS FOR ALEXANDER'S BOOK

Well HELLOOO VANHALENVILLE 👺 how are we all. Let's get directly down to business, I'm here to give a few of my predictions about the book. If you aren't aware, Alexander is releasing a BIOGRAPHY called BROTHERS on OCTOBER 22nd!

N E WAY!

I LOVEEEE A GOOD TEA SPILL, don't get me wrong, and I'm not one to avert my eyes away from a shady paragraph...BUT! As this is called 'Brothers', I really don't forsee Alexander writing a shade-fest. I of course expect veiled jabs and a bit of he-did-this-he-said-this...but I do not expect this to be messy.

I expect him to open up about how special Edward was to him, how much he misses him, and I expect him to go into hardships that they faced (fighting, disagreements, racial struggles, etc etc). I predict this book is going to stay true to the title.

I am HOPING for a few photographizations 💔‼️.

But yes, since this is called brothers, I do not see this book being a "yeah David was a bitch, I wish Samuel would stop stalking me and now I'm gonna tell you Michael Anthony's secrets" type of book !!.

If this book does contain any of that, I expect him to be direct and factual with it. I've noticed he says what's on his mind, so I dooooo expect to see his thoughts about the band's inner turmoil. But I don't forsee shade in a petty, "I always thought David's shirts were stupid" way .

That's not to say Mr. Van Halen isn't PETTY!! all of them besides Mr. Anthony and Mr. Gareth Chereroni are petty. But in this book, I don't predict that being the highlight.

Monday, July 29: David Lee Roth, "Shyboy"

Billy Sheehan wrote “Shyboy” for Talas a few years before joining David Lee Roth’s band, but as the second track on Eat ‘Em and Smile it successfully worked alongside the opening “Yankee Rose” in establishing the template and sound of Diamond Dave’s first post-Van Halen outfit.  In other words, the tune was a full-on freakout that emulated Van Halen to some extent but went way over the top in defining this group as more shred than song, since Eddie and Alex never overplayed like this.  To be sure, Ted Templeman’s production, with its perfect mix of precision and space, gave everyone room to jump out of the speakers, and no doubt this was a total barnburner on stage, especially since Dave didn’t bother attempting to sing actual verses or a chorus.  And of course Steve Vai, Gregg Bissonette and Sheehan were master players who individually and collectively came pretty close to outdoing the Van Halen brothers with their coked-out ridiculousness.  The sheer ludicrousness of “Shyboy” was arguably the platonic ideal for David Lee Roth’s solo career, though it was also clear this group could barely make to the end of the song, let alone sustain themselves for more than a couple albums.

AKA the catalyst for this playlist. a delightful mix of the vision of the losers in a hot tub at richie’s place in california and “mrs. kaspbrak let him RUN” precipitating 40-year-old roommates.

AKA canonically (in the movie) richie is from chicago and eddie is from new york so call this a love letter to those places before they wind up in california.

AKA kind of the thesis statement of all the losers. is it possible to feel safe around these people you used to know after 27 years of distance. theme song to childhood trauma!

4. Light Year - Gregory Alan Isakov - “everything was up, it’s coming down” AKA settling after derry. to be literal about it: “we all float down here”.

5. How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep - Bombay Bicycle Club - “can i wake you up, can i wake you up? is it late enough, is it late enough? there’s a story in which my eyes shut”. AKA the thought is that eddie/stan are essentially the living dead, and need reassurance that they’re alive from richie/patty.

6. Northsiders - Christian Lee Hutson - “we’re going up to mikey’s spot” / “morrissey apologists, amateur psychologists, serial monogamists, we went to different colleges” / “you said that we would always be branches on the same old tree reaching away from each other for eternity”. AKA callback to being teenagers in derry, each leaving for college. and the imagery of that last line is perfect - cursed to never remember one another, but remaining on the same tree.

7. U&ME - alt-J - “summer holiday, having fun” / “it’s just you and me now”. AKA funky free song about a drug trip on a summer day for 7 losers (+ 1 patty) getting high by the pool.

8. Lovely Day - Bill Withers - “just one look at you and i know it’s gonna be a lovely day”. AKA what it says on the box.

9. California - Phantom Planet - “california, here we come!”. AKA one of two west coast themed jason schwartzman attended bops. surely richie tozier crossed paths with jason schwartzman at some point in their individual careers.

14. West Coast - Coconut Records - “i miss you, i’m going back home to the west coast”. AKA the second of two west coast themed jason schwartzman attended bops. surely richie tozier was friends with jason schwartzman at some point in their individual careers.

Making Breakfast - Twin Peaks - “watching the garden grow, happy, happy days, got egg yolk on my bed, chinese food on the way” / “and i’m sitting in the back of a limousine, just going to a show”. AKA richie and eddie happy domesticity. they order chinese food in. they love appetizers. fried wontons and scallion pancakes.

Masterpiece - Big Thief - “years, days, makes no difference to me, babe, you look exactly the same to me” / “old friends, old mothers, dogs and brothers, there’s only so much letting go you can ask someone to do”. AKA another lovely love song that i’ve decided to repurpose for my own nefarious devices.

valerian 'val' spex (leo howard) is the grandson of the late nurse spex, who raised him after his parents - his dad: a super and his mom: a regular human who was a news reporter - both died on the job. in her opinion, there is no one better than him in all of maxville. after nurse spex passes away quite suddenly, mr and mrs timmerman offer to foster him. he accepts. val can shoot laser beams out of his eyes and he often uses it on khione and other pretty girls to get their attention. as a result, val often gets turned into an ice statue and is intimately familiar with the super powers of the other girls at school.

morpheus 'morph' hellman (d'pharaoh woon-a-tai) is the son of a regular human and jeannie elast who are now divorced. whereas his mom's mutability power primarily has to do with physical elasticity, morph's mutabilty power makes it so he can shapeshift into other people. currently, he uses his powers for kicks and little jokes here and there. some of them are actually funny. others? not so much. he has this in common with his brother, lash.

(he doesn't pull pranks on khione anymore after she froze him, learning the hard way that elasticity plus ice abilities equals getting fucked up. and not in the fun way.)

khione and morpheus befriended each other on the first day of school (freshman year for him and sophomore year for her) because of their first names and subsequent nicknames - freeze girl and carbon copy kid respectively.

morph can actually carry a tune and he's decided that if this superhero thing doesn't work out, he'll just start a band or become a super(hero) influencer instead.

he abhors the fact that his mom seems to have an actual crush on coach boomer.

tierra fernandez (paulina chávez) is also a legacy. whereas khione's family has had multiple hydrokinetics and cryokinetics in their family tree, many of the fernandez' developed geokinetic abilities. tierra is the introvert to morph's extrovert. despite this, they work rather well together and often partner up. tierra's parents are often traveling around the world and it was during one of their trips that she was born. it wasn't until the fernandez family moved to maxville that tierra had something stable. a place to plant her roots and grow.

jolene hamilton (abigail cowen) comes from a household with no super heroes. she was a late bloomer when it came to her abilities. her parents did not like it so they kicked her out. much like val spex, jolene is also being fostered by mr and mrs timmerman. in school, jolene can often be seen with her best friend, alejandro ramirez.

alejandro ramirez (froy gutierrez) comes from a household with no super heroes as well. all in all, his family took it well and so did his boyfriend, who doesn't have powers either.

karol topolski (grace van dien) is the daughter of leslie topolski, a sky high alumni and her wife francesca. karol can shapeshift too. but the catch is: she can only shapeshift into inanimate objects.

sterling ti (brandon soo hoo) is the son of patty ti and her husband. cousin to magenta lewis, sterling is also named after a color albeit in a subtler way. sterling can replicate and sprout multiple body parts from the surface of any object or living thing - including his own body - and manipulate these body parts remotely. his favorite trick is to give himself six arms.

zayden 'zay' bruber (amir mitchell-townes) is the son of alex bruber and his husband. zay has the ability to turn his saliva and other bodily fluids into acid. he can also solidify his saliva. when he's not training to become a hero, zay writes original songs. who do you think gave morph hellman the idea to start a band in the first place?

7. how long have you been a fan? tell us about your journey!

i’ve been a fan for about 12 years now! i liked some of their songs before, but i only got properly into them in 2012. i was doing an internship in cardiff at the time, and i remember going to a bar one night and ‘i bet you look good on the dancefloor’ came on and everyone lost it, and even though i kind of knew the song already, that was the moment i really went ‘oh shit this is such a tune??’

so then when i finished my internship and went back home, i was hanging out with my brother and i mentioned arctic monkeys, and he immediately was like “YEAH, they’re awesome, you need to listen to all their stuff, you’ll love it.” and then he played me ‘riot van’ and some other early stuff, and then he went “actually, you know what you’ll also love? this other band that alex turner has with a guy called miles kane called the last shadow puppets” and he showed me the video for 'standing next to me' and uuhhh, i was instantly obsessed, both with am and tlsp (and milex) 🙈 (my brother probably now regrets ever getting me into them, lol). so yeah, that was the start of a long obsession with am and tlsp!

i saw them live twice in 2013 and twice in 2014, then i saw tlsp in 2016, then i saw am again twice in 2018, and three times last year. i was more or less normal about them between 2018 and halfway through 2023 though, probably because i got swallowed up by my studies and then another fandom for a few years, but i got re-obsessed with am (and milex) biiiig time last year and finally discovered the fandom on here, and it honestly felt like coming home

Songs that I would kill to see inspire cathartic FirstPrince fanfics

(A little ramble about songs that inspired fic ideas! New Year's fast approaches and I intend to write more next year, so maybe I'll have a proper go at these sometime. But until then, I'll let these stew here. Bonus chapter spoilers [ish?])

Photograph (Cody Fry) – Specifically as the "In February 2026, a flu sweeps through Park Slope." section of the bonus chapter. Henry-centric, one of those character deep dive type things. Henry pacing the house, thinking about all the time they've spent together over the years. Henry watching Alex in that window seat, thinking about all the man has done for him. Pure tooth-rotting fluff. Almost frustratingly sweet.

You Are Enough (Sleeping at Last) – Love love love this song and I think it'd be really nice to see it as a "It's 2025, and Henry has a bad day." fic. Specifically the end of the excerpt where Henry tells Alex "You don't have to do it, you know." Alex grappling with the idea that he doesn't always have to keep giving and giving and giving.

Je te laisserai des mots (Patrick Watson) – Typical, and this is just a personal comfort song, but since Henry knows French... I always imagine a little drabble where Alex has a bad day or he's ill or he has trouble sleeping and Henry is singing softly to him to try to help him sleep. And alright, maybe Henry isn't really the best singer but he can still hold a tune well in my heart ok

Soulmate Song (Carson James Argenna) / Run Away With Me (Ben Fankhauser) – I think these two could fall under the same premise. An AU maybe? Same forbidden romance aspect as canon, obviously, but different stakes. Alex-centric; Alex would be the one asking to run away. Very Crowley in Good Omens-esque. Very sweet, a little desperate. I would love to see them actually run away together.

Grow As We Go (Ben Platt) – I think it would make a good exploration of their relationship in terms of grief and struggle. Seeing each other at their lowest and still promising to be there, still staying, still supporting in their own ways. Maybe a 5+1 or a two chapter, one of each of them dealing with their own struggles?

When Van Halen was formed in 1973 by the brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen, Heavy Metal music already existed for a few years and was already showing the musicians from that era that they could really play loud and experiment with heavy riffs and vocals. Although the American band had a sound which was more close to Hard Rock, Eddie always shared his love for Metal. When the band was still in the bar circuit they even used to cover many famous Heavy Metal groups.

During his career that lasted until his death in 2020 at the age of 65, Eddie Van Halen talked a lot about other artists. He even named who in his opinion is the father of Heavy Metal.

THE FATHER OF HEAVY METAL ACCORDING TO EDDIE VAN HALEN

The opinion that Black Sabbath was the band that created Heavy Metal is almost unanimous. The reason is that they were really the first ones to combine heaviness and lyrics that really could send shivers down the spines of listeners at the time. Eddie Van Halen’s opinion was the same, since he told Rolling Stone in 2011 that the father of Heavy Metal music was the Black Sabbath co-founder and guitarist Tony Iommi.

He mentioned the British guitarist when he was being asked about his influences. About him, Eddie said: “He was the father of heavy metal in my mind.” He was then asked if Iommi inspired him to “tune down” his guitar. The Dutch-American guitarist replied: “Well, that was more because it was easier on the singer.”

HE CONTINUED:

“And on top of that, if you listen to our first batch of records, I never tuned to anything. I never tuned to a piano or a tuning machine. So I always would just pick up my guitar and the bass player would tune to me. So we were always in the cracks (between piano keys). I’ve found that most of the things that I’ve stumbled onto were all accidents, you know?” Eddie Van Halen said.

Tony Iommi is the only member of Black Sabbath who was part of all the eras of the band. So he appeared on every record the band ever made. Known also as the “Riffmaster”, Iommi continues to be one of the most influential guitarists in the world. He curiously had to adapt his guitar playing and sound after he lost the tips of his fingers during the last day of his work in a factory in Birmingham.

HE USED TO COVER BLACK SABBATH IN THE EARLY DAYS AND WOULD EVEN SING THE SONGS

Both guitarists were really good friends, they first met each other when Van Halen was Black Sabbath’s opening act back in the late 70s. As any guitarist of that era, Iommi was really impressed by what Eddie could do with the guitar. Van Halen used to perform many Black Sabbath tracks in the bar circuit before they got their first record deal. In some occasions Eddie himself would occupy the vocals.

In 2013, Guitar World made one interview with Eddie and Tony Iommi side by side to talk about their careers. The Van Halen guitarist recalled Sabbath’s influence, saying: “We played just about every Black Sabbath song. I used to sing lead on every Black Sabbath song we did. Things like ‘Into the Void,’ ‘Paranoid,” and ‘Lord of This World,’” Eddie said.

Curiously, Eddie Van Halen almost appeared on a Black Sabbath album. Back in the 90s he was in England and went to visit Iommi in the studio while he was recording Sabbath’s 1994 album “Cross Purposes.” Eddie was invited to play a guitar solo in the song called “Evil Eye” but his part didn’t end up in the record. Iommi recalled that an interview with Rolling Stone, saying that he just couldn’t reproduce the guitar solo Van Halen composed for the track. That forced him to make a new solo so that he finish the song.

During the same conversation, Iommi praised the late Eddie saying that he kept improving his guitar skills throughout the decades. He also said that likes to think about him as an inventor. The main reason was because he always wanted to come up with something new. So reason he kept working on his own guitars and amplifiers to get the sound that he wanted.
