summary: Based off of season 4, episode 6 of DF. so all credit goes to the crew, the show, and the channel/network. It is Alex's turn to choose a location and everyone is in anticipation. And the pit stop he's chosen may or may not be something you're comfortable with.
Part one of my new series is here! I do truly hope you enjoy it and are excited about this series. I'm sorry if these get put out slower than usual, I just started school, so just bear with me.
I love you to the moon and to Saturn!

(gif not mine!)
You sat in the RV on the way to a location unknown as per usual. Though knowing it was Alexâs turn to pick the location was quite nerve-wracking. He hadnât let you in on anything, not even the slightest detail. The one thing you did know, was that he was very excited about it, and that scared you even more. Nothing about this seemed normal, and you were dying to know where he was taking you.Â
You looked at him and sighed. âAl-â you started. âNope, no, Iâm not saying a thing,â he interrupted you, knowing exactly what you were going to ask him. You huffed and crossed your arms. âYou donât even know what I was gonna say,â you said to him and it was his turn to sigh. âSeriously? Youâve asked only about 8 million times in the last 31 hours,â he scoffed. Chelsea, tanner, and Dakota chuckled. âI'm with her on this, I want a hint of some sort,â Chelsea said and looked at Alex with a raised brow. âNot until later,â Alex stuck to his plan. âYouâre no fun,â you whined and poked his arm. âIâm fun, I have a great spot for you guys to stop at while I tell everyone about the location,â he informed you and tossed an arm over your shoulder.Â
It wasnât long before you pulled up to the place and got out of the RV. âIâm small enough compared to you giants. What is this place?â you questioned and looked at your boyfriend like he was crazy. Everyone laughed and tanner ruffled your hair, you swatted his hand away. âYouâll have fun I promise,â Alex said and kissed the top of your head.Â
âOh hush, I know I will. Iâm with these two fools, and Chelsea of course,â you said and nudged her side and she laughed softly. Tanner and Dakota looked at you in mock offense. âFools?â they questioned simultaneously. âFools,â you confirmed with a large grin.Â
âOh, youâre gonna get it,â Dakota said. You noticed that he was about to run and so of course you sprinted away from him. You could hear him running after you and you laughed breathlessly. About halfway across the parking lot he caught you and picked you up and spun you around until you begged him to stop. You let out a yelp and laughed as he set you down, trying to gain your balance back. âI still think youâre a fool,â you whispered and he looked at you with a look as if saying âwhat did you say?â. âI said nothing,â you said and shrugged before quickly walking back to the group.Â
âAlright, Iâll see you guys in a bit, go have fun on big objects,â he gestured to what was in front of him and behind you. You chuckled before kissing his cheek. âLove you, Alex,â you said while watching him walk away.Â
âShall we?â you asked and pointed to the attraction. âWe shall,â Tanner answered and you chuckled before linking arms with Chelsea and making your way back across the parking lot.Â
As you walked across the lot you saw a large chair and to your surprise a mailbox. âImagine the packages you could get in there!â Chelsea said and you laughed. âFor some reason, I feel the need to climb that chair despite my crippling fear of heights,â you pointed out and directed the camera toward the chair. âIâd pay to see that,â Tanner laughed and so did you. âYou just want to see me fall off of it,â you jabbed back and he looked at you with a hurt expression. âIs that what you think?â he asked in surprise. âThatâs just what I know,â you smiled brightly at him. He grinned at you, âAlright, alright, you know me too well,â he said. âI know,â you said and they laughed.Â
You walked further in and came across a giant pencil. âLook at the pencil!â Tanner exclaimed and you chuckled. âTanner we finally found something that is taller than you!â you proclaimed excitedly. He tossed a glare your way while Chelsea and Dakota laughed. Chelsea jumped to try and touch the eraser and when she couldnât you decided to try. âOk, wait! I need to try!â you said and set your camera down. You stood under the pencil and did a couple of test hops before you jumped as high as you could. Ultimately not reaching your goal. âDamn it,â you huffed and they all shook their heads. âSorry, I guess youâre just too small,â Dakota teased you and you glared at him. âDonât worry I couldnât do it either,â Chels reminded you and wrapped an arm around your shoulder.Â
âOh my gosh, itâs a big ass bird cage!â you enthusiastically pointed at it before running toward it. âIt has a swing!â you said excitedly and sat down on the seat before swinging yourself back and forth. âShe is so easily entertained, I donât understand honestly,â Tanner shook his head. âRight, I mean, itâs just a swing,â Dakota said. âI think itâs cute,â Chelsea said as she watched you happily swing in the cage.Â
âAlright, move, we want to swing too,â Dakota said and you got off of the swing so they could sit down. Chelsea hopped on the side of it and you smiled. âThis is like, the cutest thing weâve ever done,â Dakota stated and you chuckled a bit. âNot gonna lie here, you guys do look adorable right now,â you said and smiled at them. âI need pictures!â you exclaimed before holding your phone with one hand and taking a few pictures of them. âI need a picture with everyone,â you said. They all sighed jokingly. âCâmon, you know you love me,â you joked and they all agreed.Â
Tanner sat on the swing and you hopped on behind him. You had a foot on either side of him as you held on so you wouldnât fall. You both smiled widely as Chelsea took the picture. Next up, it was you and Dakota. It was an awkward and hard-to-hold pose but you made it work. You were determined to be taller than him and so you sat on your knees on the swing right next to him. He had his arm around your waist to steady you as you rested your head atop his. Your smiles were wide as you tried not to laugh and fall off. He helped you down and next it was you and Chelsea. Seeing as you never wanted a normal pose you and Chelsea both stood on the swing. âWe better get this before we both fall off,â she joked and you laughed loudly and smiled over at her. And later on, you found that that was the picture. You smiling over at her while she smiled at the camera. It was one of your favorite pictures you had with her.Â
Dakota was the last one on the swing, and Chelsea took the opportunity to close the cage door. âIâve always just wanted to-â she spoke as she shut the door on him. And you all laughed. âHe makes a great bird,â Chelsea joked and you laughed loudly. âA beautiful bird,â you agreed teasingly.Â
âNow, to ascend the giant mailbox!â you declared and they chuckled. You all made your way up to the top and you smiled at the view from up there.Â
âWhat do you think Alex is talking about right now?â Dakota wondered aloud. âProbably the usual,â you shrugged. âYeah, probably something depressing and scary,â Tanner added and you softly laughed. âIt has to be that,â you pointed over at him and smiled. âOk, I think the adrenaline of climbing a giant mailbox has worn off. Iâm literally about to panic. Can we get down now?â you questioned and they all nodded. âRight, câmon letâs get you back onto the ground,â Tanner said and took your hand to guide you back down.
As you walked back down to the parking lot to meet up with your boyfriend you smiled at the thought of him being so excited.Â
You saw him by the RV and took off in a light sprint. He chuckled at you and opened his arms for you. You crashed into him and he huffed at the impact, laughing breathlessly as he kept you both from falling over. âHey, babe,â he said and he heard your muffled hello against his neck. You pulled back and smiled up at him. âDid you have fun?â he asked, and you nodded your head. âYeah, I did. Got lots of good pictures too,â you told him giddily and he smiled at how happy you looked. He leaned down and pressed a kiss on your forehead. âGood, Iâm glad,â he said and hugged you close again.Â
The others joined you and you smiled brightly at them, âready guys?â you asked and they all nodded before following you into the RV. You sat next to Alex on the couch and Chelsea sat down next to you. Alex tossed his arm around your shoulder to fit you snuggly against his side, and to make more room for Chelsea.Â
It was a few minutes into the journey when everyone turned their cameras back on. âAlex is in control!â Dakota exclaimed and you smiled up at him. âYou have a little pep in your step today,â Chelsea teasingly pointed out and you chuckled. âWeâre all excited. Itâs not just me,â Alex said and you laughed. âEveryoneâs excited about this,â he added and you shook your head. âWhat?â Tanner asked, âHonestly, like you couldnât actually believe that,â you joked and looked at him.Â
âLetâs do a poll. Tanner, how do you feel about Alex picking?â Dakota asked. âNot very comfortable in the slightest,â He states and you nod in agreement. âThatâs only one out of the four. Dakota?â he asked his friend. âIâm nervous as hell,â he expressed and you smiled. âAnd Chelsea?â Alex asked. âYou freak me out a little bit, man,â Chelsea answered and you chuckled. âOk, y/n?â he questioned you. âHonestly, youâre being a little too excited for me to be excited about this,â you told him, âyour excitement scares me,â you said and he chuckled.Â
âYou keep smiling like something is up,â Chelsea stated. Alex shrugged his shoulders and you rolled your eyes. âOh no,â you mumbled and he smiled down at you. âIâm just gonna break it to you guys right now. For my haunted location, we will be doing solos the entire night, with no flashlights,â he broke the news and your jaw dropped a bit. âWhat is wrong with you?â you question in exasperation. Everyone groaned in protest, âThatâs the worst idea ever,â Tanner complained.Â
âI just donât know Alex, about your decisions, your ideas,â Chelsea said to him and you chuckled. âIâm with Chelsea here, the things you do for your locations can be questionable,â you said and everyone snickered.Â
âWe are in the middle of nowhere, like, where the hell are you taking us?â Dakota queried.Â
âWe have been sitting in this RV for a very long time now, and I do have something planned for us. Right now we are on our way to an abandoned grain silo that has been renovated into a rock-climbing facility,â Alex explained his plan for you all. âHow tall is this?â Tanner asked.Â
âThe tallest one is about 65 feet,â Alex said and your eyes widened. âThis sounds pretty intimidating,â Dakota said and you nodded your head. âVery intimidating, I hate heights,â you told him and gave him a tight-lipped smile. âIâm sorry babe, but there is a competition involved. Whoever gets up the highest will win this competition and it may or may not tip the odds in your favor for the overnight,â Alex informed you. âDamn it, you know how competitive I am,â you shook your head. He squeezed you tightly and kissed your head.Â
âSo, like, whoever wins, whoever gets the highest wonât have to do a solo?â Dakota asked hopefully. âNo, no, no, no. Thatâs funny. Thatâs really funny,â Alex said and you lightly hit his chest. âThat would be a great reward for me,â Dakota spoke up again. âWhat is it?â you asked Alex. âLetâs just say, you are going to want to try and get to the top. You wanna win, trust me,â he told you. âI definitely donât trust you but ok,â you countered.
âI donât know whatâs scarier. Climbing this high in an abandoned silo, or not winning the contest,â Dakota said.Â
You put your cameras down and you sighed. You were nervous about climbing so high. You hated heights and Alex knew this about you, but he also knew how competitive you were and obviously hoped that would outweigh your fear. Surprise, surprise: it didnât.Â
You didnât want to do this, and honestly, you didnât trust Alexâs little advantage. You knew him a bit too well, to know that it was something good.Â
He looked down at you and noticed your brow begin furrowed. He lifted his hand and let his thumb smooth out the crease between your eyebrows. Your eyes darted up to look at him when you felt his touch. âWhatâs up babe, you ok?â he asked and you instinctively leaned closer to him. âI just really hate heights,â you said and rested your head on his shoulder. âYouâll be ok babe, I wonât let anything happen ok, and if you feel like you need to come back down thatâs fine, you know no one will be upset with you,â he explained to you and stroked your hair to soothe you. âI know, I just- I hate losing too,â you said and he laughed softly. âI know babe, maybe Dakota will give up before you,â Alex joked and it was your turn to laugh quietly.Â
âI heard that,â Dakota said and you laughed again. âSorry, Dak,â you said and he rolled his eyes. You hid your face in Alexâs shoulder as you laughed quietly and he smiled down at you. â I love you (y/n),â Alex spoke softly. âI love you too Alex,â you said and leaned up to kiss him softly.Â
The rest of the drive was short, and as you came to a stop you looked outside and sighed. âOh shit,â you mumbled to yourself knowing that your fear would eventually kick in.Â

Camera â Prosthuman (Bureau B)
Prosthuman by Camera
Camera, the kraut-rock band headed by a drummer named Michael Drummer, lays lyrical, introspective melodies over a hard rhythmic foundation. The cuts are always moving forward, yet in such small, tightly repetitive increments that they achieve a kind of stillness. This fifth full-length, the first since founding keyboard player Timm Brockmann left to join Michael Rotherâs touring band, achieves serenity amid fractious activity. It is calming like the noise of a train is calming, as you fall asleep to the click and clack of endless miles slipping away.
Drummer has brought in two new collaborators to fill out the line-up, Tim Schroeder for the trebly, fanciful synth work that lofts these compositions higher, Alex Kozmidi for the rough dissonance of guitar which brings them back to earth. Consider, for example, the title track, whose name roughly translates as âCheers, human!â It burbles with pensive synth arpeggios in a clean, cool imagined space. The drums here are muted and unshowy, a bare punctuation to intricate paragraphs of interlocking keyboard motifs. But just when it threatens to become a bit too sustainedly pristine, tipping into an uncanny valley of denatured, dehumanized music, Kozmidi brings in the buzz of bristling feedback, which saws up through the sound like a rusty knife through soap bubbles.
Drummer and his band bring in a variety of influences, bright Teutonic sonics like Cluster and Ulrich Schnauss, hypnotic meshes of percussion and recorded voice like Tarwater, as in âĆ°berall Teilchen/Teilchen Ć°berallâ and even some world-ish sounds, like the snake-charmed melody that weaves through dub-vibrating guitar sounds in âAlar Alar.â Bright, lucid synth reveries predominate, but there are some slammers, too, like the club-worthy, bass pummeling âSchmarfâ (the only cut to feature more or less conventional singing). After a string of trance-y dream sequences, this is one to get your blood rising again.
Camera commits whole-heartedly to the motorik style, going all in on an approach that has become, in recent years, more of an incidental ornament than its own thing. Yet while the bandâs allegiances are clear, theyâre not stultifying. Thereâs plenty of room to breathe and interpret things within the format. Prosthuman finds the still serenity thatâs embedded in constant motion and lets the world spin out around it.

Eli Manning is the best Super Bowl QB who was mediocre otherwise
Few quarterbacks have ever been better in Super Bowls. Those guys were all great in the regular season too, though.
Itâs not hard to make Eli Manningâs case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Manning ranks seventh all-time in both passing touchdowns and passing yards. He won two Super Bowls during a 16-season career with the New York Giants and was MVP of both games. The other four winners of multiple Super Bowl MVPs â Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Bart Starr, and Terry Bradshaw â received, or will receive, a bust in Canton without controversy.
And yet, itâs not difficult to make the case that he wasnât very good, either. He made the Pro Bowl just four times and was never once a first-team All-Pro.
There are a handful of other mostly mediocre quarterbacks who saved their best football for the Super Bowl. But Manning stands above the rest.
For 16 years, Manning was ... fine
Manning finished top 10 in the NFL in passing yards in seven of his 14 seasons as the Giantsâ starter (Kurt Warner started the majority of 2004 and Daniel Jones the majority of 2019). He was outside the top 10 in the other seven. He never once ranked in the top three.
The only major passing statistic Manning ever led the NFL in was interceptions, something he did three times. Heâs one of 11 quarterbacks to start at least 160 games in the last 16 seasons, and heâs dead last out of those 11 players in passer rating â behind Carson Palmer, Alex Smith, and Joe Flacco.
Manningâs career ended with 366 touchdowns, 244 interceptions, and an 84.1 passer rating in 236 games. For context, his brother Peyton Manning finished with 539 touchdowns, 251 interceptions, and a 96.5 passer rating in 266 games.
Peyton also won more than 70 percent of the games he started. Meanwhile, Eliâs starting record was as mediocre as it gets:
Eli Manning's career record is back at .500 (117-117) the universe is at a balance once again pic.twitter.com/CqQourlHTg
â SB Nation (@SBNation) December 15, 2019
Eliâs play â helped by his Super Bowl credentials â was good enough to keep him in the Giantsâ starting lineup for a decade and a half. It didnât earn him many accolades and never a spot among the NFLâs elite, however.
Eli still got a sendoff reserved for only the most esteemed players. Even the NFL commissioner released a statement about Manningâs retirement:
Congratulations, Eli. pic.twitter.com/KjjYyWbRo5
â Roger Goodell (@nflcommish) January 23, 2020
Manning was as respected as any player in the league, despite his career being a perfect blend of averageness and greatness. Itâs that contrast that means in five years, and likely several years beyond that, there will be debates about whether his Super Bowl performances warrant a spot in the Hall of Fame.
Manning was a different player in the biggest moments
In Manningâs two Super Bowl appearances, he beat the Patriots twice. Thatâs two of only three February losses for New England in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era.
Manning completed 66.2 percent of his passes in those two wins with 551 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and a 96.2 passer rating. Few quarterbacks have ever performed better with the Lombardi Trophy on the line.
His most memorable moment was connecting with David Tyree on a play that resulted in the demise of the undefeated Patriots:
Because it's Eli Manning & David Tyree's birthday... (Feb. 3, 2008)@Giants | #GiantsPride |#SBXLII pic.twitter.com/35VSo6dBkE
â NFL Throwback (@nflthrowback) January 3, 2020
Itâs the kind of play â along with his ridiculous throw to Mario Manningham four years later â that he only seemed to make at the most clutch time imaginable.
It wasnât just the Super Bowl either. Manning had a 99.1 passer rating in the three playoff games leading up to Super Bowl 42, and a 103.1 in the three-game run to Super Bowl 46. In the latter, he led the Giants to an overtime victory on the road against the 49ers in the NFC Championship, despite being hit 12 times by a ferocious San Francisco pass rush.
That version of Manning was one of the best to ever play the game. He just didnât perform like that in the regular season with any consistency. Only a few quarterbacks have ever had that kind of dichotomy between their play during the regular season and in the Super Bowl.
How many other QBs flipped a switch in the Super Bowl?
Manningâs career was defined by big moments on the biggest stage possible. But heâs not the only one whoâs built such a reputation in the modern era of the NFL.
Nick Foles
Two years ago, the Philadelphia Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl largely thanks to their backup quarterback, Nick Foles. He was thrust into action late in the year when Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending knee injury.
After leading Philadelphia through its postseason slate, Foles capped his run with 373 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in Super Bowl 52. He also caught a touchdown in the 41-33 win against the Patriots.
Foles joined Manning as one of only two quarterbacks to beat Brady in a Super Bowl. And like Manning, the superb performance that earned Foles Super Bowl MVP honors was much different than how he played during the regular season. Even with Folesâ Pro Bowl season in 2013 â in which he threw 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions â he has a career passer rating of 88.2. Thatâs well below his Super Bowl rating of 106.1.
He wasnât able to recreate his playoff magic in January 2019. Then Foles had a nightmare the next season with the Jaguars. First he went down with a shoulder injury, and later he was benched shortly after returning to the starting lineup. His status as a Super Bowl legend canât be erased, though.
Joe Flacco
Flaccoâs three-touchdown, no-interception performance in Super Bowl 47 sparked âeliteâ conversations â both serious and farcical â for years.
Flacco in the regular season: 218 TDs, 141 INTs, 84.1 passer rating Flaccoâs 2013 Super Bowl run (4 games): 11 TDs, 0 INTs, 117.2 passer rating
The masterful postseason earned Flacco a then-record $120.6 million contract too. He wasnât able to lead the Ravens back to the Super Bowl again before he was replaced by Lamar Jackson, though.
Doug Williams
After an unimpressive stint as the Buccaneers starter, Williams spent two years in the USFL. He was signed by Washington to be Jay Schroederâs backup, but took the reins and led the team to a Lombardi Trophy.
Williams in the regular season: 100 TDs, 93 INTs, 69.4 passer rating Williamsâ 1988 Super Bowl run (3 games): 7 TDs, 2 INTs, 93.7
Williams threw for four touchdowns and 340 yards in Super Bowl XXII, netting him a 127.9 rating that was as high as his best-ever regular season performance.
Jeff Hostetler
Hostetlerâs the only one on this list who wasnât named Super Bowl MVP, but he had an argument for the award in Super Bowl XXV after throwing for 222 yards and a touchdown. The award instead went to running back Ottis Anderson for his 102-yard day.
Hostetler in the regular season: 94 TDs, 71 INTs, 80.5 passer rating Hostetlerâs 1991 Super Bowl run (3 games): 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 92.5 passer rating
Hostetler made it to the playoffs again three years and added another four touchdowns with no interceptions. That upped his career passer rating in postseason play to 112.0.
None of those players pulled off Super Bowl magic twice, though. Thatâs where Manning stands alone, and why his legend as a Super Bowl hero will be hard for any other mediocre quarterback to top.

Ashmore Estates pt.3- Alex Schroeder x Reader
word count:3566
warnings: language, fluff, I think that's it
summary: based on season 4, episode 6 of DF. so all credit goes to the crew, the show, and the channel/network. The packet is read, and it's time to start the investigation.
(gif not mine!)
âSequestered within the never-ending cornfields of eastern Illinois, can be found the decaying remains of Ashmore Estates,â Dakota started. âOpened in 1857 as the Coles county poor farm, it had 30 buildings spread across 260 acres,â He continued. âThe day-to-day operation of the poor farm was unmonitored leading to unhygienic and unsafe living conditions. In the 1870s alone 12% of the residents passed away. One such inmate was Joe, a maintenance man for the almshouse. He had been walking back from town when he was hit by an oncoming train. Though a good samaritan carried him back home his injuries were too grave and he passed away,â Dakota explained and your heart sank. It always made you sad, when you heard stories like that, life truly was just unfair and unkind sometimes. âThatâs so sad,â Chelsea said. âI was just thinking the same thing. I couldnât even imagine,â you said and leaned your head against Alexâs shoulder. He squeezed your waist as Dakota read on.Â
âBut perhaps the most tragic death to occur was that of 5-year-old Elva Skinner in 1880 in a building previously on site. She had been left alone inside while the adults went out to work the farm,â He said and your heart dropped. You knew this was going to be terrible, and it was.Â
She had passed away after her dress had caught on fire despite them doing everything they could to help her. Everyone at the table was horrified by the way she died. âWhat a terrible way to die,â Chelsea said and you couldnât help but nod. There had been accounts of seeing her and hearing giggling.Â
âDude when we were here last time and we were all in our sleeping arrangements there was a girl giggling that was captured on camera,â Dakota brought up. It all came back to you, you remember watching the footage back and it scared the hell out of you.Â
âThat, like, puts validation to what happened to us,â Dakota said. âAnd now going back we have a name to go off of,â Alex spoke. âElva Skinner,â you repeated the little girl's name out loud.Â
The packet was handed to Chelsea and she began to read. âThose lucky enough to stay alive had to contend with truly atrocious conditions. Flies reportedly swarmed everywhere and there was noticeably rotten food prepared for dinner,â she explained and you shivered at the thought. âThatâs disgusting,â you said and shook your head.Â
âBy 1916, the conditions were so appalling that the original buildings were torn down and a new one was built in their place, operating for the next 40 years. It then transitioned to a private psychiatric hospital. Allegedly the most violent patients received electroshock treatments. It closed its doors in 1986,â Chelsea stopped.Â
âI forgot how layered this place is,â Dakota said.Â
The packet was then handed over to Alex. âThe most active areas include The first floor. This floor is active with every kind of paranormal activity imaginable,â he said before holding the packet in front of you. You accepted it from him and began to read.Â
âThe second-floor green room. A former poor house resident named Mary can be found in this room. People have heard her raspy breaths follow them through the building. Sheâs known for throwing and knocking over items,â You finished and passed it to Tanner.Â
âThe boiler room. Joe. the former maintenance man is found here. While he is normally friendly if he feels disrespected, he can become quite agitated,â Tanner read. He was known to not like females in the boiler room, they would get shoved, grabbed, and even have their hair pulled.Â
You reached for Alexâs hand and he held yours tightly. He knew you didnât fare well with that kind of information when it came to an overnight. It made you impossibly nervous, and he always made sure that you were ok before, during, and after.Â
There was a man who had actually been thrown across the room after defending the girls he was investigating with.Â
Alex held you tighter. He knew how much worry you held for your friends and so hearing that was something that made you very uneasy. You got protective easily, and so it was something you didnât like to hear.Â
Alex picked up the packet and began again. âThe third floor. This entire floor is incredibly active, especially by the former electroshock therapy room. Though Elva, the five-year-old who passed away on site is known to play up here there is another unknown entity that grabs people appearing as a phantom mist before disappearing completely,â Alex described. That entity was known to cause scratches and hurt anyone who may be vulnerable when up on that floor. Itâs like he can sense it and preys on the more sensitive and weak.Â
âWe did not know about that phantom mist on the third floor, reaching out and grabbing people,â Dakota said. âWhat I captured on film looked exactly like that description,â Tanner pointed out and it immediately took you back to that night, and what you had seen on camera. It was terrifying, especially back then when you were completely new to all of this.Â
âSo creepy, like I have the chills right now,â Dakota said and you nodded your head. âI do too, I remember that so well,â you added.Â
âTo be honest what you caught there was the reason I wanted to see this location so badly,â Alex admitted. âI have to see this for myself,â He added.Â
âI think itâs going to be a jam-packed night. What do you say we load some gear and get going,â Alex suggested and you internally cringed at the thought of staying there again.Â
âLetâs do it, dude,â Dakota said and Alex replied, âletâs start this night,âÂ
You all got up and walked back to the RV to get your gear. âI cannot believe we are back here,â You said to yourself as you looked at the building over your shoulder. âItâs been so long, I wonder if they will remember us?â Chelsea wondered aloud. âI bet they will,â you said and shook your head. You headed into the building for the first time in almost 7 years and it took your breath away. It was like taking a step into the past. You remembered your exact words when you first stepped into the building.Â
âGuys I think weâre screwed,â you repeated yourself from 7 years ago. âThatâs exactly what you said when we first stepped into this place,â Tanner recalled and you chuckled. âWell, itâs equally as true now as it was then,â you said. Everyone chuckled, and Alex walked over to wrap his arms around you. âEverything is going to be just fine, I promise you. I wonât let anything happen to you. I know you can do it, babe,â he said softly and kissed your head.Â
âI hate solos, Al,â you spoke quietly. âI know, but just think when itâs over we wonât have to come back. I know youâre nervous, but I also know how strong you are. You have so much more experience than you did last time, I have full confidence that you can handle this. And if anything happens Iâm right here, Iâm gonna be right here,â he tried to put you at ease. âOk,â you breathed out and wrapped your arms around him tightly. You pulled away the slightest bit so that you could lean up on your toes to place a kiss on his lips. Your hands clutched the fabric of his shirt tightly and his rested firmly on your hips.Â
You pulled away and softly smiled at him. He smiled back before pressing a lingering kiss on your forehead for good measure.Â
âYou guys ready to start?â Dakota asked and you looked over at him before sighing. âIâm ready when you guys are,â you said and looked up at Alex as if asking him the same question. He just nodded his head. âIâm ready, letâs go,â he said and grabbed your hand in his.Â
âSo we just got done setting up the gear room, we are about to jump into solos,â Alex announced and you shifted your weight nervously. âWhoâs ready?â He asked. âI am never ready for solos,â you told him. âIâm not ready either,â Dakota followed up. Everyone else agreed, and you chuckled. âSee, this is not a good idea Alex,â you said and softly glared at him. âYou guys will be fine,â he playfully brushed it off and you rolled your eyes. âThis is the worst. And we have no flashlights,â Tanner reminded everyone. Your heart dropped.Â
âTanner!â Alex spoke up. âYeah?â he asked. You could tell he was not excited at all, and you couldnât help but feel the exact same way. âSince you won the contest today, and you are a superior athlete, and a strong man,â Alex continued. âYup,â Tanner said as if telling him to continue. âYou win the privilegeâŠâ Alex paused. âThe privilege,â Tanner repeated. âOf going into Ashmore Estates, first,â Alex finished and your jaw dropped. âWhat?â he asked incredulously. You could hear Dakota snickering beside you and you slapped his arm. âWhy?â Tanner questioned again. âYou won the contest. You get to go in first,â Alex shrugged his shoulders like it was obvious. âThatâs not a prize, thatâs losing,â Tanner said. âAlex thatâs just mean,â you said and glared at him. âWell first place goes first right?â he shrugged again and you shook your head.Â
âItâs so mean, to let him go in first,â Dakota joked. âYou wanna take his place?â Alex asked and looked at him, âNo,â Dakota admitted and you chuckled. âThis is a crappy prize,â Tanner said and you agreed. âThen pride is your prize,â Alex suggested and you once again rolled your eyes. âPride is my prize?â He asked quizically. âYou are a sore winner,â Alex told him.Â
âThis literally makes no sense. Did you put any thought into this?â Tanner questioned your boyfriend. âYou know-you know what?â Alex slightly stammers. âGo for it,â Tanner encouraged him. âHow about, oh, I donât know maybe youâre wearing the enhanced recorder the entire time,â Alex spat out. âOh no! Iâm so scared. Not!â Tanner mockingly said. âAlright, this is good!â Alex said back. âPerfect,â Tanner retorted. âThis is good,â Alex reiterated. âCool,â Tanner said one last time. âWhatever, you know Iâll just go in there first,â Tanner said and you shook your head. âStir it all up,â He told you and you sighed heavily. âI mean there you go, thatâs super positive of you,â Alex said in mock positivity.Â
âAlright, letâs get going,â Tanner breathed out heavily. Before he walked away you went over and wrapped him in a hug. âYou got this Tanner,â you said and he smiled softly and kissed your head. âThanks, (n/n),â he said before taking a deep breath and making his way into the building. âRemember, youâre a winner,â Chelsea called after him. âBiggest winner out there,â Alex reiterated. âDoesnât feel like a winner,â Tanner spoke up. âYouâve got this!â you tried to encourage him.Â
As soon as he was in the building you walked over and smacked your boyfriend's arm. âThat was no prize Alex,â you said with a slight look of annoyance. âIt was for us,â he shrugged and smiled down at you smugly. You rolled your eyes. âYouâre gonna be the death of me Alex, I swear it,â you mumbled and he chuckled before tossing an arm around you and pulling you into his chest. âYou love me,â he whispered before kissing your head. âYouâre lucky I do,â you said and held his arm that was around you.Â
âThat I am,â he said and leaned forward to kiss your cheek.Â
âHey, what about us?â Dakota asked with his arms out in mock hurt. âAww, I love you guys too,â you said and walked over to hug Dakota before kissing his cheek and doing the same with Chelsea.Â
âTheyâre such babies,â she said and you laughed. âThey really are, honestly. I donât know how I put up with him sometimes,â you nudged her shoulder and she chuckled. You all sat at the table once again. You set your camera down so you could grab his free hand and hold it in your lap. Just to hold him in some way. It eased your nerves.Â
âThat was kinda mean, not gonna lie,â Dakota said and you nodded your head. âHeâs right Al,â you said and looked at him. âAre you like mad at him?â Chelsea asked softly. âNo. He just won. The prize was not a good one at all,â Alex explained it simply. âObviously Alex,â you said and nudged his shoulder. âWhatâs the moral of this story? Donât win? Donât try?â Dakota asked curiously. âJust be cautious. Watch your back,â Alex told you. âOh wow, thatâs nice,â your sarcasm practically dripping from your words. âA prize can turn into a surprise, real fast,â Chelsea spoke up and you gave her a tight-lipped smile. âTrue, true,â Dakota agreed with her.Â
âDo you think heâs ok up there?â you asked nervously. âHeâs Tanner, Iâm sure heâs ok why donât you check on him if youâre worried?â Chelsea asked and smirked playfully as she handed you the walkie. You rolled your eyes and took it, âIâm not trying to scare him Iâm just gonna check on him. But if it does scare him then thatâs what happens,â you shrugged and softly smiled. They all chuckled. âYouâre too good of a person,â Dakota shook his head and you laughed. âSure, ok,â you said and stuck your tongue out at him playfully.Â
You held down the button for a few seconds before speaking, knowing that it might not scare him since he would hear that. âHey, Tanner,â you said. âShit,â you heard him curse and you internally cringed. âYeah, go for Tanner,â you heard him say and you could tell he was already a bit drained from being in there. âIâm sorry to scare you, I just wanted to check in and make sure that you were ok,â you spoke. âItâs ok, I just wasnât expecting it. Itâs freaky up here honestly,â he told you and you nodded despite him not being able to see you. âAre you ok?â you asked sweetly. âYeah, Iâm ok, just a bit freaked out. Iâll see you in a bit ok?â he asked and you just sighed. âAlright, Weâre here if you need us at all,â you said genuinely hoping to ease his nerves. âThanks (n/n),â that was the last you heard.Â
âAre you ok?â Alex asked and pulled you closer to his side. You rested your head on his shoulder and nodded. âIâm ok, just uneasy,â you said and sighed. âI know this may sound weird, but why don't you go next?â Chelsea suggested with a small smile. You looked at her with wide eyes. âWhat? You want me to pee myself?â you asked in disbelief. Everyone chuckled, âNo, I just thought it would be a good idea to get it over with and not have to wait and let anxiety build up even more,â She explained and you let your shoulders fall.Â
âYouâre probably right, it would just be easier for me to go and get it over with. Gosh, this really sucks Alex,â you said and nudged him. He kissed the top of your head and smiled down at you.Â
âCan I talk to you before I go in Al?â you asked him and he looked down at you in concern. âYeah, of course, babe,â he said and you began to get off of your seat. They all looked at you in worry. âIs everything ok,(y/n)?â Dakota asked and you just nodded. âYeah, I just wanted to talk to him for a second. âWeâll be right back,â you said and grabbed Alexâs hand. You both set your cameras down before walking away a bit.
âIs everything ok?â Alex asked as he placed his arms around you. âI really am scared Al, what if they do recognize us and something bad happens?â you told him. âWhat if something grabs Chelsea if sheâs in the basement or something and she gets hurt? What if one of you gets hurt? There are just so many what-ifs and Iâm scared,â you relayed your fears to him. He looked down at you with a soft gaze. âHey, hey, donât think like that. I know youâre scared but nothing will happen. And even if something does, we have each other. All of us have each other's backs, thatâs the way itâs always been and Iâm sure thatâs the way it will always be. So if you need to break down or fall apart, weâre right here. Iâm right here,â he said and pulled you in close.Â
You wrapped your arms around him and held onto him tightly not wanting to let go. âI just want us all to be ok,â you spoke softly and he leaned down to kiss your head. âWe will be,â he said and pulled away from you slightly so he could look at you.Â
You moved your arms up and around his neck to pull him down and place a kiss on his lips. He reached up to place a hand on your cheek and you leaned into his touch. He couldnât help but always want you closer, he could never put his finger on it but something about you was just so endearing. Maybe it was everything?
Just like that, he made you forget where you were, and what you were about to do. He made you feel at home, and secure. That was always the case, he took the fear away even if only for a few seconds. It was just gone.Â
Before you knew it you had to pull away, and for a few seconds, you felt like you could breathe. He smiled down at you and pushed a strand of hair away from your face. âPromise, youâll be here when I get back?â you asked looking up at him with a worried gaze. âI promise you,â he reassured and kissed your forehead. âOk, ok Iâm fine,â you said trying to be sure of yourself. âYou ready?â he asked and placed his arm around your shoulders. You nodded your head curtly and took a deep breath. âIâm ready,â you said and he guided you back towards your friends.Â
âHey, you ok?â Chelsea asked when you sat back down.â Yeah, Iâm ok,â you smiled softly at her. Before Dakota got to speak Tanner came rushing out of the building. âWoah, Tanner are you ok?â You asked as he quickly made his way over to the table. âI just heard whistling,â he told you, you could hear the shock in his voice. âWhat? A whistle?â Dakota asked incredulously. âLike on the second floor, I started to hear this faint whistling. Thereâs no way if I didnât have this device that Iâd have heard it,â Tanner explained and your heart rate picked up. âThatâs crazy, Tanner,â you expressed. Alex and Dakota let out a simultaneous âwhat?â.Â
âYes, it was the second floor,â he informed you. âThatâs freaking terrifying,â Chelsea said.Â
âDude, I heard it multiple times,â He told you. âWhistling, for sure?â Dakota asked. â100%â Tanner assured him. âLike, it, enough to where it, it, froze me,â He described his experience.Â
âThatâs super weird because thereâs supposed to be a woman, Mary, on that floor. Sheâs a poltergeist on that floor, sheâll move things around, and other claims are that there is raspy, like, whispering and breathing,â Alex explained some claims from that floor. âDid you go like, approach where it came from?â Dakota asked. âFuck that,â Tanner stated and you chuckled. âI concur,â you agreed. âSee, thank you,â Tanner said and gestured to you and you just nodded at him. âYou didnât go towards it?â Dakota asked again. âI am not exploring this place by myself the entire night. Someone else can take that second floor and do the follow-up,â Tanner said. âIâm proud of myself. Iâm calling it quits,â he said and you just nodded. âIâm proud of you too Tanner,â you said and got up to give him a high-five. He instead wrapped his arm around your shoulder and brought you into a big side hug. âAlright, (y/n), Itâs your turn. Youâre next up,â Alex said and you sighed heavily.Â
âThis is great, Iâm so excited,â you said sarcastically and threw your arms up in mock excitement. They all chuckled. âYouâve got this,â Tanner said and squeezed your shoulder. âAlright, alright fine. Iâm going,â you sighed and you got handed the Ovilus. âBye guys,â you waved and as you walked away you felt someone come up behind you. You turned around to see Alex and smiled. âWhat? Did I forget something?â you asked. He just leaned down and pressed his lips to yours for a few seconds before pulling away. âJust that,â he said and smiled back at you. You shook your head, âYouâre too much sometimes Al, now go on, I have to get this over with,â you said and shooed him away. âIf I die, I love you guys!â you called over your shoulder. âWe love you too!â you heard them call back.Â
âAlright guys, letâs do this,â you spoke and opened the door.Â

Top 25 Films of 2016
25. Blue Jay
Directed by Alex Lehmann; Written by Mark Duplass
Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson play old high school sweethearts who meet by a chance encounter two decades later in this darling of an indie film. The two actors give charming and heart-wrenching performances in a film that depicts the old kindlings of a past relationship. With a beautiful story that delves into the melancholy, Blue Jay genuinely conveys the regrets and regressed love between ex lovers.
24. Swiss Army Man
Written and Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Sheinert (known as The Daniels)
Arguably the most original and authentic film to come out in 2016, Swiss Army Man gained momentum and noteriety through its peculiar, yet comedic, storyline. A man (Paul Dano) who had been stranded on an island for a presumably long time was about to end his own life until he comes across a flatulent dead corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) washed up on the beach. Starting out as a survival drama, it quickly evolved into a quirky buddy comedy as the man discovers the dead corpseâs many powers. Disturbing at times, it completely embraces its lunacy and whimsical humor, and it emphasizes the importance of imagination, which it boldly excels at.
23. 13thÂ
Directed by Ava Duvernay; Written by Spencer Averick and Ava Duvernay
With its controversial subject matter, this documentary couldnât have been released at a more convenient and ironic time. In the span of The Black Lives Matter movement; to the hearing of Trayvon Martinâs shooter, George Zimmerman; and the 2016 presidential election, 13TH shook up viewers with its analysis on the thirteenth amendment and its correlation with Americaâs issue of mass incarceration of African-Americans. The film goes full depth into the history and business of the privately-owned prison industry and its ties in government. As alarming and concerning as these issues are, 13TH not only effictively tells the history of this dilemma, it commands oneâs attention in efforts to act upon it.
22. Jackie
Directed by Pablo Larrain; Written by Noah Oppenheim
Playing the role of Jacqueline Kennedy after the assissination of her husband, Natalie Portman adds a revelatory performance to her illustrious career. Marvellously shot by cinematagrapher, Stephane Fontaine, with the eerie score from Mica Levi, the film commits its attention on the widowed first lady allowing Portman to guide the audience through the absurd and turbulent events during a time in history where paranoia and confusion were set in the hearts and minds of many Americans.
21. Silence
Directed by Martin Scorcese; Adapted Screenplay by Jay Cocks and Martin Scorcese
After twenty years of anticipation, auteur Martin Scorcese crafts a film that portrays theology in an alternative light in which it seperates itself from other films that center around religion. Based on the story from Japanese novelist, Shusaki Endo, Andrew Garfield plays Sebastiao Rodrigues, a Jesuit preist who decides whether to apostatize while searching for his mentor (Liam Neeson) who was captured in a Japanese village in the 17th century. Its long run time and slow pace can pose as a challenge, but its striking cinematography from Rodrigo Prieto is mesmerizing, and its unique perspective on religion emphasizes important moral questions in relation to conflicting ideologies from different cultures.Â
20. Paterson
Written and Directed by Jim Jarmusch
Jim Jarmusch returns with a bang with this meditative, heart-warming drama starring lead man, Adam Driver, who plays a busdriver named Paterson who lives in Paterson, New Jersey and has a profound love for writing poetry. The film delves into the heart and mind of Paterson as he encounters the many people and places while on the job and at home. It takes one on a journey through an artistâs creative process in this case Patersonâs poetry as he gathers inspiration and tranforms the subtle beauty around him into words on a page. Itâs quiet, easy-going, and thoughtful, and Paterson leaves you with an appreciation for the simple things in life. Â
19. Kubo and the Two Strings
Directed by Travis Wright; Story by Shannon Tindle and Marc Haimes; Screenplay by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler
With a hearfelt story and its eye-dropping visuals from stop animation studio, Laika, Kubo and the Two Strings impresses on many levels. Beyond the incredible images is the story of a rebellious young Japanese boy who must make a decision that will effect his familyâs legacy forever. Armed with his masterful abilities to play a two string sitar-like instrument called a shamisen and to tell stories through oragami, Kubo embarks on a journey of self-discovery that is both enchanting and enlightening -- a joy from start to finish.
18. The Salesman
Written and Directed by Asghar Farhadi
This acclaimed dramatic thriller from the director of âA Seperationâ is a little gem that sublimely blends mystery and comedy in a story where a couple experiences a traumatic event that could unravel their relationship. Being an unmarried and childless couple in Tehren, Rana and Emad are both actors and members of a theater company that is in the middle of production of Arthur Millerâs, âDeath of a Salesman.â After abandoning their apartment that was about to collapse from poor infrastructure, they move into a new flat only to encounter the horrors from the previous tenant who was a prostitute. Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti are magnificent as the two protaganists, and the film is well-deserving of its Oscar win for Best Foreign Film.Â
17. Split
Written and Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Itâs a slippery slope when depicting a character who has dissociative identity disorder, or more commonly known as multiple personality syndrome. The argument in which the disorder is accurately portrayed remains, but as a whole, Split is a return to form for the largely polarized director, M. Night Shyamalan. Undoubtedly, the film owes its success to the audaciousness and dexterity of James McAvoy, who plays a troubled, ominous figure who struggles with DID and kidnaps three girls. The protagonist is one of the estranged girls played by Anya Taylor Joy, who is equally superb with a compelling background story. As per typical Shyamalan films, there is a reveal within the film that may pleasantly surprise his fans, but all in all, the film is entertaining with an ingenious plot and regains positive momentum for the director leading up to his future projects.Â
16. American Honey
Written and Directed by Andrea Arnold
Messy, beautiful, bewildering, and vibrant. British director, Andrea Arnoldâs docudrama follows an abused, poor, and inquisitive female teenager who runs away from her despairing household with a crew of young and reckless kids who travel around the U.S. selling magazine subscriptions for âsupposedâ fundraisers. Sasha Lane and Shia Leboeuf command the helm with their graceless charm and palpable chemistry, seamlessly weaving their ways through their uncarved path to adulthood. Because it embraces a non-structural narrative format, the film strays away from common stereotypes, inviting complexities and contradictions within the characters and story. Itâs a fresh take on an adventure/coming-of-age story that excludes any moral stance or agenda, refraining judgement away from the characters. It simply breathes and lives from one moment to the next.
15. Lion
Directed by Garth Davis; Screenplay by Luke Davies
Lion is an incredibly emotional film that especially tugs on the heart strings of parents. Based on the non-fiction book, âA Long Way Homeâ by Saroo Brierley, the film is about a young boy named Saroo (Sunny Pawar) who accidently gets lost in India and struggles to survive on his own. After going through the foster care system and growing up with foster parents in Australia, the film flashes forward couple decades where Saroo, now played by Dev Patel, discovers how to track down his biological family using Google Earth. Nominated for a three Oscars, Lion effectively hits all the right notes even if the film is a giant Google product placement.
14. Hidden Figures
Directed by Theodore Melfi; Screenplay by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi; Based on the Book by Margot Lee Shetterly
Hidden Figures tells the story of three influential women who were monumental in the development of NASA in the early sixties. Very much a David versus Goliath story, three of these women had to fight their way against gender and racial discrimination in order to excel in NASA and pave the way for Americaâs goal to win the space race. Although it focuses on the three characters, the filmâs main protagonist centers around Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) who calculated the launch coordinates and trajectory for the Atlas rocket. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae star in an ensemble cast in this powerful biopic that exudes positivity and inspiration.
13. Captain Fantastic
Written and Directed by Matt Ross
Probably portraying the most eccentric and ultra-progressive family in the history of film, Captain Fantastic is a stunningly ethereal adventure/fantasy drama about a radically idealistic father (Viggo Mortensen) and his six children who live an isolated life in the woods and must travel into civilization after a family tragedy had occurred. The father is an extremely well-disciplined man who rigorously teaches his kids through physical training and intense education. Because of his socialist ideals and political beliefs, he has successfully made his family into survivalists, which has lead them to a comfortable and blossoming life in the woods. His ideals are challenged when he faces the real world during their adventure into society. With a charming young cast and a phenomenal performace from Mortensen, Captain Fantastic is a remarkable, feel-good story with a philosophical outlook.
12. Nocturnal Animals
Directed by Tom Ford; Screenplay by Tom Ford; Based on the Novel, âTony and Susan,â by Austin Wright
Drawing inspiration from Austin Wrightâs 1993 novel, âTony and Susan,â Nocturnal Animals mends elegance and style into its bloody, brutal story which revolves around the themes of betrayal, heartbreak, and revenge. Although Amy Adams is arguably underused in this role, itâs the supporting cast -- Jake Gyllenhaal, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Michael Shannon, and Karl Glusman -- who carry the film exceptionally well. From the Gucci maestro and director of A Single Man, Tom Ford combines his unique and authetic storytelling with expertly-crafted cinematography engaging the viewer into a world of sheer beauty and peril. Itâs vivid and vicious, and even in its peculiar moments, the film shines exponentially.
11. Hell or High Water
Directed by David Mackenzie; Written by Taylor Sheridan
The middle of the year was hit with a bang when this wild and rambunctious thriller was released, making Hell or High Water the highest grossing indie film of the year. From the writer of âSicario,â Taylor Sheridan composes a skillfully crafted heist story that rather than it completely embracing the Western genre, it portrays more of a humbling family drama. Chris Pine and Ben Foster play Toby and Tanner, two brothers who rob banks in West Texas in order to pay off the local banks before Tobyâs farmland is seized. Jeff Bridges is remarkable as the Texas Ranger who takes on the challenge to put them into custody. This neo-Western is masterfully shot with envigorating action scenes and does not disappoint with an exceptional cast.
10. Â Manchester by the Sea
Written and Directed by Kenneth Lonergan
It takes a special film that can effectively mix humor with densly serious subject matter without being offensive or mean-spirited. Manchester By the Sea is a film that does not shy away from the irony and sarcasm that occurs when the protagonist, Lee (Casey Affleck) is chosen to become the guardian of his late brotherâs teenage son (Lucas Hedges). Through a series of flashbacks interspersed throughout the film, the reason becomes clear why Lee has become a damaged man, and since he is no stranger to tragedy, he helps serve as a guide to his nephew as he comes to terms with his fatherâs death. A powerful yet interesting account on grief, Manchester By the Sea definitely brings the tears but also with a subtle quirkiness that softens the pain.
9. The Lobster
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos; Written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filipou
Brilliantly dystopic and hilariously cynical, Colin Farrel stars as David, a lonely introvert living in the futuristic world called The City where he is enrolled into The Hotel and must find a romantic partner in forty-five days or he will be turned into an animal. The film is essentially a critique of the social norms of love in modern society. It highlights the absurdities and ridiculous behaviors within The Hotel with its dark humor and hyperbolic metaphors. With subtle acting; wonderfully crafted and complex characters along with an ingeniuous story, The Lobster impresses on many levels and provokes further thought after the first viewing.Â
8. La La Land
Written and Directed by Damian Chazelle
Itâs an ode to old Holloywood musicals, but itâs fresh in its approach, and it simply bounces off the big screen with its sharp contrasts and hues. It is no surprise that La La Land has recieved critical acclaim and overwhelming attention since its release. It is officially tied with âAll About Eveâ and âTitanicâ with the most Oscar nominations -- fourteen. At the heart of it is an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and a traditionalist jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) who fall in love in Los Angeles all the while attempting to reach new heights in their artistic endeavors. Itâs a classic tale about love and ambition with incredible fervor and choreographic prowess, and it adds another superb film to the list of the young phenom-director, Damian Chazelle.
7. The HandmaidenÂ
Directed by Chan-wook Park; Screenplay by Seo-Kyeong Jeong and Chan-wook Park; Based on the Novel, âFingersmith,â by Sarah Waters
Being one of the longest films on this list, The Handmaiden masterfully grasps your attention in every scene, and it does not do so in predictable and obvious ways. From the director of âStokerâ and âOldboy,â Chan-wook Park returns with a story filled with mystery, betrayal, and deception. Originally written as a novel titled, âFingersmith,â by Sarah Waters, a handmaiden is hired to care after a Japenese hieress, but inconspicuously, the handmaiden has been hired to beguile her. Because of the storyâs many twists and turns, it is one of the most entertaining films to watch and includes one of the most rewarding endings in a film this year.Â
6. Fences
Directed by Denzel Washington; Screenplay by August Wilson; Based on the Play, âFences,â by August Wilson
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give a riveting performance in August Wilsonâs film adaptation, Fences. Washington plays Troy Maxson, a rough-around-the-edges, loquatious working class man who must come to terms with the events in his life while raising his family in the fifties. From poverty to the Jim Crow laws and time in prison, Troyâs troubled past shapes his worldview, so much so that it escalates tension between him and his son, Cory (Jovan Adepo), who wants to play on a college football team. Although Troy commands the story, his wife (Viola Davis) is his crux and the chassis that holds the family together. This is arguably Davisâ and Washingtonâs best performances of their career, and because of its intense and personal moments, Fences is a humbling masterpiece.Â
5. Loving
Written and Directed by Jeff Nichols
Loving tells the powerful, true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who were arrested in Virginia in 1958 due to anti-micegenation laws. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga provide a powerful performance, and their on-screen chemistry is palpable, but much of the credit goes to director, Jeff Nichols. Loving could have easily been an over-reaching Oscar bait film, badgering the viewer with maudlin, overtly sentimental material, but it is the complete contrary. Its quietness and steadfast calmness emphasize the love and passion between these two characters, which makes it an absolute treasure.
4. 20th Century Women
Written and Directed by Mike Mills
1970âČs. Second-wave feminism. The Talking Heads. There were some important cultural changes occuring when a young teen named Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) was being raised by his mother (Annette Bening) and two other women (Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig) in Santa Barbara, California. 20th Century Women is indeed a dysfunctional family drama, but its layered political and societal themes bring a rugged texture and complexity that emphatically ring true through its characters. The film highlights Jamieâs struggle for identity as he searches for the many forms of masculinity portrayed in pop culture all the while his mother wishes to understand his desires and protect him from self-destruction. With a mesmerizing cast and a distinct tone, 20th Century Women beautifully depicts a group of people who are striken by the uncertainty of their futures and yet manage to navigate their lives while remaining together.
3. A Monster Calls
Directed by J.A. Bayona; Screenplay by Patrick Ness; Based on the Novel by Patrick Ness
Easily one of the most beautifully shot and animated films of the year, A Monster Calls will most certainly elicit a good cry. Interestingly enough, this film appeared to be catered for young audiences, but its dark and mature subject matter seem anything but suitable for its target audience. Suprisingly, the film holds its own for its unique direction and grounded tone when dealing with a story centering around grief and isolation. While his mother (Felicity Jones) is striken by a terminal illness, a boy (Lewis MacDougall) discovers a tree monster that could help him cope with the traumatic events that have occured in his life. The film is daring in regards to showcasing the dark and somber moments from the tragedies of this young boyâs life, and it successfully entices due to its strong visual and emotional magnetism. A brilliant and poignant achievement.
2. Arrival
Directed by Denis Villeneuve; Screenplay by Eric Heisserer; Based on the Story, âStory of Your Life,â by Ted Chiang
Denis Villenueve is one of the great filmmakers of this generation, and he surely does not disappoint with his latest sci-fi drama, Arrival. Like most of Villeneuveâs work, he brings gravitas to each scene by incorporating underlying tension between characters and evoking a subtle dread and unease, which has been a signature within his filmography. Arrival embodies that gravitas except with a remarkable story and new genre in which Villeneuve has yet to explore until now -- science fiction. Amy Adams is spectacular as linguistics professor, Louise Banks, who is delt an overwhelming assignment from the federal government to deconstruct the language of alien inhabitants who have landed on Earth via twelve elliptical spacecrafts. Gorgeously shot by upcoming cinematographer, Bradford Young, it is dauntingly visceral with its high contrast and greyish midtones, but itâs the story that shines and creates a breath-taking reveal that will be relished for quite some time. Villeneuve is a master of character study, and Arrival is yet another marvelous addition to his arsenal of acclaimed work.
1. Moonlight
Directed by Barry Jenkins; Screenplay by Barry Jenkins; Story by Tarell Alvin McCraney
Itâs difficult for a film to justify the hype it has recieved, and in a lot of ways, too much hype could do so much to even discredit it. There are many reasons why some art is deemed âgreat art,â but how âgreat artâ moves past all the expectations is by embodying an element in which it trancends beyond its labels. A great film is a great piece of art. It acts as a vessel that propels beyond the screen and into our lives. Moonlight is that film, and it is a cinematic triumph. In its entirity, itâs seamlessly executed aesthetically, technically, and emotionally. It tells the story of Chiron who grows up gay, poor, and black in an impoverished neighborhood in Miami. The story is told in three parts: Chiron as a young child, a high-school teenager, and a man in his mid-twenties. Tragedy has followed Chiron his whole life due to his sexuality, which is harshly rejected in an area pervaded by violence and poverty. His survival is dependent upon his ability to conform all the while his mother struggles with drug abuse. Moonlight is a timeless story about love that is universal and was released in a year where the marginalized needed a voice. Well, Moonlight is that voice, and it speaks volumes over the hype.Â

Review âChristopher Robinâ ****
Christopher Robin is a 2018 American fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Marc Forster and written by Alex Ross Perry, Tom McCarthy and Allison Schroeder, from a story by Greg Brooker and Mark Steven Johnson.
Rating   **** Fun and philosophy goes hand in hand On the face it looks like a funny movie, but as the story progresses it leaves a deep impression on our minds. We, in the modern world, live life more meticulously than it's required. We claim to love our family but it's actually our job and workplace that dominate our minds. There are lots of stresses and works that take much of our time and pull us away from the family. All this leads to disconnection of emotional bonds that leads to aloofness. When the film starts, we see young Christopher Robin having a good time with animals like Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, and Rabbit. He has to leave them on account of going to a boarding school. Circumstances force Christopher to take responsibilities fast and we see him as a mature man married to Evelyn. His daughter Madeline is his world, as per his saying, though he is more bothered about his stressful job. Work takes most of his time and his attention on family is less. The more his family wants him, the more he is required to focus on his job. Twist in the tale takes place when he is accidentally reunited with Winnie-the-Pooh. He recalls his past moments and the beautiful animal world makes him forget the worries of life and he strives to make his family happy. But it takes him courage and guts to counter his  workaholic bosses. As the movie progresses towards its end, the pace and drama increases. It shows a collision of human world with animal world. And proves the philosophical thought that rather than sharp brain, we need big happy heart to be happy and make others happy too.  Winnie the Pooh, is an adorable character as he grabs sympathy and attention due to his voice. The bonding and chemistry between Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh is outstanding.  This movie is for every age group because it offers fun, teachings and drama that they desire for.

Ashmore Estates pt.2- Alex Schroeder x Reader
word count:2219
warnings: fear of heights, our sweet and understanding Alex, maybe some language
summary: based on season 4 episode 6 of DF. so all credit goes to the crew, the show, and the channel/network. the group tackles the newest hurdle and challenge. Rock climbing in an old abandoned silo, but is it really your forte?
so, you guys! I'm back. I know it's been ages and I'm so so so sorry. I've been doing school. and I suddenly made the decision to drop out after some major life events took place last week. I know it's probably annoying but If you could pray for me or just even send kind thoughts it would really give me hope and it's more than more appreciated.
I love you to the moon and to Saturn!

(not my gif!)
âIâm gonna flip out,â you thought to yourself. Tanner noticed your unease and gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze and sent you a reassuring smile. You smiled back gratefully.Â
You exited the RV and immediately you looked up to see how tall it was. You held Alexâs hand, âyou guys ready to climb?â he asked and looked back at you all. He gave your hand a squeeze and pulled it up to place a kiss on the back of it.Â
âThat is so tall, I cannot climb that high,â Dakota said as you walked closer to the building. âNo, youâre gonna do great,â Alex told him and you shook your head. âIâm gonna freak out,â you said quietly. âYouâll be ok babe, I promise,â Alex had heard you and pulled you closer to place his arm around your shoulders. He kissed your head once you had stepped into the building.Â
The whole group could tell that you were nervous and they all worried that you might get scared up there. When Alex let go of your hand Chelsea was quick to grab it and you smiled gratefully at her. âThank you,â you mumbled and she just smiled at you. âYouâll do just fine, (y/n/n),â Dakota said and gave you a side hug. You sighed in relief at the thought of your friends being there with you. It was nice to have a support system in times like these when you really needed them.
Â
Yeah, you climbed to the top of the giant mailbox, but this felt different. You were relying on your strength to get you to the top of a giant concrete wall. Where you could easily lose your footing and fall, whereas there were guard rails and stairs on the former.Â
You all got geared up, and ready to climb the wall, but your nerves began to build up even more at the thought of being so high up. Your heart started racing faster and your stomach began to turn.Â
You all chalked up your hands and were ready to climb the wall. Were you physically prepared and safe yes, but in your mind, you thought of all the things that could go wrong. You were very out of it, you couldnât focus and that was making it all worse.Â
You walked into the silo and looked up. To put it simply, you were screwed.Â
âWoah!â Chelsea was in awe of how high it went. âOh, damn. Look at this,â Tanner said as he looked around him. You backed up and ended up hitting Tannerâs chest instead of a wall. âShit, Iâm sorry,â you said and moved away from him. âHey, no youâre fine. Are you ok?â he asked as he took in the expression on your face. You looked scared and it worried him. âYeah, yeah. Iâm totally ok,â you told him, and just as he was about to say something Alex spoke up.Â
âNow you guys already know the rules. Whoever makes it the highest is going to be very happy for solos tomorrow. Dakota, Chelsea. You guys wanna go first?â he asked and looked at them expectantly. âLetâs do it,â Chelsea said. âGame on,â Dakota directed at his sister and she said the same thing right back.Â
They got all hooked up and were ready to go. âHere we go,â Chelsea said as she prepared to climb as high as she could. âNo matter how much we hate each other at the end of this, weâre still family,â Dakota turned and pointed at his sister as he spoke. Despite his comment that would usually make you laugh all you could think of was having to climb up there.Â
âAlright, you guys ready?â Alex asked. âLetâs do it,â Dakota said.Â
â3,2,1, Climb,â Alex gave them a countdown.Â
You watched as they both began their ascension of the wall.Â
âLetâs go,â Tanner encouraged them, and you immediately reached for Alexâs hand. He looked over at you and his gaze softened at the fear on your face. He could feel how scared you were by the shaking of your hand in his. He pulled you close and wrapped his arms around you. Your back was to his chest as he rested his head on your shoulder. âYouâre ok, nothing is gonna go wrong I promise you. Itâll be over before you know it, and you wonât have to do it again alright?â he said softly so that only you could hear him. You slowly nodded your head as your eyes stared above you. You held his arms tighter around you. âI need you to answer me ok, talk to me,â he said and you let out a shaky sigh. âI donât think I can do it,â you said and shut your eyes tightly.Â
âThis is actually not easy,â you heard Chelsea say and you shook your head. âAl, I donât wanna do this anymore,â you told him fearfully. âAre you sure you donât wanna try?â he asked just to make sure because he knew how competitive you were and you might regret it later that you never even tried.Â
âIâm sure, I donât think I can do it right now,â you breathed out nervously. âThatâs ok babe, you donât have to do it,â he told you and held you tighter. âIâm sorry,â you mumbled. âDonât be sorry, itâs completely ok sweetheart,â he said and kissed your head softly. You let out a huge sigh of relief and relaxed against him a bit.Â
âOh my god, my arms are already losing strength,â you heard Dakota complain and you giggled a bit. You kept silent as you watched your friends climb higher.Â
âDakota,â Chelsea spoke to her brother. âWhat?â He called. âIâm scared,â Chelsea admitted with a nervous chuckle. âIâm scared too,â He retorted. A small smile took its place on your face during the interaction.Â
âI see some wiggling arms are you getting tired?â Alex asked. You heard Dakota curse as he tried to hold on. âOk, Iâm actually at my strength capacity, I think,â Chelsea said and you squeezed Alexâs arms tighter. âSheâs fine babe,â he said and hugged you tighter for a second.Â
âOk, Iâm calling it,â She announced and you let out a breath you didnât know you were holding.Â
âKeep going dude, youâre almost halfway there,â She encouraged Dakota.Â
âYou got this Dak,â Alex tried to motivate his friend. âI donât know if I can go any higher,â Dakota said and made the ultimate decision to make his way back to the ground.Â
When his feet touched the ground you smiled. âI beat you,â he said to Chelsea and you chuckled. Alex let you go in order to get ready for his turn. âYou guys are up next,â Chelsea stated. âLetâs do it,â Tanner said and got to his spot. Dakota, Tanner, and Chelsea looked at you when you stayed in your spot. âArenât you coming?â Tanner asked and you gingerly shook your head. âNo, I um- I just- I-â Alex spoke up to get you out of having to explain. âShe doesnât want to and thatâs fine, she doesnât have to,â he told them and you smiled thankfully at him.Â
âYeah of course, no, thatâs fine,â Dakota said and went to stand next to you. He tossed his arm across your shoulders and squeezed you reassuringly. You smiled up at him. âNo worries, (y/n), itâs no big deal,â Chelsea said and stood on the other side of you. You leaned your head on her shoulder. âRoot for me guys, Iâm counting on you,â Tanner said and smiled at you. You chuckled and shook your head at his antics.Â
âWho do you thinkâs gonna win?â Alex asked. Chelsea and Dakota looked at each other. âTanner, for sure,â Chelsea said and Dakota agreed playfully. âScrew you guys,â Alex said and you smiled over at him hoping to encourage him. âI believe in you babe,â you said and shot a thumbs up his way. âAt least someone is rooting for me,â He said and everyone chuckled.Â
âClimbers, are you ready?â Dakota asked âYeah,â Tanner confirmed. âReady,â Alex spoke up.Â
âIn 5- Go! Go!â His raised voice made you flinch a bit. Immediately they started up the wall and your hand reached out for Chelseaâs.Â
âOh, man,â you already heard Alex sigh. âSlow and steady wins the race,â Dakota advised teasingly. âTannerâs really high up there already,â Alex said and you looked over at him to see that he was in fact very high up. âTanner, how do you do that?â Alex questioned. âTanner!â Dakota exclaimed. âHe looks like Spider-Man,â Chelsea compared and you chuckled. âBe careful guys,â you called out.Â
âTheyâre making us look so weak,â Dakota complained to Chelsea and you giggled. âWell, I think you guys did great,â You said. âAt least you did it,â you said softly.Â
You smiled softly at them and they both gave you a side hug.Â
âI donât think I can make it,â Alex spoke up. âYou can do it Al!â you tried to keep his spirits up. âKeep going Al, you got this!â Chelsea shouted after you. âDamn, Tannerâs gonna make it to the top,â Dakota said.Â
Just as he said it Tanner called down. âI did it!â you chuckled and shook your head.Â
They both came down and you all congratulated Tanner on his victory. You walked over to Alex and wrapped your arms around him. âYou did great bub,â you said and smiled up at him. âThanks, babe,â he said and leaned down to kiss you softly.Â
Alex walked over and gave Tanner a high-five. âYou won,â He said. âYou did, fair and square,â Chelsea said and you nodded in agreement. âAlright, no more fun and games. Letâs go read this packet,â Alex announced as you all headed out.Â
âThis was fun. But my forearms are on fire right now,â Tanner said and you chuckled. âOh, yeah,â Alex agreed and you wrapped your arm around his. Placing a kiss on his shoulder while you walked.Â
As you walked back out to the RV you began to think about the packet read. You were excited, to be honest, but as per usual there was a bit of fear in you as well.Â
âAre you guys excited about the packet?â Alex asked and everyone looked at him like he was crazy. âAre you kidding me?â Chelsea asked with a raised eyebrow. âHonestly, I kind of am,â you said and looked up at him. He beamed down at you and kissed your head. âSee, at least someone is,â he told them and teasingly stuck his tongue out at them. They all laughed and shook their heads.Â
âAre you not scared?â Dakota asked you. âOf course Iâm scared, but heâs been so excited about it that it kind of has me excited too,â you laughed softly. âYouâre crazy. His excitement is scaring me,â Tanner told you and you laughed again.Â
You all got into the RV and took your seats. The skies had begun to melt into pastel pinks and layers of scarlet. It was your favorite time of the day.Â
You looked out the window as the clouds melded blue with pink. âYou know, this time of day always reminds me of you,â Alex said softly. You peered up at him and smiled. âAnd why is that?â you asked and reached out to interlace your fingers with his. âI can always find you at a window reading, or just watching at this time of day. Itâs your favorite,â he explained and your smile brightened. âYeah, it is,â you said and reached over to kiss his cheek.Â
You sat there with your head against his shoulder as the last of the sunâs rays warmed you. He kept you close while he scrolled through his phone, following suit of everyone else for the time being. As the sky grew darker you knew it was time to pick up where you left off.
âYou just got to the top like it was nothing,â Dakota said to Tanner. âI wanted the mystery prize,â Tanner explained himself and you laughed. âWell you definitely got it,â you said and reached over to give him a high-five. âIâm pretty curious what this whole prize is, but Iâm even more curious as to where weâre going,â Chelsea spoke up and looked at Alex expectantly.Â
âI have another surprise,â Alex told you all and you sighed heavily. âAre you kidding me? Can you stop?â Tanner asked tiredly. âReally Al, there is no stopping you,â you said and shook your head.Â
âYouâre gonna ruin the word âsurpriseâ for me,â Chelsea told him and you nodded in agreement.Â
âThe spot that Iâm taking you guys right now, might bring back some bad memories,â Alex informed you all and you let your head lull back in exhaustion. âWhat?â everyone questioned. âWhat do you mean?â you asked him. âI canât tell you that yet, but we are getting close so I do want all 4 of you guys to go up there if you can and keep your eyes peeled,â Alex told you all.Â
âOk, I donât think 4 will fit up there so Iâll stay back here, just tell me what it is,â you said and let them go up front. âYouâll know it when you see it,â Alex told you all. âIâm incredibly curious,â Chelsea said and made her way to the front. âWhat the heck are you doing to us, Al?â Dakota questioned. âWe are in the middle of nowhere,â Chelsea stated. âThis is gonna be terrible isnât it?â you looked over at your boyfriend for confirmation but he just smiled at you. âI think I see it,â He said and you sighed. âWhat?â Dakota asked and looked ahead as best as he could.Â
âWait a minute,â Chelsea started. âOh,â Tanner said in shock as he turned back to look at Alex. âYup,â Alex confirmed. âWait is that?...â Dakota didnât finish as Tanner raised his voice.Â
âDude! Thatâs Ashmore!â he exclaimed and your eyes widened. âWhat the hell? No way!â you said in shock. âIt totally is!â Chelsea confirmed.
âItâs been like six, seven years since weâve been here,â Dakota explained. âA little trip down memory lane,â Alex said and you couldâve sworn your stomach actually sunk.Â
This place was definitely not the best memory for you. It was your first overnight and you came out of there more scared than you had been before even going in.Â
âThis is the first location me and (y/n) ever slept at,â Chelsea reminded. âI remember it so vividly, it still freaks me out to this day,â You explained and she nodded in acknowledgment.Â
âThis is where it all started,â Dakota pointed out. âNone of us ever wanted to come back here, ever,â Tanner spoke and you couldnât help but agree.Â
âAlright, here we go,â Alex said as you all got up to exit the RV. âThis is not going to be a good night,â you breathed out. Alex placed a hand on your back as you stepped out. âYouâll be fine babe, one step at a time,â he said and kissed the back of your head.Â
âYou guys ready for this?â He asked everyone and turned around to get their reactions. âOh, holy crap, dude,â Dakota said in awe as he stepped out. âOh my goodness,â Chelsea said as she looked on at the tall building ahead of her. âI had to see the look on your faces when we pulled up to this place,â Alex said and you chuckled. âOf course, you did,â you said and playfully smacked his shoulder. âI mean it is kind of cool to be back,â Tanner said. âItâs cool, but Iâm nervous,â Dakota stated. âI am too,â you said and you both looked at each other with uneasy glances.Â
âI did dig up some new, and kind of disturbing information about this place. What do you say, we read the packet?â He asked and your shoulders sagged. âThis is gonna be so not fun, I am not excited anymore,â you said and everyone chuckled. âI never was,â Chelsea said and you laughed.Â
You set up the camera and all sat down to read the packet. You shivered a bit from the wind that was blowing. Alex wrapped an around your waist and pulled you closer to him.Â
âThis is a place that has definitely left its mark on all of you,â Alex began. âItâs so crazy how much weâve grown since the last time we were here,â Chelsea said. âWe definitely left with a lot of questions,â You stated. âIâm just curious to see if your new information gives us any answers,â you spoke again.Â
âI also have another surprise,â Alex stated and you let your head drop to the table in annoyance. âNo, stop,â Dakota said. And everyone just begged the questions âwhy?â and âwhat?â
âWhen weâre done reading this packet we are going to be going right in,â He said and your eyes widened in shock. âAbsolutely not,â You said and waved your hands around in objection. âAbsolutely,â Alex came back. You screwed your eyes shut and took a deep breath.Â
âI shouldâve seen this coming,â Dakota said and you just sighed for the millionth time that day.Â
âDakota, do you want to open it?â Alex asked and held out the packet. âHere goes nothing,â Dakota said as he began to open it.
âAshmore Estates,â Chelsea and Dakota read at the same time.Â
And so it began.Â
