Oh, you beautiful Brazilian boy.
If we haven’t already mentioned it, one of us is an Everton fan. And the tournament has been lit up by the club’s former legends.
Strikes from Valencia and Klaasen were nice to see, but a double from Richarlison for Brazil was a little raw. What could have been, if only the Toffees weren’t shit...
Still, a spectacular moment from a man who kept his promise to keep them up and it helped deliver BIG CASH MONEY for two of us.
It was a day of wins all round for two out of three of us. The Swiss rolled over the Cameroonians (sorry) as their front line worked like clockwork (sorry) to cut through the African’s defence like a Swiss Army Knife through hot chocolate (sorry, mainly because I don’t think that one even works). That was good enough for Tom and Neil to win, but Swiss indiscipline meant Alex’s bookings inspired bet didn’t work out. Neil’s £3 is now the biggest of the tournament so far.
A slightly dreary 0-0 between Ukraine and South Korea meant we all drew a blank but Ronaldo’s antics meant better fortunes. The unemployed striker hit the target twice and led his team to victory to give Tom and Neil another win - but the corners dried up in the second half to block Alex’s return.
Finally onto Brazil, and an impotent Serbian strikeforce meant Alex finished the day without a penny, the first QUAD loss of the tournament. Neil just needed the South Americans to win, which they duly did, while Richarlison’s double and a few early fouls gave Tom a win.
Here’s where we stand after day five and the first 16 games.
Alex: £9.38 DOWN
Neil: £0.12 DOWN
Tom: £4.83 DOWN
I know I like my stats, but these games are coming too thick and fast to work them out properly, thanks to the unique schedule of this year’s tournament. After 17 games at the last world cup, Alex was doing a few pounds better, while Neil is only pennies worse off. It’s a much worse showing for Tom, who was several pounds up in 2018 at this point.
Last summer in the Euros, after 15 games Alex was our leader on just over £2 down. Tom was 2p worse off than now while Neil is performing much better. But honest to god, who knows. Incredibly, we’re just four days away from the halfway mark... Here’s what we’re after today.
Alex:
Wales v Iran, over 0.5 goals in game - 1/9
Qatar v Senegal, over 0.5 goals in game - 1/10
Netherland v Ecuador, over 1.5 goals in game - 4/11
England v USA, England to win - 8/15
Neil:
Wales v Iran, Bale to take 1+ shots on target and Wales to win - 11/8
Qatar v Senegal, Senegal to win or be two up at any point in the game - 8/13
Netherlands v Ecuador, under 2.5 goals in game - 8/11
England v USA, England to win - 4/9
Tom:
Wales v Iran, Wales to win, 4+ Wales corners and 30+ booking points - 3/1
Qatar v Senegal, Senegal to win or be two up at any point in the game - 8/13
Netherlands v Ecuador, 1+ shot on target each team in each half - 1/1
England v USA, England to win, over 1.5 goals in game - 3/4

Drag Race Holland 205 Dearly Beloved (Family Resemblance)
As tiny as The Netherlands are as a country: on April 1, 2001 the Dutchies took the world stage by being the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. At midnight four couples got married in Amsterdam. 20 years later one of these couples Dolf and Gert are still going strong and reliving the magical moment of getting married. This time the officials on duty are none other than our queens. And it’s a family affair all the way through the end this episode with the queens slaying the runway with their beloved ones.

Drama.
That’s not quite how it’s supposed to go for England. It’s supposed to be hard work, it’s supposed to be full of mistakes. It’s not supposed to be 6-2.
An interesting first full day of the World Cup. A pummelling from the Three Lions, after the saga of a woozy headed Iranian keeper. Senegal and the Netherlands played out a lively game until they forgot to be lively in the second half and just sort of let the game happen. And it finished with the proverbial game of two halves as USA and Wales played out an entertaining draw,
But what of gambling?
The England game didn’t quite go to plan for us. Harry Kane’s early withdrawal without a shot cost Tom and Alex an opening bet, although Alex also needed a Kieran Trippier strike as well. Raheem Sterling scored one, but Neil needed two shots, and cursed the Chelsea striker’s unselfish second half play.
The lightweight Senegalese attack, clearly missing Mané, couldn’t breach the Dutch defence, which played into Neil’s hands. His bet on the Dutch to win and not concede was looking good as Memphis Depay ran towards the Senegalese goal.
Tom needed a second goal of any kind to win, so it definitely wasn’t stressful (in the context of a pathetic return of pennies) as his streaming service cut out before the initial shot came in. Several minutes later, it was confirmed that yet another Everton legend in Davy Klaasen had made his mark on the World Cup and the cash was secured. Sadly, Alex didn’t get a third goal to join us on the honours list.
Onto USA v Wales and a timid Cymru team let the Americans take control in the first half but crucially, did not let Christian Pulisic shoot. Gareth Bale’s second half penalty gave Tom and Alex a chance, but it wasn’t to be, while Neil’s blind Forest loyalty never really gave him a chance.
Two out of nine then and the struggles are already in full flow ahead of QUAD DAY. Here’s how we stand.
Alex: £4 DOWN
Neil: 75p UP
Tom: £2.27 DOWN
It’s the nightmare start for Alex, although in fairness, it’s not that much better for Tom. Not wanting to tempt fate, but in Alex’s first attempt at Euro 2016, he went 24 games without winning a bet... On each of the other two tournaments, he won his first bet on day two. It’s Neil’s best start ever, the only time he’s been in profit after four matches, whereas it’s Tom’s worst kick off to a challenge yet.
With four bets a day, it feels as if the next couple of weeks is about survival. That’s why these are some of the weediest bets of all time. Here’s what we’re after.
Alex:
Argentina v Saudi Arabia, more than 1.5 goals in the game - 1/5
Denmark v Tunisia, more than 0.5 goals in the game - 1/12
Mexico v Poland, Mexico to win or draw - 2/5
France v Australia, more than 2.5 goals in the game - 4/6
Neil:
Argentina v Saudi Arabia, Argentina to win - 1/8
Denmark v Tunisia, Denmark to win - 4/7
Mexico v Poland, both teams to score - 10/11
France v Australia - France to win - 2/9
Tom:
Argentina v Saudi Arabia, Argentina to score 1+ goals and 4+ Argentina corners - 1/6
Denmark v Tunisia, Denmark to win or be two goals up at any point in the game - 11/20
Mexico v Poland, over 1.5 goals and 10+ booking points for each team - 4/5
France v Australia, France to win or be two goals up at any point in the game - 2/9
Pathetic stuff all round, but needs must... Now, how to cancel a day of work meetings to follow Argentina...
